(solid and inexpensive, works with my hp netbook (1030nr))
『plug and play, this works perfectly. a little slow to initialize, though it does not function poorly. i needed a cd rom drive for formatting my solid state drive, however i am dim because the disk i have to use for formatting my drivers is a dvd rom (who knew?) and that [obviously] wont work in a cd rom reader.

if, however, you like most people have a laptop with a faulty rom drive, or have an older model that didnt come with a rom drive, and you need one, this works flawlessly in that capacity. if, however, i were in need of a drive for constant use, i certainly would have spent the money on the samsung dvd/cd drive. but if you, like me, are in seldom need of using except the occasional reading of a cd rom, then this is the perfect purchase, because it is cheap and does exactly that.

it is light weight, sleek looking, and plug-and-plays perfectly with my hp netbook. on a whim, on account of reading several complaint on how this device hasnt functioned with other machines, i usb'd the drive with my emachines desktop and it works exactly as expected. i even made it eject through the computer, to make certain it works to description.

solid buy if all you need is the ability to read the occasional rom

(Not Exactly What Was Ordered But Works Like A Charm)
『Ordered this item for a just purchased netbook, as there was no CD drive. I wanted to load Microsoft Works suite program discs that came with my original desktop as there was no word processing program pre-loaded on the netbook. Also, we'll be taking the netbook on an overseas trip and I wanted to load some CDs so we had some music to listen to.

Was surprised when I opened the box that the unit did not have the swivel feature for loading the disc in the drive as illustrated, and instead was like an automobile CD player, where the disc is just inserted. Also, paperwork with it indicated the "eject" button was just for show and did not work. To eject I would need to right click on the computer's CD drive. So, with the comments about trapped discs and discs just spinning around with no functionality I didn't know what to expect.

Bottom line, everything worked SUPER. I've already ripped a couple of dozen music CDs and loading the Works disc was a snap. For $13 or so this is a marvel!』

『Just got this netbook yesterday. This is my first one. After a 1 week research, I decided to go with Asus because of price, design and comments of users on internet. Although I read some users said that it has charger problem or other issue, so far so good. I will udpate this later.』

(Does more than I thought it would)
『I looked at netbooks and small notebook computers for over a month, and I probably spent more time than is reasonable or sane on the entire project - simply because I wanted to be able to travel lighter than before, and have a computer that could still do most of what I need.

I looked at:

Lenovo U150
Lenovo S10
Acer Aspire One
Toshiba NB205
Dell Mini

I eventually bought the 1005PE because of it's battery life, the processor, and it's keyboard, and overlooked the mouse (which I have come to view as acceptable).

Things I Liked About the 1005PE:

1. The keyboard. It's much better than I expected. The keys bounce when I type, and I kind of like that. I wouldn't call it flex, and frankly I don't even understand what keyboard "flex" is anyway. I type fast and I write a great deal as part of my job, and if the keyboard were not comfortable, it would be the first reason to not buy the computer. They say the keyboard is 92% of a full size, and it feels that way or just a bit smaller. But it's easy to type on and I love that.

2. The processor. The computer has been able to do everything I wanted. I have watched videos, listened to music, plugged in an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and I've even run several programs at one time. I do a lot of spreadsheet work and I've not used it for any of that, but I am now confident that it could do that reasonably well as long as I didn't go crazy on the rows and columns.

One thing that surprised me is that I was told that I needed to be aware that I could not use the computer for more than one thing at a time, and that it couldn't be my main machine. But the fact is that I've been running two or three programs at once, and it is fine. I know it's not a business-class machine, but for my kind of business, it's doing great. I run trading software (Metatrader 4), gmail, music, and web browsers all at the same time.

I did add 1GB of RAM (for a total of 2GB) and that helps as well, I am sure.

3. The battery life. I love that the battery lasts as long as it does. It seems to be lasting 9+ hours for every charge.

What I didn't like so much

1. The mouse. The mouse pad has bumps on it and I didn't like that so much. I'd have preferred a little mouse nipple like I have on my Thinkpad X61. I hated that at first and got used to it. Don't get me wrong: the mouse on the 1005PE works fine, and I've gotten used to it. And it was worth getting over for all of the other features.

2. No built in 3G. I'd love to have been able to have a PCI Express card slot or a built in 3G modem. As it stands, I have a USB modem for Verizon's wireless broadband and it works great. It just adds one more piece of equipment that I have to carry around.

I looked at a ton of computers before I bought this one. I'm happy with what I got. I think it's fair to say that for most, they're going to want to have a separate computer if they do major work stuff, but I've found that I am able to do everything I need and I haven't sacrificed any major performance to get it.』

『After two weeks, it suddenly gave a low battery warning and shut down, despite being plugged in. The charger is lit, but the machine doesn't charge. Since I can't turn it on in order to wipe the hard drive, I can't return it without paying someone to erase it. What a piece of junk. Get a Mac! (I did.)』

(First time buying a netbook, and made a great choice!)
『This is my first time purchasing a netbook, and I made a great choice. After literally hours of research to find the perfect little thing to carry around with me on campus, I found the ASUS Eee PC 1005 Pe! I needed something light, extremely dependable to use during classes to type up notes, and cheap; I already have an HP laptop, but it was way too heavy and its battery is way too short to carry around university.

I'm not exactly the most informed on electronics, so I googled multiple times, went on laptopmag.com, cnet.com, et cetera, et cetera, and I made an informed decision. After all my probing, reading, and weighing my options, I decided to go with the Asus Eee PC 1005 Pe.

The netbook is so light; I can carry it around in my purse/tote and it doesn't bother me at all. The battery life, unfortunately, is a little bit less then expected (I think I screwed it up though because I did not fully charge the battery before first use...). At 100%, the battery life is around 8-6 hours, depending on how vigorously I use the netbook, brightness of the display, and other factors. The display is bright, and all the colors are true to life. The keyboard is not full-size, but very practical in terms of ratio; I barely make mistakes when typing. The touch pad area is pretty much the only downside of this netbook. It's quite tiny, and the touch functions are not very receptive. However, I use the Fn and arrow keys to scroll up/down, so it's no biggie.

To sum it up, the netbook has very attractive functions and capabilities, including price!

『Couldn't install ubuntu netbook remix yet. Keyboard didn't work and there was some kind of kernel error. Will probably be a workaround soon since these netbooks are popular.

100 gb in drive C:\ and 122 gb in drive D:\ is what i showed in windows 7. ubuntu disk partition manager said something like 100gb windows 7 loader, 10 gb windows vista loader for some reason. Probably should still wipe and reinstall.

Didn't come with much bloat. Just an trend micro, microsoft office+language packs, chicken invaders 2(?!) and other oberon media crap. A bunch of the windows updates were annoyingly for the old version of office so do yourself a favor and delete it first. The touchpad is awesome. Case looks shiny and hard instead of bland and plastic.

HP mini HD [...] with broadcom vid accelerator and better screen res support was my first choice but comes with 3 cell battery, no claim of battery life and they tried to charge me [...] shipping and [...] tax. Got this instead with free shipping+no tax.

Seems to still kill the battery over the long term having it in the laptop while the power supply is on. Better to only use the battery when needing it and let it completely drain out. Not going to test battery yet for that reason. Edit: Yes I know the li-ion batteries shouldn't be discharged all the way. The batteries have something to prevent them from being completely discharged so you don't have to worry about using it until the laptop turns off. It will have a decreased permanent loss the less capacity you leave it with after detaching from the computer. It also decays more slowly in colder temperature so if you're hard core about not wanting to get a [...] replacement in a couple of years leave it in your freezer while not in use.

Webcam has smooth framerate, audio is pretty decent. It's very quiet, still has fan on the left but not loud. Can't complain about speed. Boots fast and most programs run fine. The brightness is good, I wish there was a setting between the first and second brightness though.

Powerchord and USBs grind into place. It's really a tight fit so it takes a lot to accidentally dislodge them. At the same time it makes me feel sorry for asus because people of walmart will not plug it in all the way and RMA, can already feel it coming. My other laptop would get really hot putting in on the bed or carpet but this stays the same temperature.

I don't think there's anything different as far as hardware in the 14 hour asus eee, or if there is it's something to better limit cpu speed that works in conjunction to with the windows 7 software, and probably wouldn't work on linux. This version also doesn't have bluetooth support, but who really cares, it's not a phone and bluetooth just wastes more power enabled. The [...] versions just have a 160gb drive, for the [...] it's better to get this.

Can't complain too much about the keyboard. I like the up/down keys doubled as pageup/pagedown. There's none of those useless custom nonstandard keys like a picture of mail, the internet, music etc at the top a lot of laptops have that I never use. There was a lot of programs on startup, most were asus and hardware stuff but I still had to disable half, and windows 7 has an insane amount of useless services but everything was running pretty well. I recommend recommend setting it to classic theme, windows key+break ->advanced system settings, performance settings, and se4t to adjust for best performance.

The laptop scored a 2.4 out of 7.9 in the windows experience index.

My last laptop was asus g1 1680 x 1050 native res on a 15.4" screen. The letters are tiny because the resolution is so high, and changing it just makes things blurred looking, so using this tiny netbook is actually LESS of an eye strain. Might actually make it my primary laptop.』

Unlike most male characters he enjoys peeking at the girls, blackmailing them and, in general, taking advantage of them. How refreshing. The two girls in question have run away from home, so they need a place to live, need money and need somebody to, in general, care for them.
One of them even LIKES wearing the maid's outfit. A must for any manga library.』

『The manga has a cuteness yet pervertedness about it. Add comedy to that and we have ourselves a winner. Even all that considered, I expected a little more. Good read, pick one up ^_^』

(A hilarious gag comedy with a wink and nod to all the manga cliches)
『I was introduced to Seven Seas Entertainment's He Is My Master by a friend who is a huge anime and manga fan. I've only recently begun reading manga so I took his recommendation seriously. At first, the breaking of the 5th wall antics and dialogue in the He Is My Master was a tad surprising, but once I got in the flow of the story (what story there was which usually involved one of the sister maids getting her clothes off in one way or another) I was hooked on this title.

The premise of He Is My Master is of a 14 year-old boy whose parents pass away leaving him with a huge mansion and all their millions. With no other adult in sight this boy named Yoshitaka proceeds to satisfy all his juvenile and hormonal dreams by hiring a pair of sisters, Izumi and Mitsuki Sawatari (14 and 13 years of age respectively) to be his live-in maids. The rest of the first volume involves Yoshitaka's propensity to try and satisfy his lolita schoolgirl uniform fetish, french maid uniform fetish, peeping tom fetish and a slew of others which is too numerous to count. All of this with Izumi Sawatari taking the brunt of his attentions. The book also introduces a lecherous and way-too-clever alligator named Pochi who also happens to be the younger sister's pet. Between Yoshitaka and Pochi's attentions it's surprising that Izumi even manages to keep a semblance of her attire from becoming ripped off.

He Is My Master if full of comedy which usually falls under the gag comedy type. The book also manages to heavily break the 5th wall as characters in the story will speak as if they know they are manga characters and thus always mention just how cliched the situations they find themselves in all the time. Mitsuki is very guilty of constantly speaking to the reader and her dialogue always have hilarious consequences for her older sister Izumi.

He Is My Master is not your typical harem girl manga and it's lead male character breaks the mold of the male lead who avoids the girls' attentions. Yoshitaka knows what he likes and wants and will go to any means no matter how underhanded to get what he wants. Here's to hoping that the anime gets licensed soon and makes it way to DVD in the US.』

『Need a book to supplement the pamphlet I got with my 1005HA. This book has a great deal of information but is dated.(2005) With the exceptions of two chapters it completely ignores Windows XP OS ASUS. The hardware uses and descriptions are still current but trivial. The models covered only goes to the 1000 series and not the more recent 1005 and 1008 series. Really wanted this book to come through. If you have a Window XP or Windows 7 Operating System then you should look elsewhere for information on your Netbook. If you have Linux then you've come to the right place.』

(Good Over All Basic Info for the Linux EeePC)
『I've had a EeePC 1000 with a 40 GB SSD and Xandros Linux OS for over 1 year. I purchased this book to learn more about the Linux OS than I have learned via Web Forums and trial and error (I've reset the OS several times, thus losing the changes I've made to the EeePC and requiring me to redo those changes - learning by rote). The reviews helped me know that although some reference was made to the Win XP OS, the Linux OS was covered in greater detail. This is true. I'm 3/4 way through the book and have picked up a few tips and refreshed myself on the basic operation of the EeePC (better than the EeePC ops manual). Also the first 17 chapters dealt with how to do things in the Simple Desktop mode and I've been on the Advance Desktop for most of the past year. The last few chapters (18 - 23 plus 2 bonus chapters) get into the Advance Desktop features, use of the Command Line, customizing the simpleui.rc file, using TweakEEE and Pimpmyeee.sh (all of which I've read about on Web Forums), as well as troubleshooting tips, internet resources, and two bonus chapters dealing with other Linux Distros and Power saving tips. These last few chapters are why I purchased this book. Over all I feel this to be a good purchase and I have found the layout of the book to be easy to follow and understand. It is nice to have a easily understood reference manual sitting beside my EeePC as I make desired changes to the PC.』

『RTFM - or read the f***** manual - is a crucial concept for any computer wizzard. The problem is that most manuals are unclear, impractical or simply deadly boring dull. The good news is that Joel McNamara has written an exceptional manual for the wee Asus Eee PC. Buy this book so you can easily get the most out of your light-weight companion. You will even learn how to power it by using the sun or even your own body energy. Learn how it works in a Linux and a Windows XP environment. And compare. Get the hang of fixing many bugs yourself. Unless you want to start from scratch like the author was forced to in 1980.
One final remark: the possibilities of Google Apps remained somewhat under exposed. I stick to the 5 stars though.』

I asked a computer engineer at my work what he suggested, and he said Asus was the better of all the similar brands. The Dell one is suppose to be very good, but I have owned 2 Dells in my life and the motherboard went on both of them after a short time, so I refuse to buy another Dell. This Asus really cranks and has an awesome battery life. If you are using it for mostly surfing the net and checking e-mails it is perfect. It also handles word documents very well, so it is perfect if you are a student.』

『I bought this for my wife, who is a non-techie and she really likes it. I replaced the Win7 starter with Ubuntu Netbook Remix. There are a couple glitches that can be worked around and are fixed for the next Ubuntu release.

It is surprisingly speedy for a netbook. We get around 5 or 6 hours of battery life. The unit feels solid. My only tiny gripes are that the hinge is very stiff, so opening the laptop takes some effort. and the glossy finish does collect fingerprints. It's size is very convenient. I tend to steal it from my wife and take it places to do troubleshooting for friends. I have had no difficulty connecting to any wireless network. As long as you use this for netbook type tasks, you will likely be pleased with this computer.』

    『I recently got my ASUS Eee PC 1005PE and am happy with it. I planned to upgrade to 2GB and ordered the Crucial CT25664AC800 as was recommended in some reviews. However, some people have had trouble with this.

    Crucial now has a recommendation for the ASUS 1005PE: the 2GB CT1166735, which appears to have the same specifications as the CT25664AC800. The Crucial site doesn't appear to be working quite right because it says there are four possible products which can be used, but only shows the one. Further, the Crucial program which scans your computer and makes upgrade recommendations didn't run on the ASUS -- a Win 7 issue?

    Searching the Crucial site for CT25664AC800 gives the surprising result that there are FIVE versions of this ram module by different manufacturers - two from Intel, two from Diamond Flower, and one from MSI. It's possible to order a particular kind of CT25664AC800 from Crucial or just place a generic order. Perhaps the inconsistent results people have with the CT25664AC800 are due to different implementations of it.

    I plan to return the unopened CT25664AC800 that I received from Amazon as it does not appear to be the recommended Crucial memory, although the specifications are identical to the Crucial CT1166735. The CT1166735 is apparently only manufactured by one supplier and the ASUS 1005PE is mentioned explicitly in its description.』

    『This is my first netbook, and it's everything I want and more! The Chiclet keyboard is what made me buy this eee on the first place. I was skeptical about the Windows 7 Starter, but no worries, I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate with no problem! The 1g memory is not slow for me at all. I'm a college student who uses it for basic functions (ie. internet&word processor) so I think I will stick with the 1g for awhile. This eee is also built really sturdy! Don't mind the extra little weight because the battery lasts a long long long time! I'm at school 13+ hours a day, and this baby lasts me all day and night with a few hours to spare for video chatting with my friends! I've only had this sweet little beast for almost a week, and so far I haven't had any problems with it. Also for under $370, this sure is a Cadillac of all netbooks right now! The only lame part is that it didn't come with a sleeve like other models do... also it is quite a fingerprint magnet --- but those details don't bother me.』

    『I have almost nothing but positive things to say about this little pc. I was expecting nothing but a "half pc" if you will. But I have been proven wrong; this little thing is GREAT. And I have to say it does it all on the stock 1gb of ram.

    Pro:
    1. I couldn't stand Windows 7 Starter and all the bloatware, so I wiped that out and installed 7 Ultimate instead without a hiccup.
    -The Fn key functions run from a standalone app in the Program Files/EeePC folder.
    2. Performance runs flawlessly. Aero Glass, the Windows Button + Tab flipping through windows, all while multitasking beautifully (I have a ton of little taskbar programs constantly running...55 total processes to be exact.)
    3. Always gets 8-12 hours battery life depending on my load (WiFi, music, programs loaded, etc)
    4. Very comfortable to type on. While on the ever ever ever so slightly smaller side, I still get my 85wpm on this keyboard.
    5. Web browsing is snappy and quick as it should be, even with multiple browsers/tabs going.
    6. YouTube runs without issue, however if I multitask with Hulu, there is an occasional missed frame.
    7. Tiny and LIGHT. Smaller and thinner than most texts, I'm used to lugging a 7lb 15" around...this is a god send.
    8. Boot time is always under 30 seconds for Ultimate.
    9. To fully charge a dead battery takes barely 90 minutes...amazing.
    10. Power adapter is very portable and light weight.
    11. Speakers are surprisingly loud and decent, actually. Not the best speakers I've heard from a laptop, but they fill my kitchen with sound with little effort.
    12. Touchpad is even more customizable than my primary laptop. Add in hand gestures...great.
    -It allows 2-3 finger gestures for certain features, but with a smaller touchpad + big fingers...doesn't always work great. I disabled those myself.
    13. Quite an attractive little thing, it's very pleasing to the eye.


    Con:
    1. The screen is obviously low quality; unless it's viewed at JUST the right angle, colors go off and becomes difficult to read.
    2. Almost impossible to type with low light or in the dark on it. Perhaps I'm just not used to the smaller keyboard yet, but I have yet to accomplish this successfully.
    3. Within the first hour of usage, the right arrow key popped off. It's back on and hasn't come back off yet, but first day, come now.
    4. WiFi card seems to have some issues of downloading larger files...I have to constantly stop/resume them on the Eee while on other pc's, they just download.
    5. Completely and absolutely refuses to boot random OS from the USB. Linux, Windows, OSX, nothing will boot. I can disable the HDD/DVD-Rom in the bios/boot sequence and it comes up with an error. Using the same USB on my other laptop, they boot without an issue.
    -However, tri-booting XP/7/Linux has no issue...go figure?
    6. Not much of a fan of the touchpad..sort of sticky and with the added bumps (there to differentiate between palm rests and touchpad) the finger doesn't flow smoothly due to that combo'd with the glossy plastic finish.
    7. The left/right click touchpad buttons are ludicrously STIFF and require WAY too much effort for something as simple as a context menu.
    8. A bit of a fingerprint magnet. Not the exterior, but around the screen and keyboard...oh yes.


    All in all, the pros completely outweigh the cons. Amazing performance and battery life in an extremely portable package at an even better price point easily look over the touchpad.
