『I originally bought one of these several years ago because I was looking for a handheld without all the bells and whistles most of them have. This one fits the bill. It's easy to use and synchs with a Mac or PC. The screen on it conked out after a few years, but I'm guessing that's because I carried it in my purse with just a screen protector on it. So I just bought another one with a plastic case and I think the screen will fair better. I the second one used because the new ones are quite expensive. Either way, I'd recommend this product.』

『My old Palm TX died, and I didn't like it. The browsers are horrible; you can't see anything on the screen, it's too small. I liked the Tungsten E2 I had before it, so I wanted to get another Tungsten E2...but $579! Yikes! No way! I guess my PDA days are over as I don't like Smartphones either (and they have smaller screens than the TX!), especially given they can't communicate directly with the computer (we can't have people using the phone as a modem for the computer now can we?). Too bad, they are a real convenience, especially being able to create EXEL files, but that price is way too out of line for me.』

『I am a Palm Pilot user from WAY back when they first came out. I have used them at work and play and have, until now, had no mechanical issues with any of the four different ones I have used (Palm I, Palm III, Palm IIIc,and M515). The ONLY reason I purchased a Tungsten E2 is because I spilled water on my M515 and it died (ya think). The touch screen on the Tungsten E2 I received has yet to work properly. I touch it in one spot, the pointer clicks somewhere else and you have to be very alert to find it sometimes. Based on others reviews, I have not tried to have it fixed because I have little, if any, patience with faulty mechanical devices.

I am currently trying to find something to replace the E2 because it has fallen into the black hole in my bedroom where all things lost go to hide. The only reason I have for "needing" a PDA is for the games. I am retired and I like having specific mind tickling games to entertain myself with and to make sure that what brain cells I have left are still semi-working.』

『I purchased this Palm m500 to replace an older one that got damaged in a move. I primarily want it to keep organized and make grocery lists. The price was excellent.
It arrived fast and in great condition. It was purchased as new and it came new with it's own leather case. The Software that came with it easy to use, as well as the cables to Hot Synk and charge. The Cradel feature is not really a necessity, unless some really preffer it then it would be an extra accessory. It has lots of features that I would never use, but other customers might, including advance calculations.
The Display is excellent. There is no need for color display. Even though I do play some games such as solitair, black and white quite sufficient and clear. Memory is more than adequate. After installing all I wanted and needed, including about 4 games I still have 3/4 free space. I do not connect to the internet with it, but it does have that capability.
I appreciate the price I paid for it, it was well worth it. Seller always answered email in timely manner and answered all questions to my satisfaction. Shipping was great and arrived fast.

『This was a brand new color Palm Pilot m515 that replaces my monochromatic Palm Pilot m505. I loved my m505 and was sad to see it go. Luckily the m515 popped up and I was sold. I don't want a Palm Pilot tied to my phone nor do I need the internet. Both the m515 and the m505 hold all of the data that I value. I thought I was going to have to settle for an upgrade that I really did not need.

The OS for both devices is the same which made it easy to transfer all of my data without any problem. The color display is great but the battery does not last as long if I am using the brightest color setting. I am familiar with the darkened screen and so I continue to use it. The graffiti window does not work as well so I usually use the software keyboard.

The price was great! 1/2 of the cost for a new m505. Go figure. I have been watching for some time. I had synch problems from time to time with my 7 year old m505 and needed to replace it but not until I found a deal. The reviews indicated that the originals devices performed better and were more reliable than the newer ones. Consequently I am pleased with the minor upgrade.

『The release of the Palm m515 handheld proves that Palm listens to customers and is willing to make changes. Thanks to the indifferent customer response to the lackluster color screen of the Palm m505 (released in 2001), the Palm m515 boasts a much brighter display and contrast controls that were missing in its predecessor.

We were among the many who voiced disappointment with the Palm m505, and while the m515's color screen still isn't at the top of the class, it's an obvious and welcome improvement. With display support for over 65,000 colors, icons and images (viewed in the included PhotoSuite application) have a nice richness and depth of color. However, as the screen resolution is only 160 by 160 pixels, the m515 doesn't achieve the crispness found in the Sony T615 (which has a 320 by 320 pixel resolution). But ultimately, unless you need a high-end multimedia viewer integrated into your handheld, you should be suitably happy with the m515's display.

There are only three levels of brightness contrast control--high, low, and off. At first we were taken aback by the "off" setting, as it rendered the screen almost invisible in our office, but it's fine for outdoor usage and will help conserve battery power.

With its curved angles, thin design, and light weight, the Palm m515 feels very comfortable, both in the palm of your hand and resting in your pocket. Also, with the m515's 33 MHz DragonBall VZ processor, we found switching applications to be very fast.

The applications and desktop software (version 4.01 for Windows and version 2.6.3 for Mac) haven't changed, and that's just fine with us. (Note that a beta version of Palm Desktop 4 for Mac OS X is available for download.) The Palm interface is one of the most elegant and simple to understand--yet powerful--operating systems around.

But Palm adds more power with a variety of add-on applications that you can choose to install, ranging from Documents To Go for viewing and editing Word and Excel documents, to Palm's collection of mobile connectivity apps, to the aforementioned PhotoSuite for viewing images and short movies. Our favorite is AvantGo, an app that downloads Web content to the m515 whenever you synchronize, which enables us to keep up with the latest world news as well as Aussie Rules Football scores. You can add even more content and applications via the expansion slot, using optional Secure Digital or MultiMediaCard memory cards.

You can choose to synchronize the Palm m515 with the Palm Desktop application or link to Microsoft Outlook (Windows only). Palm Desktop is more than adequate, but if you are in a corporate environment and Outlook is your scheduling/e-mailing/tasking brain center (which it is for us), the synchronization is seamless.

(Peek very nearly perfect for my needs)
『I was looking for a way to have easier access to email when traveling, without always needing to carry around a laptop, but the ongoing expense of a smartphone was too much for my needs. (I also have a cheap cell phone that I use as little as possible, preferring email/text.) This device is nearly perfect for me. Its very light, works well, has a nice keyboard and feel, and the lifetime service made it a great value. Emails arrive nearly instantly, often faster than into Thunderbird. Customer service and technical support have been very good in comparison with other companies. The support staff are almost all very knowledgeable and helpful. It usually only takes a minute or few minutes to get through on the phone. There were some initial problems with converting to gmail, downloading gmail contacts, and getting my (unusual) work email system set up properly, but Peek staff patiently got me through every issue (in conjunction with tech support at work), and everything is working just fine now. I love having access to email info systems (this can fill a few of the needs that not having a web browser creates) like weather reports, wikipedia look-ups, maps, news reports, etc, which I didn't know about/expect. There is one remaining issue which I hope will be solved by Peek soon. Since I would prefer to use this device only intermittently (like while traveling, on extended commutes, etc), I would like to have a feature that would prevent all stored email from being downloaded to the Peek whenever it is turned on (this happens even if the email is already marked as read/deleted, since it was already downloaded to the Peek server). This downloading backload can take a long time to process, and delays being able to see any truly new messages. As a consequence, I've just been keeping the Peek on all the time, which is a waste of power/recharging/my time. But overall, I'm very pleased with this product and particularly with their customer service/technical support.』

(Niche product, not as good as I had hoped)
『I thought that this would be perfect product for me. I don't need a phone, I just need access to my email. I bought the lifetime contract, used the device for a few days, and I'm returning it today.

I like the idea, and I wish a better product were out there to fill this niche. Here are my complaints:

- The keys are too hard to press, and the space bar is too small
- "Push" email is not instant as advertised -- it still takes about 3-6 minutes for me to get email from my servers.
- The screen isn't easy to read. The color schemes are ugly and the resolution is bad.
- The scroll wheel needs to be improved.
- I wish this had real IMAP support -- it doesn't sync with the IMAP servers.

『Peek Pronto is GREAT for me. Cost is low. I went with lifetime. At just a tad over the cost of a year of service why not. You can email, update your facebook status, tweet (yep you can TWEET with it) using free email to service apps this little device can actually do a lot. Get you directory assistance FREE, maps, weather and more. I have my home phone voicemail set to be transcribed to text and emailed to me. Once you think about it.. this little device does more than you think, and doesn't cost me $100 a month! I am saving over $900 in the first year along by NOT having a cell phone and using this device. For me it did just what I wanted and needed.』

『I saw the Peek products advertised on the Amazon home page, and was looking for a way to help my 77-year old mother get started with texting. I thought Peek's advertised simplicity might be the answer. So I bought a device for $[...] and bought one month of service for $[...], with the understanding that it's not a service plan, and if I didn't like it, I could easily opt-out.

I used it for a few days and decided it wasn't what I wanted. It is simple, but the text messaging feature is a hack on top of email, and they put ads for their service in the text messages, and texting is more or less one-way, and it's the wrong way for me. It's easy for the Peek user to send text messages but virtually impossible for them to receive them. This didn't suit the application I had in mind, because I wanted the ability to send messages to mom. I didn't think she'd be sending many on her own (she doesn't now).

So I decided to opt out. There's no way to do it from the website. They don't explain how to opt out the FAQ, [...]. When I called the sales department, they said I could turn the service off, but I wouldn't be able to use the remaining time on the month worth of service I had already purchased. I said that's unacceptable. I wanted to get off the monthly plan and use the remainder of the time I had already purchased. (Maybe I'd find another use for it?)

After a lot of back and forth, the service person, Jacqueline, said I should get in touch with the operations manager, David Hung. I'm going to email him a pointer to this blog post.

Net-net, Peek is an attractive device, the service works reasonably well for email, but not for texting. It is simple to set up and use, however they don't make it easy to get out. At this point, I'm still going to charged for $[...] on December 2. They'll probably do what I asked after reading this review, but you shouldn't have to write a review for what should be a routine matter. It should be easy to turn the automatic renewal off and on as you wish.

Not the kind of service I've come to expect from products promoted by Amazon.』

It has been out over a year and still seems like a beta product. It is really a mixed bag.

Looks like a calculator or toy
Small screen that is hard to read ( low resolution, very limited font selection&size ). If you have older eyes, forget it.
No true IMAP syncing of your email
No true IMAP email folder support
No ability to view HTML emails ( so common these days ). Text based only !
Toy-like keyboard ( not high quality like a BlackBerry )
Limited selection of colors
No ability to receive over-the-air software updates ( you must send it to them in New York City or buy a special proprietary cable ) ( big design flaw )
Limited availability ( not sold in big box stores )
Unreliable email pushing ( some times it works fast and other times not at all ) ( speed varies by email provider too )

『I have owned my Tungsten E since 2004 and recently upgraded to an iPod touch--and I want my Tungsten back! I dislike the touch because it doesn't do some things that my now-obsolete Tungsten does. Most importantly, the Tungsten will connect to a Bluetooth full-size keyboard, which greatly eases writing.

I finally "upgraded" to the touch because after 5 years of sterling service (which includes one battery replacement through a third-party vendor that voided the warranty--battery replacement requires welding, which exceeds my skill set), my Tungsten E's on/off switch is broken and its plug-in charger doesn't work, so I must charge through the USB port. Add to that the obsolete OS and a clearly failing battery, and I decided it was time to upgrade. Big mistake! If I had to do it over again, I'd spend the money on a Tungsten T|X, which has wi-fi capability, or I'd send my existing unit in for repair. I angsted about buying the touch because the lack of a full-size keyboard was a deal-breaker for me, but I finally caved when I discovered the touch has Bluetooth--although alas, no Bluetooth keyboard yet exists.

I tricked out my Tungsten E with some add-ons to make it do what I wanted it to do. I'm giving three stars for "ease of use" because what I did requires some technical know-how. I downloaded and installed a number of freeware programs. I wanted the unit to do its record-keeping thing (contacts, to-do list), but I also wanted it to play music and videos, and I wanted to read e-books. My unit runs Palm OS v.5.2.1. I downloaded and installed the following updates and patches: Palm Outlook Conduit Updater; Palm Tungsten E SDIO Update; and Palm Desktop 4.1.4. I installed FileProg, which grants me access to the TE's files, so I can see directory structure.

I push music (MP3) and video (MP4) onto a cheap 2GB memory chip with PFB FilePC2PDA. (I have avoided trying any larger-capacity chips because word on the street is that the unit may not read these larger chips.) To play music, I use RealPlayer for PalmOne. I particularly like that I can listen to music while doing something else on the unit. To play video, I use TCPMP 0.72 RC1, which was very difficult to get to work because a crucial component (the audio) is disabled for intellectual property reasons. I had to use some kung-fu to make it work--but it was worth it. The video quality is wonderful. It's perfect for amusing myself while working out at the gym. To read e-books, I use Palm Reader, which came with the unit. To convert TXT files to PDB, I use Easy PDB.

The Tungsten E was/is a good fit for me because I do not really need a cell phone or wi-fi. I really like the ability to use a full-size fold-out keyboard; it's wonderful while traveling. For an easy-to-use stand-alone device, the Tungsten E is perfect for me. My existing unit is on its last legs, but I love it with an undying passion. It did everything I wanted.』

『For the first few months when it still works it's pretty good. Almost everyone I know had a very bad experience with this less than half a year after buying it. Feeling lucky? Otherwise don't waste your money because it will die on you one way or another.

『This is the third Palm I had over 7 years. The more advanced Palm gets the worse they get.
Less than six months after I got my fancy new TX my digitizer went. I call this slick advanced company, right? Wrong! I get some girl who can't speak English and insists she does when I asked to be transfered to someone who I can communicate with. Finally, I sent it in under the year warranty. They sent it back with the digitizer fixed, but with a new problem. The on/off button doesn't work right. So I have a choice of shelling out for shipping again and managing without my Palm or turning it on with one of the other buttons and setting the automatic shut off. OK so what do you thing I choose? Then about a week after the year warranty was up it really went on the blink. Now I needed my on/off button to work so I can do a hard reset. Well I finally get it on a random time that it decided to work but that didn't help. Gradually it got worse and worse. Eventually about 14 months after I shelled out a hefty piece of change for this aggravation it totally died.
I sympathize with those of you who are still used to the Palm system, but do yourself a big favor buy something from a different company!!!
By the way I know a number of people who also had the TX and had major problems with it and gave up on Palm.

One more thing. A note to all those who reviewed the TX positively right after they got it, mine was also great and impressive when I first got it. If you really want to help people rewrite your review after using it for a year. It will most likely be a different review.

I chose the Palm TX based on my desire for a handheld computer, on various professional and private reviews, and finally, on price. The used TX that I purchased has worked out fine -- living up to its reviews. Yes, as they say, the battery life is fair to poor. Operating System and Software
Veteran Palm OS handheld users will immediately notice the new Favorites view, which provides easy access to applications, files, and folders. The installed Palm OS 5.4 also introduces the Files application, which enables easy navigation among folders and files. It uses the intuitive and easy-to-learn Graffiti 2 writing software to input data into the handheld (as well as an on-screen keyboard). Windows users can synchronize their calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes with Microsoft Outlook. The Palm OS features the following organizer applications:

『I'm still learning about this pocket pc, which lets you know there are lots of programs and possibilities. I'm using it mostly to keep track of information for work. I work for a school district and cover several different schools. Having some student info on this keeps me from having to take files from place to place. I also plan to download some education law info this coming year. It's great being able to sync info with my pc's at work and home to the pocket pc. I think this will be indispensable for keeping track of appointments, meetings, contacts and records. Also, I tried loading some music, and that's terrific! 『I bought this for my husband and he loved it. His first IPAQ was a cell phone also, so the learning curve was slight. Internet setup was a breeze. His friend like his so much that his wife bought him one too. I would tell anyone though that depending on what you use it for your may want to get a differant model with more memory. Over all though, my husband was very pleased with the purchase.』

(Not as good as 5-year-old iPAQ 3715)
『I had an hp RX3715 iPAQ that lasted nearly five years, so I'll compare to that one. I've used all the built-in features, especially the Calendar with its reminder feature. Using Word was my second-most used program. I also bought other software such as a dictionary.

A battery charge on the new iPAQ 111 doesn't last nearly as long and it takes a lot longer to recharge the battery.

It doesn't have infrared communication ability and one of the great features of my old iPAQ was its spectacular "universal remote" capability.

The volume isn't nearly as loud on the new iPAQ. Putting it on its highest setting is about the same as medium on the old unit.

The new iPAQ's screen is much brighter than the old one. Nice for being in the sunlight, but it uses up the battery much faster. I set it to a dim setting because I'm usually indoors. When I'm outside, it takes too many screen taps to access the brightness settings, which is nearly impossible when I'm in the sun and can't see the screen, so I still have to find shade (my hand isn't enough.) They should've made one-button access to the brightness control.

The buttons on the bottom of the unit are larger, but they don't have solid space around them like my old one did. Thus I frequently hit them with my hand while I'm writing on the screen, throwing me into some other function and losing the words I'd just written on the screen.

I am happy the new iPAQ has a commonly available USB cable. I like that the SD slot and power button are no longer on the top. Dirt could easily get into my first iPAQ and one of the things that gave me trouble with it was an erratic power button. Unless you frequently remove the SD card, I suggest you put tape over it to keep dust and water out.
The new iPAQ apparently has a feature to allow it to connect via Bluetooth to my cell phone so that I can access the Internet when I'm not in a hotspot. I'll like this, but I haven't tried it yet, so I can't comment further on that.
The new iPAQ is about half the size of my old one, with the same RAM, memory and screen resolution. The old one also had a camera, but my cell phone had a better camera, so it wasn't really worth the extra $200 (but it was a lot easier to transfer photos and videos to my desktop.)

I'm having terrible trouble getting my new iPAQ to sync with my desktop, via ActiveSync. It takes 45 minutes to synchronize whereas my old iPAQ would easily sync in five. Then when the iPAQ is attached via the USB cable, the desktop extremely slows down with ALL software. AND it stays that way even after I disconnect the iPAQ--I have to reboot the desktop. Thus, I recharge the battery with the separate charger instead of the USB cable--resulting in backing up my iPAQ data less often. I can put the iPAQ's SD card into my computer to back that data manually, but... I put an 8 Gb SD card into this new iPAQ, but it seems my hp m7070n desktop can't read SD cards larger than 2Gb--but that might be a problem with my Windows XP.

My second iPAQ has the newer Windows Mobile 6.0 version, and as so often with "latest and greatest" from Microsoft, it's primarily different for the sake of different--I have to learn how the heck to find things that aren't any better than the previous version. Many of the changes are for the worse. For example, when Calendar gives a reminder, I have very few "Snooze" options. I'd GREATLY hoped the handwriting recognition would've improved in five years, but it didn't.
I feel many of the "improvements" on Windows Mobile 6.0 was an attempt to compete with iPods and other music devices, and it still isn't as good as them.

I bought an hp foldable keyboard to go with my new iPAQ 111. I bought it directly from hp and they told me they no longer had the tri-fold model that had been available. (I didn't buy that tri-fold when it was available, but wish I had. LATER, I discovered some retailers still have that smaller model.) The new keyboard is Bluetooth only and with the way my new iPAQ eats up battery charges, and Bluetooth needs power, I have to keep the unit plugged in. The older keyboard allows the user to run via a cable. The new keyboard has a slide-out stand to hold the iPAQ, but it's so flimsy I'm sure it'll soon break. Plus, the bottom of this stand is rounded and my iPAQ slips off--they should've given it a lip to actually hold the iPAQ. The keyboard also has something to lock it in open position so we can lay it on our lap without it collapsing down between our legs. Again, this is so flimsy that it bends and folds anyway.

I had a metal case from RhinoSkin for my PREVIOUS hp RX3715 iPAQ, but they don't have one for the model 111, so I got one from BoxWave and I'm NOT happy with it. First, it has a clear plastic face that provides limited protection. I'd accidentally stepped on my old RhinoSkin case, dented the face slightly, but it saved my iPAQ. The BoxWave case wouldn't stand up to that. Second, the clear face lets me read the screen, but I have to open the case to do any screen-touch anyway, so it's impractical. Third, I don't like letting other people read what's popped up on my screen when I get a Calendar reminder when the iPAQ is on my belt.
The new case makes it difficult to reach the power button when the front cover is closed and impossible when the cover is open. It also has useless access holes in the faceplate. The holes apparently allow me to touch various buttons, but again, I have to open the cover anyway to then use the device, so these holes only weaken the case and allow more dirt to get in. It even has a hole just to see the "hp" logo on the iPAQ.
The belt clip isn't as good as the RhinoSkin's. I had the same type on a cell phone I lost because the clip doesn't easily lock into place.
Unless RhinoSkin provides a case for the iPAQ 111 soon, I plan to epoxy a metal plate over the clear plastic on the BoxWave case to make it stronger.

All considered, I liked my previous hp RX3715 iPAQ much better.』

The important thing was to be able to quickly access to my stuff from anywhere and being reminded about upcoming events. Another option I considered was to have iphone or blackberry, which would give me all those options too; However, they require pretty expensive (in my opinion) data plan. Paying $30 per month just made me crazy. With Ipaq having WIFI and bluetooth nowadays I can go to internet from anywhere. (and I realized that I dont' need access to internet that often anyway)
I'm glad I chose ipaq. It meets all my needs, has all the features I wanted an even more. If you need this for business, or serious personal use (not simply a toy - i highly recommend this product.』

(Drain Battery Before First Charge)
『Like a fool, I listened to the instructions and the first thing I did was charged the battery. I already knew better than this, but I was anxious to do the right thing with my new unit. So, now the batt only lasts ~ 0.75 -1.5 hrs (hard to say because its not in continuous use). I recommend to deplete the battery completely, as with any other device, before charging. Otherwise, its exactly what I wanted.』
