(Unaverage Mystical Experiences)
『I finished this book a few months ago, and in retrospect I think it is a breath of fresh air in the Spiritual department. Why do extreme athletes risk their lives doing these things? Read to find out, and find out as well all of their very unconventional Mystical experiences they often have while doing these crazy activities. I'll probably read this book at least once more again sometime in my life, if not twice. Definetely recommended to the adventurous soul prone to extreme ways.』

(Great Stories, but...)
『First of all, the stories in this book are incredible...riveting...fascinating. Really. This could have even been a great book if the author left it at that--stories that show the spiritual side of adventure sports...

Instead, for each story the author tries to come up with a plausible explanation, and each time she turns to one of two places: Modern Science or Eastern Religion.

The scientific explanations for the paranormal can be quickly dismissed--of course the spiritual world can't always be explained with logical, scientific responses.

It's her attempt at spiritual explanations that are frustrating. She turns to Chinese mysticism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Transendentalism, the Occult, the New Age, even voodoo to find the answers. In fact, she tries to find her explanations in no less than TWENTY-SIX different spiritual and cultural movements, even Greek mythology.

HEAVEN FORBID that she should consider God, Jesus or even Christian mysticism for any answers! After about the 20th explanation, where she's grasping for answers within the Inuit spiritual tradition or morphic fields for her answer, it gets ridiculous. You won't even find "Christianity" in the index, as if it were irrelevant to any major spriritual discussion.

One chapter focuses on spiritual visitors that been documented to have helped explorers and adventurers throughout history and up through modern times. The author happens to mention that more than 1/3 of Americans report having seen angels at some point in their lives. Do you know how many millions that is? Yet could any of the "spiritual friends" she mentions have been angels? HEAVEN FORBID that she would even HINT in her writings that Christianity exists! It's ultimately sad to see how far out her way she goes to avoid it.

So in the end we have a tragic indication of where Western culture has come--to the point where our own religious traditions can't even be mentioned in a wide-reaching book on spirituality.

Read this book for the spiritual adventure stories if you must, but take the rest of it for what it is: A politically correct tome based on Eastern religion.』

(Fascinating portrait of extremes)
『I bought the Kindle version after hearing Coffey on Oprah's Soul Series. I read it more as a spiritual searcher than as an endurance athlete. The book was comprehensive in its exploration of what drives people to put themselves in the path of great suffering (made me think of the monks who built monasteries on chunks of rock off the coast of Ireland)... why? While the book is full of ghosts and other psychic phenomena, Coffey is even-handed in exploring these. She approaches mysteries with a true spirit of inquiry.

Also, I couldn't put it down. In this snowy season, it did change my attitude about facing the cold as a mini-adventure.』

(What is Man's Connection to the Great Outdoors?)
『I found this to be an interesting and thought provoking examination of why many extreme athletes do what they do and what their minds?/spirits? do when the are doing what they do. However, it has application to those of us who are not extreme but can, just the same, be overwhelmed by the grandeur of nature.
Through a lot of first person stories of odd "spiritual" experiences and a good mix of possible "scientific" explanations, including her own, the author probes what we perceive at times of heightened awareness. I found it a fascinating read. Sources are cited if you want to go look them up and a good index is provided, essential if you want to use this for some reference.
There is some repetition that could have been handled better by a brief explaining that a return to that person's story was coming up.
If you hike, ski, snowboard, climb, swim, surf, fly, jump, sail, bike, or rum it will have some great stories for you.

(good read)
『This is an insightful book for those non-adrenaline-seeking types, and an affirmation of what us junkies already know about pushing the limits. Easy to read in sections as it isn't one long story but interesting chapters that nicely segueway from one ot the next.』
Real-life psychic, near-death, and paranormal experiences are combined with cutting-edge science and vivid adventure stories in this energetic look at why extreme athletes and mountaineers take the risks that allow them to push the limits of consciousness, and what they encounter there.

In the life-or-death world of extreme adventure sports, there is one thing that athletes often keep quiet about: the“forbidden” territory of paranormal experiences. Ranging from fleeting moments of transcendence to full-blown encounters with ghosts and everything in between—visions, near-death experiences, psychic communication—many extreme athletes have experienced these moments of connection with the beyond, but have been reluctant to talk about them.

InExplorers of the Infinite, award-winning outdoors journalist and lifelong adventure sports devotee Maria Coffey probes the mystical and paranormal experiences of mountaineers, snowboarders, surfers, and more. She reviews cutting-edge science, and consults the history of philosophy and spirituality to answer the question: Could the state of intense“aliveness” that is the allure of extreme sports for so many actually be a route to a connection with the beyond?

Coffey investigates the scientific explanations for mystical phenomena, ranging from simple explanations to theories from consciousness studies and quantum physics, and leaves us wondering where science ends and spirituality begins.

An energetic, you-are-there look at the spiritual lives of extreme athletes,Explorers of the Infiniteasks why extreme athletes take the risks that allow them to push the limits of consciousness, what they encounter there, and what we can learn from them.』

(enjoyable read)
『Usefull tips without boring. Surfing is not something I really spend much time reading about. Much for fun to do. Worth reading.』

(Next level)
『This is a must have for any surfer who wants to improve their technique, and elevate their performance--as well as improve their understanding of the ocean from a surfer's perspective. My only criticism is that it includes beginner advice, which may have been smart in terms of marketing, but it gets in the way of it being a special addition to a solid surfer's library.』

(The ultimate surfing book)
『Excellent reading and photographs, all manoeuvers carefuly explained by the pros, and Jim Kempton has indeed put a lot of effort to bring out a bit of his knowledge to elicit this manual as top referencing for surfing studies. Besides, great customer service from Wavefinder's web site.』

(This Manual Breaks the Mold)
『You know what would be really awesome: if you could sit down in one room - picture a classroom on a dune in front of Pipeline or something - with all of the best surfers in the world and ask them, one-by-one, every question that you'd be embarrassed to ask if you met them face-to-face. Like, I don't know, "Hey Taj - how do you approach a wave at the right angle for a good air?" "And Parko, can you add some pointers on style once I'm up there?" "Or how `bout you Andy - dude, can you stop whispering to your neighbor while others are talking? - yea you: Can you explain why you drag your butt in the wave when you're backside tube riding?"

Unfortunately that would never happen. (Even if you accomplished the impossible task of getting them in the same room, Flea and Skindog would probably throw stink bombs and run out the back.) But if it did, it would be something like having Jim Kempton's new book, Surfing The Manual: Advanced. I used to think buying any kind of surfing how-to book, unless it included a map to new breaks, would be a waste time and money. But WaveFinder has broken the mold with this one. They've gotten just about every top pro to pitch-in information on what each one of them does best. From Ken Bradshaw explaining why most surfers botch their duck dives (they use their knees or shins instead of their back foot) to Dave Rastovich discussing the nuances of fins-free reentries (it's all timing apparently), this book is like a bible for everything about surfing that you thought was impossible to explain. I highly recommend it for every surfer.』

(Great book to improve your surfing-intermediates&up)
『I've been surfing consistently for over 20 years.I got this book because I felt my surfing, though good enough, has stagnated somewhat and I needed some inspiration. What a well put-together book! The title says advanced but I recommend it from intermediate surfers up. If you can stand and do a few turns this book will start you off with a solid base for bottom turns, off the tops etc. Even after so long surfing I found some flaws in my own techniques regarding these fundamental manoeuvers. If you are refining your tube riding or starting to pop airs etc there's some good tips and there are other sections on fitness, big waves, equipment, tow surfing and so on. It's stacked with beautiful pictures of waves being ripped by top surfers to illustrate technical points but this would lead to my only criticism. The pictures make it a nice coffee table book but slightly heavy (though still possible)to travel with. Would be nice if it included a paperback text only manual of techniques to take on the road. Other than that, excellent.』
『The definitive guide to surfing from the world's leading extreme sports publishers, Wavefinder. Never before has such an esteemed assembly of the world's greatest surfers come together to provide the deepest insights and secrets of surfing for surfers.』

There are almost 400 professional racetracks devoted to competitive drag racing in North America.

InDrag RacingTimothy Miller reviews the history of the sport and explains the differences between the specific car classes, such as top fuelers, funny cars, alcohol cars, pro modifieds and pro stock. Profiles of the sport's pioneers and today's best-known names are also included.

(Great read for fighters... or other angry souls!)
『Great book, very well written, tons of storys and anecdotes that will make you laugh and that will conjur some deep thoughts!

If you are into the world of MMA and/or combat sports it is a must read!』

(Very entertaining book)
『Reading this book was kind of like watching a good DVD, I don't know how to make that statement make more sense so I won't try. I enjoyed the book. Its worth a read.』

(Great book)
『Awesome book!!! If you like people getting punched in the face, and reading (yeah, it's possible!), you'll like this. Great book, cool pics and fun times.

(The Hunter S. Thomson of fight-writing on your coffee table, only your wife is safe.)
『As a longtime listener of the webcast "Knuckle Up", I'd heard the rantings about this book and, without a Paypal account, figured this is as good a way to support the art.

I was happy I did.

This book touches on many of the forms fighting takes, some of which I was interested in and others, I found compelling by virtue of Mr. Robinson's prose.

Unique and unflinchingly honest, his writing is coupled with the humility of one who's faced -and lost- to many of the luminaries, legends and reprobates of the fight world.

Think of the internal monologue of Tyler Durden from "Fight Club" if he fought Roy Jones Jr. instead of Jared Leto. Now make him NOT gay, and you pretty much got this book.

I'm confident that if Mr. Robinson wrote about dog shows, he'd find the madness within the reason that people engage in those things too -and I'd find it just as much fun to read- but given this book is about our most basic alpha-male communication tool, I feel there are few writers today that can lend his insight.』

(Fight, is a must-have!)
『This book is a must-have for anyone who is a fan of the pugilistic arts, whether it's on the streets, or in a ring or cage. Eugene Robinson manages to cover every aspect of fighting and educates the reader, while at the same time, makes you laugh at his own agonizing experiences. I'm an avid MMA fan and have trained for years, and I even learned some new things from this book. I recommend it, highly!』

Crushing your enemies, driving them before you, and hearing the lamentations of their women? It doesn't get any better than this."–Eugene Robinson, ripping off John Milius

That's the sentiment that surges just below the surface of Eugene Robinson's Fight– an engrossing, intimate look into the all–absorbing world of fighting. Robinson – a former body–builder, one–time bouncer, and lifelong fight connoisseur – takes readers on a no–holds–barred plunge into what fighting is all about, and what fighters live for. If George Plimpton hadmuscles and had been choked out one too many times––this is the book he could have written.

When Robinson and his fellow fighters mix it up, they live completely for the moment: absorbed in the feel of muscles slippery with sweat; the metallic tang of blood mingling with saliva in the mouth; the sweet, firm thud of taped knuckles impacting flesh. They fight because it feels good. They fight because they want to win. And even if they get their asses kicked, they fight because they love fighting.

Fight is part encyclopedia, part panegyric to fighting in all its forms and glory. Robinson's narrative– told in his trademark tough–guy, stream–of–consciousness noir voice – punctuates this explanatory compendium of the fighting world. From wrestling, jiu–jitsu, boxing and muay thai to bar fighting, hand–to–hand combat, prison fighting and hockey fights, from the greatest movie fightscenes to how to throw the perfect left hook, Fight is a scene–by–scene tour of the bloody but beautiful underworld that is the art of fighting.

With his aficionado's enthusiasm and fast–paced, addictive voice, Robinson's Fight combines compelling text with beautiful photographs to create an illustrated book as edgy and interesting as it is gorgeous.

(Inspiring read that, at times, can be annoying)
『Dean Karnazes is a remarkable individual with a strong passion and rare determination. I enjoyed his recount of his journey through running. The fact that he got to his current level of fitness after many years of not running is especially inspiring and gives hope to people of all levels of fitness. I was put off though by his attitude in certain passages of the book. Oftentimes he tended to openly state how crazy he is and how his coworkers and friends thought he was a lunatic, as if to say "everyone thought I was a hardcore". The guy is very impressive and probably a little on the crazy side, but instead of tooting his own horn, it would come across better if he let the reader draw his own conclusions. His actions speak for themselves. This comes across as arrogance and it was slightly annoying. However, overall I would recommend this book because his retelling of his struggles through the races is very inspiring and shows you that even a superman struggles with the same pains and negative thoughts that a mere mortal runner goes through.』

(My Dentist's Husband Is Hot)
『Julie Karnases, my dentist, once mentioned that her husband ran a lot. She's the understated type and quite beautiful. Good at her work, I might add. My reading generally doesn't run to the athletic feats genre, but out of loyalty to Julie, I bought "Ultramarathon Man" a couple of years after her initial comment. The book kept me fascinated. Ultimately any great human endeavor grips the reader and doesn't let go. If you read "Lust for Life" about Van Gogh or "Ultramarathon Man" by Dean Karnases, you witness passion in its purest form. Ann Seymour, author of "I've Always Loved You."』

(Love him or hate him)
『This book is an autobiography about Dean Karnazes, even though it may look like egocentric at first, his running adventures really keep you reading and wanting to know more, for those who rated the book with 1 or 2 stars because they are already ultra runners and wanted to find recipes and obscure techniques, too bad, this book, I think was for the general audience and wannabe ultra-marathoners (like myself, who has completed 2 marathons and I am for my third this year, I really found inspiration in this book to go for the 50 miles next year). The title was not even his idea, it was from Lessley Anderson from the San Francisco Weekly, he mentions this in the acknowledgments (evidently a sales and marketing strategy), I have not had the honor to meet the man, but in the interviews that I have seen from him, he's quite humble, not with a super ego. All things considered, Dean has been very clever on exploiting his fame and at the same time, he does not do it just for the ego (let's face it, we all have some amount of ego), he's also deeply engaged in charity (something, I have been inspired to do also),』

(This book is not about ultramarathoning.)
『I'm a runner, and although I have not done and probably never will do an ultramarathon, I know quite a few ultramarathoners and thought this book would give me a better idea of the sport. But, wow, this book is a piece of crap.

Rarely have I read something by an author so completely self-absorbed, self-worshiping, self-indulgent, and egotistical. He feigns modesty throughout the book, but its insincerity is crystal clear. Yes, Dean, I know that you're an amazing runner (although there are other ultrarunners who are even better, and they get no mention in this book) but I really don't care that you have 5% body fat, that you are "cut like a prize fighter," that "over the course of the decade [you] managed to amass nine more Western States Silver Buckles...dozens of medals, plaques, and trophies" but that although "it's cool to have mementos like these, [you ] didn't have them out on display in the living room."

Also, the writing is just plain bad. Dialogues with other people (all of whom, even his family, are portrayed as completely one-dimensional characters) are unrealistic.

And finally, he's sexist. No mention of the (many) incredible female ultrarunners, but he does send a tampon as a joke to a male friend who'd just finished his first Western States 100. Implying, I assume, that because the guy didn't run it particularly quickly, that he was no better than a woman. No matter that a woman, Pam Reed, beat Dean TWICE in the 130-mile Badwater race, and that she was the first person to run 300 miles continuously.

This book is not about the sport of ultra running. This book is about Dean Karnazes, and an ego the size of Canada.』

(Light reading but motivating)
『Read this book and it totally changed the way i work out - I began pushing myself in ways that i had never before. I am a self proclaimed wimp and, from this book, I got this feeling that my body and mind are tougher than I give 'em credit for and so i would push my workouts a little bit more. I am not a jock: I workout to stay fit - that is all. Well, this book helped me to get fitter.』
『There are those of us whose idea of the ultimate physical challenge is the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon. And then there is Dean Karnazes. Karnazes has run 226.2 miles nonstop; he has completed the 135-mile Badwater Ultramara-thon across Death Valley National Park-considered the world's toughest footrace-in 130-degree weather; and he is the only person to complete a marathon to the South Pole in running shoes (and probably the only person to eat an entire pizza and a whole cheesecake while running).

Karnazes is an ultramarathoner: a member of a small, elite, hard-core group of extreme athletes who race 50 miles, 100 miles, and longer. They can run forty-eight hours and more without sleep, barely pausing for food or water or even to use the bathroom. They can scale mountains, in brutally hot or cold weather, pushing their bodies, minds, and spirits well past what seems humanly possible.

Ultramarathon Manis Dean Karnazes's story: the mind-boggling adventures of his nonstop treks through the hell of Death Valley, the incomprehensible frigidity of the South Pole, and the breathtaking beauty of the mountains and canyons of the Sierra Nevada. Karnazes captures the euphoria and out-of-body highs of these adventures.

With an insight and candor rarely seen in sports memoirs, he also reveals how he merges the solitary, manic, self-absorbed life of hard-core ultrarunning with a full-time job, a wife, and two children, and how running has made him who he is today: a man with anüberjock's body, a teenager's energy, and a champion's wisdom.』

『Ultra-marathoner Dean Karnazes claims "There is magic in misery." While it would be easy to write off his habit of running for 100 miles at a time—or longer—as mere masochism, it's impossible to not admire his tenacity in pushing his body to reach one extreme goal after another. Sure, it's gory to read about how he lost one of his big toenails from shoe friction during the Western States Endurance Run. But what registers more is that here's a guy competing in an event that includes 38,000 feet of elevation change--the equivalent of scaling the Empire State Building 30 times.

Despite his considerable athleticism, "Karno" argues that the first half of any race is run with one's body, and the second half with the mind. Without delving into excessively touchy-feely territory, he explores "the possibilities of self" as he completes an ultra-marathon in 120-degree heat in Death Valley, and later the first-ever marathon at the South Pole. It's an odd combination: a California surfer dude contemplating how, as Socrates said, "Suffering leads to wisdom." But Karnazes's self-motivation is utterly intriguing, and it's impossible to read this memoir without wanting to go out and run a marathon yourself.--Erica Jorgensen

(Good book, but video would be better)
『I thought this book was pretty well done, but I find that I can't learn this type of skill very well from reading about it. Video seems to work better for me. Brian Lopes is certainly well qualified and has some great stories in the book.』

(Great book)
『I am just getting into mountain biking (bit of a roadie), and this book is great. It is definitely more advanced than my beginning talent, but it gives me a place to start and goals to work towards. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be a better mountain biker. If you enjoy gentle singletrack once a month don't bother. If you want to increase your speed and skills it is a must have.』

(Great skills book)
『This book is great, really helps fine tune your skills and sheds light on how to do a lot of things correctly to help ride faster/safer. Two thumbs up.』

(Easy to follow, in-depth description, of how to do anything on a mountain bike)
『I'm someone who learns pretty well from books, but I don't think you need to be to like this one. I've bought a lot of books with this thought in mind on mountaineering, skiing, telemarking, soccer...you name it. This is by far one of the best books I have ever read to learn techniques. And, I believe the reason it is so good is because it is written by two people who are probably a bit different in the way they learned the sport of mountain biking.
It's obvious that Brian Lopes is the "natural" athlete, and much of the information comes from breaking down what he does in different situations on a bike. Lee McCormack is no slouch and it is his left brain approach and his ability to break moves down into do-able steps that makes this book so accessible.
If your into mountain biking, expert or novice, this book will help you improve.

(Hip, KEWL, Rad, Bad, and Dangerous)
『This book is packed with beautiful color photos of airborne bicyclists. It inspires one to get out there, get pedaling, and get airborne. It has a lot of good tips on performance. In the first five chapters it talks about things that might be of interest to beginning and intermediate mountain bikers:choosing a bike, braking, to clip or not to clip, pedaling effectively, cornering, and so on. The bullet points and illustrations work very well. And it does an excellent job of it.

As the book extends into the late chapters, however, and the bikes become airborne, the book begins to convey a sense of "I'm the kewlest dude because I'm a world-class mountain biker who can hop 12 ft drops - hands tied behind my back, blindfolded, and sitting backward on the bike. And if you do everything I tell you, you can be just like me." Almost.

It's clear that the book is geared to a particular audience. So I wrote a quiz to help people decide if this is the right mountain bicycling book.

1) My age is:
- a)14-24,
- b)24-48,
-c) over 48.
2) My testosterone level is:
-a) stratospheric.
-b) moderate.
-c) nonexistent.
3) I think of a bicycle as:
-a) a good way to keep a rider airborne.
-b) a good way to travel mountain trails.
-c) a good way to get a mile or two away from the house.
4) My fitness level is:
-a) olympic athlete level.
-b) college scholarship level.
-c) lettered in a sport or less.
5) The prospect of riding twenty miles an hour on a slippery-wet, six-inch wide wooden rail suspended 20 feet above a rocky mountain floor:
-a) is appealing beyond my wildest dreams.
-b) seems like it might be scary and fun.
-c) seems suicidal.
6) One cannot live life fully without constantly putting oneself in danger of death or permanent four-limb paralysis:
-a) I strongly agree.
-b) I think its partly true, partly hyperbolic.
-c) what, are you insane?
7) Biking:
-a) is my whole life.
-b) is the focus of most of my free time.
-c) takes less than 30 hours per week of my time.
8) The amount I plan to spend on biking equipment and touring in the next five years is:
-a) $20,000 or more.
-b) $3000-$20,000.
-c) less than $3000.
9) I live:
- a) within five miles of hundreds of miles of mountain biking trails.
-b) within 50 miles of biking trails.
-c) cannot get to mountain biking trails from here.
10) I have:
-a) lots of "kewl" friends who live and die by their mountain biking prowess and I desperately want to be part of it .
-b) thousands of hours of mountain biking experience and you want to be much better in every way.
-c) the desire to get out on mountain trails a couple of times a week to enjoy the fresh air.

If you answered a) to all of these questions this is definitely a good book for you. If you answered b) to most of these questions, there is probably another mountain biking book that is better for your needs. If you answered c) to several of these questions, this is not the best mountain biking book for you. If you answered c) to all the questions, there is a more suitable activity for you: boating or bocce, perhaps.

My wife and I are young retirees who moved to Prescott AZ recently. We just discovered mountain biking, and we love it. We bought three books on mountain biking. This is the least favorite, because it is a little "over the top" for our needs.

The book is likely to bring young people to the sport, a laudable effect. But it may not be nearly as good at cultivating a frame of mind sufficiently guarded to avoid dangerous crashes. It might help young people to become members of the "kewl krowd;" but one might be tempted to conclude from the tone of this book - especially the second half - that to be genuinely KEWL requires a half-million dollar hospital stay that resulted from a failed Evil Knevil sized bike jump.

Those who wish to enjoy mountain trails but who have a healthy fear of broken bones and permanent paralysis, might find William Nealy's highly illustrated Mountain Bike! a better fit.』

(Terrible book)
『Would not recommend this text at all. I did not find an original idea, concept or exercise in the entire book. A mish mash of several other similar titles on the market, presented quite poorly in a cheap production.

(Okay.)
『My biggest gripe with this book is the author's WAY oversimplified discussion of aerobic vs. anaerobic training. His whole argument is aerobic training is a waste of time for the MMA athlete, which is inaccurate and potentially harmful. Like any athlete, the mixed martial artist needs a high level of aerobic fitness as a base for almost everything he or she does, and you're not going to get that just by doing intervals, etc.

Conditioning expert Lyle McDonald has written: "Rowers, whose even lasts roughly 6 minutes or so do the same, an enormous amount of aerobic work for the same reason. Sure there's an anaerobic component but it's typically done in fairly small amounts to 'sharpen' the athlete right before their event. The predominant training is aerobic.
Tangentially, you might keep that in mind the next time you read an article about how a mixed martial arts guy (who may be doing repeat rounds of 4-5 minutes with a short rest) should be doing nothing but interval work for conditioning. Because, simply put, the guy with the bigger aerobic engine will outperform the guy running on higher anaerobic capacities. The aerobic guy will not only recover better between rounds but, since he can generate more energy aerobically during the round, he won't gas as fast. Which isn't to say that fighters of any sort should be doing nothing but or enormous amounts of aerobic work mind you; both extremes are going to result in poor performance. But I'm getting off topic."』

(Solid book)
『This book was nice as he outlines quality workout methods. Sections dealing with body weight, sandbag, and other outside the gym techinques are particularly helpful, as these are harder to find and I discovered a few new things to try. The book is made of poor quality pulp, but that keeps the price low which is fine by me. I would also add that while the tactics would help those doing MMA, it isn't that specialized and is a nice reference for any althelete or weightlifter who wants to shake things up.』

(This a must have!)
『in no way am i writing this for Jason Ferruggia, this book speaks for itself.

If you train you would know that the tools needed to win are high, the price of glory is never free.
this book allows a person man or woman to train with the tools and common items found around the house to improve ones strength and quickness. He gives a list of email addresses to buy simple things to use as well.

I am not a gym rat by any means, but this book teachs you to fill a sand bag or pull a weight sled and train at home vs spending $$$ money $$$ at a high priced gym only to wonder around not knowig what to do next, and at a fraction of the price.

his book fills you in on supplements that dont work, to exercises that will work the smallest muscles in the body keeping you healthy and able to prepare for a fight.

If you're serious about fighting, get this book and train, when ready, join a good MMA school in your area and you will be miles ahead of your class and will impress them all with your quickness, and strength.

This book is 5 stars all the way!!!』

(Specific and practical advice for fighters)
『Bought it to prepare for the US Sr. Nationals in taekwondo, although it applies to athletes in many disciplines. An eye opener. I was still running miles, using the stairmaster, etc. Have done this since wresting in high school in the mid 80's.

Jason clearly explains a much more effective and rational training protocol, and also covers topics like making weight, diet, and stretching. A great value, clearly written, with lots of practical and specific, detailed advice.』

The ultimate strength and conditioning book for ultimate fighters.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is America's fastest-growing combat sport, with millions signing up for MMA classes and many more tuning in to "pay-per-view" to watch events with names like "Cage Rage" and "No Limit." MMA is not for wimps, and participants take a real pounding-they must be ready for anything. However, there is one way to predict a winner in any bout: conditioning. When facing an opponent with equal technical skill, the better-conditioned athlete will win- every match, every round, every time.

Now, with amateur fight leagues springing up across the country, top conditioning coach Jason Ferruggia reveals the ultimate conditioning program for the ultimate fighter. By gaining overall strength, stamina, speed, and flexibility, athletes can substantially reduce their risk of injury in this intense contact sport.

The key to Ferruggia's system is his emphasis on matspecific conditioning techniques. Too many would-be fighters use training programs borrowed from football or bodybuilding-methods that are all wrong for MMA. Included are:

- A first-rate warm-up guaranteed to make a fighter more explosive and to reduce injuries
- Off-the-charts strength-building secrets
- Dozens of exercises to develop crushing grip strength - Top speed-building methods, including Olympic lifts, plyometrics, and throws
- Incredibly effective exercises for building a thick, powerful neck that could be the difference between victory and serious injury

Each exercise is accompanied by black-and-white photos illustrating proper technique and form, and "Inside the Cage" tips share the secrets to success from top professional fighters.』

(good book. came in mint condition)
『Its a great picture book. theres no story or UFC or fighter info. just pictures. they are all high quality glossy photos from different events with alot of before and after shots. it arrived in mint condition and makes a great collectors piece.』

(Great Product, Poor Service)
『This UFC book was even better than I expected. Their pictures are incredibly detailed, and the before and after section of the fighters' mugs before their fights and after was sweet. The only problem I had was not getting the book when I was told I would receive it. I do credit the seller, or amazon, with refunding my extra delivery fee.』

(Great book for a great price)
『First off this isn't a mma training book, its a Photography book. I'm really surprised that this book is this cheap, because it is really great, tons of pictures, and over 300 pages!

Most pictures are portraits of the fighters before and after their fights, but Kevin Lynch (the photographer) puts in his own creative style on some pictures while the fighters are fighting.』

(Octagon (Ultimate Review))
『This is a great book. It has some amazing pictures from the UFC. Kevin Lynch is an extremely talented photographer and has captured some great moments from the UFC. He also captures the spirit of the UFC. Having been in the Octagon myself and seeing it in the book it is something I will cherish. If you're a fan of the UFC, you will love this book. Buy your own as you won't be borrowing mine.』

(Excellent Book)
『For the incredibly low price I paid for this item, I got a fantastic deal! The book has full color pictures, is much larger than I thought it would be and the hardback edition makes it a wonderful coffee table book - if UFC is your thing... Considering that the "original" full size book is $2500, you couldn't do any better with this one for only $30, which included shipping. It's a must have for any UFC fan.』

(Complete Idiot's Guide to Geocaching Second Edition)
『This book gives a simplistic, direct and user-friendly guide to people who are interested in the relatively new sport of geocaching. It is written in such a way that one is keen to go out and try it, given the understanding of how it came about, the knowledge of who is involved, and the feeling of outdoor freedom that supports the environment in its pursuit. Also, knowing that there is a world-wide interest and support group to join in with, or that you can be as individual as you like with this sport, is refreshing, and this is reflected throughout the book.』

(geocaching)
『This book has lots of information in it. Haven't had a chance to try out geocaching yet, but after reading the book, I am looking forward to it.』

(The best ..)
『This is the best book I've found / read on Geocaching. All you need to know and more. You can't go wrong picking up a copy of this book.』

(Best out there!)
『I have the last version of this book and it was good but this one is much more complete and tells you everything you need to know about geocaching.』

(Great book about geocaching)
『Tells everything you need to know about geocaching. The "Complete Idiot's Guide" series is usually very well written, and this title is no exception. Written by the editors and staff of [...], the people who started the whole geocaching craze in the first place--who better to write a book about the subject? Well, ok, if they couldn't write, then they might not do a great job, but I think that the book is very well written and organized. It probably contains more information then you want; I skipped over some of the map stuff, but I know where to look if I ever need to find an exact GPS coordinate on a paper map. The chapter "Choosing a GPS for Geocaching" actually did help me decide which GPS to buy, the chapter "Geocaching Tips and Tricks" gives good advice from people who know what they are talking about, and the "Resource Directory" points you to lots of websites that cover every aspect of the game. Very comprehensive, you won't be dissapointed.』
The ultimate global game revealed!

The Complete Idiot's Guide(r) to Geocaching, Second Editionis a comprehensive, yet entertaining and easy-to-understand book for getting started and having fun with geocaching-the high-tech version of hide-and-seek for global positioning system (GPS) users. In this edition, two new tools of the game-Waymarking and Wherigo-are included.

• The Geocaching website, which began operating in 2000 and is owned by Groundspeak, Inc., is the first and currently the largest website devoted to Geocaching
• Today, well over 800,000 geocaches are registered on various websites devoted to the pastime
• Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica

Ever since I can remember, I always loved fights. Whether it was sitting in front of the television watching boxing on Saturday afternoons when I was growing up or getting together with a bunch of friends to go to the arena to see a championship fight, there was nothing better than watching two fighters go toe-to-toe while matching wits and trying to prove who had the bigger heart.

To me, it was better than baseball, basketball or football, sports where you had teammates to help you out or take the blame when you lost. Fighting was a one-on-one sport, mano e mano, with no excuses. If you won, you took all the glory; you lost, you had no one to blame but yourself.

It was sport at its purest, but as the years went on, I saw boxing get engulfed and diluted by politics, in-fighting, and greed. I started to get disillusioned by the sport I loved, and it wasn’t until I met some athletes competing in a sport called mixed martial arts that the love of combat sports came back for me like it did when I was growing up.

In this sport, which combined the disciplines of boxing, wrestling, Muay Thai, kickboxing, and Jiu-Jitsu, I not only saw the future, but I saw the understated artistry that only true fight fans can appreciate. It’s something a lot of people can’t see, and I could never really put my finger on what it is, but when I saw Kevin Lynch’s photographs, I finally found something I could point to and say “that’s it. That’s what this sport is about.”

So when we at the Ultimate Fighting Championship decided to move forward with the book project that became Octagon, there was no question who would be the photographer. And while Kevin’s talent is obvious, his understanding of this sport and its athletes was another key factor in our decision, because let’s face it – not everyone is willing to look past the misconceptions about mixed martial arts and give it the fair treatment it deserves.

It’s been a long process to get to this point – for the UFC and for this book – but it was of the utmost importance to get it right, whether that meant unprecedented access to our events for Kevin, or having him capture our athletes at their most vulnerable, which was immediately before andafter their fights. In combat sports, or any sport for that matter, vulnerability can be seen as weakness; but one look at the pictures in this book will show that behind the bruises and cuts and the defeated or triumphant eyes, there is strength. It’s what these athletes are all about, and let me tell you, it takes a special person to step into that Octagon and fight another man – it’s why I call our guys real fighters, and why many of them are like family to me.

Octagon captures everything that’s great about this sport, and it makes me a fan all over again. It also reminds me that even with all the traveling, business meetings, interviews, late hours, and time away from my family, I’m here because I love fights and the UFC, and I always will.
