As described in the "Twilight" series of books, Jacob carves a wooden wolf charm in a similar red color to his fur. That is why we chose Padauk wood, which is NOT dyed or stained--its rich red color is completely natural.
Each charm is laser cut and etched with details of tail, paws, and eyes. This charm is one sided, back is smooth, although visible wood grain still gives visual texture.

I'm relatively new to the Magnetic Fields: I picked up their new CD Distortion about a month ago and was impressed. Then I ordered 7 other Magnetic Fields CD's and I was a little taken aback. They didn't have the almost Jesus and Mary Chain noise of Distortion. But soon I adjusted to the quirky pop sound of the Magnetic Fields and this CD quickly became my favorite. The Amazon reviewer is an idiot: "But much of this particular stretch of the Fields is lacking in charm, since Merritt's wry stance chafes a bit too hard against the guileless melodies." It a very quirky country sound, full of longing and ache and wry melancholy, and the CD is held together very tightly by the controlling metaphor of the road. I buy tons of CD's and this one is going to be one of my favorite purchases of 2008. I'm wondering how I've missed listening the the Magnetic Fields for all these years!
This is a great album, and I won't add anything to what's already been said. I just thought I'd let those who don't much like keyboards know that this is still a totally worthwhile purchase. I'd thought of trying the magnetic fields for a while but never did because I didn't think I'd like the keyboard sound that everyone talks about. They treat the keyboards so much, and warp the sound to make it so it really doesn't make a difference. The songs are strong, and I think he makes sure to never sound cheezy on the keyboard (maybe once.) Anyway the songs are so good that the way it's played doesn't matter. Plus, the keyboards really do sound very good for the most part, and serve the songs well. Guitar fanatics, give this one a try, it's an excellent piece of music.
I first heard this album about eight years ago, and I have listened to it several times a month since. It just doesn't get old--the more I hear it, the more remarkable it is. Many people have commented on Merritt's eclectic instrumentation, which is indeed striking. But the really fantastic thing about his music is just how great he is at turning out a tune. The instrumentations are novel, but not novelties, and the tight melodies have the charm and stay-in-your-headness of folk tunes. Stephin Merritt is just so damned smart--and not in a look-at-me-I'm-so-deep or hipster way, but in the understated, constant, prolific manner that makes for lasting songwriting. His lyrics are also smart and moving, even when, as with the 69 Love Songs trio, he insists on claiming they're ironic or meta. He's a master at wry, pithy little lines that stick with you a lot more strongly than most of the abstract, self-congratulatory crap that passes for poetry these days.

I've listened to each Magnetic Fields album several times over--I'm completely addicted to them, in fact--and while there's not a bad one in the bunch, Charm of the Highway Strip does stand out as the most consistently fantastic and aesthetically unified project. Give this album a try. You won't regret it-none of the many people I've forced this on have.

I'm in a Magnetic Fields month, or maybe a Magnetic Fields six months, who knows? Haven't dipped into 69 Love Songs, yet. And that's probably a six month project itself. But of I, The Wayward Bus/Plastic Trees, and Charm of the Highway Strip, Charm is my current favorite. Like the work of Handsome Family, Giant Sand, and Hank Dogs, this country is not going to be crashing into the mainstream any time soon. Made up of equal parts electronic, synth mixes, cello, and something that sounds like a harpsichord (personally I hear more Phil Spector than Abba in the music), every one of these nine vocal songs -- the tenth, Dust Bowl, is an instrumental that can be skipped -- trades on the classic country themes of trains and highways. Only in Merritt's hand they are neither appealing nor romantic, but obsessions that promise escape and deliver only more pain and loneliness. Which, of course, is exactly what defines Merritt. Lonely Highway, with its references to Jackson, might be the fate that awaited Lee and Nancy, Johnny and June, after they got married in that "fever hotter than a pepper sprout." My two current favorites are I Have the Moon (though written eight years or so earlier, it's what Drusilla might have sung to Spike on Buffy after he became human) and Fear of Trains, where Merritt joins the Ramones in having the KKK take someone away, in this case the history of a Native American girl. Next week the favorites are likely to be different. What's certain is that Charm of the Highway Strip as a whole is going to be a very long-term favorite.
Seriously, if you are a magnetic fields fan, BUY THIS. You may not prefer the more dark, country, sound of this album as opposed to the often springy 69 love songs, but i guarantee you, there is no way not to fall in love with this album. By my second listen, this album was already sacred to me, and right now it is sitting in its case after my last spurt of listenings, waiting patiently until the time is right for me to take it out again. My nightmare would be to overplay this album. Stephen Merrit's low voice will make you feel lonely as he sings of a girl's fear of trains, or a lonesome highway, but at the same time he soothes you, in making you too feel like an explorer on some vast, endless highway. The songs on this album make you feel that while you may be lonely, it's an almost noble thing to be.
Sweet and sour, incurably romantic, and deeply misanthropic, Magnetic Fields' mastermind Stephin Merritt is a one-of-a-kind voice in modern lo-fi pop. This 1994 outing is a bit of a departure, with Merritt taking his trademark ABBA-styled Casio-pop for a spin in the country--literally. Awash in lush, Nashville-ready production, songs like the doleful "Lonely Highway" (which encompasses snatches of the Lee Hazelwood classic "Jackson") and "Born on a Train" are nothing short of thrilling. But much of this particular stretch of the Fields is lacking in charm, since Merritt's wry stance chafes a bit too hard against the guileless melodies. Jr Kelly turned out a true gem here. Every tune is uplifting and positive, rhythms are fresh, and delivery memorable. Could'nt imagine not having this CD. Bought this a while ago and rarely does it get cold.
Rise is a great album! I can listen to it from beginning to end. He's giving you consciousness on all levels. From inspirational themes like"Rise", to faith in Jah songs like"I'll Never", to dancehall lovers rock like "Let It Be Me". The beats are on point, and as an added bonus, he sounds a bit like Sizzla. At first I couldn't tell the two apart. But once you start listening to his music, you'll soon realize the difference. Junior Kelly will defiantly make in impact on conscious dancehall reggae music in the years to come. Trust me, you won't be disappointed when you purchase this album.
in my recent trip to jamaica i heard this singer and i thought it was great. its a contagius rhithm so i recommend it.

(Finally a great Burl Ives compilation!)

This CD is advertised as having charm, humour and sincerity. All true. My husband has been telling me for over 20 years about Burl Ives singing Ghost Riders in the Sky, but I didn't pay much attention. I mean, I have heard that song by other artists before, and it didn't impress me. Then finally, one day I was trying to think of some little gift for him to show that I love him so much, and this song came to mind. I went on Amazon, typed in the song and artist, and there it was. Clicked "Buy It Now", and promptly forgot about it. In short order, there it was in the mailbox, and hubby out of town. I opened it (remember, it was bought as a present for HIM), and just sat and smiled and smiled and smiled as I listened. The Riders In the Sky brought tears to my eyes. I have heard that song before, but never like this version!! Every song is a feast to the ears. Pure listening pleasure. I suspect I will have to order my own since we have separate offices!!!
Burl fans have waited years for a quality CD which includes most of his great songs. Though this compilation omits a few of his treasures, it's still the best Greatest Hits package out there. If you own only one Burl Ives album, then make it this one. Unfortunately, current marketers rehash many of Ives' worst songs, the ones geared towards small children, basically novelty songs. Unfortunately, there are a couple of these clunkers of this album, but you can easily skip over those.

Most of this is an adult album with some of the most common-sense and beautiful singing you will ever hear. Many of the cuts were recorded in 1960 with just Burl, his guitar and a few special effects. The songs are American standards and Burl's interpretation is marvelous throughout. His penetrating, unique voice will send shivers down your spine with his rendition of Riders in the Sky. There are some curious omissions, like Mule Train, John Henry and Lindy Lou. You can buy"Wayfaring Stranger"for those gems.

Ives is a master at singing these songs and this is a honest, stripped-down, unadorned masterpiece. They don't make music like this anymore, and as far as this genre goes, this is as good as it gets.

LOVED THIS MOVIE. IT WAS SUGGESTED TO ME BY A FRIEND AND I AM SO GLAD I BOUGHT IT. I ENJOYED EVERY BIT OF IT.
I am ordering the DVD today. I have the book, and have read it over and over and over, since 1999. It is charming, and wonderful, and even better than reading it, is listening to Kaye Gibbons read it on audio tape. I have worn my tape out listening to it so many times. Kaye's voice makes the characters come alive, and her North Carolinian accent is simply beautiful. If you haven't read the book, get it today! You will fall in love with these 3 women, and Kaye Gibbons style of story-telling!
I love this movie. It's a simple story, full of the charm and humor of family life. And with three strong female leads - who could ask for more?
This is a truly exceptional film. Loved it from start to finish. I'm quite surprised that I had not heard of it before. It is in parts humurous, romantic, dramatic and sad. If you loved "Fried Green Tomatoes" as I did, you will enjoy this tale of Southern women from the WWII era. This is a movie that the entire family can enjoy as there was no cursing or sex.

The relationship between the three generation of women was portrayed with great honesty and affection. And although some of the men were portrayed as nitwits, in the end, it showcased two beautiful love stories.

The actress who portrayed "Margaret" has a gorgeous smile. She did an excellent job as did the rest of the cast.
If you love films about strong women and what they can accomplish throughout the generations this flick is for you.

The great Gena Rowlands stars as a homeopathic healer whose strength and spirit runs her town and family ragged. She compassionately treats a town of people with herbs and treatments made from love while watching over her daughter and granddaughter like a hawk. The daughter is played by Mimi Rogers, her character is a flirty frilly woman always in search of love and not very interested in medicine. The granddaughter is played very well by Susan May Pratt and she is the family member who ends up following in her grandmother's footsteps. The relationship between the grandmother and granddaughter is truly touching and inspirational. The strength of all of the women is to be admired especially because the film takes place during the 40's and WWII when women were still expected to be mothers, housekeepers and cooks rather than professional independent women on their own.

Rowlands steals this film away and will leave you wishing for a grandmother just like her. The beauty of this movie lies in the compassion and relationships in a family of women. I believe it will charm you into a new way of living.

LOVED THIS MOVIE. IT WAS SUGGESTED TO ME BY A FRIEND AND I AM SO GLAD I BOUGHT IT. I ENJOYED EVERY BIT OF IT.
I am ordering the DVD today. I have the book, and have read it over and over and over, since 1999. It is charming, and wonderful, and even better than reading it, is listening to Kaye Gibbons read it on audio tape. I have worn my tape out listening to it so many times. Kaye's voice makes the characters come alive, and her North Carolinian accent is simply beautiful. If you haven't read the book, get it today! You will fall in love with these 3 women, and Kaye Gibbons style of story-telling!
I love this movie. It's a simple story, full of the charm and humor of family life. And with three strong female leads - who could ask for more?
This is a truly exceptional film. Loved it from start to finish. I'm quite surprised that I had not heard of it before. It is in parts humurous, romantic, dramatic and sad. If you loved "Fried Green Tomatoes" as I did, you will enjoy this tale of Southern women from the WWII era. This is a movie that the entire family can enjoy as there was no cursing or sex.

The relationship between the three generation of women was portrayed with great honesty and affection. And although some of the men were portrayed as nitwits, in the end, it showcased two beautiful love stories.

The actress who portrayed "Margaret" has a gorgeous smile. She did an excellent job as did the rest of the cast.
If you love films about strong women and what they can accomplish throughout the generations this flick is for you.

The great Gena Rowlands stars as a homeopathic healer whose strength and spirit runs her town and family ragged. She compassionately treats a town of people with herbs and treatments made from love while watching over her daughter and granddaughter like a hawk. The daughter is played by Mimi Rogers, her character is a flirty frilly woman always in search of love and not very interested in medicine. The granddaughter is played very well by Susan May Pratt and she is the family member who ends up following in her grandmother's footsteps. The relationship between the grandmother and granddaughter is truly touching and inspirational. The strength of all of the women is to be admired especially because the film takes place during the 40's and WWII when women were still expected to be mothers, housekeepers and cooks rather than professional independent women on their own.

Rowlands steals this film away and will leave you wishing for a grandmother just like her. The beauty of this movie lies in the compassion and relationships in a family of women. I believe it will charm you into a new way of living.

In latter 1949 Rossellini wanted to turn the key of disquiet in the heart of man at the end of the horrible decade called 1940's. To do so he gazed to the past champion of meek and mild, to the saint of nature and all living things - St. Francis of Assisi. Ably assisted by then 'not quite famous' Federico Fellini we get a collection of vignettes on the plausible daily deeds once done by his band of fellow monks whom had gathered to hone their skills as a group before setting out in the world, each to his own. It's all very simple, it's all way beyond film narration as we have come to anticipate, and it's all very wonderful. To delve deeper would be to miss that huge chunk of a message aimed dead center right between your ears, eyes, and heart. This one was meant to relax and enjoy. Man is one of many in the collective whole. The total sum make for the special resulting one. Nothing is ever left out.

"The Flowers of St. Francis" is a lovely little film directed by the great Italian neo-realist, Roberto Rossellini, and co-written by Federico Fellini. A collaboration between Italian cinema's most famous neo-realist and its most famous surrealist should pique the curiosity of any cinephile, while devotees of St. Francis, arguably the Church's most enduringly popular saint, will find much to enjoy in this simple, touching film.

Told in a series of vignettes that echo Christ's parables, "The Flowers of St. Francis" captures something of the whimsy of Francis' ministry. He remains one of the most accessible and benevolent of the long litany saints in the Catholic tradition, at least in part because Francis felt the joy of faith, even in times of trial and hardship. Any movie about a saint's life risks over-piety, turning a human person into a sacrosanct object, as if the saint's blinding halo casts in shadow any individual features. That's certainly not how Francis saw himself, and it's not how he's portrayed in the film. Rossellini and Fellini approach their subject with love, which is not exactly the same as reverence. The brothers (who were all played by members of the Franciscan order) laugh, make fools of themselves, joke with each other -- but the effect is always familial, always in the spirit of love and charity.

There are moments of darkness and light in "The Flowers of St. Francis," a narrative chiaroscuro that reflects the constant struggle and tension of modeling one's life on Christ. There are sequences of physical comedy (poor Brother Ginepro being tossed around like a rag doll by a band of marauders) that wouldn't seem out-of-place in a Chaplin film. Then there are passages of powerful simplicity and pathos, such as Francis' encounter with a leper in a desolate field on a dark night, that remind the viewer that love must first conquer fear. Faith is alive in this film, and it's not always easy. Francis, with grace and love, praised God by praising His creation (he's the patron saint of the environment, after all!). This film, like the subject that inspired it, feels like the fruit of that love.

Martin Scorsese, no cinematic lightweight, wrote an insightful "personal appreciation" for the 2005 DVD release of "The Flowers of St. Francis." I'll let il maestro speak, as he is a more reliable authority than yours truly:

"What Rossellini did, with such grace and such apparent ease, was to make a movie about a group of men for whom existence is a neverending struggle -- a struggle to be good, a struggle to stay true to the word of God. At times, the struggle becomes comic, and I still marvel at Rossellini's daring in these scenes -- the way Francis and his brethren jump through the puddles, or the cooking of the soup, which wouldn't be out of place in a Laurel and Hardy short. Of course, it's all done in a very loving manner, and that's why it is at once so magical and so true. We're all ridiculous at times -- even those of us who are declared saints."
Rossellini's Francesco, Guillare di Dio/Francis, God's Jester (aka The Flowers of St francis) is less political than Pasolini's Gospel According to St. Matthew, but it's still possible to see it as one of its antecedents with its use of amateur actors and avoidance of studio work. Its anecdotal narrative doesn't always work (the sequence with the tyrant is amusing but too broadly played, for example), but it does build up a picture of an alternative, more open-spirited approach to religious devotion more in tune with nature than scripture, and the ending is both funny and quietly touching, as Francesco's followers spin round and round in circles until dizzy to find which path God wants them to follow.
Rossellini is an extraordinary director (for a good introduction to his work see M. Scorsese's, My Voyage to Italy) His treatment of St.Francis is unlike any other screen version I have seen, and in my view, irreplaceable.It is based on "I Fioretti" very early collection of stories that grew up among the first followers and is really more about the effect Francis had on them than it is a "biography" of the saint. It that way it is more like a "gospel," an excited, almost unbelievable, account of how he changed people's lives. It is not the place to go to get the basic facts, but if you want to get right to the "truth" of this person who changed western culture fundamentally, then this might well be the place to go. For a very effective contemporary retelling of some the Fioretti stories, try Murray Bodo's Tales of St. Francis.The film is also a great display of Rossellini's revolutionary cinematic realism. A real classic. Enjoy!
P.S. after writing this I read the other reviews. They make clear the range of possible reaction both on the human level and the artistic. I don't have any quarrel with (almost) any of them. I would just say that there is a great deal going on here regarding both the person and film, so if you are just getting acquainted with either aspect, look around a bit before making up your mind for yourself.
i love the story of st francis.. This is a fine black and white movie - one of Rossellini's better films of the period.. While it is not quite as powerful as 'Open City' it is a very important movie and deserves to be seen..

Wow saying this book is a guide of any kind is a stretch. First of all there is no rhyme or reason as to why some items are included and some are not. It feels like the author just threw darts are a board to pick her entries.

Second, her information is outright wrong on several entries. I gave this book a 2 - because its midly entertaining. There are some tables in the back that are fairly accurate and I would say that those are probably the best part of the book. There are no scientific names for herbs so she relies on you just knowing about it, having another book that tells you what is what - or worse - guessing which can lead to some dangerous practices.

I would not take anything you see in this book at face value. Its a great entertainment tool, the tables in the back are helpful - but that's about all it has to offer. If you want a serious Magickal Herbalism reference book, I highly recommend a book by Paul Beyerl, Scott Cunningham, Ellen Dugan or even Gerina Dunwich (although I am not a big fan of her work, but her books are better).

If you are going to be mixing your own stuff - specially for herbal baths and products that will come in direct contact with your skin, I highly recommend you get a good desk herbal reference such as The Herb Book by John Lust or any book by the Tierra's so that you know side effects and possible toxic herbs before you mix and use them. Do not mix anything out of this book alone!

This is an awesome addition to any magikal herbal library. Alphabetized, as well as a quick reference tables for specific needs. Extremely handy and useful. Not only herbs, but veggies and other household items included. That increases success in your spiritual craft and knowledge.
I thought this book is helpful but cheaply made, the paper inside is of cheep quality despite the nice cover. The information is very helpful but I would say this is a reference book, nothing more.

I like how Caroline Keene writes. She gives great detail. Such as: "She wore a white turban, and the wind whipped her flowing robes about wildly." Also in this story, I could relate to Nancy. Some things she did, the actions she made, I would of done too; for instance, telling the police about the mystery she was trying to solve.
This book is about a young boy, named Rishi, who was the maharaja of India. He was kidnapped when an infant. The three people that kidnapped him wanted a different person to rule the land. Nancy's job was to find the culprits and arrest them. But it wasn't easy. Rishi's stepfather was after him, trying to kill him, because he knew too much. He kidnapped Rishi twice, almost killing him. Nancy doesn't know where to look for him. Also someone stole her charm with lifesaving fluids in it, which rishi would need to recover from his injuries. Will Nancy find her charm? Will Rishi ever be found?
I think anyone can read this book. Particularly people who like mysteries. And anyone who likes adventure and suspense.

This review concerns the original 1936 edition and the revised 1974 edition which is slightly different from the original but basically tells the same story. Nancy meets a young Indian boy (named Coya in the original, Rishi in the revised) who lives with a circus. The boy is being mistreated by a man named Rai who claims to be the boy's father, but Nancy doubts this claim. Nancy saves Rai from an elephant and to show his thanks he gives Nancy an ivory, elephant charm which he says can protect the wearer from harm. Coya/Rishi runs away from the circus and Rai and the Drews take him in. Later, Rai changes his mind and wants the charm back and he will do anything to get both the charm and Coya/Rishi. Also figuring into this "mystery" are a strange woman and a bizarre house out in the middle of the woods. The house, apparently, has no floor, but it does have a secret passage and a bunch of swings and trapezes hanging from the ceiling. This book was just plain awful!! The mystery, what there is of one, is stupid and boring. The house serves absolutely no purpose other than to use up pages and it makes no sense. Who would build a house like that out in the middle of nowhere? The strange woman in the book is more annoying than anything and comes off as too scatterbrained and weak-minded to be the great criminal mastermind that the plot requires her to be. The book has little in the way of action or suspence. This book is just bad, bad, bad! Take my advice and don't read it.
In this book, Nancy Drew goes to see a circus and feels sorry for a little boy who appears to be abused by his master. Nancy is surprised when he shows up at her home. He wears a mysterious ivory charm in the shape of an elephant that is supposed to protect the wearer from harm. He gives it to Nancy. She will surely need protection soon after, because she must investigate a mysterious hideout and missing jewels. Could it be that the mystery of the room in the cave and the shady circus are related? read to find out! I would also recommed buying the applewood books fascimle edition of this story. It is priced higher but it is the original story from the 30's. Buy both versions for some flavor and to see how the story was changed.

This book was purchased as a gift for a 12yr old girl who had started this series and was enjoying it. I was happy with the Merchant as the book was received within the time frame specified.
