Questions for Conn Iggulden Conn and Hal Iggulden are two brothers who have not forgotten what it was like to be boys. Conn taught for many years before becoming one of the most admired and popular young historical novelists with his Emperor series, based on the life of Julius Caesar, and his newly embarked series on Genghis Khan, while Hal is a theater director. We asked Conn about their collaboration. Amazon.com:It's difficult to describe what a phenomenonThe Dangerous Book for Boyswas in the UK last year. When I would check the bestseller list on our sister site, Amazon.co.uk, there would be, along with your book, which spent much of the year at the top of the list, a half-dozen apparent knockoff books of similar boy knowledge. Clearly, you tapped into something big. What do you think it was?
You only have to push a boy on a swing to see how much enjoys the thrill of danger. It's hard-wired. Remove any opportunity to test his courage and they'll find ways to test themselves that will be seriously dangerous for everyone around them. I think of it like playing the lottery--someone has to say "Look, youwon'twin--and your childrenwon'tbe hurt. Relax. Itwon'tbe you." I think that's the core of the book's success. It isn't just a collection of things to do. The heroic stories alone are something we haven't had for too long. It isn't about climbing Everest, but it is an attitude, a philosophy for fathers and sons. Our institutions are too wrapped up in terror over being sued--so we have to do things with them ourselves. This book isn't a bad place to start. As for knockoff books--great. They'll give my son something to read that doesn't involve him learning a dull moral lesson of some kind--just enjoying an adventure or learning skills and crafts so that he has a feeling of competence and confidence--just as we have. Amazon.com:You made some changes for the U.S. edition, and I for one am sorry that you have removed the section on conkers, if only because it's such a lovely and mysterious word. What are (or what is) conkers? Iggulden:Horse chestnuts strung on a shoelace and knocked against one another until they shatter. In the entire history of the world, no one has ever been hurt by a conker, but it's still been banned by some British schools, just in case. Another school banned paper airplanes. Honestly, it's enough to make you weep, if I did that sort of thing, which I try not to. Reading Jane Austen is still allowed, however. Amazon.com:What knowledge did you decide was important to add for American boys? I notice in both editions you have an excellent and useful section on table football, as played with coins. Is paper football strictly an American pastime? I'm not sure I could have gotten through the fourth grade without it. Iggulden:I like knowing the details of battles, so Gettysburg and the Alamo had to go in, along with the Gettysburg address, stickball, state capitals, U.S. mountains, American trees, insects, U.S. historical timelines, and a lot of others. Navajo code talkers of WWII is a great chapter. It probably helps that I am a huge fan of America. It was only while rewriting for the U.S. that I realized how many positive references there already are. You have NASA and NASA trumps almost anything. As for paper football, ever since I thought of putting the book together, people keep saying things like "You have rockets in there, yes? Everyone loves rockets!" Paper football is the first American one, but there will be many others. No book in the world is long enough to put them all in--unless we do a sequel, of course. Amazon.com:Do you thinkThe Dangerous Book for Boysis being read by actual boys, or only by nostalgic adults? Have you seen boys getting up from their Xboxes to go outside and perform first aid or tan animal skins or build go-carts? Iggulden:I've had a lot of emails and letters from boys who loved the book--as well as fathers. I've had responses from kids as young as ten and an old man of 87, who pointed out a problem with the shadow stick that we've since changed. The thing to remember is that we may be older and more cynical every year, but boys simply aren't. If they are given the chance to make a go-cart with their dad, they jump at it. Mine did. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to know the book is being used with fathers and sons together, trying things out. Nothing is more valuable to a boy than time with his dad, learning something fun--or something difficult. That's part of the attitude too. If it's hard, you don't make it easy, you grab it by the throat and hang on for as long as it takes. The book is often bought by fathers, of course. Their sons don't know Scott of the Antarctic is a great adventure story. How could they if it isn't taught any more? Good, heroic stories don't appear much in modern school curriculums--and then we wonder why boys don't seem interested. Amazon.com:And finally, on to the important questions: Should Pluto still be a planet? And what was the best dinosaur? Iggulden:Pluto is a planet. I know there are scientists who say it isn't, but it's big enough to be round and it has a moon, for crying out loud. Of course it's a planet. Give it ten years and they'll be agreeing with me again. As for the best dinosaur, it depends what you mean by best. For sheer perfection, it probably has to be the shark and the crocodile. Modern ones are smaller but their record for sheer survival is pretty impressive. I only hope humanity can do as well. The only thing that will stop us is worrying too much. 』『 The Dangerous Book for Boys > 『 The Dangerous Book for Boys > 『 The Daring Book for Girls > 『 The Daring Book for Girls > 『 The Pocket Dangerous Book for Boys: Things to Do > 『 The Pocket Dangerous Book for Boys: Things to Do > 『 How To Be The Best At Everything (The Boys' Book) > 『 How To Be The Best At Everything (The Boys' Book) > 『 The Dangerous Book for Boys Game > 『 The Dangerous Book for Boys Game > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 The Daring Book for Girls > 『 The Daring Book for Girls > 『 The Dangerous Book for Boys > 『 The Dangerous Book for Boys > 『 How To Be The Best At Everything (The Girls' Book) > 『 How To Be The Best At Everything (The Girls' Book) > 『 The Double-Daring Book for Girls > 『 The Double-Daring Book for Girls > 『 The Pocket Daring Book for Girls: Wisdom&Wonder > 『 The Pocket Daring Book for Girls: Wisdom&Wonder > 『 How To Be The Best At Everything (The Boys' Book) > Andrea J. The author lives in a fantasy world where cartoon characters, Santa Clause, and the tooth fairy are real flesh and blood. Where we can carry on a full conversation with animals and interperate their replys and thoughts. They became attached to each other, and Kerasote decided to name the dog Merle and bring him home. There, he realized that Merle’s native intelligence would be diminished by living exclusively in the human world. He put a dog door in his house so Merle could live both outside and in. A deeply touching portrait of a remarkable dog and his relationship with the author, Merle’s Door explores the issues that all animals and their human companions face as their lives intertwine, bringing to bear the latest research into animal consciousness and behavior as well as insights into the origins and evolution of the human-dog partnership. Merle showed Kerasote how dogs mightlive if they were allowed to make more of their own decisions, and Kerasote suggests how these lessons can be applied universally. 『 Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog > 『 Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog > 『 Amazing Gracie: A Dog's Tale > 『 Amazing Gracie: A Dog's Tale > 『 The Art of Racing in the Rain: A Novel > 『 The Art of Racing in the Rain: A Novel > 『 Lost&Found > 『 Lost&Found > 『 Out There: In the Wild in a Wired Age > 『 Out There: In the Wild in a Wired Age > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson > 『 A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson > 『 In a Sunburned Country > 『 In a Sunburned Country > 『 The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America > 『 The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America > 『 I'm a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away > 『 I'm a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away > 『 Neither Here nor There: Travels in Europe > 『 Neither Here nor There: Travels in Europe > 『 A Short History of Nearly Everything > Bill Bryson > price: Doubleday Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review ("Let The Challenge Begin") ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Of all the books I have read in the last year, Bryson's "A Walk In The Woods", is by far the most amusing and captivating. It was a referral from my sister, who, as an avid hiker, read the novel and insisted I share the time with her. I have laughed, and been angered, been surprised, and prompted to finally take a hike on the AT (Appalchiatian Trail), and that is quite a challenge for me at 70. Truley a "must read" for the adventuresome. Bob Bower』 (Witty rambles through the brambles) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Bill Bryson is a funny man...plunking down a humorous spin on hiking the Appalachian Trail. The upshot is a spirited, clever and pleasurable read. Not only an amusing jaunt through the Appalachians, but also a reality check as to what has happened and is occurring from Georgia to Maine along this trail. We read of Bryson's opinions of the National Parks, Forest Service, local governments, etc. and everything in between, all with an obvious and bantering twist. Although he completed only 870 of the 2200 miles of the Appalachian Trail, that in itself was a major accomplishment for someone who simply wanted to sense the ambiance. Bryson plays off of history, landscapes and especially the people he meets on the trail. A quippy and gifted approach to learning about this trail corridor. 』 (A disappointment) ![]() ![]() 『If you are looking to be inspired by someone who thru hiked the Appalachian trail then dont read this book. If you want inspiration by someone who actually accomplished something amazing then read something by Dean Karnazes or by someone who actually thru hiked it. Bryson quit a fraction a the way through. Then hiked bits and pieces of it with his car and lunches packed by his wife the day before. Plus he criticizes nearly every other hiker on the trail including his out of shape, poorly chosen hiking partner. He also criticizes nearly every organization on the way from the Forest Service to the Army Corp of Engineers. Bits and pieces of the book were funny. I actually like Bryson's works but this book was a huge let down. So if you want to know what its like to thru hike the AT then this is NOT the book to read. Disappointing 』 (Simply delightful for the hiking enthusiast) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『People had recommended this book to me for years. I am so happy I finally bought it and read it. It truly did make me laugh out loud, which is so refreshing. I love to hike, and to laugh. I have not hiked the AT, but have done day hikes in the north east on it. I know "through-hikers" and I'm sure it is even more poignant for them. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves to hike, even if you are only a fare weather enthusiast. It makes you appreciate the sheer tenacity of the through hiker and what wisdom, or confirmation of foolishness can be achieved by hiking the AT.』 (A Slow Walk) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This is my introduction to Bill Bryson. I find his writing open, honest and inviting. This story is of true fascination, little surivival, and little talking. If you're interested in 2100 miles of rugged wilderness known as the AT (Appalachian Trail), or if you don't give a damn, like I did, then this book is also for you believe it or not. Very few authors manage to weave boring facts of political, scientific and historical significance to a story, and make it readable, as well as Mr. Bryson. He doesn't brag, he doesn't toot his horn, nor does he belittle himself, he just tells a story we should all know. If someone were to offer me this book, and tell me it's about someone who walks in the woods...I'd probably take it heartily and use its pages to line my bird cages with. This book, is not one of those books! Ok, I've been nice enough, so I can start to do a little critic shredding. I should warn...the chapters are heavy, they're drawn out. You may reach points, when you'd wish, the author would hog-tie his friend Katz squirt some bee honey on him, crush some Snicker bars around him and leave him for the bears...but Bill's a nice guy, he checks his patience regularly and moves on. I like this story, I don't love it. Forgive me, because I know it is considered a self-inflicted thing. But similarly, many of these incidents are indeed, self-inflicted. Regardless, Gonzales describes the deep feeling of being lost and the decision to survive; an abiding faith and the healing power of service. He analyzes the steps that lead someone who is on the brink of despair to enter into a life of recovery. He qualifies the ingredients that make a hopeless addict into someone of value who is a survivor. A must read for people in sobriety.』 (It Worked for Me) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I haven't read all the customer reviews ... don't need to... He nailed it. I read this when it first came out. The book jumped off the library shelf and into a self-study course of reading I'd created for myself along with some introductory aikido so I could begin to understand and teach something of value to my athletic children. (Their success was mind-blowing, but that's not the story here.) "Deep Survival" was one of over 250 books I'd read on performance and sports psychology and a wide range of mind-body-spirit topics. Some many years later, at age 59, having not been to a doctor in too many years, I was suddenly diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and aortic stenosis requiring valve transplant through open=heart surgery. I'd been a professional in the emergency medical response field at high levels in response, training, and planning, and one of the first rules I taught was the importance of calling 911. But right after the diagnosis I moved to hilly WV and had a sudden onset of rapidly-increasing pleural edema; the advancing shortness of breath and pink frothy sputum told me to get into my car alone and drive immediately to the hospital four miles away. I made it just in time. I vomited and blacked out on arrival and spent the weekend in the ICU. Monday morning, during a chemical stress test, I went into cardiac arrest; they revived me and transferred me downtown where, the next morning, I underwent valve replacement with incidental bypass. When they closed me up, I continued to bleed internally and was transfused over 20 units; they opened me back up, sewed the bleed, and closed me back up. During that event, I had a multiplex dual-hemisphere stroke involving mostly the left side motor functions; when I awoke four days later, I could not move my arm more than two inches, and I could not move my leg at all. Six weeks later, in what every doctor who was familiar with the case called a miracle, I walked out of the rehab unit and, four weeks later, no longer needing the wheelchair or the walker, I walked into their offices. I am now fully ambulatory again, and danced at my daughter's wedding this past summer. I am going to purchase the book this time and enjoy the pleasure of reading it ... from the other side of my own personal abyss.』 (Love the Stories, and the Advice is Excellent) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This was an interesting book. It dealt with the topic of survival situations that caused people to die or live. There are numerous psychological processes that take place that indicate the likelihood of someone living. The book is well written with stories explaining the principles of survival. If you are someone who explores the unknown or travels to distance places in the wilderness, this book will give you some insight in how to live. A lot of times, it is not the skill set that a person has, but the mindset the individual uses to get himself or herself through the ordeal. That's why the remake of The Titanic was such a big hit. It was one of the world's most celebrated disasters, starring one of the world's most celebrated movie stars. It couldn't miss. Laurence Gonzales has written an extremely engaging study into the mysterious realm of survival; why some people have what it takes to get through a crisis and some don't. This book goes hand in hand with a couple of other interesting studies of survival---The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes - and Why (Amanda Ripley) and The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science that Could Save Your Life (Ben Sherwood). Not surprisingly, all three books come to the same basic conclusions for survival; and that's comforting. You'd hate to have one author telling you one thing and another telling you something entirely different; who would you trust? Gonzales tells several fascinating stories; his writing style is eloquent and riveting. His revelations are fairly predictable; possibly since I'd read the aforementioned books before this one. Examining such stories of miraculous endurance and tragic death—how people get into trouble and how they get out again (or not)—Deep Survivaltakes us from the tops of snowy mountains and the depths of oceans to the workings of the brain that control our behavior. Through close analysis of case studies, Laurence Gonzales describes the "stages of survival" and reveals the essence of a survivor—truths that apply not only to surviving in the wild but also to surviving life-threatening illness, relationships, the death of a loved one, running a business during uncertain times, even war. I am pleased that it covers so many topics I want my kids to know well, e.g., batik techniques and history (p.99), commonly confused words like imply and infer (p. 141), and the specifics of quality private eye work (p. 177). What I truly appreciate, and what makes the Daring books transcend the How To label, is the activities' historical and often rebellious context. Why should our kids want to know how to waltz (p. 78)? How about because it was considered scandalous -- the dancing partners touched! And vulgar, forbidden -- it was easy to learn and didn't require a dance master! Mostly, I am dazzled by the amount of good, hard, enticingly written information amassed in the Double Daring book. I want kids to know everything in it. I want them all to know exactly who Eleanor of Aquitaine was, and how startling her long, accomplished, independent life was compared to most women of her era. I want them to know the fundamentals of rhetoric, how to make a raft, the story of Ada Lovelace, how to join the circus, how to say thank you in scores of languages, how to make snowglobes, how to conduct an orchestra, and how to make rope ladders. The Double Daring book is buoyed by positivity, and focuses on cultivating competence, independence, willingness to experiment, and open-ended fun. It provides multiple short biographies of women whose lives exemplified these attitudes. These role models are an antidote to heavily-marketed (and in some cases marketing-originated) books like The Clique series, which my daughter and her friends crave, and in which junior high-aged girls live lives of insecurity, negativity, and cruelty, while obsessing about label-spangled fashion, unrealistic body images, and social machinations. Weather you like hiking and backpacking or are looking to be more self sufficiant this book has something for you. Its a great guide for how to be prepaired in any circumstance.』 (Interesting, good read, but not very practical) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Let's start with the shortcomings, which become very obvious as soon as you pick up the book: - Book is huge and heavy, it is the size of a laptop PC, sort of coffee table sized. It is highly impractical to take something this big with you and use it as a reference. It is even a little too large to read comfortably at home. So it fails at being a "Manual" as the long title implies. - Inconsistent topical coverage: there are chapters and passages about high level geopolitics and analysis of oil deposits, etc. which are followed by minute details about building a fire or cleaning a wound. Basically, the books tries to be an A-Z encyclopedia of sustainability and survival, which proves hard to do. - Not a particularly good *survival* guide. Kind of follows from the points above, too bulky and too much volume devoted to other stuff. However, also the typical survival topics are not covered with enough detail, and at times it felt like some content was lifted from other books (e.g. survival kits, animal snares), or at least overlapped enough to make it more worth your time to read more compact dedicated survival guides. So what is good about this book? - Comprehensive, covers a lot of topics, with good overview and pointers to further reading. Quotes and summarizes a lot of other writing on "long emergency" and survival, so you can spare yourself reading a ton of other books and get the gist of many topics. If you are interested in the details, however, you will have to read those other books. - Discussion of "long emergency" and sustainable living topics is excellent. Basically, these are the non-how-to portions of the book. Things like analysis of global warming, oil deposits, alternative energy, energy efficient buildings, etc. More focused and more readable than many other books I have encountered on these topics. - Extensive bibliography about all the topics discussed. Each chapter has a list of books, magazines, and retail outlets, with the author's summary of what they are about and recommendations. This is a great starting point for exploring any topic in depth. - Intelligent, logical, calm writing style. Although the topic is emergency and survival, the author does not come across as paranoid or extreme in his opinions. It is clear that the author has done a lot of research and done a great job summarizing and presenting it. Overall, the book is a pleasure to read as a result of that. This is a great book to introduce you to the overall survival and sustainable living topics, after which you are better off getting other resources as your go-to manuals and references.』 (Sigh, another one...) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Its really quite a 'good' book. I keep expecting to find something with fresh, new ideas.』 (Preachy at times, but a very useful book) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『All of the skills necessary to survive any disaster whether at home or in the wild. This is a book you want to keep, read over and over and practice after you read it. Very well written with many drawings illustrating the needed skills. The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is that the book can get a bit preachy as to why technology will fail. One chapter would have sufficed as to what could happen. Instead the authors get into many theories in almost every chapter. While I agree with most of the theories, some are a bit out there, including things that haven't even been fully proven yet.』 (The author misses much, but very good) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This book is EXCELLENT at teaching us to live a sustainable and green life style, and to survive a loss of our electronic gizmos if that were ever to occur. As someone deeply interested in greening my life, this book is excellent. The tips are wonderful. The resources great. In terms of this content, I would give the book 5 stars. Amish and Mennonite Americans have been living this sustainable life style for ever. I admire them greatly, and one of the strengths of this book is showing us how we can all "get off the grid" and make the world a better place. However, sadly, the author's ideology is deeply flawed in some respects, especially when it comes to population growth. In the introduction (which descends into fear mongering) the author talks about the so called proven problems with population. This is a falsehood as the book Population Control: Real Costs, Illusory Benefits clearly shows. Population growth will only be a danger if we refuse to treat the world with respect. An Amish family with 12 kids living on a farm off the grid using cloth diapers and sustainable farming practices actually would help green the planet, whereas a typical American family of four, with both parents off working and commuting in SUVs with annual vacations by plane and the children off in inefficient schools instead of home-schools will do serious harm to the planet. If one compares the two families, the modern family is the menace, not the children themselves. The family of 12 living sustainably is a gift, the family of 4 living in a rush to consume is the problem. Human existence, and human babies are NOT the problem (as much as the inconsisent ideologues on the eco-left would have us believe). Furthermore, as much as I am very interested in greening the planet (and am living my life accordingly increasingly year by year) much of this book's introduction is fear mongering. It reads like Malthus. He was wrong. So is this author. If we all take small steps, we can help change the world. There is no reason to go crazy moving to farms. While we are considering the population question, the author I am sure is a big fan of chemical contraceptives which are imperiling our water supply and our planet themselves. As women who take the pill use our water supply to flush their waste, an INCREDIBLE amount of estrogen is finding its way into our rivers. Fish are failing to reproduce and frogs are dying off in disturbing rates as a result. This proven fact is largely ignored simply because of politics, but the studies showing the problem are relatively clear. One could use Natural Family Planning and the effects on the environment are ZERO, even as the method is 99% effective. (See The Art of Natural Family Planning or Taking Charge of Your Fertility, 10th Anniversary Edition: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health) Zero chemicals in the water, zero latex in the landfills, and our bodies are not marred by expensive surgeries. So, this book tends to be ideologically extreme and unbalanced. But that shouldn't stop you from reading the book and profiting from its strengths. These criticisms out the way (the ideology of this author was really off-putting), the ideas about off the grid living, green living, sustainable living, and electricity-free living are wonderful, if predictable. Just don't tell the Amish to stop having babies. It isn't necessary.』 『There’s never been a better time to “be prepared.” Matthew Stein’s comprehensive primer on sustainable living skills—from food and water to shelter and energy to first-aid and crisis-management skills—prepares you to embark on the path toward sustainability. I've never read a book that gave the source but ignored adding page numbers. It's a basic tradition of scholarship: Give exact details so readers can confirm the source. Readers who want to verify a quote from _Varieties of Religious Experience_, for example, might need an hour or more to find the context; a considerate scholar will give the page and so guide readers in an instant. My guess is that most high school students are taught this need early, surely no later than senior year, so I'm sure most readers and writers will see my complaint as no mere quibble. Time is precious; we always have less time to read than we need. If I must take time rereading a book to confirm a quote, then I've lost time that could have gone to other studies. Another reviewer notes that the book reads like a collection of anecdotes, soon tiring the reader. I feel some of that weariness, but was glad to read and compare tales. According to Wikipedia, the "Third Man" factor is a phenomenon in which an unseen presence provides comfort or support during traumatic experiences. The most famous example is recorded by Sir Ernest Shackleton, who said in his book about the harrowing final leg of his epic tale of struggle and survival in the Antarctic region "during that long and racking march of thirty-six hours over the unnamed mountains and glaciers of South Georgia, it seemed to me often that we were four, not three." Since then, numerous other reports of a strikingly similar nature have come to light. Geiger's book describes many of these experiences in vivid language. Interestingly, it is not only people "in extremis" who experience the feeling of another presence at certain times in their lives. Geiger also describes many such examples, from the invisible friends of young children to the experiences of religious mystics. A surprising number of people sense the presence of a loved one after death. Others have had vivid experiences of Guardian Angels at critical points in their lives. Geiger makes the point that our minds have an ability to evoke "sensed presences" in many critical situations and that this is a powerful evolved survival mechanism. He marshalls good scientific evidence for this claim. It is all quite credible, but sometimes he seems to want to believe his hypothesis too much and reads too much into the evidence. However that may be, it is the stories themselves that make this book well worth buying. We can choose whatever explanation we like for the "third man factor." I am a keen trekker in the mountains and have travelled in some remote places. While I don't have a personal third man story to tell, Geiger's book gives me much comfort that a third man may come even to me in some future hour of need. There is an excellent list of notes for readers who want to delve further into the subject.』 (Stressing the point too much) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Very interesting subject, author is knowledgeable on it, but unfortunately spends too much time over stressing the point of each chapter by overloading the reader with too much supporting evidence or stories. Selecting a few key stories for each section might have made for a better read.』 『The Third Man Factor is an extraordinary account of how people at the very edge of death experience the sense of an unseen presence beside them who encourages them to make one final effort to survive. This incorporeal being offered them a feeling of hope, protection, and guidance, and left the person convinced he or she was not alone. There is a name for this phenomenon: It's called the Third Man Factor. If only a handful of people had ever encountered the Third Man, it might be dismissed as an unusual delusion shared by a few overstressed minds. But over the years, the experience has occurred again and again, to 9/11 survivors, mountaineers, divers, polar explorers, prisoners of war, sailors, shipwreck survivors, aviators, and astronauts. All have escaped traumatic events only to tell strikingly similar stories of having sensed the close presence of a helper or guardian. The force has been explained as everything from hallucination to divine intervention. Recent neurological research suggests something else. Bestselling and award-winning author John Geiger has completed six years of physiological, psychological, and historical research on The Third Man. He blends his analysis with compelling human stories such as Ron diFrancesco, the last survivor out of the World Trade Center on 9/11; Ernest Shackleton, the legendary explorer whose account of the Third Man inspired T.S. Eliot to write of it in The Wasteland; Jerry Linenger, a NASA astronaut who experienced The Third Man while aboard the Mir space station-and many more.
