The problem was that with every VHS tape I played in this deck, the color cut out&back in throughout the play. At first I thought maybe it was the tape which was deteriorating, but usually it's the picture tracking that goes; I've never seen it with the color. When it became apparent that it did it on EVERY tape I played, I had to send it back. As I said, EVERY brand of DVD or VHS equipment I've purchased has had problems,they are just not near the quality they were in the `80s. I'd rather pay more&get a better product, but price makes no difference. Was VERY HAPPY&AMAZED to find that all signals (VHS, DVD&TV Tuner) are able to be played back through the HDMI cable to TV. Makes VHS playback sharpest picture you can get. I have 1 cable running to my TV from this machine. (No Need for the S-Video cable) This allows hook up to be very easy, very fast and makes for nice neat appearance. (1 cable vs 3,4 or 5) DVD recording play back is very SHARP and CHRISP. Sound is perfect too. Having the DTV tuner lets me record DTV chanels too.
Only feature I found that was a little problem, was the Auto Clock setting. Clock did not keep correct time when in Auto Mode. Changed Clock setting to Manual Mode and clock keeps perfect time now.. 』

(A very good recorder.) 『I've used this recorder to record all my digital camcorder tapes to DVD and the picture quality is as good as veiwing the original tape. I have also taped many TV shows and never put more than 3 hours on a DVD. Picture reproduction is excellent. If you record on long play the picture quailty suffers. I use the DVD-RW discs and have erased and rerecorded on one disc at least 10 times with no loss of picture quality. Once you get the hang of it, timer recording is fairly easy to do. I haven't used the VCR function yet, but plan on transferring those tapes to DVD. On the whole I am very happy with this product. This recorder is identical to the Toshiba and several other products on the market. The instruction manuals are identical, except for the name in them.』

This has lasted more than the other DVD/VHS from JVC, lasted around 3 to 4 months, mostly DVD's would not look great and would skip. The V9800 has been the best DVD/VHS Player I've had. Bought it cheap and new I bought it close to when I bought my Samsung TV. I like the Remote control on the V9800 because I don't need to worry about TV's Remote because I can turn on and off the TV and control the volume and channels, I use that feature a lot and don't have to worry about the other control until I need to use it. I'm surprised to see all this bad ratings for a good DVD/VHS, I use mine a lot and almost everyday and it keeps working great. This is my second Samsung DVD/VHS, the other one is the Samsung DVD-V9700 Tunerless 1080i Upconverting DVD VHS Combo Player and that one is 20 months old. Still works and being used on the downstairs TV. The Samsung DVD-V9800 Tunerless 1080p Upconverting VHS Combo DVD Player is being used at my room. I am looking to get another one of these because we still have most of our collection in VHS.』
(Take control of product failures) 『Place a 3 to 4 in small fan and blow through the vented holes from left to right. Chances are that the chips get overheated and fail. That's what I have done to this unit after reading about all the failures with this product. I have a Panasonic recorder that I applied 4 screws to lift the lid up 1/2 in for convection. Makes the unit work better with more cooling. It may help your under-cooled units! To add a Tuner, use a short yellow Composite video interface to a TV Converter box like Insignia.』

(Limited capability and CHEAP!) 『I received this as a gift, else I myself would have been more careful what I was buying.
First, if you do not have an external Cable Box(Tuner) you will not be able to Record with this DVD/VCR Player, since it has NO TUNER. Some TVs have a Video Out you can use as a Record IN to this Player, but not many. And even if your TV does, your TV has to be on and selected to the channel and program you want to record, so you have to be right there at the time of the program. What good is this??
Second, the Remote is poorly laid out and way TO COMPLICATED. I know most are, but this one is especially A MESS!
Third, the CHEAP part:
1.After 2 months of use as a PLAYER ONLY, since my TV like most, has Audio Out jacks only for external speakers, I CANNOT RECORD, this Player began to TURN ITSELF ON. Note I have no Cable Box and this unit has NO TIMER so there is no way it can be setup to turn itself on by design. After observing this problem, I noticed after I turned the power off, it would turn itself back on after about a minute delay. My Remote was totally out of site and not inline with the units infrared receiver.
2.Afer another month of using it by just letting it STAY ON, due to problem above, the DVD DRAWER WOULD NOT OPEN. I tried to open it both on the Front Panel and using the Remote, but no response whatsoever. Not even a noise or movement of any kind.
I gave up and recycled this thin to Waste Management. Since it was a gift, I did not want giver to know what a piece of junk they had given me, and also it would be highly unlikely they would have kept the receipt anyway.
I highly recommend new buyers steer clear of this product. If my experience was the only one here having reliability problems, I would have given it 1 more stars for price and compactness, but still remove 3 stars from 5 for not having a TUNER/TIMER for Record and not MAKING THIS CLEAR ON BOX, and its early failures. As it is, I am left with no choice but to give it 1 more star than, in my experience and opinion, it deserves. 』

I was told that my television needed a "video out" jack to connect to the VCR". I explained my television didn't have a "video out' jack to which the customer service rep replied; "most don't, you'll need to get a cable box to connect the two." My option was to then pay 50 some dollars a month for cable just so I could record on a machine labeled; " Video Cassette RECORDER" or return the device. I returned it the next day.』

I shopped around and found this to be the best mix of quality / price.
After using it a few times, it does everything as advertised. Auto-tracking on the tapes was fast and great. We haven't had one that looked bad yet. The remote is super easy to use, and it's very simple to switch between dvd and vcr. The picture's clear (or as clear as a vhs / dvd can be) and the audio is good.
When rewinding vhs tapes, sometimes it makes a really loud noise (to be expected when rewinding at high speeds), but it's never damaged any tapes. The only other possible con is the lack of a built in timer for vhs recording, but come on, get with the times! If you're looking to record programs, get a dvr!
The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is I am used to blu-ray / HD quality so I can't justify giving this 5 stars. If I were in the market for another dvd/vcr, I would buy this again.』

(Solidly built) 『First let me say the only reason I bought this was because I wanted a silver DVD/VCR combo that wasn't "cheap" like a Sylvania from Kmart. There are over a dozen black combo units out there today but it's surprisingly hard to find them in any other finish. The first one I tried was a Philips but it turned out to be plasticky, flimsy and too shallow to sit my DVR on top of it. This JVC looks and feels solidly built--heavy, with a metal case over 10 inches deep, on top of which my Explorer 8300HDC DVR fits nicely. My only complaints are that it lacks optical digital audio output (it just has coaxial, like everything else in this price range) and the color is darker than my DVR (and darker than the Philips unit it replaced). The color does, however, match my LG TV (LG 30FS4D / 30FS4D / 30FS4D 30 Super Slim Direct View Integrated HDTV).
If you don't mind black you can probably do better than this JVC (which also comes in black), but if you're looking for silver (and not second-hand), and you don't need a tuner or DVD recording features, this is probably the best available without paying 50% more.』

The operations of the rest of the remote controls could be clearer. A big problem I have is that the remote has a LOT of plain buttons that all look they same. In a dim room I usually hand to to somebody else to fast-forward, etc. Features - exactly what is advertised and expected. No frills. Picture Quality - Haven't used it on a discriminating system but it looks ok to me. Sound Quality - Haven't used it on a discriminating system but it sounds ok to me. I use my machines as basic players. Seems like I remember the manual on this one being a little vague. They charge you a 15% restocking fee and don't refund your shipping charge either way, to ship it or ship it back.
I bought this and spent close to $100 in total (incl shipping to and back to them) and I got a refund of $57.00.
So all in all, I was out about $40 and I have NOTHING to show for it.
I did email them prior to buying this,asking about more product detail, and they sent me a rather curt email saying they could not give me any more information.
I went ahead and bought on good faith, but was very disappointed, espically when I was out $40.
Just beware of this seller.

(Where the turner?) 『I ran across this unit in my local Target Store the price is creaper here on Amazon. I still an ancient who use VHS to records all his TV shows. I do alot of recording with alot of VHS tapes. I have five machines. I hate ads and want to skip through them. My Sony VHS finally gave out after 15 years, So I was looking for a machien with a RF connection with the set up I have that need one. Most DVD/VHS has three wires input and I had to go to Radio Stack to get a device to connect the three wires and RF feed. This one had RF conenction which is what I want. I had a Phillips before and it for fine, but gave out after a couple of years. The warnng was clearly on the box, I did not see it till I was talking it out of the car. No turner, it did not hit me till I realized what was missing. Now I know why it was cheap. This is great for a connect through between a cable box and TV. You have to set the cable box channel leave it on and set the VCR to record. You can't set any channels with this machine. One channel that it. So this a cheap way around VDR if you only tape a few shows. Otherwise it a waste of money.』
(Not as good as JVC HRXVC12S for same price) 『I wanted a DVD/VCR combo with a silver finish to match my silver SA Explorer 8300HDC DVR. This was the only silver unit I could find (new and from reputable stores/websites) other than the JVC HRXVC12S (JVC HRXVC12S Progressive Scan DVD Player and VCR Combo)...not counting a couple Walmart/Kmart brands I wasn't too keen on like Sylvania. I was less than thrilled with this Philips combo upon unboxing it, however, as the entire thing seemed to be made of plastic, and it was not as deep (front to back) as my DVR, under which I wanted it to be placed. I played a couple of DVDs and noticed the tray seemed very flimsy--definitely not kid friendly. Whilst the picture looked fine, there was a noticeable pause when the layer changed. I was also disappointed that the remote was filled with nearly 50 tiny, similarly-sized&shaped buttons that didn't glow or illuminate. It's also not Energy Star certified and does not have a dts decoder.
By comparison, the JVC does have a dts decoder, is Energy Star certified, has a more user-friendly remote, its DVD tray feels solid and it's built with a metal case. It's also about an inch deeper so it fits underneath my DVR much better. Unfortunately its silver finish is darker than the DVR's, but I believe it's better than the Philips in every other way.
Note that neither of these units has an optical digital output (just coaxial), and neither routes the VHS picture through the component outputs. Neither has HDMI or a TV tuner either but that should be obvious.』

The first tape skipped and had poor picture quality, even though it played perfectly on our old VCR. The next two tapes had poor picture and sound quality, even though they also looked and sounded fine on our old VCR. Am returning the unit to WM. Will be forced to spend more money to get a better unit. I would give an "A" to Magnavox for their telephone service support. However, I would give this unit a "D" on performance. (A waste of time if you want to record programs) 『I just spent quite a bit of time hooking up one of these models bought at Wal-mart. After I figured out how to make it work with our TV so that it would both play and record, we discovered some of it's shortcomings. There is no digital readout screen on the front of the unit. (yes we did notice that before) The buttons like "play" do not light up. (didn't realize that) When setting up the clock and all that we discovered there is no internal tuner to set up or receive the channels from cable. It does have a timer to record, but it will only record whatever is being played on the TV at that time. So you can not watch one show while recording another. Also, if the TV is off, guess what it will record? That's right - nothing. Screwiest, craziest VCR we've ever owned, but as I speak it is being taken back for a refund. That's why I'm on here looking around. Haven't found anything yet that will meet our simple needs for under $100. I guess we have to pay more or change our ways or both.』

Full warranty is for 90 days, so I figured I'd have to send to service center and pay something for Toshiba to repair or replace. Could not find the service center going through the Toshiba site, so I called Toshiba customer service between 9 and 5 as directed and got the runaround for over an hour ... could access how to get my tape out, but never how to get Toshiba to honor the partial warranty for months 4-12. Finally threw the thing away. I will not buy Toshiba again.』
(Amazing DVD player, not so good VCR) 『I bought this recently at a Best Buy and was terribley dissapointed when I found out that there was no s-video for the vcr and the only way to have the vcr and dvd player share the same output was to use composite, and so after setting up this unit to two different inputs (one for composite and the other for component) I tried watching a movie on dvd and found that this unit responds almost instantly to commands from the remote and the unit only makes sounds when it's reading the disc. For the vcr, it plays fine, but since I only need it to play vhs tapes, I haven't tried recording anything, so I wouldn't know about that.
It's a great dvd player, but so-so as a dvd-vcr combo.』
(Doesn't deserve a Star...) 『I purchased this yesterday at Best Buy. It (thankfully) was the last unit they had in stock. It won't load the tape properly. The tape loads crooked, with the left side sticking up in the machine. Needless to say, it won't play the tape in that position. I'm returning it this evening. I can't seem to find a "decent" VCR for dubbing my tapes to DVD anymore. I just want to dub from the VCR to the computer. :(』
(Buy another brand) 『I bought this recorder to replace my Sony VCR that went bad after 8 years. This was probably one of the worst purchases I have made. Amazon got me the VCR in 2 days and the setup only took minutes but that is the last good thing I have to say. The remote control is extremely poorly designed. The rewind is slow under both modes. The search function was very difficult to use due to poor documentation. There is no slow playback function in either forward or reverse. The buttons on the remote are not in logical places causing a lot of hunting for the right keys. The lettering on the remote is very small and hard to see. The function I really miss is the one to let you know how much tape is left to be recorded. All in all, I am sorry that I bought this and will probably never buy anything from Toshiba again.』

Connectivity is limited, as noted by the previous reviewer. In my case, the hookup is RCA only so I can't connect it to an older TV with an RF coax.
Timer recording is so convoluted (actually, EVERYTHING is so convoluted) and you can't watch TV through the VCR while it's recording - it locks you into the DVD mode. In other words, if you set the timer, you can't watch TV or spot-record in the VCR mode. You have to shut off the unit to watch TV.
The sound level drops *depreciably* from the sound level of the TV, not only when playing VHS/ DVD tapes, but even when you just turn it on.
There's no auto-tracking and the tracking buttons do nothing to adjust the picture. The sound drops even lower playing VHS and you can't get rid of those rolling tracking lines. I haven't checked to see if this also happens on tapes recorded by this unit or if it just happens on tapes I've recorded on another unit.
The open/close button on the remote doesn't do what it's supposed to do. It either stops the action or else it cycles back and forth between open/close. I have to get up from the couch and manually press open/close from the unit itself.
Moving through/selecting the menus is primitive and so counter-intuitive. It takes forever. And the manual is totally useless.
The remote is convoluted and not user-friendly. It's also cheaply made - there are several spots where the plastic is splitting and I've only had it one month.
Rewind is excruciatingly slow.
I'm sure I'm forgetting some other really annoying problems. This unit is almost as primitive as VCRs/DVD players when they first came out. I bought Toshiba to get away from the SONYs I've been buying that die within a year, but it looks like I'll have to check out other brands now.』 『DVD/VHS Combo DVD Player』
