UNC fans will love it and everyone will appreciate the rags to riches story of a coaching "legend in his own time".』 『Coach Roy Williams, one of the most respected, successful, and dominant basketball coaches in the nation, had an unlikely rise to the Hall of Fame and a career that boasts the highest winning percentage among all active college coaches. Now, for the first time, Williams tells the story of his life that few people know, from his turbulent family life as a child to the North Carolina Tar Heels' National Championship victory in 2009. He speaks candidly of his past, his passions, his inspirations, and the coaching philosphy behind one of college basketball's most successful programs. And he recounts the determination that took him from a small home in the mountains of North Carolina to the very pinacle of coaching success.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (New Ideas) 『I wanted to know how I could become a faster runner. This book gave me some new insights on running that I had never had, nor known. I was well satisfied with the book.』
(A Critical Review of ChiRunning by a barefoot runner) 『I have been a barefoot runner since 2005, at which time I re-learned how to correctly run using my awareness and the teachings of numerous sources. I have read Danny Dryer's ChiRunning book and watched his ChiRunning DVD. I have also studied The Pose Running Technique on DVD and the workbook. In addition, I have experience practicing Qi Gong (Chi Kung), meditation, and yoga. I have also studied anatomy, posture, The Alexander Technique, and Rolfing Structural Integration. My partner is also a Chinese Medicine professional and Acupuncturist. So basically, I know a thing or two in this field...
In light of the acclaim that Danny Dryer is receiving for his ChiRunning technique, there are some critical errors and marketing misperceptions that I feel should be addressed. I base these insights on my own personal experience and my extensive research into natural running techniques and chi energy.
1. This book does not at all use the chi (qi) energy for running. Dryer teaches a method of using gravity to encourage the body to move through space. After reading and watching Dryer's published material, it is clear to me that he uses the term "chi" as a marketing strategy. All things eastern - yoga, tai chi, etc - are hot selling points these days. Yes, Dryer states that he has practiced Qi Gong under a teacher. However, nowhere in the DVD or book does he teach about the movement of chi the body, its pathways or its functions. Dryer should have title his technique "Gravity Running" instead.
2. Dryer combines a commonly misunderstood Pilates technique (tightening the core), claming it to be engaging the "hara" or "dan tien / tan tien". While the dan tien is the chi energy center below the navel, never are core muscles used when working with this center. Tightening any muscles will take a person's awareness away from the energy and into the muscular contraction sensation. Contracting muscles may create heat which is often believed to be chi by many beginners, however heat and chi are very different.
In the original Pilates technique, as taught by Joseph Pilates, only the largest, deepest muscles of the core are "engaged" not tightened. This is more akin to placing the awareness in the core while using only the softest tension. Most people misunderstand Pilates and tighten the abdominal muscles which then causes improper posture. Watching the ChiRunning DVD and observing Danny Dryer's posture, it is clear that his posture is far from ideal. Improper core tension and running technique could possibly be the cause of this, however other causes could also exist.
3. Dryer teaches to tighten the core muscle to tilt the pelvis. This lengthens the lower back, thus straightening the spine and removing the natural curve. By straightening the natural curve, the natural spring in the spine is removed leading to possible spine injury. Watching the DVD clearly shows the postural flaw caused by this unnatural movement. I am very suprised to see the noticably poor posture that Dryer and his students showed in this instructional video.
Also, by tightening the core muscles, excess tension is created in the body that will interfere with the body's natural movement. By creating tension in the core, the entire body is adversely affected because the core is the body's center of gravity and the psoas muscles in the deep core extend into the legs and upper back and ribs. Tension in the core will also restrict the rig cage's ability to expand sufficiently to allow proper oxygen in the lungs.
4. Landing on the middle of the foot works against the anatomy of the foot. The arch of the foot acts like a rubber band that allows the foot to spring forward when running on the ball and toes. Running with the middle of the foot first causes the ball and head to hit at the same time, causes jarring sensations in the foot, ankle, and leg.
As seen in the photos in the book and in the DVD video, Dryer wears modern full cushion running shoes that elevate the heal. Ask any expert in anatomy and/or Olympic-level running will teach, these shoes are injuries waiting to happen. A person can only get an accurate anatomical running experience by learning to run barefoot. Barefoot running quickly shows us how to correctly run. We can then return to running in shoes in a safer, more natural and more energy efficient way.
5. Danny Dryer encourages the runner to tilt the body forward, taking the work off of the muscles and letting gravity act as a source of propulsion. Yes, this does work. However this style of running does not make effective use of the muscles and creates a very awkward experience that does not feel natural. Observe the running style of the world's greatest Olympic athletes and you will see all long distance runners stand erect while landing on the ball and toes of the feet.
--
If you have read this far into my review, you may be left looking for a solution. My best recommendation is to read the book Running Fast and Injury Free by Gordon Pirie. Pirie has held many world records and Olympic medals. He is one of few runners who, in my opinion, has perfected the art of running. His principles are based upon a lifetime of learning from top Olympic runners and beating nearly all of them or their records. Since age 14, Pirie ran with Olympic record holders. In addition, Dr. Nicholas Romanov's Pose Method of Running contains value insights into the physiology of running.
Above all else, since most of us grew up in shoes, we must re-teach ourselves to walk and run as the body's design intends. We must learn to move barefoot. Even if we choose to run every race in shoes, learning to run while barefoot is a necessary part of the process. So find a soft stretch of dirt, sand, grass, sidewalk or road and get started. Skip 99.9% of the theory and get back to the reality of running. Use your mind to observe your body and make corrections as you go. And above all else - have fun!』
(Chi Running delivers) 『This book was recommended to me by a trainer at a health club who runs marathons. I was skeptical at first, but I started to incorporate techniques described in the book into my running routine. I find that it has been helpful. I don't experience as much nagging pain as I used to. I think as I learn more about this approach, my running will improve. I recommend this book for avid runners.』
(Not what I was hoping for) 『This video is fine if you are looking for help with form and stretching exercises. I was hoping for more about the "chi" of running, and "chi" in general. I love the bits I have read about Chi Running, but I wish this was a video of the material in the book. Then maybe I wouldn't feel guilty when I see the book on my shelf (mostly) unread. I'm hoping there will be an audio version in the future.』
(Not so interesting!) 『I enjoyed the book for motivational purposes more than for any interesting revelation about running. I would not recommend it, it bored me at times.』 『
More than 24 million people run in the United States alone, but 65 percent will have to stop at least once this year because of injury. Still others will choose to run through the pain. But in this groundbreaking book, ultramarathoner Danny Dreyer teaches us the running technique he created to heal and prevent injuries and also to run faster, farther, and with much less effort at any age.
ChiRunning employs the deep power reserves in the core muscles of the trunk, an approach that grows out of such disciplines as yoga, Pilates, and t'ai chi. This excellent step-by-step program offers training principles and is easily learned.
Dramatically reduce your potential for injury Make knee pain and shin splints a thing of the past Greatly reduce post-run recovery time Create a safe and effective training program Make running any distance enjoyable whether you're a beginning runner or a seasoned competitor』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals) 『This is a book about the fundamentals it takes to succeed at any endeavor you wish to pursue. Tressel hits the nail on the head and I'm glad to see he steps up to the plate and shares his Christian faith. There are quotes and stories throughout the book you'll want to highlight and re-read. You don't need to be a football fan to appreciate the lessons found in the book. However, if you are a college football fan I highly recommend this. I'm a USC Trojan fan but after reading this book I'll be hoping Ohio State wins on Saturdays too (except when they play USC).』
(Gratitude, Humility and Hard Work) 『Gratitude, humility and hard work are the cornerstones of Jim Tressel's THE WINNERS MANUEL. Given to each of his OSU players at the start of new season, the manuel lays out Tressel's philosophy of life and coaching. Familiar, but not corny; straight forward, but not boring, Tressel always brings the discussion around to the importance of gratitude, humility and hard work, three virtues that he has built his career around and wants his OSU players to copy. The major weakness of the book is when he attempts to theologize and yet not offend in regard to Jesus. Still, its very hard to be overly critical of such a likeable public figure.』

You essentially have weeks and weeks worth of work-out routines in this book without having to do all the planning yourself or hiring a personal trainer to do it for you. I found the exercise plan to be a little too basic for me. The author teaches that you don't need to do exercises for each muscle group, but you can do exercises that work many different muscles all at the same time. That's probably a breath of fresh air for some, but not what I was hoping for.
I found the author to be little conceited. He seemed to spend a lot of time time mentioning his own accomplishments. The fact that this book was written by a man may not bother every one, but I think I might have appreciated it more if it was a woman teaching women.
I did learn a few new exercises that I hadn't done before, and I appreciated that all the exercises had photographs and detailed explanations.』
(I'm sore every single day) 『I've been working out for years and I thought the exercises looked pretty simple. I decided to stick with it and I'm definitely (and for the first time) seeing results. I'm not doing as much cardio as I used to and I've gained five pounds but my arms and abs are getting definition and my legs are looking awesome. But most importantly, I can tell that I've gained a lot of strength. I'm lifting heavier than ever before and I'm knocking out push ups like nothing. I've been using this routine for about 3 months now and working out 2-3 times a week. I'm also eating every three hours and taking at least two protein supplements daily. I think that anyone following this exercise routine and eating properly will see results.』
(it's kicking my butt!) 『I started exercising seriously 13 years ago, taking tae kwon do and pilates, then started running 3-5 times a week as well as spending 3 hours a week lifting and yet always felt like I wasn't getting the results for the amount of time I was putting in. I'm on week 4 in this book and even though the workouts are 30 minutes-45 minutes long (and I haven't started the intervals yet) I come home with feeling uplifted and with that good "all over sore muscle" feeling. I haven't tried the diet plan yet (although I've ordered some Whey protein powder for after work outs) and I probably enjoy a bit too much wine to see the fat drop off my abs as quickly but for the first time in a long while I feel like I'm getting a full body workout and I feel stronger. Looking forward to the day when I can finally do 10 full push ups and a chin up!』
(Repetitive, unorganized workout routine) 『I was very dissapointed when I purchased thie book. The workout routine formula is troublesome. Basically you have to create your own workout routine and there are timeconsuming bookfilling explanations that are tedious and worthless. I want my money back.』
(Personal Trainer...In book form) 『I have been training with a personal trainer three times per week for the last year (to the tune of $50 an hour). While many (many) years ago, I was a gymnast and a diver - I was not unfamiliar with exercise, but I WAS unfamiliar with a standard/typical weight room. I opted for a trainer because I wanted to work hard, I wanted results - and I didn't know what to do (AND I was intimidated) when I walked in to the weight room.
After a year with my trainer, I couldn't be more happier with the results. I have gone from 25% body fat to 13%. But the reality is, is that I need to be able to do this on my own, in the gym, without paying that kind of money for my trainer. So sad - but such is life. :)
I was looking for a book to help me do just this - transition from a personal trainer three times per week at over $500/mo - to doing it on my own.
I was amazed to find out that through the coaching and guidance of my trainer - that I had built up to doing the exact (advanced) workouts in this book over time.
I shared this book with my trainer who is now a football strength coach for a local university and he laughed. He said "It's not rocket science...It's just science". He agreed with all of the principles in this book and was quite familiar with the philosophies and techniques.
This is a great book to give you all the important background before heading to a gym or working with a trainer. Like anything in life - you have to work hard to get what you want. Start small - and continue to build - one step at a time. This book gives you the road map to do just that.
I love this book.』 『InThe New Rules of Lifting for Women, authors Lou Schuler, Cassandra Forsythe, and Alwyn Cosgrove present a comprehensive strength, conditioning, and nutrition plan destined to revolutionize the way women work out. All the latest studies prove that strength training, not aerobics, provides the key to losing fat and building a fit, strong body.
This book refutes the misconception that women will“bulk up” if they lift heavy weights. Nonsense! It’s tough enough for men to pack on muscle, and they have much more of the hormone necessary to build muscle: natural testosterone. Muscles need to be strengthened to achieve a lean, healthy look. Properly conditioned muscles increase metabolismand promote weight loss—it’s that simple.
The program demands that women put down the“Barbie” weights, step away from the treadmill, and begin a strength and conditioning regime for the natural athlete in every woman.
The New Rules of Lifting for Women, now in paperback, will change the way women see fitness, nutrition, and their own bodies.』

You can tell the authors are well versed in The Golfing Machine but put it in terms one can understand.
An excellent book.
Other books of note that are excellent is anything written by Jim Hardy, Hank Haney, Stan Utley or Dave Pelz.』
(Most Beneficial Golf Book since "Five Lessons"? Perhaps!) 『I've played to a low single digit handicap for years, and though I enjoyed the process of working on my own swing, I'd go through lengthy periods of time when I was searching for the key to my swing. Invariably, I'd find something, play well for a few rounds, and then enter another lull.
This year I decided to work with a Stack and Tilt instructor. Like many, I misunderstood a lot of the principles and had a lot of misconceptions about the swing, but with 20 or so PGA Tour players taking to it, I reconsidered. I'm glad I did - this year has been one of the most productive in my golf career. Not only do I know how to swing, I know how to fix it when things go awry.
Stack and Tilt is a fairly simple method of playing good golf, but nobody can do it alone. If you can't find an instructor nearby, this book does a great job as a stand-in (and if you can find an instructor, this book is a great reminder between lessons). The book's photos wonderfully illustrate the concepts and the instructions are simple, clear, and concise. Not only are the positions and ideas explained thoroughly, but PGA Tour pros contribute their "feelings" and "sensations" to help players who are helping themselves.
The book is more than a "here is how to swing the club" guide as well. The last third of the book is invaluable to golfers as it contains drills, common faults and their fixes, and much more. This book does more to actually help the golfer in 240 or so pages than most golf instructional books do in 400. It's not much of a stretch to call this potentially the most beneficial golf instruction book since Hogan's "Five Lessons."
Even if you're not a fan of the Stack and Tilt swing, I encourage you to pick up this book. Read the first chapter - I think you may change your mind. Implement some of the principles of the swing and, when you start beating your buddies, the book will pay for itself in no time. :-)』
(The best thing you can do to your golf swing) 『I had pre-ordered this book from amazon.com. Great idea to publish a book. These guys need to be put at the same level as Ben Hogan or above. They are the only ones that can make a difference in all golfers. Nothing else works out there I have tried them all. Even 3 years of lessons, every week did not get me to where I am now. Stack and tilt is the swing of the future and this book sets in stone. I switched to the S&T swing 3 months ago when I purchased the DVDs. The best thing I ever did. You just have to be patient and stick to the basics if you run into any problems. Otherwise, its the quickest and easiest way to become a great golfer.』
(A great learning tool) 『The book is all you could ever expect from a well-balanced set of golf lessons. Much better than the DVDs themselves. I recommend it to anyone looking for the definitive guide on the Stack and Tilt Golf Swing. If you can't learn the swing from this book, you can't learn it from anyone.』
(Will be one of the classics) 『Portions of this book equal or exceed anything ever written in terms of golf instruction. The way the book is put together with comments from golfers, the instructors and the photos far exceeds my expectation. Should be in every golf library. Will be one of the classics in the test of time. How can I get my copy signed?』 『An in-depth, full-color, step-by-step guide to the new golf swing that has taken the PGA Tour by storm
The traditional golf swing requires a level of coordination that few golfers have. So it's no surprise that, despite huge advances in club and ball technology, the average golf handicap in America has dropped by only one stroke since 1990. Maverick golf instructors Michael Bennett and Andy Plummer spent a decade researching the swing, eventually combining physiology and physics to create a method they dubbed the "Stack and Tilt." The result? Big-name pros like Mike Weir, Tommy Armour III, and Aaron Baddeley are already converts, and Bennett and Plummer are now two of the most soughtafter swing coaches in the game.
Making these breakthroughs available to everyone,The Stack and Tilt Swingis a handsome, fully illustrated, complete course, packed with more than two hundred full-color photographs that make it easy for golfers at all levels to adopt this radical yet simple approach. Analyzing why the traditional swing won't work for most golfers, the authors explain the importance of keeping the upper body stacked over the lower body, while the spine tilts toward the target during the backswing, greatly reducing the inconsistencies created by the old-fashioned approach. Enhanced with practice routines, a troubleshooting list, test cases, and point-by-point assistance, this is the breakthrough guide to golf's hot new secret weapon.』

(Good Book) 『This book has very good information on the muscle group that is used when doing a particular exercise. It works every muscle group you have, from the neck to your toes. The only downfall I see about this book is that its ONLY a informative book. Meaning, it doesnt tell you how many sets to do, the schedule you should go with, or how intense the exercise is. But it will be useful for the experienced lifter, but for the rookie like me, I would need a little more guidence. Im sure it will be more useful when I know what exercises and sets I have to work with.』
(Awesome!!!) 『If you are wanting to work out and need to know about almost any exercise you need this book. Shows you how and why. All you need to know is in this book.』
(Helpful for understanding science not body building) 『This book just details the muscles that get engaged when performing an exercise. It doesn't really talk about how many times we should workout in a week, what to eat, how to combine exercise etc...all that is in the book is just the exercises and a small explanation on the muscles that is engaged while performing the workout.
I would not recommend this to people trying to develop their body and needing a guide.』

(Great book with overall understanding of running tailored to women!) 『I have been running for just over a year and am a "newbie" in many ways. I have read a few other books on running but liked this one because it is tailored to female runners. With an overview of running, from nutrition to running injury free, I have found this book to be an asset.』
(Excellent Book) 『This book is a great read. It contains very specific information on how to begin running, how to choose the proper shoe, and how to identify/treat regular aches and pains and actual injuries. Overall health is a central theme in this book, and most of the advice is common sense.
There are running plans for beginner, intermediate, and marathon runners as well as strength training exercises to work the muscles that support all the running muscles.
Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. This has given me a different outlook on running, and I am far more motivated than ever - amazing as I have always hated running. I'm so excited about it even my hubby is getting curious. Highly recommended.』

This has helped me understand many things about my body and its adaptation to running. I've already seen my times improve. One point I will make is that the information may be overwhelming to a beginning runner or a non-runner who is considering the sport; however, for anyone who has been running seriously even for a few years, you will learn a lot and should be able to make some adjustments right away. The only people who may not be too keen on it are the makers of nutritional supplements and some sports drinks, whose effectiveness the book debunks. Another point is that I read this book on the Kindle, and some of the charts don't reproduce as well on its screen. I suspect that the paper version would alleviate that problem.』

(Unique running book) 『Has things in it no other running book contains. Lots of useful tips for staying healthy during serious training for runs. Highly recommended especially if you have ever had a running injury (like most of the rest of us).』
(Of little value) 『This books fails to deliver on the promise of the title. Although the authors are scientists, their use of science to provide rationale for training methods is weak. For example, they cite Dr. So and So at Famous U. did a study to measure x, y and z, but then they fail to explain how you, the runner, can alter your running to take advantage of the results. There is only one recommended workout in the entire book, and it is woefully vague. The book is very repetitive with a lack of informative graphics. It was disappointing that it had no impact on my training or performance.』
(Good overall) 『The book had good information and was a big help in some areas. However, the authors simplified some explanations a little to much for my taste. Overall the book is excellent. I recommend Runner's World The Runner's Body to any runner who want's to further their knowledge on the sport.』 『

The chapters are uncomplicated and it is easy to quickly reference all of the muscles and their actions. I really like the chapters on Arms, wrists and hands and also knees and thighs. Every illustrated stretch has a box beneath with a detailed color picture of the anatomy, all muscles are labeled clearly. You can quickly sort out any confusion you may have between similar sounding muscles. I get my Teres Major and minor muscles mixed up for example or my Flexor carpi radialis brevis and longus. A quick look in this book will set you straight in a short space of time.
Generally 2 pages are dedicated to each stretch, one page has the illustrations the other page has three short paragraphs, no more than several lines in each paragraph though. "Technique", "Muscles stretched" (most stretched and least stretched), and "Commentary" which gives you modifications, variations and various tips on deepening the stretch. The information is very brief. If you need more detail on muscles involved, or origins and insertions, this is not the book for you, explanations are limited to muscle action and pictures.
This is a very nice, simple and uncomplicated book, if you want a little more detail I would suggest spending around $5 more and getting "The anatomy of stretching" by Brad Walker (very similar titles)or at least review both books before buying to see which suits you best.
At the end of each chapter of "Stretching Anatomy" all muscles are listed down the left side of the page and the actions across the top of the page. Ticks symbols show the action of each muscle. This book is a useful tool for anyone reviewing muscles for their anatomy exams, massage therapists, fitness instructors, physiotherapists who are just starting out etc. The stretches shown for arms and wrists are my favorite. Whether you are a yoga instructor looking for a few new ways to warm up your students before their Asana practice (a good deal of the stretches shown remind me of yoga poses such as Janu Sirsasana, Baddah konasana, paschimottanasana, or you are a massage therapist educating your clients on self care, or an athlete looking for information on increasing flexibility this 143 page book is very handy as a reference book or as a guide to design your own stretching sequences.

(Excellent, clear and helpful manual) 『I checked this out at the library on the advice of some bellydancing friends, and I found it so handy I made sure to order my own copy.
It's wonderfully clear and concise: No treatises on theory, just brief descriptions of what the various muscle sets do, and the excellent, large, totally clear and well-labeled diagrams of every stretch (and then later of the various muscle sets at rest).
It makes it ridiculously easy to understand what's happening when I stretch or dance, and also to identify the aches and pains I sometimes get as an active person.
Each section handles a different part of the body i.e. neck, hips, knees and thighs, arms, wrists, so the stretches are easy to find -- you don't have to remember the names of the muscles you want to stretch, just flip through the appropriate section. Each stretch lists which muscles it acts primarily and secondarily upon. Each stretch has any appropriate warnings or other notes, such as positions to enhance the stretch or make it easier for your limitations.
In no part of the book are the stretches limited to contortionist's poses or advanced yoga-type positions. Stretches are offered on the most basic level for every body part as well as more advanced options. You're sure to find a simple, accessible stretch for any muscle group.』
(Awesome!) 『This book is a perfect way of showing techniques for people whom don't know how to stretch properly. Majority of the aches and pains people get are from tight, forgotten about muscles. Stretching Anatomy takes care of not only illustrations, but a description of each stretch, how long to hold the stretch and gives helpful hints to assist in getting the best possible stetch out of each muscle. All in all, this is a great book, and there is nothing I would change about it. I use my book all the time!』
(Awesome Visuals) 『A need for anyone who is interesed in the body, exersise and health, highly reccomened!』
(Great tool!) 『This book has a ton of really great info on stretching some of those hard to reach spots. I love knowing what muscles I am using as well, it helps me identify where my stretch is really going!』 『See inside every stretch--and maximize flexibility!Stretching Anatomywill arm you with the knowledge to increase range of motion, supplement training, enhance recovery, and maximize efficiency of movement. You'll also gain a detailed understanding of how each stretch affects your body.
Stretching Anatomyis like having an X-ray of each stretch, only better. Not only do you see full-color illustrations of the muscles in action, but you also find out how changes in position can alter the muscle emphasis and difficulty and how variations can improve safety and effectiveness.
Each exercise includes detailed instruction on how to stretch, when to stretch, primary and secondary muscle emphasis, and which muscles are activated for support. Stretching programs provide three levels of difficulty, including light stretching that can be used as a warm-up or to aid in recovery from soreness or injury. And summary movement tables show how to customize stretching programs to focus on key problem areas.
Whether it is increased flexibility or reduced muscle soreness or tension,Stretching Anatomyallows you to see and feel the benefit of proper stretching technique.』
