(Laird Hamilton's book.) 『Well written with real world applications. He is one of the most accomplished athletes of today. He was able to put into words his thoughts and ideas that has brought him success in life. He is living it to the fullest and many lessons can be taken from the book.』
(two thumbs up!!!!) 『is an amazing book to read,I am a lifeguard in south beach and I practice many of the exercises from laird hamilton.』
(A good book to read.) 『I got this book on the recommendation of a coworker and am glad I did. I do not aspire to be a professional athlete but rather to achieve a life time of successful fitness. Laird provides you with some basic prinicpals on eating, fitness and strengthening your mind. I enjoyed his Warrior attitude and the way he uses his environment, whatever it may be, to challenge himself mentally and physically. I plan on keeping this book and hope to have both of my sons, who are still in grade school, read it some day. Live life to the very fullest is one of the ideas of this book.』
(Much Much more interesting than I expected) 『It is hard to look at a guy like Laird Hamilton and not think he was lucky. However, luck doesn't have much to do with his success. He is a driven man and as he points out anyone who has the desire to be the best they can can be if they are willing to pay whatever price it takes. This book was very interesting in that his personal creeds of behavior are unusual for a top athlete. He really isn't driven by the need for power or control over other people, just himself. He shares. In this book I found some of the best exercise and food advice I have seen from any other athlete in any sport. Maybe all the food and exercises are not right for everyone but it is a good reference as a place to start. I have been surfing or around surfing all my adult life and I find it really refreshing to find people in the sport who aren't after the party scene who are also at the top of the sport. Surf movies these days who show a bunch of talented young surfers off in other countries being butt heads are a dime a dozen. These days it becomes refreshing to read someone who finds true meaning in a connection with themselves and nature. I recommend this book to any athlete in any sport who wants to excel for the joy of being a better person.』 『
Laird Hamilton has been hailed as the world's greatest big-wave surfer. His first book,Force of Nature, allows readers a rare glimpse inside the unique philosophy that has created his circumstances, and not the other way around. After all, this is a man whose biological father abandoned him shortly after he was born; whose first job was working on a pig far; who dropped out of school in eleventh grade. And then the career decision: surfer. Though earning enough to pay the rent as any kind of surfer is next to impossible, Hamilton has ended up in the place we all desire to be: doing exactly what he loves, becoming the world's best in the process, making a great living, being surrounded by nature and family, radiating peak health and fitness, and succeeding by any definition of the word.
How did he get there? And more importantly, how can the rest of us join him?
Force of Natureis a detailed map to that destination, with Laird Hamilton as the reader's guide. It's not about chasing trophies or accolades or cash. It's about quality over quantitysoul and being true to your physical, mental, and spiritual roots. Not only is it possible to thrive in the modern world without adopting its harmful habits, it's essential. And not only has Hamilton mastered this balance, he makes a compelling and articulate case that anyone who wants to can do the same.
This book is a deeply authoritative and cutting-edge guide to peak fitness in mind, body, sould, and surfing. It comes directly from the source and his inner circle, which includes those at the vanguard of sports, training, nutrition, and more. Former pro volleyball player Gabrielle Reece; surf legend Dave Kalama; fitness gurus Paul Chek, T.R. Goodman, and Don Wildman; and Food Network star Giada De Laurentiis all contribute their knowledge. Readers will get an all-access pass into an elite world filled with definitive and provocative ideas.
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (shadow divers) 『A gripping story well written for those without knowledge of diving physiology and techniques. I would especially recommend it for the trained diver.』
(Fabulous... couldn't put it down) 『I'm a diver, but even if I wasn't I would find this book hard to put down. It's absolutely absorbing for anyone who is interested in history and a great yarn about fearless men who won't give up on a dream or their ideals. Highly recommended!』
(A must read) 『Great story I just sucked me in and I couldn't put it down. I found it to be a fast read. I read it in a few days. A friend lent me the book to read she thought I would like it. I loved it and had to have a copy for my self.』
(Great Diving Adventure) 『Anyone who loves a story with mystery and adventure will really enjoy this book! I received it on a Friday and hardly put it down over the whole weekend!』
(Great story, Great book) 『I didn't realise when I bought this book, it would be so hard to put down. Probably the fastest I've ever read a book. What a amazing story.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Read it, watch a video and practice) 『It works. It must be complemented watching videos (type the title of the book on youtube). I use also a snorkel that works perfectly with this technique.』
(This book taught me to swim for a triathlon) 『I always loved the water, but I'd never been taught to swim freestyle and I wanted to compete in a triathlon. I tried going to some Masters swim classes but after months of trying I was still exhausted after only 100 meters, and the 1/2 mile ocean swim looked increasingly impossible. This book, in combination with video clips on the Total Immersion website, taught me how to swim comfortably, with fewer strokes and less exertion than some of the tri-fanatics I trained with. Now I easily swim long distances for fun, breathing comfortably on both sides - and believe me, it never would have happened without this book! I love this book and find myself recommending it frequently to people who ask me for advice at the pool.』
(Essential Swimming Resource) 『This book is an essential for any coach wanting to assist individuals with open water swimming. Individuals will benefit greatly from the use of this book but will find greater value when complimented by an experienced coach. The video is also of real value』
(This book has revolutionized my swimming!) 『I am not a triathlete, I do not swim competitively although I used to in High School. But I love being in the water. (My real background is dancing.) I am about 30 lbs overweight and have been steadily and slowly shedding pounds through swimming. When I was on a swim team, I became the fastest sprinter in a short time and after training only 2 months with the slowest swimmers on the team. 20 years later I have begun to use the drills and concepts in this book and now I am even faster than ever with fewer strokes.
This is not as important to me as how I feel in the water, how I relate to it and how I feel after my TI practice. As a sprinter who has always shirked long distance training regimes, I can now swim nonstop for much longer periods than I ever had before. I used to jump in the water and just swim without paying any attention to how I moved. Now swimming is more like a meditation practice or a dance class where the energy of mindfulness is the source of movement (and stillness), not willpower or habit. I also love leaving the kickboards, pullboys, paddles etc. out of my swimming and out to rot in the sun - I never liked them to begin with! I give a a close to excellent rating for this book because it has rocked my world and I have fallen in love with water (again) in a way I didn't know was possible. I have been telling my friends that this is like doing a yoga practice in water.
I know that the author wants to reach a wide audience. My only criticism of the book is that it is oriented a little too much towards triathletes and males at that, and not enough towards other types of folks who love to be physical - like dancers. I am guessing much of what Terry Laughlin has come up against in the form of resistance to this totally new 'outside the box' approach to swimming justifies the many pages spent trying to convince nay sayers that the old way is inferior. I do not need to be convinced.
This book is totally awesome and TI will be known through history as the turning point in the evolution of all swimmer's' relationship to water.』
(Already Swimming Better) 『Excellent book for frustrated swimmers trying to figure out why they aren't swimming faster. "Total Immersion" gives you a step by step blue print on how to become a better, faster, more efficient swimmer. In the first part of the book, Terry Laughlin builds his case on why you should try his methods. Once he makes you a believer, he gives you step by step building blocks on how to get there. My swimming has already improved tremendously and I haven't even gotten through all of the drills yet.』 『

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Eye of the Needle) 『Eye of the Needle is a facinating spy story set in WWII. A must read for fans of Ken Follett's other works. I found this book after finishing World Without End and Pillar's of the Earth...also highly recommended. Follett is a master storyteller!』
(books) 『can't remember buying, have not read yet, not sure where it is! Hope I still have it!』
(Hard to put down) 『I'm not generally a big fan of fiction books, but I loved this book. It is well written, suspenseful and has interesting factual information about World War II interwoven into it. A great summer beach book.』
(Masterfully written and gripping) 『This novel thrusts the reader into wartime England fighting Hitler, who has a superspy in England known as The Needle. The novel focuses on the efforts to catch this spy before he can tell Hitler of a major ruse that England has created to convince the Germans that there will be an invasion in Calais rather than Normandy. The main plot nicely meshes with a subplot about a young couple living on a remote British isle who have a loveless marriage, with the wife despairing of ever finding happiness--just as the British intelligence agent who is tracking The Needle has the same despair after a personal tragedy.
The writing is superb, the action is nonstop, and the suspense is riveting. This is a page turner that provides great entertainment, yet is very plausible even though it is fiction.』
(A Great Piece Of Historical Fiction!!) 『Follet tels the tale of just how its possible for a handful of people can change the world. I loved the cat&mouse game between pro and antaganists. Really good stuff. I'm now on the lookout for more by Follet.』 『
One enemy spy knows the secret to the Allies' greatest deception, a brilliant aristocrat and ruthless assassin -- code name: "The Needle" -- who holds the key to ultimate Nazi victory.
Only one person stands in his way: a lonely Englishwoman on an isolated island, who is beginning to love the killer who has mysteriously entered her life.
All will come to a terrifying conclusion in Ken Follett's unsurpassed and unforgettable masterwork of suspense, intrigue, and the dangerous machinations of the human heart.
This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (the book of five rings) 『I bought it for my boyfriend as a birthday gift. I ended up reading it too because he talk so great about it. I thought it was a great book and very well written. i enjoyed it very much and my boyfriend was very happy with it we plan on buying more books like this one.』
(Great book on Zen, sword fighting, and defeating you enemies.) 『Miyamoto Musashi is a famous Japanese Samurai who was in at least 60 duels often to the death across Japan fighting various warriors from many styles of fighting. Musashi supposedly never lost a duel which is not entirely true as at least on one occasion he fled a battle when the odds were against him. Musashi lived until the ripe old age of 60 which was old back in the time of the samurai. He did not write this book until he was in his fifties after countless battles, contemplation, and practice in becoming a true martial artist. Mushashi's belief system in the five rings or elements that must be mastered to defeat your enemy is the same belief system that the Ninja in ancient Japan had. The Ninja originally adopted these ideas from an ancient Chinese scroll on warfare. The five elements or "rings" as Musashi calls them are Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, and Void. It is interesting to note that Musashi also believes like many people do that the greatest enemy is in fact oneself. This is a very good book from the philosophical standpoint of following Zen and overcoming obstacles and opponents. However, in later chapters Musashi goes into great detail on sword fighting techniques which are not very useful as there is no visual aide to assume the forms he describes. If you want to learn sword fighting techniques I suggest "Shinobi Gatana" (GHOST BLADE) by Steven Hayes - one of the only Americans ever trained by the last Grand Master of Ninjitsu (unfortunately it is hard to come by and only available on VHS). Musashi's book is a journey into the mind of a true martial artist, his ideals and techniques were just as relevant in his time as our own.』
(The book of 5 rings) 『It really opens your mind about how the Martial arts and how to live your life like a martial artist! highly recommended!』
(An interesting read for sure) 『Most books I read to gain an advantage in business, sales or negotiating skills. This book was written hundreds of years ago but is relevant for business or personal life. I have not read any other versions of this book nor will I. This is a amazing read and you will find out more about yourself than you would know if you take the time to study this book. I came out with more questions about myself after reading the book and reflecting about the future. Studying the great leaders and warriors throughout history has many advantages so you can help beat the odds against you.』
(Philosophy of Martial Arts Defined) 『At first glance it may appear this is simply a book on martial arts. However it is much more, encompassing the philosophy of, and necessity for, living the Way of Martial Arts. Miyamoto's many writings delve not only into martial arts, but can be applied much more broadly as a way of meditation and life even in today's modern world. It can teach you to focus while detaching yourself from a volatile situation, and can teach you how to experience peace of the deepest form in a violent, confusing world. I recommend absorbing this book a small bit at a time, and meditating on each principle until you can feel it working in your mind and life.』 『Translated by V. Harris. Japan's answer to the Harvard MBA...Written over three centuries ago by a Samurai warrior, the book has been hailed as a limitless source of psychological insight for businessmen-or anyone who relies on strategy and tactics for outwitting the competition.』 『To learn a Japanese martial art is to learn Zen, and although you can't do so simply by reading a book, it sure does help--especially if that book isThe Book of Five Rings. One of Japan's great samurai sword masters penned in decisive, unfaltering terms this certain path to victory, and like Sun Tzu'sThe Art of Warit is applicable not only on the battlefield but also in all forms of competition. Always observant, creating confusion, striking at vulnerabilities--these are some of the basic principles. Going deeper, we findsuki, the interval of vulnerability, of indecisiveness, of rest, the briefest but most vital moment to strike. In succinct detail, Miyamoto records ideal postures, blows, and psychological tactics to put the enemy off guard and open the way for attack. Most important of all is Miyamoto's concept of rhythm, how all things are in harmony, and that by working with the rhythm of a situation we can turn it to our advantage with little effort. But like Zen, this requires one task above all else, putting the book down and going out to practice.--Brian Bruya』

She lost me when she said she chose to ignore the advice of her doctor while she was pregnant. As a nurse and a mother I cannot believe how a woman could risk the health, and possibly life, of her unborn child just to get into shape to win a race! Shame!』
(As expected....and I bought the book) 『Fascinating, inspirting if you wish for it to be and enjoyable. A fast read that gave a good insight into how Dara thinks, which, since she is who she is and has done what she has done is very interesting/fascinating. Yes, it confirms that her whole life is no where near what anyone would call "normal," but that can't be blamed on her (grew up rich, with model looks and then made millions on her own) and her drive is truly admirable, if a bit over the top (as I believe is necessary for Olympians to be, well, Olympians). Anyway, I think the book is worth buying/reading, but wouldn't call it a "great" book.』
(Female Athletes Will Be Inspired and Feel a Connection with Dara) 『As a competitive Masters swimmer who grew up swimming in the same era as Dara, I loved this book and could relate to it in every way. So many of the coaches and swimmers who make up her story are people I knew or know about so it took me back to "the good ole days" of age group swimming. I also appreciate how she candidly shared some of the most negative aspects of sport - such as undue pressure to be thin and to lose weight which is such a terrible problem because of too much focus on appearance vs. health. This pressure nearly killed a girl I swam with in high school who went to the University of Florida and was never overweight but they made her think she was so she ended up with anorexia! Male coaches and trainers criticizing female athletes and telling them what they should weigh and how they should look has got to stop!!
I felt such a connection to many elements of Dara's life, personality and emotions about her sport which I think any female athlete, not just a swimmer, would be able to relate to. Even though she has more trainers and domestic help than most of her readers, Dara comes across as real person, who anyone could talk to, with problems ordinary people face, but yet she is extraordinary at the same time which makes you want to strive to be better yourself. She also creates the excitement true competitors feel when they are about to race which makes you want to go out and do it! When I finished the book, I couldn't wait to get back on the blocks again which I did the very next day!
This book also sends out an inspirational message to readers that there is much to be gained from competing and being active as older adults which is wonderful - more and more older adults are feeling better than ever in their 40s, 50s and beyond because of healthy activity - thanks, Dara, for getting the message out that getting moving is where its at because I believe that with all my heart!!』
(so motivational!!!) 『Since I'm close to the same age as Dara Torres, I was really drawn to her story while watching the olympics....so when this book came out, I wanted to read it right away. I bought the audio version. Have listened to it 2 times and absolutely love it! I do consider myself an athlete, but the motivation can apply to every aspect in life.
Love it. Highly recommend it!』
(Inspirational Woman) 『Dara Torres is a world class athlete and in this book she shares her secrets to success. They aren't real secrets though. This woman has trained extremely hard all of her life to be on top. And the hard work has paid off for her.
In "Age Is Just a Number" Dara talks about how she got started in swimming, and details her journey from a novice to a professional swimmer. It was pretty interesting to me to read about the amount of training that goes into becoming a professional athlete. In the book Torres also explains how she prepares for competitions and what it's like to compete in the Olympics.
The only complaint that I have is the fact that she didn't get very specific concerning her nutrition. I would have loved to find out how exactly she fuels her body. She does seem to push Living Fuel though, which is the only supplement she mentions by name.
Overall, I enjoyed learning about Dara. She impressed me with her commitment and drive. Reading this book will make you realize that there is no reason to put an age limit on your dreams. You can be successful at any age!』 『
From legendary Olympic gold medalist Dara Torres comes a motivational, inspirational memoir about staying fit, aging gracefully, and pursuing your dreams.
Dara Torres captured the hearts and minds of Americans of all ages when she launched her Olympic comeback as a new mother at the age of forty-one—years after she had retired from competitive swimming and eight years since her last Olympics. When she took three silver medals in Beijing—including a heartbreaking .01-second finish behind the gold medalist in the women’s 50-meter freestyle—America loved her all the more for her astonishing achievement and her good-natured acceptance of the results.
Now, inAge Is Just a Number,Dara reveals how the dream of an Olympic comeback first came to her—when she was months into her first, hard-won pregnancy. With humor and candor, Dara recounts how she returned to serious training—while nursing her infant daughter and contending with her beloved father’s long battle with cancer.
Dara talks frankly about diving back in for this comeback; about being an older athlete in a younger athletes’ game; about competition, doubt, and belief; about working through pain and uncertainty; and finally—about seizing the moment and, most important, never giving up. A truly self-made legend, her story will resonate with women of all ages—and with anyone daring to entertain a seemingly impossible dream.

She was great on the radio, but it just didn't translate into the book. The writing was somewhat choppy and the romance angle seemed to be a forced and somewhat unnecessary component to the overall story. McClure is obviously an interesting and brave woman, but the book just felt flat and rushed.』
(Amazing story of endurance and passion!) 『Tori McClure offers an absorbing view of rowing a boat across the Atlantic Ocean, interspersed with flashbacks about her life. Worth reading!』
(Inspiring and Amazing - I felt like Tori was my best friend during the story) 『This book is so wonderful. I got it for my mom's birthday after listening to Tori interviewed on NPR. She loved it an gave it back to me to read when she was done. I absolutely loved it also. Tori is inspiring and helped me get through a challenging time in my life with her incredible resilience and sense of humor. This book is an amazing present to anyone in your life.』
(Unbelievable courage!) 『This book shows what determination can do and the fortitude it takes to achieve a goal. Inspirational book and one that won't easily be forgotten.』
(All I can say is "Wow!") 『To be very honest, when I had finished the first 30 pages or so I thought I was in for a looooooong read. The book is fairly technical at the beginning, particularly for someone totally unfamiliar with boats or the sport of rowing. Since I had agreed to review it for Amazon, I kept going and I am so glad I did ! By the time I as half way through it, I was staying up way to late to read since I just had to know what was coming next.
This book is part adventure story and part human development story. The author, Tori Murden McClure, chronicles her attempt to become the first woman to row across the Atlantic Ocean. For this arm-chair adventurer, her stories just took my breath away. I can't imagine attempting such a huge endeavor and just reading about her hardships along the way made me exhausted. Intertwined with the story of the crossing, there are flashbacks to her life which help put the need to attempt this in context for the reader. It's a voyage of self-discovery for the author that you better understand by the end of the book. The typical person would just think she is nuts, but after reading her words, I felt much better able to appreciate what drove her to do this. She grew up with a less than ideal childhood taking on the role of defending her mentally handicapped brother Lamar. The parents appear to be fairly clueless about what is happening to their children and left them to take care of themselves and each other.
The author is obviously exceptionally bright and driven (Smith College, Harvard Divinity school) but I was very impressed with her ability to come across as just being honest with her mental and athletic abilities. The lack of ego in someone so exceptional is amazing and inspiring. She is forthright about her faults and failings in a way that makes you care about her as a person by the end of the book.
Absolutely wonderful book to read if you like adventure and if you like seeing someone discover who they are. I would also recommend watching the book trailer on the product page to get a brief visual glimpse of what she endured.
Outstanding ! 』 『
"In the end," writes Tori McClure, "I know I rowed across the Atlantic to find my heart, but in the beginning, I wasn't aware that it was missing."
During June 1998, Tori McClure set out to row across the Atlantic Ocean by herself in a twenty-three-foot plywood boat with no motor or sail. Within days she lost all communication with shore, but nevertheless she decided to keep going. Not only did she lose the sound of a friendly voice, she lost updates on the location of the Gulf Stream and on the weather. Unfortunately for Tori, 1998 is still on record as the worst hurricane season in the North Atlantic. In deep solitude and perilous conditions, she was nonetheless determined to prove what one person with a mission can do. When she was finally brought to her knees by a series of violent storms that nearly killed her, she had to signal for help and go home in what felt like complete disgrace.
Back in Kentucky, however, Tori's life began to change in unexpected ways. She fell in love. At the age of thirty-five, she embarked on a serious relationship for the first time, making her feel even more vulnerable than sitting alone in a tiny boat in the middle of the Atlantic. She went to work for Muhammad Ali, who told her that she did not want to be known as the woman who "almost" rowed across the Atlantic Ocean. And she knew that he was right.
In this thrilling story of high adventure and romantic quest, Tori McClure discovers through her favorite way—the hard way—that the most important thing in life is not to prove you are superhuman but to fully to embrace your own humanity. With a wry sense of humor and a strong voice, she gives us a true memoir of an explorer who maps her world with rare emotional honesty.
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Excellent Discussion) 『Excellent review of a daunting thought of staying safe at sea. Very clear in how to protect yourself and your crew. Providing excellent descriptions of the efficacy of the technique of heaving to for any reason. 』
(Storm Tactics Review) 『This is an excellent book. Well researched, thorough, with experience from many sources and clear, practical guidelines for real life use. Highly recommended.』
(Storm Tactics Handbook: Modern Methods of Heaving-to for Survival in Extreme Conditions, 3rd Edition) 『Storm Tactics Handbook: Modern Methods of Heaving-to for Survival in Extreme Conditions, 3rd Edition Hands on approach, real cases examined. Pragmatic. Though through careful planning a modern sailor would seldom find him/herself in the conditions described, the book is very readable, informative and, most important, helps increase skills and safety of the average sailor.』
(A must have) 『I got the 3rd edition. In very few words what I believe it makes this book a real treasure is the authentic storm experience Lin and Larry is sharing with the reader. It is not a book written or inspired by other books. It is a testimony of real life storm survival experience and the story about how they improved their techniques over time. And maybe what I value most about this book is that Lin and Larry do not give general ideas and stop there, but they do go into the very fine details about almost everything. Also catamaran enthusiasts be warned that since Larry and Lin have no sailing experience on catamarans you will find nothing about cats in this book. Since personally I haven't gotten into more that force 6 storm, this book was an excellent educative reading and provided me with more that enough information to try lay hoving-to with or without a para-anchor in worse that force 6 storm conditions. Also note that the book is clearly written for real sailors, its focus being on how you get things done properly and in the most optimal way. Even though the science behind these phenomenons it is mentioned in a few places, you will not find here a mathematical model of let say Karman vortex street or other fluid dynamics phenomenon that may be of any interest in boating. It is a pragmatic book, a comprehensive essay about storm tactics and a superb attempt of passing by this valuable knowledge to sailor from all over the world. Thank you Lin and Perry. 』
(Storm Tactics) 『Find the book clear, concise and complete. Full of facts; their experiences and the others well narrated』 『I hope this book gets into many hands. I really believe it will save some lives. Surely it will result in cruising sailors going through gales at sea in a lot more comfort and with a lot more confidence. (Roger C Taylor, Author,Elements of Seamanship, 1995) Whether you have an offshore cruiser or an inshore day boat, this is a volume that makes compulsive and compulsory reading. One day it might even save your vessel or your life. (Paul Gelder,Yachting Monthly, 1996) Covers storm management on small and large boats, boats of traditional and modern design. Storm Tactics was just what I needed. (Pat Henry,SAIL Magazine, 1996) Proper storm management is not just sending maydays. How many voyagers can really heave-to, set a sea anchor, or set storm sails? The Pardeys tell you how and why to do it. (John Kettlewell,Ocean Navigator, 1996) .....will cause you to think in a more positive way about dealing with heavy weather, consequently increasing your confidence. (W M Nixon,Yachting World, 1997) What the Pardeys have to say on the art of storm survival will no doubt stimulate much-needed debate. What they succeed in serving up is an outstanding five-course meal for the brain. (Don Long,48 Degrees North, 1996) Definitely worth a read - none of us wants to get caught out in storm conditions, but it can only help to have other peoples experiences to fall back on when it finally does happen. (Editor,The Shetland Times, 1996) What the Pardeys commend is supported by extensive evidence from their own and others experiences. The result is indeed a handbook of storm tactics which is likely to become a classic contribution to seagoing safety. (Denny M. Desoutter,Practical Boat Owner, 1996) We all hope never to meet that ultimate storm, but if we sail long enough offshore we probably will. ReadStorm Tactics Handbookfirst. (Anne Hammick, Ocean Cruising Club, England, 1996) Should be compulsory reading for all who venture offshore. Buy it, read it, use it. (George Taylor, Editor,Practical Boat Owner, 1996)』

Each part of the repair process is explained in theory and practice so you understand the whys along with the hows. Why should spreaders be angled? How to make a drip type stuffing box into a dripless wonder? Use a thinwall brass tube to pump oil from the sump instead of rubber. Use reversed masking tape to remove loose bristles from your paint brush. He touches everything I wanted and more than a few I'd have never thought of. It's just the best book on general care and feeding of your boat to keep her happy and the skipper on the water.』
(This Old Boat) 『This book is a great find - it covers everything, in significant detail, regarding all facets of boat maintenance and rebuild. It is even good for giving pointers on how to spot a lemon. Well worth the read!』
(An essential boat maintenance manual) 『The second edition of This Old Boat is a more professional production than the first edition. Not that the first edition was bad, on the contrary, it was a good resource, but it had a somewhat hand-made feel about it. The diagrams were freehand sketches and a lot of the information lacked depth. Although it was always a good place to start, it was usually necessary to turn to other reference works (such as Calder's "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual" or Spurr's "Guide to Upgrading Your Cruising Sailboat") for precise information about how to carry out a certain repair or improvement. However, what it lacked in depth of information it more than made up for with its clear explanations of the "big picture" and Casey's ability to impart a sense of motivation.
This new edition improves on the first by being a good deal larger than the first edition, having information that is more in-depth, and illustrations that are much improved. It is now closer in "feel" to Calder's Boatowner's Manual. It also covers a lot of the information contained in Casey's several short sailboat maintenance handbooks, and to an extent it updates and replaces them. I wouldn't go as far as to say that this is the only book by Casey that you now need to own in order to have all of the information he has previously published, but it is close.』
(boat book review) 『This is an excellent resource for someone hoping to renew/renovate an old boat, especially a sailboat!』
(Comprehensive boat owners repair manual) 『Wish I had this updated edition before starting my refit--this would have replaced many other individual texts and lots of trial and error work. Simple building-block projects in each section demystify boat construction and accurately impress the simplicity of seemingly complex improvements.
You, yes even you, can actually do many of the things listed in this book if you have the requisite patience. Would definately buy again, great reference even if you elect not to do repairs and improvements yourself so you can understand what your yard is charging for...』 『
