(Great canner for the price) 『I got this specifically for canning, and have used it now to make pickles, apples, applesauce, applebutter, roasted peppers and am going to be doing squash next. It has worked great, it seems of good quality, but this is ENORMOUS! I don't think I really realized how big it would be. Due to it's size you have the advantage of being able to get the water deep enough to hold 2 tiers of pint cans for a boiling water bath (though getting an extra rack would make that easier), and it holds 7 quart jars as well. Thing is though that the 16 quart says it can hold 7 quart jars as well, and while probably it couldn't do 2 rows of pints as a boiling water bath, I bet it gets up to temperature alot faster and doesn't take up so much space. Those are really my only complaints with this, it takes quite a while to build up pressure and it is just so big I have no choice but to stick it in the room I keep my canned products, no room in my kitchen.
That said, before I bought this I had no idea you can use a pressure canner to cook. I tried using this to make a beef roast, and it was UNBELIEVABLE! In like 40 minutes I had beef that fell apart like I had roasted it all day, only it was juicier and the flavor was MUCH BETTER penetrated through, amazing! Of course the problem was clean up... it's just so big that it barely fits in my sink. I ended up finding an 8qt pressure cooker that I've been using since to do my day to day cooking with (and you can save money buying cheaper meats that will taste like you cooked them all day!) and I pull out this for the canning... though I am seriously considering doing my Thanksgiving turkey in this!! (I bet it will be good too).
This is I am finding out what is known as "first generation" for a pressure cooker, and it makes quite a bit of noise, but that doesn't bother me so much, those others are alot more $$ of of my pocket... I can handle a little noise, thank you. You also do not have to do 8 at a time, just steam them for a few less minutes.』
(Great Brown Rice) 『I do eat a bit of rice but am more prone to keeping to brown rice. I had an old cheap rice cooker that basically turned on, cooked, and went to keep warm...no other settings. It also made quite a bit of starchy mess.
I have just made my first cup of rice in the Sanyo. The brown rice turned out great..a bit of crunch, soft, and not sticky at all. The cooker itself was a breeze to clean and nothing stuck to the cooker. I honestly was not too sure about buying a rice cooker for $100 plus but I am glad I did!
Next up is steaming.
BTW - included with this is a little recipe book..it seems pretty good.

(Inspiring Movie) 『At her husband's funeral, a Jewish woman (Shirley MacLaine) is approached by an Italian man (Marcello Mastroianni). After offering his condolences he asks her on a date. She accepts just to shock her sister and mother-in-law who are watching over her with their instructions of what she can and cannot do. On their first date, for coffee, she learns that 25 years ago her husband was going to leave her but was talked out of it by the man who sits before her. He's waited all this time for her to be free. She doesn't know how to deal with information so she deserts him. He's not easily discouraged and positions himself in her life affecting both her and the members of her family.
This story is about life after death and how the death of a loved one affects those left behind; in particular, the wife and her two daughters and their children. Shirley MacLaine is excellent as the bitter widow who laid down her life for her husband and children and now that her husband is gone and her children are grown and on their own she isn't too sure what to do with herself.
Kathy Bates plays an overweight waitress with two children of her own and wears her pain on her sleeve while her Marcia Gay Harden plays her sister, a bank clerk who dresses up like different movie stars to cover up her pain. Marcia makes a hot Marilyn Monroe and Anne Bancroft. She has a son who things he's Superman and is grieving over another child that died. Both women gave stellar performances.
The costumes, food, funeral, wedding and family dinners are just window dressing for this gripping story about coming to terms with aging and the loneliness associated with both loss of love and loss of who they use to be. But it's also a celebration of the time remaining and finding a reason to celebrate each day. It was longish in parts and sometimes it was hard to understand what Mastroianni was saying but overall an inspiring movie.』

But the quality was just fine, plus there are some bonus postcards that were kind of a cool surprise. I don't have a widescreen TV to skew the image and I didn't see the theatrical release of the movie to miss any songs, so for the average consumer like me I think it's a good buy. Note the third "extras" disc was not so good quality and there were some interview subjects whose audio was so muffled we had no idea what they were saying. It didn't detract from our enjoyment of the movie and we are still glad we bought the three-disc collector's edition. If you have reasonable expectations, I think you will be glad too.』

Almost everyone delivers a brilliant performemce, If you are into French History or just good drama, you cannot afford to miss this wonderfull film. a film with perfection in all sences, surely wont dissapoint you. BUT we were expecting it to cover Milarepa's life, not just the first part where he gets into negative magic. Very disappointing. Presumably there is Part 2 still to come, but when??? And will that be the lot or will there be Part 3 then?』
(Fascinating story of intrigue, betrayal, and revenge begins the life of famous Tibetan saint Milarepa) 『Filmed in the Spiti Valley on the Indian-Tibetan border, this award winning film tells the story of the first half of Milarepa's life (1052-1135), whose path to enlightenment began with revenge. A second movie is planned to complete the story.
When his well-to-do merchant father died, Milarepa's uncle and aunt took all the family's wealth, suddenly thrusting Milarepa and his mother into poverty. His mother plots revenge by sending Milarepa away to study sorcery. Milarepa comes back to the village and causes a violent lightning storm to kill many people.
When the villagers chase him, Milarepa causes large rocks to fall from a ridge blocking their way. As he escapes Milarepa meets an old monk, and learns of Buddha's teachings. Milarepa returns to his sorcery teacher, who advises him to study with Marpa. The film ends with Milarepa seeking Marpa.
The landscape is stark and beautiful. The special effects are quite well done - I especially liked the scene where Milarepa gains mastery in sorcery, a bit like a Pink Floyd psychedelic trip from the 60s. My favourite scene was when Milarepa meets an old monk while escaping from the villagers, and sits quietly with old Buddhist paintings all around him on the wall. You can feel that his redemption is at hand.
As companions to this movie, I highly recommend reading a book about his life such as The Magnificent Trickster - The Story Of Milarepa by Molly MacGregor, and some of his teachings like in the book Milarepa: Songs On The Spot by Nicole Riggs.』

(Milarepa of yesterday and today) 『This is indeed a great movie, about cultivation in Buddha Fa, and how Buddha's Fa can really change a person, from a murderer to saint, and, eventually, to achieve real fruit status.
I have written Milarepa's story elsewhere before, there are actually more inspiring, touching, and uplifting stories of him when he began cultivation. Unfortunately, this is not captured in this movie. May be we'll see a sequel?
This also reminds me of today's Milarepas, millions of practitioners of Falun Dafa (Falun Gong). They are truly remarkable as well, overcoming great tribulations and offering salvation to sentient beings, in light of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance, the fundamental characteristics of the universe and the ultimate in Buddha Fa (www.falundafa.org). If you have not heard about it, check it out, you will love it. Milarepa's main consciousness, where ever that might be at present, will also be glad to see his story helped you in this regard.

(Excellent beyond measure) 『Let me start with what others have said with regards to the film's one drawback... it is part one of two. As enthralling and far better than expected as this film is, it disappointingly terminates midway through the story. The end of this movie is a logical breaking point, however, a breaking point all the same, leaving you wanting more.
That said, there is no reason to give this DVD anything less than 5 stars, because it could not be better than it is. Interestingly, most of the cast and crew are from a Buddhist monastery. You would never know until you read the credits at the end because there is nothing provincial or pedestrian about it. The acting, dialogue, special effects... everything for that matter, comes across as a very professional production.
There is considerable Buddhist "morality" conveyed as well, which is perfectly handled by the monks who made this film, but not in a heavy-handed way. In fact, one would need a Buddhist background to recognize the point-blank Dharma lessons contained within. This is something that could be viewed and enjoyed by anyone, including non-Buddhists. Finally, there is a most excellent documentary about the historical Milarepa as bonus material. Herein the viewer will get the full picture with regards to who the main character is as well clear and well-explained Buddhist thought on the same.
Highly recommended to everyone and of special interest to those with a leaning towards Buddhist thought.

Mysteriously, my first one disappeared around the time my son left for college. Stranger still, an identical one materialized in his apartment! Where is Sherlock Holmes when you need him? Or perhaps, Tara King and Emma Peale?
Anyway, I love rice, and in general, I believe it should only be steamed, that the grains should stand alone, and the rice should be soft, but well defined. Gummy, mushy, sticky, and crunchy, are all headed for the dustbin, not my plate.
But after a lifetime of cooking and consuming the world's most widely consumed grain (over 600 million tons in 2000), I have been frustrated in my efforts to cook consistently perfect wholegrain rice in a reasonable period of time. It was out of that frustration that I began to be interested in pressure type rice cookers. I looked at several brands at a large Asian store, but held off due to the $300+ to $800+ price tags. Then I discovered the Sanyo. At roughly half the price of the next competitor, I figured it was worth trying, and I am very glad that I did.
For a cooker which boils instead of steaming, the results are quite good. And it produces consistently good results, even with the most difficult rice varieties and blends. For those of you who have experienced the very annoying bowl shaped outer "crust" produced by some of the Japanese cookers, that has not been a problem with this cooker. (I suppose some may love this outer crust, and consider it a feature, but do not count me among them.)
Of course, this cooker does more than all sorts and varieties of rice. It also does soups, porridge, etc.,. But I have to admit, I've never made use of those features. I do know that my son sets up meals in his appropriated cooker before going to bed, and, using the timer, has food ready to load into his bento when he heads out to school in the mornings, and that he finds this to be very convenient.
One thing new, which came with my "replacement" cooker was a small recipe booklet by Martin Yan. Mr. Yan is very entertaining on television, and I am sure the recipes are good (although a couple of them seem a bit bizarre, like Asian Jambalaya), but I wish he had talked about the ways of using the cooker, instead of just giving us a few recipes and pictures. I guess I prefer the theory behind the cooking, and then I can simply improvise from there.
It concerns me to note the mention another reviewer made, of having difficulty in obtaining parts. I haven't needed anything for mine, but it does have some critical bits and pieces which could wear out, break, or wander off. I was always careful about them (until the whole machine "disappeared", so to speak), and I shall be extra careful now that I have read parts may be an issue.
The cooker can be a little noisy for short intervals. Apparently it uses a vibration type pump, similar to what is used in many espresso machines. And of course, you have to be mindful of the steam which is vented at certain times. The cooker goes through a series of cycles, in which the pressure is reduced to cause a sudden boiling event, during which the rice is circulated within the pot by the resulting agitation. It is this cycling which is the reason for all the unexpected activity which occurs during cooking.
Overall, I have found it to be a very serviceable machine which produces very satisfactory results with a wide range of rice varieties. For white rice, and Haiga, I still prefer to use other methods (primarily a steamer). But, for whole grain, it can't be beaten, unless maybe you want to part with $830 for the difficult to find Toshiba "Vacuum Pressure Rice Cooker". Other, less stratospheric, options you might wish to consider, are the merely expensive Zojirushi NP-HTC Induction Heating Pressure Rice Cooker&Warmer - Color: Stainless Brown, 5.5 cups / 1.0 liter , the larger Zojirushi NP-HTC Induction Heating Pressure Rice Cooker&Warmer - Color: Stainless Brown, 10 cups / 1.8 liters , or the slightly less pricey Cuckoo Rice Cooker | CRP-HD1010F (Ivory/Silver) .』
(Cost is no object is you love rice) 『The Sanyo ECJ-PX50S 5-Cup Micro-Computerized Pressure Rice Cooker and Steamer is simply the most exquisite rice cooker that you can imagine. I looked long and hard and did much research before my purchase. I almost purchased the Zojirushi because of all the hype. I was told by friends in the know that I had to have a Zojirushi to experience great rice. But tests, user reviews and the specs of the Sanyo kept pulling me back.
Okay, I purchased it a month ago and was immediately impressed with the overall quality. This was my second 5 quart cooker as my last one, a Wolfgang Puck from QVC started burning the rice after five years. I thought I was happy with the Puck; that is until I got perfect rice from the Sanyo. No matter what you think, read, see or envision, you have not tasted great rice until you have rice from this cooker. But there is a catch.
The catch is to never believe ANYONE, including me, when they use the term, "perfect rice." What that really means is perfect rice to them; their individual palette and desired texture of the finished product. I learned by dining with dozens of friends, that what they think is great rice ranges from terrible - to - excellent and many shades in between. The recipe book provided will give you a middle-of-the-road idea for making basically "good" rice, but to use this cooker requires a bit of patience and willingness to experiment. Let me give you my approach and I hope it works for you.
Make your first rice using the method outlined in the booklet. Use their measuring cup as well as the calibration lines on the inside of the bowl, etc. Taste the rice and write down in your notebook a line or two about the rice. Next try manipulation of the basic recipe by changing the texture to FIRM, SOFT, or REGULAR to see which works best. Then try using a¼ cup less or more water and repeat the variations again remembering to always make notes on the results of each batch. This will help you to adjust the recipe for your particular taste. I made a batch-a-day for two weeks until I got the magic "perfect" and it's been "perfect" for me ever since.
The rice this cooker makes is so wonderful that sometimes I eat it by the bowl with nothing else. There is one thing that you must do if you're going to invest in a professional appliance like the Sanyo Pressure Rice Cooker; you must use a better rice than most Americans buy at their supermarket. I can tell you that you will never get great rice from some generic North Carolina or Texas rice. Much of this rice is starchy and already old upon delivery to your store. The quality of rice they make is just barely better than cattle feed grain. The cooked grains often are rock hard in the middle yet soft on the outside. Sometimes these cheaper rice grains are sticky, crumbly and unpalatable. If you going to use a $200 rice cooker, learn about Basmati, Jasmine and Arborio rice. There is a Texas based rice called Jasmati; stay away from it; it's not true Jasmine nor true Basmati, but is an anomalous domestic hybrid marketed to lovers of aromatic rice like Indonesian Jasmine or Himalayan Basmati rice. Learn about par-boiled rice versus short grain generics. Study the subtle differences between brown rice and NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, I repeat, NEVER use those instant rice concoctions designed for the microwave like Success rice in your cooker.
PROS: Easy cleanup, well designed, durable, incredible titanium inner pot, retractable cord, super accurate always on clock display, nice spatula cradle.
CONS: I can't afford to buy two just in case something happens to this one. I never want to be without this rice cooker. In other words; no cons.
Conclusions: I went to my local upscale kitchenware shop after I purchased this one. I saw all the models displayed side-by-side; the Sanyo was so much nicer than all the others including the Zojirushi as to be scarcely believable. If you love rice and have the time to learn how to make your "perfect" rice, this is the rice cooker for you. Again, if you don't experiment and put in the time, you'll get "good" rice every time, but you won't get "perfect" rice until you perfect your technique. 』
(Delightful rice cooker) 『My husband and I purchased this rice cooker several months ago after our old one died. It was pricey, but after reading the reviews, we decided to go for it. Originally, we had wanted to get a pressure rice cooker that our friend has, which makes rice quickly and well, but we couldn't find it. My husband hates the crust on the bottom of the rice and with this machine, the rice comes out beautiful and crust-less with both white and brown rice. The finished rice is always fantastic. I was startled at how long it took the machine to make rice, but don't mind now since figuring out the timer setting.
The timer setting is extremely convenient. With this product, I can set the time I want the rice to be done ahead of time. It is one less thing to worry about when company comes over for dinner or when I know I'll be having a busy night. We have also used it to make porridge. We just put the ingredients in the night before and set the time we plan on having breakfast the next morning. It always comes out well, even if we toss some dried beans in or other things. I was surprised the first time when the beans came out perfectly cooked with the porridge and rice. My mother usually precooks the beans she includes in her rice.
At first, I thought washing the rice cooker would be a pain with all the small parts the other reviewers mentioned, but it's not bad at all. The titanium coated pot cleans with a few swipes. The small parts have been fine thus far, but I'm always sure to plug up the sink when I clean it so I can retrieve anything if it falls. We haven't had to deal with Sanyo service yet and I want to avoid it!

The microwave refused to run more than a few seconds tonight, and emitted a bad smell so it is now unplugged and waiting to be hauled away. We expected it to last far longer than four years, three and a half months! Our old Sharp gave faithful service for over twenty-five years!!!』
(Unreliable -- stay away!) 『 UNRELIABLE -- I have had mine about 4 years. I had to have it repaired a couple of times under warranty, and then two more time that I paid for. Now it has failed yet again. If I were to repair it this time, my repair costs would exceed my purchase price.
INTERFERES WITH WIRELESS NETWORK -- when on, it brought my wireless networking essentially to a stop. The microwave it replaced has slightly more power, and has no discernible effect on my wireless network. For now, I am going back to that.
BOTTOM LINE -- I'm going back to my older microwave, and if I really do miss having one this big will buy something other than a Panasonic.
Too bad about the problems, because I like the large size (for large baking dish, or defrosting a good-sized roast), and (when it works) it cooks well. I just cannot see paying $60 or so per year to have it fixed (not to mention the inconvenience).』

Based on my experience with two predecessors to this oven, however, I want to leave potential buyers with a caveat:
The first lasted barely a year before it died: the oven stopped heating, and the timer was messed up.
Because we liked the large size and other features, we purchased the next year's model. This one lasted four years, but this morning it died the same death--would only set for a few seconds, generated no heat during that time.
Our previous microwaves (Quasar and Sharp) lasted for over ten years, and based on the similar symptoms on the two Panasonic models, I just wanted to caution buyers that this may not be the best oven available.』

A fun game with a decent plot, and memorable characters."Heart of China" is realistic not also because of its setting, which is real China early in the 20th century, but mainly because of its gameplay. It is an adventure which is not based on puzzles (although it surely features more puzzles than "Rise of the Dragon"), but on dialogue choices which advance the story. We have seen many games which merged fantastically tough and complicated puzzles with dialogue-driven gameplay, such as Gabriel Knight or Tex Murphy games, but very few which were ready to give up or at least to weaken the puzzle-solving aspect of an adventure, in order to give free room to realistic experience and to dialogue choices which really matter. "Heart of China" is one of those games. It has puzzles, but they are woven into the body of the game and do not disturb the flow of the story. The dialogue choices are the core of the game, and you must be careful when choosing a dialogue line, because it is quite easy to die in the game (although maybe not as easy as in "Rise of the Dragon").Graphically, "Heart of China" is brilliant, with even more lucious, beautifully designed backgrounds than "Rise of the Dragon", and faces of real actors nicely filmed and integrated into the game's graphics.
And, last but not the least, "Heart of China" is funny. The easy-going hero Lucky is a constant object of jokes from the Chinese, and he surely can joke himself. The game is not less amusing than such classics of laughter as "Simon the Sorcerer" or "Sam and Max Hit The Road".』

This one was priced a lot lower, so i thought i'd give it a shot. When it arrived though, i got suspicious. The material looked and felt synthetic, despite the '100% Silk' label sewn on to the bag. I then tried a burn test on a small piece of the fabric, and lo and behold, it's pure polyester. Silk should burn with a smell like burning hair, and leave soft ash. Polyester burns with a sweetish 'burnt plastic' smell and melts into a hard blob of plastic... that's exactly what this material did. It's not silk - it's a cheap polyester bag that certainly isn't worth $25.
I'll be contacting Amazon to get my money back and hopefully this dishonest seller won't be selling here any more.』

Set just prior to the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, Horse Soldiers tells the tale of the Army Special Forces and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) invasion of Afghanistan following that attack. It ties together loose ends from this time and fills in some gaps such as the stories of Mike Spann and John Walker Lindh and what exactly happened in Afghanistan during this time.
Doug Stanton does a fine job of telling the story of the brave soldiers and agents who fought in the opening days of the war in Afghanistan. His method of describing the environment is superb. I had listened to the audiobook and for the most part I could picture the surrounding environment based on the descriptions provided.
One aspect that made "Horse Soldiers" difficult at times were the many characters and the fast pace. The core group of characters are treated in great detail, but there are many more who are not given as much treatment. When the action kicks into full gear it's sometimes difficult to remember who's who's and what's going on. In all fairness this is likely not the author's fault - it's strictly the nature of the beast - fast pace and confusion. If nothing else this gave me an appreciation of how difficult the special ops and CIA had it over there - not only do they have to worry about combat - but they have to keep a large and diverse cast of characters straight, each with their own interests and agendas!
In many ways this felt like a sequel to Charlie Wilson's War and in many ways it is. If you like military action, spy thrillers, or just want an overview and update on the war in Afghanistan, then I highly recommend Horse Soldiers. 』
