『I've read several books on Android from cover to cover, and skimmed several others, and "Hello, Android" is hands-down the best introduction to Android development.

Here's why I say that --

You really can get through the book in a day or two. The explanations are clear, the topics focus on what's relevant to getting started in Android development, and when you're done you have the skills to dive into the SDK to continue learning.

There is a consistent example project that is developed throughout the book. I found this very helpful, because it showed me how all the different parts fit together. For example, launching activities from an existing activity, using multiple classes in your project, adding preferences, etc.

There are very few (if any) "gotchas" in this book. I followed the examples step by step without any problem. I think some people have used the book's online forum to ask about which packages to import, but when I used Eclipse it was done automatically for me. (By the way, all the files are also online.)

Even after having many months of Android development under my belt, I find that I still refer back to this book from time to time. That's saying something for a book that sets out to be an introduction.

Remember, this book is a great introduction. If you already know Android and are looking for a deep-dive, look elsewhere. But if you are curious about all the excitement around Android and have a few hours to spare, spend them with this book and find out what developing in Android is all about.』

『The title, "Hello, Android", is perfect, because this is an introduction to Android. This is not designed as an exhaustive reference, nor should it be. Instead, it is the perfect length for quickly coming up to speed on the basics.

I am an experienced Java developer, and this book helped me learn Android quickly. It does not waste time explaining how to use Java, so if you are an absolute newbie, this might not be for you.

Android is rapidly evolving, and Ed is doing a great job keeping up with changes to Android. You can also get the PDF version, and Pragmatic Bookshelf lets you download beta chapters as they are updated.』

『Update: Changed my rating from 3 to 2 stars. I was going through the location chapter and stopped at this paragraph - "The code for the remaining methods of LocationTest--log( ), dumpProviders(), and dumpLocation( )--is not very interesting, so I won't bore you with it here. You can find it all in the downloadable samples on the book's website." This book is way to dependent on you going to the website. It presumes an internet connection, which might not be available wherever I might want to read this book (e.g. coffee shops) or might just be down. So I could just be stuck with incomplete code. I had a read through Pro Android and found that book to be excellent, only missing a section on SensorManager unfortunately. I would go with that one over Hello Android. I still rate this book with 3 stars despite how irritating I'm finding it. I figure it is irritating because of my learning style. It covers a wide range of topics, so it might still be worth having around.

It started out fine, and was able to breeze through, even though I had some problems with the initial Sudoku problem. Why I find this book so irritating is the order of the code. The author creates classes and methods that will eventually reference other classes and methods while never saying how the components all fit together. In the case of the Sudoku game, the game logic actually comes at the end of the one of the chapters, whereas for me it would make more sense to place this at the beginning of the chapter to get an understanding of how the game works and then build the xml interfaces on top of this as needed, allowing me to understand how all the components work together. It is obvious the author is just giving the code as he created it rather than going through how to create an Android app. This could just be the way I like to learn programming though. In between the code examples there is little in way of explanation either. I skipped ahead to another chapter to get away from the Sudoku example, and found it similar with poor-ordering and limited explanations.

Do visit the website as there is more help and corrections available.

『this book seemed to be leaving stuff out, even early on with the "hello, world" example. screen shots didn't match up. and the publisher's website offers a free upgrade if you purchased the electronic version. i guess i am screwed since i bought a printed one.

i did like how in the first part of the sudoku example the book had you program a little, then publish out and see the result. then a little more, and then see the result. but when you get to chapter 4, that practice is dropped. at that point on, there are just pages of code to muscle through. there is some explanation as you go along, but i really need to see the result of what i am doing in order to understand it. how about a little pay off every few pages?

i found myself eventually just copying the code from the publisher's site and going to the sdk for explanation. then i started to wonder why i paid for this book, if i was just going to be referencing the sdk online for free.

i had already ordered Professional Android Application Development (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) but picked this one up at a local store because i was too excited to wait. i guess i should have. "Professional Android Application Development" seems like it might be more helpful. we will see.』

(Good title for beginners, doesn't offer a lot of insight for experienced users.)
『The title basically says it all. I picked up this book for work to catch up on Android since we had a few projects dealing with it. Overall it's a great way to start teaching yourself, but it tries to force the xml way of handling all of your ui elements and resources, which was not a feasible option for our projects. This limited the book's usefulness for me, but I continued on and found it entirely readable, easy to follow, and I suspect for someone working on a purely android project a lot of useful information would be found in the book, but I think most professional programmers won't like this approach.

I rated this four stars for:
* easiness to read (doesn't bore you to sleep!)
* straight forward examples
* useful jumping off point.
Downsides were:
* it's scope (limited to a particular way of doing things, mostly)
* it's breadth (doesn't cover all the topics you want, just the big points).

I would cautiously recommend this book. Probably more of a 3.5 star book, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt. If you don't know anything about mobile development and are having a hard time working through the android example on google's dev site (or have completed it and want to know what's next), this might be a good book for you. If you're a seasoned professional, probably best to look/wait for another book or just start trying things out (and check out the SDK).』

『The book gives an interesting overview to Nokia, but at the same time it is an interesting story from the industrial revolution to the information society. Nokia has had a long way from paper, rubber, and cable business to cellular networks and handsets. It is also a story about different corporate strategies. Nokia used to be in several industries and huge diversified product portfolio. During the last 10 years Nokia has shifted its strategy to have a clear focus in the telecom industry. And all events are also related to politics.

Actually I feel the most interesting part of the book is 1970's and 1980's. It was the time when Nokia started the shift from paper and rubber industry to consumer electronics and telecom. This time had many dramatic events and great visions. 1990's is maybe the most boring part of the book. There are so many other books that tell about Nokia's most recent days and strategies.

I recommend this book. Especially, it put me to think that each strategy is always related to a prevailing political and business environment. Nokia has been able to successfully adjust its strategy to meet different needs and situations.』

As of today, no calls were ever returned, my airtime card has expired, my phone STILL displays roaming, and their only suggestion is that I buy another airtime card so THEY can resolve the problem. (Arguably "Thee" Best Instant Live Recording Of The Tour)
『First off, all the other Instant Live recordings from the Cult's 2006 tour are recorded on green dyed cd-rs. This release however arrived, to my pleasant surprise, on a factory pressed silver cd (meaning it will play in all cd players).
Other than the higher quality materials, this show has the best mix and sound of all the other shows I have heard (and I've heard them all). The band also plays a great set list too. The key here is John Tempesta's drumming; the other recordings do him no justice. The sound here is unbelievable with his drumming giving my subwoofer a beating. Tempesta's drumming on "Electric Ocean" will literally blow you away at higher volumes. Duffy's guitar is also upfront in the mix. In other IL recordings, Duffy's axe work is buried slightly below Astbury's vocals, not so here. Even though this is an Instant Live recording, it may be one of the best live documents I own. I strongly urge any Cult fan to buy this ASAP before they are all gone.
****FYI, the packaging on these recordings is not very durable. I ordered several from different zShop sellers; and the simple bumble mailer was not enough to keep them from getting damaged. These are limited edition/collector's item's, so order them from only the most reputable sellers.****』

『Think about the great moments in rock'n'roll; Tom Verlaine's solo in "Marquee Moon," the beginning of "Sweet Child O' Mine," the riff to "Toys in the Attic," and so on. Right up there is the grand finale of "Love Removal Machine." The "Start Me Up" riff suddenly turns into an enraged rave-up, with Billy Duffy playing as if Chuck Zito were chasing him. And you've got Ian Astbury shouting his ##@# off, contributing one of the greatest "AHHH YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH'S!" ever recorded. It's a thing of beauty. Now imagine a concert full of those moments.
After a four-year hiatus (with Astbury becoming to Jim Morrison what Rich Little was to Johnny Carson), The Cult came back to their beloved "Newww York Citayyyyyy" and completely destroyed it.
Opener "Lil' Devil" seemingly turned the Nokia into the world's biggest strip bar. "Sweet Soul Sister" sounded better than ever, with an extended jam set to Astbury berating security over ignoring a fight. On a particularly forbidding "Brother Wolf, Sister Moon," Chris Wyse played stand-up bass with bow, intensifying the song's phantasmagoric "Mary Shelley's Velvet Underground" vibe.
Another goth classic, "Phoenix," with its copped "I Wanna Be Your Dog" opening, took everyone into a psychedelic hell, and even some of us back to 1986, getting ready for our Bar-Mitzvah's.
Ex-White Zombie drummer John Tempesta was exceptional, giving the material more swing and spine. And Billy Duffy proved that, despite its current neutered state, rock'n'roll still has guitar heroes, and he's one of the greatest.
On "Spiritwalker" and "She Sells Sanctuary," Duffy showed off his alternative/goth roots with swirly U2/Bunnymen melodies, and celebrated his inner Angus Young/Tony Iommi on "Wildflower" and "Peace Dog." "Rise" combined both sides, as he simultaneously channeled Robert Smith and the late Dimebag Darrell. It's no wonder their fan base is so diverse.
Ian Astbury was in prime form, still screaming after all these years, and making unintentionally funny proclamations like "Songs of innocence, songs of experience." And yes, they ended with "Love Removal Machine," which would probably not fall under "innocence."
In '89, Astbury sang, "Hell's Kitchen is a crazy place." While times have changed, it's nice to see The Cult haven't. Long may they wreak havoc.』

(Auburn fans grab this while you can)
『This dvd celebrates the ending to one of the best seasons in the history of Auburn football. For Tiger fans it couldnt have gotten any better except having a shot at the national title. It was a good game that for the most part was dominated by the defenses, since Auburn was the #1 defense in scoring and V Tech was #3 if I am not mistaken.

The quality of the picture is no better than it is on tv, so dont expect groundbreaking remastering through the whole game. But why would that matter? Auburn fans can now relive the 2005 Sugar Bowl whenever they want, so I tell you its worth the roughly $20 it costs in stores. As far as I can tell besides used on Amazon, this dvd was available at Movie Gallery locations in Alabama, book stores in Auburn, and at Auburntigers.com online store. So if you are a die-hard AU fan then this is the essential item to have in your collection. A 16-13 win over Virginia Tech and a 13-0 season. Still sounds great. Also, if you live in Alabama, some Movie Gallery stores and bookstores carry the Fighting Soldiers DVD, which is the season-long highlight DVD which includes some of the best plays, radio calls, etc. during the course of the championship season. That is also an essential if you can find it.』

(A must for any tiger fan.)

(You Might Need the Updated Version)
『Nice product, works well and comes with Lithium batteries. Mine is for my emergency prepared kit; like power outages, hurricanes, etc. As for the confusion about the 3 plugs it claims to come with, I called Energizer today about this. There is an updated model that does include the small Nokia plug in it for the newer Nokia phones, as a matter of fact the updated model does have 3 different plugs included in it. The updated model apparently uses the same part number; the part number is CEL2NOK, however the updated package says for Nokia / Palm Treo, if the package just says Nokia on it you will only get the older one with one larger size plug. Hope I was helpful.

On the actual product received it states on the packaging ( outside) "Includes 1 Cell phone charger, 1 Nokia tip, 2 Energiser e Lithium AA batteries" Inside the packaging you will indeed only find 1 Nokia tip as stated on the packaging, and of course this is the "thicker"tip for older Nokia models and NOT the new thinnest ever tip for Nokia's latest smart phones such as the Nokia 6110 Novigator, the Nokia E65 etc. Thus the description given by Amazon of 3 tips is not just misleading , it's totally false and not an error with the product I received. The description of "works on most Nokia phones" is therefor also highly dubious. Thanks Amzon, I have waited 5 weeks for this to get to me in South Africa, checked the information you provided again and again to ensure usability, yet now I am still stuck with a prduct that it totally useless to me and a mere refund is not compensating for this serious errot ss well as time and postage wasted.』

『Contrary to the picture on Amazon web site, the package comes with only one power connector. The connector is for older Nokia phones. Newer Nokia phones (e.g. 6103) uses a smaller power connector and won't fit. Total waste of time to purchase and return. I wrote Amazon about the error, but they haven't fixed their web site. The three stars does not reflect the product quality because I did not use it. Rather it is due to both Energizer and Amazon errors in describing the product. If you go to Energizer web site, you see picture of three power connectors, too.』

    『I sit it in the sun for 10 hours and it charges my blackberry for about 15 minutes. The battery meter didn't register any change. It won't charge my Ipod Touch.』

    (It don't work with iPhone! It does not charge it AT ALL.)
    『The instructions are a joke, but you can figure it out on your own. Put under sunlight (or any light, really) and the green LED comes on - should mean it is charging - plug a cable and the red LED comes on, even if the other end of the cable is not connected to anything.

    This unit fails to charge the iPhone. The phone will beep and it appears it is being charged, but look more carefully and you will see that the battery icon changes it back to normal state instead of displaying the little bolt that indicates is being charged. This is because the solar panel has an internal battery that accumulates charge from solar power, then it gets transferred to the device you wish to charge, but the battery does not put out enough amperage to charge anything meaningful.

    The only successful device I was able to charge is a portable little speaker, nothing else. So, good idea, but lousy product.』

    『I bought this unit the same time I bought the Solar battery / charger (i101) - 1250mAh rechargeable polymer solar battery (charger) for cell-phone, mp3 player, media player. With 6 USB adapters. I wanted a reliable unit to send to my son who is studying in India and seems to have problems keeping his Blackberry charged.

    This unit is larger than the other one, and has twice as much solar area. It seems cheaply made, though, and the instruction manual is pathetic - poorly translated Chinese, and very little of it. You better be able to figure out the device.

    It does charge my Blackberry ok. I charged it off my USB port (it has no separate mains charger, while the other one has a mains charger with a USB cable so you can use either mains or USB) and it worked fine, and I left it on my dashboard and it charged up fine.

    Still, I will send the other unit as it seems better made and is slightly smaller.』

    during the trip it recharged two Nokia N95, my Bluetooth GPS and my other Cellphone.

    I really recommend this product, as it's sturdy, light, very responsive to light (it worked even in the light of a light bulb) and comes with a lot of connectors.』

    『This 2 GB microSD card works perfectly in my Motorola EM 326g phone. I have to use a microSD card instead of a microSDHC card (any card with a 4 GB or larger capacity) because microSDHC cards are not compatible with my phone. (If you have trouble getting your device to recognize a microSDHC card, try using a microSD card instead.)

    Devices that accept microSDHC cards are backward compatible, so this Kingston 2 GB microSD card will work with all devices that take either a microSD or a microSDHC card.

    The SD adapter comes in very handy for use in devices that take SD cards. The adapter works with both microSD and microSDHC cards. I don't have a device that takes miniSD cards, so I have no use for the miniSD adapter - and I doubt I ever will since miniSD cards are obsolete.

The sound is tinny and sometimes forces a reboot in order not to come out static-y. It makes a sound like it is lying against a metal object when it isn't...For $40, I'd say definitely not worth it. I am ordering a replacement today after only a few months and am going to spend a little more to get something that sounds decent. Am upset to have wasted $40. Save your money.』

They were clearly weaker than my laptops built-in speakers, which are not that great.

    I recommend these only if your current laptop does not have its own speakers, otherwise it's basically the same or worse for playing music as standard built-in laptop speakers.』

I was looking for a pair of mini stand-alone speakers for a computer that I use for youtube and instructional video type stuff where I don't need great stereo audio but the internal speakers just aren't good enough. This is where these fit it. They take up no actual desk space and are much louder than the internals and quality is good too. I ordered another one and I wouldn't hesitate to give these as gifts. My one tiny con is that it doesn't have an on/off or volume control but they work off of the same controls as the internals so wtf.』

    『This is the second Plantronics Voyager 510 headset that I have owned. The first one was GREAT. So after 3 years it died and I made no hesitation to buy another one. But the new one is HORRIBLE. I literally have to hold my phone in the air above my head for it to work. I cannot move more than 2 feet away from my phone before it quits working. It has a constant static sound in the headset so bad that it is completely useless.』

    (For the price...what did I expect?)
    『This is my first bluetooth earpiece, and I bought this purely on the number of "good" reviews it had. I just want to sum up my experience in point form, to help future buyers.
    Programmability - pretty simple. Put your phone on discover mode, turn on the headset and give it a minute.
    Functionality - simple single press to connect and disconnect calls. If you want to transfer call from headset to phone and back, press and hold for two seconds.
    Quality - volume is an issue. Once you start driving and ambient noise is high, it becomes very difficult to hear. I've had several people complain of not being able to hear me. I pretty much have the headset maxed out in volume at all times. The other issue is breakup or choppy signal..."you're breaking up". The voice activation "lady" who speaks to you needs to be way, way louder. Not sure if it's my phone or not. It works ok.
    Battery Life - Not sure if the battery life is affecting the breakup or choppy signal factor. There are times I don't charge it for days and be fine, and some days it's choppy all the time.
    Ergonomic - it fits nice, pretty simple to place around ear with one hand. But the earpiece should feel snug in the ear, and this headset just sits there and moves around. Possibly a factor in my loudness complaint above.
    Overall - I am returning this headset. It's more of a nuisance. I get way too many complaints. For the price I paid, is this the best you get? Anyway, I'm going to look for a better quality one.

    『I bought this product for $90 from eBay. I bought it hoping that it will live up to the standards set by Nokia Maps that I've used on my Nokia N75 phone.

    The only reason why I'm rating this product low is because it has 2007 maps and Nokia does not provide latest maps.

    Pros:-
    - interface is consistent with Nokia Maps, that is available on cell phone
    - locks on to up to 8 satellites
    - has FM transmitter that can be used to broadcast songs, video and turn-by-turn directions (this is good if you feel that the sound is not load enough, especially if you are driving with window open)
    - good routing algorithm
    - pretty quick to recalculate route
    - if the turn is within a mile then it displays (and speaks) in yards, for the next turn. This is helpful in downtown
    - pretty accurate pronunciation of street names

    Cons:-
    - old (2007) maps
    - no option to update the maps
    - if you do not enter the state and directly type in the zip code, then it takes up to 4 secs find the city
    - device screen freezes if you play with all the features at the same time.
    - takes up to 4 minutes to lock on to a satellite
    - synced with phone for phone numbers, but did not pick up the address from contacts

    With out dated maps, I don't think its worth buying the device.
    Nokia should definitely provide maps update feature, if they want this product to be sold in the market.

    『Summary: Many people complain about this GPS for little glitches it has, but if you forget the idea "you get what you pay for" for a moment and stop finding its flaws, it's really good GPS for the price. Decent map data, Free Traffic info, nice Blue-tooth functionality and maps of multiple countries are enough to make this GPS worth more than its price, let aside other tons of features that might have glitches because its the first of its kind from Nokia. First thing you would want to do to utilize this GPS fully, is to get an 8GB SDHC card (2GB card that comes with it has only 700MB remaining), so that you can install maps of more countries, MP3 songs and MP4 videos (and may be more software applications!).

    This GPS has tons of features for the price. If you get it within $150 its totally worth it. It is not the perfect GPS, but surely an innovative product from Nokia to enter the GPS market.

    It has decent map data and navigation software. Sometimes it's slow to acquire satellite signal. Once locked it works as a charm. Inside my apartment it doesn't lock at all, it did once when I started it for the first time, but have had no luck catching any satellite signal inside my apartment since then :(. Sometimes it might re-route you in a stupid way but its a stupid computer after all, no human. I'm sure all other GPS also do that occasionally. Like most of the expensive GPS you have Text-to-speech (TTS), mediocre Points-of-Interest (POI) database, pedestrian mode, you can browse the map interactively instead of navigating the route, you can save a location (its co-ordinates) without entering its address if you had to come back to that location, it even has TMC for traffic. Most of the people have overseen this feature TMC in their reviews. I see all bars in TMC signal and tells me "No congestion reported" when I view traffic information, but haven't used it long enough to tell weather it really shows you congestion and re-routes you. Free traffic without any subscription is a steal for such a cheap price. Other brands have Traffic only in models costing more than $300. Like that wasn't enough they threw in free maps of major countries of the whole world. Yes!, that's right the software CD that comes with it has maps of many European countries and also some asian countries (including India where I am from :)). Some brands don't even give you Canada or Maxico maps, how cheap of them.

    Because Nokia originally made this GPS for Europe I think they have re-packaged those units manufactured for Europe to sell in the U.S. So you might not find exact content of package that they list on Nokia website. Instead of miniSD and an adapter you get regular SD card with U.S. maps pre-installed and you don't get the carrying pouch!, ouch!, hehe not really, its not a big deal. I was shocked a bit at first when I saw these differences from contents of package because I thought the reseller gave me a re-manufactured product. But then I found from other reviews that this is how it is sent by Nokia. It is still good for the price even if it were a re-manufactured unit :). Also for the same reason that these were meant to be sold in Europe originally, there is no U.S. product support webpage on nokiausa.com (They do have a support page on their U.K. website). That said, they do have an auto-update software in the CD that came with it. I am not sure if the auto-update software only updates the firmware or it also updates the Map data. I wouldn't be surprised if it also updated the Map data as well because Nokia owns Navteq now. Even if they don't have map updates (which I assumed when I bought this GPS) I can still use it for few years until it gets outdated (pre-installed maps are dated Feb 2008) then throw it away because Garmin, Magellean and TomTom charge 100 bucks or more for map updates while this GPS itself was 100 bucks :). (Yeah, I prepare for all downsides while buying something like this, unlike those who don't research about the product before buying and later on complain "They don't have map updates!". Well do you know if Garmin has map updates for a particular model and how much it costs?)

    FM transmitter, I think purposefully, has weak signal to keep you within legal range. So you might have static depending on the channel and where you place the GPS, you might have to find a sweet-spot in your car for optimal FM reception. I think it's best to use audio out and connect to car's aux-in.

    I haven't used blue-tooth feature yet which most of the people comment is one of the best feature of this product. It plays mp3 songs fine, video playing is a little hassle, it only plays Quicktime MP4 format videos. So you have to re-encode your videos in Quicktime MP4 format. I wish it played DivX instead.

    One of the reviewers says its hackable>:), I searched on google and he is right. You can unlock it to get to Windows CE desktop and install softwares like MS Word. I haven't tried this yet, but the first thing I would like to install is DivX decoder!』
