>price: Northfield Publishing Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (A great theory but ridiculous in practice) ![]() ![]() 『This book is like so many other relationship books. The theory is great, but it is impossible to practice, especially if both parties aren't involved. For example after I read this book I thought I knew what my husband's love language was and tried to implement it. Unfortunately, I didn't communicate clearly to him or ask him if my assumptions were correct. I ended up doing more harm than good and we are now split. I think the message should be a lot clearer and it should be noted that just because the book leads you down one path doesn't mean it's the right one for your partner. It might have been more productive if I had shared what I was doing with my husband but we were having difficulty communicating and I should have corrected that first. This book led me to believe that if I just did what he said, everything would be great. Unfortunately that was not the case. In addition, I was somewhat put off by the author's interpretation of Christianity. It doesn't jive with my idea of what Christianity is, in fact it seems somewhat sexist.』 (Little to offer) ![]() 『It is quite disturbing, if not insulting, to read this book and note the level of intellect it addresses. It is juvenile and silly. It is written for the clueless, that is, people who don't think. Furthermore, it's written by such a limited mind that Chapman's taking the name "Dr." is truly laughable. Take for example, Chapman's names for "the two main personality types" that date and marry: Dead Sea falls for Bubbling Brook and vice versa. Yes, that's right. Bear with me. Dead Sea just takes and does not give thereby giving the impression that he is eating up every word she says, like, he's listening, right? Bubbling Brook, on the other hand, keeps the conversation rolling along, giving the impression that she's entirely satisfied with being the one doing all the work and making connection. Hey, she doesn't mind; she doesn't know how to shut her mouth anyway. Each thinks the other is wonderful because the other's style deludes them into believing they are loved. But a year or two later of this kind of togetherness and would you believe disappointment sets in? Really? You're crushed?? You thought this kind of love was what you wanted, didn't you. Well, "Dr." Chapman is here to tell you that you have been bamboozled. I'm paraphrasing this cogent concept far, far beyond the silly sentences that will have you rolling your eyes while reading this printed so-called book replete with biblical footnotes. And, can you guess what happens next: You can't? Well, let "Dr."Chapman explain it because you can't think for yourself, can you? No, according to Dr. Chapman. No one in my life talked like this since I was four years old in Sunday School, long before I grew up and developed a brain, critical thought, and an adult knowledge of the complexities of human nature. But, back to Dead Sea and Bubbling Brook, who by the way are, by Chapman's account, all the couples supposedly sitting and laughing at his seminars, feeling completely nailed by his remarkably "funny" jokes about them, bringing about miracles in their lives by giving them five categories to wake them up and bring happiness. The five categories are so amazing that, well, you just have read them to believe them! Many truly helpful levels of insight are never explored with the reader - only how to fill up your spouse's "Love Tank." There is no expectation that the reader is intelligent. I sincerely hope that we are not turning out classrooms of graduates that need this type of flashcard book or seminar. That would truly be a tragedy for the future of this country's intellect. Also, check the credentials of your leaders. Otherwise you might find yourself stuck in a book or a seminar with someone who knows far less than you already know and offers nothing helpful whatsoever. Finally, I am aware this review has a sarcastic tone. However, it simply distresses me terribly how our culture is declining to this degree of so-called professional help.』 (Great) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Wonderful book with wonderful ideas and thoughts. Great insight. Good for couples of any ages. Really makes you think and ask the right questions of yourself and your partner... Wish I had heard of this 38 years ago when I got married! I recommend this book most definitely. It will give a gift to your relationship!!』 (Better late than never...) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『A friend recommended this book to me while we were discussing books in general. I bought a copy from Amazon, on spec, and found it well worth the cover price. Gary Chapman's analysis and view of love languages is really all about how people, couples in particular, communicate in their daily lives. The basis of the text is that if people learn to communicate with each other, using the correct languages, then many of the large, and small, points of conflict will disappear. I wish I'd heard of it sooner; in fact I wish I'd seen it years before it was even published! I thoroughly recommend this to any couples who are just starting out on a long term relationship (I'm just about to order a copy to give to my daughter) and to those whose relationship has survived for a long time (whether or not they are having trouble). Well worth a read...』 (Definitely worth the money!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This book is great for helping understand why you get unexpected reactions from your spouse...cause most of us speak different love languages! I purchased the book for use on a long drive we were making together and it was definitely worth it...he never would have gotten around to reading the paper version but he was a 'captive' audience in the car! And it gave us time to talk about what we'd heard. Our relationship is definitely better for the purchase!』 『 Marriage should be based on love, right? But does it seem as though you and your spouse are speaking two different languages?New York Timesbestselling author Dr. Gary Chapman guides couples in identifying, understanding, and speaking their spouse’s primary love language—quality time, words of affirmation, gifts, acts of service, or physical touch. By learning the five love languages, you and your spouse will discover your unique love languages and learn practical steps in truly loving each other. Chapters are categorized by love language for easy reference, and each one ends with specific, simple steps to express a specific language to your spouse and guide your marriage in the right direction. A newly designed love languages assessment will help you understand and strengthen your relationship. You can build a lasting, loving marriage together. Includes a promotional code to gain exclusive online access to the new comprehensive love languages assessment. 『Unhappiness in marriage often has a simple root cause: we speak different love languages, believes Dr. Gary Chapman. While working as a marriage counselor for more than 30 years, he identified five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In a friendly, often humorous style, he unpacks each one. Some husbands or wives may crave focused attention; another needs regular praise. Gifts are highly important to one spouse, while another sees fixing a leaky faucet, ironing a shirt, or cooking a meal as filling their "love tank." Some partners might find physical touch makes them feel valued: holding hands, giving back rubs, and sexual contact. Chapman illustrates each love language with real-life examples from his counseling practice. How do you discover your spouse’s – and your own – love language? Chapman’s short questionnaires are one of several ways to find out. Throughout the book, he also includes application questions that can be answered more extensively in the beautifully detailed companion leather journal (an exclusive Amazon.com set). Each section of the journal corresponds with a chapter from the book, offering opportunities for deeper reflection on your marriage. Although some readers may find choosing to love a spouse that they no longer even like–hoping the feelings of affection will follow later– a difficult concept to swallow, Chapman promises that the results will be worth the effort. "Love is a choice," says Chapman. "And either partner can start the process today." --Cindy Crosby. >price: Hyperion Usually ships in 6 to 12 days Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (A feisty feline that can teach us all something about life and death) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Death is one of those taboo subjects in the United States that we try to avoid. We are a society that will oftentimes take extreme measures to prolong youth and avoid the natural process that leads us toward the end of life. This book is one that will bring death into clearer focus for the reader. I don't mean in a macabre way that focuses heavily on the process of dying, but one that focuses on the passage from a life of suffering to a new place of being free. I was deeply touched to read both Dr. Dosa's own personal story and the story that he shared about Oscar, his feline protégé. This is a book that is about Dr. Dosa as much as it is about Oscar the cat. Throughout the pages a mutual and trusting relationship is built between man and creature and a level of trust and seniority is awarded to a feline who has developed a certain intuition for knowing when a person isgoing to make the passage from this life to the next. The story is told in a profoundly personal and very touching way. The author digs deeply in writing this book about Oscar and we learn about his own vocation to serve one of the most difficult populations - those battling dementia in the finalstages of their lives. They have become adult children. We also get to know more about Dr. Dosa as he shares his own chronic health issues and reflects on what his life may hold in the future. Still, he shares his "rounds" with Oscar the cat. The story is sweet, compassionate, heartwarming and nothing short of amazing. Never underestimate the powers of a feisty feline. I absolutely love this book and even joined Oscar's Facebook page! 5 stars! 』 (Coping with End of Life) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『If you have ever placed a loved one in a nursing home, you know what a wrenching decision that is. Each visit is filled with guilt, anxiety and frustration and yet you know this is the best solution, given the circumstances. You will recognize the residents and family in this heartwarming story of a very special feline. As I approach the one year anniversary of my mother's passing, this book was just what I needed to reflect, remember and find comfort that others shared so many of my thoughts and emotions.』 (A sweet story of an amazing cat) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Dr. David Dosa is a geriatrician in a family of pediatricians. He writes that he chose this field because of the rich tapestry of stories his patients have lived. Dr. Dosa works at a nursing home in Rhode Island that cares for patients with dementia. A few years ago, a cat who lived at the facility (and the author describes several cats who live and work there) started showing remarkable behavior. Oscar was a relatively aloof cat who didn't want to spend much time with people, although he didn't mind if a staffer gave him a few scraches under the chin. However, when he sensed a patient was hours from death, he would go to that person's room, jump onto the bed, curl up beside the patient in question and wait. Often, he would not move until the funeral home showed up to remove the deceased. After the doctor learns of the cat's extraordinary behavior, he begins talking to the families of patients who had died with Oscar by his side. He had hoped to try to understand the cat's unusual behavoir but felt he was learning more about dementia and what it does to the patients and their families. He notes that Oscar's presence at the end comforts the families of the ill and maybe even the patients themslves He does point out at the end that one World War II medic he talked to could tell whether someone was going to live or die by a person's smell and theorizes that Oscar may be able to tell that the sweet smell and be drawn to it. But he still isn't sure what draws Oscar to the dying patients. But does it matter. Animals do amazing things that we can appreciate, even if we don't understand it. This is less a memoir--after all, due to confidentiality issues, the author had to change names and details and make composites of patients. But it does detail what happens to dementia patients from a doctor's point of view and how they try to care for patients whose memories are slipping. If you were interested by the news story that appeared a few years ago about this extraordinary cat, you will likely enjoy the book.』 (RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "THE EXPRESSION "A SHADOW OF THEIR FORMER SELF" WAS NO LONGER A CLICHÉ!") ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『If a couple of decades ago I had made the statement that my life via family members had been touched on numerous occasions by Alzheimer's/dementia I would have been looked at very strangely. Sadly... if someone made that statement today... hopefully... other than true human compassion... there wouldn't even be a sideways glance. "TODAY THERE ARE OVER FIVE-MILLION PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES WITH ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS MORE WITH OTHER LESS COMMON FORMS OF DEMENTIA. WITHOUT NEW TREATMENTS, ESTIMATES SUGGEST THAT THIS NUMBER IS LIKELY TO SKYROCKET AS OUR POPULATION CONTINUES TO AGE." Despite the staggering number of "eroding" minds... body... and souls... there is so little known... and so much to learn about this heartbreaking disease... that literally changes the lives of entire families... AND health care providers... with the unrelenting power of a tsunami. The author Doctor David Dosa is a geriatrician at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island. The heart wrenching story he tells here is also an educational journey for all involved. The recipients of the mental and emotional knowledge imparted here are current and future patients... their families... Dr. Dosa and his staff... and all such medical professionals that make the smart decision and open their mind and hearts to the stories in this book. The title character is Oscar the cat... though an important figure... what with his mystical power to "know" which patient was going to die shortly... and thus stand guard in an unrelenting vigil... which soothed patients... family... and medical staff... in ways no one could fully explain... yet... despite this "gift"... Oscar is not really the ultimate reward to readers of this book. Doctor Dosa was admittedly not a "cat-person" and he didn't believe in Oscar's medically-psychic-endowment. Dosa's desire to talk to the family members of his deceased patients after the fact to get their perception of Oscar's effect led to a much wider discussion into all the sad and awful "ripple-effects" of Alzheimer's. Discussed intimately was the pre-diagnosis averting of facing the truth by loving family members. How they ignored the tell tale signs of this insidious disease. Then the painful realization that there would be years of visiting without being recognized... but yet their visits were critical. Tearfully enlightening is the views from all sides (patient/family/doctor) as to what treatments should be continued... where they should or shouldn't be done... and when they should be stopped. The personal sharing of a child's anguished summary of their parent's deterioration could be described as poetry... yet it's so sad there must be a better word... "EVERY DAY I MISS THE MOTHER I HAD SIXTEEN YEARS AGO, BUT NOT THE PERSON SHE BECAME. IT WAS LIKE WATCHING A KID, BUT HAVING THEM UNLEARN EVERYTHING THEY KNEW." And another family said... "IT MUST BE LIKE WATCHING A FILM OF A PERSON'S LIFE RUN BACKWARD, I THOUGHT, EXCEPT THE PERSON DOESN'T GET ANY YOUNGER." The author explains his own angst in dealing with this unique morose disease: "IN CASES WHERE THE PATIENT HAS A TERMINAL ILLNESS SUCH AS CANCER, COMFORT-CARE DISCUSSIONS ARE RELATIVELY CONCRETE... "ALTHOUGH DISEASES SUCH AS ALZHEIMER'S ARE ALSO CONSIDERED TERMINAL, THEY MANIFEST THEMSELVES MUCH MORE SLOWLY. LIKE EROSION THAT CHANGES THE LANDSCAPE OF A BEACH, THE EFFECTS OF THESE DISEASES ARE MEASURED OVER MONTHS AND YEARS RATHER THAN DAYS." "CARE PROVIDERS AND FAMILIES ARE FORCED TO GRAPPLE WITH DECISIONS LIKE WITHHOLDING ANTIBIOTICS FOR A POTENTIALLY CURABLE PNEUMONIA OR DECIDING WHEN IT'S NO LONGER APPROPRIATE TO CONDUCT FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC TESTING FOR AN EVERYDAY CONDITION LIKE ANEMIA OR WEIGHT LOSS." The greatest strength of this book is that even the doctor understands that medical definitions and multi-syllabic words are not what's important. It's the true humanity of all involved and there needs to be so much more education and guidance from the very first signs of this horrendous dignity destroying disease... and this book is an excellent starting place for everyone. 』 (A good read, but not really about Oscar the cat) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I ordered his book having heard about Oscar and thought this book would be a very touching read about the cat of Steere House that instinctively knows when a resident is about to pass away. The cat does have a role in this book and is a major player but the book really isn't about Oscar so much as it is about the doctor himself, his relationships with others and the Alzheimer's patients for whom he cares. The author, Dr. Dosa, oversees patient care at Steere House, a nursing home for patients with dementia (which includes Alzheimer's disease). Steere House is also home to several cats, of interest among them being Oscar who has an uncanny knack of knowing when a patient's life is about to end. When Oscar senses such, he finds his way in the patient's room and curls up on the bed until he or she passes away. Dr. Dosa sets out to find out more about this cat. He introduces a good number of people in this book, patient and staff alike as well as former patients' relatives and former staff members. Each one is tied to Oscar in some way, but through the conversations that ensue relationships are introduced or built and the devastating effects for dementia are explored and explained. The reader gets to know the characters sufficiently to gain an attachment to them also gains a better understanding of dementia - and Alzheimer's disease in particular. This is a well-written and interesting book, filled with touching stories about people learning to let go of people and of a doctor that tries his best to understand and comfort them. All of them are touched by a special cat that instinctively knows when to be there when he is needed most.』 『 A remarkable cat. A special gift. A life-changing journey. They thought he was just a cat. When Oscar arrived at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rhode Island he was a cute little guy with attitude. He loved to stretch out in a puddle of sunlight and chase his tail until he was dizzy. Occasionally he consented to a scratch behind the ears, but only when it suited him. In other words, he was a typical cat. Or so it seemed. It wasn't long before Oscar had created something of a stir. Apparently, this ordinary cat possesses an extraordinary gift: he knows instinctively when the end of life is near. Oscar is a welcome distraction for the residents of Steere House, many of whom are living with Alzheimer's. But he never spends much time with them--until they are in their last hours. Then, as if this were his job, Oscar strides purposely into a patient's room, curls up on the bed, and begins his vigil. Oscar provides comfort and companionship when people need him most. And his presence lets caregivers and loved ones know that it's time to say good-bye. Oscar's gift is a tender mercy. He teaches by example: embracing moments of life that so many of us shy away from. Making Rounds with Oscaris the story of an unusual cat, the patients he serves, their caregivers, and of one doctor who learned how to listen. Heartfelt, inspiring, and full of humor and pathos, this book allows readers to take a walk into a world rarely seen from the outside, a world we often misunderstand. 』『 Making Rounds with Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat > 『 Making Rounds with Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat > 『 Homer's Odyssey > 『 Homer's Odyssey > 『 A Snowflake in My Hand > 『 A Snowflake in My Hand > 『 Dickens of a Cat, A: and Other Stories of the Cats We Love > 『 Dickens of a Cat, A: and Other Stories of the Cats We Love > 『 Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine&a Miracle > 『 Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine&a Miracle > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health > 『 The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health > 『 Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure > 『 Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure > 『 The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World > 『 The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World > 『 Healthy at 100: The Scientifically Proven Secrets of the World's Healthiest and Longest-Lived Peoples > 『 Healthy at 100: The Scientifically Proven Secrets of the World's Healthiest and Longest-Lived Peoples > 『 Becoming Vegan: The Complete Guide to Adopting a Healthy Plant-Based Diet > 『 Becoming Vegan: The Complete Guide to Adopting a Healthy Plant-Based Diet > 『 Eat to Live: The Revolutionary Formula for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss > T. I love all animals, but I also love meat..I've always struggled with the thought of the torture animals have to go through just so we can eat...I use to do the low carb diet..It made me very sick...I had headaches so bad I went to the e.r. room...also had so many intestinal problems to go with it...not good....all the info from this book really was very informative. I'm going to pay more attention to what I eat from now on. Thank you Dr!』 (Powerfully Persuasive) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Let's be honest: Dr. Colin Campbell is not a great writer. His book is sprawling with ideas and information, and a good professional editor would have toned down his rhetoric, made simple and concise his language, and structured and organized the chapters more effectively. One metaphor that he used -- the spread of cancer as though it were infesting a lawn -- I strenuously objected to, and would have instead explained cancer in this manner: a body is a complex nation where, because of bad policies and bad government, a general level of disaffectation arises to the level that certain organs declare open rebellion against the kingdom. And some readers will find it dissatisfying and bewildering how Dr. Campbell violently jumps from one topic to the next. There is no denying that Dr. Campbell is not a good writer, but there's also no denying that Dr. Campbell is a great scientist. Having achieved a formidable amount of success and fame and wealth Dr. Campbell, at age 70 when he wrote this book, has decided, because it's the right and necessary thing for him to do as a doctor, to challenge the profession, the industry, and the society that has conferred such success, fame, and wealth on him. Powerfully persuasive and relentlessly committed, Dr. Campbell explains why a plant-based diet is far more nutritious than an animal-based diet. In fact, an animal-based diet is, according to Dr. Campbell, the main reason why obesity and cancer are so prevalent and pervasive in North America. Baseball is quintessentially American and so is apple pie and so is heart disease, writes Dr. Campbell in anger and frustration. The evidence is overwhelming: vegetarians live a healthier, happier, and longer life than non-vegetarians. In fact, Dr. Campbell himslf converted from a good farm-boy who drank two quarts of milk a day to a staunch vegetarian who raised his boys as vegetarians. He cites the example of the Phillipines where the affluent are ironically unhealthier than the poor because they consume so much protein. Then there is the massive China study where Dr. Campbell and his research team discovered that Chinese consume more calories but are much thinner than Americans. Chinese are much more likely to die from diseases of poverty (for example, tuberculosis), but Americans are much more likely to die from diseases of affluence (for example, heart disease). But despite the overwhelming evidence -- in fact, as Dr. Campbell asserts quite convincingly, a lot of this is obvious, common sense, and have been known in Western culture at least since Socrates -- Americans are still choosing to live unhealthy lives. There's that macho culture that insists that eating meat is manly, but there's also a silent conspiracy among healthcare practitioners, the United States government (especially those in charge of food and nutrition), and the food industry to keep Americans eating meat and drinking milk, no matter what the long-term individual and social costs are. In fact, Dr. Campbell even gives examples of researchers and doctors who are paid to spy on and sabotage unfavorable (in other words, objective and unbiased) nutrition research. Then there are those doctors who have been black-listed because they dared speak the truth. "The China Study" is a powerfully persuasive book that should be mandatory reading in schools all around the world. 』 (Information that could save your life, or that of a loved one.) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I have spent the past seven years reading every nutrition-based book I could get my hands on and this is by far one of the top three most informative, life-changing books I've read to date. I only wish I would have known this information before I watched my sister die a brutal death from a Diabetes-related ER visit. Why this book is not part of every medical and nutrition-based degree program is beyond me. While revealing that proper nutrition can have a dramatic effect on reducing and reversing these ailments as well as curbing obesity, this text calls into question the practices of many of the current dietary programs, such as the Atkins diet, that are widely popular in the West. The politics of nutrition and the impact of special interest groups in the creation and dissemination of public information are also discussed. 』『 The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health > 『 The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health > 『 Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure > 『 Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure > 『 The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World > 『 The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World > 『 Healthy at 100: The Scientifically Proven Secrets of the World's Healthiest and Longest-Lived Peoples > 『 Healthy at 100: The Scientifically Proven Secrets of the World's Healthiest and Longest-Lived Peoples > 『 Becoming Vegan: The Complete Guide to Adopting a Healthy Plant-Based Diet > 『 Becoming Vegan: The Complete Guide to Adopting a Healthy Plant-Based Diet > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children > 『 NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children > 『 Parenting Without Power Struggles: Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids While Staying Cool, Calm and Connected > 『 Parenting Without Power Struggles: Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids While Staying Cool, Calm and Connected > 『 Pink Brain, Blue Brain: How Small Differences Grow Into Troublesome Gaps -- And What We Can Do About It > 『 Pink Brain, Blue Brain: How Small Differences Grow Into Troublesome Gaps -- And What We Can Do About It > 『 Tools of the Mind: The Vygotskian Approach to Early Childhood Education (2nd Edition) > 『 Tools of the Mind: The Vygotskian Approach to Early Childhood Education (2nd Edition) > 『 What's Going on in There? : How the Brain and Mind Develop in the First Five Years of Life > 『 What's Going on in There? : How the Brain and Mind Develop in the First Five Years of Life > 『 What Should I Do with My Life?: The True Story of People Who Answered the Ultimate Question > Po Bronson,Ashley Merryman

It will make you think about some practices.』 (Good overview, thought provoking!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I've recommended this to all my friends with kids. I think it's great that the authors don't seem to push a particular 'style' of parenting, they simply focus on the scientific research. That makes this book accessible and meaningful for parents of every type. The chapters on race, lying, and teens were especially informative and thought-provoking for me.』 (This is a great book) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『It reinforced some of my own ideas, such as kids needing way more sleep than most of them get. But then the chapter on children and race was so surprising and eye-opening. I'd never read any of those studies before and I think that is the most critical section in the book. Parents and teachers need to read it. Wish I had read it when my children were younger. But I did read a lot of parts out loud to my teenage children and we discussed them. So I hope they still benefit from what I learned in this book!』 (Interesting Information, But Presentation Not the Best) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This book by Bronson and Merryman discusses some of the new research based thinking on children and even young adults. There is quite a bit of interesting information presented, but better presentation/layout would have made the book more effective, if you ask me. It give it 5 stars for content and 3 at best for presentation for an average of about 4. Many major topics are covered such as the INVERSE power of praise, how lowering average sleep time is REALLY a problem, race relations (and how integration in school may INCREASE segregation into racial groups), kids and lying, the errors in trying to evaluate giftedness too early, sibling rivalry, teens and arguing, self control/focus, educational TV and aggression, developing language skills early and even something on gratitude in the conclusions. Much new research turns previous thinking on its ear. Some of the results are very surprising, but maybe not if you really think about them for a while. One point the authors make is that maybe we have been wrong about children, because we start with the assumption that they are really the same as adults, when studies indicate that their brains are different and hence so is their behavior at times - and not just a little different. I have recommended the book to several friends with children on the way, with children of different ages, and even to some with grown children who seem to wonder why bringing their kids up was so hard. I think even people who never had/have children could really get something out of the book. The real drawback of the book is that it is not that well presented. Message to authors and book editors: with non-fiction, it is usually more effective to have many subheading in a book covering many topics/subtopics so that readers can easily follow you. Numbering points sometimes helps as well. I also found the book was best near the start and near the end. In the middle it was kind of harder to get through for some reason - maybe it was just me. But, don't let presentation issues put you off. They weren't that bad, and the book makes a lot of interesting points. Recommended. 』 (an interesting read) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This is definitely an interesting read primarily because it challenges some of the assumptions made by parents regarding effective child rearing. As an educator and a parent, I found much of the information presented in the book to be "common sense". Good educators know that excessive praise is not only useless but can be harmful. They know that you praise effort not innate ability. Of course there are many educators and even more parents who do not understand this basic idea. Praising smarts or any characteristic (hair, eye color) that the child does not control is wrong! As an educator, I see the harm that helicopter parents inflict daily. I see the "output" of the children that are told they are smart and I see how they react to challenges. Trust me - they don't handle challenges very well. They are so afraid of not appearing smart that they simply can't take an intellectual risk. Or, they are so used to having an adult step in and "fix" everything for them that they can't solve the most basic social conflicts that occur on the playground. Parents and educators need to recognize that truly bright children are smart enough to know when they actually do a "good job" and they are aware it is not happening a dozen times each day. I think "good job" should be reserved for times when a child really does "lay it all on the line" and does his/her best. It looses meaning when a child hears it every time he/she empties a bucket of sand or eats a carrot stick. Children need to be kids - they need to take risks, fail, get up - dust themselves off (notice I said dust themselves off - not have parents do it for them) and try again. It is really the way learning occurs and let's face it - a real life skill. Parents and educators should focus more on resilience than perfection... the latter simply doesn't exist. I recommend this book because I think the authors have presented some thought provoking chapters even if many are obvious - (kids need quality sleep and plenty of it - I thought everyone knew that!) I can only hope that we all take a close look at our interactions with children - and reform just a little.... for the sake of the kids』 『In a world of modern, involved, caring parents, why are so many kids aggressive and cruel? Where is intelligence hidden in the brain, and why does that matter? Why do cross-racial friendships decrease in schools that are more integrated? If 98% of kids think lying is morally wrong, then why do 98% of kids lie? What's the single most important thing that helps infants learn language? It was an overnight hit, eventually selling 15 million copies. How to Win Friends and Influence Peopleis just as useful today as it was when it was first published, because Dale Carnegie had an understanding of human nature that will never be outdated. Financial success, Carnegie believed, is due 15 percent to professional knowledge and 85 percent to "the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people." He teaches these skills through underlying principles of dealing with people so that they feel important and appreciated. He also emphasizes fundamental techniques for handling people without making them feel manipulated. Carnegie says you can make someone want to do what you want them to by seeing the situation from the other person's point of view and "arousing in the other person an eager want." You learn how to make people like you, win people over to your way of thinking, and change people without causing offense or arousing resentment. For instance, "let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers," and "talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person." 1. Get attention:Lower your voice almost to a whisper and then say your request. Kids aren’t used to a quiet request. 2. Increase positive behavior:Research shows that giving kids the right kind of praise (called“positive reinforcement”) is one of the best ways to shape new behavior. So, catch your kid doing the action you want. Just make sure your praise is specific and tells your child exactly what he did right. (Adding “because” or “that” takes your praise up a notch. “I’m so impressed that you started your homework all by yourself this time.”) 3. Stretch persistence:Praising the child’s effort (“You’re working so hard”) and not inherent intelligence (”You’re so smart”) is proven to enhance perseverance and performance, but the child is also more likely to bounce back from a mistake—all because he feels success is not mixed. 4. Reduce fear:Expose your child to a fear in small manageable doses and help them develop a statement to speak back to the worry (“Go away worry!” or “I can do this!”) 5. Curb a tantrum:The longer you give attention to a tantrum the longer it lasts. Ignore, ignore, ignore! 6. Nurture kindness:Encourage your child to use the Two Praise Rule everyday.“Say or do at least two kind things to someone.” Random acts of kindness really are catchy! 7. Increase assertiveness:Stress:“Look at the color of the talker’s eyes.” Using eye contact helps kids appear confident. Strong body posture also helps a child be less likely to be bullied. 8. Friendship builder:The two most commonly used traits of well-liked kids are“smiling” and “encouraging.” Reinforce those traits in your child to boost his friendship quotient. 9. Develop healthy eating habits.Eating relaxed family meals regularly enhances kids’ psychosocial well- being, boosts grades and deters behaviors like smoking and drinking and eating disorders as well as teaches the child healthy eating habits. 10. Curb nagging.Say "no" the first time and don’t back down. The average kid nags nine times knowing the parent will give in. 』『 The Big Book of Parenting Solutions: 101 Answers to Your Everyday Challenges and Wildest Worries (Child Development) > 『 The Big Book of Parenting Solutions: 101 Answers to Your Everyday Challenges and Wildest Worries (Child Development) > 『 Parents Do Make a Difference: How to Raise Kids with Solid Character, Strong Minds, and Caring Hearts (The Jossey-Bass Psychology Series) > 『 Parents Do Make a Difference: How to Raise Kids with Solid Character, Strong Minds, and Caring Hearts (The Jossey-Bass Psychology Series) > 『 Building Moral Intelligence: The Seven Essential Virtues that Teach Kids to Do the Right Thing > 『 Building Moral Intelligence: The Seven Essential Virtues that Teach Kids to Do the Right Thing > 『 No More Misbehavin': 38 Difficult Behaviors and How to Stop Them > 『 No More Misbehavin': 38 Difficult Behaviors and How to Stop Them > 『 Don't Give Me That Attitude!: 24 Rude, Selfish, Insensitive Things Kids Do and How to Stop Them > 『 Don't Give Me That Attitude!: 24 Rude, Selfish, Insensitive Things Kids Do and How to Stop Them > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 My Horizontal Life > 『 My Horizontal Life > 『 Are You There, Vodka?
