(Great. While it works.) 『This worked great for about a month and then started to have problems auto-reversing during play. There is something wrong with the friction wheel in the device that fails after a few dozen hours of work. The sound quality when it was working was great. I wanted this to work, since the FM transmitter products I have used have not met my expectations and cost a lot more.
I bought two of these items and the other one has lasted a little longer but it is starting to show the same signs. One suggestion is flipping the cassette part over if you can use it that way in your player. This seems to work for a short drive, but you end up flipping the cassette over and over on long drives and the wires usually get in the way when you're not inserting it in what would seem like the primary direction for your player.』
(Decided to tinker, now buying another) 『I carefully read all the reviews before buying this product. I liked that people had taken it apart to make it work better in their stereos (and that it was CHEAP!). So I did try it out first in my car stereo (Subaru 02 factory), and it worked pretty good, actually it worked great. The only drawback was that I could hear the cogs spinning, epecially on really quiet songs. I thought to myself, "I can fix that." So I proceeded to take it apart.
Hint #1: Most of the screws holding the cassette together are on one side, but don't miss the two on the other side. Because I did. I believe it was the ultimate reason for my failure. What happened was that I wasn't able to get the sides completely seperated (surprise!), which foiled my plan of seeing where everything belonged before I began dissassembling. Several things fell out immediately, including two springs. I decided to just go for it and take out ALL the gears, THAT would take care of that gear noise. Which leads me to:
Hint #2: The gears in the middle (that would turn the tape if there were tape in the cassette) are there for a reason. When I put the gearless cassette in my stereo, there was nothing for the stereo to engage so it just spit it right back out. Fortunately for me, it was at this point that I discovered the two screws I had overlooked, so putting things back together was a lot easier. I put all the gears back in (this part was relatively easy, even though I hadn't exactly seen where they had all come from). I decided to leave out the gear that was the offensive gear in the auto-reverse posts.
Hint #3: The auto-reverse gear that people are referring to is (I think) the one gear that you have to unscrew a screw to remove. I am not 100% sure on this as I wasn't really having that problem in the first place and wasn't ever able to get the damn thing to work again, but if for some reason I decided to go through this mess again that's what I would start with.
As I'm sure you have gathered, my cassette is still non-functional. I finally put everything back in, with the exception of those two springs, and I really think I got all the parts back in the right spots. But it did work, at least until I messed with it, and after looking at the Phillips, I have decided that the rock-bottom price makes the gear noise liveable. So hopefully I can keep my hands off the next one. Oh, and if anyone can tell me where those two springs go, I would really appreciate it.』
(Works as expected) 『I took the cassette apart to address the auto-rewind issue, but other than that it's great.』
(Cassette Adapter is Excellent) 『This cassette adapter works absolutely wonderful. I couldn't have asked for anything better. The sound quality is great once you figure out what volume to set your MP3 player in relation to the stereo. Thank you for a great product.』 『Coby Electronics Corporation is a manufacturer of quality consumer electronics products designed to deliver outstanding performance for value-conscious consumers who do not compromise on product performance.Coby CA-747 is a fully modular adapter for front-&side-loading cassette players. With this dual-position CD/MD cassette adapter you can play any portable CD player and minidisk through any audio cassette player.』 『The key feature on this cassette adapter is the dual position, fully modular adapter which gives you the option to plug this into both front and side-loading cassette players. If you're trying to connect your CD or mini-disc player into a cassette deck, this component should do the trick.
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Mini Disc-Awesome) 『Almost everybody I know either has an Ipod or MP3 player. Mini-Disc seems to just fly by and doesn't get a lot of attention these days. But you know what, thanks to Sony, I was able to find a portable music player that I can live with. Took me about 5 days to received my Sony MZ-NE410 Net MD. Seems like everyone hates the Sonicstage application that came with it (because of the check-in and check-out thingy). I Didn't want to take a chance so I downloaded the newest version and didn't see any of that crap that they were talking about. Also I was able to drag and drop, no problemo there. I'd transfered about 39 songs @ LP2 and only took me about 15 minutes or less. The battery was still full after all that. Maybe cause I was using a 2.8 Ghz system running on Vista. I suppose if your system can encode faster than you won't have to wait so long.
The bad part of this Net-MD is that you cannot tranfer back any song, but you can delete it through the Sonicstage application. There's no editing on the Net-MD and you can only do that from the PC side. Too bad this style doesn't have a backlight or a mic, which is why I'm giving it just a four star.
The best part was the battery life. It's freakin long. Just remember to bring a couple Discs. You may run out of songs before your battery do. I'm planning on getting another one; Sony MZNH600D Hi-MD MiniDisc Walkman, which can hold more songs and is powered thru the USB when connected to the PC. If you're looking to record look for one that has a mic/mic line. If you just need to listen than this one is great for you.
』
(Dead format still sounds great to me) 『I purchased this unit in September of 2009.
The first thing you need to do is download the latest software from Sony's support site and SimpleBurner 2, which is easy enough to find on a Google search. Take note, there are no 64 bit drivers for this device. If you are using a 64 bit OS, consider using VMWare Workstation to use it. It will not work using Windows 7's XP mode.
I mainly use this for listening to recordings made with a JE440 Sony Hi Fi MD deck, and I mainly use that to record Vinyl LP's. It sounds fantastic, the battery life for playing discs is incredible, and conveniently takes only one AA battery. When loading music onto it either via SonicStage of SimpleBurner, the battery will drain much quicker.
If your idea is to use this strictly as an MP3 player, I would look elsewhere. 1GB Sansa flash players can be had as cheap as $12 if you buy at the right place at the right time. MiniDiscs, however, offer a versatility flash players cannot, and the sound achieved with this unit is much better than any MP3 portable I've heard, even the Zune, which sounds far better than any iPod, IMHO.
The display screen offers only the most bare details and is a nightmare to read, no matter what light you're in. The only real gripe I have with this is it's hard to see the battery life indicator most times.
Also not, this unit is only a NetMD loader and player, uses only USB, and cannot record via TOSLink, Line In, or MIC. The USB is the only input on this device.』
(It's a great product for the price.) 『Very satisfied with this order. It may not be the latest in MP3s but it does more than what I needed in an inexpensive way.』
(Why Discontinue?) 『Great transformation from CD's. Wish there was a connection from this MD player to your head unit in the car, since they don't make MD Receivers for cars.』
(Good Player) 『I bought this minidisc player several years ago and ended up putting it in a drawer because the "sonic stage" software that came with the unit was beyond bad. It was virtually unusable.
Well, Sony has made vast improvements to "sonic stage". The 4.3 version is actually easy to use. According to Sony and some of the other people who have reviewed this unit it is also possible to use Real One Player (real network) to create discs for this player. I tried to use it and was never able to access the required plugin. Real network support tried to help but they were not able to figure out why I could not get real player to work with this unit. No matter. As I said "sonic stage" 4.3 is easy to use and is readily available on Sony's website.
And while this player will not store several GB's of music (like my Sandisk does) the discs it uses each hold several hours of music and plays them using one standard AA battery. There is something wonderful to be said for a minidisc player that runs for a long time on easily obtained, replaceable (I use rechargeable) batteries as opposed to players whose batteries are built in and have to be recharged while rendering the unit useless until recharging is complete. Let's hear it for simple, old school technology!
And I like being able to simply change discs to change what I am listening to. I don't have to hunt through a long menu of what's stored on my player to find something different. I still like my Sandisk but Sony's new software has taken this player out of the drawer and put it back into my pocket.
I would recommend this unit for anyone looking for something inexpensive, easy to use, and easy to "power" (those standard AA's are great). Media for this unit, MD 80s, are still very available, reasonably priced and they are reusable. I prefer Sony discs but Memorex media is also good.』 『Get up to speed with Sony's MZ-NE410 High Speed Net MD Walkman Recorder. The quality of the voice is excellent. Olympus WS-331M Digital Voice Recorder and WMA Music Player』
(Great, great voice recorder!) 『I hadn't used this recorder consistently since I bought it over 6 months ago and being as how the semester was going to be difficult taking Calculus III and University Physics II, I decided to break out my very much unused $100 piece of equipment for the Fall semester.
It's been a very solid recorder for recording my class lectures so far. I'll throw a few disclaimers out there though before I start the review for the recorder for my school lectures. My classes are about 30-40 people as I'm at a community college so there's not a huge auditorium to compete against or 200 other talking people. I also don't sit as close to the teacher as the first row. I'm usually in the 2nd or 3rd row back out of 4-5 rows. Those two things being said, the recording is amazing even if you don't real real close to the teacher. I do have to turn up the volume on my speakers when I download the recordings via USB, but that's about the only thing that I have to do to hear my lectures well when I'm reading over my notes again.
The features are pretty standard I suppose. This is my first time owning a recorder like this with no tapes and a 2 GB usb storage mechanism. The one thing I really love about it is that it's EXTREMELY light weight and compact. The pictures on here almost don't do it justice as to the portability of this device and for a college student looking to not be loaded down with 80 pounds of books and other items, it's a huge plus for me. Battery life is about a good solid 8-10 hours depending on which setting you use. It is best to use rechargable batteries for this kind of thing though since two 3 hour lectures in one day on the high quality settings can tend to run down the battery by the end of the day (although it always makes it through both of my classes with a few hours to spare).
I haven't bought any others like this except for an old micro-tape recorder that my dad used to have, but from my experience with this recorder alone, I won't be purchasing anything else until this sucker finally plays out on me! (fingers crossed) :)

(Recording wonder!) 『I purchased two of these recorders, one for myself, the other a gift. I have been amazed at the versatility, sound quality, and ease of use. I have used it to record person to person conversations, as well as conference calls, all with minimal effort, and excellent sound quality.』
(great quality sound) 『I use it for interviews. I love it becasue it is so small and unobstructive. I have done an interview next to a blaring air conditioner, next to a tv,&near construction, and when i listened to the playback the intervewee's words were full and crystal clear.』
(court reporter - great backup) 『I work as a Court Reporter and use this handy little recorder as a backup. It is especially handy when I have to move to chambers. I move my main unit and then throw this on the desk as a backup. It is compatible with my transcription software and I love it. I also use it to record church council meetings - as the secretary, I have to type up the minutes. The voice quality is excellent and it will pick up from an amazing distance for the size and without any external mic added to it.』 『Stay organized and on the move with this high-class storage device and powerful music player. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (It's okay for what it does) 『A step up from CD players but not up there with mp3 harddrive players.
It uses MiniDiscs which is a bonus for being small while also holding more than cds. But again it's not part of the player and it's just like any other cd: Limited amount of songs. Mp3 players will always store more, and it'll be there anywhere with you.
And like cd players you have to fast forward if you want to listen to one song that fits your mood at the time. Fast forward will kill the battery and just drive that disc crazy.
For the price it is nicer than say a small flash drive space mp3 player. ANd it does have the possibility of having more music than flash drive players and cd players.
So it is nice to get this for the price if you're not a huge music lover. If you are a music lover, and you have music in the thousands like me then I would go for the 20 or 60 GB harddrive mp3 players.
And that might sound bias, but I use to have this MD player but just recently upgraded to an iPod because my music was just too big to fit on so many MiniDiscs, and it was a huge hassle to want to listen to some Led on the train when the disc that it was on was at home.』
(Say no to MD) 『It's a great and stylish product but I won't buy one again. I know MD is very popular in Asia and other parts of the world, but I just don't see how is that better then MP3 players especially when the price on the MP3 players are getting cheaper by the days? I used to own 2 SONY MD players and got rid of them all!!! The sound quality is good only if you record the tracks in MD standard format and in real time. Anything other than that, is gonna sound crappy. I am sure many reviews have already covered that aspect. And the SONY software sucks too when it comes to copyright laws. They remind me a bunch of old guys trying to enforce the old rules. Do yourself a favorite and get a MP3 player like iPod or something.』
(The software brings down the overall value) 『Though the sound quality and other hardware features are good, I would seriuosly recommend users not to buy this product. The software is such a big hassle that you stop using it as a MP3 player. It is a big pain to check in and check out songs and the user interface of the sonicstage software needs to be improved by leaps and bounds.
Besides the discs cost high (5 discs for $8), typical SONY strategy of making money by selling high-priced accessories.
You can rather buy an IPOD, if you can afford it, since it has much more value for money. In case your budget is low, any standard mp3 players should do the trick rather than going for the NET MD player from sony.』
(Art's MD unit) 『Very impressed w/ this little Sony MD unit. Great sound in a small pkg. This is my 1st minidisc player so I don't have a reference for comparison. Haven't tried to dnld music or record yet. I understand from some of the other reviews that the software can be fustrating to use but as long as I stay within the capabilities/limitations of this MD Net unit It should function ok. The learning curve for me to get up to speed will be long&slow but I'll get there.』
(Very Impressed..) 『First off, I'm only going to comment on the HARDWARE, because everyone knows that the Sonicstage software leaves much to be desired. Moving right along, this is a great entry-level minidisc player. I wanted a HI-MD player, however the prices are very high right now. I'm going to wait for the next generation players to come out because prices should come down considerably. With having said that, Atrac, as a codec, is far superior to MP3. My ripped Atrac LP4 tracks (highest compression, thus more music on a MD) sound considerably better than 128 bit MP3. Likewise, the LP2 sounds magnificent as compared to mp3. Overall, sound quality is typical Sony quality. Very good. The menu takes a while to get used to, but works well once you get the hang of it. This is my first Minidisc player, and I'm suprised that such an old technology can be soooo good. I was considering buying an mp3 player (hard drive player,) but I remembered that years ago I really wanted a minidisc player, so I decided to research them. Minidisc media are very cheap, and can be rewritten up to a million times (as Sony claims.) The discs are very small and fit in a pocket painlessly. Using LP4 on an 80 minute disc, you can have 5 hours of music. Pair that with an additional disc in your pocket, and you can have 10 hours of music within easy reach. Be honest, do you really need THAT much music close by? The price is a lot better than MP3 too. You can find this model new and online for under 70.00 shipped. Would you rather run or bike with something 70.00 or an Ipod for 300.00? Also keep in mind Minidiscs are very durable. Again, do you *really* need to have your WHOLE music collection with you while you're excercising? Minidisc is a viable alternative to mp3 for this purpose. The small size of this unit is also nice for running. Sonicstage isn'tas bad as a lot of people make it out to be. I "burned" 5 hours of music in LP4 on a disc and it took less than 15 minutes (my mp3 files are on another computer that I'm wirelessly connected to, so your time will be much quicker.) Overall, this is a pretty basic player/recorder that will be more than enough for most needs.
In regards to recording with this unit, it is possible, and sounds good too. You will need a powered mic, however, and keep in mind that to upload back to your computer, you'll have to do it in real-time via your line-in on your soundcard. Also, keep in mind that by doing this, you lose all advantages of recording digitally as the connection through line-in is analog. But, the sound quality is still VERY good. In fact, it is very hard to tell the difference b/w the analog recording and original digital. If ALL you want to do is record, I'd reccomend getting and older model with a mic-in.』 『Leading the industry in digital music, Sony NetMD will maximize your entertainment even on the road. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (MiniDisc Carrying Case) 『I found this product to be just the right size to hold my new MiniDisc Player. It's not too bulky and is big enough to hold the player and one minidisc in the flap of the case. Definitely a smart purchase.』
(minidisc carrying case) 『I like this case because you can put it around your arm and it stays in place will you are running.』
(Great For The Gym! Not Much Else.) 『This carrying case is perfect for the gym. I am able to fit my MiniDisc Player, an extra disc, my headphones (behind the extra disc in the flap-pouch), and I slide my gym card behind the MiniDisc Player. It's a snug fit, but it works. I'm a big guy and I have big arms. While it does fit around my bicep (upper arm), I have it around my forearm at the gym and I am able to flex with ease. It fits real nice and comfortably. The downsides to this carrying case is that its not good for much more. After using it for a few months, it started to smell something aweful which meant I couldn't use it anywhere else. Washing it doesn't help much. While the velcro on the armband doesn't slip off, the velco on the flap closure is worn out and it doesn't close well anymore. I still enjoy this product with the flaws and all. I will just have to buy a new one.』
(What I expected) 『I ordered this item because it is annoying to carry around my md player at the gym. I didn't expect a lot from the product - obviously, it's not going to be all nice and streamline because the player is pretty bulky to begin with.
Biggest complaint is that the strap is really big if you have a small arm. If I pull it tight enough, the velcro is actually past the point where it sticks. Instead, I fold the strap slightly so that it will work - annoying, but works out in the end.
Don't expect a lot from this product and you will be happy.』
(Great for the gym) 『After reading all the negative reviews, I was extremely hesitant about getting the Sony MDCASE3. I'm glad I took the risk because it performs exactly as I had hoped.
Remember, this is an armband case. What that means to me is that it's practical for taking it to the gym, but not as good for other purposes.
- The velcro band itself is adjustable and fits around my arms just fine. I ran a couple of miles with it and it did not slide up and down my arm like the others have said. Maybe their arms are petite? I'm no Hulk but it works for me. I could see it possibly starting to slide a little once you start sweating, but the fabric on the inner side of the band is made of similar material/constitution as tennis headbands, so it should absorb moisture.
- The pocket where you place your MiniDisc is large enough to fit your NetMD player. It even fits an older model MD that I own. On the lid portion of the case, there's a webbed pocket for an extra MD. My MD's hold 160 minutes of music and I don't forsee using it to hold a spare disc. I do however, like to put the key to my locker and gym ID card in there.
- There is an open slit on one side of the case for you to run your headphones through. But unless you have a remote for your MD, you won't be able to efficiently control any of your MD's functions. One bummer is that the cord length might interfere with your workout, but I remedied that quickly by wrapping the extra cord around the case, THEN closing the lid over it. Problem solved.
- The dark gray color of the case looks great to me. I don't think anyone will mistake me for a hospital patient, as one reviewer wrote.
For the price Amazon is charging, this case is well worth the price. Now I can enjoy listening to my own music while I'm working out at the gym and it makes SUCH a difference for my motivation and enjoyment.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Do not buy -- the price is not worth the trouble) 『I have been looking for a shelf unit that can play more than 1 CD and has a cassette player -- a really basic one. Of course the simplest unit is the hardest to find out there nowadays. So I finally found this one, bought it in store for a good price, brought it home and put it together. First thing I noticed was that the buttons are not intuitive at all. Directions to set the clock is not intuitive at all. then the clock does not display well. so fine, I can live without the clock. Then just before it finished playing a CD, it switched to 'ipod' mode for no reason. I can't switch it back. I tried pressing 'cd', 'tuner', 'tape', and the ipod mode is still there. To reset it, I have to unplug and replug. I thought it was my lucky day so I exchanged for another one tonight. Easy to grab. -Very nice screen: it shows you the information about what you are playing and it is easy to read! -Picks up FM and AM great! -Headphone jack -Line in on back; I am always using it! -Subwoofer port on back! Awesome! -X-BASS is really cool! -Remote signals can be picked up from really good distance -Plays WMA's! GREAT feature! -It still works if you made your own CD -Doesn't run hot -Can set it to play stuff at certain time -Shiny -Good quality, the remote is great!
CONS: -Short power cord -CD takes a while to start playing -Can't tune it, skip to certain tracks, or pause from the main unit; only on the remote(don't lose the remote!) -USB doesn't work always, but that's okay
Overall, if you are looking for a stereo, this is probably your best option! Sharp is awesome anyways! FIVE STARS!!』
(Liittle sound control) 『The ipod cradle on top is nice, and the unit worked with my pre-existing book shelf speakers. But there isn't any place to attach extra ones. I considered sending it back when I discovered that you have no control over individual sound settings. You can only choose from a list of pre-set settings. So if I wanted to boost the treble, or lower the bass- can't be done. Because of that, I don't like it.』
(Great sound, but cannot charge iPod while off) 『I tried this unit out at the store and was quite pleased with the sound. I wanted a unit with built-in iPod docking, and this one had the best features and superb sound.
It does really sound nice, and you can control the iPod pretty effortlessly with the included remote, However, one MAJOR disappointment for me - the iPod will not charge when the unit is turned off. When you turn the unit off (standby) it puts the iPod in sleep mode.
The workaround is to turn on demo mode, but that just scrolls all sorts of colorful stuff on the screen, which would be distracting while trying to fall asleep. Considering I bought this unit for my bedroom, that's not really an option. What a letdown! I'd have given this 5 stars if the iPod charged while the unit was off.
Other than that, the unit is great. great sound, 5 EQ presets and XBASS setting, 5 disc CD changer and dual casette, which, admittedly, I do not plan to use. The radio gets good reception and sounds good as well.
Setup was straightforward, as was using the unit. I did not need to open the booklet at all, except to learn how to set the clock. I would never have guessed how to do that - it's pretty complicated.
The unit comes with 8 dock adapters that will fit most (especially newer) iPods. They follow the same numbering system as Apple, so if your ipod came with a dock adapter, look at the number on the back, and use the matching numbered adapter that was supplied. You could also just use the adapter that came with the iPod, but the supplied adapters are easier to remove / exchange if necessary. And, the Apple adapters are white, while the unit's adapters are black.
It also has a sleep function, and a record timer function that lets you set a time to record radio programs to cassette.
Finally, there is a headphone mini-jack output, and a line in mini-jack input, which is shared with the ipod input.
In closing, my one wish for this unit would be the ability to charge the ipod any time it is in the dock. However, due to the sound quality, I can partially overlook this.』
(CAUTION) 『The CD player did not work! When we called the company, they did not offer to send us a return slip. Caution. Amazon does not stand behind electronic sales and Sharp makes it difficult and expensive to return items if they arrive in bad, or nonworking condition.』 『This stylish yet practical mini component system is a perfect audio solution for any environment. This system comes complete with a docking slot for your iPod® device that not only plays your audio files from your iPod but also charges the iPod, 5 CD Multi Play Changer, Dual Cassette Decks, a Digital Tuner with Presets and a pair of 2-Way speakers. Enjoy your favorite music! Be your own D.J. and play a CD-R/RW disk with all your favorite WMA and MP3 hits.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Great sound quality, portable/expandable media, great battery life) 『I bought this little Sony Minidisc player as an alternative to the iPod. I bought an iPod ($400) that lasted less than a year. Nice. First the scroll wheel broke, then the hard drive crashed. Done with iPods! This device is now retro - it's at least 5 years behind the times. But look at what it does:
-Portable 1 GB discs that are encased in a durable plastic shell. Did I mention that you can put 45 hours on one disc? -Very small: you can definitely put this in your shirt pocket. About the size of a Gameboy SP. -Great sound quality: what is it about Sony music players that make them sound SO GREAT? -Great battery life: 25 hours on one AA battery -Store your music on little discs instead of your hard drive -Minidisc Media is small and durable. I have an old Minidisc player from 1992 (talk about retro!). It and my original discs are still around and sounding great.
On the bad side, you must own a PC to use the Sonic software. I have a Mac, so I have to use my old laptop. A minor inconvenience because once you put your music to the discs, you are done. Some complain about the software, but look at the alternative. You have to use iTunes to add music on an iPod right?』
(Just OK) 『This is the second minidisc player I've owned. My first one (Sony MZ-R30) was exceptional in quality so maybe it isn't fair to compare the two... but this newer one is slow to respond, awkward to open, and the control panel is slightly hard to see. The sound is fine. My main complaint is the slow operating speed and clumsiness of opening it to insert the disc. I probably would not recommend this item unless you don't care about ease of use.』
(Sony MZNH600D) 『I'd read a lot about the Hi-MD format so I wanted to check it out in person. I don't know how in the world I missed this when shopping, but this model DOES NOT HAVE A MICROPHONE, NOR ANY WAY TO USE ONE WITH IT! Well, shop twice buy once I reckon. To me that eliminates at least half of the usefulness of such a device, but it's my fault for not finding that out before buying.
So why the 4 stars? Because, as a player it's awesome. The Hi-MD format is everything I'd read, I can't for the life of me fathom why Sony isn't doing more to spread the use of MiniDisc. Yah SonicStage is a pain (though better than I expected from reviews, I guess Sony did improve it) but the Japanese lessons&music I put on the disc sounded absolutely fantastic. The interface on the machine is kinda clunky but for stuff like Japanese lessons that won't really matter too much since you won't be fishing around too much.
So as just a player, I really like this little booger. I've read that some people get 34+ hours of battery usage&I wouldn't doubt it. And the Hi-MD format is just terrific.
I'd love to have a more versatile machine using Hi-MD, that I could easily record things with, move files around under Linux, and use OGGs etc. with. But this machine ain't it. It's just too limited, and only because of the iron paw of Sony. Shame. With a mic jack, and some software tweaks, this would be a heck of a machine I could be happy with for years. Now that my little experiment's over it's probably heading to Goodwill.
Oh, and the folks I ordered it from (ship2you) did an absolutely superb job, thanks, it got to me in 2 days! I got a refurbished model for I think around $90(?) and everything was great.』
(The only way to listen to music) 『The 1 gig capacity and atracplus codec are reason enough to use HiMD. The fact that the media is removable makes this device even more attractive. If your hardrive player or flash player breaks and it will, or if the battery fails then you can't access any of the music on the player. In contrast, you always have your mini-discs. Minidiscs last longer than cds. I've had cds corrupt data in as few as 2 years. Minidiscs have a much longer life span. Minidiscs are rewritable a million times according to Sony, and act as a hard disc drive meaning you can delete and rearrange the music or data on the disc. Since the advent of HI MD minidiscs Sony has made this the only portable way to listen to music.』
(Only if Sony upgrade it to USB 2.0) 『The Pros: It's a thing of beauty. Some people say it's made of cheap plastic. Well may be true priced at $100.00+, but that aside I would have to disagree. Runs on a single AA battery for days. Sound quality is excellent for compress music. The bad . . . It uses the obsolete USB 1.0 so it take 45 min to 1 hr to transfer 1gb music or data. Sonicstage isn't music-sharing friendly.』 『G-Protection * up to 30 hours playback time * direct USB interface and software for high-speed recording from PC * stores music or data to high-capacity Hi-MD media * compatible with standard MiniDisc media』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (GREAT AND INGENIOUS INVENTION) 『The Sony MZ-N505, when it first came out, was like a miracle gadget. After years of allotting the minidisc storage capacity to a maximum of 74 or 80 minutes per disc, Sony invented the LP2 and LP4 recording modes which allowed at least three hours and five hours, respectively. A great product this truly is, and it almost surprised me that there was not the marketing breakthrough that would vanquish companies who were pushing the non-minidisc MP3 players.
I thought and still think that the competitors' products were inferior; however, the latter group had a dual advantage: where Sony was limited to the seemingly obsolete ATRAC/SonicStage software, their gadgets could download and burn CDs using Windows Media Player, Real Player, Napster and the like. This lone fact is what I think discouraged MD sales. Sony apparently has given up on this great invention, which I think is a shame.
Since the Sony MZ-505, there has been the HI-MD format, which allows a greater recording storage capacity than LP2 or LP4. Also, this particular line allows PCM quality recording but at a lower storage capacity. Still, the MZ-505 is a great item with its prior NET-MD capabilities. With the minidisc-compatible technology that has been created since 2002, when I purchased this item, there is so much that you can still do!
There are companies such as Xitel and M-Audio that have come out with driver updates and products that have made this particular product compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista so that you can access major nonsubscription MP3 and WAV file downloadable sources.
So for those who have thought of discarding their MD players and discs, I say don't! 』
(The advantage of the MD player is...) 『If you can stream it, you can record it. Anything that has a headphones output can be recorded into the MD. I'm talking about real time recording. Yes the Mp3 player can download music files more quickly but you can not record in real time with the Mp3 players. For example, I like to record internet radio stations. Also I have an internet music player service for $10 a month that allows me to listen to a HUGE selection of music all day long but I can not transfer any song to an Mp3 player with out actually buying the track for $1. Well as I said above... if you can stream it you can record it to MD... you know what I'm sayin? Also the long play of the MD allows about 150 minutes per MD. I use this rate for everything. Most of the internet DJ mixes (shows) I like are 2 hours long so it works well for me. Also I have about a dozed MD's that I keep in circulation, because they are re-recordable. I've erased and recorded on each disk god knows how many times. I own the Sony Recording MD Walkman MZ-R700... I bought it 6 years ago and it still plays/records... however its on its last leg... that is the reason I'm browsing through the Amazon store looking to buy a new one. Also a single AA battery will play for what I'm guessing to be about 40 hours, however a fresh AA will only record for about 1-2 hours (so keep the AC adapter handy for recording. Also there are 2 inputs for recording. One is the MIC in (yes you can also record live music or your professors lecture using a microphone) however i notice that input tends to introduce static and white noise. this can be a probem if you are hoping the MD player will automaticall create a new track number when it picks up a second or two of silence. the second input is optical. The MD player comes with a converter so you can convert the USB output to an Optical signal that records clean. One draw back to that I've noticed (and you computer folks out ther can solve this problem) that when you use the USB output the sound from the headphones output on your computer turns off. You can only monitor (listen) to what you are recording via the headphones output on the MD player... this sucks if you are trying to queue up songs in a mix or recording only segments of a radio program or a comedy show or something.』
(Just remember, this is not an MP3 player) 『I've been using MDs for almost 8 years now, and I can honestly say that, though they might not be for everyone, they're still better then either CDs or cassettes, portability-wise.
The biggest deterrent to these is that people read reviews of consumers who didn't know what they were getting into and completely slammed the product. THIS IS NOT AN MP3 PLAYER. It can't do all the things that MP3 players can do. You register it on one computer and all the files you download from that computer, you can upload them back on that SAME computer. You can't download from one computer, then upload onto another computer, or from cd to computer, or voice to computer, or MD to computer. But of course with the cheap MP3 players available, you can't really do some of that either.
Standard MDs hold from 74 to 500 minutes of music, depending on the compression format. That means that every disc is almost equivalent to one 512MB capacity MP3 player. The new Hi-MDs can take a standard disc and put up to 13.5 hours of music, or 810 minutes, equivalent to 800MB (at CD quality compression). But on the new Hi-MD discs, you can put up to 45 hours of music, or 2700 minutes, equivalent to a small iPod nano. Again, just remember that if you constantly move from one computer to the next, it might not be the wisest choice, although for laptop users, MDs might be a good choice for the price conscious.
You might think I'm a spokesperson for Sony or any other MD company (JVC, Aiwa, and others have made in the past; Sharp, and Panasonic still make), but I'm just someone who's been with them since the beginning, and am stil a fan of. As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather have a Hi-MD then an iPod, they come cheaper too. As for this particular model, the MZ-N505, mine is a few years old, don't know how old exactly, and it still plays fine, although it doesn't record anymore.
MDs are still very popular in Japan where they have completely replaced the cassette. In some new cars in america, you can still get a cassette deck, not in Japan. MD players there cost between [...] al the way to [...] for the Hi-MDs. They may never have caught on here, but they compete with the iPod over there, so they can't be all that bad.』
(Fantastic!!) 『The greatest player I have ever purchased. I own two models. The MZ-n505&the MZ-nf610 (type s) The MZ-n505 I use at work while I am on the job. I have had it for 2 years and it is still going. I have dropped it and god knows what else. I love having the option to put all of my music on a mini disk. Unlike the mp3 players where you have a limit or have to pay a fortune to expand it. And not counting these Ipods that are so small and delicate. The other model (MZ-nf610) that I have I use at home and comes with the fm tuner, I don't use it. I am not a big fan of FM radio anyways. Both models are great players. Also the option of having one rechargable double AA battery is the best. You can recharge the double AA while it is still in the player! I can listen to my NetMd 8hrs without having to recharge. Another way to save you money. Now on the sound quality if your record your music on the standard option it will sound great, but if you try to save space on downgrade your quality you can fit about 60 or more songs (give or take) on one mini disk. Overall this is my favorite portable audio player, and would buy from Sony again and definately a NetMD player!』
(indestructible) 『I have had this MD player for about 3 years now, and love it. At first, I thought it wouldn't be as good as an MP3 player but how wrong I was. I purchased an MP player for my 13 year old a year ago and it died in less than a year. First the casing wore out and evenutally the player was unusable. Meanwhile, this MD player kept on going. Both of my kids have used it and I have dropped it at least 50 times, usually it just keeps playing. I have had no issues with it. And, I haven't experienced the battery issues or software issues that people complain of. But I like to mix my MDs and then rarely change the music on each one, so there's not a lot of uploading once I get it onto my mini discs, it's basically there for good.』 『ThereM-^Rs not much more you could ask for with this high-speed Net MDM-^Y player from Sony. Besides looking good, it can dub MP3s or CDs at up to 32x when recording in LP4 mode. With the G-ProtectionM-^Y anti-shock system you'll never hear a skip, and the Digital Mega Bass« provides deep bass. Plus, the power consumption technology allows for a single M-^SAAM-^T battery to last for up to 56 hours of continuous playback! Now you can listen to your own mixes anywhere while doing just about anything.』 『Sony's MZ-N505 high-speed Net MD Walkman player/recorder records MP3s or audio CDs directly to minidiscs at up to 32x speed using a USB connection. Now, affordable minidisc media can store more than five hours of music per standard 80-minute minidisc. A single AA battery provides up to 56 hours of playback (in LP4 mode), and the player's easy-skip group/folder function lets you navigate minidiscs with ease.
In addition, this recorder supports multiple Internet audio formats, including MP3 and WMA, and enables ATRAC3 playback. ATRAC (Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding) is the data-compression scheme developed for minidisc, and ATRAC3--the format used by Sony's Memory Stick--offers even greater compression while maintaining near-CD quality. The Net MD Simple Burner QuickRip CD-dubbing application facilitates fast transfer of CDs to minidisc without the need to store files on a hard drive as an interim step. Simply launch the application and select the tracks you want to transfer to the player. (Actual transfer speed depends on your PC.)
The player records in standard mode for the richest sound quality or two different long-play modes for the most effective use of space. The bundled OpenMG Jukebox management software supports secure music downloads (including tracks from pressplay.com), organizes playlists, and titles tracks. As with all minidisc products, this Net MD player records from various sources and offers flexible audio editing tools. Minidisc media is affordable, durable, and re-recordable up to a million times without degradation.
Sony's ultra skip-free G-Protection technology reduces or eliminates skipping for active users who want uninterrupted music. The package includes OpenMG Jukebox software, QuickRip CD-dubbing application, one blank 80-minute minidisc, headphones, and a USB connecting cable. Net MD Walkman players are compatible with Microsoft Windows 98 SE, 2000, Me, and XP operating systems.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (I love it.) 『I bought one of these a few years ago and didn't pay anywhere near this ridiculous price. I got mine at Circuit City which has gone the way of the Dodo now, but I got a good deal. You have to buy the little mini-discs and each disc holds about 75 song and you can erase and rerecord freely. I like to put on a disc and just let it play though but you have the option of skipping around. The batteries last a long time and it's easy to download from your computer. (You do need a computer to make it work!) I don't mind carrying around a couple discs. They are only about 2X2. It's very sturdy and easy to use. I have an Ipod and this is much easier to find specific songs on.』
(Minidisc player) 『This minidisc did the basics of recording and playback very well, considering it was so inexpensive. The added feature of an FM radio was a pleasant surprise. Lotsa music for the buck and less expensive then the over-rated MP3,which is in the same ATRAC format.』
(sony mz-nf520d walkman) 『i love this product. the radio is a plus to me, though at times i have seen am/fm in the sellers text - but there is no am that i ahve yet to figure out. have never heard anything on the tv or weather portion (could be the area i am in). yet, have ordered myself another one as a backup.』
(Sony Net MD's Still Have Their Place) 『I read a lot of reviews, and I've learned two things: #1 Can't please everybody. #2 If you take TOO much stock in what you read, you'll never buy anything. Last year I was looking to buy a higher end keybaord and every good review I read, some others tanked it down. I don't ever before remember seeing such a wide scattered variety of opinions on this Sony Net MD, but here's mine. This for me, is perfect. I'd buy 10 of them. Some don't like the idea that you can't record other MD's back to your computer, or the softwarte or ipods are better or whatever. You may not use it for what I do, but this is perfect for 2 very important uses for me. I'm in a cover band (we do not write our own songs), but its so easy to use mini disks and the remotes for them. For practices, we use Sonys MDS-JE-480 home stereo MD player(about $150.00) It's better than using CD's (Cause you don't have to keep changing them for every time you need to listen to the next song), or mp3's, computers, or anything else I've EVER used. You can add, move, or delete songs as you need, or erase the MD completely to use over again(try that on a CD!). The other thing I use it for is playback of a baseball game. My other recorder records the game(xm radio has made this part a dream come true)and this unit is my playback, so I can listen to the games ANYTIME-ANYWHERE. And there's one more thing: It will play back my old music albums that are out of print. My other recorder can record digital or analog and the MD walkman will play either one back on the disk, and now with prices cheap, they're a steal...something for everybody!』

Its USB connection delivers burn rates at up to 32x for your MP3s and CDs. Using MD Simple Burner
MD Simple Burner allows you to record music from an audio CD in your computer to the Net MD, without first ripping the tracks to your computer.
Using SonicStage
SonicStage allows you to import audio to your computer from CDs and the Internet and then transfer the data to an MD.
The player's three-line LCD display provides album, artist, and song title information on a clean, single screen. There's an AM/FM/TV/weather radio built into its remote, as well as a headphone jack and headphones, but the single AA battery, which you'll need if you want to use the device away from your computer, is not included. Battery life is estimated at a maximum of 48 hours.

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Broke within 6 months of light usage) 『I liked the idea of CD like storage so I bought the MD recorder.., but this unit just broke within 6 months of very light use. I would stay away from Sony in the future.』
(Walkman is like the Silver Model, Comes with a radio. and High Speed) 『This Walkman is much better and good features, except it does not record from the radio. This recorder is just like the MZ-NF510 CK that comes with a car kit. One thing different about it that it has a radio on the remote control. The radio works good, but the problem is that you cannot hear the sound better than if you connected to another radio source while recording, the volume control is on the remote control for the radio. Another thing about this model, is that it has high speed recording which is good for Sonic Stage users who make a lot of mini discs and needs the power supply, instead of just the batteries. This walkman would be a great peripheral device for making unlimited amounts of mini disc compilations. There is no microphone input so you would need a mic mixer to do live performances or home recordings to the line input.
Reception : The radio however is ok, the AM reception is poor and FM and TV (well no TV signals after 6/12/2009) is mediocre. This one is good for just local FM station listening, but like I said you cannot record your favorite radio music programs. The weather radio reception is poor.

(great product, great mp3 alternative) 『I bought this little guy 2 years ago right in the heart of the MP3 player craze. Everyone I knew had an ipod or some alternative, which they paid $300-$400 dollars for. I did a little research and had always been curious about this technology since I had seen it in the mid-90's. After price and review comparisons, I picked up the Net-MD 610... and boy am I happy.
A friend warned me when I bought it telling me that he was done with anything that played an external media source (discs) because they will always skip. But after over 2 years and having dropped it several times. Once recently at the gym where it skidded off the treadmill and onto the floor several feet away, not only did it not skip, but it kept playing. The various compression formats this player has available to it makes it able to hold up to and over 5 hours of music. All for less than $100. I say thats pretty darned good.
My only regret is that I bought this just before the Hi-MD format came out which made it able to nearly double its capacity... but I'm very pleased and still haven't bought an MP3 player. So if you are thinking about a player, check it out. You get a FM/TV tuner with external recording available. (Record directly from CD or radio) Which my girlfriend loves. Also the discs are cheap, about $8 for 5. Which ups your capacity for very very cheap. And they can be burned an infinite number of times, rearranged in their queue, and have multiple or single songs deleted. It acts like an MP3 player inside a small little disc. Check out this guy before blindly buying into an MP3 player. It might not be for you, but maybe it will.』

The MZ-NF610 is compatible with the RealOne music player and the pressplay.com online music subscription service. The Easy Skip group-folder function helps organize songs into albums or groups. Once the songs are transferred to the MZ-NF610, it's easy to skip from group to group. Besides the bundled SonicStage software and SonicStage simple burner application, the MZ-NF610 includes MoodLogic software, which goes beyond typical jukebox applications, letting you compile music by mood or tempo rather than simply by artists and song titles.
MoodLogic corrects file information by identifying and retitling mislabeled tracks during ID3 tag cleaning. It also has a feature called Music Marker, which lets you "tag" music during playback. Once the device is reconnected to a PC, MoodLogic retrieves the marks, connects you to the Musiclub Web site, and provides information about the song and artist and links to download new tracks, purchase CDs, or discover similar artists.
