I chose it because I generally hear good things about LG, had to have one that could stream Netflix, and the price ($168 at the time) at Amazon was unbeatable.
The bottom line is this player does what I had wanted it to do when I purchased it, and I'm totally satisfied with my choice. I have it connected via HDMI to a Sharp 52" 1080p for video and my Bose Lifestyle 28 for audio (digital coax from tv to Bose); internet connection is via cat-5 to a wall drop. After a couple months of operation, my minor gripes:
1. When streaming Netflix, there is about a 2 second delay after I un-pause before I get audio. If I'm watching a dvd, the delay is smaller but still noticeable. I am going to connect player straight to the Bose Lifestyle with an optical cable to see if that helps.
2. When selecting to play a Netflix video, sometimes I'll get a message telling me my internet connection is slow and I'll experience frequent pausing during playback. If I back out of Netflix and then come right back in, usually it goes away and I get flawless playback (except for problem #1 above).
3. For whatever reason, the volume level of the audio coming from a blu-ray dvd is awfully low. It's not to the point I cannot hear it or even close, but when I am watching a blu-ray I'll have to put the volume on my Bose up to "50" or so when I would normally have it on "30" to watch something else at similar volume.
Some may criticize the lack of wireless capability but so far I've found wired connections are much better for streaming video over the internet, particularly if you're expecting to stream HD content from Netflix (which this player does). Even if it had wireless, I would use a wired connection, which is exactly what I'm doing in another room with my Roku player.
This is a good player with features I really like. It's not perfect but I'm very happy with it and it's definitely enhanced my home entertainment quality. If you have a Netflix subscription and you haven't yet made the jump to blu-ray, this is a no-brainer.』

But I've already got an Xbox360 hooked up to my home theater, and several PCs available as well, and all of them can handle any video streaming needs I may have. All I really needed was a Blu-Ray player that would do a really nice job playing Blu-Ray discs and my old DVDs. Thanks to the new players, the price on this one has really dropped, so I pounced.
I had one small glitch hooking it up. My HDTV is an older Sony 34" CRT that handles 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i, but not 1080p. I hooked the Blu-Ray player up through my Onkyo receiver using an HDMI cable, which then handles the connection to the TV. When I told the BDP-S360 to use the HDMI connection, all I got was a black screen. I ended up having to use the composite video cables that come with the player to get a picture, and then told the player to use 720p output. Everything then worked fine. So something in the handshake between the TV, receiver, and player thought 1080p was supported, but once forced to 720p everything was fine.
Disc loading times aren't bad, taking about the same time as booting up my Xbox360 or turning on my 400-disc DVD changer, so I really didn't notice them. The picture, even at only 720p, is FANTASTIC, showing details I just never noticed before and really enhancing the picture. An example here is that with Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure (yes, most of my viewing is for the kids), the pixie dust effects on the DVD have a lot more "glow" to them, while on the Blu-Ray they are individual sparks that don't cover the background as much. The detail improvement is really impressive.
Updating the firmware was pretty trivial. With the Xbox360 and a Wii I already have ethernet running to the entertainment center along with a hub, so I just hooked up another cable and it downloaded and upgraded easily.
So far I'm very happy. If you really want video streaming you may need to look elsewhere, or if you need a WiFi network connection, but since I did not need either this was a perfect fit at a very good price.』

(Great Blu Ray Player for the Price) 『I bought this player after my upconverting dvd player's remote quit working, which gave me a good excuse to upgrade. For the price this player can't be beat. The picture quality is awesome, the upconverting looks good, and the sound is great too. The menus, setup, and features are very user friendly. The start up times are good, and I don't notice the long wait time some have mentioned. It does lack certain features which would be nice, such as the Netflix streaming capability. Although I have a Netflix account, I would have to set it up through wi-fi (not available with this player), and I don't think I would use it that frequently for it to be an issue.
My main concern in choosing a blu ray player was it's compatibility with recordable dvd's (dvd+r or dvd-r). I have alot of home movies on standard recordable discs and wanted to make sure that I would be able to view them on the player. This player does play my standard recorded dvd's without any problems. The issue involving the player not continuing the movie if you press stop as opposed to pause must be a disc issue. I stopped a few movies, even turned off the player, and the movie started from where it stopped. Also, the remote not having an eject button, I still need to get up to remove the disc so this isn't an issue for me.
If you want a player with great picture quality and has basic features for a great price, then I don't think you can go wrong with this player.』

No region free on this model.) 『 When I bought this unit, I did it because of two main reasons: it could be hacked for region-free play and it could stream from my PC, as a media center. The latter I haven't yet tried, but I am very much frustrated about the former attribute. Apparently, if you buy the BD390 or the BD370 in the US, you don't get a firmware that allows you to change region and it blocks the hack.
As I haven't yet tried the streaming capability I can't say nothing about it, but let's hope it works as such.
At the time I didn't buy Pioneer and JVC models, or even the Oppo, all of them having much better image quality. But I felt I was getting a better deal from LG. If you also think so, think again, as you are not. AFAIk, right now only Oppo allows a firmware hack to change DVD region and make it region-free.』
(Better than the other 3 I've tried) 『I've tried the BD 370 and two Samsung players which are similarly priced to this unit, and this is definitely the best choice. It works remarkably fast and is very responsive. I have seen people complain about networking issues but I had none, even though I use Apple Airport Express to create my wireless network. The only trouble I had with set up is that I could not find a way to use capital letters when entering my network passcode. Once I changed my code to just lowercase and numbers, there wasn't a problem.
Streaming quality for Netflix is a little hit or miss. Generally, if it says the network connection is too slow I tell it to ignore that, and the network quality suddenly jumps to good. Don't know why that happens, but I haven't yet had any trouble watching a Netflix stream.
I use Playback as a third-party UPnP on my Mac to connect wierlessly to the BD player and have not had any trouble. It can play my home movies, show photos from iPhoto and play all of my mp3 music from iTunes. It has worked flawlessly, though the menu system and the playback options mean that I'm more likely to just play music over Airtunes directly from my computer since the workflow is much easier. Perhaps Apple should start creating BD player menus. . .
I have had one fairly major complaint which has so far applied to all Blu Ray players. I cannot get the sound to synchronize with the video. I use the digital output to go to my HT and HDMI to my Sanyo projector (video looks great at 103"). The video is consistently faster than than the audio, whether I'm playing SD DVDs, BDs or even Netflix. This appears to be a very common complaint in all of the forums I've visited trying to find a solution, but have yet to come up with one - Anyone with an idea I'd love to hear it!

(Really enjoying the Netflix streaming) 『I bought this player for its Netflix and home media video streaming. I have it connected to my 42" standard def plasma TV that I'd been using mostly to watch DVDs and some HD OTA programming I capture on a PC. Before buying the player, playback of that OTA programming was a hassle because it involved attaching my laptop to my TV and fiddling with resolution setting each time I want to watch something. I'd occasionally watch Netflix streaming on my laptop, either connected to that TV or just on my 22" desktop LCD monitor, but had been unimpressed with it (probably because because it's hard for streaming to look good sitting 1.5' away from a 1920x1200 resolution screen which is going to expose every digitization artifact).
I'm really liking the player and its Netflix support. I'd been plowing my way through "Lost" on Netflix rental disks and now I'm watching them streaming at an even faster rate. The picture quality (now 8' away from that plasma TV) is generally excellent, although Netflix will occasionally drop the resolution down from (what they call) "HD" to something noticeably worse. I have a Verizon FiOS connection, so it's unlikely that the bandwidth limitation is at my end, but who knows how many places between my house and the Netflix servers might be getting bogged down. (Welcome to the cloud.) At the lower bandwidth, pretty serious digitization artifacts show up in fast-moving scenes. This is almost certainly due to the limitations of the data, not the player itself. It'd be nice if there were some sort of button that allowed me to say "Hey, maybe that bandwidth problem was transient; please try to go to HD again".
I didn't know this before I bought the player, but wasn't surprised to find out that it also can play back audio files off my PC, which is convenient. If it also had support for Pandora and Internet streaming (I listen to various actual radio stations via Shoutcast and work and in another room at home using the Logitech Squeezebox Boom), I'd be really happy. Maybe eventually it will. Hulu support would be great too, but I haven't heard of any devices that do that yet.
I haven't actually put a Bluray disk in the player yet and don't expect I will for some time (no point really, since it's connected to an SD TV). It plays regular DVDs fine though.
The one serious gripe I have with the player is that when playing back video files from my PC, there's no fast-forward capability. This means I must run a time-consuming commercial scan and remove package over my recorded video files before watching them.』

I've no real comparison to other Blu-Ray players. This one had excellent top reviews, and CAN share a controller with the new TV.
I have seen some "artifacting." That might be from the Blu-Ray compression, or the player, or the TV. Who knows? Only the most exasperating critic would object. Blu-Ray movies play with exceptional clarity. I think it is POSSIBLE that the up-conversion of standard DVDs may be better than the 18 month old Sony I gave to daughter, but, boy, that would be hard to say with certainty without some kind of video tests. If you have a library of standard DVDs, this player will do very well by them as it upconverts to 1080p.
My only disappointment is the wireless streaming. The player is Wireless N. My household is Mac, Apple Airport Extreme. I have an AppleTV which works very, very well on Wireless N set at the 5ghz feed.
The LG player will not run at 5ghz. So I had to set the Airport Extreme (temporarily) at 2.4ghz. Then I had to take down the password to mate the wireless signal to the LG player. When I did that, they found each other, and the result was inadequate.
I tried streaming a NetFlix instant movie over the 2.4ghz Wireless, and it looked like really, really bad YouTube, and the Player gave me a message that I had a really slow internet connection.
Maybe really slow for Korea, but I have the fastest cable internet (25 Mbps) our local provider offers. So the message about "slow" was really about the 2.4 ghz Wireless.
Started over with an ethernet cable dragged to the Blu-Ray Player, with much, much better results.
I'm happy with this player, and think it should definitely be on your "short list."』

If you have a reciever with hdmi you don't need this blu ray player... buy the cheaper version without the 7.1 analog outputs.
If you don't like tweaking your equipment and you have lots of cash, buy a new reciever. It took a little extra effort to set up the player to use only the video from the hdmi, and use the sound from the analog outputs. Then you have to adjust all of your speaker and subwoofer levels again. The extra effort is worth it for those of us with a budget.
For under two hundred dollars, this blu ray player does all you need it to do and the picture and sound quality is great. I upgraded the firmware before I ever used it and I have not had a single problem playing any disc. I don't have any comparison to other blu ray players, but I was supprised how well it upscales my old dvd's. It is better than my old harman/kardon dvd 38 at upscaling. I am able to watch standard dvd's on a 108 inch screen and still tolerate the video quality.
I personally don't care about the youtube, bd live, viera cast etc. I only use the player to watch movies. I have fiddled around with it a little, but it wouldn't make or break my decision to buy this unit. My computer is connected through my home theater system and video projector and I don't need most of it anyway, and watching poor quality video from youtube on a large screen is unbearable.
I have read many of ther other reviews and agree with some of the other complaints about the player( display, remote, etc). All of which I consider very minor. If you are extremely picky you will probably never be satisfied. If you want to watch high def movies in 7.1 surround sound without a hdmi equipped reciever, I highly recommend this unit.』
(BD60 + Additional features = BD80, worth buying) 『I did lots of research and finalized on BD80, for which I am very happy. I did looked into all the reviews on BD60 in addition to BD80 reveiw, basically this player has few additional features to the BD60 player , which has good rating all over the sites. BD80 is nothing but BD60 + additional features. The key additional feature ,what I feel are 7.1 Analog output, playing Divx formats and Playback Information Window.
The one I bought had 1.6 profile, after connecting to Internet, it automatically detected and offered firmware update and updated it to 2.1 profile.
Amazon on Demand picture quality is really amazing. The only con , I can see is Netfilx connectivity is missing, however , I assume, we can expect that in near future.. along with any firmware update...

(Quirky features) 『I was expecting more from Sony - setup was simple enough but i found the player harder to use than earlier Sony DVD models -maybe this is just the price of BlueRay technology. If you only want to play a disk, ok the picture quality was fine. But functions like fast forward were unusable for DVDs, normally fast forward shows the action speeded up, but here there was a pause and a sequence of jerky jumps ahead without any continuity of motion - you couldn't even tell how fast you were forwarding, one second, two seconds, per jump.... Slow motion was similarly problematic. The startup screen was confusing even to someone who has used a half dozen dvd players and recorders in the past. I was hoping for the player to be just like a DVD player that could also play BlueRay disks.』
(Works well) 『I am happy with this Sony BDP-S560 Blu-ray player. I have only had this player for a short time and have only watched a few DVDs but the Dark Night video is amazing, (it was filmed with I-Max cameras). It does seem like the recent newer movies in Blu-ray have a better HD picture quality than the older movies converted to HD Blu-ray. I didn't realize that if you are already receivig 1080i or 1080p over the air, Satellite, or via cable, it dosen't get any better than that. Blu-ray HD is 1080p. This player performs well and has plenty of great reviews by others. The built-in menus are very nicly layed out. I have not tried the on-line BD-Live feature yet but the Wi-Fi connection to my home wireless network came up and connected automatically and very easily. The DVD Upscaling of existing standard DVDs did not make them look any better in my opinion on the couple that I viewed. The picture quality appeared to hot or over-driven, this could possibly be improved by adjusting the DVD player settings and/or HDTV picture settings for an improvement in picture quality while playing standard DVDs. I cannot speak on the sound quality as I am not utilizing a full surround sound system with my Samsung 52" LCD, 850, Touch-of-color HDTV,(exelcent HDTV). I would recommend this Blu-ray DVD player to anyone, I am happy with it.』

(Works as advertised) 『As someone who does extensive research on any product before purchasing and noticing the extensive positive reviews on this player, I was very much looking forward to getting it and giving it a spin to see what all the hype was about.
The first thing that got my attention was the build quality of the Oppo and its added accessories, which in my opinion surpassed almost all the components in this price range.
The second thing is that after setting up the Oppo, which proved to be a surprisingly easy task considering all this machine is capable of, I was not at all disappointed with what I saw and heard.
I proceeded to try all the varying disc that I currently have in my possession, including SACD's, original DVD's, DVD-R's, red book CD's, etc, and they all played with very little fuss and played exquisitely while doing it.
As mentioned before what was surprising to me was the ease of which this player was able to setup and operate; the user manual and the user interface was very straight forward and simple, especially considering that some of my other components were and still is an absolute pain to deal with but otherwise works well.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this product, especially if u have any SACD's or DVD audio disc lying around.
One very slightly negative comment is that while trying to play "Hellboy II" it got stuck at the point of loading but after turning power off and then back on again this problem was no more, but other than that absolutely no issues.』
(This Oppo Has To Be The Best Bargain Of The Decade) 『I was hesitant to replace my expensive Denon 2900 Universal Player, but I wanted to get into Blu_Ray. I read all of the reviews, and noted that Home Theater magazine rated the Oppo BDP-83 Universal Player as their Product of the Year. I admit that I found it difficult to believe that a player priced at $499.00 would be able to outperform my Denon and offer Blu-Ray. Well, I'm a Believer now. This player has so many Bells and Whistles for the price, it is unbelievable. DVD, SACD, DVD-Audio, Blu_Ray, whatever you play on it, the Oppo performs flawlessly. I'm convinced that if the Oppo was sold in brick and mortar stores, it would easily cost twice as much.
This player comes beautifully packaged in a reusable, cloth shopping bag. Also included was a Spears and Munsil Calibration Disc and an Aix Records Audio Calibration and Music Sampler disc. All needed cables are included in an attractive box. This is one classy component. It is very easy to set-up, with a Quick Start on-screen menu. Later, you can use the extensive calibration menus to further refine sound and picture.
If you are in the market for a Blu-Ray Universal Player, I truly believe you cannot do any better than the Oppo for any price. The Sound and Vision Reviewer picked this as his new Reference Player, and even Consumer Reports picked this as the best Blu-Ray Player of the year. I agree.』

It discovers that there is a firmware upgrade after communicating with the mothership and asks if I want to upgrade. If you say no, the same screen comes up at the next power on. I gave up and upgraded the firmware. Now there is blockbuster and youtube on the selections (who cares? all I need is netflix that's the reason I purchased this model).
I decided to watch a dvd. The movie starts but after may be 5mins, the scene freezes and there is a high pitch noise coming from the tv with the frozen image. It did not matter if I had hdmi or component connection. After a couple of power cycles and upgrading the firmware (again) using a usb drive (rather than over the internet) now the machine does not even turn on. There is the blue-black initial screen and bands of salt-pepper noise. After five-six power cycles it comes up.
I started watching the moving after apprx. 2 hours of frustration for starting the machine and unfortunately at a certain point needed to pause the movie. Hit the play button, two minutes later, the screen froze with the high pitch sound.
I will probably return the player, my recommendation is against wasting money on something that does not work properly.』

(Good buy) 『Bought Samsung BP-1600 from Best Buy two weeks ago. Same price as Amazon and saved me the waiting time for shipping. So far so good. Play both Blue-ray and regular DVD movies. Uploading time varies from a few seconds to 10 seconds maybe.
Read a lot of review complaining the firmware update causing the player not functioning properly. Well, updated mine this morning and did not encounter any issue. I used Powerline adapter to connect the unit to internet via a ethernet cable. The downloading process took approximately 15 minutes and the whole updating process maybe 20 minutes. I tried both Blue-ray and regular DVD afterwards and did not have any functional problem with the player.
Registered for NetFlix right away and now I am watching a movie instantly on my TV via BP-1600. Good picture quality.
The only downside I experienced so far is the synchronization of my tv remote and the blue-ray player remote, both of which are from Samsung. Not sure it's because of my Fios TV DVR. Verizon tech programs the DVR remote so it controls both my TV and the DVR. But it's not a big issue to me I have to use two separate remote when I play my BP-1600 and TV.』
(Don't buy if you want to play CDs) 『I've had mine for a few weeks now. Seems to do a pretty respectable job playing DVDs and Blu-ray DVDs. But BE AWARE: If you want to play your music CDs on this player, it would be a poor choice of players. About 1/3 of my CDs won't load: Tray slides back open and screen (TV) says: "This disk can not be played." (These are store-bought CDs, not home-burned. Actually home burned seem to work better.) I tried upgrading firmware. Nope. I tried online chat with Samsung support. Nope. I've even exchanged the unit for another one (from my retailer). Same. My guess is that it's a firmware issue. I haven't yet tried Pandora, Netflix, or Blockbuster because I don't have a network connection in that room...yet.
So as I said: If you want to play movies: OK. If you want to also play your music CDs: NO.』
(My Sad Experience) 『My sad experience began on mid August 15, 2009. I ordered a Samsung Blu-Ray BD-P1600 Player from Andrew Electronics. It arrived in a few days, but did not work properly through the HDMI connection. I spent several hours making sure the problem was with the player and then contacted Andrew who promptly E-mailed a shipping label to me so that I could return the unit. Andrew sent a replacement that arrived within a week. However this unit had more problems with the HDMI connection than the first. Again I spent much time speaking to Samsung Support and LG support (LG is my TV brand) as well as testing the unit myself to make sure the problem was with the unit. I probably could have sent it back to Andrew again and received another unit or refund, but chose to send it to Samsung for repair even though I would have to pay the shipping costs. Samsung "repaired" the unit and returned it to me. It was now mid September. The repaired unit was worse than ever. Nothing worked through HDMI, not even setup. I took the unit to a local dealer who tested it on several brand TVs and it did not work on any of them. A BD-P1600 that the dealer had for sale did work so I sent the unit back to Samsung on September 27. On October 12, I received notice that the unit could not be repaired and would be replaced. However no unit was shipped. I made several phone calls to Samsung and was told that nothing would happen until the department responsible entered information into the computer system and there was nothing I could do about it until it was. The Samsung representatives were not helpful and some were in fact arrogant. I finally made contact with a Samsung representative who was friendly and willing to help. A replacement unit was finally ordered and arrived on November 13. It is trouble free. Note that all this took Three months! Lessons learned:
1. I would not buy again from Andrew. While he was most cooperative I am suspicious about the quality of the product he sells.
2. I would not buy again from Samsung. Their product may be fine if the one you receive is trouble free. However, if you have to send it in for repair you have a good chance of it not being properly repaired, and/or getting tied up in a bureaucratic system that seems helpless if someone does not enter the data into their computer system. In addition most of their representatives are arrogant and seem to delight in insulting your intelligence.
3. I will buy electronic equipment locally from now on. It is faster, much easier and less aggravating to deal face to face with a local dealer if there is a problem than to do it via E-mail, phone and UPS shipments.
