Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Blue Book Review 30th) 『 I use the book and find it quite detailed. It is a great tool for pricing and determining the myriad details about guns. The problem for me is that the individual guns of interest are a bit hard to track down with the listing system utilized in the book. It is certainly worth having and keeping.』
(The Blue Book of Gun Values) 『This book is a great source of information regarding current prices of antique and modern firearms as well as a tool to date their manufacture and grade their appearance / condition. I'll be buying one every year. Thanks.』

Now if people can understand that there beat up old mossberg shotgun is not worth 100 value we will be good to go..lol There needs to be mor ein the front of the book that tells how to rate a gun...』
(The one and only...) 『I bought this book for my husband, an avid gun collector. In his opinion this book is the gun collectors bible. The one and only book a serious collector needs. He was delighted with the gift and thinks I am wonderful. Win win!』

There's good news for all shooting fans and gun owners from Skyhorse Publishing: "Shooter's Bible: 101st Edition" is back with all the old familiar features -- plus many new ones.
The 608-page large format paperback book retails for $29.95, a bargain price, considering how much information about rifles, shotguns, revolvers, autoloaders, black powder rifles and pistols, scopes, ammunition and all the paraphernalia associated with shooting is included.
The new edition, edited by Jay Cassell, includes a history of the publication, which got its start as a mail order catalog in 1923 for the Stoeger Arms Corp. of New York City. Stoeger Arms was acquired in 2000 by the Benelli Corp., which shut down Stoeger Publishing last year after only a limited number of copies of the 100th edition were produced, making it almost unavailable to shooters. Skyhorse has also acquired to rights to other Stoeger titles. Since it began publishing in its familiar form, an average of 100,000 copies of the book have sold every year, for a total of about 7 million. The Skyhorse Publishing 101st edition makes this an ideal holiday present for any shooter and/or gun collector.
Curious as to what a 100th edition would sell for, I checked Amazon.com and found three new copies listed, from $134.50 and three used ones from the same price point!
"Shooter's Bible" is simply the most complete reference guide for new products, specifications, and up-to-date prices on thousands of firearms and related equipment. This edition of "Shooter's Bible" contains a series of informative feature articles by nationally recognized firearms experts writing on subjects ranging from hunting and shooting to firearms technology and history. Also included are up-to-date and comprehensive handgun and rifle ballistic tables along with extensive charts of currently available bullets and projectiles for handloading.
New this year is a feature on the 50 Best Guns Ever Made, which is certain to be controversial, given how opinionated gun owners are. As a gun owner and shooter myself, I'm going to read this feature thoroughly. I noticed that the Ruger 10/22 rifle is included, a gun I've owned and enjoyed. I don't currently have a 10/22, but this will be remedied before the year is out! Somehow, when I sold my 10/22 a year or so ago, I kept one of the magazines. The only two military arms in the list are the Springfield Model 1903 and the Model 98 Mauser, two classic bolt-action rifles.
Since so few of the 100th edition made it to buyers, the editors of the 101st included the 2008-2009 new products section from the 100th edition. Also in the 101st edition is a 2009-2010 new products section. The history of the "Bible" is also reprinted in the new edition, as are facsimile pages -- complete with prices -- from the very first Stoeger catalog. How about $27.50 for a Luger or $80 for a Mauser sporting rifle? There's a new Mauser Broomhandle for $35.
Thanks to Tony Lyons, founder of Skyhorse Publishing, "The Shooter's Bible" is once again available. As the English poet Robert Browning -- no relation to gun legend John M. Browning -- famously wrote (In "Pippa's Song"): "God's in His Heaven, All's Right With the World." 』 『The ultimate annual reference book for firearm collectors and enthusiasts.Published annually for more than eighty years, with more than seven million copies sold worldwide,Shooter’s Bibleis the most complete reference guide for new products, specifications, and up-to-date prices on thousands of firearms and related equipment. This is just one of many of his books, and the short stories make for a perfect bathroom reader - and hilarious escapism from my boxed-in suburban life (and three small children). If you have any wilderness experience, or wish you had, it does not get any better than Pat!』
(Not among his best books) 『I have collected all of his earlier books. This one is not up to his earlier standards. I only got two little chuckles while reading it. It is just pleasant reading, not funny. I laughed till I cried while reading the ones of many years ago.』
(CAUTION - READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!) 『Patrick McManus should only be read while sitting on the floor. That way you don't have far to fall as you laugh yourself silly.
If you have ever done any camping or outdoor activity, you will see yourself in his stories. One of the best light reads around.』
(Creating Happy Expectations for the children and then the grandchildren) 『With children and now the grandchildren turning more to electonic entertainment and away from outdoor experiences and the joys that nature can provide, I embrace Patrick McManus's unrivaled humor to create a sense of anticipation in our family for family campouts, fishing, and hunting trips. Our children graduated from Dr. Seuss to McManus for bedtime stories. They loved McManus. Now my ten year old grandson always asks for McManus stories when he visits. He laughs himself into apoplexy then begs for me to stop so he can gather himself for the next paragraph. He loves to go on hikes and fishing trips and wants to do an overnight campout this summer. Ahhhh, McManus, Thank you so much!』
(Don't you wish for simpler times?) 『As in all of his books, Pat McManus writes about simpler times that never really existed. Nevertheless, most of us would trade all of today's conveniences to live the charmed life he claimed as a boy in Blight, Idaho, or even his fantastical adult life where nothing goes right.
His self-effacing hyperbolic humor has just enough of the ring of truth (not too much truth, to be sure) that anybody who grew up in a small-town or rural environment can relate - and can continue to wonder why Bun puts up with him!
Read it. You'll smile at least once (per page), and if you haven't read any of his other works, you might warn your significant other to have the paramedics on standby. Otherwise, you might truly die laughing.』 『Patrick F. McManus's gently comic stories about outdoor life have earned him millions of fans worldwide. WithKerplunk!, McManus delivers a collection of folksy, wonderfully wise depictions of country life worthy of Mark Twain.
In these tall tales, McManus and his buddies learn how not to net a fish, why you should never get your hair cut by someone who's mad at you, what to do when a deer wanders into camp but your sleeping bag has frozen shut, and how to avoid bird-dog flatulence.
Traveling the highways and byways of the Pacific Northwest, the delightful backcountry characters ofKerplunk!understand how a life of hunting and fishing -- and its inherent potential for misadventure -- can resonate with larger meaning. McManus's characters know exactly why it costs $500 to make a fly lure that retails for $2; why installing a boat trailer hookup can lead to divorce; and, most important, why you should always listen for the sound of your fishing line hitting the water -- because in life as it is in fishing, you don't know you're in the water until you hear the kerplunk!
These wry, curmudgeonly tales appeal to real outdoorsmen and the armchair variety alike. Often nostalgic, occasionally philosophical, and always funny, the stories inKerplunk!reaffirm Patrick F. McManus's reputation as an American classic.』

I would not bring this book to a tree stand or a deer blind. I have never found myself laughing so much while reading a book in my entire life. I began reading the stories to my wife when we were going to bed. There were evenings when we were laughing so hard together that we had tears streaming down our faces. For those few people who bought this book and didn't like it, perhaps you don't get the humor. Perhaps you don't pour your heart and soul into hunting and fishing like some of us crazy obsessed fools do. If you are passionate about hunting and fishing and can laugh at yourself (or at least at Bill Heavey) you will enjoy this book. I wish Heavey had enough stories that my wife and I could read them every night for the rest of our lives. But then he wouldn't have any time to get out into the woods. BUY THIS BOOK!』
(From LOL to Heart-Wrenching) 『Great collection of stories that I would recommend to any avid outdoorsman and as a good gift to the same. You will laugh out loud multiple times and still have a couple moments that pull on your heartstrings. A great mind and a dry wit are why folks turn the back of Field&Stream first.
As an example, if you like this snippet from "The Cuban Classic", you'll be happy:
"It's crazy-good video-game fishing, the flat-out most sustained largemouth action I've ever had. After about 10 minutes of this, Samuel stows his rod. 'No good here,' he says. I ignore him, cast again, and ask if he'd mind explaining just what the Sam Hill he's talking about. 'Place like this, you can wear your arm out. But you can't win a tournament.'
"What I ask, would it take to win?
"'Here? You need an average of 5 pounds each fish to be competitive. To win, it usually takes an average of 6 pounds, maybe a little more.' I look at him. He's smiling but he's not kidding.
"We need to invade this country."』
(Too Funny....) 『Very funny book for hunters and wives of hunters. If your husband is obsessed with his hunting you'll be glad to know that he is not the only man with this obsession. Easy reading, very funny.』
(great service) 『The book I ordered came in a very timely manner and was in perfect shape! I would recommend ordering from Amazon.com or Guardian Books anytime! Thanks for helping make my Christmas as perfect as possible.』
(Don't read this in bed...) 『Don't read this in bed unless you want to get kicked out for keeping your wife awake due to constantly laughing outloud uncontrollablly! I thoroughly enjoyed reading these stories, and highly recommend it for anyone who has ever been hunting or fishing.』 『
For nearly a decade, Bill Heavey, an outdoorsman marooned in suburbia, has written the“Sportsman’s Life” column on the back page ofField&Stream, where he does for hunting and fishing what David Feherty does for golf and Lewis Grizzard did for the South. His work is adored by readers—one proclaims him “the greatest sportswriter who has ever walked the planet”—and his peers have recognized his work with three prestigious National Magazine Award nominations. If You Didn’t Bring Jerky, What Did I Just Eat?is the first collection of Heavey’s hilarious observations on life as an enthusiastic (but often hapless) outdoorsman. Whether he’s hunting cougars in the southwest desert, scheming to make his five-year-old daughter fall in love with fishing, or chronicling his father’s slow decline through the lens of the numerous dogs he’s owned over seventy-five years, Heavey is a master at blending humor and pathos—and wide-ranging outdoor enthusiasms—into a poignant and potent stew. Funny, warmhearted, and supremely entertaining, this book is an uproarious addition to the literature of the outdoors. The paperback edition features two new pieces.

It wasn't so deeply detailed to be irrelevant, nor was it so wide-ranging and shallow to be superficial. It opened my mind to things I might not have ever thought about, like calling 911 before your attacker does, different holsters and why/when they work well, and some good reasons behind ammo choices. I especially liked the info on police department experiences and the choices they made regarding handguns and ammo. The stories on citizen experiences after they had to use or display their firearm serve as a sobering reminder that carrying a firearm also carries with it a big responsibility.
The book makes good use of pictures. The images illustrate the points well, plus there are a good number of product shots that show the differences between the holsters and firearms that the author talks about. However, I have to wonder why so many images (maybe 4 or 5) are so blurry and low-contrast. The book is so well-written otherwise that these stand out more.
I was looking for a good comprehensive jump-start on learning about concealed carry. This book did not disappoint.』
(Great for any gun owner) 『Takes you through different holsters to different clothes. Show you how to present the gun from each holster and the pros and cons to each carry type. Should be owned by any gun owner, even if you currently can't or don't carry. [...]

(Well Done) 『Well thought out and serious treatment of the subject. Much of it based on experience instructed by perceptive thought. I can't really speak to its final worth as I have yet to put the information gleaned to practical use. It stimulated my thinking...』

It breaks things down fairly easy to understand. Using this book plus watching videos on youtube really helped me understand the whole process of reloading. I would highly recommend this book for beginners』
(Agree with others, very good FIRST book for reloaders) 『I won't belabor the very good comments made by other reviewers who liked this book. I agree with them, and even agree with some of the mild criticisms. I post my review to reiterate the basic point: this book is an EXCELLENT first book to read if you want to get started reloading. DO buy it and enjoy the read, if you want to start reloading.
I would also recommend Lee's "Modern Reloading 2nd Edition" as the next book to read, after finishing Bill's great introductory tome. A bit "sales-y" with the Lee products, but Richard Lee has done some incredible things during his many decades (!!) of reloading, and you will benefit greatly from his quirky but enjoyable exposition, and anecdotal information to be found nowhere else (eg: where is the biggest lead exposure hazard to be found while reloading?). I especially enjoyed the story told of the time he loaded a load so hot, so fast, the bullet, traveling at over 4000 fps, melted and vaporized in flight, leaving a grey trail of lead vapor in its path! 』
(Worth the price) 『Unlike many books in print, this one is worth buying. Has a lot of practical info in it. Get a copy of this, and Lee's reloading manual, and between them and the internet you should have enough info to get started.』

Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (sometimes Grandpa really didn't know best) 『Maybe that's a little unfair to Gramps. But unless you're going to take him camping with you, this book with have little to no practical benefit on its own.
The authors readily admit that they recycled old material, mainly outdoor guides and scouting manuals. Fine. But it would have been better to simply reproduce those pages in their entirety. Instead, by scanning and/or retyping, typos have been introduced and perhaps even worse, the advice has lost much of its original flavor.
Either way, one has to suspend reality when thumbing through this compendium. The period advice would be hard to follow even if you wanted to. You mean you don't have a standard lard bucket handy? How about finding blanket pins at your local harness store? And because some of the information is outdated, don't be surprised when you are told to suck out snake venom!
Compared to the bulk of the book, which is devoted to camping, the angling (fishing) and shooting (hunting) sections are almost worthless. It's good for a laugh, though. Here are some words of wisdom for fisherman: "Never use Pork Rind--except in trolling," "For Carp Fishing--White maggots smeared with honey," "A Nest of Very Small Mice--Make excellent large trout or bass bait." The sporting rifle section has some classics as well: "Use Fresh Beef Tallow--As a rust preventative," "To Clean a Foul Gun--Pour in a little quicksilver (mercury!)," "Always Remove--Bones from tails of skinned animals." If you're feeling inadequate in terms of your frontier knowledge, don't worry! Just bone up with the two-and-a-half page appendix titled, "Cabins and How to Make Them."
Highly annoying is the high number of plugs within the text for the authors' other book. Shameless self-promotion!
One star for the entertainment value and another star for the book itself, which can be burned in case of an emergency.
Why settle for a pretender when you can have the real thing? Boy Scouts Handbook: The First Edition, 1911 (Dover Books on Americana)』
(Decent Information, but Too Outdated) 『This book provides some pretty good tips for surviving in the outdoors, but overall it's too outdated for most people's uses. The book is basically a compilation of information from several books published around 1900, so there's no new and improved information mentioned anywhere.
The book is divided into 3 sections: camping, fishing, and shooting. The camping section covers almost every aspect of camping, such as what to bring, how to prepare food, how to make shelter, how to survive certain climates, how to predict the weather, and how to treat sicknesses and injuries. Overall this chapter has fairly good info, but modern technology and discoveries are superior to many of the tips and methods presented here.
I didn't read the fishing and shooting sections because I have no uses for those. However I did skim through them and they seem quite similar to the camping chapter: the info is alright, but it's outdated and beaten by new technology and methods.
A problem that is present throughout the whole book is that advice is often not explained well enough; the author assumes that the reader already knows quite a bit. I'm guessing that this problems stems from the fact that the original audience (from 1900) had much different common knowledge than people do today. So, those readers would have been able to fully understand the advice, whereas most modern people probably won't.
Another problem with this book is the writing style. Most of the book is a direct copy of its 1900-era references, so it's written with words and expressions that haven't been used for at least 50 years. Also, there are lots of grammar and spelling mistakes.
I wouldn't recommend reading this book. I'm sure there are many better-written books with new information out there, so search around. The only people I could see this book being good for are people who really want to use 100 year-old methods, or older people who enjoy reading something old.』
(Interesting read) 『I enjoyed what this book was trying to do, but I'm uncertain if the information here is current and/or correct. Some of the first aid advice I question having just taken first aid courses, and gotten conflicting info. Still, for the $4 I paid for it, you can't go wrong.』
(Useless and Poorly Written) 『I ordered this book as I really thought it might have some fun information about woodsmanship or old ways of doing things. Not expecting practical items but at least material that was researched and had some credibility. Boy was I wrong. Not only is a lot of the data in this book WRONG, but some of it is downright dangerous. About the only use I will have for this book is to level out a wobbly table or maybe to start a fire using the paper. Save your money.
The title had hooked me. I'll save you the trouble. To "Catch a Pig", use a covered pit that is baited and be careful extracting the pig. There you have it, the basis for the entire title is one sentence.
Oh yeah, I would have given it "0" stars, but thats not an option.』
(Classic stuff for all outdoorsmen - and outdoorswomen.) 『Some people may say that the practical things in this book are out of date. I completely disagree. While the technology of camping and fishing has changed, the basic things haven't and that's where this book shines. One of my favorite books is Buzacott's "Sportsman's Encyclopedia" and there are plenty of selections in here from that book, along with bits and pieces from other old-timers' books I've never seen but wish I had! If you want all the latest on outdoors gadgetry, go someplace else. But if you want what really works and what's tried-and-true, then this is the book for you.』 『
Way back before man abandoned the woods for the cities—and traded his hunting rifle for a BlackBerry—he had to know how to do certain things to survive. He had to trap and build and grow things, using his calloused hands and valuable knowledge passed down through the generations. For most men today, these once-cherished skills are as dead as the dodo.
But take heart! Now guys can reconnect with those less-complicated times, rediscover how to embrace adventure, and appreciate the outdoor life. Denis Boyles, principal author ofA Man's Life, has culled a wealth of essential, nearly lost manly endeavors from U.S. government pamphlets, century-old publications, and ancient scouting manuals to help reeducate us in the fine macho arts of:
Tracking a bobcat
Splicing a rope
Rescuing someone from drowning
Sending a smoke signal
Building a log cabin
And much, much, much more—including, of course, how to catch a pig!
』 『You may be an Internet whiz and gas grill gourmet, but chances are you haven't a clue about starting a fire without matches, splicing a rope, catching a pig, building a log cabin, making a canoe, sending smoke signals, or quacking like a duck. Do you need these skills? If you're going camping for the first time, maybe yes. But even if you don't require camping rations for a party of four strong men (125 pounds worth, says Denis Boyles), this compendium, culled from turn-of-the-century publications and old scouting-type manuals, is a genuine treasury of forgotten lore.』

Then after meeting "Uncle Ted" one day in our local Wal-Mart, and we had rippin'good time in man-land. I was inspired to try again...I watched Spirit of the Wild a few thousand times. Something is wrong with him. Maybe neurotransmitters arent firing properly. Maybe damage to the amygdala.
I dont know.
But this man is disturbing. No disrespect intended. Just giving my honest opinion.
The recipes in this book are not on the "Emeril" level, if you get my drift. Not even close. It clearly wasnt written by someone who knows much about cooking.

Rinella impresses the reader quickly as one who is truly into bison, and has been for sometime, leading up to his obtaining a hunting permit in Alaska. So, this hunt interlaces throughout with various facts and history. Driving through Kansas (or even in the city), you now find yourself imagining what the landscape looked like as a prairie with millions of buffalo. It makes you open your eyes a bit. Very good read.』
(Great book for hunters, outdoorsman, and historians!) 『I hate to sound sexiest but this is a guy's book through and through. The author uses his fasination with the buffalo and a hunting trip to intertwine historical facts and stories about the great American Buffalo. A great book and fun to read.』
(Educates and entertains) 『Don't let the title mislead you. The book is about buffaloes alright, but there is much more to it. This is a good, good book. Entertaining, humorous, informative. I'm an editor and I love the writer's style, which is fresh and bright. This is not just 'a guy book,' it's not just a natural history book, it's not a 'tree hugger' book, it's a well-researched story by a writer who is clever and insightful. Highly recommended.』
(Amazing) 『For as history packed and totally factual as this book was, I could not put it down. A great hunting story with an applicable lesson in American History all in one book!』 『
A hunt for the American buffalo—an adventurous, fascinating examination of an animal that has haunted the American imagination.
In 2005, Steven Rinella won a lottery permit to hunt for a wild buffalo, or American bison, in the Alaskan wilderness. Despite the odds—there’s only a 2 percent chance of drawing the permit, and fewer than 20 percent of those hunters are successful—Rinella managed to kill a buffalo on a snow-covered mountainside and then raft the meat back to civilization while being trailed by grizzly bears and suffering from hypothermia. Throughout these adventures, Rinella found himself contemplating his own place among the 14,000 years’ worth of buffalo hunters in North America, as well as the buffalo’s place in the American experience. At the time of the Revolutionary War, North America was home to approximately 40 million buffalo, the largest herd of big mammals on the planet, but by the mid-1890s only a few hundred remained. Now that the buffalo is on the verge of a dramatic ecological recovery across the West, Americans are faced with the challenge of how, and if, we can dare to share our land with abeast that is the embodiment of the American wilderness.
American Buffalois a narrative tale of Rinella’s hunt. But beyond that, it is the story of the many ways in which the buffalo has shaped our national identity. Rinella takes us across the continent in search of the buffalo’s past, present, and future: to the Bering Land Bridge, where scientists search for buffalo bones amid artifacts of theNew World’s earliest human inhabitants; to buffalo jumps where Native Americans once ran buffalo over cliffs by the thousands; to the Detroit Carbon works, a “bone charcoal” plant that made fortunes in the late 1800s by turning millions of tons of buffalo bones into bone meal, black dye, andfine china; and even to an abattoir turned fashion mecca in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, where a depressed buffalo named Black Diamond met his fate after serving as the model for the American nickel.
Rinella’s erudition and exuberance, combined with his gift for storytelling, make him the perfect guide for a book that combines outdoor adventure with a quirky blend of facts and observations about history, biology, and the natural world. Both a captivating narrative and a book of environmentaland historical significance,American Buffalotells us as much about ourselves as Americans as it does about the creature who perhaps best of all embodies the American ethos.
』 『Amazon Best of the Month, December 2008: Before the 18th century, the American buffalo was the largest land mammal in North America, largely predator-free and roaming the continent in numbers estimated in excess of 40 million. In just over a century, widespread slaughter reduced the population to a few hundred head, and the American West lay beneath a till of bleached bones. When Steven Rinella stumbled over a buffalo skull in Yellowstone National Park, it sparked an obsessive search for the beast's past, from its migration across the Bering land bridge to its near extinction at the hands of western settlers.American Buffalo: In Search of a Lost Iconis his fascinating chronicle, beginning with a search for Black Diamond (the doomed model for the Buffalo Nickel) and including an exploration of "buffalo jumps" (where thousands were run over cliffs by Native American hunters), and tales of bone piles--harvested from the plains for a thriving fertilizer industry--stacked 10 feet high, 20 feet wide, and a half-mile long. Rinella's history is deftly interwoven with his own literal buffalo hunt in Alaska's Wrangell mountains, complete with grizzly bears, raging, ice-rimmed rivers, and bouts of hypothermia and frostbite. Written in a spare style appropriate to the rigors of the frozen wilderness,American Buffalois engrossing, informative, funny, and a welcome achievement of both natural history and outdoor adventure. --Jon Foro』
