(nice product, bargain price)
『I shopped for several weeks before purchasing this fire bowl from Target. While not as glitzy or heavy as some others, it gives you everything you need, at the lowest price I could find. Have enjoyed nice "campfires" sitting on the patio on cool Minnesota evenings. Logs burn nicely, down to great marshmallow-roasting coals. With vinyl cover, I can just leave it out in a corner.

The report of difficult assembly by another reviewer puzzles me. I'm not very handy, but had no difficulty putting it together. Looking over the instructions is a good idea.』

(Wouldn't assemble; wouldn't accept return)
『I purchased this firebowl, and upon trying to assemble the screws instantly were stripped by the included allen wrench. When I tried to return it, they said they wouldn't accept the return. I now have a rather expensive piece of junk. Do not purchase this -- it's trash and the manufacturer will not stand behind it!』

(Great firepit....)
『Very nice, removable bowl, even comes with a nylon waterproof cover. What more could you ask for? Looks good too...』

(wonderful gift)
『This was a purchase for my son and his wife-they just love it. They live in a climate that is cool at night but not usually freezing and they spend alot of time on their deck at night. This is just perfect!!』

(Disappointing)
『As a souvenir for folks who have just seen the newest BDSS show, I imagine Babelesque is sufficient. But as a dancer, I often turn to the Superstars CDs for new music to use in performance. This CD is disappointing in that respect.

The opening track is a lovely piece by Dinletir but I imagine it will suffer from overexposure in the dance community quickly, as his previous piece, "Entrance of the Stars", has.

The next THREE tracks are all from one source album: _Asena_. It's a great album for sure, but to fill three tracks with material from one source seems like padding. One of those tracks, "Warda", has already been featured on BDSS I, which just adds insult to injury. "El Kalaw (sic) ala Meen", by Saad, also appears on a previous BDSS compilation.

Next is "Desert Fish" from Oojami's _Bellydance Breakbeats_. The source album was released in 2002, so it's a safe bet many dancers who are into BDSS may already own it.

The remaining tracks run the gamut from industrial to Tahitian, with only one ("Wadah" by Latifa) falling squarely into the Arab pop genre. If you don't own much "bellydance" music, want to stretch your dance parameters a bit, or want to relive a BDSS performance, this album is a good listen -- but if you're looking for new music to use in straight performance, you'd be better off looking elsewhere. Like the biblical tower that shares its name, "Babelesque" seems to be lost in translation.』

(Bellydance with something else)
『This CD is like the 2007 Babelesque tour. A lot of bellydance, mostly done to Arabic pop, but with some hip-hop and island flavor tossed in. Then there's the Pentaphobe track which is for the Tribal number. For other Tribal numbers from the show, the Serpent Rouge CD has a couple of them, FYI. This CD isn't bad, I enjoy the music. A couple of the tracks I already have from Bellydance Superstars compilations, so for that I was a bit disappointed that they'd include retreads. But it's got some decent, upbeat, energetic poppy music you'd want to bellydance if you prefer that to more traditional stuff. A good variety. It's basically a soundtrack, not a complete one, from the show I went to, of the tour, but a nice memento.』

『This is an excellent example of Nubian music, El Din is a master. I remember this album from when it first came out, my dad bought it and it soon became a favorite of our family. I am pleased to re-discover this treasure as an adult.』

(A fine work~)
『The artist is a rare and natural genius.』

(Feels like the old days of Kush)
『Nubians in Egypt are know rejuvenating their centuries old culture that is older than egypt aka Kemet. Many people donot know the nubians even exist any more, but they still continue like the fellahin in Southern Egypt their ancient lifestyle. I just love the way Hamaza combines the enchanting sounds of the OUD,and breathes life into the ancient strings. The OUD is not a arab instrument, but in fact a instrument that goes back to the period of the Old Kingdom. The arabs discovered of course at about the same time the Phophet muhammed died and the arabs started to bring islam to the rest of the world through the sword. I wish though that Hamaza would bring the kissar into more focus because it is a beautiful nubian instrument.

Buy this album because it is a document of a culture that once was,but know can only be seen in museums and exhibitons.』

(Bamboo Eloquence)
『Many recordings of Japanese shaukaushi bamboo flute are available; thus I was surprised to find Masayuki Koga's album Eastwind still being produced. But then, there is a very good reason: it is a great album of both traditional and his own contemporary pieces. One must be highly talented and inventive to do both well; Koga is a master. The sound quality of the album, a remastered anthology of his LPs, is excellent, owing to the original studio engineering and the sense of chamber depth. The use of rice paper in package design is a nice touch. The classic pieces--Distant Cry of Deer, Sashi no Kyolu, Rokudan, and Zangetsu--are unforgiving; any flaw in breathing technique, sensitivity, and rhythmic flow is readily apparent. Koga, who was trained in both the Kinko and Tozan schools of shakuhashi, performs these works in grand style. His own works maintain the traditional sound but with modern flair in phrasing. One track is a duet with koto. Such slow music produces timelessness, tranquility, and awareness. Koga is a musical sorcerer.』

(Like no other Shakuhachi)
『Masayuki Koga's powerful shakuhachi sounds will bring you face to face with your unadorned true self. They are nature made manifest in all it's complete force and abundance. At times sweet and serene, at other times like a gale blowing right through you. Koga stands out above all the masters, incorporating and transcending the traditional. This is the first and last in Shakuhachi music--the real thing.』
Shakuhachimaster,Masayuki Koga, is a fascinating Renaissance man: a master musician, composer, producer and engineer, trained in law, with a penchant for philosophy. His music reflects those many aspects of his personality and his skills.

Born in Japan at the height of World War II, Koga followed his father's footsteps in learning to play theshakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute that is associated with Zen Buddhism. Although secular music has been performed on theshakuhachifor a hundred years now, it still retains its distinctly Zen aesthetic. It is capable of very subtle tonal variations and expressive nuances, all of which Koga explores with his full spirit, emotion and intellect.

Koga's unique contribution has been to expandshakuhachimusic, playing not only the traditional music of Japan, but blending it with Western influences. His musical training was traditional, receiving his master-teacher degree from the Tozan school. Subsequently, Koga became the youngest member of the award-winning Ensemble Nipponia.

In his mid-twenties, Koga withdrew from the orchestra to broaden his musical horizons, experimenting with jazz and free form styles. Koga moved to the United States in 1972, continuing to perform widely. To further spread the understanding of his tradition in the West, Koga founded the Japanese Music Institute of America.

Eastwind: Japanese Shakuhachi Musicis undoubtedly an impressive production. The packaging includes a stunning rice paper booklet. The selections are carefully chosen titles from three of Koga's previous releases,Beyond Time and Space,The Distant Cry of DeerandMoon at Dawn, a perfect compilation for the audiophile interested inshakuhachimusic.

Masayuki Koga is a profoundly talented artist, devoted to his instrument. "The quality of your life is reflected in the quality of your sound. I can sometimes fool myself, but I can never fool the sound. I am theshakuhachiand theshakuhachiis me."』

『Directed by V.I. PUDOVKIN. Here is Pudovkins epic motion picture about one mans political and social enlightenment during a time of violence and turmoil in his land. The year is 1920, the setting Soviet Central Asia (where Podovkin shot the film on location): a vast, undeveloped wilderness of mountains and plains. After an argument with a conniving American fur trader - whos a predictably outlandish caricature of a greedy, heartless capitalist a young, obscure Mongolian trapper is forced to flee his home. He joins Soviet partisans fighting for their liberation and is eventually captured and ordered shot by interventionist forces. However, a general uncovers an amulet from among the trappers possessions - the contents of which alters his fate, for it identifies him as a direct descendant of Ghenghis Khan. Because the name of Khan is still powerful among the Mongols, the trapper is set up as a puppet ruler of his country. How he ultimately responds to those who will manipulate him is conveyed by Pudovkin in a magnificently staged and photographed finale. This trapper is a typical Pudovkin hero: hes an individual, an idealized personality, who in his everyday struggle for survival symbolized the oppression of the masses. Storm Over Asia (which is also, appropriately, known as "The Heir To Chenghis Khan") is almost documentary-like in feel, with Pudovkin weaving a spellbinding drama in which characterization and narrative are expertly utilized to both unravel the story and bring home the revolutionary message. Pudovkin is also one of the cinemas key theorists with regard to the effective utilization of film editing. One can understand why, after observing how artfully he connects his various pieces of film - often in a dazzling, rapid-fire manner - to obtain a cohesive, stunningly visual finished product. Titles in English.Silent film with original organ score, correct projection speed. 149 minutes.』

(A Glorious Dose of Culture!)
『After being impressed by some of Director Pudovkin's earlier films, I was curious to see "Storm over Asia" which is billed as 'Pudovkin's Masterpiece'- and I couldn't agree more! Unlike the other films I'd seen (End of St Petersburg, Chess Fever) this grand epic takes us to remote Mongolia for a real dose of authentic culture, complete with genuine Mongolians, their traditional homes, a lama and local Buddhist temple ceremonies. Excellent photography and attention to details already makes the cultural aspect a most interesting and exciting experience for the armchair traveller and dreamer of exotic places. Picture quality throughout is very good, and the music is outstanding, being an original score by Timothy Brock incorporating perfectly-suited Russian and Mongolian melodies and sounds. For the Buddhist temple ceremony even authentic instruments must have been used to replicate the music played on such occasions, making the cultural experience more than merely visual. The story itself blends fact with fiction, highlighting the plight of the Mongolian tribesmen who live a simple life, and are exploited by foreigners who want to profit from the fur trade. The focus is on one Mongolian who resists the exploitation, then by a twist of fate becomes the pawn for British troops in the region who want to use him to gain more control over the Mongolian natives. Politics and cultural identity make the plot, but a large part of the film's success is no doubt due to Pudovkin's skill in imagery and depicting emotions and drama with poignant images. An excellent film in itself, enhanced even more by its authentic filming location in Mongolia and genuine cultural experience.』

(Incredible)
『I can't really add much to the only other review, but I, too, find it unfortunate that this film and much of Pudovkin's work has been largely made invisible due to the glare of Eisenstein (or if you're into cultural studies during the New Economic Policy, Protazanov and the other 'commercial' directors at Mezhrabprom-Rus). While this film represents Pudovkin at his peak, awash as it is in ethnographic detail, a real human story (instead of Eisenstein's cardboard cutouts), and the completely sublime use of his trademark 'bricking' montage, his other films (especially less famous ones like 'Chess Fever' and 'Deserter') deserve a look, too.』

(Dazzling editing in powerful Soviet masterpiece)
『Storm Over Asia/The Heir to Genghis Khan is one of those titles frequently seen in film history books but rarely seen on a screen. Good to have it at last, then, because it's one of the best films to come out of the Soviet 1920s-- a work of rat-a-tat editing on a par with Gance's Napoleon and an example of slowly-smoldering drama finally delivering with a vengeful wallop worthy of The Godfather. Pudovkin consistently displayed the human touch that colleagues such as Eisenstein and Dovzhenko lacked, and the story of a Mongolian peasant who is used as a puppet ruler by the British until he finally unleashes the force of his people upon them is gripping throughout. In short, a masterpiece that is also a cracking good movie.』
『The last of the three great films that V.I. Pudovkin directed in the 1920s,Storm over Asia(1928) is an acknowledged classic of Soviet silent cinema. Filmed largely on location in Mongolia, the film has an authentic documentary feel, though the story is a stirring melodrama, about a young fur trapper who is mistreated by the occupying forces in the civil war and becomes a leader of the partisans. Pudovkin enjoys caricaturing the foreign (British) troops and the medieval rituals of a Buddhist temple, but it's out on the steppes that he really comes into his own, with panoramic shots of the vast landscapes. Together withMother(1926) andThe End of St. Petersburg(1927),Storm over Asia(also known asThe Heir to Genghis Khan) entitles Pudovkin to be ranked with Sergei Eisenstein and Dziga Vertov as a master of the Soviet montage style, which he expounded in his bookFilm Technique(1929).--Ed Buscombe
『Soviet master filmmaker V. I. Pudovkin's "Storm Over Asia" is a revolutionary masterpiece. Described by critics as an "epic poem," "Storm Over Asia" is set in the remote region of Mongolia where a young man is mistaken as a descendant of the great warrior Genghis Khan. When he is made a puppet ruler, he must decide where his loyalties lay.』

(Reflective, sweet, and formally audacious)
『I suppose BLISSFULLY YOURS could be summed up as a great film about nothing, or perhaps about life's tiny moments.

Filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul is one of the more interesting filmmakers working now, and though this extraordinary film may not be the best place to start with his work, it does sum up much of what he seems to go after.

Here, as with his other films, there's an interesting contrast between documentary starkness and a slight dreamlike quality, where everything almost seems real, but is just slightly out of synch with the normal intensity one would assume with normal life. The departure from absolute reality is accented here by the two-act structure (also seen in TROPICAL MALADY), with credits appearing 43 minutes into the film for the first time. The explicit fascinations with spontaneous creativity notable in MYSTERIOUS OBJECT AT NOON, and with memory and legend that shaped TROPICAL MALADY are more muted here, but still present: the romances (and joys and angst) depicted here seem drawn from recollections, or from the unconscious ways we work through problems and crises. And - whether seen in myth, or seen in romance - the omnipresence of human creativity is a quiet background force here as well.

A reflective tone is notable here - rather than use minimalism to examine the defects of modern society, Weerasethakul uses a calm and quiet tone to focus on joys taken for granted. I would note that the severe depression seen in one character is an indication that he's well aware of difficulties in the lives of ever-evolving characters, but he also maintains a strong respect for those same characters. So in a way this is a film spotligting those moments of peace we all seek - the variety we too often fail to grasp the significance of when we do find them.

This may be the best-looking of the Weerasethakul films I've seen, with a lush visual sensibility (even in the urban segments, set in and filmed in Khon Kaen) that presents both beauty and a kind of florid mysteriousness in great fashion.

In short, this is a film of grace and power.

(Sexy, Erotic, Sora Aoi is Such a Sight to Look at...But Falls Short as a REAL Japanese "Pink" Film)
『Japanese pink films have the uncanny ability to maintain "art house" themes while blending in pure weird exploitive elements. "Man, Woman and The Wall" is a Japanese pink film by Masashi Yamamoto and stars av-idol Sora Aoi. It is somewhat a light-hearted, kinder side of pink cinema, but it no less exploitive than others. Oh, I recently reviewed a "chick flick" so allow me to re-establish my twisted mind. Oh, this movie stars sexy av-idol Sora Aoi--so do I have your attention yet?

Ryo (Keita Ono) is a young magazine reporter who had just recently moved into a small apartment with thin walls. The walls are paper thin that he can hear almost everything that goes on in the next door apartment occupied by a beautiful young woman named Satsuki (Sora Aoi). Eavesdropping becomes a habit for Ryo that he can listen in to the details of his neighbor's life; her conversations, her phone calls, when she bathes, even her moans when she makes love to her boyfriend Yuta (Hiroto Kato). Ryo's fantasies escalate to love and passion. Meanwhile, Satsuki becomes increasingly afraid because of the bizarre phone calls she gets almost every night. Now when Ryo and Satsuki finally meet and begin a friendship, reality and fantasy intertwine, a simple harmless prank may just lead to the unthinkable.

Japanese cinema seem to look at kinky cinema and perversion in a very different way than us in the West. Ryo's behavior may seem downright creepy and unsettling to U.S. audiences, but director Yamamoto manages to make his character interesting and need I say it--a little humorously likable? Yamamoto goes to the mystery stalker angle that gives the viewer the idea that Ryo is the harmless kind, and that there are real perverts that may be hanging around in our everyday lives. Ryo is the lonely guy, and often he has nothing else to do after work, he fantasizes on his next door neighbor, as he sees her in a very different way and rather a little cartoonish as displayed by Ryo's fantasies about how her apartment looks. It was colorful and vibrant, while in real life Satsuki's apartment is simple and extremely drab.

Satsuki is your typical girl next door type, and while Ryo sees her as this voluptuous conquest, sex siren Sora Aoi plays her as one sympathetic character. Satsuki went through a lot of difficulties, she works two jobs and sends money to her family. The real Satsuki is so different from the "sex object" imagined by Ryo. It's a clever trick to expose the protagonist's perspective and to have reality crash down on his fantasies. Yamamoto wisely films some of the scenes of Ryo and Satsuki somewhat "imaginary and cartoon-like" as when they are seen in the same room ONLY in Ryo's mind. When the two actually meet, the shots are made in a minimalist manner, to emphasize realism.

Now, this is a pink film, so expect a good share of gratuitous sex scenes and even full frontal nudity. As with most pinku films, this movie blows the ones seen in late night cable out of the water. The usual "pink" sex scenes are on display, as Sora Aoi is seen in her birthday suit, as well as the infamous "pinku" style of hand inside the panties. The sex scenes are long, titillating and erotic, the Japanese knows their stuff when it comes to exploitive scenes and Sora Aoi being an av-actress, seems to be very comfortable with the scenes. The acting is rather uneven, and some parts of the acting is downright laughable, but Sora Aoi manages to steal the show with her acting skills as well as her outright sexiness.

"Man Woman and the Wall" is a story about love and lust, obsession and betrayal. I know that this type of film relies on titillation, shock, exploitive sex that leans on an "art house" theme, but this is where the film falls a little flat. The film is very predictable, while delightful in its simplicity on some aspects, the characters were too average to really make this film a memorable art house affair. The sex scenes are good but falls a little short to be truly remarkably exploitive. It had that "cute" tone to it, that fans who liked "A lonely Cow Weeps at Dawn" and "Sachiko Hanai" may find themselves looking for more. It is somewhat of a let down when it comes to provocative material.

The movie is good and passable but so far from becoming great. The film doesn't really manage to do anything different or inspiring in an art house theme, the film is a little flat. It's too cute to be real guilty pleasure and never manages to make me feel dirty; and for me a pink film should be able to shock with a good storyline.
Recommended! To Japanese pink film fans, a rental for everybody else. [3- Stars]

The TLA release is letterboxed at 1.78 ratio with 2.0 Dolby Digital Japanese track. Good picture but somewhat contains more grain on some scenes.

(Hearing and Desire)
『Kawase Ryo is a young wrier for a small publisher's magazine for which he mainly writes about what is going on in Japan's underworld. Not quite yet raking in the money, Ryo is happy enough that he has made enough money to rent an apartment that possesses his dream object: a bathtub. However, there is one thing with the apartment that would prove to be a bother to most: the walls are paper thin. Yet, this proves to be a boon for Ryo because he soon becomes obsessed with his neighbor, a young woman whose every move he can hear. Be it when she goes to the restroom, drinks a beer after a hot bath, or makes love to her boyfriend Yuta, Ryo listens and often masturbates to the images of his neighbor that float through his mind.

After a bit of snooping, Ryo learns that his neighbor is named Sugiura Satsuki, played by the former adult film star Aoi Sora, whose beauty and impressive "talents" drive Ryo wild and he soon goes to greater lengths so that he can spy on Satsuki such as sending her boxes addressed to himself so that she will have to bring them to his door and having a friend set up a better system so that he can listen to her clearer. It is at this point that Ryo learns that Satsuki is being stalked by someone else whose intentions are far less noble than Ryo's.

Man, Woman, and the Wall is a Pink Film, pinku eiga, whose main point is to titillate its audience. There are several scenes within the short film of Aoi Sora bathing and dressing and also a few scenes of intercourse with her boyfriend Yuta which can be quite heavy at times without showing any naughty bits. It would be easy to toss this film into a pile of other Japanese softcore porn titles, but there are some instances that makes Man, Woman, and the Wall stand out and that is the subject of voyeurism.

Oftentimes within the film, Ryo imagines himself within Satsuki's room watching her bathe, brush her teeth, and eat. In these early scenes, before Ryo actually knows what Satsuki's room looks like, he pictures it as being ultra girly with tons of stuffed animals and bright colors. Therefore, he is a bit surprised to discover that her room is quite plain. Ryo falls in "love" with the image of Satsuki that he has created within his own mind. An image that is so strong, the real beautiful and busty Satsuki does not live up to his expectations. This aspect makes the film an interesting critique of reality versus fantasy is a softcore film format.』

(A slightly perverted escapist film...)
『TLA is known for their variety of Japanese sex titles, but every once in awhile they manage to distribute a slightly above average demented title.

This one follows two young strangers that share the same apartment wall and how their lives become horribly intertwined. Our main male character discovers he can hear/eavesdrop on his new female (and beautiful) neighbor, played quite well by Japanese sex actress Aoi Sola, as she lives her day to day life. Instead of being mellow about it, he becomes obsessed, the kind of scary obsessed that involves sound equipment, schedules, charts, stalking, garbage searching, etc. Just when you think this film might go down the exploit lane, they twist it around and create some relationship building you do not see coming.

The acting is par, sometimes painfully forced, but once you see the end scene, it all played for a reason; that in the right people finding each other. Aoi, is a beautiful lady, and plays her difficult sexual role very convincingly, and would really be the only reason to watch this film. The DVD has a decent making of docu, and the transfer is interestingly a 1.77 ratio.』

(Try this tea if you don't like the taste of green tea)
『I have been drinking this tea for over 10 years now and it is some of the best green tea on the market. I had never liked the flavor of green tea but I was trying to drink it because of the health benefits but no matter how much I tried to drink regular green tea, I couldn't get it down because of the taste. So I decided to order this flavor along with their other green tea flavor, Ancient Cherry, and now I can finally drink and enjoy green tea. I steep the tea for 5 minutes for best flavor.

The citrus flavor is light enough so that you know it is flavored but not so much that it overwhelms the tea.

I recently bought some other brands of flavored green teas to try and save money but they just don't measure up to the Gevalia flavored green teas.

(One of the worst green teas I've ever tasted!)
『I had just recently ran out of green tea and the tea I usually get on amazon was no longer available, so I decided to give this one a try since it was 15% off with the gevalia discount + 15% off with subscribe and save. I made the tea and couldn't swallow more than one sip. It smelled horrible and had a really bad fake lemon-like taste. I forced myself to try it again, just in case it was just a one time thing, nope, still bad. I recommend you don't buy this tea, instead get yogi green tea. This green tea is bad quality and tastes atrocious. Plus, I can't return it to amazon since it is a grocery item...』

(Love this stuff!)
『My wife absolutely loves this tea, so we keep well-stocked! We used to hunt Asian markets looking for Old Town White Milk Tea, with mixed success, and are thrilled that you can now buy it on Amazon!』

(Weird, Bitter and Takes Some Getting Use To)
『In the pretty bag are little packets of powdered tea. It wasn't what I was expecting to be sure. At first I couldn't take the bitterness and the odd taste and the only person I knew who would take it off my hands lives in Asia. Needless to say I drank each serving myself. Mid-way the bag, I was used to it. Toward the end I liked it and here I am buying a new bag.

I usually have a cup of darjeeling in the morning, but I switched to Old Town White Milk. It did a good job of waking me up and keeping me alert while working. It's not like any tea I've ever had, but I've come to enjoy it. If you try it, consider yourself warned, it's not just a cup of tea with milk.』

(Yay!)
『This thing is the BEST packet milk tea on the market; a too little sweet, but thick and milky with the 'asian' flavour to it. I'm a Singaporean, so the company that manufactures this is from my hometown. Spent lots of precious luggage space dragging piles of this stuff to America and was running out, but now I am saved. :D Hooray!』

(A few short-comings, but provided what I expected)
『I am, at best, an amateur historian, so I didn't bring a deep knowledge of subject that some others do, and thus cannot speak to conflicting theories or anything like that. I was merely someone interested in learning about the central Eurasian region, particularly where it related to the more Classical period and earlier. This book goes well beyond that, of course, as it carries the story up to the modern day. While it wasn't my main intended focus, the latter chapters did help expand what I know about the development of the region in more recent times.

There were several really interesting discussions in the book. One of the most interesting, to my mind, was the idea that in developing a massive trade and exchange network the Scythians and related peoples of Central Eurasia may have helped facilitate the sudden blooming of Classical philosophical thinking.

Now, having said that, the book certainly does have its short-comings. Specifically, it suffers from a decided lack of visuals to help explain the movement of people and armies. There is a steady stream of people and place names, movements and conflicts, which I found very challenging to keep straight. The included maps on the insides of the book covers help a bit, but really only with place names.

The other issue I had was the rant the author goes on about Modernism in the latter part of the book. It starts off fine, as he keeps it clearly linked to the subject matter, but before long the readers finds himself in the middle of a discussion of the impact of Modernism on art and music. It doesn't last all that long, but it's enough to have you wondering if maybe some pages from an art history book got mixed in.

Overall, the book did what I expected of it - expanded my knowledge of this history of the Central Eurasian peoples.』

(Dreadful Book, I'm Returning It)
『This book lacks a soul. It is old fashioned history of the worst kind, dry factoids strung out one after the other. There is nothing about ethnography: who were some of these tribes? There is nothing about culture, aside from the poems that open most chapters. Nothing about practices: were they all male dominated? Was there no variation? I searched in vain to learn something about the culture, technological innovations, food, whatever that the steppe peoples brought to the lands they conquered or migrated into. Not there.

No one is fleshed out. NAmes parade thru the pages but you never learn any stories about them that make them come alive, only facts. I thought they stopped teaching history this way 20 years ago.

The cover art is the only illustration in the entire book. I suspect the author has never been to any of these places, but surely there are Getty images available for the sweep of the steppes, Samarkand, Urumchi, etc? In a book that deals with who conquered where, when, there is not a single map showing the sweep of empires as they moved across the steppes. Too challenging to do I reckon, but it makes the manuscript much poorer. This book reads more like an outline. Maybe someone who is a good writer will use it as a basis for a decent book on the topic. The Hittite stuff in the front you can get in many better written histories.』

(Updated synthesis)
『recounting the history of what the author terms 'Central Eurasian [henceforth CEA] Culture Complex,' which - geographically speaking - spread from Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula (i.e., Koguryo kingdoms) in the East to as far as the Pannon Plain/Carpathian Basin in the West, and in some respects even beyond those frontiers. One of the central themes connecting diverse peoples in this diachronic-synchronic/vertical-horizontal study is the presence of the oath-sworn guard corps (Latin 'comitatus') that gradually grew in number and formed the heart of CEA nations until the adoption of world religions in the Middle Ages (p. 15 passim). Maintaining the steady flow of luxury goods so as to reward their services played no small part as the raison d'etre for commerce along the Silk Road.

You can read about the war charioteer Hittites, Ashvins/Wu-sun-s, Mycaneans; the state foundation struggles regarding Scythians vs. Cimmerians, Hsiung-nu-s vs. Tokhars, Huns vs. Goths, Turks vs. Avars, Mongols vs. Jurchens; as well as about the Arab conquest in Central Asia, the Khazar kaganate, imperial Tibet, Uighurs, and sundry. By extending the analysis to maritime-based trade (littoral systems) and subsequent European (Portuguese, Dutch, British, Russian) expansion/colonization in Asia, the Orientalist scholar may have cast his net far too wide. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the last two chapters (pp. 263-319, concerning 19-20th centuries), which, as other reviewers have already noted, are way too sketchy, overly generalizing, at times propagandistic, and even off tangent. Don't ask me what importance T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land" or Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" holds for CEA history. Rather, the author could have breathed a word or two, say, about the Manchu-Chinese/Tibetan conflict vis-á-vis the Gurkha-ruled Nepal, the Opium Wars, the Crimean War, the 'Great Game' b/w Russia and Britain for the control of Central (and Inner) Asia, etc.

Nitpicking or not, allow me to make a slight correction at this point w/ regard to the following assertion: "[After the demise of the Sakyapa overlordship, circa 1357, w]ith the partial exception of brief interregnum periods, Tibet continued to be largely unified under the rule of one or another Mongol state down to the defeat of the Junghars by the Manchu-Chinese (p. 258 fn. 80)." This is clearly untrue. There was almost zero Mongol influence in Central Tibet (ÜTsang), let alone their central authority, during the Pakmodrupa priest-kings (1358-, nominally, 1618) and the Rinpungpa governors/castellans (roughly, 1491-1566). Under the reign of the Tsangpa rulers (1567-1642) certain Tibetan factions, mainly but not exclusively the Gelukpas, sought contact w/various Mongol tribes in order to secure their military aid. The Mongols' role during the early stage of the Dalai lama's regime (1642-1720) was that of a hired sword to subdue internal and external opposition.

The main corpus is best read simultaneously with the endnotes, of which there are 111 (pp. 385-426), that offer some real insights and marshal relevant evidences. The same is true for the epilogue entitled 'The Barbarians' (pp. 320-62), which goes a long way to dispel a host of long-held misconceptions, and the two appendices ('The Proto-Indo-Europeans and their Diaspora,' pp. 363-74; 'Ancient Central Eurasian Ethnonyms,' pp. 375-84). As a methodological tool, turning the ruling paradigm of centre-periphery inside out facilitates bringing some well-deserved 'historical justice' to this marginalized region in crucial observations, such as:

+ "In every recorded case when the traditional Graeco-Roman, Persian, or Chinese empires of the periphery [!] became too powerful and conquered or brought chaos to the Central Eurasian nomadic states, the result for Central Asia, at least, was economic recession. The Han Dynasty destruction of the Hsiung-nu resulted in chaos...it was several centuries before the Türk, the next nomadic people who understood the Silk Road, could restore the system...When the Chinese and Arab alliance against Tibetans and the Western Turkic empire...succeeded...the result was chaos..., bringing with it severe recession, followed by rebellions and revolutions led by Sogdians and other merchant people [740-60s CE] that affected most of the continent. Finally, when the Manchu-Chinese and Russians partitioned Central Eurasia and the Ch'ing Dynasty destroyed the Junghar Empire [1755]...the economic devastation they wrought...was so total that even at the turn of the millennium in AD 2000 the area had not recovered (pp. 257-8)."
+ "There was a constant drain of people escaping from China into the realms of the Eastern Steppe, where they did not hesitate to proclaim the superiority of the nomadic life-style. Similarly, many Greeks and Romans joined the Huns...where they lived better and were treated better (p. 76)."
+ The primary goal of fortifications along the borders of peripheral empires from China through Persia to Rome ('limes' network or the Byzantine military governorships called 'theme') was offensive in nature, "to hold territory conquered from neighbouring states and to prevent loss of population to them (p. 330)."
+ "[T]he vast majority of the silk possessed by the Central Eurasians in the two millennia from the early Hsiung-nu times [4-3rd c. BCE] through the Mongols down to the Manchu conquest was obtained through trade and taxation, not war or extortion (p. 23)."
+ Raids of steppe people were, in many cases, triggered by the breaches of treaties, or were made at the request of some peripheral power against local enemies (divide et impera), e.g., the Manchus were called upon by the Chinese Ming dynasty to crush rebellion; the Mongols' aim was to uproot their Jurchen (Chin dynasty) adversaries (p. 335); Uighur Turks (757 CE) were invited to quell the An Lu-shan revolt -- their sacking of Loyang (762) "was authorized by the financially strapped T'ang court as a reward or payment (p. 338)."

For reasons unknown, the following essays by the same author of the present tome have not found their way to the bibliography (pp. 427-55): 'Tibet and the Early Medieval Florissance in Eurasia,' in: Central Asiatic Journal 21 (2), 1977: pp. 89-104; in collaboration w/ Michael Walter: 'Some Indo-European Elements in Early Tibetan Culture,' in: Tibetan Studies 7, Vol. 2: pp. 1037-54, Vienna 1997.

(black hole between 500 b.c. and 1500 a.d.)
『I don't know where to start in reviewing this book. Perhaps the beginning is a good place. This book starts off well. The prologue concerning the hero myths and the origin of the comitatus seems curious at first but makes sense as the book goes on. The first chapter on the Hittites and the origin of the chariot I found fascinating. The second chapter was not quite as good, but the musings on the origins of philosophical thought and its possible diffusion via the Silk Road between China, India, and Greece was good food for thought. Which brought us up to about 500 b.c., at which point ...

The book just seemed to fall off a cliff. For the next two thousand years, the time period the majority of us are probably most interested in, all we get is a seemingly endless succession of names and dates, which tribal leader raided which tribal group, tra la tra la, with no maps and little indication of what is important out of all of this and what is not. One small example should suffice. On page 168 we encounter the sentence: "There Alp Arslan resoundingly defeated an army of the Byzantine emperor Romanus at the Battle of Mantzikert in 1071." That's it. No further reference.

Hello!!! Wasn't that the battle that initiated the papal call for the first Crusade, one of those seminal events in world history whose repercussions are still affecting the societies of Central Asia and indeed the whole world even today, almost a thousand years later? (Afghanistan, anyone?) You would think this might be a ripe field for discussion, but in fact there is not one single mention that the Crusades even happened. The Battle of the Bulge is in this book. Pearl Harbor is in this book. But not one single mention of the Crusades. Umm, wasn't that minor Central Asian group the Turks involved?

And historical personages. What we learn about Attila the Hun is that he must have had his reasons. Oh, really? (Or as my daughter would say: "No duh!") Of course he had his reasons! Hitler had his reasons as well. The question is: what were those reasons? And were those reasons good reasons? You won't find out here.

Tamerlane. Now there's a person I'd like to learn more about. Didn't he rule during some sort of golden age in Central Asian history? I've often heard about him over the years, but never truly learned much in detail. And now I can honestly say that I still haven't. After one quick paragraph outlining all his major and minor victories and defeats, we are given this:"The legacy of Tamerlane and the Timurids was to be in patronage of the arts." That's it? Yep, that's it.

The book does get interesting again in chapter 9, when he gets into a discussion of the littoral system and how the newly opened up European sea trade to the Far East affected the Silk Road economies, but then ...

The book falls right off the cliff again, and is a jumble right through to the end. I won't go into his extended rant against Modernism because other reviewers have already done that. He has some valid points, but mostly he just sets up straw men and tears them down as easy targets, rarely focusing on the larger picture. His prescription seems to be that if only the central Asian countries could unite and form some kind of European Union-type organization, and reinstitute a Victorian Era-style noble aristocracy based on the comitatus system (see, we did get back to it in the end), then the world might suddenly find itself living in peace and harmony.

Yeah, right.

A good book deserves to be written about the empires of the Silk Road. Unfortunately, this is not it.

(The mystery of the Indo-Europeans)
『Despite what one reviewer notes as a distracting issue in the plaint over modernism, this book, especially the beginning and notes, is an exciting take on the ever-mysterious history, or lack of it, of the Indo-Europeans, an epic in itself, for scholars, after the Homers. The Indo-European linguistics question is notably arcane and this review of the weighty issues that confound simple understanding inspires hope that some resolution of the ethno-maniacal mythologies here might be possible. It is hard to determine the validity of the issues in this field, but it is useful to consider this perspective when confronted with the 'Aryan invasion theories'. The book is filled with a lot of useful information. Many of the proposals, such as the manner of creole formation as an explication of the mysteries of Indo-European linguistic diversity, are especially interesting, if open to non-critical acceptance by the non-specialist. All in all, a splendid read, and possibly the beginnings of sanity on this question.』

The first complete history of Central Eurasia from ancient times to the present day,Empires of the Silk Roadrepresents a fundamental rethinking of the origins, history, and significance of this major world region. Christopher Beckwith describes the rise and fall of the great Central Eurasian empires, including those of the Scythians, Attila the Hun, the Turks and Tibetans, and Genghis Khan and the Mongols. In addition, he explains why the heartland of Central Eurasia led the world economically, scientifically, and artistically for many centuries despite invasions by Persians, Greeks, Arabs, Chinese, and others. In retelling the story of the Old World from the perspective of Central Eurasia, Beckwith provides a new understanding of the internal and external dynamics of the Central Eurasian states and shows how their people repeatedly revolutionized Eurasian civilization.

Beckwith recounts the Indo-Europeans' migration out of Central Eurasia, their mixture with local peoples, and the resulting development of the Graeco-Roman, Persian, Indian, and Chinese civilizations; he details the basis for the thriving economy of premodern Central Eurasia, the economy's disintegration following the region's partition by the Chinese and Russians in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the damaging of Central Eurasian culture by Modernism; and he discusses the significance for world history of the partial reemergence of Central Eurasian nations after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Empires of the Silk Roadplaces Central Eurasia within a world historical framework and demonstrates why the region is central to understanding the history of civilization.

『The theme of this book would probably be that it ties in with the rest of the series, which is 'The Magic Treehouse Series'. The moral lesson might be not to burn or destroy books because they are such a great source of history.
There are actually three main characters. First there is Morgan le Fay, from the time of King Arthur, who owns the treehouse. Next there is Jack, the oldest of the two siblings. Fianally, there is Annie, the younger of the two siblings.
The supporting characters are their mom, who is in pretty much every story at the begining and end. Also included are a few people from ancient China. Mainly there are the silk weaver, the scholar in disguise, and Emporer Qin. More minor roles are the silk weaver's fiance, and a few various scholars, townspeople, and guards.
"You're going to ancient China." is a good excerpt to illustrate the geographic and time settings. The time is around 2,000 years ago in the time of the first emperor, The Dragon King. The geographic setting is, of course, China. Since Emperor Qin (the first emperor) was trying to unite the colonies it was, by that time, all one country rather than being divided. It is set in the capitol where the Imperial Palace was built. The political setting is to the point where Emporer Qin was so frustrated with the scholars that he is burning all the books. Because of this everybody is scared of him, especially the scholars and philosophers.
The major problem in this story is Jack and Annie need to find the ancient book, without any major mishaps. Normally they have a few minor problems, but nothing too huge, as it's a children's book and only about 68 pages. Helping them resolve this problem are a silk weaver and a scholar in disguise. Resolving the problem, simply, they find the book and bring it home with only a few problems.

I have always liked this series, even though I'm 15 now, I still like this series even though they're kind of young for me, and I can finish one in 30 minutes.』

(The Magic treee house The day of the dragon King)
『What a great way for the kids to learn! These books are great reading for children 7- 10 the characters are a brother and sister ages 7 and 8 who travel through time in a magic tree house by picking up a book and wishing to go to the places in the book. The facts of each book are acurate so the children are learning without realizing it. The passport on line for the children to fill out helps the children retain the knowledge the attained while reading. These books are a great teaching tool for teachers and parents alike』

(Great chapter books!)
『My four year old son is in love with this chapter series! A friend suggested it to us since he seemed ready for a more advanced reading material at bedtime. My husband reads him a chapter every night...sometimes more because they don't want to stop. It's become a great tradition for them, and something they both look forward to. We love that there are so many in the collection! Start with number 1 and just continue. :)』

(MY BOY LOVES READING)
『My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!』

(Day of the dragon kings)
『this book Its great because anyone liked cartoon this book would like him』
『Jack and Annie set off to find an original copy of an ancient Chinese myth.

Armed only with their magic library cards, they must take on a book-burning

emperor. But with the help of a scholar and a silk weaver, they triumph again.

(The better toaster)
『The only con on this item is the price. Other than that I love it. It toasts well, cleans up easy, and looks great.』

(don't listen to naysayers.)
『i have had really good luck with delonghi products. not only good design but good quality too. this toast gets plenty hot and adjusts pretty accurately.』

(Less A Toaster, More A Bread Warmer/Crust Burner)
『You really have to give a LOT of thought to the moisture content and thickness of everything you put in there, making this a difficult toaster to love. My husband is in charge of toast duty, since I find this one very frustrating. If you buy bakery bread, that has a darker crust you will have to cut them off after it burns them, because it will every time. Thinner bread will always burn too. If you stop it before the crust burns, the middle part will not be toasted enough. The setting button has a large range, but I cannot see ever using the highest setting unless the bread was soaking wet or something. It never fails to burn, and I stand over it each time, my finger above the 'cancel' button, worrying, fretting, and I usually end up hitting it at least once, starting it again and end up burning the crusts again! AAAAAAAGH!』

(Excellent toaster)
『Beautiful brushed chrome toaster with lots of power. Does a great job on english muffins. Probably the best 2 slice toaster in the world.』

(Built-in Obsolescence)
『I was enticed by the product's appearance. It also had moderately good reviews. It worked perfectly adequately for about a year and a week! Just a few days after the warranty finished, toast started continuously rising and lowering into the toaster - the element never had a chance to do any toasting. I took it in to the local DeLonghi repair depot, only to be told that no parts were available for the toaster - it was basically chuck the entire product. I was not pleased, and wrote to DeLonghi customer service, but they didn't have the courtesy to even respond. A bad experience all around.』
『This sleek, brushed aluminum extra-wide toaster fits beautifully into any kitchen decor. Two extra-wide work in concert with self-adjusting grips to center food for precise, double-sided toasting. Loaded with convenient features and De'Longhi technology that make preparation and cleanup a breeze. Model #DTT900. One-year warranty.』
