The only drawback that I ran into with this steamer is that I do not have a pot that it will fit securely over. A wok is recommended, but as I do not own one, I used a large pot with a handle located midway down the side of the pot. Despite this, however, the steamer still hung over too much and sat lopsided not making a full seal around the pot. To combat this I rotated the steamer every once in a while and steamed a little longer than recommended.
I would recommend this steamer to anyone, but the bottom edge is a bit too long to fit nicely with any of my cookware.』
(better than Norpro; would recommend) 『I like Chinese cooking and I actually own Norpro Deluxe 3-Piece Bamboo Steamer Set for five years prior to adding this newer bamboo steamer to my kitchen, courtesy of the Amazon Vine program. While you are right to think nothing can go wrong in a low-tech item like a bamboo steamer, there are actually a few things that may affect your purchase decision.
First is the size. The diameter of this steamer is 10 inch and is quite generous. Make sure you have a stockpot that is wide enough (11in) and tall enough (you need at least 8in in). The steamer itself is only six and a quarter inch high, but since you don't want water to touch the bottom of it during steaming, you need to raise it an inch or two above the bottom of the stockpot using a rack.
Second is the construction quality. I am happy to report that this is a high quality item. Kudos to Amazon for coming up with this. In comparison to the Norpro steamer, I find this one MUCH sturdier. In fact, I don't think anyone will pick the other if the two were compared in person. Things like Chinese steam cake can get heavy. While I don't think my old one will break under the weight too easily, there is no reason to want a light bamboo steamer.
Third is the lid of the steamer. One critical feature of a bamboo steamer is to avoid condensation dripping back into the food because it would dilute the taste. Bamboo is usually quite good at this BUT your stockpot lid may not. In other words, the bamboo steamer's lid must shield the water dripping down from the lid of the stockpot. This steamer's lid works well in this regard because it is tightly weaved and so any water dripped on top of it will get dispersed into the weaving. Again, a good design.
The bottom line is I consider this a better buy. Congrads to Amazon for coming up with this quality item at a competitive price.』
(Decent steamer) 『Before I got this steamer, I used to use a folding stainless steel one. the Pinzon is a marked improvement over that. It's considerably larger, and keeps the food farther above the boiling water. Of course, having two levels is convenient too. I've used it a few times, and it's holding up well. Its construction seems superior to the very cheap ones you can find in any discount store. I can't say anything about long-term longevity, but so far so good. Fits well on a 12-inch pan with sloping sides. I've not had the splinter problems some other reviewers mentioned. As for technique, I think the instructions are a little timid - steaming food on a plate, as they recommend, results in a water-logged dish, especially if you're steaming fish. Placing the food on a piece of lettuce gives far better results.』
(First time user) 『I purchased this steamer because I have been pleased with the Pinzon product and trusted this would be constructed well. This classic bamboo steamer is the real thing I see my favorite dim sum served in at Lu Lu's. It has a handmade touch and securely assembled with bamboo pegs and bamboo lacing. There are no metal or plastic staples on the basket and best of all being a part of the grass family it is both a renewable and sustainable resource.
The next step for me in this discovery process was learning how to use it properly and maximize its functions. You can place the basket over boiling water for a steaming effect or place it directly in a wok of large skillet with water. I also loved the roominess of the basket. There was room on the bottom layer for a nice pink piece of salmon and I filled the top layer with bok choy and snap peas. One tip the chef made was to add to aromas to the water bath. Great idea!! No sooner did I do that that a chef on Iron Chef did a similar thing to draw out the flavors of the dish! I Along with steaming fish and vegetables it also is an attractive serving piece and fun to place on the counter and fill it with fruit. The basket can breathe and keeps direct sun light off the fruit or tomatoes while it ripens.
All in all a fun and inexpensive experience for me as I learn more about cooking different healthy ways. 』
(High quality. Modern contruction. Good Size) 『I have previously bought a very similar bamboo steamer set. It is the same size, two layers with a lid - the same as the Tom Douglas set. The diameter of these steamers at 10 inches are large enough to steam several Asian style buns, small dim sum dishes, smaller servings of fish, etc. Good enough for a 2-6 people, but it is sort of like preparing a grilled meal on a portable propane grill - Definitely doable, but you may have to prepare 2-3 separate loads of food instead of a one time deal and that can become frustrating.
My first set of bamboo steamers is far more traditional. The bottom consists of thin slivers of bamboo tied together with organic grass-like threads. It is very traditional, but after repeated use the threads will work loose, break, and eventually you need to replace the steamer.
This Tom Douglas steamer does not have this issue. Thick bamboo sticks are interconnected with large cut out spaces, which is far more durable, but does not interfere with the primary purpose - to let steam pass between the pot and the one or multiple steam layers in use.
On thing to remember is a wok is preferable to use with these types of steamers. The curved bottom allows for a good amount of water, while the bamboo cooking rings rests on the sides of the wok, which is perfect for steaming. It would not work with standard sauce pans or cookware, since the steamers would need to rest on something to avoid direct water contact.
Overall a great product, built with quality. It beats my old set hand down and is a good buy. The great thing is my old set is also a 10" ring, so now I can steam 4 layers at a time, which is pretty nice.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Dont worth the money!) 『I got it like 2 weeks ago. When I carried the package I "knew" it wasn't good, it was to light. When I tried it started to move, and make A LOT of noise, more than a blender, after 4 minutes I turned it off and checked the potatoes, they weren't peeled at all and it leaves a really weird texture on it.
So you guys understand how it works imagine you take a potatoes and you rub it against the street or you throw it to a wall a dozen of times, its something like that.
Dont throw your money away with this item, better peel the potato with a knife or with a hand potato peeler a conventional one.
Thanks』
(Very nice to look at on counter. NO other use of value. L.H. Wheatland, Ca.) 『THIS PEEL-A-MEAL ELECTRIC PEELER, REALLY LOOKS NICE...BUT IT IS NOT WORTH THE MONEY OR TIME TO USE IT. IT JUST DOSE NOT WORK WELL ENOUGH OR EASY ENOUGH TO BOTHER WITH MY HEALTH ISSUES.』
(Do not buy!!!) 『This will bruise any apples and really does not work well. By the time you clean it up you did not save any time using it. It will be on my next garage sale!!』
(I WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED THIS ITEM) 『Its not great and its not terrible so I would like to give it 2-1/2 stars, but Amazon does not provide for 1/2 stars. It is very noisy, but I can deal with that for a few minutes. It cannot handle whole potatoes - even medium size ones jam it up. I had to cut them in half. It took 3 loads to do 2 pounds of medium size potatoes. Perhaps if you use "new" potatoes, you may not have to cut them in half. The potatoes come out as little white "balls" - you lose a lot of the potato. It does beat hand peeling. However, I discovered that if you boil the potatoes with skin on, the skin peels off very easily with your fingers. A good thing about the machine is that it does clean up easily. However, if I had known all this , I probably would not have bought it.』
(POTATO PEELER) 『I was disappointed with this product. It kept jamming up until I cut the potatoes in half. It took a long time to peel them and I had to keep taking the blade out and rinsing it off because it filled up.』 『The Presto 02905 Electric Peeler is a fast, easy way to peel potatoes, carrots, apples, and more. This unit can handle up to two pounds in a matter of minutes. Simply put the food into the bowl, snap on the cover, and turn on the power; the peeler does the rest. A see-through cover allows you to watch the process, and the bowl and peeling disc are removable and dishwasher-safe. This unit features built-in cord storage inside the base and comes complete with a salad spinner attachment. 120 volts AC.』

It gives you a 'near to vinyl' quality soundspace. I have since been using this CD for my audiophile referencing of speakers and CD players.
The title number 'Making Music' is our family favourite. Best listened during sunset. I automatically see my better half snuggle next to me to have a listen.
Highly recommended if you love Shakti.』
(Not always profound, but great fun) 『I love this album, though other reviewers are perfectly right to point out the occasional shallow spots and sometimes over-prominent sax (why do so many of Garbarek's collaborations have this fault?). I don't think these musicians were always aiming for profundity in these sessions. The title I think is meant to be taken literally: these guys were simply making music. But it is great fun all the way through.
All the performers are highly prolific, amazingly versatile and deeply experienced collaborators. Getting them together was perhaps more of a good marketing idea than the result of any great meeting of musical minds, but the result is consistently more stimulating than any Kenny G. recording that I know.
There are also moments of great beauty, especially those produced by Hariprasad Chaurasia and Jan Garbarek. Garbarek's sax often takes up not only Indian melodies, but also mimics the intonations of Indian instruments.
Musical pleasure for almost every ear, made by great musicians having fun together.』
(East Meets West) 『East Indian music with a couple of jazz songs included.
"Making Music" (the first song) is a 12-minute somewhat somber interplay between the four musicians, "Water Girl" is a percussive worldbeat-type song featuring the tabla, "Toni" is an "ECM-jazz" ballad featuring saxophone (the tone is excellent), "Sunjog" is rhythmic jazz with each instrument entering in unison, "You and Me" is an energetic tabla-guitar interplay and a great way to end the album, and "Sabah" is another song which leans toward jazz. "Zakir" has some guitar later joined by some squeeling sax near the end of the song. "Anisa" is a 3-minute guitar solo followed by 6 minutes of solo tabla and voice.
』
(Chaurasia is GODLY) 『Most of the tracks are really, really good....my special words are about 'Sunjog'. It starts with a rather unconventional note from Garbarek...Pardon my ignorance (if any) but I was not able to conclude if it is incorrect mixing or playing or a deliberately inserted 'noise' to make the oncoming note from Chaurasia, nothing but GODLY. I should admit that the first times I listened to it, the start of flute will almost bring a drop of tears in my eyes.
Must buy for anybody who wants to try Zakir, John and for anybody who wants to listen to any music of Zakir and John together, but outside of Shakti.』
(Good but not great East-West fusion) 『I have to agree with the other reviewers about the volume level of Garbarek. He's just too hot in the mix. It's somewhat jarring to my senses whenever he plays.
This is unfortunate, because"Making Music"is otherwise a nice fusion of East&West. With players of this quality, it'd be hard for them to produce anything without musical worth.
This is overall a mellow excursion, maybe a bit too New Agey for my tastes. At points, such as during the track"Zakir", things almost start to sound Kenny G-ish.
I would definitely recommend looking elsewhere for all but the biggest fans of this style of music.』
『It's a simple enough concept: gather four great musicians--percussionist Zaikir Hussain, flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia, guitarist John McLaughlin, and saxophonist Jan Garbarek--into a studio, push "record," and see what happens. In the case ofMaking Music, quite a bit does happen. The meditative flute work of Chaurasia gives this disc a much deserved Indian feel, Garbarek's soaring horn lines add plenty of soul, and the interplay between McLaughlin and Hussain forms a rich tapestry of sounds. Soothing and soaring, here's an example of genre-fusing at its finest.--Jason Verlinde』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (A Frightening Beauty) 『When I first heard this I had played it on cassette in my home, and was listening to it while performing some chores around the house. Moments later, I was staring in utter disbelief at the speakers, wondering if my ears had somehow tuned in to some celestial event.』
(The Sound!) 『In addition to the kudos mentioned by others, I would only point out the Hugeness of the drone sound from the tamboura. The credits list a keyboard as well, which I don't hear; maybe it contributes to the drone as well. Enrapturing virtuoso performances from all; beautiful variety between the voice and violin leading the way; typically brillian rhythm from Zakir Hussain and Vikku Vinayakram; and that sound! I've never heard a drone so huge in Indian music, and while I love the traditionally small tamboura sound too, this is glorious.』
(Exulted music by Shankar.) 『A full length traditional Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi composition in Raga Kapi set to Seethalakshmi Tala (a 6 3/4 rythmic cycle of beats indited by Shankar and named after his mother!), is a great piece of music to hear. Special word has to be mentioned about Ganam Rao and Shankar who have done the vocals for this album. Once again Shankar reveals the variation and the depth of his voice. Kudos to Zakir and Vikku for the brilliant accompaniment. 'One more gem from Shankar' is what I thought when I heard this music for the first time.』
(Divine, Absolutely So) 『Do not miss this album if you are a fan of Shankar's. Glorious beats, and some unbelievable music. So divine, you would find it hard to believe it didn't come from heaven, but from a few strings and a bow.』
(INTRIGUING, MINDGLOWING SOUND EFFECT....EXCELLENT.) 『I LOVED IT, EXCELLENT COMPOSITION, VERY WELL PUT...ONE OF HIS BEST WORK, ECLECTIC. REZA,FLORIDA.』

Intense Indian melding of these two giants with their instruments stands as some of the most personal, committed, musically brilliant Ragas for people who would not know better. Many western distributed recordings of this nature smack of exploitation, even if the playing is incredible. Consisting of one (relatively) brief intro followed by the epic 40 minute sonic mediation, Duet will certainly not be for casual music listeners but certainly will be for those who are dying to casually get into virtuoso eastern flair without falling victim to a cheapening imported sentiment that mars so much of it's kind.』
(A gem not to be missed by any) 『When I first heard about this record, I couldn't wait to hear it. Ali Akbar Khan and L. Subramaniam are 2 of my very favorite musicians. Sarod and Carnatic violin are 2 of my favorite instruments. Also, Zakir Hussain accomapanies them on tabla. There is Mridangam on there 2 but not sure who. This cd did not let me down at all. It is great. The maestros all give an outstanding performance. I listen to alot of different kinds of music and own alot of different cd's. This is in the top 5 for sure. Buy it.』
(a musical wonder) 『a wonderful collaboration, where the feminine sways of the soaring violin are magestically punctuated by Ali AkBar Khan's speach on the sarod. A must-have for classical indian music lovers and highly recommended for open minds&ears.』
(Excellent Violin/Sarod Ragas !!!) 『this CD is well worth listening to w/ Maestros Subramaniam&Kahn&Zakir Hussain playing master-fully&recorded Live a few years ago... not the best recording quality BUT the playing is first rate&very inspiring... if you enjoy the original Shakti CDs; you should enjoy this one...』
(Two great musicians jam together) 『Ali Akbar Khan and L. Subramaniam are acknowledged masters of their respective instruments, and their mastery can clearly be felt in this fine live performance of the early-morning rag Sindhi Bhairavi.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Great Thai Moive) 『I was not expecting the x rated scenes that were in this movie, but they were done in way that enhanced the movie. This is a excelent movie that I have watched three times. I plan to watch it many more times.』
(A Visually Stunning, Bold, and Intensely Moving Film) 『JAN DARA is one of those rare films that succeeds on many levels: the story as adapted from a famous Thai novel 'The Story of Jan Dara' by Utsana Phleungtham is one of intrigue and exploration of lust, revenge, and thwarted passion; the cinematography by Nattawut Kittikhun is incredibly atmospheric while at the same time pausing for some of the most beautiful studies of nature on film; the musical score by Chartchai Pongprapapan and Pakawat Waiwitaya mixes the exotic pentatonic Oriental melodies with quaint excerpts from early recordings of Richard Strauss and Puccini operas; the direction by Nonzee Nimibutr is so sensuously elegant that this film firmly establishes him as an important figure in international filmmaking.
Simply stated, the story is about Jan Dara, the son of a woman who died giving birth to him, his life as an abused and unwanted child in the house of his 'father' spent searching for the love of his lost mother, his first encounters with passion and love, his adaptation to the realities of surviving in a family fraught with conflicts and bizarrely tangled interrelationships, and the disillusionment that comes with the discovery of his true family history and how the way his life comes full circle. It is a period piece and includes the outside effects of WW II in an otherwise sequestered house of strange isolation.
While JAN DARA includes many sensuous scenes (the 'first memory' of Jan Dara is watching his 'father' in an indiscretion with his beloved aunt), these scenes are photographed so sensitively that they become studies like Kama Sutra paintings rather than being vulgar. The story makes many flashbacks and flashforwards and keeping the various actors at the different ages of these sequences straight can be problematic. The cast is uniformly excellent and credible, even when they may be too evil to watch!
Here is an example of Oriental films that don't rely on choreographic martial arts to sustain interest. In that way it is similar to the beautiful SPRING, SUMMER, AUTUMN, WINTER, SPRING, and for those who enjoy the subtle arts of Asia this film is a must. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, May 05』
(If you enjoy The Last Emperor, you will enjoy Jan Dara too!) 『I should start out by telling you what not to expect. The front cover might lead you to assume that Jan Dara is going to be a sexy love story. You will be partially correct with that assumption because there is a lot of sex in Jan Dara, from beginning to end, and there is also a love story in it. However, the love story is a very small part of the plot and the sex scenes are often disturbing instead of erotic. Essentially, the movie is about a boy (Jan Dara) raised in his resentful stepfather's home, with tensions heightened because Jan Dara's mother died giving birth to him. People are sometimes in the mood for a tragic movie or play and Jan Dara will certainly satisfy that mood. It even has a shocking ending, which I won't give away other than to mention that it gives teasers to the ending throughout the movie. I am giving it five stars because it is a very well made movie and it does give a glimpse at what Thai culture may have been like for some people fifty to seventy-five years ago. Although Jan Dara is a completely different movie from The Last Emperor that is the closest film that I can think of to compare it to. If you enjoy The Last Emperor, you will very likely enjoy Jan Dara too.』 『Enter the exotic and haunting world of JAN DARA; a saga of sex, guilt, retribution and love set in the moody and turbulent Thailand of the 1930s. Jan Dara, a young Thai man whose earliest memories recall his father having sex with his childhood nanny. Jan Dara's mother dies after giving birth to him. Eventually he's disowned by his father which brands him as a bastard in the Thai culture. Years later Jan Dara returns to see revenge by outdoing his father's sexual conquests. Based on one of the most acclaimed Thai novels of the 20th century and directed by one of Thai cinema's most successful and accomplished directors Nonzee Nimibutr (NANG NAK and BAYTONG). *** THAI and CHINESE LANGUAGES *** OPTIONAL ENGLISH and KOREAN SUBTITLES ***』

(They should have hired writers and animators) 『I want 2 hours of my life back..(well an hour because I couldn't watch the rest of this terrible human mistake). It is written, without any focus. Half the time it wants to be a comedy, and the rest of the time it wants to be social commentary. One can only assume the topic of the Manson family was a weak attempt to be cool. The subject matter is created with less edge or controversy than a mini van commercial. The most unbearable part were retarded amount of sex jokes that come out of no where. "Hey how's it goin Billy?"... "That huge sperm shooting cock in my mouth is great" said Billy. I hate myself for having watched as much of this hackneyed trash as I did. I would rather be burned with cigarettes than watch this again. At least burning myself would make me feel like I was being productive with my time.』
(Depraved, Shameless, Funny) 『I swear, I thought I could never be shocked by a comedy! I consider myself jaded when it comes to gross out humor, but Live Freaky Die Freaky really tops the charts. I can appreciate the audacity of a Manson musical, and I can appreciate a humorous take on tragedy, but this movie often goes to far. It's not just the graphic language, or "un-simulated puppet sex", or the fact that a friend of Roman Polanski voices Sharon Tate's killer. It's that all these things appear in the same movie!
For that, for offending even me, this film automatically gets 4 stars! If the production values were any better this movie would get 5, but that's how it is. Either way, I must say I really liked Billy Joe's version of Mechanical Man...』
(the most dissapointing movie I have seen) 『to start off, I love the musicians involved with this movie. they are all really creative and I love the material. Sadly enough none of them can act, and who ever wrote this wrote a better 60 synopsis for the trailer, than the whole movie.

Antonio Giustozzi gathers a renowned cast of journalists, experts, and academics to answer the most pressing questions regarding the Taliban today. Each contributor possesses extensive knowledge of the insurgency's latest developments, decoding its structure and organization as it operates within specific regions and provinces. They analyze the new Taliban as it expands, from the mature south, where they hold sway, to the southeast, where they struggle to penetrate, from the west and northeast, now in the initial stages of infiltration, to the provinces surrounding Kabul, which have been unexpectedly and quickly occupied.
Along with these advances, contributors review current theories for defeating the strategies and propaganda of the new Taliban. Issues covered include the strengths and weaknesses of the organization; the nature of its networks and whether they are based on traditional ties of kin and ethnicity or more institutional chains of command; its success at maintaining unity, even when faced with attrition in the field; the consequences of unruly leaders and conflicts over rule; the group's exploitation of the opium trade; the factors that have contributed to a resurgence in Kabul; and the extent to which Taliban leaders have imposed strategy among the rank and file, despite immense geographical challenges and poorly functioning communication systems.
Guided by the wisdom and expertise of a celebrated, bestselling author,Decoding the New Talibanis a critical tool for comprehending this dangerously chimerical, cleverly resurgent threat.

(DK Travel Guide to India) 『It was everything I wanted. This is the second time I have done this review.』
(Great for armchair travelers but that's about it) 『I have traveled through India several times for several months each time, and this winter I will be meeting my parents there and taking them on tour across the country. I always rely on the latest edition of my trusty Lonely Planet (LP) guide which, though low on frills, can get me to any destination in the country, find a place to stay and get safely fed. That's not to say LP is exhaustive, but it definitely covers the bases.
My mother is fond of Eyewitness travel guides, so she bought it in anticipation of the trip. I had lent her my LP and asked for it back to start working out our travel details, but got the Eyewitness instead, which is just a hair shy of completely useless for practical travel. As advertised it is filled with 3-D diagrams and color photos of famous sites, which are well-rendered and gorgeous, but I am taking my parents to these sites so they can see them in 3-D themselves! Instead of filling pages with useful info like how to get from place to place, this thing is a picture book for people who dream of going to India but probably will never make it. I guess it's a substitute for the real thing, but only if the closest you'll get to India is this book and an armchair.
This guide gets no stars on the practical level: it is an extremely bad idea to travel to India with this as your only guide. If someone else will do all the guiding for you and all you have to do is occasionally step off the AC bus to wade through the walas, the 3-D layouts may just help you navigate sites (as if the signs and actual monuments won't). I won't tell my mom not to bring it, but I definitely won't be carrying it for her.』
(fantastic) 『I bought this guide for my husband as it is his dream to go to India. We have other DK books and they are great. We love this guide and will be buying more of it's type in the future for sure.』
(Too General) 『I think it would be best to use this book only when you are chosing where you want to go in India. It's very broad and has only 10 - 20 pages for each state, and some of the major cities. I went to only 6 cities while I was in country so I didn't need at least 80% of it. It was very frustrating to try to plan out sightseeing the night before because there just wasn't enough information and I wondered what I was missing. It was also very heavy - I almost left it behind a few times because I knew it wouldn't be of much use at my next stop! Your travel guide should not feel so expendable.
It does have very beautiful pictures and some good advice but all in all I think you would do better with something more detailed that concentrates on the specific area you are travelling to. Just peruse this one at the bookstore, get some ideas, then put it back on the shelf!! Sorry Eyewitness Travel!』 『The guides that show you what the others only tell you.

Book Report by Jaden Ficklin
How I rate this book:
I rate it a 10 out of a 10 because it's one of the best books I've read in the whole entire world!
A single shard of What? Pottery, but not just any pottery, this is ancient Celadon artwork
Who? Tree ear: is a 12 year old orphan Crane Man: is an old, homeless man who takes care of Tree Ear Min: is a grumpy but very good pottery maker Min's wife: is a very nice woman
When? 1100 A.D. (about 900 years ago)
Where? Ch'ulp'o, Korea
Why? To let us know about the people who started Celadon pottery
Tree Ear has to eat garbage scraps and grass because he is an orphan and the only one taking care of him is Crane Man who is homeless. They live under a bridge.
One day, when Tree Ear is looking for food, he sees a potter named Min turning a lump of clay into an awesome vase on a spinning wheel. He wants to do it too, bad!
So he starts working for Min for free, hoping to learn how to sculpt.
After a year, the King's emissary comes, looking for the best in the kingdom. He likes Min's works, so he asks him to send some of his best pottery to Songdo, the capitol city.
But Min is too old to go, so Tree Ear volunteers to take it for him.
Then Tree Ear asks Min if he'll show him how to make pottery. Min says no. Only my son can, and my son has died.
But Tree Ear decides to still take Min's pottery to Songdo, because Min's wife has been so nice to him.
Songdo is a super long ways away. Crane Man tells him about this cool cliff on the way. When Tree Ear goes, he stops by the cliff to see it. Two robbers come up. They grab Tree Ear, steal his money and throw Min's pots over the cliff. They both shattered.
All Tree Ear finds is a single shard. What will Tree Ear do to show Min's pottery to the Emissary? You'll have to read this yourself to find out what a great book this is.

(References to suicide&concubines) 『I love this book, and plan to read it aloud to my children. However, I strongly believe that this book should NOT be read by children and teens apart from adult guidance. There is a reference to concubines choosing to leap to their deaths off of a cliff rather than be taken prisoner. These suicides are looked upon by other characters in the story as heroic. However, the main character comes to the conclusion that at times, (but not always), it is more courageous to live than to choose to leap to your death. I'm uncomfortable with anything that might give young people the idea that suicide is sometimes an acceptable option. I think this question should be reserved for adult literature.』
(Beautiful) 『This story is simple and a smooth read. I wanted to preview this book before my children read it...A Single Shard was beautiful, with the rising of odds against a boy, his deep effort of respect to his elders, eagerness to learn, his struggle to prove himself, persevere, and eventually triumph....all because he tried to do the right thing in his situation. I didn't even mind the quick resolution given at the end of the book, because everything leading up to it was so riddled with struggle, I needed the closure! The author's notes at the end of the book are even worth reading...giving her studies on the topic and some historical facts to back up the story. This is on the top of the book list for my children.』
(fascinating tale) 『I read this story to my daughter when she was 6, 8, and now she is reading it for herself when she is 10. The story is vivid and heartfelt. Linda Sue Park has created a world that is easy to get drawn into. I feel like I know Tree-ear, Crane-man, and Min. Park's writing style is very easy to read and clear throughout. The lifelike imagery makes you forget that you're reading a book and lets you feel as though you are in the action. The plot moves quickly also and never lets you hang in mid air, which is good when you are reading to a young person. And now that my daughter is reading it herself, it holds her attention, which is difficult to do.』 『Tree-ear is an orphan boy in a 12th-century Korean pottersâ village. For a long time he is content living with Crane-man under a bridge barely surviving on scraps of food. All that changes when he sees master potter Min making his beautiful pottery. Tree-ear sneaks back to Minâs workplace and dreams of creating his own pots someday. When he accidentally breaks a pot, he must work for the master to pay for the damage. Though the work is long and hard, Tree-ear is eager to learn. Then he is sent to the Kingâs Court to show the masterâs pottery. Little does Tree-ear know that this difficult and dangerous journey will change his lifeforever.』
