After years of experience in darkroom printing, this is the first printer I have found that truly gives you darkroom quality, if not better than darkroom! I was in 35mm photography for years (printing with a Phillips Tricolor) before finally switching over to digital. I finally made the switch about 5 years ago and although my photography looked great on the computer, until now I had never found a printer that I was really happy with. The Pro9000MKII gives the most realistic color reproduction that I have seen, as well as wonderful B&W production. It is easy to use although a little slow on the warm-up and and the noise level level is a little too much, but once it is ready to print, I defy anyone to able to tell the difference between the 9000's prints and those printed in darkroom from a film camera. Unbelievable quality and true color reproduction.
I'm sure there is probably something out there that may make a better print, but if there is I sure can't afford it! For the money, this is THE ONE!

After 5 months of no activity (and no cartridge in the unit), I found that the printer is unusable because of an ink clog. Repeated self-cleanings over a series of days were of no help. I contacted a repair center and it would cost $120 to fix (which is not worth it). The technician said that on this style of printer you need to print a photo each week to keep the ink from drying inside it.
It is a great printer when it is used frequently. Just don't let it sit unused for weeks at a time or you will invite problems.』

(Big Disappointment) 『I bought this printer to replace 2 (I bought the same one twice) HP Photosmart 8250s because after a couple of years of use they started telling me that the paper tray was empty, when it most assuredly was not. I tried all sorts of fixes, like adding more paper, deleting the job in Print Manager, tweaking Device Manager, to no avail. Other than that fatal flaw, that printer was extremely easy to use.
NOT so with this one. Out of the box, the install program failed and required me to find the most recent HP Photo Gallery software and install it. Then I could reinstall the printer. The print setup is way more complicated that I am used to and must be done every time I print something. The initial print quality was awful - too yellow and too dark. I have already wasted a lot of photo paper and ink trying for something acceptable. It has required modifications to the printer controls (which took hours of experimentation) to make the changes permanent, but I am not satisfied yet.
I'll probably be looking for something else, as I can't see how this one is ever going to be a winner.』

(Great CD/DVD printer) 『I was looking for an economical way to print nice colorful CDs and DVDs for a small business of mine. I had previously used the laser engraving method but was not pleased with its clarity. I researched some very expensive disc labeling machines but learned that HP had a line of Photosmart printers that would also print directly on the CD/DVD. I would agree the included software is poor if you want to vary from the designs included, but I developed a Photoshop template that works nicely. This HP D7560 it prints much faster than the laser method I was previously using (Lightscribe), DVDs look professionally made, and the only negative feature would be the amount of ink it uses. Two criticisms only. This printer doesn't come w/ a USB cable. When I called Canon about it, they said that they are no longer including USB cables to save customers money (ha, ha) because most people are replacing printers nowadays. My frustration is that this is a photo printer and not the main one, thus you actually do need a separate USB cable. Plan on purchasing one separately.
Secondly, when you are printing from your memory card (super easy) you are very limited in editing options. You cannot shift or crop the image. That said, I went to hook it up to the computer, but can't because of the missing cable. Frustrating glitch on such a super quality product.
Overall, we are thrilled w/ the print quality. Definitely worth purchasing.』

Cons: not quite 4X6 prints (the are slightly smaller) only holds 18 sheets of paper at atime Ink and paper is kind of expensive, and not always easy to find. The highest amount of prints per ink package is 36 (that's the biggest ink ribbon I found).
If you need a true 4X6 printer, then this will not work, and if you need to print large quantities, this is not a good printer for the job.

This printer is replacing an old Epson Stylus Photo 780 that I've had for years. I was really unhappy with the Epson because the ink heads clogged up constantly. I also wanted the newest printer possible, since I've had problems with other devices not updating their drivers, so this printer fit the bill.
The Canon printer has been wonderful for me so far. It was easy to set up and install and worked right away. I'm using Snow Leopard on a Mac, so I had to download the actual driver from Canon's web site, but this is easy to do and pretty self-explanatory.
I love that the printer is all enclosed. The regular paper sits in a tray at the bottom, and everything can be closed up so that dust doesn't get into it. Photo paper is loaded at the rear.
This printer has individual ink cartridges, a plus in my opinion. I am using it lightly (10-15 regular color pages, 1-2 photos per week) so I have not dented the supply level on the ink cartridges, and can't really comment on how fast the ink runs out. The print quality is pretty good for the regular paper, and very good for photos. I was very impressed with the photos that I printed, they were sharp and the color was great.
The software drivers are adequate and not too confusing. I found this printer very easy to use and of good quality. I'm very happy with it, and it's miles better than my old Epson.

The fact is that if it were a car, it would be the number one model traded in during Cash for Clunkers, since this printer eats ink like Al Gore wastes fuel flying everywhere, and than some. It isn't just on the high end settngs either, as even on fast quality and with standard paper it drains both your ink and your budget. If you have the money to burn, you'll get great prints. If not, look for an older model like the 4200 or 4300, both of which I've owned (the 4700 was a replacement for the 4300 that lasted years and printed thousands of pages per month without sending me to the poor house over ink). I have bought Epson Ink Jet printers ever since the first one came out, and the quality and amount of ink needed has gotten worse with each new generation. I would presume greed has taken over and it is more about money than quality. I find myself using it less and less as I can barely print ten pictures before I'm looking at buying new ink jet cartridges. And even that MIGHT be OK, if the quality of the pictures were good, but they are worse than the ones I printed years ago on the first printer. And to top it all off, the absolute worst experience I've ever had with customer service was when I called to get help with the printer. I was sent to somewhere overseas and talked to people who couldn't understand my issue, couldn't communicate at all. It was ridiculous. I would rather pay less and simply not have support. This is my last Epson.』
(Excellent printer for artists&designers.) 『I have been working with the Epson 1400 large format printer as part of a networked printer bank in a professional design studio for just over a year, and have been impressed with its ability to reliably produce high-quality, accurate large format prints even under heavy use.
Our office uses this printer almost every day for printing proofs of catalogs, product artwork, packaging artwork, mockups to show to product distributors, sales brochures, and other design-related purposes. During crunch times we may run as many as 50-100 large-format prints through this printer in a single day as we update designs and put together proofing documents to send to our printers.
I've worked with a lot of large-format printers over the years both as a design student and a professional, and I'm not impressed easily, but this printer has won my admiration. It has reliably withstood heavy abuse and continued to work properly despite countless network configuration changes, thousands of prints, and a healthy dose of user error.
If you're having trouble getting prints that look like what you see on your screen, make sure that your document is set to a "CMYK" color format and the color rendering for the printer is set to "perceptual." When my office first got our Epson 1400 we were having some trouble getting accurate color rendering until we discovered this, and it makes a huge difference in what prints look like.
For the very best results make sure you use Epson brand paper. We experimented with some off-brand papers at first and weren't happy with the results. After a lot of trial and error we've found that that the Epson Presentation Paper Matte provides good results for proofing documents, and we occasionally use the stiffer Epson Premium Presentation Paper Matte when we want to cut out packaging designs so we can fold them together to make sure the sizing is accurate.
Like all inkjet printers it uses ink fairly quickly and not all office supply stores carry the ink this printer uses, so it's important to keep backup ink cartridges at all times. Since this printer uses a total of 6 cartridges (Cyan, Light Cyan, Magenta, Light Magenta, Yellow, Black) this can be a fairly pricey investment, but if you ever find yourself printing with a deadline it's worth it in the long run.
Because of its size and associated costs this isn't an "everyday" kind of printer that should be used for printing e-mails and MapQuest directions, but for design students and professionals who want accurate color rendering from a reasonably-priced printer that is reliable, easy to use, and has great customer support, the Epson 1400 is an excellent choice.

(Great printer, ink-thirsty) 『After my Epson 960 photo printer finally gave up (started printing with banding and other problems, and Epson never created a driver for Vista), I got the 1400. I print primarily 4x6 borderless photos for family, with the occasional enlargement. But I am a fussy enthusiast who has owned 15+ cameras over 35 years. The print colors are excellent -- better than the 960, and I thought the 960 was quite good. Epson claims the new Claria dye inks will last longer than previous dye ink formulations, so I hope that turns out to be true. Time will tell. The best test is a photo on a fridge in a bright, sunny kitchen for a year or two...
The one annoying thing with this printer is it drinks ink! I thought the 960 used a lot. The 1400 is at least as thirsty, and the cartridges are $16 instead of $11! Epson claims the new cartridges are "high-capacity", which is, I guess, supposed to justify the price. They don't seem to last any longer than the ones in the 960. You will spend much more on ink than on paper, so buy good paper!
One more thing -- Epson printers can be fussy. If you let them sit, they will need to run through a "clean" cycle, which uses even more ink. Be careful when loading paper and making adjustments -- don't force anything or you will be getting a remanufactured printer (if printer is still under warranty) which will likely behave slightly differently than the one you got originally.
Color-matching is excellent with Epson paper. I use Epson Premium Semi-Gloss. Once I Figured out how to use the right color profiles with Photoshop, the match was as good as I used to get on the 960. I think.
So, overall, I am very pleased with the prints, which is what counts most. If you are looking to get a printer in the hopes of saving money relative to printing at a drug store or photo place, don't. It will cost you more to own and run your own printer. But if you want full control and convenience, and sometimes want to print big enlargements, the 1400 is a great option.
If you want to print black and white, or want true archival prints, look to the R2880 and related printers.』
(Great Photo Printer) 『I've wanted a photo lab, but couldn't afford one. I was cool with Epson, because my Photo 925 was a bust, but my month old 1400 is a great printer. From 4x6 to 13x19 I have been getting nothing but wonderful prints. In order to achieve this, I do use a screen monitor and ICC profiles, but after all of the calculations are done, the printer has to do its job and this one does splendidly. If you are a fairly serious amateur photographer (I use my printer only for photos) this is a great buy today. I couldn't be more pleased.』
(Trash) 『I'm going to keep this short because honestly, this printer isn't worth my time (or yours). When it prints correctly, it prints well, but this is a rare event. I picked up this printer after the printhead on my Canon i9900 went bad (after years of heavy usage). In comparison this Epson is awful. It prints at the wrong scale and in the wrong position on the page time and time again. I've worked through various settings and print from various file formats and programs and it prints correctly about 10% of the time. In addition, the paper feed is incredibly poor, requiring sheets to be repositioned for every page printed. An absolute nightmare to my workflow. Maybe my printer is a lemon, but regardless, the Epson software is nothing special either.
Maybe for the discounted price this printer is worth it for some - but not me. I'd gladly pay the extra money for a new Canon if I could go back and do it over.

I use it frequently to scan both 35mm format and medium format. I absolutely love the quality it gives. I scan usually at 1200 dpi in professional mode which takes a bit of extra time but it does not feel unbearably slow. It took me some time to get used to, but once you get the hang of it, scanning is a breeze and even enjoyable. Digital Ice Technology is amazing when your film has scratches or dust from the lens on it. Also, I love the post-processing capability for simple things like contrast, hue, and brightness which saves me steps in Photoshop. This scanner is great for those who would like to experiment in film. Sometimes I will get film developed only for cheap at a local drugstore and then just scan them in, saving me money on having to buy a cd or prints each time.』

(Epson Photo Scanner) 『I received the scanner within a week. I have already scanned 300 slides. The quality is pretty good, especially since some of the slides are 38 years old. It does take about 20 minutes to scan 4 slides, but I just do other things while I am waiting.

The frame guides included are for limited size, so you may have to improvise or purchase as extra. Regardless of size negs or photos I have processed, this unit has done very well. It has showed no signs of problems. From past knowledge I have learned not to stack books, etc on the top lid, (when not in use) nor do I use this unit for much of anything else, (it is a photo scanner) altho I do documents and such, but never lay anything too heavy on the scan glass. For example, to get instructions for loading and scanning a film strip you have to wade through a cumbersome file-a so-called User Guide. (Very Nice Product - Totally Met Expectations) 『Let me say up front that, because the V700 ships with a SilverFast image management program, this is essentially a joint review of device and software.
We're a family of photographers with a lot of legacy negatives and slide material, some ours, some inherited from our parents. We've tried several scanners, with so-so results, and found them slow and somewhat clunky to use. Which meant we made little headway with the huge quantity of material we were trying to get into digital format.
The reviews convinced us to try the V700, and we've been delighted. First, I won't say it's perfect - at this price point, we didn't expect to have a totally professional experience. If it were possible, we'd probably give it a 4.5 instead of a 5. Some of the glitches noted by others can be at least mildly irritating. Still, even with the basic SilverFast software shipped with it, it works much better than anything else we've tried. (And using the SilverFast Studio Ai with ME makes it even better - you have to order this separately, but you can get it as a download.)
When used with the shipped SilverFast program, the device is intuitive, which results in a fast learning curve. (The videos on the SilverFast support site are extremely helpful should a question arise.)
What has impressed us the most is the adjustability of the import controls, especially the ability to adjust F-stops 3 up or down on negative imports, which literally brings most heretofore unviable negative images "back from the dead." As to transparencies, the adjustments provided for their import are also helpful. If you combine this adjustment capability with Photoshop controls, it is truly amazing how much life you can return to images so faded or discolored that they're almost invisible to the naked eye. Evidently there's a lot more information left on even the worst of old slides and negatives than our cursory examination led us to believe.
Also, we like the speed. The scan process is reasonable as to time required. Also, the ability to scan multiple images at once is cool. Which reminds me of the plastic holder issue. The V700 ships with a good assortment of sizes. Still, it would have been nice to have been offered the option of purchasing spares with the scanner at perhaps somewhat less than the rather breathtaking price charged by after-market vendors like SilverFast.
As to ICE, unlike the experience of other reviewers, we definitely notice a difference when using ICE, especially on images with large areas of solid color. If you want to use ICE, do go through the steps of specifying exactly how you want to use it, as this very much affects not only speed but also the end output. The degree of detection and correction sensitivity that you set is critical. If you set the sensitivity high, you can get rid of just about any dust, etc., but the tradeoff for this much "cleaning up" is a significant degree of image softening. A setting somewhere in the middle seems to work best. We don't use ICE for closeup people images, instead doing any cleanup in Photoshop. Also, at least in our opinion, we would not use ICE to clean up material that is going to be reproduced in print form.
There's more one could say, but I think the above is what we've observed from our experience that would matter to most users.
