(bad quality - coating is damaged. bad assistance. no refund.)
『Coating is damaged. After hardly a few uses coating is in your food!!
I've send it to Presto, Then I've waited for about 6 month to get my replacement, and guess what? After a week replaced skillet coating is damaged too. And you pay your shipping and it costs more to send it back.
It's junkie skillet. no use at all.
dissapoited.』

(Poached Salmon for Two)
『We had an electric skillet from our wedding 55 years ago. It finally gave up the ghost. We bought the Presto 06620 11 Inch Electric Skillet from Amazon. It was a perfect size for two people.. We poach 2 pieces(about 1/2 pound each) Wild Atlantic Salmon in spiced apple cider with cinnamon, slightly salted, allspice, cloves, lemon juice and zest, brown sugar. Setting the control on medium low, cover off, and poach each side five minutes, doing the skin side down first and stripping the skin and dark grey fat off the flesh, after the first turning; finally another five minutes on the stripped side again, which helps rid the fat taste. Check for completion by slitting the thickest area and looking for wet pink or silvery color(not cooked). Turn again, adding another five minutes if not done. Place on dinner plate with thin sliced lemon crossections on top, add a small amount of the liquid for taste. The Presto skillet keeps an even temperature and is easy to clean with its nonstick coating.』

(Cooks almost everything, saves space)
『How did I get along without this pan? I cook a lot of one-person meals, and this pan is great for that purpose. But, it holds a lot more than I would have guessed from seeing the picture. You can cook main dishes for several people, and side dishes for a larger group because of the depth of the pan. I am a vegetarian, cooking mostly Asian food, and it works for stir-frying, braising, steaming and just about any other method you can think of. The only things I would use my conventional stove for now is boiling big batches of noodles or pasta. This elctric skillet and my rice cooker can handle everything else, and they take up very little counter space. Easy and quick to clean. Most of the time, I can clean it with a damp paper towel and a bit of detergent, don't even need dishwasher:).

My only dislike is that the lid is plastic and maybe could break someday, but otherwise this is the perfect pan!』

(Great skillet)
『This is an excellent product. The surface heats up very quickly and the lid is great for steaming. So you can use it for any type of cooking - stir frying or steaming. The adjustable temperature control works well and the entire unit is easy enough to carry although not very small. It is the right size for cooking a dish for 4-6 people. The surface quality is the best, withstands rough scratches when using metal ladles. The best part is how quickly the surface gets heated up. It is a great appliance when traveling and when your hotel room does not have a kitchenette - just this skillet will do!』

(Presto quality!)
『bought to replace a competing brands fry pan that couldnt keep a accurate temperature. previously had another presto this was just as the old one, Great! Only downside is that it is no longer made in USA, made in china, would pay more for made in america』
『Family-sized skillet. EverNu cover won't dent. Heavy cast aluminum base. Base is coated inside and out with a non-stick finish. Skillet is immersible and dishwasher safe This item will take 2-3 weeks to ship. Shipments cannot be expedited on this item. .』

(Wish I could give it 0 stars)
『Most expensive, worthless piece of junk I've ever bought. This fryer gets great reviews, but it has a fatal flaw - the safety mechanism on it is a little ticklish, and keeps shutting down the power to the fryer frequently. The result is disgusting fried food, since there is no way to maintain any consistent temperature. I wish I had bought something reliable like a fry-daddy that will just stay on while I'm frying. The draining mechanism is nice, but that's little consolation when the food tastes terrible.』

(Great till it dies 3 of 4 in dumpster)
『I had a DeLonghi fryer with a rotating basket. Loved it. Electronics died and I couldn't find the same unit so I purchased a D14427DZ (same unit with digital temp control). Electronics died. Got another. Same fate. Got this unit. Thought great, the digital temp was replaced with analog. Problem solved. Wrong!!! It died too. On number 4 of this model. I have had other DeLonghi products and been happy, but 3 of 4 of this model died, and 1 other model died. If it would not die it would be a great product; however, not worth the agrivation. Hard to salvage a pot of warm fat laden fry's!!!!』

(Great for a year....)
『This deep fryer was terrific - for a year. I loved the way it cooked plus cleanup was a cinch. But then it just stopped heating and nothing I did (including pushing the reset button) could get it working again. I've never been crazy about the way the plug inserts in the back of the fryer - for safety, I suppose, it's magnetic and didn't ever seem to be fully connected the way I would have liked. But that wasn't the problem with heating either. I called Customer Service and they told me the only thing I could do was take it to the nearest service center - which is over 100 miles away. I'm buying a different brand for a lot less money. If I knew it was only going to last a year, I never would have invested $100 in it!』

(Good fryer)
『The best things about this are
1) Gets very hot and stays hot
2) Simplicity and ease of use (cleaning could not be easier with hose to drain oil and all parts except heating element dishwasher safe and removable) - this is probably the biggest plus
3) Extra large capacity is awesome especially if you are frying for a family, etc.

Considerations:
1) I definitely appreciate the simplicity but it takes some getting used to (especially if you are going from a smaller more insulated model). The lid is very thin and outer housing is just metal so when the oil is hot - EVERYTHING is hot... which is fine considering that this is also what makes it so practical and easy to clean - you just have to be careful.
2) I really wish the handle could fold down while frying (small gripe but it annoys me a little)
3) The cord in the back seems weird to attach and while it has never fallen off, can't help but feel like it could at any time!

Overall - yes would definitely recommend. It fries great, cleans up great. It should hold up for a long time too.』

(Deep fryer)
『I give this fryer a 4. it works well. takes about 15 minutes to come up to full temp. basket is large for large quantity frying. the outside stainless makes for easy cleanup. now the drawbacks. the power cord does fall off easily if you move the fryer but I understand it was designed that way for safety. next the lid comes completely off. you have to be careful where you place the hot lid. I wish it were attached. finally, the handle of the fry basket has to stay extended when there is oil in the fryer, this makes cold storage difficult. still overall I gave it a 4 star.』
『The DeLonghi Dual Zone Deep Fryer has an extra large 3-LB. (4-LITER) food capacity. Ample space allows food to fry evenly and completely, for delicious results every time. Its generous capacity makes the Dual Zone deep fryer perfect for meals and families of all sizes. Dual Zone Technology- The cool zone located beneath the heating element, prevents food from burning. This unique technology reduces odor and keeps oil clean, for tasty fried food every time. The adjustable thermostat with Indicator light, lets you easily set the temperature, giving you the flexibility to fry foods just the way you like them. Removable parts Make cleanup quick and effortless. The bowl, frying basket and lid are all dishwasher-safe. A permanent mesh filter is located inside the stainless steel lid, the permanent filter prevents the release of oil vapors and odors into your kitchen. The viewing window allows you to safely and easily view the entire frying process. A removable heating element allows for quick and easy cleanup, and it's in direct contact with the food for fast and crispy results. Cool Touch removable handle lets you lift or lower the frying basket for safe operation.』

(Disappointing)
『The music on this CD is pretty, but bland. I am sorry I bought it.』

(So Good You Could Drink It)
『At first i had doubts when i bought this cd, thinking it was going to be a little over the top. I was suprised to find out that I was wrong. All the songs are so light and dainty and beautifully composed. I especially liked Sanjay Mishra's "For Julia" and Ancient Future's "The Empress", but I absolutely loved Lei Quang's "Picking Flowers". This is by far one of my favorite Putumayo albums. I even like it better than Music From The Coffee Lands!』

(Journey Across the Asian Continent)
『Billed as a journey across the "Tea Lands", this CD gives an incredible survey of the musical styles of Asia. Asia is a vast and diverse continent, from the frozen steppes of the north to the tropical jungles of India and SE Asia. Some of the oldest civilizations arose there, along the Indus River (in Paksitan) and the Yellow River valley (in China). The religions of Hinudism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Shinto arose in Asia, and Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim countrie. The world's two largest countries, India and China, are both in Asia. The result? You have an incredible variety of languages, cultures and people, all with their own styles of music. Any CD managing to cover even a little of that diversity is amazing, but this CD manages to do just that.

So just whats on this CD, you might ask. Well, alot of good stuff, actually. From the tiny semi-autonomous republic of Tatarstan, Zulya performs a haunting, melodic song. Pakistani singer Ghulam Ali sings a ghazal of love and devotion, while Iranian setar and tar player Kamil Alipour shows the wonder of classical Persian music in the mode Dastgah Afshari. Indonesian composer Ujang Suryana leads a Gamelan ensemble, Turkey's Okan Murat Ozturk demonstrates Anatolian folk music, and Oki revives the traditions of Japan's indigenous culture with Ainu pop, complete with the hankori, a native Ainu instrument. Yes, thats right, Ainu pop! Chinese erhu-player Lei Qiang does a traditional song from Sichuan, while the group Ancient Future does a mellow techno number drawing upon Chinese, Japanese and Indian instrumentation.

This is good music, quite appropriate for listening to while drinking tea if your so inclined. In fact, the booklet includes a history of tea and it's cultural role, as well as a recipe for Indian chaai. The Putumayo label has put out a number of great world music CDs, and this should definately be included amongst them. Listening to this CD will shatter any stereotypes you may have about Asian music. It is certainly worth adding to your collection, and good music to listen to while drinking tea, meditating or just chilling out. Several of my friends have commented that they liked this CD as well, and were amazed at how diverse Asian music is. So do yourself a favor and check out this CD, along with some of the other compilations from Putumayo.』

(Putumayo's First Asian adventure)
『Putumayo's first venture into Asia with this CD is wonderful--a breathtaking exploration of Asian countries through music. While tea is the unifying theme, the music is as calm as a hot cup.

This is centered on instrumentals&they are musical nirvana.

Ancient Future has a great track fusing different styles of Asian music,as does Oki,who shows the ancient roots of Japan in the Ainu people.Oki Kano also collaborated with Carlos Nakai on "Island of Bows." Sanjay Mishra's "For Julia" is acoustic guitar meets India.Lei Qiang contributes a traditional Chinese instrumental, making one think of the Forbidden City,or the ancient temples.Okan Murat Ozturk from Turkey&Kamil Alipour from Iran evoke the serenity through their instrumental music. They show that lyrics aren't always necessary for powerfully soothing music.Zulya is an Enya from Tatarstan,at once New Agey&earthy. She collaborates with an African musician, uniting different musical traditions harmoniously.

This CD is ideal for meditative settings.』

(charming and calming)
『Very good belend of relaxing and fused music with traditional and some western sound intwined.』
『This pan-Asian travelogue features musicians from China, India, Tatarstan, Indonesia, Japan, Turkey, and Iran. Aside from the unifying theme of the 400-hundred-year-old tea trade, the tunes have little in common and range from modern fusions to intriguing glimpses of rarely heard traditions. Assorted strings dominate the instrumental forces, especially harplike sounds, but the vocals are equally strong. Among the most fascinating tracks are Zulya's beguiling recollections of her Tatar childhood, Oki's tribute to his endangered Ainu (Japanese aboriginal) heritage, the Anatolian Turkishsaz(lute) stylings of Okan Murat Ozturk, and an arrestingly percussive example of Iran's classical Persian disciplines as performed by Kamil Alipour. The set offers an array of unexpected pleasures from cultures that deserve to be better documented in the West. It is as mellow yet invigorating as the perfect tea break. A recipe forchai, a spicy Indian milk tea, is included.--Christina Roden

(Don't get this set - get the "Gold" 2-disc anthology instead!)
『This set has poor sound quality. There is a major drop out in the middle of Track 9 on Disc 1. I can't believe how that could be overlooked. The 2-Disc Gold collection is the exact number of songs in the exact order and the remastering is superb.』

(Outstanding)
『I've wanted to pick up Asia's early stuff on cd for a while. Glad I waited until this package. It's everything from the first 3 releases.

The remastering is superb and the songs, well you know, they're great.』

(Fond Memories)
『I used to really like Asia in the 80's and I recently rediscovered why I liked them in the first place.』

(Progessive Rock n' Pop At Its Finest)
『Great stuff, in the progressive rock n' pop sense...
John Wetton and Carl Palmer are personal favorites...
Wetton has one of the best voices in rock EVER...
"Ride Easy" was a B-sider, but i think it was one of Asia's best...
"Anthologia" sounds better each day, with all the garbage spewin'
over the airwaves today...』

(A True Guilty Pleasure)
『God knows why I like some of this crap. It's fairly awful arena-rock splooge, the kind that makes Boston look subtle. Four musicians from some of the greatest rock bands of the 70s trying to cash in on the 80s pop/rock circus. Trust me people, Wetton, Downes, Palmer, and Howe are far, far better players than this swill indicates, and they've played on far better material. Still, if you have a Spinal Tap-like love for silly-ass overblown rock, there's some fun poop on this collection. Hey, you get all their first three albums! Woo hoo! Only for masochists like me and 12-year olds (or people who never got past age 12) who actually take this crap seriously.』

BACK IN ACTION... DHOOM:2 reinvents the action comedy genre and propels it into the 21st century.

Ali's (Uday Chopra) dream of becoming a police officer has come true. He is now ACP Jai Dixit's (Abhishek Bachchan) 'right hand man'. Together, they are trying to keep a tight leash on the crime in India. Little do they know what they are going to be up against. Enter Aryan - Mr. A (Hrithik Roshan) - A hi-tech international thief. After pulling off a series of impossible heists all over the world, his next target is Mumbai, India. The case is given to ACP Jai and Ali.

Helping them put the pieces of the puzzle together is ACP Shonali Bose (Bipasha Basu), Jai's college mate, now a police officer in her own right. For the last two years Shonali has been tracking these amazing thefts and is now an expert on this thief, who no one has seen.

Once in Mumbai, Mr. A finds his match in Sunehri (Aishwarya Rai), a petty yet clever thief. She makes him an offer he finds very hard to refuse. A partnership! Aryan accepts. And so the game begins - a game of cat and mouse - a game of good v/s bad. The COPS - Jai, Shonali and Ali; and they are after Aryan and Sunehri - The ROBBERS . From the desert of Namibia to the backwaters of Goa, the mean streets of Mumbai and the ancient forts of Rajasthan, and finally to Wild n Exotic Rio, Brazil.

(A fun musical with silent relationships.)
『Wayward Cloud as I been reading is mostly described as slow film with way to much sex in it. Ok, but, the sex in this film is in no way sexual. If you're buying, renting or barrowing this movie do not watch it as a sexual film or as a piece art erotica. It's not Swimming Pool. It's a film exploring the separation of people through the digital age.

In the film, the main female character is not in anyway involved in pornography but has sexual interest in her old friend which happens to be a porn star. He though isn't able to express his sexual attraction to her because he has absolutely no interest in sex. Sex being his profession and not his pleasure. So he escapes into surreal fantasy of musical sequences. Which happen to be some of the funniest dance sequences I've ever seen.

That said the film is slow, poetic and completely captivating. I couldn't look away. I've seen this film now a few times, each time I've found myself captured by the silent relationship of the characters. This film is not for everyone, not at all. It's for the people interested in Art Films and if you're a person that doesn't scare because some one naked on screen then it wouldn't hurt. But this film is great. Its ability to capture and effect the viewer is more effective than any films coming out now. And it being an almost silent film helps it being a foreign film. Almost no subtitles.』

(Art)
『Viewers should take heed of the director Tsai Ming-liang's creed. He creates art and not movies, and this certainly isn't a movie in the way we think of movies. This movie does tell a story, sort of. But the movie really is a series of little-dialoged vignettes interspaced with musical numbers, that may or may not have anything to do with the story.

The story is about a man (a seemingly unenthusiastic porn actor) and a woman who meet and have an affair during drought stricken Taiwan. There is very little spoken dialog throughout. It's definitely not your regular movie which moves along through speech and actions of the actors. Instead, we are shown scenes. Tsai Ming-liang has won numerous awards at film festivals and is widely acclaimed, so who I am to say whether this movie is good or not. I can only say that it is my personal opinion that I thought the musical numbers were great, but the vignettes were very slow. And considering that about half the vignettes were sex scenes, that's saying something.』

(Clearly not for just anyone, including me!! Bizarre at best with too much sex.)
『I cannot describe this foreign art-house film, but I can say a few things. It is filled with blatant sex, graphic sex, boring sex, weird sex. The 2005 film is set in Taiwan where there is a water draught. Water bottles are everywhere, and includes watermelons, used as a sexual object. The film is satirical, but bizarre and one may not get all the satire or symbolism. Don't try to figure the plot, as there is none.

According to an interview in Asian cinema, Director Tsai Ming-liang said, "I am not interested in dialogue or telling a story. I'm not trying to put over a clear message. It is not important, what the film is trying to tell you - but what you feel about it. Think about, what you feel."

There is little dialogue here, and what I can gather is that a low budge porn star connects with a girlfriend. Some strange musical dance numbers are sprinkled into the film. These are coloful dance numbers, and some of the music is in the tune of 50's American popular hits. The lyrics to the musical numbers are present, but different from the American lyrics.

In conclusion, this has to go in my Listmania of Foreign Film Too Bizarre with way too much bizarre pornographic sex. The subtitles are clear and easy to read. Not for me, and many folks for that matter ....Rizzo

(Adult and Unusual)
『"The Wayward Cloud"

Adult and Unusual

Amos Lassen

"The Wayward Cloud" (Strand Releasing) is the new film from Taipei by director Tsai Ming-liang and it is causing a bit of controversy. The Taiwanese government spent two weeks deciding whether or not to censor it and they finally decided to let it play as it was made--uncensored and uncut. It is not porn but a critique of porn with the main idea of the film centering on alienation. The symbolic uses of a wayward cloud and drought represent "dryness" and "drifting" in society and further uses porn to represent how we, as people, do not connect with one another.
The film is somewhat grim but there are moments of lightness and it is a very interesting film visually.
The movie is set in a city that has no identity and in a society in which hardcore sex is the way of life. The action takes place in a very hot summer and everything is dry including the way people feel about each other. The two main characters were once friends and meet again after not having seen each other for a period. They slowly get close to one another and the warmth of their coming together is contrasted against the cold profession of the male who earns his living by being an actor in unemotional porn movies. Against this also are some really strange musical scenes and some very funny bits about crabs and watermelons. There is one hardcore sex scene which many may find offensive but it should not take away from the value of this excellent film.
"The Wayward Cloud" is a satirical view of longing and frustration and a solution to those problems. The movie includes cheesy 1960's homage to Chinese popular music and this gives a respite from the sex scenes that are used to make the restless state of wander that the characters seem lost in appear more sincere. "The Wayward Cloud" is a film that builds to a very satisfying climax and visually the film stuns the eyes. It, at times, however, tries the patience of the viewer but the images that are presented mesmerize.
One thing that is sure--you may never look at watermelons in the same way. However the insights into the human condition have a lot to say about loneliness and human isolation.

『This was a wonderful film all around. Excellent acting and great story. Another fantastic BWood Romance. Certainly a must see.』

(Quite enjoyable 4 star movie)
『This is a 'will she marry the guy the parents want and return to India or follow her heart' movie.
Akshay does a good job with the gentle romantic part. Katrina Kaif is very good as the sassy Indian cum London girl.
It also has some good songs -some worth downloading.
Even though it is set both in the UK and India it retains its full Bollywood flavour (unlike some of the less satisfactory attempts to blend the cultures). Enjoyable Bollywood fare.』

『The Indian population and community is present all thorough the world. And a substantial part of this resides in Britain; some of them who have been there ever since the times of the British Raj in India. However, the elder generations have not forgotten their identities and the place they believe that their roots are instilled inn. But much to their dismay, that is not the case with the younger Generation that has been born there and has been influenced by the surrounding that they have grown up inn. Our Story revolves around one such girl who has been born and brought up in the heart of London Jasmine alias Jazz cause thats the name that she goes by and prefers being called; has already been through hoardes of eligible suitors that have approached her through the recommendation of her father; and made sure that she has gotten rid of them in one way or another. The primary reason being that Jazz is not interested in being tied down by a typical Indian male but would rather be with a white man who she feels would be more in tune with her way of thinking and lifestyle. Thats why she has uncanny closeness for her boss namely Charlie brown, who has been through three divorce settlements already and is now looking for the fourth Mrs. Brown. Charlie brown too reciprocates the some feelings towards jazz.Released Year : 2007 Running Time : approx 132 mins. Color B/W : Color Language : Hindi SubTitles : English Subtitles』

(A Great Way to Get Unexcited About Your Trip to Japan)
『This Lonely Planet Guide is another copy of all the previous Japan guides with all the same disappointments.

Coverage of areas outside of Tokyo and Kyoto is honestly rather shoddy, and they've kept the obnoxious negativity that makes an exciting trip to Japan seem like a waste of time. While other Lonely Planet guides are lively, with authors that seem to enjoy the travelling, Lonely Planet Japan's authors write as though they really don't like Japan. It is questionable whether or not the writers even visited the cities they are reviewing.

This guide is probably most useful as a reference of places to look up on your own in another source.

(Very helpful)
『I bought this guide to Japan as I was going to be traveling around for about two months. The guide, although not indispensible, provided good information about cheap accommodation, perfect for my budget, and other measures to conserve my budget and things to do. Following suggestions from the guidebook I had some of my most favourable experiences in Japan, including going to a free outdoor hot spring, where there were no other people.

However, in many places the local tourist information offices are defenitely worth paying a visit, especially for maps, as the maps provided are not very clear nor detailed. I also found some of the places listed in the guide to have shut down.

The guide provides some useful background information about the culture of Japan, different types of foods to try out, and various etiquette notices on hot springs and other essential activities.

To conclude, the guide is a worthwhile buy, although in general it stays quite close to the tourist trail, and for the truly unique Japanese experiences off the beaten trail, very little is offered.』

(Don't waste your time/money/vacation)
『This book was only marginally useful.
- The maps were ambiguous at best, and completely wrong at worst (on multiple instances in multiple cities).
- Descriptions of sights were often wrong or misleading (don't bother with the "Pentax Forum" in tokyo. the address is wrong, and once you find it, it's completely lame (old cameras, and you can't even play with stuff, contrary to the book)
- Does NOT have the actual cheapest budget hostels in Kyoto or Tokyo.
- I didn't really like the writing style, but that's preference
- the eating establishments they suggest are completely random and often not the best/cheapest/or most interesting.

everyone i met traveling that had the rough guide was happy with it. in 20/20 hindsight i wish I had bought that book. everyone I met that had this book was equally disappointed.』

(japan lonely planet)
『very informative and detailed. a necessary asset for japan vacation planning. i've used other guidebooks along with lonely planet but this is the only book i packed along in my luggage to the japan trip. i wish they had an electronic version though since it is also the heaviest and biggest.』

(Not the Book You Need for Japan Travel)
『I've used Lonely Planet Guides for my many trips abroad but the Japan Travel Guide is by far the most confusing and contains very few maps, directions, and information. I spent the majority of my time asking locals how to get to a location because the Lonely Planet guide did not provide a map or even directions for that matter. In Japan you need a map and a good one at that. You will spend the majority of your time walking the city and taking trains and you need to have a grasp of the area. This book did not provide any of that and it made me question Lonely Planet's quality and substance.』
『Nobody knows Japan like Lonely Planet. With more maps and language content than any other guidebook, this 11th edition unveils the very best of shopping in Tokyo, skiing in the Japan Alps, soaking in idyllic onsen (hot springs), trekking to Kansai's feudal castles, slurping soba at Kyushu food stalls, and so much more.

Lonely Planet guides are written by experts who get to the heart of every destination they visit. This fully updated edition is packed with accurate, practical and honest advice, designed to give you the information you need to make the most of your trip.

In This Guide:

Architecture chapter leading you from ancient temples to modern towers
Reliable advice from resident and specialist authors - and locals!

(My niece loves this book!)
『I bought this book to read to my four year old niece. She wanted me to read it over and over. She said, "I like bibimbop!" and she had never even tried it. We made a list and went together to an Asian food store to buy the ingredients and made it for dinner. (Using the recipe from the book.) Everybody loved it!』

(Wonderful book! My son loves it!)
『The words are very catchy and the recipe in back is simple and delicious! Highly recommend this book!』

(Delightful story)
『This book is a favorite with our children. It has a catchy rhythm&rhyme throughout the book, and has enjoyable pictures throughout. The story depicts the making of Bee Bim Bop, a Korean dish.』

(Great story with rhythm and rhyme!)
『A wonderful book for preschoolers, with a rhythm and rhyming words, that goes through the steps for making a favorite food of Korea, Bee-bim-bop. My grandchildren love the book, and it even has a recipe so we can try bee-bim-bop ourselves. Pictures are bright and engaging.』

(a must have)
『A must have book for anyone who loves asian food. The book takes you through a sing song preparation of a korean dish called bi bim bap. My kids have never eaten bi bim bap but they both love this story and recite the words whenever we shop for food. "Gotta hurry, hurry, gotta shop, shop, shop...hungry, hungry, hungry, for some bi bim bop!" I chuckle everytime they say it.』
A wonderful paperback picture book about the joys of family and food, from Newbery Award winning author Linda Sue Park.

Bee-bim bop ("mix-mix rice") is a traditional Korean dish. In bouncy rhyming text, a hungry child tells of helping her mother make bee-bim bop: shopping, preparing ingredients, setting the table, and sitting down to enjoy a favorite meal. The enthusiasm of the narrartor is conveyed in the whimsical illustrations, which bring details from the artist’s childhood in Korea to his depiction of a modern Korean-American family. The book includes Linda Sue’s own bee-bim bop recipe!

(I knew women like this)
『I graduated from Barnard in 1981 and I knew women like this. A little too much money and a bit to little experience it seemed easier for the trust fund set to get themselves into serious trouble, than the rest of us. Still, there was something to envy in the idea that adventure is a birthright. This book is hard to read in parts, but the beginning is all possibility. It is a look into another life, both for the women involved and into another culture and finally how they clash.』

(China didn't really deserve this)
『There have been other books about traveling with a mental case -- Hemingway's "A Moveable Feast" is perhaps the most famous -- but few have been so relentlessly grim as "Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven."

The title, to get that out of the way, is catchy but has almost nothing to do with the book, which is the tale of two fresh Brown graduates who decide in 1986 to backpack around the world, starting with China, then only recently open to such gallivanting. I confess, I picked up the book because I wondered just how stupid two Ivy League girls could be. Plenty, as expected, but there are more layers in this book than I expected.

One in particular raises "Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven" out of the common ruck of travelogues. Not too often in travel literature (aside from the explicitly political) does the author face and confess to a moral dilemma. It happens here, and it turns the book into an experience worth contemplating, which otherwise it would not be.

If it hadn't been for that and for the crisis of madness that overtook Gilman's travel companion, called Claire, this would have been a tedious tale.

The two girls had vague notions of experiencing the rest of the world, but since they didn't speak Chinese, their experience of China was trivial. Mostly they interacted with other backpackers, portrayed as a shallow and giddy bunch of layabouts that you wouldn't bother to know back home.

This knocking about and being continually repulsed by the living standards of the Chinese could, and does, get old pretty quick, and combined with occasional passages of too-purple prose made reading "Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven" a chore for the first 150 pages. The confession that "each day . . . we grew more acutely aware of just how coddled we'd been all our lives and just how foolish we were" was no surprise. I could have guessed as much before opening the covers.

Things improve -- that is, they go downhill catastrophically for the participants -- thereafter.

With the perspective of nearly 25 years, Gilman has some thoughtful things to say about her experience and about the Chinese, to the extent she learned much about them. "Everything I'd known up to that point about China was basically, a gross cultural stereotype." By the end of the book, she comes away with a different stereotype, equally at odds with reality, or so it appears.

The Chinese put up with a lot. Whenever I walk the aisles of a garden store and see the ranks of ceramic or fiberglass garden gnomes from China, I wonder what the former peasants who have migrated to the dark, satanic mills of the Pearl River Valley or Shanghai imagine to be the cultural characteristics of people who need so many garden gnomes. The few Chinese who encountered Susan and Claire couldn't have been much enlightened in that respect.

(No Bowl of Flawless Delight Paradise Dog Soup)
『"Undress me in the Temple of Heaven", a travel memoir about two Brown grads in the People's Republic of China in the eighties, seems an obvious attempt to cash in on the success of travel memoir "Eat, Pray, Love", by Elizabeth Gilbert. Gilbert was such an original fruitcake that her first person, utterly self-absorbed memoir was a charming wander across the map. Unfortunately, Gilman's book is not the sexy, fun romp that the title seems to promise. Yes, she finally gets undressed, but the Temple of Heaven ain't what it used to be. This is a dated, sarcastic tale of an ill-advised trip to China with the usual self congratulatory, Liberal stereotypes: big boobed, ethnic, free love, New York liberal, versus the uptight, rich, thin, blond Republican. Guess who wins. The so called irreverence is that Gilman departs far enough from the party line to admit that Communist China is no bowl of Flawless Delight Paradise Dog soup. I found this book a strange, headache inducing journey, where the girls are always in excruciatingly unpleasant circumstances but manage to survive--no mean feat in the vicious, crude, Orwellian communist bureaucracy of the People's Republic. Gilman has a few honest moments about youth, but not enough and not nearly honest enough.』

(Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven)

I enjoyed Undress Me in The Temple of heaven -- I found it was a fascinating non-fiction book about China both in 1985 and recently!!

I have bought 3 copies and given two away -- so far everyone is enoying it immensely!!』

(Hindered by unlikable characters and the author's reading of the audio)
『Right after their Brown University graduation in 1986, author Susan Jane Gilman and her friend Claire Van Houten embark on an ambitious venture: backpacking around the world. Of course, after studying a placemat at the International House of Pancakes, they decide to begin in Communist China, only ten days after outsiders have been allowed to enter. Thus begins Gilman's memoir of the journey, Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven.

After deplaning in Hong Kong, Gilman gets a raging nosebleed, and only then do they realize they've packed everything but tissues -- including a year's supply of tampons, a Lonely Planet guide, and the complete works of Friedrich Nietzsche (a little light reading on the trail is always good). And that's only the beginning of a truly misguided attempt at life-expansion that takes them through most of China, though they have increasing difficulty with communication as they find their Mandarin phrasebook practically useless when faced with the many different regional dialects.

The strangeness only escalates when, once they're settled, with little social contact to speak of, Claire suddenly decides to repeatedly go off by herself, doing "business," making "contacts," etc. and making less and less sense all the time. What happens later acts as the climax of this globe-trotting story and illustrates the everpresent bureaucracy of a country under Communist rule.

Gilman does her best to tell only the more entertaining parts of the story -- oddly enough, the title references an event that didn't actually happen -- but it's hard to stay interested in a pair of women who are so blatantly despicable. Unlikable protagonists are not the way to go with a book intended for a wide audience, though Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven is still bound to be a huge hit with reading groups. The various people that Susan and Claire meet offer money, food, help, and advice, and yet are more often than not left without even a thank you.

Nevertheless, the seemingly unending procession of one obstacle after another makes it equally difficult to stop reading/listening. And while not exactly likable, both women display a certain guileless charm: a complete lack of worldliness that makes it easy to step into their shoes and wonder what you would do in the same situation (or give thanks that you aren't).

The audiobook of Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven (read by the author) includes an interview with Gilman on the last disc, where she brings the listener up to date with her life and contact with the characters. Perhaps the time spent confirming events and writing them down overexposed her to the text and characters, but she sounds rather bored by the whole venture.

One would think that having Gilman read her own book would add an extra layer to the experience, but it actually detracts somewhat and emphasizes the fact that she is trying to write above her ability. She mispronounces numerous words, including "Charybdis," "depravity," "normalcy," and the verb form of "frequent" while using questionable phrases like "gouged with graffiti," and these seeming mistakes continually took me out of the story. (The moral: one so proud of her alma mater to repeatedly brag about it in the text should choose words she has mastered.)』

Amazon Best of the Month, March 2009: While this latest memoir from Susan Jane Gilman (formerHypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress) appears to be a saucy account of international sexcapades, it quickly reveals its whip-smarts, sucking you into a story that brilliantly captures the "ecstatic terror" of gleefully leaping from your comfort zone--and finding yourself in freefall. It's 1986, and newly minted ivy league grads Susy and her friend Claire have never left the U.S. when (inspired by a "Pancakes of Many Nations" promotion during a drunken night at IHOP) they hatch a plan to circle the world, starting in China, which has just opened to tourists. From the moment of arrival, they're out of their depth, perpetually hungry, foolish, and paranoid from relentless observation. Claire, who carries the complete works of Nietzsche "like a Gideon Bible," seems more capable than Susy until encounters with military police, hallucinatory fevers, and a frantic escape from a squalid hospital expose cracks in her psyche that utterly derail their plans. Rich with insight, dead-on dialogue, and canny characterization, Gilman's personal tale nails that cataclysmic collision of idealism and reality that so often characterizes young adulthood. Be prepared to wolf down the final hundred pages in one sitting. --Mari Malcolm
『They were young, brilliant, and bold. They set out to conquer the world. But the world had other plans for them.

Bestselling author Susan Jane Gilman's new memoir is a hilarious and harrowing journey, a modern heart of darkness filled with Communist operatives, backpackers, and pancakes.

In 1986, fresh out of college, Gilman and her friend Claire yearned to do something daring and original that did not involve getting a job. Inspired by a place mat at the International House of Pancakes, they decided to embark on an ambitious trip around the globe, starting in the People's Republic ofChina. At that point,Chinahad been open to independent travelers for roughly ten minutes.

Armed only with the collected works of Nietzsche, an astrological love guide, and an arsenal of bravado, the two friends plunged into the dusty streets ofShanghai. Unsurprisingly, they quickly found themselves in over their heads. As they ventured off the map deep into Chinese territory, they were stripped of everything familiar and forced to confront their limitations amid culture shock and government surveillance. What began as a journey full of humor, eroticism, and enlightenment grew increasingly sinister-becoming a real-life international thriller that transformed them forever.

Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven is a flat-out page-turner, an astonishing true story of hubris and redemption told with Gilman's trademark compassion, lyricism, and wit.』
