(Genuinely Insightful Peek Into the Workings of the Mind)
『I wholeheartedly commend this work to everyone. One of my first observations to my fiancee after reading of the experience Jill went through was to be that I wanted to be sure she had read this book if anything like this ever happened to me. I would desperately want those on the outside to have the perception provided here regarding what might be happening inside my mind. I also find myself much more aware of my Left Brain internal dialog, which seems to cause me so much misery. No matter who you are or what you have been through, or not been through, read this book! The insights are priceless.』

(Life Changing)
『I found out about this book from a radio interview with Dr. Taylor. I found what she was discussing fascinating and eventually got around to reading it. I wish I hadn't waited even a day. Although I am blessed to currently be healthy, and I have no close family or friends who have ever had strokes, I still found this book, literally, life changing. It has completely changed my perspective and outlook on the world. Dr. Taylor is a secular saint as far as I am concerned and we are blessed to hear her message.』

(Close but no cigar)
『This book offered great insight into traumatic brain injury through the eyes of one of its "victims". This book was written for the general public but as a student of the hard sciences i found it to be on the "touchy feely", metaphysical side (You are one with the universe.. i get it, next). With that being said, there are still lessons to be learned from the life of Taylor. If you are looking for book about nuerological science and brain injuries this may not be the book for you. But I can see it as a great self help/inspirational book for those who are affected by stroke/brain injuries in any way.』

(Review)
『I haven't finished reading the book yet but expect it to be exciting and fun to read based on what I've read so far and the description of the book. The book I received is used (as I requested) but is in excellent condition. It seems to me that it took awhile for the book to arrive but I haven't checked dates, etc. This is my first Amazon review . . .』

(Many strokes - many insights)
『This was a fascinating selection for our book group November 2009. There are some things the book does not do. It does not discuss all kinds of strokes but is limited to the kind Jill had. It also does not discuss any differences there might be between male and female brainedness which is something discussed in books like "Brain Sex: The Real Difference Between Men and Women" by Anne Moir and David Jessel but that might be significant in both the occurrence of a stroke and the impact/ recovery afterwards. This may be especially of importance if male brained individuals are less likely to recover. Apart from issues of this sort, the book does describe some things that seem incredibly useful not only to care providers but to those of us who might use these insights in controlling their own brains. Jill discovers ways to control her attitudes towards things by interpreting some attitudes as right brained and others as left brained. This enables her to choose and she unabashedly chooses the right brained attitudes having discovered she is not fated to have a certain type of character but instead can choose what kind of person she will be. Some of this may related to a book from the 70s called "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind by Julian Jaynes" at least with regard to the relationship between right and left brain ways of thinking. Apart from a stimulating read Jill's book leads to stimulating discussions that might not necessarily be on the book but about personal experiences that seem pertinent in light of the book.』
The astonishingNew York Timesbestseller that chronicles how a brain scientist's own stroke led to enlightenment

On December 10, 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, a thirty-seven- year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist experienced a massive stroke in the left hemisphere of her brain. As she observed her mind deteriorate to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life-all within four hours-Taylor alternated between the euphoria of the intuitive and kinesthetic right brain, in which she felt a sense of complete well-being and peace, and the logical, sequential left brain, which recognized she was having a stroke and enabled her to seek help before she was completely lost. It would take her eight years to fully recover.

For Taylor, her stroke was a blessing and a revelation. It taught her that by "stepping to the right" of our left brains, we can uncover feelings of well-being that are often sidelined by "brain chatter." Reaching wide audiences through her talk at the Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference and her appearance on Oprah's onlineSoul Series, Taylor provides a valuable recovery guide for those touched by brain injury and an inspiring testimony that inner peace is accessible to anyone.』

A brain scientist's journey from a debilitating stroke to full recovery becomes an inspiring exploration of human consciousness and its possibilities

On the morning of December 10, 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, a thirty-seven-year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist, experienced a massive stroke when a blood vessel exploded in the left side of her brain. A neuroanatomist by profession, she observed her own mind completely deteriorate to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life, all within the space of four brief hours. As the damaged left side of her brain--the rational, grounded, detail- and time-oriented side--swung in and out of function, Taylor alternated between two distinct and opposite realties: the euphoric nirvana of the intuitive and kinesthetic right brain, in which she felt a sense of complete well-being and peace; and the logical, sequential left brain, which recognized Jill was having a stroke, and enabled her to seek help before she was lost completely.

InMy Stroke of Insight, Taylor shares her unique perspective on the brain and its capacity for recovery, and the sense of omniscient understanding she gained from this unusual and inspiring voyage out of the abyss of a wounded brain. It would take eight years for Taylor to heal completely. Because of her knowledge of how the brain works, her respect for the cells composing her human form, and most of all an amazing mother, Taylor completely repaired her mind and recalibrated her understanding of the world according to the insights gained from her right brain that morning of December 10th.

Today Taylor is convinced that the stroke was the best thing that could have happened to her. It has taught her that the feeling of nirvana is never more than a mere thought away. Bystepping to the right of our left brains, we can all uncover the feelings of well-being and peace that are so often sidelined by our own brain chatter. A fascinating journey into the mechanics of the human mind,My Stroke of Insightis both a valuable recovery guide for anyone touched by a brain injury, and an emotionally stirring testimony that deep internal peace truly is accessible to anyone, at any time.

Questions for Jill Bolte Taylor

Amazon.com:Your first reaction when you realized what was happening to your body was one you would expect: "Oh my gosh, I'm having a stroke!" Your second, though, was a little more surprising: "Wow, this is so cool!" What could be cool about a stroke?

Taylor:I grew up to study the brain because I have a brother who is only 18 months older than I am. He was very different in the way he perceived experiences and then chose to behave. As a result, I became fascinated with the human brain and how it creates our perception of reality. He was eventually diagnosed with the brain disorder schizophrenia, and I dedicated my career to the postmortem investigation of the human brain in an attempt to understand, at a biological level, what are the differences between my brain and my brother’s brain. On the morning of the stroke, I realized that my brain was no longer functioning like a "normal" brain and this insight into my brother's reality excited me. I was fascinated to intimately understand what it might be like on the inside for someone who would not be diagnosed as normal. Through the eyes of a curious scientist, this was an absolutely rare and fascinating experience for me to witness the breakdown of my own mind.

Amazon.com:What did you learn about the brain from your stroke and your recovery that your scientific training hadn't prepared you for?

Taylor:My scientific training did not teach me anything about the human spirit and the value of compassion. I had been trained as a scientist, not as a clinician. I can only hope that we are teaching our future physicians about compassion in medicine, and I know that some medical schools, including the Indiana University School of Medicine, have created a curriculum with this intention.

My training as a scientist, however, did provide me with a roadmap to how the body and brain work. And although I lost my left cognitive mind that thinks in language, I retained my right hemisphere that thinks in pictures. As a result, although I could not communicate with the external world, I had an intuitive understanding about what I needed to do in order to create an environment in which the cells in my brain could be happy and healthy enough that they could regain their function. In addition, because of my training, I had an innate trust in the ability of my brain to be able to recover itself and my mother and I respected the organ by listening to it. For example, when I was tired, I allowed my brain to sleep, and when I was fresh and capable of focusing my attention, we gave me age-appropriate toys and tools with which to work.

Amazon.com:Your stroke affected functions in your left brain, leaving you to what you call the "la-la land" of your right hemisphere. What was it like to live in your right brain, and then to rebuild your left?

Taylor:When the cells in my left brain became nonfunctional because they were swimming in a pool of blood, they lost their ability to inhibit the cells in my right hemisphere. In my right brain, I shifted into the consciousness of the present moment. I was in the right here, right now awareness, with no memories of my past and no perception of the future. The beauty of La-la land (my right hemisphere experience of the present moment) was that everything was an explosion of magnificent stimulation and I dwelled in a space of euphoria. This is great way to exist if you don't have to communicate with the external world or care whether or not you have the capacity to learn. I found that in order for me to be able to learn anything, however, I had to take information from the last moment and apply it to the present moment. When my left hemisphere was completely nonfunctional early on, it was impossible for me to learn, which was okay with me, but I am sure it was frustrating for those around me. A simple example of this was trying to put on my shoes and socks. I eventually became physically capable of putting my shoes and socks on, but I had no ability to understand why I would have to put my socks on before my shoes. To me they were simply independent actions that were not related and I did not have the cognitive ability to figure out the appropriate sequencing of the events. Over time, I regained the ability to weave moments back together to create an expanse of time, and with this ability came the ability to learn methodically again. Life in La-la land will always be just a thought away, but I am truly grateful for the ability to think with linearity once again.

Amazon.com:What can we learn about our brains and ourselves from your experience, even if we haven't lived through the kind of brain trauma you have?

Taylor:I learned that I have much more say about what goes on between my ears than I was ever taught and I believe that this is true for all of us. I used to understand that I had the ability to stop thinking about one thing by consciously choosing to preoccupy my mind with thinking about something else. But I had no idea that it only took 90 seconds for me to have an emotional circuit triggered, flush a physiological response through my body and then flush completely out of me. We can all learn that we can take full responsibility for what thoughts we are thinking and what emotional circuitry we are feeling. Knowing this and acting on this can lead us into feeling a wonderful sense of well-being and peacefulness.

Amazon.com:You are the "Singin' Scientist" for Harvard's Brain Bank (just as you were before your stroke). Could you tell us about the Brain Bank (in song or not)?

Taylor:There is a long-term shortage of brain tissue donated for research into the severe mental illnesses. Most people don’t realize that when you sign the back of your license as an organ donor, the brain is not included. If you would like to donate your brain for research, you must contact a brain bank directly. There is also a shortage of "normal control" tissue for research. The bottom line reality is that if there were more tissue available for research, then more scientists would be dedicating their careers to the study of the severe mental illnesses and we would have more answers about what is going on with these disorders. The numbers of mentally ill individuals in our society are staggering. The most serious and disabling conditions affect about 6 percent--or one in 17--adults and 9-13 percent of children in the United States. Half of all lifetime conditions of mental illness start by age 14 years, and three-fourths by age 24 years.

(Truly excellent)
『This book helped me through my entire pregnanacy...A must have!!! Seriously, you will read it every week, and even in the weeks after giving birth. It provides clear, accurate and reliable information without scaring you into thinking of all the things that can go wrong.』

(My favorite pregnancy resource)
『I read 4 pregnancy books - yes I might be a little compulsive - and this one is my favorite. I like that it comes from a trusted resource, and I like that it goes through month by month how my baby is developing, what is happening with my body, and what to expect from my visits with my health care provider. I found it easy to read, unbiased, and up to date. The book is just over 600 pages long, but the month by month descriptions are only 265 pages of that. The remainder is divided into three sections - "decision guides for pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood," "pregnancy reference guide," and "complications of pregnancy and childbirth." The decision guides cover topics such as circumcision, breast vs. bottle feeding, prenatal testing, and returning to work. The section on complications of pregnancy and childbirth covers why certain symptoms occur, prevention and self-care, and when to call your doctor. I like that I can look at only the issue I am dealing with rather than having them mixed in with my month to month summaries. As a nurse and a soon-to-be first time mom, I highly recommend this book.』

(Recommended resource for new parents)
『As first-time parents, we wanted a handy reference for what to expect in pregnancy. My mother-in-law, a retired nurse, checked out several books at the library and recommended this one. It is well organized and has been useful so far.』

(the best $20 I have ever spent)
『I bought this book after reading positive reviews on Amazon when I just got pregnant and I have been reading parts of it at least once a week since then (I'm 7 months pregnant now). My first favorite part describes the child's development week after week in detail. It's so interesting to learn what is happening with your Little One at all these stages. My second favorite part is "Common concerns and questions of pregancy". It literally answered all my questions and concerns I have had since the beginning of the pregancy. It's a great relief to learn that the symptoms you have are a normal part of pregnancy, that every woman has them, and that there is nothing to worry about. It's very reassuring and gives you a piece of mind! Another part describes the delivery in detail, pain relief options and how to take care of an infant. I think all these parts are extremely useful for first-time mothers like me.
In sum, the book is written in a very objective way always giving you options and giving you an opportunity to take a well-informed decision. I think it's one of the best $20 I have ever spent.』

(Excellent layout easy to read and a lot of good information)
『This book has a great layout. Each month comes as its own section and each section is divided into five parts, your baby's growth, your body, your emotions, appointments with your health care provider and when to call a health care professional. It also has different reference guides and information on what to do in different health situations. It is also easy to read which makes it so nice. Great book.』
『This new Mayo Clinic book on pregnancy provides you with practical information and reassurance on pregnancy and childbirth. Compiled by Mayo Clinic experts in obstetrics, it offers a clear, thorough and reliable reference for this exciting and sometimes unpredictable journey. This comprehensive book includes:

(Be Wary if You Have a History of EDs)
『While it's clear that many people have had great success following this plan, and I applaud the idea of filling your diet with macronutrients, I would caution anyone with a history of eating disorders to be very careful with this plan. There are many rules and many forbidden foods, which can be triggering. If you do decide to try this plan, I would highly recommend doing so with the help of a counselor or nutritionist, or your doctor. Sometimes we can fall back into old, bad habits by convincing ourselves it is for our health.』

『A very good book for weight loss. Very down to earth and common sence. Best if all, it works and works very well. Well worth the money.』

(I lost 14 pounds because of this book)
『Great food book. I haven't read one that helped me this much in many years. The author really helps you to rethink your eating. I lost fourteen pounds and am still in this mindset. Hopefully, it will last. I only need another five to go!! Good read; I highly recommend it.』

(Eat To Live)
『This book is a real godsend. My wife immediately read it and outlined the 6 week detox diet. We began the regimen and in two weeks she has lost 18 pounds, I have lost a couple of inches off my waist and a friend had her sugar levels drop from 145 to 81! Her doctor was flabergasted! They were preparing to put her on insulin and in two weeks they found they did not need to do so. Dr. Fuhrman (who personally consults with thousands of patients) has isolated the problems with the processed foods of the American diet and relates the importance of eliminating the source of our poor health and revitalizing our bodies with real and raw foods that supply the enzymes and micronutrients that are essential for long-term health and wellness. In addition to the detox diet which has cured diabetes (type-2) for many people, he explains how to follow a life-long wholesome diet that will bring lasting health. He also includes many personal recipes that can be incorporated into this new lifestyle. This is the new "Health Care Plan for America" that can set you free from chronic disease!』

(THe best way to eat if you want to live)
『Great book-I have been following Dr. F's program for a year now and lost 80 pounds. I bought this again because I keep giving it out and never getting it back. Great program if you are serious about wanting to live healthily and be rid of pounds that chain you down. Great service: fast and inexpensive. I could have a closet of this book and never have enough to lend out! If you have almost lost hope- read Eat to Live- it will change your life and set you free from the bondage of unwanted weight and unhealthy living.』
『When Mehmet Oz or any of New York's leading doctors has a patient whose life depends on losing weight, they call on Joel Fuhrman, M.D. In EAT TO LIVE, Dr. Fuhrman offers his healthy, effective, and scientifically proven plan for shedding radical amounts of weight quickly, and keeping it off. Losing weight under Dr. Fuhrman's plan is not about willpower, it is about knowledge. The key to this revolutionary diet is the idea of nutrient density, as expressed by the simple formula Health=Nutrients/Calories. When the ratio of nutrients to calories is high, fat melts away and health is restored. Losing 20 pounds in two to three weeks is just the beginning. The more high-nutrient food Dr. Fuhrman's patients consume, the more they are satisfied with fewer calories, and the less they crave fat and high-calorie foods. Designed for people who must lose 50 pounds or more in a hurry, EAT TO LIVE works for every dieter, even those who want to lose as little as 10 pounds quickly. No willpower required-just knowledge!』

(A must read book for everyone)
『this book is not about going vegan or vegetarian, it's about providing facts, and that scares a lot of people.
the fact that what you eat and how that food got to your plate greatly impacts you is very important.
Just on the news this week they were talking about how 50% of the US population will be obese or overweight soon and how obesity overtaking smoking as the number 1 killer in America.

you don't need to stop eating meat to benefit from this book, but greatly cutting down on the amount and being very careful of where it comes from will be very beneficial.

what's great about this book is that it provides scientific data from decades of research and the study is still ongoing.

I'd also highly recommend the movie Food Inc which Martha Stewart just showcased on her show this week.』

(Reading just the first fourth of the book turned me into a vegetarian.)
『All my life I scoffed at vegetarianism, even though both my brilliant adult children have been on it for decades. Stupid of me. But THE CHINA STUDY opened my eyes. Late in life all right, I'm 85, but for about 20 years since my triple bypass I've steered clear of red meat. Ate lots of fish, fruits, veggies and nuts. My numbers were pretty good and at least I haven't had any more heart procedures, but I still noticed a sharp rise in energy within 72 hours of going vegan. As a result, I've gone off of several of my medications and continue to feel fine without pumping so many toxic pills into my body.

Unless you're part of the food or medical community, THE CHINA STUDY will blow your mind. You owe it to yourself to read it--right away.

----Warren Jamison』

(5 Stars for The China Study)
『This book has immediate eye-opening impact. I read 3 chapters the first night and the next morning I was so convinced by the research and evidence presented by Dr. Campbell that I became an instant "vegan". Granted I was already a vegetarian but I loved eating my homemade yogurt, milk kefir, and some cheeses. You may say you have heard it all before (e.g., a diet high in fruits, vegetables and grains is the healthiest way of eating) but Dr. Campbell displays his life time of scientific research and personal experience in such a factual manner that you cannot deny the truth of it and you cannot deny the detrimental effects that eating animal products (including eggs and especially dairy) has on your body. Dr. Collin's son, Thomas M. Campbell, helps display this information in a wonderfully readable and convincing manner. I was eager to read it from cover to cover (and I highly recommend you do the same to get the full impact). I originally checked the book out of the library and half way through it I knew I wanted to own it so I purchased 3 copies from Amazon so I could have loaners for friends and family.』

(Through no fault of the sender, the item never arrived)
『After waiting for a couple of weeks for my item to arrive, I checked the package tracking. The seller had taken the item to USPS immediately following my purchase of the item, and USPS stated that it was delivered to my address two days later. After checking with my apt leasing office, the local PO, and everyone in between, I was basically informed by USPS that I have no recourse to recover my money, as according to them, the package was delivered. The seller was as helpful as could be under the circumstances, and assisted me with obtaining tracking info, as well as making suggestions for contacting local POs, etc. However, I will NEVER purchase a product that is being shipped USPS again and recommend that others don't either. The USPS was unhelpful, slow, and pretty rude. I have never had these issues with UPS or FedEx, and I order online fairly regularly (although this experience makes me hesitate to continue doing so.)』

(China Study Review)
『Great book with solid research. It is opened my eyes to a plant based diet.』
Referred to as the "Grand Prix of epidemiology" byThe New York Times, this study examines more than 350 variables of health and nutrition with surveys from 6,500 adults in more than 2,500 counties across China and Taiwan, and conclusively demonstrates the link between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. While revealing that proper nutrition can have a dramatic effect on reducing and reversing these ailments as well as curbing obesity, this text calls into question the practices of many of the current dietary programs, such as the Atkins diet, that are widely popular in the West. The politics of nutrition and the impact of special interest groups in the creation and dissemination of public information are also discussed.

(Expecting Baby)
『My youngest daughter is expecting her first baby in May 2010. She had a lot of questions and some worries too. This book has eased her mind and has helped her to understand all the changes happening to her during the time when she needs the information the most. Excellent resource for anyone having a baby - either their first or their fourth. I would recommend it to everyone having a baby.』

『Please do not use this as your guide for pregnancy. It's downright terrifying! The author seems to love the medical community above all else, and the book contains little information for those seeking a healthy, HAPPY pregnancy outside of hospitals and doctor's offices.

Check out "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth" instead--5 out of 5! :)』

『I haven't received my book, I have purchased it and sent all my credit card infos... I even sent an email to the seller telling him, that I haven't received the book, buy he ne never answered me.』

(Very helpful and useful information)
『I thought for the most part that this book was very helpful. I especially found the caffeine chart with milligrams for each particular item very useful. I also enjoy how it details each month of pregnancy individually. I am only 5-6 weeks along, so I have not read very far into yet, but I am enjoying what I have read so far.

(Nice layout, helpful.)
『I liked this book -- I was always excited to read ahead on what to expect in following months, and to re-read my current month. I did not find this alarming or pushy. Broad information that's easy to locate via index. Is a useful book for those enjoying healthy uneventful pregnancies in addition to the mother to be who has a high-risk pregnancy.

(APA Manual being recalled)
『The FIRST PRINTING of the APA Publication Manual had so many errors that the APA office is offering to replace it with a SECOND printing between now and 15 Dec 09. I successfully replaced my copy purchased via AMAZON.com and hope the buyers at AMAZON will replace their FIRST printings with the corrected 2nd printing copies.』

(APA Publication Manual)
『Unfortunately, this product is full of errors--ironic for a style guide. As bad, the book arrived in a beat up envelope that was mostly open. The corners of the book were bent. I suggest waiting for the next printing of the APA Manual and insist that Amazon do a better job of packing products--the open envelope and damaged book was a first for me from Amazon.』

(Publication Manual of the APA)
『Unfortunately this publication has several errors in it's first publication. However, it is possible to return the book and have it replaced with the corrected version.』

(Revised edition available)
『I have not yet bought this edition, though I need to very soon. I know that there were numerous errors with the first printing of the sixth edition. I agree that it is inexcusable to have so many errors in a publication manual. However, I believe that the second printing is already available for purchase, with all of the corrections. I also got the following information from the APA website for those who already own the first printing:

"Many people have found that the corrections supplement meets their needs; if you find, however, that it doesn't meet yours, we will provide you an exchange replacement copy of the second printing of the Publication Manual at no cost to you. (The second printing corrects all identified errors.) We are making this replacement process available to individuals and institutions who have purchased the manual.

In order to receive an exchange replacement manual, you must return your current copy of the sixth edition to APA no later than December 15, 2009.

We would like to make this transaction as cost neutral to you as possible. A process has been created to provide you with a UPS postage paid return label that you can use to return the book to us. Please call the APA Service Center at 800-374-2721 for more information about the paid return postage process."』

(You Mean They're Not All Socialistic?)
『T.R. Reid actually went there! In his very engaging writing style, he takes us with him to interview doctors, patients, healthcare economists and so on. He had his own bad shoulder examined along with examining the healthcare systems of a number of countries.

While the U.S. ranks at the top in critical care, it ranks far from the top in infant death rates, healthy days over age 65 and longevity. Plus, the ones that outrank us do it on less money per person.

To brand everything that involves the government as "socialist medicine" is demagoguery. Healthcare in various countries comes in all flavors and mixes, such as single payer, private practice, private insurance. Private practice, government insurance. And so on. And the U.S. is itself a mixture.

Great Britain has socialist medicine where the government owns the facilities and the providers are government employees. So does the U.S. with it's VA and Indian Health Services.

France has single payer, private practice coverage. Just like U.S. Medicare. Further, doctors offices have hardly any files or non-medical staff. All electronic and centrally available for access among all of a patient's healthcare providers. No need for a staff of insurance verifiers with a single payer. Plus, by law, the doctors are paid in days.

Reid explains how healthcare works with these various combinations as the takes the reader from one country to another, exposing the strengths and weaknesses of each. Further, he talks about how medical procedure and device, and drug innovation are alive and well overseas.

Perhaps best, the doctors in these countries like focusing 100% on the patient instead of spending so much effort fighting insurance companies.

The book is factual and experiential, not the pure propaganda coming out of the proponents and opponents of various U.S. healthcare proposals.

The goal of the book is to show the reader that more can be had for less. Better healthcare for much less money is not only an idea, it's a reality. There is plenty to copy, if we can just avoid politicizing and polarizing the subject. If you want something besides the political polemics, this is a must read.

(An invaluable assessment)
『THE HEALING OF AMERICA: A GLOBAL QUEST FOR BETTER, CHEAPER, AND FAIRER HEALTH CARE isn't just another coverage of America's healthcare pros and cons: it provides an assessment of various healthcare systems around the world, arguing that solutions to problems already exist in other systems. He travels of wealthy, industrialized democracies like our own and gathers reports from doctors, government officials and patients alike to consider how foreign countries provide quality health care at a reasonable cost. An invaluable assessment.』

(Everyone should read this book)
『Given all the confusion and spin out there, this is a book that everyone who has any concerns about the future of healthcare in America should read. It lays to rest many of the myths circulating about the various options under consideration, and does so by analyzing a number of systems employed throughout the industialized world, East and West, fairly stating strengths and weaknesses. The book is easy reading and a deft presentation of what could be a dry and difficult subject.』

(Why Fear Learning From Our Friends?)
『If you never saw the ocean, you might think your local swimming hole is a pretty big body of water.

That's the problem with people who think our American health care system is the best in the world: they have never gone to see if anything is better.

Pride in your local swimming hole is harmless, but health care is life and death. Only an arrogant fool would think that THEY know all the answers, and cannot possibly learn from our friends in Germany, Japan, France, Canada, India and the U.K.. A wise man would go there, try their system, and see what ideas we can borrow for ourselves.

In this book, T. R. Reid does every American a great service by taking his bum shoulder around the world to be looked at and treated. What he finds will surprise anyone who thinks the rest of the world is a socialist hell, burdened by grey bureaucrats staffing drably uniformed Death Panels. The facts that he finds is that each of those nations has a different system, tuned to their particular histories, and with strengths and weaknesses. Most are dominated by private suppliers, e.g. doctors who run their own offices, and full of useful ideas we can employ ... if we are not too prideful.

This book provides an actual experience of seeking health care around the world; this makes it is a direct threat to those who benefit from our current arrangements. Our existing system has enormous institutional inertia. Reid tries to demonstrate that inertia can be overcome, in describing how Taiwan and Switzerland converted their systems around the time that the Clinton initiatives failed. I suspect, unfortunately, that our American system will be a trickier conversion, because the forces arrayed against reform are mightly rich; you cannot take a juicy steak away from a pack of hungry dogs without getting bitten.

If you're in a hurry, you will appreciate that this book is a quick read. While it's got plenty of footnotes so you can verify the assertions and learn more, its organization lends itself to grabbing a quick chapter while you can. I especially enjoyed the chapters about each nation; they were like a short story of a visitor seeking help and happened when he did. I was shocked to discover that, on average, Japanese visit doctors more than twice as often as Americans; France's information technology makes ours look like a joke; even in much-maligned Britain people's lives are saved because there is no financial barrier to coming to the doctor if you have a suspicious lump. Why are Americans afraid to learn these basic facts?

However, I found the most surprising chapter entitled "An Apple A Day". It discusses why our current system works against preventative measures. Since your insurer as a youth will not be your insurer in old age, the former has no reason to do anything that would benefit only the latter. If a private insurer can put off dealing with a problem until the patient turns 65, the private insurer may not have to deal with it at all! It is a perfect example of how what is economically efficient in individual health PAYMENT transactions results in systemic inefficiency in the overall health CARE system.

However, the most important chapter may be "The First Question". Ultimately health care is not a financial question; it is a moral question. What kind of nation are we? What kind of people are we?

If we are content that a woman shall live or die depending solely upon whether she is the president of a company or its minimum-wage floor-mopper, then we need do nothing. We have that system already. Of course, we can't be very proud of that; it's basically a return to the hells of Upton Sinclair.

If, however, we are a more decent people, we believe that all of us should have a good chance at life. Life is not a luxury to be reserved, but a necessity to be shared by to all members of our community. And, best of all, as this book shows, we have friends in other nations who can show us how they did it.

It's our choice.』

(Health care in the real world looks like this)
『Reid has written a book that can and should be read by everyone in favor of real health care reform instead of revenue enhancement for the pirate health care insurance industry.

In this book he wanders a select world in theoretical search of a treatment for an old shoulder problem which started in his youth. As he visits five different countries, he does the research on the health care system and speaks with professionals as he follows the path offered in each country to treat his shoulder. He addresses the variance in approach and result in each.

There is a very interesting chapter on the history of the different systems currently in place around the world. For those who automatically fear the word "socialism" he points out that most developed countries do not, in fact, resort to socialized medicine. That is what the book is about.

This book explains why a frequent question I get from my Canadian family members is "Are you people nuts?" when ever the question of health care comes up. Reid also discusses the Canadian system's current problems frankly.

For those with a good understanding of "socialist" health care insurance this is a bit on the easy reading level but I believe it contains meat for every diner (or carrots for every vegan) and can/should be read by the sensei master of the issue as well as the initiate. Sadly, the folks who should read this probably never will as it upsets most of the scurrilous arguments being raised about health care insurance AND delivery that are being spread by those who serve the big money boys at Cigna, Aetna, UHC et. al...

Critically, the book is a bit shallow for its attempt to remain readable and the sample of five nations is a bit limited. Also, his examination remains superficial but within what I suspect Reid intended, a book that would be read by a larger audience than something that would appeal to a health care insurance wonk.

Very well written and entertaining, Reid takes an honestly turgid subject and makes it interesting and understandable. The book is short and would make a terrific textbook for groups looking to educate others about the need for single payer health care insurance but the classroom would have to be filled with people who are willing to look that they might see. The willfully blind will not go there.

This would be a terrific Christmas gift for those you love...

At the very least buy it, read it, pass it on.

Bestselling author T. R. Reid guides a whirlwind tour of successful health care systems worldwide, revealing possible paths toward U.S. reform.

InThe Healing of America, New York Timesbestselling author T. R. Reid shows how all the other industrialized democracies have achieved something the United States can't seem to do: provide health care for everybody at a reasonable cost.

In his global quest to find a possible prescription, Reid visits wealthy, free market, industrialized democracies like our own-including France, Germany, Japan, the U.K., and Canada-where he finds inspiration in example. Reid shares evidence from doctors, government officials, health care experts, and patients the world over, finding that foreign health care systems give everybody quality care at an affordable cost. And that dreaded monster "socialized medicine" turns out to be a myth. Many developed countries provide universal coverage with private doctors, private hospitals, and private insurance.

In addition to long-established systems, Reid also studies countries that have carried out major health care reform. The first question facing these countries-and the United States, for that matter-is an ethical issue: Is health care a human right? Most countries have already answered with a resolute yes, leaving the United States in the murky moral backwater with nations we typically think of as far less just than our own.

The Healing of Americalays bare the moral question at the heart of our troubled system, dissecting the misleading rhetoric surrounding the health care debate. Reid sees problems elsewhere, too: He finds poorly paid doctors in Japan, endless lines in Canada, mistreated patients in Britain, spartan facilities in France. Still, all the other rich countries operate at a lower cost, produce better health statistics, and cover everybody. In the end,The Healing of Americais a good news book: It finds models around the world that Americans can borrow to guarantee health care for everybody who needs it.』

『The condition of the book was poor. I expected a slightly used, but clean product. It was well-used. The cover was worn in, pages dog-eared, and it was already highlighted throughout the book. I was disappointed.』

(This book has helped me change my life)
『One of the most helpful, well written "self help" books on the market. I would highly recommend it and easily give it a 5 star rating.』

(excellent book - changed my life)
『A lot of people say "this changed my life" and throw that out there for just about everything, but I really feel this way about Codependent No More. I was in a crazy relationship, which seemed perfectly healthy from the inside, but started to have little problems here and there. A friend at work recommended it to me and it took only a couple of chapters, where the author tells the stories of people she has known, for me to see myself in those situations. Then I realized I really did have problems. Fortunately, the book tells how to fix them. :)

Because of this book, I have been able to set better boundaries in both personal and business relationships. It has really made a different. Not everything is perfect, so don't expect your situation to magically transform after reading this, but you will have a different insight as to what you are involved with and what you can do about it.

Beyond anything, I feel this book offers a lot of hope and that is certainly something we can all use more of.』

(A good way to start your journey out of codependency)
『The book definetely describes the codependency problem very well, specially on chapter four, where it lists all the sad things you've been doing to deal with oppressive or manipulative people, but you are too ashamed to admit you do them. It's like a crude view from the mirror that you wouldn't have except for if you went to a shrink. So, it's a good way to describe how bad the situation is for you and what you need to work to get out of it. However, as I'd say all psychological issues, there's no formula that will work for everybody. Each case is a unique case. And once you know what the problem is you still will take quite a long time to figure out how you will live a life that is truly your own. Whether is an authoritarian parent or some relative which makes you think he/she will die if you don't give him/her attention or an alchoholic spouse that is demanding 100% of your attention, will power, free time and energy, you will still have to figure out what to do with this weight on your life for which you also have some feelings and with all the rest of things and people on your life that are important but for years you couldn't pay attention to them.
So, I really recommend reading this book, specially the first 10 chapters, for you to finally feel that it might not be your fault what is happening on your life that is driving you crazy. I really recommend reading this book for you to start thinking differently and for you to see that there is a light in the end of the tunnel. But, it's important to state that fixing your life might really take several months or years and might require professional help so that there are no disappointments on the results of reading this book.』

(fast shipping, great condition)
『Good transaction! The book was exactly as presented, shipped quickly and the transaction went smoothly! Great merchant.』

(My Review of "You On A Diet")
『I have watched these two Doctors on TV and was anxious to read this book. I ordered it and am pleased with the detailed, healthy information it contains.

I received my book in the time frame as promised and found it to be in excellent condition.』

(How I learned to manage my waist)
『I thought for years I couldn't lose weight. My blood pressure was too high, my cholesterol was high and my clothes didn't look good on me. One night we happened to see Dr. Oz on Charlie Rose talking about his book and I made up my mind to buy this book and try it. I found it on amazon.com and had it within a week. This was in 2007. While I was reading it I started doing the things suggested, changing the way I thought about food and started losing weight. Following the things outlined, I lost 30 pounds and have kept it off. I went from a size 12 jeans to a size 4. My cholesterol and blood pressure came down. This is the third book I have ordered because I want to share my success with my friends and family.』

(Very Helpful Book)
『I enjoyed the fun and helpful way this information is presented. Info I'd never heard before and really needed to understand to help motivate me to do what is best for my body.』

(You On a Diet)
『pages were too busy for me...had trouble following...reminded me of books out of the "Idiots/Dummies" series..』

(You on a diet review)
『I purchased this book from Amazon because I was so pleased with my last purchase "You Staying Young" by the same authors Dr.Roizen and Dr.Mehmet Oz.The book is very easy reading with many illustrations of how things work(in the body),illustrations of helpful exercises.and examples of menus for diets to achieve your goals.I wouldn't hesitate on buying any future books by Dr. Rozien and Dr.Oz.』
『Whether your goal for your body is to lose a dress size or to avoid being seen by Google Earth, many Americans are in the same exact blubbery boat. You've tried dozens of diets, you've sweated so much that your drippings could fill an Olympic-size pool, and you've become convinced that skinny was synonymous with starvation. Those answers undoubtedly were the wrong ones. The real secret to achieving -- and maintaining -- the body you want is this: biology.

InYOU: On a Diet, Dr. Michael Roizen and Dr. Mehmet Oz taught you how to avoid the most common dieting pitfalls -- from both a biological and psychological perspective. This revised edition has all of the original goods, and more! In this edition, you'll learn why fructose is such a poison to an overweight person and why your weight doesn't matter as much as your waist size. You'll learn about the inner workings of an organ called the omentum. You'll learn why it's okay to make some dieting mistakes -- and then how to reverse them. And you'll learn -- perhaps most important -- that the way to truly change your size is by making the simplest change of all: reducing your daily diet by just 100 calories. Research shows that making this small adjustment will lead to the greatest, long-term dieting success.

With this knowledge (and plenty of tools you can use) in hand, you'll be fully equipped to coax your body in the right direction. Using their signature style that's smart and fun, America's most trusted doctors will teach you all about your body -- so you can take all the right steps to change it.』
Book Description
For the first time in our history, scientists are uncovering astounding medical evidence about dieting--and why so many of us struggle with our weight and the size of our waists. Now researchers are unraveling biological secrets about such things as why you crave chocolate or gorge at buffets or store so much fat.

Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz, America's most trusted doctor team and authors of the bestsellingYOUseries, are now translating this cutting-edge information to help you shave inches off your waist. They're going to do it by giving you the best weapon against fat: knowledge. By understanding how your body's fat-storing and fat-burning systems work, you're going to learn how to crack the code on true and lifelong waist management.

Roizen and Oz will invigorate you with equal parts information, motivation, and change-your-life action to show you how your brain, stomach, hormones, muscles, heart, genetics, and stress levels all interact biologically to determine if your body is the size of a baseball bat or of a baseball stadium. InYOU: On a Diet, Roizen and Oz will redefine what a healthy figure is, then take you through an under-the-skin tour of the organs that influence your body's size and its health. You'll even be convinced that the key number to fixate on is not your weight, but your waist size, which best indicates the medical risks of storing too much fat.

Because the world has almost as many diet plans as it has e-mail spammers, you'd think that just about all of us would know everything there is to know about dieting, about fat, and about the reasons why our bellies have grown so large.YOU: On a Dietis much more than a diet plan or a series of instructions and guidelines or a faddish berries-only eating plan. It's a complete manual for waist management. It will show you how to achieve and maintain an ideal and healthy body size by providing a lexicon according to which any weight-loss system can be explained.YOU: On a Dietwill serve as the operating system that facilitates future evolution in our dieting software. After you learn about the biology of your body and the biology and psychology of fat, you'll be given theYOUDiet andYOUWorkout. Both are easy to learn, follow, and maintain. Following a two-week rebooting program will help you lose up to two inches from your waist right from the start.

With Roizen and Oz's signature accessibility, wit, and humor,YOU: On a Diet--The Owner's Manual for Waist Managementwill revolutionize the way you think about yourself and the food you consume, so that you'll diet smart, not hard. Welcome to your body on a diet.

"Fat Chances: The Secret Story of What's in Your Belly" by Michael F. Roizen, MD, and Mehmet C. Oz, MD
Whether you're carrying a few extra pounds of fat on your thighs or a suitcase's worth in your belly, it's hard not to think about fat. You feel it when you walk, you roll on it when you sleep, and you curse it when you try to slide into last year's jeans. But while most of us are intimately familiar with how fat looks on the outside, we're not quite as familiar with how it works on the inside.

As we explain inYOU: On a Diet, we believe that tochangeyour body, you need to know your body.

In the simplest form, everyone knows the formula for gaining weight. Daily buckets of ranch dip plus photo-album-sized hunks of cheesecake plus a life of couch-dwelling equals a very unfortunate conclusion: too-frequent popped buttons.

But many of us really don't know how fat works and how it works against us. Here's the inside story on the story of your insides.

(Ok)
『Umm you can watch a movie that is on the web that covers all the info that's in this book. I understand that we need to eat more sustainable products, and that we should stay clear of GMO food products. this book was a waist of money, and the info enclosed in its covers is readily available on the web. Any foodie should already know the information that is in this book.
I'm a chef, and I guess this is a good read for a high school kid that's interested in the negative effects of humanity on the environment pertaining to food sources. I thought this book was more of a historical reference to the concepts behind the multiple course meal, I was wrong, hence forth the reason that I'm giving it 2 stars.』

(Mostly fascinating with occasional flights into silliness)
『When the author is explaining the food chain, he's well-informed, specific, and highly entertaining. Every now and then, he lapses into deeply silly philosophical mode, particularly when he's trying to grapple with the reality of killing animals for food (whether by hunting or in the slaughterhouse), something his pampered urban upbringing has made it nearly impossible for him to do. So I could have used an editor's services in cutting out about 90% of his repetitive agonizing over whether he can actually bring himself to eat a chicken he helped slaughter or a pig he shot in the woods. But, boy, when he finally gets out of that rut and goes back to describing the intricacies of the food chain, is he ever wonderful. The first section, about the prevalence of corn in the industrial food chain, is an eye-opener. Another section, about Joel Salatin's fascinating experiment in sustainable agriculture in the Shenandoah Valley, is worth the whole book. Even the hunting-and-gathering section, which suffers most from his tendency to maunder, is stuffed full of goodies about things like mushroom cycles of life.』

(Fantastic Food reading)
『This is a great read, it has made me very thoughtful of what I eat and where my food comes from. The run down of how much corn or things that ate corn or used to be part of corn are in fast food was very mind opening. Drink all the soda you think you are going to want for a while before you read is my only advice.』

(Excellent! A Must Read!!)
『I really enjoyed this book. I learned a lot about, well, corn--the economics, the health issues and the politics all involved in growing and selling corn. I thought this book was well researched and I think that Mr. Pollen did a great job of truly involving himself in the experience. I mean, he spent a week, busting his butt on the farm, living and working with a complete stranger who, although well meaning, is a bit out of the bell curve.

I have to agree with another review regarding the meat. I am a non-red meat eater but I do eat poultry, eggs, and dairy. I didn't think that he was as sensitive as he could have been to those that choose a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle.

I would highly recommend this book. I can't wait to read the Botany of Desire.』

(This book may change your life.)
『Although occasionally sections of this book got a little bogged down and dragged a bit for me, overall it was very fascinating, at times horrifying, and frequently wittily entertaining. Pollan explores three main styles or methods of producing a meal: modern industrialized farming, as currently practiced in America, sustainable agriculture based on pasturing livestock, etc., as practiced on Polyface Farm in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and hunter/gatherer food production. If a book based on that premise doesn't sound like it could hold your attention and be entertaining, think again.』
『A national bestseller that has changed the way readers view the ecology of eating, this revolutionary book by award winner Michael Pollan asks the seemingly simple question: What should we have for dinner? Tracing from source to table each of the food chains that sustain us— whether industrial or organic, alternative or processed—he develops a portrait of the American way of eating. The result is a sweeping, surprising exploration of the hungers that have shaped our evolution, and of the profound implications our food choices have for the health of our species and the future of our planet.』
