The flippin MP4 that FLIP uses is absolutely proprietary and only works in their flippin' limited software. If they had advertised they were using a proprietary version of mp4...I NEVER WOULD HAVE BOUGHT THIS!』

Video's or still photos can be put together with easy to use flip software. This video camera is so compact, it can be placed in your pocket. The 120 minutes of video is more than sufficient. The battery holding charge is good, and you can use regular batteries if needed. There is also a convenient electrical outlet adapter charger available.』
(The Flip - Simple, with all the good and bad that comes with that) 『Just got the Flip Ultra HD and filmed a video interview with a band after a concert, as well as some random stuff around the apartment.
The Good: This thing is dead simple to use, and the quality is really good, so you can't go wrong there. If you want to film something on the go, or use a tripod for some static shots, and then immediately combine some of the shots you take or just send them right along to YouTube or someone's email, you can't go wrong.
The Bad: The software sucks if you want to do anything other than above. Not only that, but if you play around with the videos before deciding what you want to do with them (pull them off the Flip and put 'em on your harddrive; try to edit in another program; etc.) good luck to you, because you've just screwed the pooch. The Flip stops recognizing its own videos. The software can do almost nothing in terms of editing beyond the aforementioned combining of videos. Getting the videos (.MP4 format) into other programs is often a hassle. The HD is enough to require a fairly up-to-date system in order to watch the videos smoothly and fool around with them.
Summary: The Flip's simple and fun. If you're a techy, you can probably figure out work arounds for the problems, and if you do so, then you've got a formidable portable camera. If you're not very technologically adept and you have in the whispers of a thought that you might want to do more than just combine two videos (what if a shot comes out slightly wrong, or a random sound screws up what you were going for, or any other number of issues that you want to edit out easily?), then avoid the Flip. There are other options that are more versatile than the Flip.
Helpful Tip: If you do like the Flip, download Google's Picassa. It may not be the best software ever, but it's got a leg up in some areas and is pretty easy to get the hang of, as well as being free. Personally, it's what I use currently, but I'll definitely be investing in something more robust in the near future. Good Quality and easy to use!) 『I did a ton of research and at first and wasn't sure what to choose between the $200 - $600 market. I bought the Flip MinoHD for the simple reason that it was small and portable and able to capture the moments you'd miss with a larger more expensive camcorder getting it out of it's case and turning it on. The most important factor in me determining what to buy was ease of use and what kind of software comes with it. During my evaluations, so many reviews of camcorders said something about being a Mac user and/or downloading additional software and converting it from one format to another or not being able to produce a feature film with a $200 camcorder.
That is not at all what I wanted. My wife is pregnant with twins and due shortly so I wanted something I could carry in my pocket to capture those precious moments and quickly/easily upload to my computer, edit, email to in-laws/parents, burn to a dvd or share to Facebook with a few clicks of the mouse. I will say that I am not too software savvy but you literally plug this in to the computer and the software takes over. It is fantastic how easy and idiot proof it is (take my word on it). I took a three minute video of my wife ten minutes after getting it delivered to my house and had sent it out to my in-laws and relatives less than 20 minutes after UPS dropped it off at my house (it was already charged). That is honestly how easy it is to use.
If you want a portable HD (720p) camcorder that is smaller than my Blackberry, that records up to 120 minutes that you can easily (software included with the device) upload and edit and then send to anyone, looks and sounds good too for a little over $200, then this is the product for you. I bought many things off Amazon but this is my first product review. I've never been so impressed with anything I've bought from either here or Ebay and thought I should sing it's praises because it rocks.
I don't think you'd be disappointed with what you get. I can't wait for my babies to get here so I can post some top notch videos for our friends/family to see. I'd at least advise looking at the Flip Mino video online that shows the features and ease of use. That's what sold me. Good luck!

(Impressed with the camera... and the company!) 『I've been looking for a camcorder for a long time and finally settled on the Flip due to good reviews and decent price.
Two days after I received my brand new Flip Mino HD, I started having issues with it. During one recording the camera totally froze up on me and I couldn't shut it off. I held down the power button several times with no response. I finally plugged it into my computer and that appeared to reset it. The following day while recording, the camera completely powered off on me without warning and I lost the video.
After reading some of the reviews here it was apparent that this model had some problems. So I went straight to the source and called up Flip. First off, I was impressed that they were answering their phones on a Sunday afternoon. The person I spoke to was very friendly and helpful. She told me that the product had JUST come out and I had gotten an item from the first lot, which they seemed to be having some issues with. The problems I described were exactly what others had been having issues with too. She told me to return it and that she'd send me a new one (from a different lot) in its place. Within minutes of the call I received an e-mail with the instructions for the return and a pre-paid shipping label.
About a week after dropping the package off, I received a box in the mail with a new camcorder plus an unexpected freebie--an action mount that looks like it's about a $16 value. I thought that was a very nice addition for my trouble.
I haven't yet had a chance to use the new camcorder and I expect that the issue won't continue. If it does, I will expect the same quality service from Flip Video. Regarding the camera itself, I love it. It's very easy to use--completely intuitive and doesn't require a boatload of instructions. The software is simple too. I think this camera will fit my needs quite nicely.』

(Kodak Zi8 - Flimsy usb, impossible firmware update) 『I was disappointed in the Zi8. The interface was terrific but the usb was so flimsy, it was a complete pain. I could not get the images to show on either of 2 computers and was unable to manage the firmware update. I returned it. Amazon was terrific.』

The widescreen aspect ratio, compared to the old format is awsome. I can't get over how crisp and clear the videos are on my HD tv. The low light videos of my daughters birthday are great. Since it slips into my shirt pocket, i take it everywhere, and now have lots of videos that I would never have taken with the older, larger camcorder. No sound problem, as the sound works great. My advise is buy it, you wont' regret it for the money. A more expensive camcorder will not get you a better picture, just a better zoom lens. This lens is fine for what it's intended for.』

It is my first return trough Amazon after years of purchasing all kinds of stuff online. The camera freezes all the time, the power button doesn't work 90% of the time, so the only way to turn this camera was by removing the battery. I could not download videos into my PC. I contacted Kodak customer service, i installed the software upgrades and the camera still freezed all the time. I even bought a new Kodak SD memory card thinking this could have been the problem, and nothing got solved. Kodak customer service suggested that I got the camera exchanged. And yes, I am exchanging it for a Flip or something else!』

The support at Kodak waa non existent but they do have my email three times and I think they got the serial numbe 4 times. But alas no support. But, the 2nd one I got was no good. It could take videos, and review videos within the unit itself, but the transfer of the videos to a PC hung up all the time. I thought the first one was a good deal, but then it made up for itself when I bought the second one and it did not work for me. Finally, after many months of thinking I bought a pile of junk, Pure Video put a firmware upgrade on its web site. I downloaded the update, and now the thing works better than my first Flip camcorder. It takes decent video even in birthday candle light. I received the camcorder on November 20th (two days!!) and am very pleased with this - considering come reviewers alleging long wait times for delivery.
The professionally packaged shipment I received contained: the camcorder (a given), wireless controller, compact power adapter (TO CHARGE THE BATTERY), AC cable, battery pack, component cable, stereo video cable, USB cable, software (CD-ROM), wrist strap (attached), and a fairly large and thorough instruction manual. I received the Kingston 8 GB SDHC Flash Memory Card SD4/8GBET FREE with this camcorder. I also purchased the 3 Year Service Plan for Electronics for an additional $59.99.
I was concerned the camera would be too small, but I feel it is a perfect size (in a woman's hands) - even for a larger cowboy's hand. The size will make it easier to take video around the ranch - and on horseback.
The quality appears excellent - not at all like the 'cheap, flimsy' appearance of the JVC Everio camcorders. I'm now charging the battery and once I've tried the camcorder, I'll update this review. (Camcorder dead on arrival, Canon refused to fix it) 『I purchased this camcorder for my vacation overseas. When I first charged the battery, I received the "Cannot communicate with battery" message. Eventually, the camcorder failed completely. Now being 5000 miles from home, I am left with a busted $600 camcorder. I contacted Canon both in the US and overseas, they both refused to fix it as it is related to battery They also don't want to fix it due to jurisdiction issue. Anyway they both refused to fix it, so I have no choice but to return it. Thank you Amazon for your return policy!!! I know I won't be buying any Canon SLR in the future.』

Mix it with right video converter like say "Any Video Converter" and you got video for any device you want with really manageable size(though the native ones are too big).

(Great little camera) 『Despite the relatively small sensor compared to other canon model, the picture quality is great. Colors are sharp and so real. The features are really very nice and diverse. The camera size is relatively small but I did not have any problem holding it steady. In contrary to some other opinions I find the optical image stabilization effective compared to other Sony models. The low light performance is good. I had the canon HG10 with the larger sensor and I shot indoor low light footage with both cameras to see if the small sensor of the HF200 will affect its low light performance but I was really impressed. I could not tell a difference. Of course the very low light scenes are grainy but that's what you expect from cameras in this price category and even from higher price cameras.』

I am simply posting to let other potential buyers know that this particular camera is not suitable for motorsports or any activity with sever vibration or shaking. No matter what the settings are, no matter how you adjust the camera, the image you get is not usable and def not worthy of price paid. (don't even bother) 『i was looking for a video camera and I was between the Flip HD and the Kodak zi8. I decided to go for the zi8. I got it yesterday and in summary: it is a piece of junk. It is my first return trough Amazon after years of purchasing all kinds of stuff online. The camera freezes all the time, the power button doesn't work 90% of the time, so the only way to turn this camera was by removing the battery. I could not download videos into my PC. I contacted Kodak customer service, i installed the software upgrades and the camera still freezed all the time. I even bought a new Kodak SD memory card thinking this could have been the problem, and nothing got solved. Kodak customer service suggested that I got the camera exchanged. And yes, I am exchanging it for a Flip or something else!』

It would not upload correctly into the computer for editing or even reviewing the image. Compared to a flip with its non sensical approach to the upload this software hardware combination should have never gone out the door at Kodak.
The support at Kodak waa non existent but they do have my email three times and I think they got the serial numbe 4 times. But alas no support. I bought this camera for a 8 months business trip to Hong Kong. I have purchased 2 extra battery pack BP-809 for it so I have a total of 3 batteries. After 2 weeks, the camcorder start having problem recognizing the batteries, at first I can fix the problem by switching between the pack, 3 days ago it won't even take any of my batteries! I call Canon locally in Hong Kong and they said they will have to charge me just to LOOK at it, repair cost extra!!! I am very disappoint at Canon, I have been a customer forever, I have a 40D, 50D, 5DmkII and tons of Lens from you guys and the quality has been superb. The first digi cam I bought and I've got problem from it in less than a month and Canon won't even try to help. I am stuck here in Asia, I need this camera to do my job and if I ship it back to US it will cost me a lot of money and time... Beside, I really hate the idea of repairing and crack open an expensive camera in it's first month, I even called Canon USA back home and ask if they can help... After an hour wait time with an international phone call, the answer is very disappointing: unless I can ship the camera back, there is nothing they can do... I don't understand it, I have a service center less than a mile away, and yet they still trying to tell me I am stuck... How's that for customer service?』

(Great camera overall. Be aware of requirements) 『I'm not going to review the camrea, because it's a great product from canon and it is a nice upgrade from regular digital video. I just want to comment on few "issues" people have with the camera and you need to consider before buying it: + Quality in low light. Most cameras perform better in regular light. In low light, the video is grainy and not nice. You need a LIGHT if you are planning to use it mostly in low light. Canon has some but they are quite expensive. + Computer edit. You need a newer computer for playback. To edit it will be also faster in a new computer. You also need a special video editor to edit the HD files. + Slow transfer to computer. It's slow because of USB 2.0, but you can transfer it as you shoot the video, instead of doing it all at once. I believe they don't added firewire because it's not widely supported in most computers. + Battery life. Yes, it last around 1 hours, so? Get another one. Most product use lcd displays, replacing optical viewfinder. This makes them smaller and compact. Most camcorders will last the same. + HD Video + Blu Ray = Great videos. You should use HD with Blu Ray, not DVDs to get the most of it. + This is not a digital camera. Don't expect great pictures. The technology to combine video and photos is still not here.
I am amazed people complain about little things when it has nothing to do with the camera. Why do you spend this kind of money if you don't want to spend a few more in accessories? In order to use a product you need to meet some requirements AND GET EDUCATED. One of the reviewer gave it 2 stars because he can't even read the manual.』

I can shoot a video. Go home and back it up to my computer in minutes. And erase the video on my camera. Nowadays hard drives are cheap. Get a terabyte drive for about [...]. or so. Who cares if it's the fastest on the planet. It's a place to store you high def videos.
I don't burn to Blue ray. It's too expensive still. So I convert my hi-def video to Mpeg2 and burn the result to DVD. The quality is outstanding! I have a [...]OPPO dvd player with built in "up-conversion" and the resulting videos I make "pop" off of my HDTV screen.
You've heard by now that yesterdays computers bog down handling hd camera files. That's true. If you don't have a dual-core processor and a decent computer you will get frustrated. But... one day you WILL have a better computer. And the same files that frustrate you today will be easy to use tomorrow... so don't dispare.
I have a vision too... that more and more people will buy the HD camcorders and store their precious moments to a hard drive. And someone will build an inexpensive interface that allows you to connect your terabyte drive directly to your HD TV and control it with your TV remote. No more conversions. Just watch your HD videos with the push of a button. They are working on it. Maybe a year or so away. You just watch.
I have posted a link to a youtube video made with my camera. This was done in subdued lighting in a church standing about thirty feet away. The anti-shake is turned on. The video is cruched down to be able to upload it to youtube. Still... for the setting, I think the quality is great!
