『Great Coffe maker! Looks good on the counter, right up to the part where the water comenced leaking from the bottom. Uncontolable water. I called the company, they referred me to a company in Pensylvania. It would have cost me more to send the machine and fix than replace. I called back to the company. I was instructed to cut the cord send to the company. They sent me a new one. But with out the foamy milk maker. Down grade.
Less than three months later. This one leaks as well. Good luck people.』

(What a stupid design!!)
『This machine LOOKS nice, but its designers failed to realize that the hot water that flows through the coffee grounds should fall into the MIDDLE of the pile of grounds, not on the edge. I must stop the machine after about 40 seconds to stir the water and grounds to make sure they are all involved in making coffee. Duh! And on top of it all, it stopped working completely after only 4 months' use. And the espresso part, while producing decent results, is a royal pain to clean up. Spend your money elsewhere!!!』

(We fixed it Updated))
『I bought this product after reading the reviews with some trepidation but really wanted a combo coffee maker and this was in my price range. So with fingers crossed I bought it. It was an amazing product to begin with. Having never made my own expresso/cappucino's I had to practice with it since the instruction manual was written for someone who already knew what they were doing. This machine worked so well for us, the frother is amazing and i even used coffee bags and tea bags in the expresso side for capaTino's. Deep sigh of relief for six months then the water on the counter, not a lot of water, I notified the comapny and was told to send it to a repair center in Philly, on my dime but it was too expensive and i really dont have the time to find something to package and send it. a year later I was surprised there was any water left for coffee!
Walmart has better coffee makers and expresso machines and a heckuva lot cheaper. I would have thought an Italian company would get it right. Apparently not.

6.1.09 my husband took the machine apart and resealed everything (thank you!) even though the leak was still there it was nothing like it was. We then decided to not remove the bucket since that also caused a leak when put in full. Since we have redone the machine ourselves it has worked flawlessly.』

(it leaks all over the place)
『Alas, I've owned my DeLonghi BCO130T for four months and will have to toss it out. It's leaking all over the place. I have no one to blame but myself, because if you read the reviews, you'll find this problem discussed by users over and over again. But I WANTED it to work so badly since the price was so good for all the features it has.

But bad worksmanship is bad worskmanship. So to the garbage can it goes ;-( -

Now I order a coffee maker, I will pay close attention to the users comments.』

(GREAT!!!!)
『This Coffee/Espresso combo makes better coffee than most coffee shops I've been to. Easy to use, easy to clean, works fast.』
『The DeLonghi Combination Espresso/Coffee machine is an all-in-one machine that can brew coffee and espresso simultaneously. This machine can also prepare a great cappuccino, latte or hot chocolate for the perfect drink. The patented instant froth dispenser lets you add froth right in the same cup as your coffee or cappuccino. This machine features programmable digital timer that allows you to set the machine to turn on at a later time and even sets to the exact minute. The Vario system and Accuflavor selector dials allow you to choose the strength of espresso and coffee just the way you like it. The 10 cup Carafe allows you to make enough cups of coffee to keep everyone satisfied and the Drip Interrupt feature lets you have a cup before the pot is done brewing.』

『Was not sure beacuse of the price tag, but this product is worth every penny. The tools are solid, and the case was just right. Would surely buy again if needed.』

(Good quality tools, poor quality case.)
『I was pleased with the quality of the tools themselves, but had to return the item due to the very poor quality carrying case. Upon arrival from Amazon, several of the velcro tie-downs had separated from the lid, leaving tears in the fabric. It's a shame, as I would have enjoyed the grill set otherwise. I didn't re-order this brand, for fear that the next one would arrive the same.』

『AWESOME music. These musicians are incredible. What a great deal for a 2-disc set of this traditional music.』

(More than eminently listenable)
『I'm no connoisseur of Persian Classical music, I know nothing to speak of about it aside from what I've heard here. But this is intense and beautiful music, melodic and rhythmic in a way that is different from Western music without being so far afield (like, say, Chinese opera) that it demands entirely new ways of listening. It's a great introduction to a tradition. Having bought it, I'll buy more.』

(Unpolluted by western trends)
『Music interpreted with scholar responsibility. An impecable and sensitive interpretation. A chance to meet the Persian musical tradition without the new age rhetorics. Awfully cinematic !』

(Beautiful and very soulful)
『A stunning 2-CD set of live performances by the Persian supergroup now known as the Masters Of Persian Music... Kalhan Kalhor (also of the group Ghazal) played the Ur-fiddle known as the kamancheh, with rhythmic accompaniment by Homayoun Shajarian on tombak and melodic counterpoint by Hossein Alizadeh on the tar (lute). One of Persia's greatest modern vocalists, Mohammad Reza Shajarian leads with lyrical, soulful interpretations of mystical poetry by various classic Persian poets. Both the vocals and the instrumental sections rely heavily on improvisation, and this element of all the artists being fully in the moment adds to the sense of conviction and emotion that characterize all the recordings by this widely lauded group. The first disc is mellower and more introspective, while several songs on the second set build towards a more frenzied, ecstatic release... If you've enjoyed earlier albums by Ghazal or the Masters ensemble, this live album will thrill you as a well. Recommended!』
『As a meeting of living masters, this collaboration between legendary vocalist Mohammed Reza Shajarian, his multi-instrumentalist/apprentice singer son, Homayoun, kamancheh(spike fiddle) virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor plus Hossein Alizadeh, a noted exponent of thetar(lute) would be hard to top. Thus, it is not surprising that their recent USA tours were routinely sold out or that their debut album,Without You, was nominated for a 2003 Grammy. The tradition these artists so peerlessly exemplify is drawn from medieval Persian court music and Sufi devotional poetry. Intricate melodies flow outward from ancient modal tunings as the scratchy violin, rumblingtombak(a goblet-shaped frame drum) and plangent plucked strings alternatively mirror, augment and embark from Shajarian Senior¹s plaintive, soaring, preternaturally fluid flights of improvisation. That the performances were captured live under ideal sonic circumstances transmits all the immediacy of witnessing epochal interpretations as they flower from seed to deliriously fragrant full bloom. --Christina Roden

(Major "Asia Minor")
『I don't usually write reviews for CDs that are already out-of-print, but I'm going to make an exception to inform jazz customers of an amazing deal that is currently happening via one of Amazon's Marketplace vendors. The Fantasy label has unfortunately decided to remainder a large number of their Original Jazz Classics CDs, but thankfully Newbury Comics (based in the Boston area) has purchased an enormous selection of these titles, and is offering them at closeout prices. Some of these discs, like Dizzy Reece's 1962 session "Asia Minor," are absolutely terrific! For those of you who don't know this trumpeter, he was best known for a couple of Blue Note albums that have become highly sought after collectables. This album comes a few years after those dates, but how can you go wrong with a disc that features a sextet of Reece, Cecil Payne, Joe Farrell, Hank Jones, Ron Carter and Charlie Persip! Jazz devotees do yourself a favor, if you live in New England, go to a Newbury store and cash in on a once in a lifetime deal. If you live elsewhere, you can always have them shipped -- it'll be worth it.』
『Out of print in US! Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. Universal. 2008.』

(Superb artistry!)
『Alan Bardezbanian, or 'Sensei Al' as I and many others knew him (he was an 8th dan black belt in Shotokan karate, among many other things) has released an album that is both accessible and richly textured.

Bardezbanian is widely regarded as one of the great oud players of his time and the tyro may think his music would only reward those versed in the subtleties of the instrument, but as one who came to his music with essentially no experience with Middle Eastern music, I can attest that this album has something for anyone interested in world music and opus of a master.

Sadly, Sensei Al passed away a few years ago before he could see his music reach a broader audience. Fans of this album should take heart, as I've heard that his estate and bandmates have finished mixing the follow-up album he was working on when he died.

Anyone who knew Sensei Al, heard his stories, and benefited from his instruction - musical or martial - will never forget him. Thanks to the wide release of his work, many more can share the experience of his tremendous abilities for years to come.』

(LIVELY...fabulous musicianship)
『I listened to samples of a large number of Middle Eastern music CDs before choosing this one. It is completely instrumental, and there is a nice selection of different tempi and instrument combinations (this is not a solo Oud CD). There are a number of selections where the Oud is the featured instrument, but for the most part, the pieces are performed by a band of instruments with the Oud leading the way. The percussion is especially marvelous...you will be on your feet by measure sixteen of the first piece!

The recording is high quality in every way, and the music is quite authentic. The musicianship is first rate. I would especially recommend this CD for anyone who is just starting to listen to this genre of music.』

(Landmark recording from an underappreciated oud master)
『Alan Shavarsh Bardezbanian (Gardner) originally released this recording in 2002 as "From Kef to Classical", and it has been out of print until recently. Fortunately for fans of the oud and near eastern music, it is once again available. Bardezbanian showcases his breathtaking range here, as a composer (Sfekas Tsamiko, Suzie&Sozie's Dance), improviser, and interpreter of classic repertoire. His playing seems to effortlessly manage to balance soulfulness and soaring virtuosity. Not merely an oud virtuoso, Bardezbanian was also a master of the G clarinet. Highly recommended.

(pretty enough but really shoddy work)
『Its a pretty enough piece at a distance, however soon as i took it out of the box it was obvious how poorly it was constructed and of what cheap materials. Its very cheap looking within 5ft or so. i got 2 of them as gifts if i cant return them then i will simply throw them away.』

(Gorgeous lamp, much better than pictures....)
『This lamp is a bit expensive for the category that it is in. However, it is quite beautiful and much more elegant than the accompanying photo wood indicate. While I can't speak for the other finishes, the cherry rosewood choice is very striking. This is more mood lighting than practical lighting for a room, but if you are trying to create an elegant Asian feel, you can't go wrong here. For the quality level, it's a bit pricey, but aesthetically I am very satisfied.』

(The Chaser DVD)
『The Chaser is a very good movie. It is, however, very violent (just in case that type of movie is not you style).

Be forwarned that the DVD is poorly manufactured. I have bought it twice from two different sellers (one the extended version and one the standard version). Both discs had two or three hangups of up to ten seconds about three-quarters the way into the movie. I am not talking about the poor transitions of dual-layer discs. The discs looked new and were factory sealed, but they played at these times as if they had scratches.

(Hollywood bow down to the side that is greater than you!)
『Top notch! The acting , the directing and the the story line is perfect. If any one dare talk crap about these film, then he or she is not worth being a movie fan.
These film is da bomb and I am speechless.
The best thing in this film is that, it is so natural and it wasn't overhyped with too much fighjting scenes and most importantly the fighting scenes were very appropriate and the director went for it. Straight gore!

I hope hollywood doesn't ruin it, because they are good at that!』

『Visceral, nonstop carnage. The brutality in this film make Old Boy look like a joke... because it's based on actual events.

Not as good as Memories of a Murder, but better than Old Boy, tenfold.』

(Thrilling and comical crime drama)
『The Chaser is a different kind of investigation movie. You are told who the killer is fairly early in the movie, and the plot is about whether they can find proof to prosecute the killer or not. Just before the killer is arrested in the beginning, he has kidnapped another girl, and the main character tries to find out where she is throughout the movie.
The main character is a former detective who has turned pimp, and the killer has presumably kidnapped and/or killed all his girls, making it very personal.
There isn't much high-octane action in the movie, as this is mostly a thriller and not an action movie. The story is quite interesting, following mainly the pimp and the murderer seperatly. The story happens mostly at night and has a rather dark atmosphere, but it also has several comical moments that will make you laugh. The scenes are also fairly realistic. For example in foot chases the characters will get tired and sweaty really fast and when the chases are over they will typically gasp for breath and sometimes trip. I think this is very cool to see considering that in Hollywood movies characters can run full speed for 10 miles without sweating.
Overall, I think this was a very good movie! Great atmosphere, good story, realistic and funny.』

(Another great Korean thriller!)
『Korea has definitely caught up to Hong Kong in the action/thriller category with "The Chaser" being one of the best Asian crime flicks in years. Our anti-hero is a dirty ex-cop thrown off the task force for taking bribes. Now reduced to running an escort service, his girls start disappearing. Thinking they quit&ran off or "were sold", he sends off his last girl, a sympathetic ill mom raising her small daughter alone, not realizing the client is a serial killer that had murdered the other girls. After he (literally) runs into the killer by accident, the rest of the film becomes a suspenseful edge-of-your seat thrill ride as he must find the missing girl before she dies&nab the killer, despite police department interference, political pressure to release the guilty suspect&ring of keys as his only clue!
If you loved Korean crime movies like the great "Nowhere To Hide", "Les Formidables", the first "Public Enemy", etc. you are in for a treat. Even if you've never seen any contemporary Korean thrillers other than "Old Boy", this is one you cannot miss! As I hear it, the same people that took HK's great "Infernal Affairs"&remade it in English as "The Departed", plan the same fate for this one. If you are like me&prefer the original, subtitles and all, do not miss "The Chaser"!』

『The Korean blockbuster film 'The Chaser' (directed by Na Hong-jin, Bidangil Production Company) has attracted more than four million moviegoers since its release on February 14 2008. 'Chaser' has become the second Korean film to attract more than four million moviegoers this year after 'Forever the Moment'. The former exceeded the figure only 34 days after its release while the latter took 39 days to exceed the four million mark. The figure is more significant for 'The Chaser'』

(Fascinating Period Piece)
『(Understandably) low production values add-to rather than detract-from this viewing experience. Insights into the complexities of the Vietnam 'Conflict' abound, and are of particular value to Americans, who--like me--grew up in the States on a steady diet of intentionally misleading pablum regarding the war in SEA. Based on personal interest in and study of the region and its rich history, as well as extensive travel and work experience in the region, I know that this film rings truer than the vast majority of highly-polished but ultimately short-sighted/shallow Western productions dealing with the war. And if you order/appreciate Dat Kho, consider trying to acquire other films such as "Peasants in Distress" for even deeper insights into the region's history and culture.』

(Dat Kho; Land of Sorrows)
『"Dat Kho; Land of Sorrows" is a film depicting the story of one South Vietnamese family during the Vietnam War. Although the story is fiction, it is drawn from real life experiences. The writer weaves many timeless and poignant issues that are raised during the war. The film is directed by Ha Thuc Can, a former CBS cameraman that covered the war. This was his one and only venture in directing film. The film was shot on location in Vietnam and actually contains real footage of the evacuation of Hue during the Tet Offensive. The film stars Trinh Cong Son, a Vietnamese musician and antiwar protester. His songs are incorporated into the story line and help bring great emotional depth to the film. Several issues are addressed in the film, mainly the circumstances and hardships of Trinh Quan's (Trinh Cong Son) family; the issue of Buddhist immolation, the Tet Offensive and it also weaves a romantic subplot. The romance revolves around Thuy, Quan's sister, and Nghia, who is firm in his political neutrality. By creatively manipulating all of these issues, Ha Thuc Can delivers a wonderful depiction of what it was like to be a South Vietnamese during the Vietnam War.
The opening of the film is grim and dark, both in content and cinematography. The author's attempt to convey the bleak conditions of the war is firmly delivered. Quan questions Nghia about the conditions and status of the war. Nghia replies that they have a strong chance of winning and the "morale is high". Historically though, ARVN morale was notoriously low and they never had a very high chance of winning. Nghia candy coats the issue as to not worry Quan. Naturally, Quan will relay any news, good or bad, to his family and that will only cause conflict within the family unit. Protection of the family morale becomes a recurring theme throughout the movie. This opening scene ends with a powerful stare off between the Nghia and Quan where the camera shifts from one to the other a few times. Both are staring relentlessly at each other with furrowed brows. There is a sense of bonding and connection here that is greatly conveyed with this technique.
Next we hear in the distance prayers and chants of a Buddhist congregation. The congregation is praying for the immortal soul of Dieu Dihn whom has recently immolated herself in protest of the war. Nghia and Quan overhear this congregation. Quan comments that this is the fifth immolation since the beginning of the war. Sparingly and very nuanced, the film addresses a few times the issue of Buddhist immolation. Immolation, though, was not a phenomenon reserved to the era of the Vietnam War. On a small level, Buddhism has a history of immolation and self-mutilation. It is mainly referred to in religious texts and is usually reserved to metaphorical interpretations. During the Vietnam War, immolation was propelled into literal action by at least 37 devout Buddhists. The film should not lead one to believe that Buddhism, in general, condones these extreme acts of protest.
Quan joins a group on foot to walk back to his home city of Hue. You see the group walking by foot down the winding roads. The beginning credits are rolling and the sound of the traditional Dan Bau is playing. As they walk the road, focus is on the mountains and calm sea inlets. It is close to the end of this scene that a major motif is introduced; the sound of shots firing in the distance in two successive shots. This comes to symbolize the war and is revisited throughout the entire film. The group parts in the darkness so they have walked nearly 24 hours. Quan has a quick rendezvous with a love interest. They agree to meet the next day at Tu Duc's royal tomb. Tu Duc is frequently referred to as Vietnam's last emperor before French colonialism ensued. He staunchly opposed French occupation and was said to have cursed the French in his dying breath. The fact that Quan chooses this location to rendezvous is symbolic of his own wish for a free and independent Vietnam.
Quan continues on to his family home where he finds his mother and sister Thuy sorting our winter clothes. He surprises the two and after an emotional reunification, Thuy serves a meal. Mother briefs Quan on what has been happening with the family. Quan is then encouraged to perform a song on his guitar. Quan plays a song in Western style, in a Western key but which is sympathetic to the Vietnamese plight and relevant social conditions. This is a wonderful fusion and balance of Western and Eastern culture. Throughout the film, Quan comes to represent on a deeper level a balance between the East and West. Quan states, "My songs speak of the sufferings of our people and our desires for peace." The film embeds three of his songs. One is as follows;
When peace returns to our country
I shall visit many sad cemeteries
And tombs covered with grass
When killing ends in our country
Then children will sing on the roads
When peace returns to our country
I shall be continuously on the road
From Saigon to the centre
From Hanoi towards the south
I shall share everyone's happiness
And I hope to forget the history of my country

The remainder of the film revolves around the hardships of broken Vietnamese families. Nghia returns to his home only to find that both of his parents had been killed and his younger siblings were forced to live in a hillside with barely enough food to subsist. The climactic point comes when Quan's family comes under attack on the eve of Tet. They are joyfully playing a dice game despite the fact that Ha, one of the family brothers, was recently killed in Dakto. An American deserter is residing with them at this point. Once they realize that they are under fire and it's not just the sound of holiday firecrackers, they flee for safety. The American turns himself in, in hopes that it will help protect them somehow. Evacuation by the entire village is mandatory. They take up shelter and refuge in a Catholic church. This refuge only provides temporary shelter until it is also seized by gunfire. It is at this time that the director incorporates some chilling footage of actual evacuation of Hue's citizens.
The romantic subplot is tied up with an encounter between the two lovers, Thuy and Nghia. They risk their safety by meeting in secrecy in the woods. The scene becomes violent when they get shot at but as the gunfire ceases, Thuy finds a flower and points out the timelessness of its beauty to Nghia. She queries, "The flowers blossom despite the bombs, why?" Nghia replies, "The war goes on but flowers will go on blossoming and lovers will go on loving."
The film ends on a tragic note when one of the family members is shot during the evacuation from the church. That family member's last words sum up the desperation of everyone. They were, "it's no use shouting for help in this damned land, Mother, nobody would pay any attention...I no longer suffer". The family makes a hard decision to bury the deceased on the road side and continue on home. Mother states, "For if we must die, we shall die at home." The film ends with them walking down the road towards home. The Dan Bau is playing and you hear the succession of shots once again as a haunting reminder that the war and violence continue.

(The title says it all)
『Touching movie. It made my eyes filled with tears when I see the cruelty of war. No matter what side you're on, it must be heartwrenching to see the suffering that the Vietnamese people had to endure and the destruction of a beautiful country. Given it was made more than 30 years ago, I think the movie was excellently filmed and directed.』
『This foreign, English-subtitled film dramatizes the effect of the Vietnam War on a single South Vietnamese family, the inner conflict of decisions by each member of the family whether to remain in Vietnam or leave with the imminent advance and fall of Hue and eventual fall of Vietnam. Dat Kho, who's cast includes the beloved Vietnamese inconic anti-war songwriter/poet/artist Trinh Cong Son (1939-2001) who posthumously won the World Peace Music Award in 2004, is a story of the love of family, love of homeland, love of the culture and language of Vietnam and the ethereal love of the ingenue daughter for her fiance, foiled by the antagonistic forces of the ever-present war. A thought-provoking film.

(Ten Stars)
『I have spent too many years not knowing about Ozu and his brilliant films!! That being said, I Was Born But... is one of my all-time favorite films now. It reflects a more simple time but the underlying human conditions are exactly the same. It has one of the best -if not THE BEST-child actors. Tomio Aoki was a very young child when he made this film but brought humor, emotion, and realism to his acting. It is certainly a credit to Ozu that Aoki was cast along with the other superb actors. I have also watched Floating Weeds and Passing Fancy with Aoki cast and spent many happy hours enjoying these movies. I suppose I have conditioned myself to watch silent films because when I watch them with the musical scores I never once think about it. The actors, of course, were more demonstrative in keeping with this restriction but, as in a good book, the mind fills in the conversation. The subtitles are more than adequate. I am a very hard-to-please film watcher. I seldom find loud, brash, silly American action films to my liking. My preference is for internation and art-house films that take one into different times and worlds. The films in this particular Ozu collection made me laugh, made me think, and brought tears to my eyes which, I assure you, is not something easily accomplished. I would pay twice as much for these films and consider it money very well spent. We are privileged to have the opportunity to view them.』

(Silent Ozu films from the early 1930's)
『Of the 3 films in this package, I have only watched 'Tokyo Chorus' so far, but found it highly enjoyable. It depicts a Tokyo based husband who is under seige by his children, his wife, and his boss. When he loses is job, he and his family have to make some 'adjustments'. The film is filled with comic sequences and is obvious that Ozu was influence by the Hollywood clowns Chaplin, Lloyd, Sennet, etc., although most of the film is quite naturalistic and lacks the 'herky-jerkly' quality of hand cranked silents. Having spent several years in Japan, it is interesting to observe the similarities and differences in Japanese life in the 1930's compared to life at the end of the 20th century. The lead actor is capable of a wide range of emotions and all of the actors are very good. It is obvious that Ozu is a real director. In fact, he is considered the most 'Japanese' director. The fact that the film is silent is no deterrent.』

(Another 5-Star Ozu Series)
『I wish I had time to write a detailed review. I have yet to see an Ozu film that wasn't first-rate. If you haven't seen any of his movies maybe you should start with one of his later ones, but this is a fine series. If you don't understand Japanese and don't like subtitles this collection would be a good place to start.』

(MOVIES THAT SHOW AMERICAN AND JAPAN ARE ALIKE IN ALOTA WAYS)
『Everything everybody here has said about these superb silent movies is true. Beyond that, these fine films show that silent Japanese films were every bit as good as our American movies then, and that the values, natures and problems in Japan and America then were pretty much the same. (Of course I've haven't yet run into a Chaplain, Keaton or Laurel and Hardy in Japanese silent films. But Oza certainly measures up to our best directors, then and now.)

I expect our societies and arts today are very parallel
too. People is people, times are times. Zen-sekai no."』

(A delightful glimpse into silent Japan)
『After receiving high acclaim for his special cinematic style in directing movies of the `40s and `50s, it's about time the world saw some of Yasujiro Ozu's earlier work in the silent medium, and this excellent set of three films from the early 1930s balances the scales nicely. Best remembered for his realistic portrayals of family life in medium-class Japan, Ozu obviously developed his remarkable insight into human nature and relationships already in the 1920s, as these three family comedies clearly show. Although very similar to his well-known films of later decades, these silent films have a subtle touch of comedy to spice things up and - in my opinion - make them even more entertaining than his later sound films. Watching Ozu's films in general feels like stepping into the lives of real people with all their thoughts, feelings and problems as if you are right there among them. Attention to details, natural acting and a tendency to linger on what seems like mundane daily actions all add to this overall impression of being involved in the film, not just being a distant observer. This skill was already honed to perfection by the time Ozu directed these three charming family stories in the early 1930s when the rest of the world was embracing sound films, yet Ozu, it seems, wanted to perfect and continue the beautiful and artistic silent film medium for as long as possible. He directed his first sound film in 1936, beginning a series of more sombre, even somewhat depressing family dramas, making this set of comedies a pleasant and refreshing new look at Ozu's work. Keeping to the formula he knew best, Ozu's three family comedies include young children, and the focus is on how everyone interacts with one another in the family circle as well as at work and in other surroundings. "Tokyo Chorus" follows the ups and downs in the life of an average working man who becomes unemployed and struggles to keep his wife and children happy, but these real-life problems are tempered with moments of sweet, almost childlike humour, quite different from the often coarse comedy seen in the West. For me, the most entertaining of the three is "Passing Fancy", which focuses on the relationship between a father and son living in poor conditions but helped along by neighbours and friends as the bungling father tries to sort out his life. Children are the stars in the third film, "I was Born, But..." where two young brothers learn to deal with moving to a new neighbourhood and the new kids on the block, but fathers once again play a key role in the family interactions. The natural acting by both adults and children impressed me the most in these films, along with Ozu's apparent easy and casual approach of glimpsing into family life with understanding, compassion and a little bit of wicked humour. While the picture quality of "Tokyo Chorus" is not quite up to the same high standard as the others, it is still enjoyable to watch, especially with the optional piano musical score by Donald Sosin, who does a fine job adding the right ambience to each scene. The DVDs have their individual slim cases with good notes inside which help shed some more light on this overlooked early part of Ozu's impressive career. For Ozu and silent film collectors alike, this is a special and unique addition not to be missed!

『In the late twenties and early thirties Yasujiro Ozu was working steadily for Shochiku studios honing his craft on dozens of silent films in various genres from romantic melodramas to college comedies to gangster pictures - and of course movies about families. In these three droll domestic films - Tokyo Chorus I Am Born But... Passing Fancy - Ozu movingly and humorously depicts middle-class struggles and the resentments between children and parents establishing the emotional and aesthetic delicacy with which he would transform the landscape of cinema.Three-disc set includes:Tokyo Chorus (1931) 90 minutesI Was Born But...(1932) 90 minutesPassing Fancy (1933) 100 minutesSystem Requirements:LENGTH: 280 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY/FAMILY GATHERINGS UPC: 715515029124 Manufacturer No: ECL045DVD』
『Tenth in the Eclipse Series, Criterion's effort to reintroduce "lost, forgotten, and overshadowed classics,"Silent Ozuincludes three early Yasujiro Ozu films that are incredibly entertaining with or without the piano scores offered by Donald Sosin. Ozu, the master of bittersweet family dramas, apparently based later films on these three--Tokyo Chorus(1931),I Was Born But…(1932), andPassing Fancy(1933)--though there is no lack of action, passion, or cinematic revelry in these prototypes. Crafted at Shochiku studios, each film reveals an everyman's struggle to pay bills and raise children. Not only do these movies offer slice-of-life glimpses into 1930s Japan, but they also honor familial roles with humor and respect. It is Ozu's ability to cut from emotional pain to comedy and back again that lends his films such deep humanity. InTokyo Chorus, a family struggling through unemployment and illness bond during tribulations they face. Shinji Okajima's (Tokihiko Okada) son (Hideo Sugawara) asks for a bike right before Okajima loses his position at an insurance office. Disparities between what is desired and what is provided grow from there. When daughter Miyoko (Hideko Takamine) needs hospitalization, Okajima and his wife stoop lower socially than they wish to make ends meet. The family's determination undercuts their poverty. When Okajima tells his wife, "I feel I'm getting old, I've lost my spirit," she offers to help him pass flyers out to drum up restaurant business where he works. Hilarious scenes, such as when the insurance office workers line up in the loo to secretly peek into cash bonus envelopes, make the most of silent physical comedy.Passing Fancyis similar, though the impoverished father, Kihachi (Takeshi Sakamoto), works to locate a wife to mother his hooligan son.

I Was Born But…is the funniest of the three, with itsLittle Rascalslike attention to the child's point of view. It opens with a shot of car wheels spinning in mud, since Mr. Yoshii (Tatsuo Saito) has just moved his family from suburban Azabu to Tokyo. As Yoshii slaves to improve his employment status, comedic scenes focus on his two sons, Ryoichi (Hideo Sugawara) and Keiji (Tomio Aoki), who continuously ward off local bullies while trying to please their dad. When the boys ditch class to avoid getting beat up, the younger remembers that he was "supposed to get an E in calligraphy today." Lying in a meadow, he does his lesson and recruits a passerby to forge a good grade on his paper. Later, after classmates swallow raw sparrow eggs to impress each other, the two stars feed their eggs to the family dog, accidentally sickening him. Scenes become funnier as tensions build between the parents and their rebellious sons. It is amazing how much Ozu can achieve with so little dialogue, which crops up sparingly printed on cards. One may wonder if sound these days even improves our film viewing experience. In the least,Silent Ozurecalls quieter times, when perhaps just as much narrative was expressed. --Trinie Dalton

『This saved me during college. While looking for some higher end instant noodles I stumbled across a site that recommended the Indomie brand. I got these to try the different flavors before investing in buying a larger case and found that while many taste rather similar (especially after you add the hot pepper spice) there were a few I preferred. This product is definitely better than the overly salty ramen noodles which I could never bring myself to finish.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review
(Has the be the greatest soft drink EVER!)
『Ramune has to be one of the coolest and most unique soft drinks that I have ever seen. My kids had been dying to try this stuff ever since they had come across it on J-Box, the popular Japanese import webshop. Ramune is incredibly popular in it's native Japan, and now it looks like the fun is beginning to spread here in the States.

To open a bottle of Ramune, you have to remove the top, pop out this little plastic plunger from it's casing, and then use the plunger to pop out a marble that seals the neck of the bottle. The neck of the bottle has two indentions that will hold the marble when you tip the bottle back to drink from it, keeping the neck of the bottle clear. Hold the bottle the wrong way, and the marble will clog things up. You can avoid carbonated overflow when opening by pressing gently on the plunger until it depresses the marble; knock it down with force and you're sure to get a fountain of spray.

The original flavor reviewed here tastes a lot like Sprite, but Ramune also comes in several other flavors. It uses high fructose corn syrup and/or cane sugar as a sweetener (It lists both on the label, which usually means that it uses whatever is cheapest on the world market at the time of bottling. Listing both also means that they don't have to change their labeling every time they change sweetener.)

This is a way fun product that kids (and most adults) will have a blast with. It's a smaller portion (8 ounces) than what we're used to here in the US, but that actually works out for us as we're trying to limit the amount of soda that our kids consume. Ramune works great as an occasional soda treat and the fun factor alone keeps us coming back for more. Ramune is easy to find at just about any Asian market, but for those who don't have easy access to one, ordering here on Amazon would be recommended.

Also, for the safety conscious, I can attest that these drinks are very safe. We've never had a problem with the marble, and I can't find any reports on the internet that would indicate any safety concerns with this drink. It's not a choking hazard, in other words. Ramune means 'carbonated' in Japanese, and I can highly recommend this wonderful and very different drink.』

(Keeper of Treasure)
『Do you keep things? You know, horde treasures? If you could keep just one of those treasures, which would it be, especially if it signified something of great importance? Ba chose the lotus seed, the subject of this nostalgic story of Vietnam.

When she saw the child emperor abdicate, she ran into the royal garden and took a seed as a memento of a fallen leader (even though he was a mere figurehead at the time). After she married and had children, Ba still held onto the seed. When the war came, she escaped with her children as boat refugees. She grabbed the seed and not her pearl combs to take to America.

One day a grandson, headstrong and curious, wanted to see a lotus flower, so took Ba's precious seed and planted it near her onion patch. What is an emperor, he wanted to know. What is a golden dragon throne? What is a lotus bloom? These stories filled his head. Ba was heart-sick at the loss.

One day "a beautiful pink lotus/ unfurl[ed] its petals,/ so creamy and soft." Ba was delighted. "It is the flower of life and hope...the flower of my country." In time she gave a seed to each grandchild. The boy's sister, the narrator, hid her seed to repeat the new tradition for her own children one day.

So simple. But a simple story is brought to life by Tatsuro Kiuchi's "light-infused" paintings in oil and alkyd colors. There are three different lotus illustrations, each a unique artistic rendering. The first is a close-up of a single bloom against a mountain landscape in a brilliantly red-cast sky. The second is of the palace lotus garden where sunlight is soft and makes the blooms shimmer in whites and pinks. The third is a soft close-up of a single glowing pink bloom.

The lotus seed. A single treasure from Vietnam. I hope this story is true.

*The author's note at the end provides historical background of Vietnam.』

(A wonderful book)
『This has to be one of my favorite children's books and being a soon to be teacher I have read a lot of children's books. One of the reasons it's my favorite is that it touches a subject that is close to my heart, the Vietnamese culture. My mom came to America after the Vietnam war with my sister who was 5 and brother who was 1. I never knew how important the lotus seed could be, but growing up I enjoyed eating the fruit and peeling it off the seed. This book is truely one of a kind and as I read it I learned more about my mom's culutre and just how special it is.

This is one book that I'll keep for many, many years even when I retire from teaching.』

(Lotus seed)
『This book is great for encouraging students to ask questions and infer meaning! Try it out in the classroom!』

(This book is awsome)
『The lotus seed is about someone's grandmother who gets a lotus seed to remember her emperor. It takes place in Vietnam. It has lots of information obout what they used to flee from the Vietnam war. I think Tatsuro Kiuchi did a good job with the illustrations. I think every one from 5-8 should read this book.』

(Symbol of a Lotus Seed)
『This book helps me remember more about Vietnam and why I appreciate my culture so much. The significant symbolism of the lotus seed is the culture Vietnam and what the woman endurance in her past. Ba picked out a lotus seed from the imperial garden because of its beautiful and fresh scent. The lotus seed has never left her side as she carries it with her through the tragedy times and moved to a new country after the Vietnam War. One of her grandchildren planted the lotus seed in the backyard and it grew into a beautiful lotus flower. The beauty of it reminds Ba of her country.

This is definitely one of the best children's book I have ever read. The images are beautifully drawn as they describe Vietnam and the story. The symbolism of the lotus seed reminds me of my culture and I should never forget it. I really like how the author added a Vietnamese poem at the back. A must read for all young and old!』

『When she is forced to leave Vietnam, a young girl brings a lotus seed with her to America in remembrance of her homeland. Reprint. Reading Rainbow.PW. AB.

(Works great)
『I bought this for my parents. They eat rice every day and this rice cooker holds up to the frequent use.』

(Wish I'd have bought it sooner!)
『This is a great product. The rice cooks up perfectly every time. It is a snap to clean, also.』

(Good basic rice cooker)
『This is the third and best rice cooker that I've owned. All my rice cookers have been of this same general type -- a simple boiler pot rather than a sophisticated fuzzy logic appliance. The other two were a Rival whose non-stick surface quickly deteriorated and a Panasonic that worked adequately but was not as sturdy as this Zojirushi. I regularly make brown rice, wild rice, and steel-cut oats in this cooker and am always satisfied. It does the job quickly and well. I did have to experiment a few times to get the right amount of water for the cooked rice texture that I prefer (slightly chewy). This cooker does sputter somewhat, as do all similar cookers, but I control that by 1) always rinsing the grain, 2) adding 1 teaspoon of oil or butter per cup of grain, and 3) not cooking more than 2 cups (rice cooker cups, that is) of grain at a time. And if it sputters, so what? It's easily wiped off the counter. I don't have a problem with the fact that there's no keep-warm function, since with a pot this small a warmer would increase the likelihood of scorching. As it is, the rice will get overly brown on the bottom if not stirred up as soon as the cooker switches off. The only complaint I have with this machine is that the measurement markings on the inside of the pot are very difficult to read. But overall, I'm quite happy with it. It doesn't have much in the way of features, but it makes cooking whole grains a breeze.』

(Cold rice)
『When I ordered the Zojirushi NHS-06 rice cooker, I expected it to keep the rice warm after it was cooked. Unfortunately, while other models have this prime feature and this one implied it did, the NHS-06 does not. I called Customer Service and arranged to return it in August. I had an E-mail saying you had received the cooker and were crediting my account $42.64. Please confirm. I expect to order another item in the near future. Thank you. S. Thackeray』

(Rice cooker)
『Zojirushi NHS-06 3-Cup Rice Cooker It works great though I stop it before it completes cooking to retain the extra moisture for the brown rice』
『Busy cooks cherish rice cookers. This one cooks up to 3 cups of dry rice (white or brown) and keeps it warm up to five hours. A glass lid permits monitoring of the cooking process. Instructions and a cooking chart explain everything. A measuring cup and serving spatula are included. The cooker operates with admirable simplicity: just push a switch to start. The switch and a light turn off when cooking is completed, and the unit automatically goes into its keep-warm mode. Stay-cool handles on the cooker's sides permit it to be moved. Only plastic scrubbers and mild detergent should be used for cleaning.--Fred Brack
『Sometimes it seems the world of appliances has no room for smaller households, the mantra seems to be "the bigger the better." However, in this case there is an exception. The Zojirushi 3 cup rice cooker makes the ideal amount of perfectly steamed, plump and tender rice for small families, or even singles (after all you can always warm up the leftovers). The non-stick removable pan is easy to clean and a glass-lid lets you keep an eye on the progress.』
