(great for all runners)
『I was looking for a book written about running specially for women. I am just starting to pick up running and I wanted to be aware of anything as a woman I should look out for. This book reviews everything from training schedules, to food, to even what you should wear. I think as I grow in my training needs with book will also be a handy reference.』

(Great book with overall understanding of running tailored to women!)
『I have been running for just over a year and am a "newbie" in many ways. I have read a few other books on running but liked this one because it is tailored to female runners. With an overview of running, from nutrition to running injury free, I have found this book to be an asset.』

(Excellent Book)
『This book is a great read. It contains very specific information on how to begin running, how to choose the proper shoe, and how to identify/treat regular aches and pains and actual injuries. Overall health is a central theme in this book, and most of the advice is common sense.

There are running plans for beginner, intermediate, and marathon runners as well as strength training exercises to work the muscles that support all the running muscles.

Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. This has given me a different outlook on running, and I am far more motivated than ever - amazing as I have always hated running. I'm so excited about it even my hubby is getting curious. Highly recommended.』

(Very helpful)
『The book is very helpful and motivating for beginning runners. For those more experienced or advanced, there is also good information. Makes a casual runner feel capable of achieving their modest goals, while providing plenty for the marathoner as well. Good information on equipment, nutrition, injury prevention and general well being.』

(Excellent for New Runners)
『This book was so helpful, it covers everything without being overwhelming. I really think it's a great book for new runners!』
『"Listen to those millions of women runners. Listen to their quiet breaths as they talk in predawn pairs, before the rest of the family wakes-- the lessons and questions they share to the rhythm of steady footsteps. 'I never thought I could...' 'I feel so much stronger...' 'I'm ready to take on a new challenge...'

"Women develop a special sorority on the roads. This bond is an understanding based on acceptance, an appreciation of how far they have come, a knowing wink that says how much is yet to be gained. And so they talk and share and grow-- and run. Singly and in groups, swiftly and slowly, they run."--Dagny Scott

(love it)
『I am so excited about this second edition! I am not a really gifted runner, but I have lots of desire. Jack Daniels has taught me how to use my ability at its highest level. With his help I cut 15 minutes off my last marathon and now, after just having a baby I can't wait to start using it again.

I am especially excited about this new edition and the new training plans that are just for increasing your speed and fitness level, not just training for a race. I can't wait to get back in shape and there is no one I trust to help me more than Jack!』

(kindle edition is worthless)
『i have the kindle dx version. alot of charts have been left out that text refers to. print version is the way to go. kindle edition is worthless.』

(Kindle version missing Table 20.1, Program A training Plan)
『This is not a review as much as a warning for anyone thinking of buying the Kindle version instead of hard copy. I would avoid it.

In the 2005 Edition of the book, Program A is the marathon training program for runners who want a typical approach. Probably covers 80% of target readers. The Table describing the entire 24 week training plan is simply missing from the ebook. The Elite Plan, Table 20.2, is there. But Table 20.1, referenced several times in the text, is not. I have a feeling that it is extremely unlikely this is the only thing missing. As a general rule, when I find one major mistake right off the bat, there are many others close behind. But I'm cutting my losses with this one omission.

The Program A training schedule is the sole reason I purchased the Kindle edition, to supplement my older hard copy Edition 1 (where I followed Program C). So I give the Kindle Edition two stars. I would rate the hard copy book five stars but that's another story.』

(good for competative runners)
『This is a really good resource for competative runners, especially if they are self coached. It really covers what you need to know with respect to training. It is not a book for beginning runners, and it does not cover gear, injurys etc. in detail. Some caveats. Some of the most important statements in the book are not emphasized adequately. Daniels is a first rate coach with years of experience. He makes statements to the effect that different runners respond differently to different types of training. To an extent, it seems obvious, but the book presents training regimens and times, without adequately pointing out that these are suggestions, and you may have to work out what works best for you. I found that I responded better to slightly longer and slower long intervals than he recommends in his book. I tried his recommendations, and found I was more tired and sore, and most importantly my racing times went up or were flat. He clearly points out both that training has to be individualized, and that the bottom line (race time/place) is the bottom line. But I think he overemphasizes the science, such as it is, and underemphasizes his own knowlege of coaching. (I also strongly agree with his recommendations concerning younger runners.) Also, the training theory he discusses is not as clearly proven as you might think: we are still discovering new issues with respect to lactic acid, for example. To a certain extent, it doesn't matter: the training principles work, even if the underlying theory is less certain. Overall it is one of the best guides out there to give an overview of training for competative runners. Some modest changes in organization and emphasis would make it a five start book. Buy it, use it, read and re read it anyway.』

(BEST running book)
『This is the best running book out there. It has really helped improve my times, after a decade of running. The pace tables and workouts are great!』
『Get in the best shape of your running career with the scientifically based training in Daniels’ Running Formula. In the book that Runner’s World magazine called "the best training book," premier running coach Jack Daniels provides you with his proven VDOT formula to guide you through training at exactly the right intensity to become a faster, stronger runner.

Choose from the red, white, blue, and gold programs to get into shape, target a race program, or regain conditioning after a layoff or injury. Race competitively with programs for 800 meters, 1500 meters to 3000 meters, cross country races, 5K to 15K, and half-marathon up to the marathon. Each program incorporates the right mix of the five training intensities to help you build endurance, strength, and speed, and Daniels’ intensity point system makes it easy to track the time you spend at each level.

The formula can be customized to your current fitness level and the number of weeks you have available for training, and it provides the perfect solution for short training seasons. Get the results you’re seeking every time you lace up your shoes for a training run or race with the workouts and programs detailed in Daniels’ Running Formula.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review
(Disappointing and basic; Philosophy for beginners)
『He may be a great runner, but this book is ankle-deep philosophy and so basic in its lessons that it seems really designed for a 12-year-old. I would not suggest this book for any adult interested in life lessons or inspiration. It simply doesn't compare to the thoughtful books of people like Wayne Dyer and it's not a good book on running either. For a much better book on running and life, try Haruki Murakami's "What I talk about when I talk about running."』

(Runner's mind)
『A wonderful collection of short essays from a perspective of a long-time runner and editor of "Runner's World" on the impact that the sport has on our lives. Amby Burfoot covers a number of topics, ranging from attempting to answer the perennial question of "Why Run?" to the subjects of winning, losing, courage, goals, children, and a variety of other topics. It is an easy and refreshing read, guaranteed to give you something to ponder the next time you lace up your shoes. Having said that, be forewarned, this is not a book about the technique, training, or nutrition, so if you are searching for one of the above then you should keep looking.』

(Take it easy)
『Amby Burfoot's life has been running and this short book makes that clear. On one level, this is a running book but it isn't a how-to book like many other running books. It also isn't a running book that relates a lot of race stories like Bart Yasso's My Life on the Run or Benjamin Cheever's Strides. Instead, this is a philosophy book on its most basic level, and Amby's philosophy is to take it easy and enjoy running and life. It's an approach that he admits eludes many runners who are driven to succeed and improve. Amby has a achieved a great deal of success as a runner, especially in his younger days when he won the Boston Marathon, so it's clear that he hasn't always taken it easy himself. The only reason I give this book four stars is because Amby often comes across as discounting competition. For some of us master's runners who came to running at a later age, the chance to compete and drive ourselves is part of the appeal of running. Still, all in all, an enjoyable read for any runner.』

(An Easy Run)
『Amby Burfoot, winner of the Boston Marathon, has written a wonderful little book about running and life. He looks at his running life from a variety of angles, all from the perpective of years spent on his feet. This is great read that really captures how we live life through running. A beautiful book!!』

(Run and see it where it will take you)
『Books are easy reads for a number of reason, the primary ones are you are engrossed in the material or the writing is straightforward and to the point. This book is a combination of the two, I enjoyed the personal reflections of Mr. Burfoot (i.e. I enjoy biographies) and so the stories were quite enjoyable. I also liked the fact that it was written to be read by the everyman, straight with no chaser. Good read and a book I will pass on to others.』
『"As runners, we all go through many transitions-- transitions that closely mimic the larger changes we experience in a lifetime. First, we try to run faster. Then we try to run harder. Then we learn to accept ourselves and our limitations, and at last, we can appreciate the true joy and meaning of running."

As its opening pages reveal,The Runner's Guide to the Meaning of Lifeis not merely about running. It is about living-- to your fullest potential. Amby Burfoot, one of running's wisest voices, here presents 15 essential life lessons about passion, courage, materialism, failure, regeneration, and more, all learned from experience during more than 35 years of running. In this book, Amby discusses the essential traits of a runner-- traits that also are essential for all people wishing to reach their long-term goals. He discusses the writings, music, and quotes that have inspired him throughout his long career. Most important, he explains that winners are not those who cross the finish line first, but rather those who are able to discover more about themselves with every step.

The Runner's Guide to the Meaning of Lifeis one in a series of Daybreak books that provide life lessons and spiritual perspectives from the vantage point of different occupations and passions.

(triathlete textbook)
『This is a big textbook for triathlon. The author seems very knowledgeable and experienced and there is a lot of detail in the book. I found most of the book to be too technical for a recreational triathlete like myself.』

(Great book - very comprehensive)
『This is a great book for anyone wanting to get serious with triathlons or multisport events. Very comprehensive and references the latest scientific research and links this to practical training advice. Very fact based.』

(Great for the diehard triathlete, but...)
『I bought this book in preparation for my first olympic distance triathlon and found it a bit too advanced for my needs. I'd highly recommend it for anyone who is in top form for the olympic distance or doing ironmans, but it was so detailed I lost the forest for the trees in trying to make sure I was training effectively.

I was hoping for something a little simpler - "here's how you should think about your training and to know you're ready for the race (for me - that meant finishing without feeling like i was going to die.)"

Those nuggets are in there, but it's clearly directed for people who are competing at an elite level or is there to help people train for ironmans. To that end, the book appears to be superb - very well thought out, and well laid out as well.

Jim』

(The Bible)
『I am a newbie to the sport of triathlons. Have donee 7 marathons. This book is exactly what it says, "The Triahlet's Training Bible". Since I will be doning my first Triathlon, this book has to much info for the newbie. At some point, I know this will be great information for me.』

(Well worth it! Very valuable, but optimal value will require some work.)
『I could not put the book down when I first received it and started reading it. And I learned a lot in the first 50 or so pages. However, to really get the most out of this book, one will need to do some time-intensive testing and planning. Friel recommends laying out a whole year's training plan - which is awesome of course - and it is to be done step by step, however this has proven to be a really daunting task; one I have not been up for yet. You can still get lots of valuable info from the book by searching for what you want. But, the book really focuses around creating a year plan, looking at yourself and your weaknesses and strengths, doing some testing, and then making the plan. If you have the time and the will, I feel you will really absorb the purpose of this book.』
『This new edition of The Triathlete's Training Bible covers all of the specialized training needs of triathletes, including completely updated nutrition, recovery, and weight training information. The book also contains seasoned advice on the mental aspects of training. Author Joe Friel shows how to achieve greater fitness by examining personal strengths and weaknesses, and devotes individual chapters to planning, racing, rest, and recovery. Appendices include annual training plan worksheets and suggested swim, bike, run, and combined workouts.』

(Inspirational)
『This book inspires you to see the good in everyone and keep up the hope for some peace in the world. Nelson Mandela is a model for peace using patience, intellect and strategy. What a man. What a story. Powerful.』

(Inspired and Inspiring)
『Please read this book. It is not only the story of an inspired leader it inspires to make us makers of peace. You will be informed about Mandela, South Africa and rugby. You will cry all the way through the last third of the book so make sure to have alot of hankies nearby.

Mandela is a carismatic person who knows how to manipulate and inspire people to do better than their base instincts would have them do but he is also a cool calculator who knows how to capture the moment and turn it into a pivotal moment for the formation of his countrymen.

The author makes it clear in several passages that Mandela has a temper, that he does have deep resenments, he is not a bloodless saint but his conviction that revenge is not the way to forge a country and fix its problems and his self control make him the statesman and person he is. How easy it would have been for a man kept prisoner for so many years to take up the gun instead of the flag of national unity.

The proof of Mandela's theory has been watching South Africa play with a national team in the latest soccer championships held in South Africa. They almost won.

(An absolute must read)
『I just finished Playing the Enemy. It was among the best I have ever read and left me wanting more. Uplifting as well as educational. Buy it.』

(An Inspiring read)
『This is a book that truly inspires. I think the author wants to deliberately focus on the Rugby World Cup of 1995 and the rapprochement that it wrought between ordinary black and white South Africans. He chooses to completely disregard the Inkatha-ANC violence in the context of a power shift and focuses on how Mandela won the white South Africans over to the idea of a "rainbow nation". Reading these books makes you want to cry out for the same sensibility in other societies torn by violence and hatred.

I think this group of folks who formed the first government of post-apartheid South Africa were an absolutely exceptional group. Walter Sisulu, Bishop Tutu, Cyril Ramaphosa, Uncle Thabo et al are very good folks compared to the surrounding statesmen of Africa. Of course, Mandiba Mandela's role was the key to the thaw in relations between the various white and black communities.

Back to the book at hand. It is a truly inspiring work that seeks to look at various personalities at all levels of society in South Africa and explains their transformation in their own words.

Read this and go to sleep dreaming better dreams. Tomorrow will look rosier...』

(The Human Factor)
『John Carlin's work is a thrilling, spine-tingling effort. Most of the book's protagonists can't recall their meetings with Nelson Mandela in regards to 1995's Rugby World Cup without breaking into tears. Carlin's genius is to make you see why this is the natural reaction. Here's a man who, as one player aptly puts it "spent 27 years in prison and came out with love and friendship. All that washed over me, that huge realization, and the tears just rolled down my face."

Though Mandela is as close as there is to a god walking this earth, it's his one-on-one people skills that take the day. His will is to win them over, one person at a time. That's why Clint Eastwood has named his upcoming film of this book "The Human Factor" (Morgan Freeman as Mandela, Matt Damon as Springbok captain Francois Pienaar).』

A thrilling, inspiring account of one of the greatest charm offensives in history—Nelson Mandela’s decade-long campaign to unite his country, beginning in his jail cell and ending with a rugby tournament

In 1985, Nelson Mandela, then in prison for twenty-three years, set about winning over the fiercest proponents of apartheid, from his jailers to the head of South Africa’s military. First he earned his freedom and then he won the presidency in the nation’s first free election in 1994. But he knew that South Africa was still dangerously divided by almost fifty years of apartheid. If he couldn’t unite his country in a visceral, emotional way—and fast—it would collapse into chaos. He would need all the charisma and strategic acumen he had honed during half a century of activism, and he’d need a cause all South Africans could share. Mandela picked one of the more farfetched causes imaginable—the national rugby team, the Springboks, who would host the sport’s World Cup in 1995.

Against the giants of the sport, the Springboks’ chances of victory were remote. But their chances of capturing the hearts of most South Africans seemed remoter still, as they had long been the embodiment of white supremacist rule. During apartheid, the all-white Springboks and their fans had belted out racist fight songs, and blacks would come to Springbok matches to cheer for whatever team was playing against them. Yet Mandela believed that the Springboks could embody—and engage—the new South Africa. And the Springboks themselves embraced the scheme. Soon South African TV would carry images of the team singing “Nkosi Sikelele Afrika,” the longtime anthem of black resistance to apartheid.

As their surprising string of victories lengthened, their home-field advantage grew exponentially. South Africans of every color and political stripe found themselves falling for the team. When the Springboks took to the field for the championship match against New Zealand’s heavily favored squad, Mandela sat in his presidential box wearing a Springbok jersey while sixty-two-thousand fans, mostly white, chanted “Nelson! Nelson!” Millions more gathered around their TV sets, whether in dusty black townships or leafy white suburbs, to urge their team toward victory. The Springboks won a nail-biter that day, defying the oddsmakers and capping Mandela’s miraculous ten-year-long effort to bring forty-three million South Africans together in an enduring bond.

John Carlin, a former South Africa bureau chief for the LondonIndependent, offers a singular portrait of the greatest statesman of our time in action, blending the volatile cocktail of race, sport, and politics to intoxicating effect. He draws on extensive interviews with Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and dozens of other South Africans caught up in Mandela’s momentous campaign, and the Springboks’ unlikely triumph. As he makes stirringly clear, their championship transcended the mere thrill of victory to erase ancient hatreds and make a nation whole.』

(Excellent Bookfor the Serious Runner Regardless of Age or Ability)
『Although a long time runner, I thoroughly enjoyed Brad Hudson's book that in a highly readable and efficient fashion relates his training programs for virtually all runners. His theory of adaptive running makes great sense and he constantly adjusts for abilities, current performance levels and common sense such as always pencil in workouts to adjust for how the runner feels today. His book focuses on balancing the human body with a combination of muscle training, aerobic and anaerobic combined with self assessment leading to an individualized plan. What I particularly like about this book is that it simply does not lead you into how to run a marathon but to a verity of race distances from 5K forward. He proves a variety of workout plans based on abilities and age at various distances. And what is somewhat rare, he has an excellent program for masters runners at different distances and, as he conveys that rest is needed, he builds in more rest time for masters runners in the form of cross training and core body workouts. His workouts are truly building block encouraging the athlete not to try to set PRs in practice or increase the load too soon but shy from injury and then work toward specific peak race workouts. He doesn't spend a lot of time on masters but what he says makes a lot of sense about different needs and recovery. For instance, for older and injury prone runners, he encourages more hill work over track workouts and hill work is a major part of all his training. I particularly like the 8 second sprints uphill that improve neuromuscular fitness. I am in the first 1/3 of the masters program, adding one extra day of running as opposed to 3 since 1 is a long social run, and I like the variety and a long range peak plan. Also, has great words of wisdom such as when cutting back for a recovery period, keep some intense workouts on the agenda since getting away from it too much makes a longer climb to get back in shape and increases the potential for injury. Great side bar articles on athletes he has coached with pictures. Dathan Ritzenhein just broke the American 5K record with a 12:55 and he was the 4th non-African to break 13:00. He currently is coached by Alberto Salazar for the past 3 months but Salazar credited Hudson for bringing Ritzenhien to such great shape free of the nagging injuries Ritz has had historically. This is a great book for all and particularly for HS coaches with four ranges of workouts based on class year/ability.』

(For anyone looking to an alternate to periodization)
『This is an excellent book for any runner who wants to find a training plan or philosophy that does not follow the traditional pyramid approach. This book does not offer scientific rationale for his approach, but instead seems to be based on common sense and reason. Even if you do not wish to follow his training plans, Hudson does provide some very good advice and diagnostic tools to use when assessing your current and past performances.』

(Average book)
『I bought this book in preparation for my 50th marathon. I was looking for information that would improve my training in comparison with my previous 49 marathons. This book really did not provide the guidance that I was looking for. In my opinion Advanced Marathoning by Pete Pfitzinger and Scott Douglas gives more, better guidance which helped me to break 3 hours.』

(Run Faster)
『Brad Hudson is an experienced coach, working mostly with elite athletes and competitive runners as far as I can tell. I am neither, but like all runners am interested in running faster. The solid basis he provides for his schedules I found very helpful, but the actual schedules were of only limited value to me.

For me, the best thing about the book is his concept of adaptive running schedules. In summary, the idea is to use the schedule as an outline of what you plan to do, but adapt it to your own experience as you work with it. This means adapting the schedule to the way your body responds each week, each day, even each run if need be. The book helped me clarify my own approach to running schedules, which I term "flexibility". "Adaptive" is a more appropriate terminology than "flexible", since it implies adapting the schedule to fit your body's needs, rather than just changing it randomly.

I recommend this book to competitive runners and elite athletes. For plodders like me, it has value in understanding more of why we are plodders and how we can choose to change this. By adapting his aggressive schedules to our own needs we can maximize the benefits of our training.』

(Some good information.)
『This book is good if you are a fairly serious runner. I am a novice runner who wants faster times at the half marathon and 10K. While this book does provide some insights, the anecdotes were tiresome and this book really did not provide the guidance that I was looking for. The FIRST program -- "Run Less/Run Faster" is a more beneficial book to me.』

Do you want to run faster? Are you trying to peak for a particular race? Would you like to find your true running potential? Brad Hudson, former Olympic Trials marathoner and current coach to Olympians like Dathan Ritzenhein, will show you the way in this practical, reader-friendly guide. (the best in the field, by far, the best...!!)
『This is a serious book. Probably the best book about running there is... period. It is no just a training Bible (with running schedules that vary in weekly mileage), it also educates you... it has a great deal of information regarding the science, the reasons, the why's and the how's of the great running universe.
If you need to get better, this is the book for you; if you need to improve your times dramatically, this book will tell you how to do it (and if you have the body and determination and discipline, this book will get you there). Keep your running goals realistic... but give this book a chance, chances are you'll be surprised.』

(Paul Pfitzinger's "Advanced Marathoning")
『This book is exactly what the title says - for "Advanced Marathoning". While the other books tell you how to complete a marathon, this book tells you everything you need to know on how to race a marathon and to help you get a PR in your next marathon. Since I have read and started following the advanced schedules in this book, fine tuning my training as I went along, I have had several PR's. Over the course of one year and three marathons, my PR has jumped thirteen minutes. It has gone from a 3:13 a year ago to a 3:00 and I honestly hope to run a sub three in my next marathon. This is the best book, I have ever read about marathon training and would highly recommend that anyone who is serious about the marathon, buy it!』

(As advertised)
『The book Advanced Marathoning includes all of the information you would expect in a book with that title. The authors do a great job of taking scientific information and pairing it with real-world application. There are also featured "elite" marathoner sections of the book with information about their successes and failures. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about improving not only their performance in marathons, but also their understanding of what actually improves their perfomance.』

(One of the best books on preparation for running marathon)
『This book really did provide me the guidance that I was looking for. Following the guidance from this book I broke 3 hours in my 49th marathon for the first time being 46 years old. Thank you.』

(The secret to getting more from... well, not less really.)
『I love this book. Having floundered around for years trying to finally be able to run a sub-3 marathon, this book enabled me to focus my training, understand exactly what I was doing and, in the end, got me over the finish-line in 2.57.

In fact, the training programme (18 week, 60 miles or less per week) got me into such good shape, I ran a 100km only 21 days after the marathon and finished in less than ten hours.』

『Want to run a faster marathon? Commitment and hard work are essential but you also need to train smarter to run faster.Advanced Marathoningcontains all the information you'll need to run faster, peak for multiple marathons without injury, and meet your marathon goal--whether it's running a personal best, qualifying for the Boston Marathon or winning your age division.

Extensive, day-to-day training schedules are targeted to your weekly mileage and length of training program (12, 18, or 24 weeks). These training schedules will have you racing at peak speed, whether you're targeting one race or several during the season.

The more you know about why and how the plan works, the more motivated you'll be to stick with the workouts. You'll also be better able to assess your progress as you get closer to the big race. You'll learn the scientific principles behind what makes you a faster marathoner and which workouts you need to improve.

Many factors can affect your marathon success.Advanced Marathoninggives you information on everything critical to your success, including

  • which types of training are most important for success and which are a waste of time,
  • eating and drinking for top performance in training and racing,
  • which types of nonrunning training have the biggest impact on your marathon times,
  • finding the time and energy to fit training into real life,
  • tracking your progress, and
  • planning and implementing your race-day strategy.

Author Pete Pfitzinger was the top American finisher in the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Marathons. He won the 1984 Olympic Trials by outkicking former world record holder Alberto Salazar. Pfitzinger, now an exercise physiologist, won the San Francisco Marathon twice and finished third in the 1987 New York City Marathon. Co-author Scott Douglas is a well-known writer on running, a former editor ofRunning Times, and a competitive runner. The duo, co-authors ofRoad Racing for Serious Runners(Human Kinetics, 1999), have experience, credibility, and an ability to present scientific information in a readable manner.

Successful marathon running requires thorough, intelligent preparation.Advanced Marathoningis the only book you'll need to move beyond the basics and meet your goals--training smarter to run faster.』

(Easily Understood)
『When I first decided to run a marathon, I was shocked to find how many guiding tools there were. Some were complicated me due to being a beginner. This was an easy read, week by week guide... which I loved. I have never had a baby, but I compare it to "Something to Expect When Expecting" for runners. :)』

(100% Effective)
『I used this book, which I now simply refer to as THE GUIDE to run my first marathon. The 16 weeks of training are fun and motivating. The rest of the book helps you keep it real to stay focused and committed. To my great surprise, I had a lot of FUN in my marathon. This book is a very inexpensive way to generate genuine and complete feelings of accomplishment and self satisfaction for yourself.』

(great book)
『this book get you in the zone to accomplish things so quickly and easily that you find the world becoming much more quenchable than you thought it could be for you. It makes me go from "I think I can" to "I know I can".』

(This book works. Period.)
『I used this book to train for the 2009 Chicago Marathon. it tells you that you should get yourself to be able to at least jog for about 30 minutes before starting the 16 week program. I did that, and then started about 20 weeks before the marathon just in case I had to rest an injury or something. The book gives you a lot of information on hydration, nutrition, stretching, what to wear, and a ton of motivational stories from previous participants in the program.

I did the runs as scheduled and read the book along the way. I did tweak a hamstring about halfway through and had to rest for 2 weeks, so I was glad I started early. I finished the Chicago Marathon, and that was my one and only goal. This book works. If you are trying to run a fast marathon or are a more serious runner, get something else. This is designed for new runners, and it works as advertised. I went from barely being able to run a mile in May 2009 to finishing the Chicago Marathon on October 11, 2009. Again, it works if you believe in what they are saying.

The only con would be that it is hard to find specific info in the book because they give you a little bit in each chapter, so a more detailed table of contents or an index would be great. But I feel like that forced me to actually read the whole book and get a better understanding for the challenges ahead, so maybe it was for the best.

Thank you for writing this great book!』

(Awesome and completely solid advice)
『This book has what you need to know about physically running (nutrition, gear, durations and distances, injury prevention, etc) but it ALSO has something super important that so many others books don't have: weekly guidance on your thoughts and goals, and inspiration. It gives you positivity and drive, and techniques to use it. Great book! I'm running my first marathon in 2 days and am totally prepared, totally at peace.』
『Athlete. Runner. Marathoner. Are these words you wouldn't exactly use to describe yourself? Do you consider yourself too old or too out of shape to run a marathon? But somewhere deep inside have you always admired the people who could reach down and come up with the mental and physical strength to complete such a daunting and rewarding accomplishment? It doesn't have to be somebody else crossing the finish line. You can be a marathoner. The Non-Runner's Marathon Traineris based on the highly successful marathon class offered by the University of Northern Iowa, which was featured in aRunner's Worldarticle titled "Marathoning 101." The class has been offered five times over 10 years, and all but one student finished the marathon. That is approximately 200 students -- all first time marathoners and many with absolutely no running background. This book follows the same 16-week, four-day-a-week workout plan. What makes the success rate of this program so much higher than any other? The special emphasis on the psychological aspects of endurance activities. You don't have to love to run -- you don't even have to like it -- but you have to realize that you are capable of more than you have ever thought possible. One participant in the program explained it like this: "I'm doing this for me -- not for others or the time clock. I just feel better when I run, plus it helps me to cope with things in general. The skills we've learned in this class don't apply just to marathoning -- they apply to life! Just like you never know what the next step in a marathon will bring, so too, you never know what will happen next in life. But if you don't keep going, you're never going to find out. By staying relaxed, centered, and positive you handle just about anything that comes your way." This is marathon running for real people, people with jobs and families and obligations outside of running. The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainerhas proven successful for men and women of all ages. Now let it work for you.』

(New marathoner)
『I highly recommend the Run Less, Run Faster book and training program. I ran my first marathon last weekend at the Richmond Marathon in 3:43 time. I am not an avid runner and didn't have much time to put into the training due to job and a new baby in the house, however, a neighbor recommended this book and I followed the key 3 runs per week (track, tempo and long runs) fairly strickly. I only missing 1 long run in the 16 week program. I also didn't have time or energy to complete the cross-training days and ended up achieving my stretch goal time on race day anyways. I felt perfectly prepared by the book's advice that covers everything from nutrition, stretching, flexibility, detailed training programs for 5K, 10K, half and full marathons that fit your level of running, based on your prior shorter runs, training and race tips, pace charts, etc. I just stuck to the book and it delivered a great result for me. Thank you Bill and Scott for a wonderful contribution that allowed even a novice newby achieved a life milestone. The marathon is now checked off my bucket list!』

(Changed my (running) life)
『I'll admit, the idea that you could successfully prepare for a marathon with only three running days a week seemed unlikely, and doubly so the notion that your times could improve. But after a few years of nagging injuries, it seemed worth a shot.

Does it work? A half marathon personal record and near marathon PR, at age 46 and after 11 previous marathons, convinced me that the answer is a big YES! Here's my take on the pros and cons of the FIRST approach:

Pros

- Extremely clear, specific training plans for distances from 5K to marathon. After reading the book, you'll have everything you need to hit to road well prepared.

- Empirically validated. In addition to being runners, the authors are researchers who have conducted studies demonstrating the efficacy of the approach. So, you can enter the program knowing it's been rigorously tested and proved. Of course, the reviews below say the same thing.

- For me at least, helped avoid the calf/hip injuries that plagued me over the last two years.

- Included more holistic discussions of nutrition, strength training, and stretching which are so important to a running program.

Cons

- Something like a third of the book is runner testimonials. While I personally found them interesting and useful, they may turn some off.

- There wasn't much information on "tapering," the pre-race rest period for marathons. I guess this was built in the schedules, but it would have helped me to have a fuller discussion.

Other observations

- This is NOT an easy program! The "price" of running only three days is harder workouts. I have never run as intense weekly workouts. However, the rest/cross training made them doable.

- If you're a triathlete, the program would be great in that you could still maintain your swimming/cycling training on the off days.

- There is some additional helpful information on their web site. Just Google "Furman FIRST."

Best of luck in your running, and I hope you find the program as helpful as I did!

(Used in for my First Marathon)
『I followed the First Marathon training plan included in this book.
I ran my first Marathon, NYC, in 3:37. program allowed me to cross train, which is important to me as I had an ACL reconstruction surgery 12 months before I started training.
If you combine this book with a good nutrition guide, you can certainly achieve your goals.』

(This program improved my PR by 20 minutes!)
『I am a believer. The book and program are great for a busy schedule. It is certainly tough to juggle family, work, a masters degree program and marathon training. I just wish I had dedicated even more time to the cross and strength training.

I just ran my second Marine Corps Marathon. I improved from a 3:30:31 last year to a 3:09:34 this year. I am sure this book and the FIRST program can get me below a 3:05 or 3:00.』

(Never expected to qualify for Boston, BUT...)
『...it happened! I followed this book to the letter and am so glad I did! This was my third marathon, and all three have been on the same course, same time of year. I shattered my time from last year by 50 minutes and set a new PR 26 minutes faster than my old PR - when I ran my first marathon 10 years ago.
What I loved about this book is the science and pragmatic approach to applying the science; there was no guess work. Follow the 3+2 workout method (I did 3+3, adding 1 weekly yoga session from the P90X collection), do the easy days easy and the hard days hard - and REST. There's no question that you log fewer miles, but all are high quality and the results speak for themselves!』

Finally, runners at all levels can improve their race times while training less, with the revolutionary Furman Institute of Running and Scientific Training (FIRST) program.

Hailed by the Wall Street Journal and featured twice in six months in cover stories in Runner’s World magazine, FIRST’s unique training philosophy makes running easier and more accessible, limits overtraining and burnout, and substantially cuts the risk of injury, while producing faster race times.

The key feature is the "3 plus 2" program, which each week consists of:

-3 quality runs, including track repeats, the tempo run, and the long run, which are designed to work together to improve endurance, lactate-threshold running pace, and leg speed

-2 aerobic cross-training workouts, such as swimming, rowing, or pedaling a stationary bike, which are designed to improve endurance while helping to avoid burnout

With detailed training plans for 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon, plus tips for goal-setting, rest, recovery, injury rehab and prevention, strength training, and nutrition, this program will change the way runners think about and train for competitive races.

Amby Burfoot, Runner’s World executive editor and Boston Marathon winner, calls the FIRST training program "the most detailed, well-organized, and scientific training program for runners that I have ever seen."

『I wanted to know how I could become a faster runner. This book gave me some new insights on running that I had never had, nor known. I was well satisfied with the book.』

(A Critical Review of ChiRunning by a barefoot runner)
『I have been a barefoot runner since 2005, at which time I re-learned how to correctly run using my awareness and the teachings of numerous sources. I have read Danny Dryer's ChiRunning book and watched his ChiRunning DVD. I have also studied The Pose Running Technique on DVD and the workbook. In addition, I have experience practicing Qi Gong (Chi Kung), meditation, and yoga. I have also studied anatomy, posture, The Alexander Technique, and Rolfing Structural Integration. My partner is also a Chinese Medicine professional and Acupuncturist. So basically, I know a thing or two in this field...

In light of the acclaim that Danny Dryer is receiving for his ChiRunning technique, there are some critical errors and marketing misperceptions that I feel should be addressed. I base these insights on my own personal experience and my extensive research into natural running techniques and chi energy.

1. This book does not at all use the chi (qi) energy for running. Dryer teaches a method of using gravity to encourage the body to move through space. After reading and watching Dryer's published material, it is clear to me that he uses the term "chi" as a marketing strategy. All things eastern - yoga, tai chi, etc - are hot selling points these days. Yes, Dryer states that he has practiced Qi Gong under a teacher. However, nowhere in the DVD or book does he teach about the movement of chi the body, its pathways or its functions. Dryer should have title his technique "Gravity Running" instead.

2. Dryer combines a commonly misunderstood Pilates technique (tightening the core), claming it to be engaging the "hara" or "dan tien / tan tien". While the dan tien is the chi energy center below the navel, never are core muscles used when working with this center. Tightening any muscles will take a person's awareness away from the energy and into the muscular contraction sensation. Contracting muscles may create heat which is often believed to be chi by many beginners, however heat and chi are very different.

In the original Pilates technique, as taught by Joseph Pilates, only the largest, deepest muscles of the core are "engaged" not tightened. This is more akin to placing the awareness in the core while using only the softest tension. Most people misunderstand Pilates and tighten the abdominal muscles which then causes improper posture. Watching the ChiRunning DVD and observing Danny Dryer's posture, it is clear that his posture is far from ideal. Improper core tension and running technique could possibly be the cause of this, however other causes could also exist.

3. Dryer teaches to tighten the core muscle to tilt the pelvis. This lengthens the lower back, thus straightening the spine and removing the natural curve. By straightening the natural curve, the natural spring in the spine is removed leading to possible spine injury. Watching the DVD clearly shows the postural flaw caused by this unnatural movement. I am very suprised to see the noticably poor posture that Dryer and his students showed in this instructional video.

Also, by tightening the core muscles, excess tension is created in the body that will interfere with the body's natural movement. By creating tension in the core, the entire body is adversely affected because the core is the body's center of gravity and the psoas muscles in the deep core extend into the legs and upper back and ribs. Tension in the core will also restrict the rig cage's ability to expand sufficiently to allow proper oxygen in the lungs.

4. Landing on the middle of the foot works against the anatomy of the foot. The arch of the foot acts like a rubber band that allows the foot to spring forward when running on the ball and toes. Running with the middle of the foot first causes the ball and head to hit at the same time, causes jarring sensations in the foot, ankle, and leg.

As seen in the photos in the book and in the DVD video, Dryer wears modern full cushion running shoes that elevate the heal. Ask any expert in anatomy and/or Olympic-level running will teach, these shoes are injuries waiting to happen. A person can only get an accurate anatomical running experience by learning to run barefoot. Barefoot running quickly shows us how to correctly run. We can then return to running in shoes in a safer, more natural and more energy efficient way.

5. Danny Dryer encourages the runner to tilt the body forward, taking the work off of the muscles and letting gravity act as a source of propulsion. Yes, this does work. However this style of running does not make effective use of the muscles and creates a very awkward experience that does not feel natural. Observe the running style of the world's greatest Olympic athletes and you will see all long distance runners stand erect while landing on the ball and toes of the feet.

--

If you have read this far into my review, you may be left looking for a solution. My best recommendation is to read the book Running Fast and Injury Free by Gordon Pirie. Pirie has held many world records and Olympic medals. He is one of few runners who, in my opinion, has perfected the art of running. His principles are based upon a lifetime of learning from top Olympic runners and beating nearly all of them or their records. Since age 14, Pirie ran with Olympic record holders. In addition, Dr. Nicholas Romanov's Pose Method of Running contains value insights into the physiology of running.

Above all else, since most of us grew up in shoes, we must re-teach ourselves to walk and run as the body's design intends. We must learn to move barefoot. Even if we choose to run every race in shoes, learning to run while barefoot is a necessary part of the process. So find a soft stretch of dirt, sand, grass, sidewalk or road and get started. Skip 99.9% of the theory and get back to the reality of running. Use your mind to observe your body and make corrections as you go. And above all else - have fun!』

(Chi Running delivers)
『This book was recommended to me by a trainer at a health club who runs marathons. I was skeptical at first, but I started to
incorporate techniques described in the book into my running routine. I find that it has been helpful. I don't experience as
much nagging pain as I used to. I think as I learn more about this approach, my running will improve. I recommend this book for
avid runners.』

(Not what I was hoping for)
『This video is fine if you are looking for help with form and stretching exercises. I was hoping for more about the "chi" of running, and "chi" in general. I love the bits I have read about Chi Running, but I wish this was a video of the material in the book. Then maybe I wouldn't feel guilty when I see the book on my shelf (mostly) unread. I'm hoping there will be an audio version in the future.』

(Not so interesting!)
『I enjoyed the book for motivational purposes more than for any interesting revelation about running. I would not recommend it, it bored me at times.』
『Join the hundreds of thousands of people who are now running without injury or pain using the ChiRunning method. This new edition is fully updated with fresh insights and innovative training techniques from one of the sport's leading voices. Danny Dreyer teaches us how to heal and prevent injuries and also to run faster, farther, and with much less effort at any age or ability.

With more than 150,000 copies in print, this groundbreaking program makes running safe and fun for beginning and seasoned runners, while also giving competitive runners the edge they seek. ChiRunning employs the deep power reserves in the core muscles, an approach found in disciplines such as yoga, Pilates, and in this case T'ai Chi.
