(easy to install-works with 405)
『Purchased for use w/405. Easy to install and reads speed and cadence effectively. wireless is great. Also speed sensor is located on rear wheel which allows for speed reading when used on bike trainer. Nothing fancy...but do job as intended w/out hassle.』

(Speed Sensor)
『Great product. If you are looking for an inexpensive way to gather cadence and speed data during the winter months on the trainer this is the way to go. Do not expect the same speed as outdoors de to the resistance but this will still give great work data indoors and a good sensor outdoors too.』

(Attaches easily to any bicycle; NOT EVERY BIKE!!!)
『The Tech Details for the GSC-10 states "Attaches easily to any bicycle; 1-year warranty" Many retro or comfort cycle owners should verify there frame will allow alignment of the three parts to attach properly. The spoke magnet has to align with the GSC-10 sensor, not a problem.

On my Electra Townie, a comfort class bike, the pedal crank arm is located too far forward to allow alignment of the third sensor. The pedal crank arm magnet is required to align with the GSC-10 and the spoke magnet in order to measure your pedaling strokes per minute.

It is not critical for operation, but you will be unable to measure your pedaling strokes per minute. Although a general road touring cyclist, I did purchase the unit and the Edge 705 in order to measure everything I could. It was disappointing to learn AFTER the fact that I will miss a key measure.

(Works Great)
『I have had no problems with this sensor. It works perfect with my Forerunner 305. Good cadence and Speed sensor.』

(Not Waterproof)
『I'm a big fan of Garmin computers, and especially the mapping features of the 705. If there were any other computer that did what theirs does, the GSC-10's sensitivity to water would be an unacceptable design flaw. It's supplied with zip-ties (requiring a cutting tool to remove it), yet it won't tolerate even a small amount of water such as from washing one's bicycle or riding in light rain for over an hour. Garmin is honorable and will replace drowned GSC-10's under warranty. (I'm on my third one.) But it's really unacceptable to have to remove the sensor any time I wash my bike and any time rain is anticipated, and to have to do without it for a couple of weeks, or longer, any time I get rained on unexpectedly. They're replacing so many of these that, after a wet spring in the eastern USA, my last warranty replacement was backordered for five weeks.』
『The Garmin 010-10644-00 Speed/Cadence sensor (GSC 10) can monitor your pedaling cadence as you ride with this self-calibrating, wireless speed/cadence sensor. It measures and reports your pedaling strokes per minute, providing feedback for optimal performance. Use with the Edge 305 or Edge 305CAD, Included With The Edge 305CAD GPS Plus』
『A good companion for Garmin's Edge 305 and 305CAD cycle computers and the Garmin Forerunner 305 personal trainer, the GSC 10 monitors your cycling rhythm for up-to-the-minute results and later analysis. The self-calibrating, wireless unit measures both speed (in pedaling strokes per minute) and cadence , then provides feedback to the user for optimal performance. You can later feed the results to Garmin's Training Center software, which helps you tailor your workouts to meet specific goals and objectives.

Like the Garmin heart rate monitor, the GSC 10 attaches easily to your bike, where its sensors detect signals from your wheels and send the information wirelessly to your personal trainer/cycle computer. It's also backed by a one-year warranty.』

(my last garmin)
『a road was flooded out and I turn around and my garmin gps keep wanted to turn around and take a flooded road after it tried to make me make a u-turn for the 10 time I was so up set I slammed the gps in to my dash board !!! I wall never buy a garmin gps ever again !!!!! Garmen sucks !!!!!!!!!!!! Bye for ever!!!!!!』

(Beginner and vista hcx)
『--If you are new as I am to this type device, it is going to take patient practice and focused reading to get comfortable with it. After all, this device is essentially a computer calling for point by point feature mastery.
--As with any keyboard, so with the 5 buttons and rocker switch: I had to get past the frequent error of hitting zoom instead of the "menu-find" key. No problem now.
--I am happy with the precision of the device. In my experimenting, if I walked around a tree, the tracking showed the circular loop.
--In finding a spot I had marked as a waypoint or on a route's endpoint, I am very happy with the guidance and closeness of the final arrival.
--Currently it serves the simple needs I have, which maybe says I could have done with a simpler model. I use it for deep woods nature location work. It works nicely under trees. Out of curiosity, I walked right through my house with it and it kept tracking.

----The map provided lists only major highways. The county road by my house isn't there. When I went to the website, I don't recall seeing a map for the northeast US at the detail level given the rest of the US, and wondered why. I noted a review saying a map download takes 24 hours. Given my household, I'm not sure I can reserve the computer that long! I have to explore further to see if Garmin sells preloaded SD cards. I welcome comments on that. My rating is 4, not 5, based on some map disappointment. I have no knowledge of other gps's for comparison, but the device itself seems an ingenious product--again, for my needs.』

(One rugged, dependable GPS. Worked very well, though it takes time to become comfortable using this GPS to its full potential.)
『I was looking for a GPS for my trek across Ladakh (Himalayas, India). This one fit the bill well and the purpose too. Here in India, forget about downloadable maps, we do not even get printed topographic maps of that area (but for the Olizane editions). So I pre-fed the GPS with coordinates that I took from Google Earth and Wikimapia. The GPS has an altimeter which was a good thing to use in the mountains. Navigation was easy, reception is good, battery life is good (I used Duracell), body is rugged (it fell with quite some force twice on tarmac, getting only a few scratches on the screen and body), but it takes time to become comfortable using this GPS to its full potential. For the price at which it comes, I think its a good deal for someone like me (at best I go for two long treks a year). I have not been able to use it or test it for city driving - which is really difficult in this part of the world (Delhi, India). But I would highly recommend this for trekkers looking for a rugged, few frills, for the purpose GPS. Does the job very well!』

(Great but....)
『Ultimately I love this unit. The features are great and once you learn your way around the interface it is a joy to use.

The downsides; if you want separate maps it will be costly. I understand that Garmin is simply passing on the price of the mapping service it buys them from BUT they could make the unit accept third party maps, thereby driving down the price. Also GPS's at this price range usually include street maps so I would think they could have a lower price for this model since it does not include street maps out of the box.

After a year or so the glue that holds the soft rubber going around the side of the unit "disintegrated" It turns out this is a common problem with this GPS model and Garmin will fix it for you if you send the unit in. I didn't want to go without my GPS that long so I tried MANY different glues to try to reattach the rubber but nothing has worked so far.

Overall a great little navigator but probably priced too high.』

(good features, but not as one would think for the price)
『After doing quite a bit of research, I decided to buy the Garmin eTrex Vista HcX,
which basically seemed like the top of the line for a hiking/handheld GPS.

Although all the features are there, not all of them work as effectively as one would hope.
I bought also a topo map of Germany.
Negatives:
Transfer time for about 10% of the map from my computer to the GPS took over 3 hours!
So VERY slow data transfer.
Also scrolling on a highly detailed map is very slow. One has to wait several seconds (8-10), for
the new part of the map to be rendered.

Also the least important negative. This GPS is mainly for hiking, but it does have a road routing function.
Where supposedly it can give you road directions to go from some point a to b.
This function is embarrassingly bad, where I either the system cannot compute this, or gives some crazy route
which is 4-5x longer than some obvious route one would pick. I didnt actually buy the system for this routing
function, but including it with the GPS when it functions so badly, is just embarrassing.

Positives:
Otherwise the etrex Vista does what it says. Its a good detailed GPS, color screen, compass, pressure gauge, altimeter, and does have the claimed battery life.』

『Neither deep foliage nor steep canyons will faze the rugged Garmin eTrex Vista HCx navigator. Equipped with a high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver, the unit locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover. The advantage is clear: whether you're traipsing through thick woods or strolling near tall buildings and trees, you can count on the Vista HCx to help you find your way when you need it the most. The Vista HCx also includes a built-in electronic compass that provides bearing information even when you're standing still, along with a barometric altimeter that tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude. You can even use the altimeter to plot barometric pressure over time, which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions.

Adding maps to the Vista HCx is easier than ever thanks to the device's microSD card slot, which accepts cards preloaded with MapSource data for your land and sea excursions. Just insert a MapSource card with detailed street maps, and the Vista HCx will provide turn-by-turn directions to your destination. Plus, the card slot is located inside the waterproof battery compartment, so you needn't worry about it getting wet.

Besides appreciating its small size, users will also be happy with the Vista HCx's unique button layout, with five buttons located on either side of the unit. The benefits of this design are twofold: First, the Vista HCx is a breeze to operate with just one hand, and, second, with the buttons on both sides of the unit, the bulk of the front is dedicated to the 256-color, sunlight-readable TFT display. This makes it easy to distinguish map details regardless of the time of day.

The Vista HCx basemap, meanwhile, contains lakes, rivers, cities, interstates, national and state highways, railroads, and coastlines--in short, a host of helpful details for your outdoor adventures. Other details include an IPX7 waterproof housing, 1,000 waypoints with names and graphic symbols, a built-in patch antenna, a USB interface, a hunt/fish calendar, sun and moon information, and a geocaching mode. The Vista HCx, which runs for up to 25 hours on a pair of AA batteries (not included), measures 2.2 by 4.2 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

What's in the Box
eTrex Vista HCx, basemap, MapSource Trip&Waypoint Manager software, USB cable, wrist strap, quick start guide, user's manual.』

(Great!)
『I use this GPS for hunting... I expected something to guide me on the woods and mark spots and this little cheap GPS works incredible well for what I needed.
However, it is true that patient will you need when working with it. Very confusing sometimes navegating through the menus.
Other than that... great
It really does its work.
Happy with it.』

(Good GPS)
『This GPS is cheap a decent. very accurate. HOWEVER is doesn't come with links cable, that another $25.00 and god forbid you have a new computer without 9 pin serial port watch out the USB converter costs 55.00, so might as well buy upgraded version.』

(Perfect for price! Mac users will also be happy!)
『I had spent weeks researching what type of GPS I was going to get. I was new to Geocaching but wanted something that would help teach me the simplicities and ease me into it. I have been pleasantly surprised! I had read so many reviews on this GPS that I pretty much new the little tricks since the manual is totally worthless. There is a multitude of info on the web since this Garmin has been around for so long. Here are some helpful items (free or cheap) to help any Mac users out there...

-Purchase USB&PC data Cable for Garmin Etrex H GPS from KAWA on ebay. It was $[...] for shipping. Had it here in a flash and have been really happy with it. So if anyone tells you that you can't use a USB, they're full of it....
- Next go to [...] and download their manager. Neat little application.

The only thing to note is that you will need to download this: [...]
driver in order for it to work with MacCaching as they provided a different driver that didn't work. The one on apple's website does work though.

Again, I have been really happy with this little device. I like that it doesn't show you all the maps because then it makes it that much more fun and teaches you the fundamentals of navigation!』

(Simple...but, that's the point.)
『Context:

This is my first GPS. I am no luddite, I have built my own PC more than once, and am generally excited by technology -- when it works (don't get me started on the awful disappointment that is every mobile phone and mobile phone network on the planet). I am an avid mostly car camper/day hiker, though I have aspirations of weekend-long hikes (crowds do tend to chafe). In the Marine Corps, I was trained to actually use a map and compass (as in, "find the tree with an orange spot on it in the dense forests of North Carolina"). Though I'm a little rusty, I do exercise that skill once in a while, and philosophically, I prefer it. I'm a bargain-hunter. I hope to use this on hiking trails or in wilderness as a tool to keep me from becoming hopelessly lost, and I don't geocache.

The Pros:

1) Ease of Use. I've never had a GPS before, but it only took the short walk from the parking lot at Disneyland to the front gate to figure out how to mark waypoints, use GOTO and Trackback without the benefit of the manual or any quickstart guide. Button purpose was easy to intuit. Poking around randomly is an effective learning tool (the same can't be said for my mobile phone).

2) Accuracy. On said initial use, the device told me that I had returned to the front gate of Disneyland (waypoint #2), and when I had returned to my car (waypoint #1). In "Normal" mode, the "Skyview" screen normally displays an accuracy of between 14' - 20' indoors or in a car. I have yet to try to hide myself from the Sattelites in dense jungle (maybe a later review).

3) Ease of Use. Worth saying twice.

4) Durability. It appears that it will take a short drop or two, though I prefer not to test this personally, and there's no official statement of it's comparison to known standards (i.e., IEC 2060529). Garmin's website does state that the eTrex H is waterproof to IPX7 (within the aforementioned IEC 2060529), which means it is protected against temporary immersion in up to 1 meter of water.

The Cons:

1) There are no maps, though this could be said to be a "pro". I anticipate having a physical (most likely paper) map (as I usually do for use with a compass), so this isn't a big deal to me. If you expect a map you would be in for an awful surprise. Having no maps, however, isn't a torturous idea; you can successfully use waypoints, routes, and trackbacks to prevent you from getting lost, and your indicated lat/long (or grid coord.s) to let someone else know where you were if you needed to.

2) The screen is a little difficult to read without the backlight indoors or under cloudy conditions. There is a contrast adjustment, but there is apparently no adjustment for brightness. The resolution is fine (text and numbers are clear enough), but could be better given the small screen (some lines are too pixelated to be clear).

Overall, I'm very happy with it and I look forward to trying to get lost. I, unlike some others who've reviewed here, did not see the hours-long delay in acquiring an initial sattelite array; I was up and running in about ten minutes. I will not be transferring data to or from my PC, nor will I be geocaching, so the lack of a data cable or maps is in no way disappointing. I need it to work simply (which it does) and accurately (which it also does) in potentially adverse conditions (which I believe it will do).』

(so easy a caveman can use it!)
『very good product for the money.I was able to use it in just a few minutes after reading the instuctions which are not all that good.I use it for huntingand was recently in the up of michigan. It never lost its signal under some heavy canopy.』
『Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts on a budget, the Garmin eTrex H GPS navigator helps you navigate your way through the toughest terrain. The unit is equipped with a high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver, which locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. The advantage is clear: whether you're traipsing through thick woods or strolling near tall buildings and trees, you can count on the eTrex H to help you find your way when you need it the most. And just like the original eTrex, this little yellow wonder is intuitive and rugged, with a lightweight housing that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand.

The eTrex H is a breeze to use, with five buttons on either side of the navigator facilitating one-handed operation. The four-level gray LCD display, meanwhile, is easy to read in a shade or daylight. And you needn't fret should the weather turn, as the eTrex H is IPX7 waterproof, so it can withstand an accidental splash or dunk in the water and still continue to perform.

Functionally, the navigator stores up to 500 waypoints in its memory for easy retrieval, with names and graphic symbols to highlight the selections. Users will also appreciate Garmin's exclusive TrackBack feature, which lets you reverse your track (up to 20 reversible routes) and navigate back to your starting point. And the automatic track log offers 10 saved tracks (with 10,000 points), along with the ability to retrace your path in both directions. Other details include a hunting and fishing calculator, sun and moon information, and a serial PC interface.

The eTrex H, which runs for up to 17 hours on a pair of AA batteries (not included), measures 2.0 by 4.4 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

(You will like it)
『I have owned this product for approximately one year and I am very satisfied. This is actually my second one as the first one slipped off of my belt and it was run over by the golf cart behind me. This is a rugged unit and will take drops and a certain amount of abuse, but it won't handle being run over.

If you are looking for a unit that keeps track of your scores and other statistics, this is not for you. It will automatically find the course you are at and will tell you yardage to the hole. It will also measure that long drive that you hit with your driver. It is quite accurate and you will find that it is hard to play without it once you get used to it.

Golflogix does constant course updates and will notify you of this. I have never found a course that is not available on this unit. The $30.00 annual fee is also the least expensive of the various manufactures. There tech support is easy to work with as I did find an error on one course. I called them and a change was made in 48 hours.

I should mention that several of my golfing buddies after seeing my golflogix, have gone ahead and purchased one for themselves.』

(Great purchase)
『Aside from a little difficulty attaching the cable to the GPS to register the product, I have nothing but good things to say about the GolfLogix GPS. I have used it four times with no problems.』

(Fantastic Device!)
『I spent considerable time reviewing all the available GPS units out on the market. Granted, the old saying that you get what you pay for, applies here also. The devices in the $4-500 dollar range were full of extras but I was looking for something that would fit my budget and suit my needs. Without question, the Golflogix does just that. One of the big factors in my decision to buy this unit was my far sightedness. I just didn't want to wear my glasses to read the numbers that were very small on a number of the other devices. Golflogix's big number display is perfect. No glasses needed as the numbers are large enough to read without problem. I have used it on about 8 courses so far and the yardage is right on compared to the courses that have cart GPS. It's simple and gives you the yardage to the hazards and to the green without doing anything, gives me more time to try to hit the ball straight! The only complaint I have so far is the belt clip broke after just two rounds. I ordered a couple of new ones so I will see how they work. The first of batteries lasted about 3 rounds but I recently purchased re-chargables so that won't be a problem. I would recommend the Golflogix to anyone who wants a simple, easy to use GPS that has a very affordable price.』

(great product at an affordable price)
『I'm very happy so far with my new gps by Golflogixs. It's easy to use and was way more affordable than a skycaddie. Take's 2 AA batteries and you can golf several rounds before replacing them. Just keep a spare set in your bag and their easy to replace right on the course! It's not fancy like the skycaddie, but everyone I know that has the skycaddie doesn't even use all of its features because it's too complicated to learn how, especially during a round of golf when you want to keep play moving. My golflogixs is always within one to two yards of the skycaddie readings, too.』

(GolfLogix GPS)
『The Golf Logix GPS is a great product to help lower your score by giving you accurate yardage from your last drive or fairway shot. Additionally, yardage to hazards and greens even if your one fairway away like my golf partner. It is more reasonably priced through AMAZON than other GPS systems available on the market. The great part is you can download 20 courses throughout the world not just the ten from other GPS companies that charge a yearly membership of $39.95. Golf Logix only charges the low yearly membership fee of $29.95.

(Great GPS)
『Excellent GPS. This is my first GPS. It was easy to set up and is very easy to use. I use it for Geocaching. Good price and quick delivery.』

(garmin eTrex Venture)
『After researching several handheld GPS devices - we bought the Garmin eTrex Venture. We've only used it so far for geocaching and it's worked extremely well - can get us to within a few feet. It's sometimes slow to pick up the satellites when it first turns on - otherwise, no problems. You're supposed to be able to download geocache coordinates from the geocache website to Garmin GPS units - we haven't tried this yet.』

(Garmin eTrex GPS used for geocacheing)
『I finally used this for the first time to find a geocache. Turns out, I chose one of the hardest ones to find (a micro multi-cache) and didn't make it past the 1st location but at least I was able to follow it quite easily. Inside, I was concerned about the screen contrast and brightness but outside in the light, I was able to see the screen ok without it being lighted. I am a bit concerned about the battery life. Time will tell. I bought 4 NiMH rechargeable batteries to use with it. From time to time I take it out of the drawer and turn it on. It didn't seem like the batteries lasted too long before it told me battery low. I haven't used it enough to tell how long the true battery life is but I want to take it hunting to find the blind and the car. It wouldn't be to cool if the batteries gave out. You usually walk to and from the blind in the dark so the lighted display will be used a lot. Accuracy finding the first geocache was to 14'.』

(Perefect product for me)
『I used this product to mark my lanscapede mesurement and very accurant for position and the sea level mesurment perfect product for me a my partners』

(Never get lost again)
『I bought this because I had gotten lost hunting grouse on state property twice already this year. I figured, why ever get lost when I can have a gps unit for a little over $100.

Heres what I like:
it seems pretty tough, and its water proof (does not float though)
it picks up satelites quick
its icon based menus are easy to work with
it is accurate
As a hunter, it provides me with all I need
If you are savvy enough, you can get topo maps loaded for free
it is fully geocache ready (added fun)

what I dont like:
limited internal storage. 24 megs gives me just enough room for the maps of the areas I hunt in NY and western Ma.
no SD card support.(next time I will buy a unit that accepts external storage)

other than that, its good. If you are like me and on a budget, this unit will work out very well.』

『An essential for any outdoor excursion, the Garmin eTrex Venture HC helps you navigate through the toughest terrain. The unit is equipped with a high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver, which locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. The advantage is clear: whether you're traipsing through thick woods or strolling near tall buildings and trees, you can count on the Venture HC to help you find your way when you need it the most. At the same time, the Venture HC's easy-to-use menu lets you create and view waypoints (up to 500), save and view 10 track logs, access setup features, and more. It even offers 24 MB of internal memory and a detailed basemap, so you can load waypoints and routes from the included MapSource Trip&Waypoint Manager software and add map detail from Garmin's entire line of optional MapSource mapping products.

Besides appreciating its small size, outdoorsmen will also be happy with the Venture HC's unique button layout, with five buttons located on either side of the unit. The benefits of this design are twofold: First, the Venture HC is a breeze to operate with just one hand, and, second, with the buttons on both sides of the unit, the bulk of the front is dedicated to the 256-color, sunlight-readable TFT display. This makes it easy to distinguish map details regardless of the time of day.

The Venture HC's basemap, meanwhile, contains lakes, rivers, cities, interstates, national and state highways, railroads, and coastlines--in short, a host of helpful details for your outdoor adventures. Other details include an IPX7 waterproof housing, a built-in patch antenna, a USB interface, a hunt/fish calendar, sun and moon information, and a geocaching mode. The Venture HC, which runs for up to 14 hours on a pair of AA batteries (not included), measures 2.2 by 4.2 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

(Garmin 60csx)
『This GPS was a huge improvement from my old Garmin 12. It is easy to navigate around the system. I haven't used it a whole lot yet but so far I really like it. The battery life is exceptional compared to my old GPS. I don't like the fact that it seems I have to recalibrate the electronic compass every once in a while for it to give me the right direction but other than that I don't have any other complaints.』

(Great for Geocaching)
『The belt clip broke right away. Be careful with it. Garmin was generous and sent me a new one at no charge.』

(Such a neat toy!!!)
『Gave this to my hubby for his birthday. He takes it everywhere and is having a ball using it. Very trustworthy and one more reason not to stop and ask directions.』

(Usefull and powerfull)
『Very good product, usefull and powerfull. I've used on many outdor situalions and worked very well.』

(data collection)
『I like the product, but I wish that the data could be transfered to an Excel spreadsheet and also be able to print it out.』

(awesome)
『all i could have hoped for and then some. I can't believe I was running for years without this. great simple way to keep track of mileage and heart rate. the training options are simple and straight forward. with the help of the forerunner I'm hoping to run a marathon in the fall of '10. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is on the edge about getting one. the only issue i have is that I thought the satellites would sync a little faster than they do but I have nothing to compare it to... once its synced though it never loses the signal (unless i'm under a large bridge)』

(The best of the Garmins)
『This Garmin is the best of the series. The 405 is sleeker, but too sensitive to the touch. The 305, even though larger, fits very comfortably to your arm and the buttons are easy to use. It is the only one to have. I give it four stars only because I wish it had a more prominent way to display the actual time.』

(So glad I got this and not the 405)
『I labored over my decision on whether to get the current model Forerunner 405 or this. After reading all the incredibly helpful reviews on Amazon, I opted for 305. Given some of the design flaws and quirks of the 405 coupled with its price tag (more than double the 405), I decided to get 305 and I couldn't be happier. I'm training for the LA Marathon. The device is helping with my training. Particularly useful is its ability to monitor pace, which I rely to ensure that I'm tracking for my target pace. I haven't had any problems uploading my work-outs, acquiring satellite signals or the heart rate monitor.』

(Excellent training partner)
『I bought this watch to help me train for the marathon and it really helped. It is pretty accurate and will tell your distance, pace, etc. The screen is big and makes things easy to read. I was worried that the watch would be too big, since I am petite and weigh 106 lbs., but it is totally fine for me. I wear a wrist sweat band under it and it holds it nicely in place. I run without it!』

『Amazon.com Review Just when you thought Garmin had cornered the market on powerful, affordable, and effective wrist-mounted GPS devices, here comes the Forerunner 305. The release of this device is a major achievement from a design and technology perspective. This isn't just marketing-speak; the Forerunner 305 is the most accurate, most reliable wrist-mounted performance and GPS tracking tool we've ever tested. Yes, it's that good. While no device this compact can do everything (yet), the 305 pushes the boundaries of what is possible from something strapped around your wrist. The 305 model includes wireless heartrate monitoring and it can also be connected to Garmin's wireless bicycle speed and cadence sensor. If you don't need these features, consider the lower-priced Forerunner 205.

Design
The 305's design is a radical departure from Garmin's previous generation of wrist mounted GPS devices, which reached a pinnacle with the Garmin Forerunner 301. While the 301 delivered accurate heart rate monitoring, good performance tracking, and decent GPS reception, it didn't quite deliver in the design department. The form factor was bulky and wearing it wasn't much different than duct taping a full-sized GPS device to your wrist.

Not so with the 305. Garmin's engineers obviously burned the midnight oil and have come up with a waterproof design that, while certainly not as small as a sports watch, feels just as comfortable. The curved casing allows the unit's antenna to face the sky when you're running, while the widescreen display is perfectly positioned for viewing when you need it. And the display certainly deserves a few kudos. While it's smaller than the display found on previous Forerunners, its resolution is far higher, offering incredible clarity and crispness.

Garmin has smartly given the 305 a simple button layout and the buttons have a nice tactile feel with good pressure response. The right side houses the menu selection and enter buttons, while the left houses a power/backlight button and a mode button. This simple and elegant solution is a big improvement over the sometimes confusing button functionality of previous Forerunners. View button layout.

The underside of the 305 is pretty nondescript, except for a row of contacts that interface with the included charging and data cradle. The cradle is small and unobtrusive and its single mini-USB port connects to either an included AC adapter, or a USB cable that connects to your PC. In addition to data transfer with the USB cable, you can also charge the 305's embedded lithium-ion battery via a powered USB connection from your computer.

GPS Performance
The big news about the Forerunner 305 is that it features an integrated, high-sensitivity SiRFstar III GPS receiver. What does this mean? It means that the 305's ability to both track, and maintain a lock on, your position is better than anything before it. After an intial battery charge, the tester had the 305 on his wrist and was tracking speed and distance with GPS satellites within 3 minutes. The next time we used the 305, satellite acquisition was nearly instantaneous. A run through dense trees didn't faze the unit either; tracking remained true and steady. Performance on a bike was equally impressive. Whatever witchcraft has been cooked up by the designers of the SiRF technology, we like it!

The simple docking cradle makes charging and data connectivity a snap.
While the Forerunner 305 isn't billed as a GPS navigation device, it does have some rudimentary mapping, waypoint marking, and routing capabilities. In addition to marking locations along your journey, you can zoom in or out of a simple map that displays your current direction and path. There's also a "go to location" feature that routes you back to your starting location, or to any location you have defined. Once you have defined several locations, you can save this information as a route, allowing you to travel the same path in the future. As you'll see below, the 305's new "Courses" feature gives you new levels of control over how you define your favorite runs and rides.

Training Functions
The 305 is first and foremost a training tool, and its ability to organize a ton of data types into a user experience that is intuitive and simple is no small feat. Whiz-bang technology aside, if you can't use it and make it a natural part of your exercise routine, it's worthless. When it comes to these factors -- and here's the take home message on the 305 -- this device is successful where many other devices fail.

The heart and soul of the 305 can be found on the data screens, which give you real-time information about all aspects of your workout. In fact, the 305 can display a dizzying array of data, such as calories burned, distance, elevation, grade, and heading, as well as multiple lap and pace modes. The 305 adds the ability to track heartrate, lap heartrate, average heartrate, and heartrate zones via the included coded heartrate chest strap. With the purchase of a separate wireless cadence and speed meter, you can also track bike performance data.

Thankfully, the device makes it easy to define how much or how little data you want to view during a workout. You can arrange the data that's most important to you and then make that data appear front and center on the device. Indeed, within a few minutes of skimming the manual and fiddling with the device setup, you'll have your most important data displaying just the way you like it. The ability to display heartrate is a big plus, too, as it's a fairly good indicator of excercise output, fatigue, and fitness level. The 305 has all the heartrate functions you'd expect from a full-function monitor, including the ability to set target zones and alerts to maximize the effectiveness of your workouts.

Garmin's Virtual Partner function was cool feature of previous Forerunners and they've decided to keep a good thing going with the 305. If you're the type that performs best when you've got a competitor egging you on, you'll love this function, as it allows you to set up virtual running or biking companions that compete against you.

If you're looking for an complicated workout with a variety of intervals and intensity levels, or just a quick three-mile jog against your best time last week, the 305 has you covered. Navigating to the Workouts menu on the device yields three options: Quick Workouts, Interval, and Advanced Workout. A quick workout is just that; set the distance and time, distance and pace, or time and pace of your planned workout and off you go. Interval workouts are just the same, but they allow you to add repetitions and rest between them. When you really want to get fancy with your exercise, you can step up to advanced workouts, which include goals for each workout step, as well as varied distances, times, and rest periods. You can use the Garmin Training Center software to set up these workouts and then upload them to the device.

Computer Connectivity and Software
Garmin has been outfitting their devices with USB connectivity for some time now -- a welcome move for those who struggled with serial port connections in the days of yore. Thanks to USB, the 305 integrates seamlessly with the Training Center software and we quickly had workout history uploaded and stored on the computer. Not only does Training Center--which is compatible with both PC and Mac--make it easy to track your performance, you can graph data such as heartrate alongside your speed and distance. Over time, this is a great way to view your fitness levels increase, and it also helps you see what types of workouts are necessary to strengthen your weaknesses. For instance, if you see your heartrate begin to spike after a certain distance, you know you need to increase your endurance workouts to train that area of fitness.

In a first for the Forerunner series, the Training Center software also lets you define courses on your computer that you can upload to the device. When course information is combined with uploaded workout information, the Forerunner becomes a complete guide, telling you where to go, when to make a turn, and what kind of workout to do when you're on the road or path. Back on the computer, the software's ability to overlay workout data on maps of the course makes it easy to see where the course offers up the tough hills and the easy recovery spots. Plus, the ability to track historical performance on a given course is a great way to measure your improvement.

The 305 is also fully compatible with Garmin's MotionBased service, which takes your training to another level by connecting your data with the Internet. While we weren't able to use the service, the promise of sharing courses, maps, workouts, and performance data with other users is intriguing. And if you're a serious endurance athlete, you'll be glad to know that the 305 is also compatible with TrainingPeaks.com, an easy-to-use web based training system designed to help athletes train for any event.

『Amazon.com Product Description The successor to the Garmin Forerunner 301 is here, and it's better than ever. Weighing in at just over 2.5 ounces, the Garmin Forerunner 305 breaks new ground in terms of comfort, style, and performance. Totally redesigned, the 305 gives outdoor athletes and runners real-time information about speed, distance, pace, and heart rate on a device that's easy to use and amazingly compact.

The Forerunner 305 features the powerful new SiRF GPS navigation chip for supreme accuracy, even under tree cover and between tall buildings. A coded chest strap heart-rate monitor prevents unwanted interference from other devices. View larger.

The unit's GPS receiver is designed to face towards the sky when you're running.

A more watch-like design makes it far easier to use and wear.
Plus, the 305 is engineered to help folks train better and smarter. Training assistant tools, various distance and time alerts, and bundled Training Center PC software combine to make the device an essential part of any athlete's training program.

The 305's digitally coded heart-rate monitor--which is worn as a chest strap--sends heart-rate data to the device so you can see whether you're training too hard or not hard enough. Alerts for pace, distance, time, and heart rate are also available. Additionally, the unit tracks speed, distance, pace, and calories burned. Meanwhile, a course feature lets you race against previous runs in order to improve your time or just compare heart rate and pace data at every point of the way.

The 305's easy-to-read, 1.3-inch display has been integrated into a sleek and stylish form factor that is definitely a step up from the larger and more cumbersome Forerunner 301 model. Indeed, the 305 looks and wears like a stylish sports watch, and it's more carefully designed to meet the needs of athletes. The design also positions the antenna with an optimal view of the sky. As an added feature, the case is water resistant to IEC 60529 IPX7 standards (can be submerged in one meter of water for 30 minutes).

Accuracy is the name of the game with the 305. The vastly more accurate GPS antenna and receiver, which uses an advanced SiRF chip, offer much faster satellite acquisition times. Plus, the unit can hold a fix in places never before possible. Gone are the days of losing a fix under tree cover or when running between tall buildings. All of these features add up to far more accuracy in recording and tracking your exercise data. And because the 305 uses GPS to track how far and how fast you're going, you never have to calibrate it. The unit also doubles as a basic navigator. Mark your starting point as a specific location, see your current position on the plotter display, and follow an electronic breadcrumb trail back to your starting point.

The 305 features a USB data connection and docking cradle for downloading your speed, lap, exercise time, and heart-rate data into Garmin's Training Center PC software. The unit stores up to 1,000 lap histories, which you can download to your PC for a detailed post-workout analysis. Plus, you can create and schedule workouts using the included software and download them to the unit. A rechargeable internal lithium-ion battery offers up to ten hours of battery life.

For additional post-workout analysis, the 305 is compatible with MotionBased software. MotionBased adds a new dimension to training and outdoor fitness that makes the analytical aspects of a sport more compelling and a lot more fun. You can upload data to MotionBased, a Web-based application that has partnered with Garmin. MotionBased provides in-depth analysis of your workouts, as well as online mapping and route sharing that will take your training to the next level. MotionBased automatically calculates time, distance, speed, elevation, and heart rate, and it displays this information through meaningful charts, illustrations, reports, and maps. With MotionBased, you can also race multiple instances of the same route to see how you are improving or to race other members of MotionBased. You can "virtually race" someone you don't even know.

If you like the features of the Forerunner 305 but don't need heart-rate monitoring, be sure to check out the Forerunner 205.

Is using a GPS distance device allowed under USGA regulations?
The USGA and R&A both recently sanctioned the use of satellite-based yardage measuring devices during competition. Specifically, decision 14-3/0.5 allows a committee to permit the use of distance measuring devices by Local Rule. Golfers should check with their golf professional prior to use in a USGA sanctioned event. GPS devices have always been permitted in handicap scoring in recreational rounds.

    (Awesome)
『First and foremost, do not expect to be able to just put it on and it will work properly. Like anything that costs a bit more, you have to read the instructions. So if you cannot follow directions then you will have a heck of a time trying to use it. I took it on a test run just so I could get a feel for it.

The only problem I had with it was that it wasn't connecting to the satelites in order for the GPS to work. I had to go back in and re-read the instructions.

*Note- If you want to use the GPS, make sure the power save mode is off because that mode interferes with the satelites.*

Once I figured out the satelites, it took several minutes for the watch to locate them, which kind of sucks if its cold outside. You have to stand still until it picks up on the satelites.

Also, make sure the GPS is turned off while you are inside because it will try to connect to the satelites and use up your battery life.

There are so many neat features on this watch but what I thought was so cool was auto-pause setting. This feature will pause your watch if you get below a certain speed. This is good for when you are at stoplights.

I also liked how the watch is set up to transmit your watch data wirelessly. Once transmitted, you can go on garmin connect and view your results.

This is a complicated device, but once you have it all set up and figured out, it's very easy to use. I really recommend this watch to anyone who wants something that will help them with their training and to track their progress.』

    (Excellent product)
『I have used this watch for 2 weeks now, and I am almost 100 percent satisfied with it.
First of all, it is very easy to use. After 15 minutes I knew how to access most of its features.

The touch bezel works great. Even when it was raining I was able to use it with no trouble at all.

The battery life is not great, but it's ok. It takes about 3 one-hour workouts (5 days) to wear out the battery.

The GPS is not 100 percent accurate, but it is good too. Sometimes the map shows my route as if I had been taking shortcuts through the bushes. I would rate its accuracy as been 8/10. It's my first GPS device though, I don't know if they are all like that.

The heart rate monitor is excellent, much better then my Polar. It's more accurate (doesn't show absurd values like the Polar does sometimes) and it allows you to change the battery instead of having to buy a new one when the battery dies.

Another great thing about this watch is that it allows you to select the data fields that you want to view during your workout. So, you can configure up to 3 sets of data with 3 fields on each one to view during the exercise. You can either change the data sets by touching the bezel or configure the watch to rotate through them.

The data transmission to the computer is very nice, too. You only have to stick the usb receiving device into your computer and it detects the watch and retrieves the data.

So, after all that, I can say that it was a great purchase, and I recommend it for anyone who likes running and gadgets.

(This is the best of the best Gadgets)
『The Garmin 405cx is amazing. It locks Satellites and keeps tracking me almost everywhere. I run through town, and then through some woods, and my other device, would pick up here, and there, and never hardly track in the woods. I can even see my movements as I get ready, in the house. The Upload is quite easy, and the web app is really cool.』

    (Good workout partner)
『I am very happy with this GPS but it does have some quirks.

I have an Edge 305 on my bicycle so maybe the learning curve was easier for me, but I found the 405CX pretty easy to use. It does take some getting used to but by the 3rd use I had no issues with it. I had my screens set up and was using the simple workouts with ease.

The screen is a bit small, but once you get used to the set up it becomes easier to read on the run. If you don't use auto scroll you can quickly look at your watch and get the info you want. At the start of the run I pick the screen that is best for what I am doing and just leave it there mostly unless I get bored and start to cycle through my screens.

The touch bezel works ok. Using it to set up a workout is easy once you get used to it. During a run a touch scrolls the screen and a touch and drag increases or decreases the speed of the virtual partner. Sometimes it takes a second or two to register and sometimes a slight touch registers. It's usually not an issue, but sometimes my jacket will make it scroll when I don't want it to. When I do want to scroll it during a run I sometimes have to press a second time to get it to scroll. It's not really an issue for me and you learn the ins and outs of it.

GPS reception has been very good for me, even under clothing. It takes about 10-20 seconds to find the satellites each time I run, so I stretch while it's searching. I have noticed that even after it has found the satellites it still needs time to stabilize. For instance on one track run I started running right after it found the satellites in a place with a lot of trees. After the run I looked at my route and the first part of the lap under the tress it showed me about 50' off the track, but on each subsequent lap it showed me right on the track even while under the trees. It just needed time to stabilize. Now I turn on the watch and give it a few minutes while I stretch/warm up, then when I am ready to run it's right on the money.

Like the 305 Edge the elevation feature is practically worthless. The barometric pressure just fluctuates too much so the watch is always all over the place. Again it does seem to stabilize the longer it is on, but it's never exact enough to rely on. If you look at the elevation chart in the software after a run you can see where the hills are, but if you are doing laps a hill's elevation can change by as my as 75' each time you come across it each time. I don't use the watch itself to tell me the elevation when running since it is so off.

Looking at the pace chart in the software after a run is interesting. Like elevation, it's all over the place, spikes everywhere. Even though it looks a mess it is useable, where you had to stop for traffic or where your interval sprints will be clear in the chart. While running the pace on the watch does seem very accurate. You can quickly see how fast you are going and if you accelerate it shows instantly on the watch. It is probably one of the most useful display items.

The heart rate monitor has been perfect, no issues at all. I do use Buh-Bump, Heart Rate Monitor Electrode Cream with it which may help.

I have to charge the battery once a week (I run 3 days a week). A 30-40 minute run uses about 10% of the battery. Sitting in powersave mode for a day or two is a greater drain on it.

I do love this GPS besides the quirks. It's great to quickly and easily set up an interval workout and not have to be on a track or constantly looking at my watch (it makes a very loud beep at the start of each interval which I can hear even on a windy day). It's a great training aid that makes a run more interesting and fun.

The software does leave a lot to be desired (Windows Vista 64). The watch links fine, I have never had any issues there, plug in the ANT antenna and it does everything itself. But the Garmin Connect website while nice doesn't break down everything enough and can be a bit slow. The Garmin Training Center software displays more information but is clunky and not very polished.

I highly recommend this GPS watch. It has helped me tremendously on my workouts and makes my runs more fun. While it could be better, and cheaper, I don't regret buying it. I do wish Garmin would improve the software though. For this price they really could do better. I wouldn't let that stop me and there is other software you can buy that works with the watch.』

(Best Golf all around GPS unit!)
『I've owned the GolfBuddy Tour, Calloway uPro and now this one, G5 Approach.

GolfBuddy Tour is great that it's loaded with courses (20,000+), battery lasts a long time. But, no flyover type view. Just pin location.

Calloway uPro is great with flyovers...just it's going to cost you to buy those. Cons that I could not get over: battery only really lasts for one round (even at low backscreen settings). If you ever play two rounds in one day it won't last through the entire second round. And if you ever forget to charge it...well, you're out of luck. Another con is that you have to pick and pick and pick to add courses...and that is EXTREMELY cumbersome. You have to click on EACH course on their website to add it...plus, to connect to uPro site you can only have 50 courses or less loaded on it. Anything more on your uPro and you have to delete to get under 50 before you can sync with their website. Why is 50 not enough? Well, I travel quite a bit and I play a lot of different courses...plus, there are well over 100 courses around me, so, it was a pain for me to load and reload and change and reload...etc.

G5 approach - best overall. Has all of the courses. Has overview with hazards in view. drag and drop for where you want to go. 2 AA batteries last about three rounds. I use eneloop batteries so they keep their charge when not in use. I also keep a set of AA's in my bag just in case. So, AA batteries actually are easier cause you don't have to worry about plugging it into something mid-round to charge it up. Easy to use, accurate (made by GARMIN). I've never had a problem seeing the screen out on the course? So, i'm not sure what people are complaining about low light, etc...My buds have golf GPS' as well and we always just end up using my G5...most simple, quickest, has a great view of entire hole, can pin point where you want to get yardage, battery lasts, has every course. No more annual fees, easy. I would recommend this unit to ANYBODY.

Hit em long, hit em straight!!!』

    (Golf made easier)
『This unit is so easy to use. Really didn't need the instructions. One button to turn it on and a touch on the screen does the rest. I also like the fact that you are not required to pay an anual fee. GO GARMIN YOU ROCK !!! Takes the distance guessing out of the game. Only one draw back for now, is the limited amount of courses available
    for my area.

    (Phil)
『Awesome quality, functionality and ease of use. Does put a little stress on batteries.』

    (Garmin Approach G5)
『This device is an excellent tool for all golfers. It is very easy to use and is very accurate. It possesses all of the features that other manufacturers possess and has a few that others do not. I wish it had a built in rechargeable battery versus having to purchase batteries and/or having to recharge batteries in a recharger. But, I have been getting 4 1/2 rounds out of the AA lithium batteries. I hope future enhancements can be upgradeable to my unit that includes a saving function for shot mades for future round comparisons. All in all the G5 works very well and I would highly recomment it to golfers of any handicap.』

(Garmin G5 vs Callaway uPro vs SkyCaddie SG3)
『I've owned a SkyCaddie SG3 for some time and, weary of its annual fees, glacial operating speed, and pedestrian display, I decided to go color. I purchased the Garmin Approach G5, but its display is very difficult to see in normal outdoor conditions. So I also purchased the Callaway uPro. I played an entire round on my home course, with all three GPS units mounted on the cart. My findings:

Build quality: All three units are rugged, with great fit-and-finish. The Garmin gets the nod, because it's waterproof. The Callaway is water-resistant, and you can purchase a watertight skin for an outrageous $24.99 to protect it further. The SkyCaddie is not recommended for use in the rain.

Size: The Callaway uPro is the smallest and thinnest, about the size of an LG Chocolate phone. The SG3 is similar height and width to the uPro, but much thicker and heavier. The biggest of all is the Garmin, the size of an iPhone and four times as thick. It's wide, heavy, and not good for the pocket.

Accuracy: The three units properly mapped my home course, agreeing on nearly all distances (within 6 yards of each other) and hazards.

GPS acquisition: The old-technology SG3 takes forever to acquire GPS, sometimes more than five minutes. Both the Garmin and the uPro acquire satellites almost instantly. The uPro has technology that, once it locks onto satellites, it really keeps them. After locking on, I took the unit indoors, and even put it in my pants pocket. It never had to re-acquire. Advantage: uPro.

Getting courses: The Garmin wins handily. All 10,000+ available courses come preloaded in its 1GB memory. No annual fees, no paid memberships. The Garmin Approach G5 offered every course I cared to search. Of course, your mileage may vary.

To make the most of your SkyCaddie, you need to pay for an annual membership on their website, and download courses individually. Some SkyCaddie memberships allow you to download as many courses as you want from all over the world...however, the unit's paltry memory will only hold a few at a time. The uPro also requires that you sign up on their website (no annual memberships, though). With the uPro, Basic Mode (an alphanumeric color screen that resembles that of a SkyCaddie) is free for unlimited courses. For Pro Mode (the nifty aerial photography view of each course) you pay for only the courses you wish to play, a la carte. Your first Pro Mode course is free.

Information: All units show distances to the front/middle/back of greens. The SG3 also shows hazards on the same screen, but it doesn't give you hazard carry distances, like the uPro does. The Garmin shows the entire hole, including hazards. But showing the entire hole means that the illustrations of hazards are tiny, as is the accompanying yardage text. Coupled with the Garmin's dim display, it's pretty useless. Curiously, the Garmin apparently doesn't consider trees to be obstacles, so they're not represented at all on the graphical display. The uPro (in Pro Mode) shows every tree and hazard - in fact, the entire hole, as photographed from satellite. It's like viewing my actual course (including my house!) from above. There's absolutely nothing like it.

On the home screen, both the SG3 and the uPro also give you the time of day, battery strength, and GPS signal strength. The Garmin gives you none of the above. You need to briefly press the power button to see the time. It also shows a battery icon, but that never moved during my round.

Battery: The Garmin and SG3 both take AA batteries, whether alkaline, NiMh rechargeable, or lithium ion. With any AA type, both units easily complete at least two rounds. The uPro uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Unlike SkyCaddie models that use internal lithium ion batteries, which are a real horror show to replace (SkyCaddie recommends you send the unit back), the Callaway uPro battery easily drops in. Callaway says it takes three hours to charge, but it didn't take me anywhere near that long. UPro battery life is 6-12 hours, depending on how bright you set the display's backlight. With my display settings (see Display, below), I easily completed a round with plenty to spare. As far as battery preferences go: For some, constantly recharging and changing out AAs is a grind. For others, recharging (and eventually, re-purchasing) internal lithium-ion batteries ($27 for the uPro) is just as bad, especially considering that the battery can leave you high and dry mid-round if you forget to charge it the night before. To each his own.

Display: The SG3 is monochrome, so it doesn't stand a chance. Its display is dim and boring, but it does give you a button on the side for a backlight. The screen sizes on the SG3 and uPro are nearly identical. The Garmin's touchscreen display is nearly iPhone-big, and drop-dead gorgeous...when you're at home. Take it outside, and it washes out to the point of uselessness. Worse yet, to save power, the display times out a few seconds after you touch it, making it even dimmer. You touch the screen to wake it up, but when you touch the screen, the unit thinks you want to measure a distance, so the measurement feature pops up. You need to hit the "Done" button to exit that. There's no way to increase the screen timeout or disable the screen dimming feature. Also, since the Garmin is a touchscreen, it's a massive fingerprint magnet, so it only looks pretty for the first hole. The uPro wins the display contest handily, with a bright and functional screen. You can play two ways: graphically (Pro Mode), showing the course via aerial photography, or with big, bright alphanumeric text (Basic Mode). Since golf courses have very low contrast (lots of green color and not much else), I defaulted to the Basic Mode for easy readability. For the aerial view, you can always hit the Pro Mode button on the side of the unit, as it's much more useful around the green. The uPro's default setting is to power-save the display after (I think) 45 seconds. Unlike the Garmin, which dims its display, the uPro goes blank until you hit a button, which is an enormous buzzkill. Fortunately, you can get around this. You can change to a longer timeout, or disable standby altogether. As the uPro has a very bright display, what I did was take the backlight down to 25% (from a default 70%), and disabled standby completely. I easily completed a round with plenty of battery life to spare this way. The uPro and the Garmin use a reflective LCD technology that actually makes the display brighter in direct sunlight. The uPro's version of this technology worked far better than the Garmin's. The only time the Garmin display looked remotely readable was when you aimed it directly at the sun.

Just for fun, I took along my iPod Touch 2G, to compare all the displays outdoors. I figured that the iPod's conventional LCD wouldn't compete with the reflective technology of the Garmin and the uPro. Wrong. The iPod destroyed both of them. It wasn't even close. So, if you have an iPhone (the iPod Touch won't do GPS), you may want to look into the golf GPS apps at the App Store. If you do decide to use an iPhone, just remember, it won't stand up to being dropped, kicked, and tossed around like these three ruggedized units, and it for sure ain't the least bit water-resistant.

Hole-to-Hole: The simpler SkyCaddie wins here. It automatically advances to the next hole. If there's any confusion (you're playing past the current hole, for example), it'll ask you if you want to move to the next hole. If you're starting on Number 10, for example, the SkyCaddie makes that selection easier as well, with a grid from which you can select holes via cursor. The Callaway Auto Hole Advance is kind of a drag. If you're anywhere near the green, Auto-Advance jumps to the next hole. You can't measure your 40-yard pitch to the current green. And when they say Auto, they mean Auto. In Auto-Advance mode, there's no way to back up to the current hole, or any previous hole, for that matter. The only way out is to go to either Manual Advance, or Manual Advance With Prompt (it asks you to press the center button to advance). Hitting a button on each hole is tedious. The Garmin Auto-Advances sequentially, but if you jump around (skipping a couple of holes to get around slow play), you need to touch the screen arrows for each hole advance.

Settings: The Garmin gives you almost nothing to customize, as it is both very intelligently designed and extremely automated. It would have been nice to be able to crank the screen brightness, or at least extend the timeout. Both the SG3 and the uPro give you a host of settings to mess with, including screen brightness (contrast only with the SG3), hole advance preferences, and much more.

Cost of ownership: The Garmin and uPro are color, so they're not cheap. If you want to compare apples to apples, you could go to the color SkyCaddie SG5, but be advised that the SG3, SG4, and SG5 are virtually identical in functionality, screen size - basically, EVERYTHING - so you're paying almost $150 more for color alone, which is the cost of a whole 20-inch color TV. (My SG3 is discontinued, so now I'm quoting price from the replacement SG4.) Couple that with the amazing wow factor of both the Garmin and the uPro, and the top-of-the-line color SkyCaddie SG5 is a terrible deal. To the SkyCaddie's cost of ownership, add their totally outrageous annual membership fees. SkyCaddie also charges ridiculous sums of money for stuff like plastic cart mounts and batteries. The Garmin wins here, hands-down, with all available courses preloaded into memory. No fees whatsoever! For accessories, RAM Mounts makes a rock-solid, relatively reasonably-priced cart mount for the Garmin. The uPro, while not requiring you to pay for a membership, makes you download each course. They're all free, if you want to use only Basic Mode. But if you want what makes the unit famous and awesome, which is Pro Mode video previews and flyovers of each hole, you need to pay. If you go for a 20-course package, for example, that's $60. It's still cheaper for most people than SkyCaddie, because there's no annual fee. And the more courses you buy, the cheaper it gets per course. However, uPro accessories such as cart mounts are rarely discounted, and you'll pay more for their little plastic add-ons than you would pay for a complete multi-handset cordless phone system or a new DVD player.

Extras: Each unit has (or will soon have, in the uPro's case) the ability to track scores and aggregate player information. I don't use any of that stuff. No amount of button-pushing or touch-screening could beat the ease and speed of marking stuff down with a pencil.

Wow Factor: The SkyCaddie is deadly dull, with zero Wow Factor, but highly functional. One would think the Garmin, with its big, beautiful touchscreen, would win. However, the screen is just too dim to view the image-based interface in normal outdoor lighting. The Callaway uPro, with its unique video flyovers of every hole, is the winner. While the flyovers may not be great outdoors (golf courses are green-on-green-on-green, so there's little contrast), they're great for previewing new courses in your home before you travel. Beyond that, the uPro comes with several preloaded video tutorials to help you get the most from the unit, and an earbud is in the box, so you can listen to the video narration. Voice Recognition, to allow you to change settings, holes, etc. by voice command, is built into the Callaway uPro, and they say it'll be activated by late 2009.

Summary: Not one of these units is perfect, but the Callaway uPro is the runaway winner. It's simple to use, highly customizable, deadly accurate, super-fast, and gorgeous to view. 2nd place goes to the SkyCaddie, even with its monochrome screen, pokey operation, and 20th Century technology. The Garmin comes in last, even though it's the most sophisticated, intelligent, beautiful, automated piece, made by people who really know GPS. The thing is just too dim to use outdoors.

    (Not bad)
『I bought this model after owning the 205 and 255 Garmin GPS units which I was very satisfied with. So I moved up to this one because of the wider screen and it came highly recommended from a family member. Quite honestly I was disappointed in the battery life and the voice recognition thing. The original battery I have already replaced and the new one, too, will not hold a charge over more than a couple of days even when unplugged and turned completely off in the console. I never had that problem with the other models. The voice recognition thing works sometimes but it hates my southern drawl and I hate screaming at it while I'm driving so I just use it manually. I've had this unit about 2 months and a couple of times it has just frozen up on me and I had to turn it off and remove the battery to reboot the system. Like the other smaller units it will get you to the right street every time, but don't count on the location flag being exact. Another disappointment was the multi-lane mode. When I saw it advertised the screen was in the multi-lane mode at an intersection, so I naturally thought the screen was always in that mode. In that mode you actually see the lanes and traffic signs, not just the triangle moving along a map. On my first trip I discovered that it rarely goes into the multi-lane mode and only when there is more than one lane exiting the same direction. What a bummer! Ending on a positive note, because of the larger screen I can read it easily.』

Easy to Use Right Out of the Box

Garmin's own navigation is easy to use
One of Garmin's key product philosophies is, "to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box," and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin's portable navigation devices.

Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

    New-- Voice Recognition

Usable voice recognition is something we've been waiting to see for a  long time. Reaching over to type out directions on your GPS isn't just difficult, it can feel downright dangerous. There's even a warning on every GPSnotto do it. But who has the time to sit still and punch in a destination? Well, now you can have your hurry and your directions too.

The nüvi 800s aren't the first GPS navigators to offer voice recognition, but the level of flexibility they offer sets a new standard for simple and intuitive use.

The device comes with a little remote control that mounts on your steering wheel. It has two buttons. One is, "listen." The other is, "stop listening". Hit the "listen" button to start voice recognition. Then you can speak any of the words that appear on the display, and the device will understand, or you can ask questions based on most points of interest. Say,"find nearest Italian restaurant,"for example, and you’ll get a list of nearby spots. Say"go to"and name of the one you want, and you get turn-by-turn directions to dinner. The nüvi also knows the names of many large business brands, so you can just say,"find place, Starbucks,"if that's your coffee mojo.

Of course, if you know the address you want to go to, you can say that too, and the nüvi will give you directions, all without having to reach over to the dashboard and touch it.

Speech recognition is available for American English, British English, European French, European Spanish, German, Italian, and Netherlands Dutch languages.

Traffic-Capable for Either FM Traffic or Enhanced MSN Direct Content (optional receiver required)

MSN Direct Enhanced Traffic and Content

traffic reportsWith an optional receiver, you can access enhanced dynamic content from the MSN Direct service. Check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and wirelessly send custom to your nüvi.

Check out a full description of MSN Direct content features, or a coverage map for MSN Direct services.

A 3-month subscription to MSN Direct is included with the receiver. After that, subscription fees are $49.95 per year, or $129.95 for a lifetime subscription.

    FM Traffic
    TMC traffic service coverage map
With an optional receiver, you can get alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous— there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

A 3-month subscription to TMC Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network is included with the receiver. For more information on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the Garmin website.

Widescreen -- See More of What's Around

The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.
Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen

    3-inch screen

    and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen

    Multi-Destination Routing

This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you  save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about).

A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

    Where Am I?

Garmin's "Where Am I?" feature is a useful safety feature on all nüvis, but voice recognition makes it even better.

On any nüvi (including this one), you can just tap "Where Am I?" to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address and intersection. Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. With the 800s, all you have to do is say "Where am I?" to get the info.

    Where's My Car?

Like the nüvi 700s, the 800s will also remember where you parked. It automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with nüvi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. Perfect for unfamiliar spots and crowded lots such as amusement parks, stadiums and malls.
