(No On/Off switch)
『This dispenser doesn't have the On/Off switch, which was not immediately clear from reading the item description. Unplugging it all the time is not a good or safe option. I returned it to the seller and was charged approx. $9 for shipping』

(Still well worth the money and counter space 2 years later)
『I like the looks and the feature set -- 3 temperatures, autolock with "unlock" button -- is just right.

Boiling a full fresh 2-L pot takes several minutes. I tend to keep mine topped up whenever it gets down to about half, and that takes much less time to bring up to temperature. It does seem to re-boil the water whenever the top is opened, rather than only bringing it up to the set point. That's probably a very good thing, as far as keeping it from becoming a microbial breeding ground.

I used to unplug it when I left the house because I was worried about fire hazards; I stopped after the first few weeks because the outside barely gets warm to the touch, except at the top near the vent, where it's quite warm. When it's boiling water, it does let off a bit of steam through the top vent. When not running the boil cycle it lets out very little steam - I can comfortably cup my hand over the vent for several minutes; the plastic is warmer than the air above the vent - so I usually leave it shoved under a cabinet except when I've just added water. The underside of the cabinet is about 4 inches away and I cannot feel any temperature difference between that surface and the other cabinets nearby.

I do wish I'd bought a larger one. When I purchased this, I thought I'd use it for a cup of tea or two a day and 2 liters would be plenty. Now that I have plenty of hot water on demand, and at just the right temperature, I drink a lot more tea and my roommate has joined me. I also use it for all sorts of other hot-water needs (instant soups and cereals, for example) so that it needs refilling daily.

With that note about the heavy use it gets, it functions beautifully with minimal cleaning. Every now and then when it runs empty I wipe out the interior. Beyond that, I've only descaled it once in over 2 years, and that was because the calcium build-up on the heating element was making it take too long to boil my water -- there was no clogging or pressure/volume reduction.

I didn't review this when I bought it because as much as I loved it, I expected the calcium in the local water to clog it in a matter of weeks to months. Now I have something more valuable to say: it keeps working, month after month, with minimal attention, for years.』

(Great water boiler, but it is NOT stainless steel!)
『As others have said, this is a great little water boiler. However, the product image makes it look like it has a stainless steel finish. In reality, the "silver" finish is just colored plastic. The overall texture and finish is similar to a very cheap digital camera, unlike the typical glossy floral print zojirushi finish.

Save a few dollars and get the Zojirushi CD-JSC22 instead.』

(Indispensable for the tea lover)
『I'm an avid tea drinker who used to boil water via the microwave. A few years back, I sprang for an electric kettle and swore never to go back to the microwave. The problem with my kettle was that its only function was to boil water, which made using it to brew green or white teas rather tricky. I looked extensively at water boilers with temperature settings but never quite found one that I liked. While at a high-end tea shop, this dispenser caught my eye and was highly recommended by the shop's employees. It seemed a bit of a steep price but I sprang for it and have never regretted a single penny I spent on it.

The unit has three temperature settings: 208, 195, and 175. 195 is still a bit higher than the recommended temp for greens but since the unit is manufactured in Japan, I figured they know a thing or two about green tea. This is the setting I use most consistently as I drink a lot of green tea and I've found it to be an ideal temperature setting for greens. In the past, greens sometimes tasted bitter or cooked due to the water temp being off but that is now a thing of the past. I simply need to plug my unit in, set it to 195 and, once the water reaches that temp, I can brew the perfect cup of green tea all day long.

I also love that the unit is a dispenser and not just a kettle. This enables me to have tea at pretty much the instant I want it. If I decide to drink a black or an herbal, I simply need to adjust the temp setting and wait for the unit to heat the water to the appropriate level. Water can be dispensed at any time, whether or not the water has reached the programmed temperature.

I've been using this machine for a year now and it still works every bit as beautifully as it did the day I bought it. When the scale builds up, I simply run the machine through its descaling cycle using a mixture of water and white vinegar, which works perfectly. The machine is really well constructed with several thoughtful features, such as a swivel base and a cord that connects magnetically to the unit, allowing quick and easy removal of the cord when the unit needs to be tipped over a sink and emptied. I absolutely adore this machine and would never again want to be without it.』

(can't live without it)
『If you use hot water throughout the day, this thing is the best. It's the best looking of all the water dispensers, but I only wish that it had a bigger capacity. By the way, Zojirushi is really the standard for Japanese small appliances, and I know at least 6 households with some model of their hot water dispensing pot. All of the newer ones are superb and it just depends on the look, size and volume to determine which one you prefer.
We use it to make tea, add water to espresso for americanos, and any other time we need hot water. It was virtually indispensable when our baby was born since we used it constantly to warm up breastmilk.』

『The ZUTTO Micom Electric Dispensing Pot features one-touch electric dispensing system for easy dispensing, and an easy-to-read LCD display that shows actual water temperature at all times. Color - Silver』

(Great but Short-lived)
『We purchased the Panasonic NN-H965WF on July 28, 2005. It was wonderful, and one of the most attractive ones we found. We selected it partly because a 9x13 glass baking dish would fit in it with ease. The microwave refused to run more than a few seconds tonight, and emitted a bad smell so it is now unplugged and waiting to be hauled away. We expected it to last far longer than four years, three and a half months! Our old Sharp gave faithful service for over twenty-five years!!!』

(Unreliable -- stay away!)

UNRELIABLE -- I have had mine about 4 years. I had to have it repaired a couple of times under warranty, and then two more time that I paid for. Now it has failed yet again. If I were to repair it this time, my repair costs would exceed my purchase price.

INTERFERES WITH WIRELESS NETWORK -- when on, it brought my wireless networking essentially to a stop. The microwave it replaced has slightly more power, and has no discernible effect on my wireless network. For now, I am going back to that.

BOTTOM LINE -- I'm going back to my older microwave, and if I really do miss having one this big will buy something other than a Panasonic.

Too bad about the problems, because I like the large size (for large baking dish, or defrosting a good-sized roast), and (when it works) it cooks well. I just cannot see paying $60 or so per year to have it fixed (not to mention the inconvenience).』

(I'm SCARED to buy this)
『Based on the reviews I've read here, I am scared to buy this appliance! Based on the reviews I've read on other microwaves, I'm scared to buy ANY microwave!

It appears that QUALITY and LONGEVITY are not priorities of ANY manufacturer. I think they want you to buy a new (anything electronic) every year or two. Sorry (appliance manufacturer) - I'm not going there.

I don't have that kind of disposable income.』

(We have had two similar Panasonic ovens and I would be VERY concerned with durability on this one.)
『I have to note that I do not own this particular model. Models change from year to year, and the limitation of Amazon reviews is that they tend to be made by new owners.

Based on my experience with two predecessors to this oven, however, I want to leave potential buyers with a caveat:

The first lasted barely a year before it died: the oven stopped heating, and the timer was messed up.

Because we liked the large size and other features, we purchased the next year's model. This one lasted four years, but this morning it died the same death--would only set for a few seconds, generated no heat during that time.

Our previous microwaves (Quasar and Sharp) lasted for over ten years, and based on the similar symptoms on the two Panasonic models, I just wanted to caution buyers that this may not be the best oven available.』

(A Great Beast)
『If you're looking for a tiny, manageable thing: don't get this one. It takes more space than you might imagine. But it works! Like a champ. And after going through 3 GE machines, and counting on the reviews I found here for some prepurchase comfort, I'll add my 2 cents and tell everyone: "This Microwave is worth it from all angles." I am totally satisfied with this muthu'.』

(A good one)
『I believe that this album is great, but don't expect to be impressed first time you hear it. Give it some time...
"Silent city" track is 30 minutes long with a VERY slow way of story telling. follow it with patience, and after 30 minutes, you will find the end of this nice story.

(Disappointing)
『Kalhor has some excellent albums, but this one (Silent City) is terrible. Try "Ghazal" instead, or better yet, try compilations such as "Masters of Persian Music."』

(A Masterpiece)
『I recently heard a track from this CD on WRUV-FM at the University of Vermont. I had to stop everything I was doing and listen in awe. Iranian Kayhan Kalhor is internationally renowned for his magic with the kamancheh (a Persian spiked fiddle). Brooklyn Rider is a string quartet based in New York City but with an international reputation as well.

This collaboration has it's roots in musical friendships formed at Tanglewood in 2000, where musicians had gathered for Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project. A trip to Iran followed in 2004, and then three of the pieces were developed in 2005-2008. Arrangement of the longest piece, "Silent City" (29:10) was commissioned by the Carnegie Hall Corporation.

The result of the musician's efforts is a work of musical beauty that brings together Persian myths and classical traditions with contemporary Western music of the classical form. The musicians are listed as: Kayhan Kalhor - kamancheh, setar; Colin Jacobsen - violin; Jonathan Gandelsman - violin; Nichilas Cords - viola; Eric Jacobsen - cello; Jeff Beecher - bass; Mark Suter - percussion.

Believe me, I wouldn't take the time to write this if I wasn't simply enthralled with this CD.

(Wondeerful collection, one caveat)
『I have nothing to add to the rave reviews above (below?) -- I too grew up with Fiedler, and wish there were someone like him today making classical music accessible and fun for all ages.

If I'd been doing the selecting, however, I'd have dropped most of the George M. Cohan medleys and added more Leroy Anderson -- "Christmas Festival Overture", "Fiddle Faddle", "Clarinet Candy", "Blue Tango", all those wonderful light, inventive pieces the Boston Pops made famous. Anderson is one of our great underrated American composers.』

(Must Have)
『When I was a child in the late 50's and 60's, the evening meal was eaten at the dining table, with the whole family gathered together. We always had music playing ... usually Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra. This great collection of Arthur Fiedler's works includes many of Fiedler's favorites, but also many of my family's favorites, too.

I have my entire CD collection in ITunes, and added this compilation to the others. I now have over 16 Fiedler CD collections, which total over 28 CD's. I am surprised at how many pieces are not duplicated from other CD's or CD collections in "100 Fiedler Favorites."

When I first played these 7 CD's, I was thrilled. However, when I compared the duplicates from this collection to the other CD's, I was greatly disappointed in the tonal quality.

When I mentioned this to someone who has used ITunes longer than I have, he suggested that I re-import my entire collection at 320 kbps, instead of the default setting (128 kbps) that I had used. Some hours later, I was glad that I had taken the time.

While I can still hear a SLIGHT difference in the sound quality, it is minimal. Unless you bounce back and forth between two recordings of the same piece, it IS NOT obvious. I am once again delighted with this collection.

Based on it's name, one would expect to have 100 pieces in this collection. Yet, in true Fiedler fashion, there is an encore, making a total of 101!

If you enjoy this, I would also recommend the Fiedler Legacy collection, as a supplement to 100 Fiedler Favorites. (If I could only have one, I would PROBABLY choose "100 Fiedler Favorites" but The Arthur Fiedler Legacy, as a set, is pretty spectacular, too) The Arthur Fiedler Legacy is not sold as a set; each of the 5 CD's is sold separately.

"The Arthur Fiedler Legacy: Stars and Stripes: An American Concert" includes 76 Trombones, Trumpeter's Lullaby, The Entertainer, Bernstein's Music from Mass, variations on America, etc. (Not found on Amazon on 5/7/08.)

"The Arthur Fiedler Legacy: Symphonic Spectacular" includes 1812 Overture, Sabre Dance, Bolero, Bach's Fugue in G Major, Danse Macabre, etc. The Arthur Fiedler Legacy: Symphonic Spectacular

"The Arthur Fiedler Legacy: Evening at Pops" includes Aquarius from "Hair", Blue Danube, Gypsy Baron March, Tubby the Tuba, In the Hall of the Mountain King, Dream Pantomime from Hansel&Gretel, etc.The Arthur Fiedler Legacy: Evening at the Pops

"The Arthur Fiedler Legacy: From Famous Broadway to Hollywood's Reel Thing" includes medleys from Fiddler on the Roof, Mary Poppins, Star Wars Theme, Alfie, Midnight Cowboy and Day by Day from "Godspell," etc. The Arthur Fiedler Legacy: From Fabulous Broadway to Hollywood's Reel Thing

"The Arthur Fiedler Legacy: Superstars and Songbooks" includes I think I love you, King of the Road, Do you know the way to San Jose, Leaving on a Jet Plane, etc. Superstars and Songbooks: Pops by Arrangement

Those 5 Legacy sets, each with 2 CD's, when added to "100 Fiedler Favorites," make a total of 265 pieces, for a total of nearly 21 hours of listening! Yet I only see 8 duplicates: Little Fugue in G minor, Stardust, Jalousie, Dream Pantomime from Hansel and Gretel, Sabre Dance, Days of Wine&Roses, Blue Danube and, of course, Stars and Strips Forever.

My only disappointment in either 100 Fiedler Favorites or the Legacy collections, is the arrangement of the songs. I understand why Arthur Fiedler Legacy CD's are packaged the way they are: The title of the CD explains the style of music.

With the 100 Fiedler Favorites, the first 3 CD's are a nice mix of Light Classical music. CD #4 is mostly Strauss waltzes and polkas, with a waltz by Lehar and Waldteufel thrown in for good measure. CD #5 is mostly marches, including, but not limited to, patriotic marches. CD #6 features American composers who lived in this century: Gershwin, Copeland, Gould, Rodgers, Anderson and Cohen. CD #7 is primarily a mix of more "current" songs (Bearing in mind that Fiedler died in 1979, "current" is current for his time: Mancini and the Beatles, Stevie Wonder; I Left My Heart in San Francisco; The First Time I Saw Your Face; Smoke Gets in Your Eyes).

I personally would have preferred a mix of all of these, rather than straight CD's of one type of music. (Which is why I like ITunes!)

If you are a Fiedler fan, or enjoy the light classics, this is a "Must Have" set.

(Very satisfying)
『Favorites from my youth, wonderful to hear again. Fine selection, musically and technically high class. We listen to them often.』

("100 FIEDLER FAVORITES- THE BOSTON POPS")
『This is a great compilation recorded in the days of "The Boston Pops" greatest director Arthur Fiedler. You will be delighted in listening long and forgotten recordings by Fiedler's Pops, like Gershwin, "Cuban Overture", "Prince Igor, Polovetsian Dances" etc. etc. A must have for all classical music and Boston Pops Fans. This great compilation makes one reminisce of old times Boston and its silver shining cold autumn afternoons and strolls on the Boston Common. The days when Arthur Fiedler's Boston Pops presence was felt in "The Hub". Don't miss this great CD album set.』

(Much more than you ever imagine!)

Who can deny Arthur Fielder was the most charismatic American conductor of the Century? . This acknowledgement goes far beyond the fact his countless efforts for bringing the academic music to wider audiences. His gifts as conductor have deserved him several insurmountable versions ( Liszt' Preludes, De Sousa, Strauss ` Thunder Polka, Mendelssohn' s Fingal cave, Gershwin's works and so many other radiant performances) .

Fielder got simply to express with major level of Dionysian euphoria, showy elegance, pristine brilliantness, and orchestral coloratura, the sense and heartfelt conviction about the meaning of the works he used to conduct.

Don't miss these jeweled performances.

『Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Those concerts were free; these seven compact discs are not--not quite. But for any lover of light classical music, they are certainly one of the best buys available. The orchestra (essentially the Boston Symphony) is one of the world's greatest; the music, fromSmoke Gets in Your Eyesto theGoyescas IntermezzoandRide of the Valkyriesis instantly enjoyable and permanently valuable; the conductor is at the same time genial and exacting, convinced that any music you play, no matter how frivolous, deserves the best you can give it.--Joe McLellan

(The Mentalist vs. Big Daddy and friends . . .)
『Featuring an army of zombies, and ample gore, George Romero's zombie saga continues in Land of the Dead (2005), where the vicious and bloody war with the undead, evolves to a new level.

Humans are barricaded inside a section of a city, that is surrounded by water. They are safe, because the zombies don't cross water, but that's about to change. While the peons dwell on the streets, the privileged elite reside inside a high class luxury building called Fiddler's Green. Among them is Kaufman (Dennis Hopper), administrator of the supplies department, a group that leaves the safety of the city to forage for supplies in zombieland. Riley Denbo (Simon Baker, The Mentalist) leads the supplies group, scrounging among the hoards of the undead, who have an insatiable hunger for human flesh.

Cholo (John Leguizamo) a member of the supplies team, steals 'Dead Reckoning', a heavily armored vehicle used on supply runs, after Kaufman shoots down his bid to become a resident in 'The Green'. With Cholo holding the vehicle for ransom, Kaufman sends Riley, and his pal Charlie (Robert Joy), ex-streetwalker Slack (Asia Argento) along with his team of mercenaries to try and get the vehicle back.

Meanwhile Big Daddy, who ran a service station before joining the ranks of the undead, has begun to take a leadership role. Soon the zombies are on the march, and nothing can stop them.

With headshots, bodies torn open and guts ripped out, decapitations, and limbs being pull off and munched on, Land of the Dead delivers tons of explicit gore. Dispatching the 'stenches' is so routine for the supplies team, that inattention and carelessness results in team casualties. A bit of a self confident know it all, unphased by anything, Denbo's demeanor is reminiscent of Patrick Jane, the character Baker plays in The Mentalist, a guy who tries to maneuver and outthink people. Kaufman represents the privilege of wealth, looking to survive any way he can, while Cholo contributes the most, to what little real emotion there is. It is chaos when the zombies attack 'The Green', though more mayhem could have been done. The same goes for Dead Reckoning, where the full destructive potential is not fully realized.

Land of the Dead has lots of extras, including various featurettes, and a commentary track with George Romero, editor Michael Daughtery, and producer Peter Grunwald. The unrated director's cut is a slightly longer and a little more gore. Those interested in Romero's continuing zombie saga should be sure to check this out. The violence and gore are definitely there, though the story may or may not satisfy.』

(A very good film, but a below average Living Dead installment)
『To begin with, there's nothing wrong with this film. Strong directing and camera work, solid acting, nice special effects, and an interesting setting/premise work together to create a post-apocalyptic zombie film that is fun, borderline thought-provoking, and keeps one's interest throughout. However, as an installment in Romero's Living Dead series, it fails to hold its own.

In each of the previous Living Dead installments, Romero brought something new to the human drama, even while the basic premise essentially stayed the same. In the first film, it was an issue of humans having to work together in a crisis (with strong racial issues implied throughout). In the second film, there was a more analytical exploration of quality of life as a band of survivors is forced to confront loneliness, lack of purpose, and excessive consumerism. In the third film, man's inhumanity to man was explored in a far more merciless way and, as a side note, Romero showed that the zombies were capable of evolving into relatively benign and compassionate creatures, thus raising the question of who the real monsters were.

The problem is that Land of the Dead fails to add anything to this. Man is still being inhuman to man (though not in as compelling and terrifying a way), and the bit about the zombies evolving is forced down our throat like its a new idea. The human city is an interesting setting for a zombie film, and the armored tank ("Dead Reckoning") is certainly cool, but amidst all of the bells and whistles that make up this film, there is no true insight into the human condition at its core. Rich people are evil and mentally challenged people can be useful. That's all the film seems to say. There's a muddled message about terrorism in there somewhere too, but it's not of Romero's usual caliber.

Of course my biggest gripe with this film has nothing to do with its quality at all. I've been a Romero fan since I was a kid, and in all those years, across multiple viewings of each film prior to this one, it was always my understanding that the zombie disease was passed like a virus. A zombie bit you and BAM, you became a zombie too. In the first film, scrambling scientists speculate that extra-terrestrial radiation has caused all of the dead to rise, but I always assumed we weren't supposed to accept that explanation. After all, nowhere in any of the films do we ever see someone die of natural causes and then re-animate. All deaths are caused by zombies.

However, toward the beginning of LAND, a man hangs himself and immediately reanimates. It's entirely incidental to the plot, but it shatters mine and many people's forty year old misconception. I suppose this shouldn't make a big deal, but it does. Romero's basic premise is therefore no different than Ed Wood's in Plan 9 from Outer Space. Personally, I feel there's something far more compelling and exciting about the viral premise. The idea that one "patient zero" could start a global pandemic of this proportion fascinates me and somehow makes the outlandish premise just a little more believable than the idea that the dead are rising everywhere. I was the kind of kid that used to play Sim City, and my favorite part would be starting a fire in one building and seeing how fast it could spread across the city. No, I'm not a sadist or a delinquent. I'm a normal guy who is fascinated by destructive domino effects; how quickly one small occurrence can send ripples across cities, countries, and even continents. Land of the Dead has killed all of that for me. It's taken something away from the old Living Dead films that I used to get so much more out of.

So, in the end, Land of the Dead is a solid zombie post-apocalypse film, but if you love Romero's Living Dead films for the same reasons that I do, this is a film that you may choose to skip.』

(Not as good as Diaries of the Dead...)
『If you love George Romero and/or love zombie flicks in general, you will like this. Visually appealing. Not quite as epic as Dawn of the Dead. Few things are. ;)』

(This time it's personal!)
『The shuffling, lurching, snail-paced zombies are back, and this time they're showing signs of intelligence - more, in fact, than some of their living counterparts. This outing for Romero's living dead is reasonably entertaining and sometimes amusing. What's missing though is the acerbic humour that there has been in some of the previous movies. This is a straightforward zombie gorefest, and as such is pretty successful. It's worth mentioning Simon Baker, who plays against type and makes a surprisingly good intelligent action hero. Fun but forgettable.』

(Disappointing - all gore, no story)
『A continuation of Romero's Dawn of the Dead saga, this time a small group of survivors have gathered and barricaded themselves into a city (pretty clearly Pittsburgh for anyone who knows that city, although I don't think they ever directly mention this) and try to maintain some semblance of normalcy with the zombie hordes outside the walls. The zombies now have some type of rudimentary intelligence and can work together, they just aren't a group of mindless automatons. In this story the zombies assemble to lay siege to the city where the survivors are holed up.

My reaction to this film (and apparently shared by many other Amazon reviewers) was `Eh, nothing special'. Without the link to Romero's early zombie classics, this film would be fairly forgettable. There is lots of zombie mayhem in the story and lots of gore, but the story itself is pretty lame, and the acting is poor. The main bad guy isn't the zombies but the boss of the city (played by Dennis Hopper). He is more interested in acquiring money than anything else, and this seems pretty ridiculous given that society has totally collapsed. It seems to me that most survivors would be more than happy if he wanted to accumulate green pieces of paper.

The story starts as a small group of survivors is travelling around in indian country in a heavily armored vehicle (equipped with rockets and machine guns) searching for supplies. They loot a small town and snuff some zombies, but there is some tension within the group as some of the members are more interested in find loot they can turn into money (like liquor) than finding food or useful items. Upon their return to the city, it is pretty clear that Dennis Hopper is taking advantage of the situation to oppress the people and enrich his own pockets. The zombies in the looted town however decide they want payback and march to the city to destroy it. What follows is more than an hour of mayhem and the survivors fight each other and the zombies in a bloody free-for-all.

There are lots of gory scenes of humans fighting zombies, but this movie is undone by the weak storyline. I thought the stories in the first two movies in this series were great even though they didn't have the special effects of Land of the Dead. In the end, the only memorable feature of this film is the special effects. Watch once? Hell yes, for any fan of Romero or the zombie genre. Don't know that I would actually buy it though.』

『Universal Pictures Land of the Dead (Unrated Director's Cut) (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD)Packed with more heart-pounding and blood-curdling thrills than any theater could show this special Unrated Director s Cut unleashes the ultimate vision of George A. Romero s latest living-dead shock-fest! Starring Simon Baker Dennis Hopper and John Leguizamo Land of the Dead finds humanity s last remnants battling to survive the unspeakable truth: The ravenous zombie hordes besieging their fortified city are evolving!』
『Bolstered by the success of28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, theResident Evilmovies and the hit remake of his ownDawn of the Dead, George A. Romero returns to the horror subgenre he invented withLand of the Dead. The fourth installment in Romero's zombie cycle (and the first since 1985'sDay of the Dead) presents a logical progression of events since 1968's horror classicNight of the Living Dead: Zombies(also known as "stenches" for their rotting odor) are the dominant population, and they've begun to show signs of undead intelligence and gathering power. The wealthiest survivors live comfortably in a luxury high-rise within a barricaded safe zone, ignoring the horrors of the outside world while armed scavengers stage raids in the zombie-zone to gather much-needed food and supplies. Simon Baker and John Leguizamo play mercenaries-for-hire; Dennis Hopper is their nefarious boss; and horror favorite Asia Argento (daughter ofSuspiriadirector Dario Argento) plays a former hooker recruited into Baker's scavenger squad. While none of this seems particularly fresh or inspired,Land of the Deadbenefits from hints of the social satire that made Romero's earlier zombie films so memorable. Not so much funny as gruesomely peculiar, Romero's plot isn't as inventive as it could've been, but as a big-scale B-movie,Land of the Deaddelivers a handful of shocks and horror-celebrity cameos (including gore-masters Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero) that should keep horror buffs happy until the next zombie opus comes along.--Jeff Shannon

(less than impressive)
『having seen the genius of ravi shankar unleashed upon a spell ridden crowd, (see Monterey pop, and others), the ensuing energy released causes an instant sense of unity, and a feeling of having witnessed/participated in something altogether extraordinary. I once saw him recieve a standing ovation after spending six or seven minutes tuning his instrument. he seems to have abandoned his focus on this outing. at one point he actually seems to be briefly running sitar blues riffs...eh???』

(highly recommended)
『this is a great dvd . the overall performance is outstanding . if you like east indian music i highly recommend . the sound recording is extra good also . there are 2 long ragas performed . the first around 35 minutes . the 2nd around 50 minutes . the 50 minute raga is extra cool because , as ravi explains, the raga is set up to improvise a little more than usual and introduce "new" ragas within . the tabla player has an amazing solo towards the end of the 2nd raga . ravi of course is simply put, a true master . the sarod player has a nice complementary voice to shankar . he plays allot of counter rhythms to the tabla during solos which contrasts ravi well . 2 tamboura players accompany for added drones. also a great bonus interview and comments with explanations of indian music by ravi and other musicians and people .』

(Best coffee candy I've ever had, bar none.)
『I don't even like candy that much, but these are so creamy and balanced, I get tempted to binge as well. They have the great flavor of strong, rich coffee and enough sweetness to remind me of Vietnamese coffee, a Frappuccino, or really good coffee ice cream.

If you like the flavor of good coffee, you'll be happy you tried them.』

(coffee candy)
『I was very happy to find the candy that is given out in a local Chinese restaurant around here. It cannot be bought locally. There was a lot of candy in each bag and it was well worth the cost.』

(An Addict's Dream)
『For a start, I am a raging coffee addict, so there will be no surprises in this review. Kopiko coffee candy is simply a divine combination of a coffee lover's relationship with the world's greatest drink and sugar.

The candy is reasonably sweet, though not to the degree that one misses the coffee taste, as in some coffee candies. These have the taste of a reasonably strong, but sweet, cup of coffee. They are perfect if you like sweets and like coffee.

There is only one disadvantage: packaging. With each candy in its individudal little bag, the efficiency of having a serious binge session with them is limited to some degree. The time taken to get into the said bags reduces the number you can suck on, chew, crunch up or swallow whole in a set amount of time. Swallowing whole is not recommended.

These would have to be the perfect companion to a good book. They taste great!』

(Popular with students!)
『One of my middle school students gave me a bag of these in the cappucino flavor, which I added to my candy jar. They were gone after a couple classes, and the kids LOVED them (I was a little surprised!) I still get requests for when I am going to have the "cappucino candies" again!』

(Six Stars...)
『"A brilliant study rich with humanity and cultural insights, this book will change the way readers think about human history-and about themselves. It is one of the most fascinating and provocative works in social history and political theory I, for one, have ever read."-Robert W. Hefner, Boston University

That is saying something! And I would like to second this motion.

If it were possible to give this book a six star rating I would certainly do so.

(Barbarians, primitives -- or neither?)
『An excellent examination of the decisions and histories made by "non-state peoples": those who choose (and Scott emphasises the choice implicit in their location) to live outside the sedentary agricultural states of Southeast Asia. While Scott understandably concentrates in the area of his main expertise, every note he strikes about how supposedly aboriginal hill tribes are frequently the stratified remnants of groups seeking to invade the enslavery of large nearby plain states will ring true for dozens of other examples around the world: from the maroon ex-slave colonies of the New World, to the Celtic fringe and Basque cultures of Europe. Fascinating, plainly written, with a great index and footnotes for those who wish to explore more.』

For two thousand years the disparate groups that now reside in Zomia (a mountainous region the size of Europe that consists of portions of seven Asian countries) have fled the projects of the organized state societies that surround them—slavery, conscription, taxes, corvée labor, epidemics, and warfare. This book, essentially an “anarchist history,” is the first-ever examination of the huge literature on state-making whose author evaluates why people would deliberately and reactively remain stateless. Among the strategies employed by the people of Zomia to remain stateless are physical dispersion in rugged terrain; agricultural practices that enhance mobility; pliable ethnic identities; devotion to prophetic, millenarian leaders; and maintenance of a largely oral culture that allows them to reinvent their histories and genealogies as they move between and around states.

In accessible language, James Scott, recognized worldwide as an eminent authority in Southeast Asian, peasant, and agrarian studies, tells the story of the peoples of Zomia and their unlikely odyssey in search of self-determination. He redefines our views on Asian politics, history, demographics, and even our fundamental ideas about what constitutes civilization, and challenges us with a radically different approach to history that presents events from the perspective of stateless peoples and redefines state-making as a form of“internal colonialism.” This new perspective requires a radical reevaluation of the civilizational narratives of the lowland states. Scott’s work on Zomia represents a new way to think of area studies that will be applicable to other runaway, fugitive, and marooned communities, be they Gypsies, Cossacks, tribes fleeing slave raiders, Marsh Arabs, or San-Bushmen.

(The Snakehead)
『In trying to think up one word to describe Patrick Radden Keefe's The Snakehead the only word that comes to mind is epic. Begining with the wreck of the smuggling ship the Golden Venture, Keefe works his way backward charting the rise of Cheng Chui Ping, a woman who immigrated to America in the eighties and with her husband Cheung Yik Tak set up a human smuggling ring transporting people from the Fujian province of China to America for a fee. She earned so much money from her endeavors that she able to set up her own money wiring service. Theres more to it than that involving killers, with innocents and a myriad of law enforcement officials who were working against each other due to country borders and customs. Theres a lot of issues raised with topics ranging from human rights violations in China (specifically the one child only policy that had a lot of people fleeing rural villages to avoid sterilization) to the rights of undocumented aliens living in America and their attempts at clemency. Personally like every good nonfiction novel the best thing Keefe does is present his work without over embellishing things with his viewpoint. Every thing is presented in a gray with suppositions made upon deals that got murderers lenient sentences from American courts to the exploits of an American INS agent who worked to bring Ping to justice, embellishing stories He told and eventually being caught in Hong Kong with Honduran passports, a criminal in the system He had once enforced.
In the end the book is a good nonfictional crime novel that studies not just the crime element but the lives of people affected, focusing as well on the story of the immigrants from the Golden Venture who survived the long arduous journey only to end up in sort of flux gaining support of townspeople and lawyers who were horrified at the treatment they were recieving from the American justice system which wanted to process them quickly. Its all interesting material well worth reading.』

(Eerily beautiful brutal story about a little-known astounding smuggler.)
『If you had told me that the one of the most prominent figures in human smuggling was a little Chinese lady, I'd not have believed you. Snake Head (the name comes from the title given to people who serve that function, as traders and smugglers of men), is about such a woman. Sister Ping, as she's known, who filled large barges full of human cargo and smuggled them into the US. It's a fascinating and tragic tale, amazement coming at the sheer scope of her operations and efficiency, and sadness at what the people she trades have gone through. This book is an excellent commentary on immigration laws and purpose, as well as an intriguing side into american Chinese culture. If you are a huge fan of "lost history" vignettes, this is a must-have. Highly recommended.』

(A page turner)
『The story is captivating - it's a page turner, which isn't always easy with ambitious non-fiction. I found it's not the best book to curl up with if you want to go to sleep, but it's a great book to get to sucked into. The subject - human smuggling - is a fascinating one. I read the book knowing very little about the subject. The book provides a memorable education. Immigration is a complex, charged topic, and you get the sense he comes to the topic with an open mind. Ultiamtely, he has his opinions, and he makes them explicit in the epilogue, but he lets the story tell itself. But the main appeal is the author's distinctive voice. It's hard to describe fully. All of the cliches about good writing come to mind - as transparent as a pane of glass, as comfortable as a friend telling you a story, as authoritative as a judge (while still being self-aware enough to know the limits of his knowledge). He's a hell of a writer.』

(The Chinatown Underworld Unmasked)
『This book must have been a labor of love. The story of the Sister Ping and the Chinese Mafia is laid out in a manner never equalled and as a reader you feel like you are journeying with the author as he makes his discoveries. The immigration neutral tone of the book helps the reader understand the problem as it is, not as we might want it to be. Incredibly well-researched, dramatically written, one of the best things I've ever read about the Chinese mob and/or Chinatown. I interviewed one of the agents that worked on the Golden Venture case years ago and always thought someone brilliant and dedicated could make a great story out of it all. Well, this author has succeeded.』

(The Snakehead)
『This is not the sort of story that gets a lot of press as the subject is always at the bottom of a debate. The issues are very well presented and brings up the age old debate as to wether we should revere the likes of Sister Ping or revile her.As long as there are people who want to come into the USA then there will be people who will enable them to in this case sister Ping. Was she doing this out of the goodness of her heart or was she doing it all for money. The good thing about this was that the author leaves the decision up to you. The book although fairly long keeps your attention the whole way through. I found it very illuminating and hope that other people will to. Why should we tolerate other ethnicities coming into this country but not the Chinese. It makes you think and as with most things in life it is not a matter of black and white as we would like it to be. A very worthwhile read.』
Book Description
A mesmerizing narrative about the rise and fall of an unlikely international crime boss.

In the 1980s, a wave of Chinese from Fujian province began arriving in America. Like other immigrant groups before them, they showed up with little money but with an intense work ethic and an unshakeable belief in the promise of the United States. Many of them lived in a world outside the law, working in a shadow economy overseen by the ruthless gangs that ruled the narrow streets of New York’s Chinatown.

The figure who came to dominate this Chinese underworld was a middle-aged grandmother known as Sister Ping. Her path to the American dream began with an unusual business run out of a tiny noodle store on Hester Street. From her perch above the shop, Sister Ping ran a full-service underground bank for illegal Chinese immigrants. But her real business—a business that earned an estimated $40 million—was smuggling people.

As a“snakehead,” she built a complex—and often vicious—global conglomerate, relying heavily on familial ties, and employing one of Chinatown's most violent gangs to protect her power and profits. Like an underworld CEO, Sister Ping created an intricate smuggling network that stretched from Fujian Province to Hong Kong to Burma to Thailand to Kenya to Guatemala to Mexico. Her ingenuity and drive were awe-inspiring both to the Chinatown community—where she was revered as a homegrown Don Corleone—and to the law enforcement officials who could never quite catch her.

Indeed, Sister Ping’s empire only came to light in 1993 when the Golden Venture, a ship loaded with 300 undocumented immigrants, ran aground off a Queens beach. It took New York’s fabled “Jade Squad” and the FBI nearly ten years to untangle the criminal network and hone in on its unusual mastermind.

The Snakeheadis a panoramic tale of international intrigue and a dramatic portrait of the underground economy in which America’s twelve million illegal immigrants live. Based on hundreds of interviews, Patrick Radden Keefe’s sweeping narrative tells the story not only of Sister Ping, but of the gangland gunslingers who worked for her, the immigration and law enforcement officials who pursued her, and the generation of penniless immigrants who risked death and braved a 17,000 mile odyssey so that they could realize their own version of the American dream. The Snakeheadoffers an intimate tour of life on the mean streets of Chinatown, a vivid blueprint of organized crime in an age of globalization and a masterful exploration of the ways in which illegal immigration affects us all.

A Q&A with Patrick Radden Keefe

Question:Can you tell us a little bit about Sister Ping? She is one of the most unusual "godmothers" in the annals of modern crime.

Answer:Sure. I first found out about Sister Ping in 2006, when she was on trial in New York. It emerged that she was a Chinese woman who had come to the United States in 1981 with no education, didn’t speak English, and started smuggling other people—from her home village and then the region in China that she came from—to the U.S. She did this for the better part of two decades, and made $40 million or so in the process, and then went on the lam. She was the FBI’s most wanted Asian organized crime figure for another five or six years before they finally tracked her down in Hong Kong, extradited her to the U.S., and tried her.

Q:If you passed her in the street, or went by her place of work, if you were wandering around Chinatown as a tourist, would you have any idea about what she did?

A:You wouldn’t give her a second look. This was a part of what was so fascinating about her; she made an enormous fortune but she made a point of being very humble in her appearance. She worked incredibly long hours, and there was nothing ostentatious about the way she carried herself. And I actually thinkthat this studied anonymity was part of what allowed her to do what she did with impunity for so long. And it also secured her a huge amount of respect within the Chinatown neighborhood, where she was regarded as kind of a humble, hometown heroine who hadn’t let the success she’d had go to her head.

Q:Sister Ping was clever enough to distance herself from the more violent aspects of human trafficking. How did she outsource the seedier aspects of what she was doing, and how did that ultimately affect her?

A:Well, this in some ways was what brought about her downfall, in that she was always a perfectionist, and when she started out as a smuggler in the early 1980s she would transport people herself. By that I mean, she would be there in Hong Kong when she put them on a plane; they would be flown to Guatemala, she would be there in Guatemala when they arrived. They would be escorted up through Mexico; she would meet them in California, then she would fly back with them to New York City. But as her operation grew, and the word spread—really, around the world—that this was a woman who could move anyone from point A to point B, it got so large that she could no longer oversee everything herself, and she had to start subcontracting. And this, in some ways, was her great mistake, because she subcontracted to a very violent gang of youths in Chinatown known as the Fuk Ching gang, and the gang, ultimately—because they were less scrupulous than she was about issues of safety and things like that—ended up mismanaging things. There were a number of these journeys that ended in death, and then a number of murders as well.

Q:Tell us what the titleThe Snakeheadmeans.

A:The snakehead is the name, the Chinese name, to refer to these human smugglers, who basically emerged in China in the 1960s and 1970s, helping smuggle people out of China. But then in the late 1980s and early 1990s—basically after Tiananmen Square—it became a massive (many say four- to six-billion-dollar-a-year) industry. These were the snakeheads, and among the snakeheads Sister Ping was the most prolific and certainly the most famous.

In the case of The Golden Venture, they would bring these ships to the U.S., and they wouldn’t want to bring them right to the shore in California or Massachusetts or New York—as you can imagine, it would look a little strange to have a freighter coming up, to appear in Brooklyn and drop off hundreds of Chinese people. So they would bring them to about a hundred miles off shore, out in the open ocean, and then they would send out small fishing boats which would offload the ships. This was called offloading and it was actually a kind of niche in the industry. And the gangsters were the ones who occupied this niche. They would take these fishing boats out and bring the passengers back in. Because Sister Ping had outsourced offloading to one of these gangs, the gang happened to have a lot of inner turmoil in the early part of 1993, precisely because they were making so much money in the snakehead business and they didn’t know how to divide it, and so there was a massive shoot-out just weeks before The Golden Venture arrived, and the guys who were supposed to go and offload the ship were all killed in the shootout. All of the guys who had gone to kill them were hoping they could be the ones to go and offload it and collect the money from the passengers, but they were all locked up and put in prison. So when the ship arrived, there was nobody to offload it, and that was why it came in—all the way in, to the Rockaways, in Queens, and actually ran aground right there on the beach in the media capital of the world.

Q:Of course, the real payoff for the reader is this reading experience—this is an amazing crime story with incredible twists and turns.

A:Yeah; it’s funny, I really didn’t anticipate this to be the case when I began the research. As I started digging in and talking to law enforcement sources and finding out about these various underworld figures, in Chinatown but also in places like Bangkok, I began to realize the relationships between them. One of the things that’s interesting in the book is that you realize that a whole series of people were actually cooperating with American authorities at different times over the years, that we’d never really known about. And in many cases, they were going to American authoritiesand giving them information about one another. There was an interesting, almost spy-versus-spy game going on between these ruthless, but also very enterprising and business-minded, underworld figures.

(Learning Organization)
『The author review military doctrine in dealing with local insurgencies. He compares the British experience in Malaysia and the American experience in Viet Nam. The focus on the book is in describing a "learning organization." This is one that adapts and learns; that evolves to meet new challenges. While this applies in combat, it also has value in all organizations that deal with challenges.

This is an excellent companion book to the new U.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual

(Important lessons for today)
『Colonel Nagl has written one of the best books on recent military history I have yet to read. He examines the past experiences in Vietnam and Malaya, pointing out what the failures and success of those experiences and translates them into an astounding piece of history for the present and the future. It is a blueprint for what to do and what not to do, given the current and quite likely future of warfare. It is a telling book by a combat leader. He writes with exceptional clarity and he work is replete with references and the bibliography is extraordinary. Everyone should read this book. In addition he is also the author of the Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgeny Field Manual, another excellent and detailed book on COIN operations.』

(Refreshingly introspective and honest)
『As a military history buff I feel like I have a good understanding of the dynamics of the Vietnam War and the reasons for the outcome from the perspective of the United States. However, Colonel Nagl puts the whole issue in a much more focused perspective than anything else I have ever read. (A quick note: Although the book addresses the British experience in Malaya and the US experience in Vietnam, the clear objective is to better understand Vietnam by comparing and contrasting it to Malaya. Hence, my focus here on Vietnam). By taking a methodical, academic approach, this book sets forth very specific criteria by which to measure the performance of the British and US militaries, delivering a well thought out and rational discussion of what must be done to counter an insurgency and how Britain and the US fared in their respective conflicts. More than that, it explains why the outcomes of Malaya and Vietnam were so different, not just from a tactical or strategic perspective, but also in terms of the overall structure and philosophy of the British and US armies. Much has been written about why the US failed to achieve its objectives in Vietnam, but I found this book to be far more thorough and insightful - and therefore more credible - than anything else out there.

On another note, it is extremely refreshing and encouraging to see this level of introspection and intellectual rigor from an Army officer, something I have noticed more and more in today's Army. To lead the US military into the future and prepare its personnel for the conflicts of today and tomorrow, this is precisely the kind of thoughtful self-examination and open inquisitiveness that officers will need to demonstrate.』

(Is the U. S. Army a learning institution ?)
『This was required reading for a graduate course in the history of American military affairs. The purpose of John A. Nagl's book was to explore the reasons why the British army was able to change its strategy and tactics of war fighting in order to successfully conduct a counterinsurgency operation in Malaya from 1948 through 1960, and why the U. S. army failed in its counterinsurgency challenge in Vietnam from 1950 through 1973, because its leaders clung to their strategy and tactics of annihilation. Nagl's thesis, for which he cogently argued in his book, was that the answer lied in the "organizational culture" differences between the British and U. S. armies. "The organizational culture of the British army allowed it to learn how to conduct a counterinsurgency campaign during the Malayan Emergency, whereas the organizational culture of the U.S. Army prevented a similar organizational learning process during and after the Vietnam War" (213).

As Nagl so aptly pointed out, the British army was structured on a regimental system whereby soldiers and officers served together for their whole careers, which gave them several advantages to learn and improve their war fighting skills. Units could quickly change their tactics and training methods as they found the counterinsurgency techniques that brought them mission success in the field. The British also learned from over one hundred years of colonial rule around the globe, that it was prudent to cultivate the trust and listen to the local populace. Since the British army was small, its senior leadership was in closer contact with the military operations in Malaya and more readily willing to listen to their junior officers' advice. In sharp contrast, Nagl argued that the institutional culture of the U.S. Army was too intransigent to change its learning cycle. "An army that saw its raison d'etre as winning wars through the application of firepower and maneuver to annihilate enemy forces simply could not conceive of another kind of war in which its weapons, technology, and organization not only could not destroy the enemy, but usually could not even find or identify him" (198).

No doubt, Nagl was correct in implying that had the U.S. commanders listened to the advice of those who called for using counterinsurgency tactics in Vietnam, they may have faired better. However, it is important to note that the British failed in conducting a successful counterinsurgency in Palestine, mainly because they could not win the trust of the Jews to help them since virtually the entire Jewish population were united in their quest for independence. Similarly, the North Vietnamese Communists under the inspired leadership of Ho Chi Minh, commanded the respect and support of probably more of the Vietnamese populace than the U.S. or the intolerably corrupt government of the South Vietnamese could ever hope to win over. Thus, another lesson for governments to learn is to carefully pick and choose when and where to militarily intervene.

Recommended reading for anyone interested in American history and military history.

Invariably, armies are accused of preparing to fight the previous war. InLearning to Eat Soup with a Knife, Lieutenant Colonel John A. Nagl—a veteran of both Operation Desert Storm and the current conflict in Iraq—considers the now-crucial question of how armies adapt to changing circumstances during the course of conflicts for which they are initially unprepared. Through the use of archival sources and interviews with participants in both engagements, Nagl compares the development of counterinsurgency doctrine and practice in the Malayan Emergency from 1948 to 1960 with what developed in the Vietnam War from 1950 to 1975.

In examining these two events, Nagl—the subject of a recentNew York Times Magazinecover story by Peter Maass—argues that organizational culture is key to the ability to learn from unanticipated conditions, a variable which explains why the British army successfully conducted counterinsurgency in Malaya but why the American army failed to do so in Vietnam, treating the war instead as a conventional conflict. Nagl concludes that the British army, because of its role as a colonial police force and the organizational characteristics created by its history and national culture, was better able to quickly learn and apply the lessons of counterinsurgency during the course of the Malayan Emergency.

With a new preface reflecting on the author's combat experience in Iraq,Learning to Eat Soup with a Knifeis a timely examination of the lessons of previous counterinsurgency campaigns that will be hailed by both military leaders and interested civilians.

(LOVE MY SKILLET!!)
『I GO THROUGH AN ELECTRIC SKILLET A YEAR!! USE THEM A LOT. WANTED ONE MORE USER FRIENDLY, NOT SO GIAGANTIC THAT IT WAS LONG AND TOO BIG HANDLES, SO CHOSE THIS ONE - PERFECT!!!! LOVE THE DOMED LID, AND VERY FUNCTUAL FOR ME!!!』

(Great skillet)
『This electric skillet is fantastic. The non-stick interior and exterior is very high quality, the temperature is more even than any electric skillet I've ever used, and the larger size is extremely useful. I highly recommend this skillet to everyone!』

(Good replacement for my old Presto)
『Got this to replace my worn out model. I like to cook lots of big stir fries, and this does the job. The old one lasted nearly 15 years, so I hope the new one will. I did notice however that the handles are not so sturdy, and they were a bit difficult to assemble. I had to find an alternative screw (one of the four provided did not fit) for attaching the legs. It cooks wonderfully ...but the temps on the dial seem miscalibrated (200 sizzles more like 400). I cook by "nose" rather than strictly by temperature, so that was not so big an issue. This is a hard to find size, and that feature was the deciding one for me.』

(Great Product Lousy Retailer)
『This is our second skillet like this. The first lasted for years before the finish started coming off of the interior so we decided to buy another just like it. The skillet cooks evenly and the heat is easy to control. We purchased through Amazon and J&R Music was the retailer who actually got the order. J&R ships items in the original manufacturers box wrapped only in plastic for protection. The first unit was damaged during shipment and that is when the nightmare began. It was supposed to have been a Christmas gift for my wife and I made that clear when I reported the damage back in early December. They drug their feet making promises of second day delivery and better packaging on the replacement. Bottom line we didn't receive the replacement until December 29th. It wasn't shipped second day as promised, it didn't make it in time for Christmas as promised and once again the box arrived damaged because they only wrapped it in plastic again. Buy the skillet but avoid J&R. Those people just don't get it!』

(Excellent electric skillet)
『I have had several other brands for the past years -- this one is by far the best. Great size - deep enough and extra wide. I am very pleased and glad I switched brands.』
『16-inch Electric Skillet accommodates french toast, pancakes, extra large cuts of beef, pork and poultry with its generous base and high dome cover. It also fries, grills, roasts, stews and cooks casseroles. 1-year limited warranty』
