After attending some music/movement classes and using some egg rhythm shakers there and having fun with them I decided to get some for at home. They're a fun easy way to keep a beat and get a little exercise while doing so, my daughter likes that she can run around and shake them as opposed to having to sit still to play a different type of rhythm instrument that would require more concentration.
They are well-made and sturdy, although as always with children I would suggest supervision, I imagine these little things would definitely break if a child were to walk or stand on it.
For an adult's hand I find them to be rather small, if you wrap your whole hand around it the sound is muffled a bit. The only other option is to hold it between your finger-tips which can be a bit awkward.』

He loves music and we thought this would be perfect. The harmonica is great and he learned to play that quickly. The kazoo he hasn't really taken to yet (almost a year later) but it works fine (although I would have liked it to be finished wood instead of raw since it does get wet being played). The shaker and the castanets are fine - nothing special but work ok. Unfortunately the xylophone is miserable!! I had hoped for a nice xylophone to be able to play simple tunes and scales with him. I don't mind the wood (many high quality professional xylophones are wood) and would even be ok with a "muted" sound as some reviewers described this. But I really hoped for a MUSICAL sound to the xylophone and well this is just a wooden stick hitting wooden slates - I could have made that myself. Looking at the slates they don't appear to be made with any quality control and there is no way to even play a simple scale with this. Unfortunately they are not musical. I had hoped for better from Melissa&Doug but was sorely disappointed with the xylophone.』
