SETUP
Honestly, the setup for a home theater system is incredibly easy, especially relative to some of the other complicated setups out there. The speaker wires are color coded on the end that plugs into the console, so you know exactly which goes where, without having to eyeball the cord all the way back to the speaker. The speakers themselves are also labeled, so you know exactly where to place them once they're hooked up in the back.
I am definitely taking advantage (as you should) of the HDMI switching, since I have an Apple TV, Xbox and DVR hooked up to my system. I bought several 6' cables, plugged them all into the console and ran 1 cable from that to my TV, and it's done! Now whenever I switch my input on the Sony, it automatically updates both sound (obviously) and the output on my TV. I eventually plan to get a HDMI projector, which works great with a system like this, since all it will require is a single HDMI cable connected to it to work.
SOUND QUALITY
The sound quality is really pretty good--especially considering you are spending<$300 on the system. The sub woofer, although not individually powered, still puts out great bass for movies, games, etc. The center channel puts out crisp voice, and isn't muffled at all by all the other sounds going on. I've watched blu-rays using this sound system (at my brother-in-law's house on his system) and it's great, when using HDMI.
BEST FEATURE
Again, as I keep saying, the best feature on this system is the 3 HDMI inputs that support automatic switching. I have greatly simplified/cleaned up the amount of cables running in my home theater system, because all I need now is 4 HDMI cables (3 for the devices, 1 for the tv.) Just switch your input on your AV remote and your television/projector updates automatically. Also, since it's HDMI, you are ensured the best possible sound/picture for your system.
CONS
There are obviously some cons here, but they are not deal breakers at all. The biggest one I can think of is that the subwoofer is a passive sub, but again, the quality is still good enough, that it shouldn't make you hesitate to purchase the sound system.
Another con is that the cables are proprietary, due to the whole plug-in-play style of how they work. (One end on the speaker side is your typical black/red connection ,but on the other side is a plug that you just hook into the base system.) So this means that if your surround speakers dont quite go far enough in your room, you are mostly screwed. You'd have to splice in some extra speaker wire to get it to work. This is an unfortunate oversight by the Sony crew...So just make sure you dont have any special speaker placement needs, or at least, be prepared to do some tweaking.
CONSENSUS
Buy this system! If you only have about $300 to spend and have several HDMI devices already, then it's honestly the best system you can get.』

At this price, really, you cannot complain. Will you be blown away with $1,000 dollar system quality? No. Will you be pleased? Yes! I bought this expecting the worst and was pleasantly surprised. At 227 dollars shipped, you cannot beat it. The sound is great for the price. The highs sound good and the bass is perfect for an apartment. If you're looking to be blown away in your custom home theater room, spend some money and get and nice Onkyo. If you have an apartment, or a small room that you want low levels of higher quality sound, this is for you! I live in an apartment with a 16 x 10 living room. The wires for the surround did not need to be spliced and extended. I expected to have to cut them. I recently set up a Pioneer surround system in my buddy's apartment and we had to splice both rear speaker wires in a space that is smaller than my living room. The speakers are also wall mountable. They have the notch for a screw/hammer head to insert into the rear and mount. It doesn't look the best, but it's better than spending 100 dollar on shelves to set them on.
As mentioned above, the bass levels are weak. Another reviewer stated that he bought a different sub that was powered. You may want to. The way it comes from the factory is decent. It gives a bit of a bump, but nothing near a quality set. For instance, my computer speakers (Klipsch Promedia 2.1) have a sub that is half of the size and ten times more powerful. It does the job, just not well. As for the mids... they are, eh. The sound is there, but it's nothing award winning. You can hear voices and what not but the highs and bass are more pronounced. This is how I listen to TV/Music so it does not bother me, but most people it may. For the price, it is great. It has proprietary connectors, so if you were to get a different set of speakers to hook up to it, you'll have to splice them. That's not world ending, but an inconvenience. The menu system sucks. If you don't know anything about audio, you won't understand it. Read the manual and it explains it a good bit, but it could have been done a lot better. An on screen display would have been infinitely better.
Overall, I'll still give it five stars. You can't expect gold when you pay for copper. If you go into it with that attitude, you will be pleasantly surprised. Add to the mix a Comcast cable box remote and it takes some sleuthing work to figure out how to make the Comcast remote turn both the TV and Sound system on/off and to change channels and adjust the sound. The key is to figure out how to program the Aux channel on the Comcast remote on a key by key basis to control the sound system.

(channel balance improvement) 『More important than the extra 150 watts of audio power the CT-500 offers over the CT-100, this Sony upgrade has nicely balanced the power between the audio channels. The CT-100 produced low center channel audio while the bass and side channels were excellent. Now I can keep the volume relatively low and still hear good volume and articulation from the center channel. This is exactly what I was hoping for when purchasing this unit. Also the various "sound field" options (news, music, sports, etc.) have a much more pronounced effect on the output characteristics than what I experienced with the CT-100. (LG hit a Home Run with this Home Theater) 『The LG 977 Home Theater in a Box is a fantastic combination of Blu-Ray player, 5.1 Surround Sound System, Netflix Streaming Media Player, Pandora, YouTube, AM-FM radio, as well other nice options like Roxio CinemaNow. First, the Blu-Ray player is fast loading and works perfectly. Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, the streaming Netflix player is fantastic. This is a great improvement, as I have struggled for the past year with a less than stellar Samsung player. Previously I had a Samsung BD-P2550, which had several issues with both dvd playback and Netflix streaming. The Samsung was prone to freeze and skip, and would often begin playing DVD audio while displaying the main system menu. I kept thinking Samsung would update the firmware and resolve these issue, but none fix ever came.
Happily there are no issues with this LG system. Setup is a breeze, the sound quality is stunning and the software is solid. In short this is a fantastic system and well worth the money. You will not be disappointed.』
(Still Waiting...&Redeemed) 『So I'll get right to it. Amazon has always done right be me in the past, and this review isn't so much about Amazon.com as it is about LG. Nevertheless, I'm still a little thrown off by the experience I'm presently having. The setup was easy. It didn't take me any more than 30 minutes to set everything up and get things going, seeming I've had a LG system in the past. The inputs in the back are exactly what I need, so nothing wrong there. The only problem I'm currently having with the system is the subwoofer has little to no power to it. I'm very experienced with Audio systems, so I disconnected and reconnected the subwoofer's wires and rechecked the system's volume and the volume of each speaker connection. At 6db for my surround sound speakers, you can hear everything in that register. On my previous LG system, the subwoofer at 6db was able to vibrate all the wall fixtures...and the volume was set no greater than 12. However, with this system, I could barely hear anything coming from the subwoofer during the speaker setup test. To make sure I wasn't crazy, I played 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' at some of the loudest points of each film. Any audiophile will tell you those films boast some of the most dynamic sound designs and demands. I had to turn the volume up to level 15-20 just to feel something. Keep in mind, on my previous LG system, that volume level would have gotten me evicted. I played around with it for a quite some time, trying to make sure I didn't forget anything. Unfortunately, I had to return it today--just 48 hours after opening the box. I'll save all of you some heartache, right now. If you EVER speak to LG, please keep in mind that their customer service ABSOLUTELY sucks! Their products are great, but the representatives are mindless idiots, reading scripts from a computer screen half a world away from here! There's no empathy or connection with the representatives because it's just a job for them. How is this different from most companies right now? IT ISN'T! But, when a customer is speaking about the technical aspects of a system and you don't understand what the hell that customer is saying, just say so without treating the customer like he/she is frakkin idiot! But, I thank GOD for Amazon's return policy. I UPS-ed the system back to Amazon and I'm waiting on my replacement. I'm praying that the next system is fully operational without any defects. When it gets here, I WILL have a better review for the system. Stay tuned...
11/4/09; It's a few days after I returned the malfunctioning LG system to Amazon.com, and they've issued a replacement for it. Looking at the inconvenience this little problem has caused, a good guy at Amazon to whom I give great BIG UPS named Jeramy W. helped me out by overnighting the package. I can say even more about a Jennifer working for Amazon who said she'll be handling all followups after the system is delivered to make sure everything is continuously in working order. The system will be here tomorrow. Again, I have to compliment Amazon on their customer service. These guys have made sure that my situation is resolved in a very timely manner--a compliment I'm unable to extend to LG's customer service department. When everything is connected tomorrow, I'll post an updated score. Cool?...
11/6/09; So everything turned out exactly as I thought it would. The system, for lack of a better word, is perfect. The subwoofer is wonderful, and I never thought I would ever hear a more perfectly balanced HTiB system than my last one, but I stand corrected.

Having HDMI inputs is fantastic because we run our cable box through the player. The only downside is I wish it had more audio inputs. It does have optical audio in as well as in AV input (which we hooked the Wii through) so not bad but if you ever wanted to run something else through the speakers there aren't any other inputs. But I am very happy with the all in one product. The Netflix streaming is fantastic (Netflix is not partnered with all companies - so if this is an important feature to you make sure you check if they participate - I think Samsung and Insiginia also have Netflix streaming). (First Blu Ray Home Theater) 『This is my second HT but my first Blu Ray HT. I got this bundled in with a Sony Bravia 52 W5150 LCD TV two weeks ago from HH Gregg for $1800. It seems to be a great package. The sound quality on this unit is amazing and the wireless rear speakers work exceptionally well. For me, the powered subwoofer is a non-issue - it's alot of low frequency sound (terrifies my dog)! The manual is a little shaky and the buttons are small on the top right of the unit. This receiver can receive internet through an ethernet cable but I would have preferred wireless connectivity like my PS3. I have my PS3 audio going through the TV and into the Blu Ray receiver -- it sounds a little too life like through the HT system! The tuner (both AM and FM) is nice but the IPOD adapter is unexpected and works well. I would have liked a longer IPOD adapter cable, however. Since I have all Sony components (TV, PS3, BluRay) all of the remotes work seamlessly together. The front speakers look modern and complement the system well. I'm not an audiophile but I'm very happy with this unit -- it is dramatically superior to my previous DVD based HT. Even my normally "non techno" wife likes it.』

(good speakers, cheap price) 『These speakers are a great value at around 100 dollars. They work great and sound amazing for small speakers. The sub is has its own volume control and I have yet to turn it past a quarter of the way up because the thumping, clear base shakes the house fairly well. The only issues with this system are minor. First the speaker wire is only about a 24 gauge, which for small rooms is perfectly fine. On a positive note there is 100ft of this wire included. The only other minor problem is they are 6 ohm speakers. Most receivers will have an option for running this so it's a fairly simple fix. So this is a perfect set for people on a budget but in want of great surround sound for a small to medium sized room. These would even work well in a large room as long as you aren't trying to blast the speaker volume loud enough to wake the neighbors.』

(good all in one stereo system) 『Pros: It includes all of the things you need for a decent stereo system. The AM/FM stereo is a nice extra that isn't talked about much since you also have Pandora internet radio. The other extras that I discovered after the system was updated with a simple internet download included YouTube and CinemaNow. I see this system being more useful as new utilities come out that are downloadable for this system. The others include Blue Ray/DVD/CD player, iPod/iPhone dock player (even 3GS), USB port for flash drive player for photo slideshow with music in the background and music in MP3/WMV formats. I wanted to point out that the iPod dock allows you to see your iPod/iPhone songs on the TV screen and control the iPod with the remote control in 2 different ways.
Cons: The system is a bit tricky to figure out. I had to read through a downloaded manual to figure out all the different features since they don't show on the TV screen until you press the correct button on the remote. The wires included for the speakers are a little cheap but can be upgraded. The TV keeps blanking out but I think that is because I am using a 720p 26 inch Westinghouse cheapo. I am going to upgrade to a true 1080p and see if that goes away.
Others: the remote is universal so there are codes for other devices. When you plug your new iPod/iPhone in, the LG logo comes up on the iPod screen. I am looking for a TV that has a digital optical output and Dolby 5.1 decoder so that I can play the TV sound through the stereos digital optical input.』
(Great option for easy home theater and moving up to Blu-ray) 『We purchased this LG BD system at the same time that we bought an LG 37LH40 TV. We were going to just get the TV but the store had one of the BD systems setup as a demo and offered us a good deal if we bought both, and having always wanted a home theater system and wanting to go with Blu-ray this was a good option for us. Setup is very easy, outside of connecting all of the speakers, which is not difficult, just a little time consuming depending on how accessible you unit might be (but you get that with any surround setup). The picture quality is great and it can put out a lot of sound if you want it, especially bass - the subwoofer will make the room shake if you let it. Some battle scenes we've watched in movies require you to turn down the volume or risk permanent damage to your hearing and your house, haha. We haven't hooked it up to the internet yet to try out any of those features so I cannot comment on those, but others here have so you can use them for reference on those issues. I can say that AM and FM radio reception for us is very good (and my older stereo could not get a great signal for us - we live very close to a small airport) so that is certainly an upgrade for us. Upscaled DVDs look very good, though not as amazing as a true Blu-ray disk. This system is really a great value - you'll spend $150-$200 just on a BD player alone right now, so getting a good player plus all of the speakers in one great package for not much more money is a great way to get an instant BD home theater setup. (Also, this integrates wonderfully with the LG HDTV - they recognize each other, respond to each other well, etc. Couldn't be easier to use together.)
I would give it 4.5 stars if that were an option, or possibly 5, but I haven't tried out all of the internet features yet so I don't feel comfortable giving it a perfect score just yet. I would have no qualms recommending it, however. Very happy so far.』
(Great Piece of Equipment) 『This system is great. What I was most concerned with in buying this system was the convergence of the Web, television and music in our family room. This system seemed to meet all my requirements on paper and I was satisfied when I received the box.
Setup was simple and everything you need is in the box except for one thing: it needs to be near your router so that you can network it. My router is upstairs so I got around that through powerline networking which allows you to send your network through your power outlets. Works like a charm.
The bottom line is that I get my Netflix movies directly through the BluRay player...no waiting for the mailman for most movies. I also get FM radio and Pandora as well as my cable TV.

Finally I mounted speakers on the wall yesterday after a long wait(it took me and my friend 3 hours to install all the plates and to connect all the wires behind the wall. It's built in so when you mount speakers on the wall they look a little weird first time but they don't catch my eyes anymore. THE SOUND ON THIS SYSTEM IS ABSOLUTELY SUPERB!!! once you get all the wires strung and the speakers hooked up there is a microphone setup that you MUST run in order to get the maximum effect from the system, it will analyze the acoustics of the room, the distance the speakers are from each other and then optimize the system for YOUR house setup. Just be sure and READ THE DIRECTIONS before you start string wires, this is a complicated system and you should review ALL the instructions before you do anything. I must say that i spent around $1500 on a Pioneer system with 7.1 sound and JBL professional level speakers and this system absolutely blows the Pioneer away!!!! Never thought i would have believed it but its true. It has 4 HDMI hookups, we used a Samsung Blu-Ray player and Sanyo 42" HD TV with the system and it absolutely rocks the walls, just because it costs less than $500 you would think it was maybe inferior BUT NOT TRUE!!! It also has plenty of other hookups for just about anything you want to throw at it, CD, other DVD hookups, Cable/Sat, for your TV sound to come thru this system This is a fantastic buy and if you are considering a Surround Sound System you will definitely be glad you bought this one. (Panaramic Perfect Sound) 『I was a theatre manager for close to 21 years and believe me, if you want a home theatre sound system that can match or even better than any cinema sound, this Onkyo is your ticket to Perfect PANARAMIC Sound.
First natually read the manual and DO set up speakers with mic, its a breeze and each speaker is perfectly calibraed. I am in AWE of how fantastic this system is. The words 'FANTASTIC', 'SENSATIONAL' and "WOW" is what folks say that have dropped by to experience, with the refane "it sounds like being in a movie theatre'.
I tested 3 movies when first set up: STAR WARS: ATTACK OF THE CLONES, OPEN RANGE and KING KONG 05. My brother had seen CLONES in a theatre with excellent surround sound and he was blown away with how exact the sound of this Onkyo matched real true theatre sound. Open Range and Kong were the 2 that knew had equally good surround to Clones. In Open Range, the thunder and rain made you feel like you were in the middle of it all, the gunfights were the same. When Kong roars, it will bring you out of your seat. I am NOT a big football fan, yet, it makes you feel like you are one of the crowd. This is "WOW" system.
The only draw back is the speaker wire, I am going to upgrade to 16 gage, didnt have in when we set up. The wire for left speakers were not long enough. I definately suggest to upgrade wire to 16 gage.
My only regret is that I didnt get the 6200, I read a CNET review that dolby pro logic IIz wasnt perfected (to upgrade to a 9.1 or 11.1) was reason that went with the 5200 but if had to do over for the few additional $$$ should have got the 6200.
Now, there are various sound type settings, I use dolby pro logic IIx as it does give all 8 channels: converts stereo&dolby 5.1 and gives the exact true theatre sound.
And finally, I want to thank Onkyo for pricing a SUPERIOR sound system that the average Joe and Jane can afford even in this age of the ObamaNation that wants us on third world status.

(2 broken subwoofers) 『I ordered this surround sound system after some evaluation. The installation wasn't too complicated, except for the fact that the receiver requires you to use both an HDMI cable along with an optical to trasmit both audio and video. After all seven speakers were installed and all settings were put into place the subwoofer was plugged in and was nonfunctional. So after calling Onkyo; Amazon sent me an entire new system to replace the subwoofer. Turns out after I got the new system, subwoofer #2 was nonfunctional as well. The subwoofers are simple plug and play so there was no tricks about it.
So I promptly returned both of them to Amazon.
Speakers are great. Installation not too difficult. NONFUNCTIONING MACHINERY. I probably won't be purchasing anything ONKYO for some time.』

(Great system for the price) 『I needed multiple HDMI inputs and also something that would let me play music from my iPod while I decide on whether to add an AppleTV to the mix. I currently have a digital cable box&blue ray DVD player hooked up. Set up was a breeze. The color coded speaker wires for each speaker was a nice touch, however I ended up pulling my own wire through the house so didn't use it. A word of caution - the listening mode is very important. The default setting on mine didn't product any center channel sound (no voices on TV/movies) and it took me a while to figure that one out. On the flip side, the technical support folks at Onkyo were very helpful and patient with me. Also, be aware that the HDMI just passes through to the TV. The receiver doesn't do anything with it and you will need a seperate digital connection from the source to the receiver for the sound. I at least knew this going in.
