(Absolutely phenomenal lense!)
『This lense is the best of the best. Yes, it is a slow focuser, but once you lock the focus in.... WOW! The color saturation is amazing. The bokeh is undescribable. Do not rent or borrow it unless you have the money to buy it. You will fall in love.』

(The best portrait lens I've used)
『This is a specialized lens, but one I absolutely would not be without. I use the 16-35mm and 24-70mm zooms for general shooting, but the 85 1.2 is what's on the camera most of the time. I moved to Canon for digital photography after years as a Leica shooter with the 50mm F1.0 and the 75mm f1.4 as my favorite lenses. This lens is in a league with those amazing lenses. It's very very sharp, but at f1.2 has maybe a quarter of an inch depth of field with a beautiful bokeh in the out of focus areas.

For those that complain about the shallow depth of field. THAT'S THE POINT. That's why you buy this lens. Yes you can use it stopped down and it's a very nice 85mm at f2 and above, but in a modestly lit room with a 5D MkII I've taken some of the best portraits I've done in 40 years at f1.2 or f1.4. I love this lens and wouldn't be without it in my kit.』

(Problems with Focusing?)
『So I DON'T own this lens. I base my right to comment on the photographs people have submitted to amazon. This is what I see.

The images on this page, taken with the 85 f 1.2, are mostly out of focus. A notable few are in focus -- the exceptional sepia toned sad,in-your-face-girl in the beginning, the woman a few images later with steady eyes emerging from a progressive front&rear blur of hair, the grapes on the wedding cake. Mostly though the focus is off: all of the sports shots, most of the landscapes, even many of the portraits.

So does the acknowledged criticism of the 85 f1.2 being a slow focusing lens include it being an inaccurately focusing lens?

For comparison look at the images for the 135 mm f2 L.Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens for Canon SLR Cameras Not all of them are in focus, but the majority are and so very sharp. Look at the yellow and orange wildflowers currently image 11 (with great bokkeh), the cheetah cub, the gecko, the bee currently image 34, the dragon fly image 65 -- and many more.

I really hanker for this mutha of a lens though. Jesse Hunter's review is so cogent and convincing for purchase (put that credit card down). He also comments on the 135 mm and says that the two lens serve different purposes. In addition, when the focus is on with the 85 -- especially when it make the eyes pop -- the result IS magnificent.

Maybe I'll buy the 85 f1.2 someday, but certainly I will rent it first.』

(Brilliant albeit slow)
『If you are looking for a lens that yields excellent portrait pictures, this lens will probably give you the best result you could expect.
I also used it with a X2 converter to be able to photograph flowers and other small objects at a short distance. Picture quality is really excellent. Althpough, I must say, I did not use it with a full frame camera, so I cannot really tell much about vignetting.
The blurry background is very pleasant and gives very nice emphasis on the person or object you are photographing.
This is definitely not the right lens for sports and photographing birds and fast moving objects. The autofocus is not particularly fast. However, it is quite accurate, I must say, and very quiet.
Bear in mind that pictures taken with this lens at f/8 aperture are still better quality than pictures taken with other lenses that are typically f/3,5 or f/5,6 set at f/8. This means the lens components are of superior quality. In quality, I mean sharpness, contrast and color rendering. Also, in all the pictures I have taken in different situations, I have not noticed any chromatic aberration.
I have used this lens with: EOS 1D, EOS 50D and EOS 1D Mark III. Great results, even with the 4Mpix of the 1D.
So, the conclusion is:
Pros: Excellent quality pictures. Sharp, well contrasted, accurately focused, well colored.
Cons: Heavy, slow autofocusing.
I do not consider the high price as a con, because you don't get this quality for cheap.』

(Great lens until it stopped working)
『I bought this lens to use for fast action/sport photography in low light conditions (inside gyms). Worked really well although being only 50mm, you really had to use your feet to frame the pictures. I was able to get some great shots in even the darkest of gyms. I started experimenting with it for everyday use, and found that I really loved the results. As most other reviewers have said, it is pretty soft at 1.4, but once you stop it down a bit, the pics come out super sharp.

Now for the bad news. I use it on a D90, and unfortunately after a month and a half, the lens simply stopped working. I got an error message of "fEE" and the lens was completely unusable in auto or manual modes. I called Nikon warrenty service, and they said "oh, you'll have to send the lens in to get it repaired". Well, I packed it up and sent it off (cost of 12 bucks to me for shipping and insurance)and am now waiting for it to be returned. In the mean time, I'm without my new "go-to" lens for who knows how long. This lens is made in China. I'm not sure if Nikon has another manufacturing plant which may produce higher quality lenses, but I'm pretty disappointed with this copy.

One more complaint...the rear lens cap is a cheap plastic type that simply slides over the mount. Can't believe that you can spend this much for a lens and not get something of a better quality.』

(Replacement for Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 Manual)
『I bought this lens on a recommendation as a replacement for a used NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4 (Product Number 1433) that I had been borrowing for 3 years. This is a moderately expensive lens for my budget and after using this I am very satisfied with the purchase. I used it in auto mode for outdoors photography (buildings and rolling stock) and found it satisfactory. I then took it indoors for low light photography (concert, music performance) and the results are smashing. With the older lens I couldn't use the viewfinder for focusing (very shallow depth of field and very poor eyesight) so I relied on the ring settings, with enough practice I got good at that method. This lens, on my Nikon D80 body Nikon D80 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body only), affords me more of an opportunity to focus through the viewfinder which I am thrilled with. I will need to learn all over again the focus using the ring but I am certain to master this. In certain indoors situations I was able to use the auto focus in P mode without triggering the focus assist light - sweet.

Perhaps my issues with the old NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4 just meant I should have had it serviced.』

(Excellent all-purpose lens)
『I got this 50mm 1.4 lens to take low light pictures of our upcoming baby on my D90. I needed a fast lens to keep flash from going off my newborn's face. Test shots with this lens are amazing. Opened up to 1.4 you can nearly take pictures in the dark. The shallow depth of field you get at 1.4 allows you easily select a focus point and blur out the background and foreground.

I could have purchased the cheaper 50mm 1.8 but I wanted the extra stop and since it's a full frame lens it will work when I upgrade to an FX camera bodies. Get the best glass you can afford don't abuse it and you will save money in the long run.

『When I purchased this lens I was looking for a low light lens with the solid construction and exceptional performance I enjoyed with the 50mm F/1.8 lens I used 20 years ago with my Nikon F series. What I got instead was a mediocre made in China lens that hunts and is noisy when focusing. Very disappointed.

I already have a the 18-200mm AF VRII lens from Nikon which is an exceptional lens.

I was looking to use the 50mm in lower light situations but the lens is not worth the $350 so I'll be returning this one to Amazon.』

『I have a Nikon d3000 (Nikons new entry level dslr not the d300) and really want this lens. I have shot with the 50 mm f1.4 lens before and it autofocuses just fine, but I was wondering if this lens would autofocus on my camera. If I have to manually focus it is not a big dealI just want to know before I buy it if this lens would autofocus. Anyone who caould answer my question that would be really helful.』

The problem is that it won't auto focus on the D40. I know I know, I should have researched it more and learned about it, but really? Come on, who makes a camera this day and age that can't auto focus with certain lenses. Whatever, I'm returning it and getting the 35mm 1.8. I played it with it a bit and it had some really nice results. Amazon also got it to be super quick, overnight actually.』

(Outstanding Speakers)
『These speakers are absolutely wonderful. I have them hooked up to a Yamaha HTR-5940 receiver. I am using them as the front channel speakers, along with an S-2 as a center (got a good deal from a friend), and B-2s as surrounds, along with a Sub-12.

Sound Quality:
The F-1s shine no matter what I am using them for. They are superb for stereo listening, and they handle the front effects channels for 5.1 very well too. They handle all types of music very well.

Appearance/Size
These speakers are slim. They are of the perfect height that the drivers are at ear level when sitting on a couch. The grills look nice, but I prefer to keep them off because I think the speakers look much cooler without them. I went to a retailer and was looking at the synergy speakers and the F-2s and F-3s are so big and heavy that they'd be kind of a pain for me, but the F-1s are easy enough to move around if you're just trying to clean behind them.

Connections:
The F-1 is ready for bi-wiring, but I tried it and didn't notice any difference so I went back to single wiring for simplicity's sake. The binding post type connectors are great because they accept thick speaker wire without any issues, or you can use banana plugs.

Note: The finish is not exactly "easily" damaged, but it can't take too much of a beating either, so be delicate with these speakers (of course, you would be delicate with any audio equipment anyway, right?).

Overall, these are great speakers. Well worth the price.』

(Hearing is Believing)
『If you choose a smaller room for your home theater like I have these towers will impress you every time. I have these plus the matching center, surrounds and sub mated to a THX rated Yamaha receiver. I usually get one of two reactions from people after hearing my system; "I need to re-calibrate my system" or "I need to upgrade". And that is coming from HT buffs that have spent much more than I. The bottom line is amazing performance for the money. I would imagine to get the same performance in medium to large rooms the F-2 or F-3 may be needed.』

『I bought this TV because it was on sale and there are some pluses and minuses. It is a 22 inch flatscreen TV for less than $300, so that is awesome however the picture is really not that great. I have tried changing the color settings many many times and still it doesn't quite look right. The HD channels that I get look pretty good but not the best I have seen.

『I have a Canon Digital Rebel XTI, which is far more superior to any nikon on the market. Purchasing the Exilim, I wasn't looking for a camera to take photos with since nothing can beat the Canon Digital Rebel XTI already in my posession. I purchases the Exilim for it's ability to record high speed movies for slow motion playback. Thus far I'm impressed. It is astonishing to watch simple, every day things in slow motion.

I do have an old nikon camera that is completely useless due to the fact it is a nikon. I should record myself smashing it with a hammer in high speed, so that I may post it online to show what it looks like when a substandard camera is broken in slow motion. Every detail of the epic wonder will be captured in stunning detail. I can then record HD video of my personal feelings on the matter afterward. I will have no remorse, I promise.

With all of that said, the photo quality is pretty good, and the camera takes fast pictures. No lag time recording to the flash card at all. It's also amazing to take 60 photos in 1 second. Astonishing. The abilities of this camera far outweigh those of ANY nikon on the market. It's absolutely astonishing.

If I had the choice between a nikon with $10 Million and a Casio, I would choose the nikon, purchase another Casio, and record myself smashing nikon cameras all day, every day, for a month solid with the higher quality Casio.』

『I find this camera to be extremely good for a consumer type camera. If you don't need super high resolution, this camera is very adequate. The 12X optical zoom and large lens just blow away most digital cameras. The slow motion (high speed) video is very good at 300fps. At the higher speeds (600 and 1200fps), it does take a lot of light to get good results and the resolution is OK, but not great. However, I have found that most outdoor sporting / action type activities are very well suited to 300fps slow motion video.』

『It comes with a 150 page manual. In readable (mostly) English. A zillion options. One very nice feature, you can program it to remember most settings. If you want the flash to stay off (which I need most of the time) you can set it to do that, even if you turn it off and on. It seems to have good sensitivity, the image stabilizer works quite well.

As a still camera, about average. As a video camera, a lot for the money. It shoots normal video, HD (1080p, 60 Hz) and fast video, up to 1200 fps. Low resolution above 300 fps, good for things that go bump, not for fancy presentations. The 30-300 fps adjustable setting is not so convenient, you have to set the frame rate each time you shoot. It should be programmable. The 300 fps fixed setting has a resolution of about 512x390, good enough for most sports work.

A comment on pixels. The Ex-F1 has a 6 Mp sensor. You can get a lot more than that for less money, but it's more marketing than real. You have to look at the sensor (CCD/CMOS) size. Real world lenses are limited to about 100 line pairs per mm in what they can resolve. Based on the specs for the Ex, it tries to get 200 lp/mm. So, not real. My little Olympus P&S is over 400 lp/mm. You just can't get there. Fewer pixels for a given chip size usually means better light sensitivy. That helps more than anything else.

For my use, mostly in sports, a very good compromise. The CS prerecord mode is very good. You can get 60 full resolution frames before you press the shutter. It stores them in internal memory and saves after you press the shutter. So you can see what happened just before (up to 60 fps, programmable) With a 16Gbyte SD card, about $25, you can save over 4500 full resolution pictures.』

『Five stars does not do this lense justice. I recently read all the reviews available on this and other sites they all proclaimed this lense as a fantastic buy, its better than that. This lense is a steal at the price, equivilent quality costs over $1000 usually, for portraits its the only lense to have at the price, if there is something better on the market in the price range I havn't seen it. The sharpness and clairity even in near darkness was way better than I was expecting and in comparison to my L lenses this is on a par. This is such a good deal I may get another just in case I lose the first one. If you buy no other lense, get this one.』

『This lens not being an "L" series lens doesn't get the attention it deserves and is an excellent value for the price. I've had it for over a year now with regular use and not had any problems.

Using the EF 85 f/1.8 on a full frame camera, like 5D and 5DMkII, for portraits or photos of children, you get excellent results using ambient light. It is exceptionally sharp and comes very close to the 85 f/1.2L lens in image quality from f/1.8 and above, but is lighter and at less than 1/4th the price. If you can't decide between this and the 85 f/1.2, then get this lens first as it will quench your thirst and then see if you can utilize your skills for a very thin DoF from f/1.2-f/1.8.

The auto-focus is one the fastest in the Canon EF lens lineup and is quiet for not being an L. The manual-focus ring is also quite smooth. It is well built and is very easy to travel with on any camera body. I would rank its performance over the Nikkor 85 f/1.4 in terms of auto-focus speed. Since this lens isn't an "L", it doesn't come with a lens hood or case, but is made in Japan.

Some people have complained about the chromatic aberration (purple fringing), but in-camera or auto correction in Photoshop, Lightroom or Aperture can easily fix this. Even without it, its really not severe. Don't pass up on this lens if you're looking for top notch primes!』

『I hate to rain on the parade of so many purchasers, but this lens is good, but not great. The build quality is awful and by that I mean... you can expect to buy multiple copies of this lens if you are not careful.

This is probably the best value lens in Canons lineup, but it is by no means a 4.5/ 5 lens, in my opinion. If you want to give Canon credit for building a nice lens for about 100 bucks, then fine, but this doesn't rank up there among the prime (L) lenses.

Good but not great. Personally, id buy a lens with a bit better build quality instead, but if you are on a budget then you certainly cant go wrong with this lens. It should be in everyones lens bag, but not because it is the best-est most awesome-est lens out there...just because it takes adequate shots for a very cheap price.

This lens has a wide open aperture at 1.4 allowing for great nighttime shots. The only downside is it won't zoom. It's worth every penny regardless.

(A Perfect Lens for Everyday and More)
『This is simply a fabulous lens -- it's almost never off my Canon 40D. I looked at the 1.8, which came highly recommended because of the price, but then I noticed comments that said it would probably last a year, because of the build. So I looked at the 1.4. This lens works well in so many conditions, it's sharp, has beautiful DOF, I just can't say enough about it. It's my first prime lens -- like a lot of people, I was attracted to the zoom feature of other lenses. But even though with this lens you have to zoom yourself, don't let that stop you at all.

I'm an intermediate level photographer. I highly recommend this lens for anyone around my level.』

『For a long time I had the 1.8 for use on my XTi, I finally made the move up to full frame and the 50/1.8 somehow did not sit right. I was slowly building up a trinity of fast primes, one wide, one telephoto and one normal and felt that the 50/1.8 lagged behind my 28/1.8 and 85/1.8 so I decided to take the plunge on the 50/1.4... I have never looked back. In general the reviews are right, shot at 1.4 it is not razor sharp, it is acceptable but does not capture jaw dropping detail, so I only shoot at this aperture when I am trying to feed as much light to the sensor as possible, but shot stopped down just a 1/3 of a stop to f1.6, it starts to sing.

On full frame this lens really shines, wide enough to get lots of the subject in, but long and fast enough that the DOF can be used to pick out points of interest or guide the viewers eyes. For full length portraits many people comment on the '3D' quality the images have caused by the out of focus areas in front and behind subjects. I love this lens for travel shots, the combination of wide and fast means you can get inventive with the 'tourist' shot having an out of focus person gazing out over a vista, or their face sharp and the famous landmark being a creamy but recognizable bokeh blur in the background. On a crop frame camera it would be too long for such a shot.

So what does the 50/1.4 give you over the 50/1.8 because that is the main quandary people face. It is noticeably better built, the autofocus is much better, you get that 2/3rd extra stop (which counts for a lot in DOF if not that much in light gathering), the 1.4 is sharper at equivalent f-stops (i.e. the 1.4 is sharper than my 1.8 when both are shot at f2). The con is it is 3-4 times the price.

All in all the proof was in the pudding and I do not regret one bit getting this lens and am very happy with it, if I was still on a crop frame however I am not so sure I would be.』

『Got a really nice copy. at f/1.4, it is still sharp unlike the others I've seen which is soft. I am happy I got this over the 50mm 1.8. The body of the 1.4 is really well built. Nice solid feeling. I debated on getting this or the 1.8, and decided to get the 1.4 based on its built. Its 3x more, but I think its worthed it. Read too many reviews on the 1.8, the lens just breaks apart after a few use. I picked up a lens hood to protect and reduce flare.』

Note that with the 1.6x "cropping" associated with most SLR's, this effectively is an 80mm lens.
