The Charms first cd is reminicent of early Blondie. The hot blonde female singer and the ever present farfisa organ. It rocks a bit harder than those first few Blondie albums, but has a bit of the same light, fun feel.

We got left behind by the rock music(?) era. We prize melody and emotion above all and Friml composed some of the nicest. Well performed and recorded. Takes us back to the days when listening to music was prized for its ability to make you feel good.

Given what we know about Owen Wilson's subsequent career after this 1999 low-key serial killer flick, you may have a hard time not smirking a bit at his screen presence. It's the same here as in later flicks like "Wedding Crashers." The guy has one speed, evidently. Still, it's fun to watch Sheryl Crow and Dwight Yoakum acting instead of singing. The tale is downbeat, no gore. The ending is unlikely, though. Not a bad waste of time.
Vann Siegert (Owen Wilson) is a laid-back drifter. Approaching a small seaside town, he runs into heroin addict Laurie Bloom (Sheryl Crow) in a dive bar. Taking her for a drive, he offers her a drink from his special flask ... amaretto and poison. Leaving the body in a roadside restroom, he continues into town.

Once in town, Vann takes a room from the Durwins. Doug Durwin (Brian Cox, the best Hannibal Lector from 'Manhunter') takes to Vann immediately, but Jane Durwin (Mercedes Ruel, The Fisher King) is cold at first. Doug is quite fond of young HS football player Gene, and is deeply affected when Gene goes missing. Gene is a victim of Vann's, though Vann broke two of his own rules. (Don't give a drink to someone you know, and don't do anything in the town you live in) Doug gets Vann a job at the local Post Office, where Vann meets Ferrin (Janeane Garofalo), who smokes and drinks, two things Vann doesn't do. Vann and Ferrin hit it off anyway, and Vann settles into his new residence and new life. But there are parts of his old life he won't give up, and the killing continues.

'The Minus Man' is not a fast-paced thriller. It's a casual stroll through Vann's life, narrated by him, revealing his personal thoughts on life, other people, and killing. Vann suffers from fainting spells, in which two detectives from his past haunt him. Det. Blair (Dwight Yoakam, who proved he could act in 'Sling Blade') and Det. Graves (Dennis Haysbert) appear in his subconscious, asking questions about his reason for killing. Even Van himself is befuddled at some of his actions, and often uses humor instead of explanations in his answers.

Owen Wilson always plays such a laid-back role (Meet The Parents, Zoolander, Shanghai Noon, Shanghai Knights, etc.) that it was a surprise to see him cast as a serial killer. But the casual pace of the movie, combined with Vann's tranquil narration of his motives, is fully suited to Wilson's characteristic relaxed persona. The acting is very good and the characters are interesting. The plot is terrific and the twists surprising and inspired. This is a great movie to rent or buy. Enjoy!

Films about serial killers, in my humble opinion, have a tendency to be convoluted. They either use the gimmicks and glamor of Hollywood( Casting Selma Hayak as Martha Beck, the lovelorn nurse, hefty in girth, but not in morality)to seduce your sensibilities, or create an unpalatable monster( Laura Prepon as Karla Holmoka, a sadist with a beautiful face). Owen Wilson recreates the serial killer as a character. He placates you with a charming, articulate persona, then proceeds to blindside the viewer with acts of non-violent murder. He never attempts to justify his actions with rationality, or some purpose based complex. He is...as he says...empty. Its difficult for me to imagine a man like Owen Wilson as a serial killer. His face seems so open, and inviting, his kindness appears sincere and non-threatening. Perhaps this is the genius of the casting choice. He is the Elephant in the room, with his complete lack of emotional flux. For me, The Minus Man redefined the face of inhumanity, by showing us how the seemingly normal ones always fall through the cracks. Highly recommended.
great film - creative and creepy. filmed in a warm, calming manner that offsets the twisted behavior of the lead character. well worth a view.
This is one of those movies that you think will really be good. The storyline has enough to make you suspend your disbelief.
Owen Wilson is so cool.
The soundtrack is amazing as well.
"I've never done anything violent to anyone," says the mild-mannered Vann Siegert, "Just the minimum that was necessary." Indeed, if you have to get knocked off by a serial killer, Vann (Owen Wilson) is definitely your man. Just a quick, sweet swig from a silver flask of poisoned amaretto and you're out, with a narcoleptic slump into eternal slumber. There's no taunting or torturing; he's friendly about the whole thing. You can see Vann almost--almost--wishing his victims wouldn't take that final sip. He doesn't hold any particular grudge against these people; rather, as he puts it, "I take the natural momentum of a person and draw it toward me." If someone looks like they're on a crash course--like the boozy, asthmatic heroin addict played convincingly by Sheryl Crow, her acting debut--he merely accelerates the process.

Wilson proves to be a mesmerizing if unlikely serial killer, his flat, Midwestern delivery ringing more sincere than sinister, more Charlie Brown than Charles Manson. His voiceovers purportedly allow us into the mind of a killer, but what we hear isn't all that different from what we see. Vann isn't faking the nice-guy veneer, heisa nice guy, with this one little quirk. Clearly, this is not your typical edge-of-your-seat thriller, but the slow, dreamy pace is nonetheless entrancing. There are moments of intense grace and humor here, too. Janeane Garofalo breaks away from the smart-aleck mold to portray a postal employee smitten with Vann, and Mercedes Ruehl takes a compelling turn as his troubled landlady. "I like the detail of a thing," Vann says. "Especially if it's got a purpose." While we may not know for certain whether this film has a purpose, the details dare you to stop watching, even for an instant.--Brangien Davis

Based on the popular childrens' novel of the same name, by Frances Hodgson Burnett, this is a very engrossing story that in a way transcends being a childrens' story. It takes place in 1885, starting in New York City and moving across the pond to England after young Cedric Errol (Little Lord Fauntleroy) is told that he is now a lord and next in line to become Earl of Dorincourt. Cedric and his mother Dearest aren't exactly well-off, but Cedric doesn't want to leave at first, even knowing it will greatly improve their social and financial status, because of how attached he is to the city, how much he wants to become President when he grows up, so he can help the less fortunate, the horrible things he's been told earls do, and how devoted he is to his three closest friends, Hobbs, a storekeeper, Mrs. McGinty, who sells apples, and Dick, who blackens boots.

After moving to England, Cedric, now Lord Fauntleroy, is rather upset at how his mother is forced to live in a cabin outside of the main estate instead of there in the castle with him and his grandfather, the Earl of Dorincourt. "Grandfather Earl," as he calls him, never approved of the relationship Dearest and Cedric's father had, and originally didn't think very highly of Cedric himself either, but quickly lets down his reserve and finds himself incredibly charmed by his grandson. Cedric doesn't want to be the type of earl he's heard about back home, however, and uses his power and new position to help the less fortunate, like he would have done if he had become President when he was older. Things seem to be going swimmingly when all of a sudden it appears as though there might be another heir, with a more legitimate claim, which threatens to upturn the happy secure new life Cedric has made for himself. His friends back home, however, are positive this cannot be, and do some research to try to right things before it might be too late.

This is really a charming story, and also serves as wholesome family entertainment, despite the old-fashioned story (it does take place in the nineteenth century, and really reflects that different society and era), though it does seem a bit chatty at times for a silent film. That is to be expected, though, seeing as it was based on a book and not just created solely or primarily for the screen. The musical score is also very lovely, and the special effects are really something. Dual roles had been played before, but not the same way you see here, such as when Cedric kisses his mother. This was before they had computers; they had to create all of these special effects, seemingly primitive today, without help from high-tech machines. Although I have to agree that you can't really forget that Cedric is being played by a woman, as much as she really gets into the role and acts like a little boy. It was one thing for Mary Pickford to play little girls and teenagers, but in this role you never really forget that she's actually a woman and not a little boy, as good as she is at it. She just looks too pretty, too womanly, for people to completely suspend disbelief and after awhile just lose track of the fact that she is in fact a woman.
Little Lord Fauntleroy is an enjoyable Mary Pickford film. It is unusual not so much because she plays two roles, she had done that already in Stella Maris, but because she plays a boy. The story, adapted from Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic of a young American boy going to England to claim his inheritance, is well told with lots of humour and sentiment. Pickford does well in her two roles of mother and son and the way she interacts with herself on screen is a delight to watch, especially when one knows that these special effects were all done in the camera. Her acting in the part of Cedric can hardly be faulted. She throws herself, sometimes literally, into the part and does everything possible to transform herself into a little boy, but she is never truly convincing. This is not really the fault of her acting. Her mannerisms, her way of walking, her fights are all boyish, but she always looks just like Mary Pickford. In the end it has to be said that while Mary could transform herself into a little girl years younger than herself, she just could not make herself look like a little boy. She's far too beautiful and has too many curls. She remains, as always, the girl with the curls.

The black and white print on the Milestone DVD is pretty good. It seems to be complete and while there are quite a lot of scratches, this wear and tear is never really distracting. The image is clear and bright with a good amount of detail. I was generally pleased with how the film looks. The DVD has a good orchestral score by Nigel Holton, well played and appropriate to the mood of the film. As extras there are two photo galleries. Little Lord Fauntleroy may not be one of Pickford's very best films, but once you get used to Mary as a little boy, it becomes a lot of fun and essential viewing for her fans.

You can't go too wrong with a popular and much liked story like "Little Lord Fauntleroy" - the poor boy growing up in 19th century New York who learns he is heir to an earldom in England, and whose childlike charm and good-naturedness softens the heart of his embittered and grumpy grandfather. And who better to play the role than Mary Pickford who won the title of "America's Sweetheart" for her popular and pleasing personality, her impressive acting skills and roles that appeal to everyone. In "Little Lord Fauntleroy", Mary showcases her brilliant talent for playing children - both girls and boys - as well as her versatility by also playing the role of the little lord's mother. The camera work for these scenes - mother and little lord together - is perfect, and overall this film is faultless with sharp, clear picture quality and a most beautiful orchestral score perfectly matched to the film. The scenes of the old English castle, village and surroundings are also perfect and a pleasure to behold, but above all it's Mary Pickford's charming and charismatic portrayal of the unassuming and loving Lord Fauntleroy that makes this film a real winner. Her expressive pantomime skills really bring the role of the young Lord come to life, and you won't mind one bit that she looks much more like a girl than a young boy. Next to "Stella Maris" in which she also plays dual roles very impressively, this is the best Pickford film I've seen so far, and I'm hoping that the other Pickford releases that Milestone Films has planned for later this year will be similarly enjoyable. There are slide shows of stills and other memorabilia on this DVD as well, making it an excellent Mary Pickford edition, and one that will surely appeal to many viewers.
The 1921 version of LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY was one of Mary Pickford's biggest hits and it's easy to see why. It features her in a dual role as the little lord and his mother giving her the opportunity to showcase her acting talent in two very different roles as well as letting us see the two types of parts she would play for the rest of her career. While split-screen roles had been done many times before (Pickford even did it in 1918's STELLA MARIS) seldom has it been done as well as it is here. Not only are the double exposures perfect but the perspectives used really highlight the difference between child and adult.

Mary was one of the most powerful people in Hollywood at that time and she always worked with the best technicians available. The sets are stunning, the lighting equally memorable and Charles Rosher's cinematography is in a class by itself. The direction is credited to Alfred E.Green and Mary's brother Jack (according to Mary he was the inspiration for her portrayal of Fauntleroy) but you can be sure that she did a lot of it herself without credit. Claude Gillingswater as the old Earl of Dorincourt gives a marvelous performance every bit the equal of C. Aubrey Smith and Alec Guiness in later versions. As wonderful as Mary's child performance is, I never once thought of her as a boy (I'm sure audiences in 1921 didn't either) but she definitely was the character of Fauntleroy so it really doesn't matter. Her work as the mother is just as good showing that she could play adult roles when she gave herself the opportunity.

Sadly it is that aspect of her acting which has been forgotten over the years. Milestone's release this year of several Pickford films in restored editions to go along with those already available should help to rectify this oversight and return Pickford to her rightful place as one of the silent screen's top performers and not just "Little Mary", the good little girl caricature that most people think of her as today.

The film isn't perfect as some of Mary's concessions to her 1920's audience like the fight at the end seem out of place with the rest of the picture. Nevertheless LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY is the ideal introduction to Mary Pickford for those of you not familiar with her work while it gives those of us who are one of her best vehicles in beautiful condition. Special mention should be made of the fine orchestral score that Nigel Holton has provided for the film. Thanks again to Milestone Films and The Mary Pickford Foundation for making this and other Pickford releases available on home video.

This is a movie I had to make myself stay with for the first 20 minutes. I was rewarded with a nasty black comedy, some fine performances and a satisfying take on the worm-that-turns theme. Hugo (Hugo Metsers) and Goof (Roeland Fernhout) are two buddies in Amsterdam who pick up foreign backpackers, charm them, seduce them and then steal their money. They also rip out the women's picture pages from their passports as trophies, which they post in a sexual conquest shrine they have in the apartment they share. Hugo is the dominant one, cynical, cold-hearted and selfish. Goof goes along; he's a follower, a nice enough guy with an open grin and a fairly good heart. Then they meet Lara (Vlatka Simac), and the games really begin. She says she's Russian and draws such a picture of Siberia that Goof falls in love with her and wants to take her back there. She moves in with the two. Hugo doesn't like it, or her. Before long it's clear that Lara is playing games of her own...and it's unclear just who is being hustled.

Westdijk is a young Dutch director who gives this film all the fancy angles, fast cuts, flashes of black and white that fans of Run Lola Run and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels could wish for. The movie began working for me, finally, because of three things. First, the dawning realization that these two hustlers just may have met their match. Second, the performance of Vlatka Simac. She has big eyes, a calm face and manages to appear desirable and probably untrustworthy at the same time. Third, the performance of Roeland Fernhout. He really has a goofy, open smile. It's easy to like him even though what he does to the girls he and Hugo pick up is not very nice. When he falls for Lara, then realizes what the score really is, he pulls off a triple play which is funny and satisfying.

I wound up liking this movie, but it's one of those films, I think, that you need to give a chance to develop before making up your mind. The DVD picture and audio is fine. Although a good portion of the film is in Dutch with subtitles, much of the story also is in English, the common language Lara and Goof (and Hugo) can speak.

Robert Jan Westdijk's SIBERIA (Home Vision) is an edgy film about Dutch scam artists -- cavalier Hugo (Hugo Metsers) and his submissive sidekick Goof (Roeland Fernhout). They seduce and rob female backpackers visiting Amsterdam and then rip out the identity pages of their victims' passports as a souvenir in their private competition to collect IDs from around the world. They keep these mementos and the stolen loot in a cabinet shrine at Goof's place where they both live.

Things change quickly when they meet street smart Lara (Vlatka Simac), from Siberia. To Hugo's dismay, and against their self-proclaimed rules, Goof falls in love with Lara (who knows nothing of their crimes) and invites her to stay at their place. This creates problems with their ongoing scam. Soon, love sick Goof suggests to Hugo that the three use their ill-gotten gains for a trip to Siberia. Hugo says no, that he and Goof must continue their competition of seduction and robbery with the winner taking all the money. To say more would spoil this deliciously amoral and cynical story of greed, sex and deception. "Siberia" is a cold-hearted, funny and sometimes explicit film about a very twisted friendship.

Shot on location in Amsterdam, this great looking movie is artfully edited with time-lapse and grainy black and white moments. Junkie XL's urgent techno score reflects the amped images of the druggy city and the speedy, triangulating, twisty plot.

I've spent a lot of time with this movie, because I helped design the packaging. Even after the number of times I've watched it, I still enjoy it. Siberia is entertaining and interesting, not a movie you have to really think about to watch. It's definately something that 20-somethings will really enjoy, but that older audiences might find a little trite. It's a great flick to vege out too; total fluff.

Best friends Hugo and Goof set up a scam picking up female backpackers newly arrived in Amsterdam. They sleep with them, rob them, and then tear a page out of their passports to keep as a souvenir, since the boys' goal is to take a trip around the world from within Amsterdam. Their set-up is quickly threatened when seasoned traveler Lara enters the fray. Appropriately named, Goof immediately falls in love with her and becomes obsessed with the idea of taking her to Siberia to see the country of her childhood. Now that the rules of the game have changed between Hugo and Goof, life becomes very complicated for everyone involved in this fast-paced caper of who's hustling who?

The things she says are things I've heard spoken of in the family (Hungarian and Russian) but she's keeping a lot for herself. And so she should. It's been good to read about my heritage and the things I've felt intuitively, but it would appear to be something I need to learn from an actual live person. The other reviewer was probably right about her writing for the "gadje", you can't go and practice with what little she's written. Still, it piqued my interest and I will research the subject further. A good companion I found that went a bit further into Eastern European magic was Grandmother of TimeThe Grandmother of Time: A Woman's Book of Celebrations, Spells, and Sacred Objects for Every Month of the Year which is a much deeper look at traditional female spirituality.
Although I have some doubts about there being real Gypsies in the English countryside still living in wagons etc. , i have to to say that to best best of my (admittedly poor) knowledge Cooper provides some important information. The book lays out some of the basic stuff you might encounter when meeting your average Gypsy fortuneteller (palmistry, cards, spells) and has some eclectic information (such as runes etc) that clearly are Cooper's own special interest.

There is also some unsentimental advice on casting curses and protecting from them, clearly a major part of Romany existence. Cooper knows about energy and the stuff she talks about is clearly first-hand, which i appreciated.

Any claims that this work is too simple is, imo, misguided and a bit naive. The book is a treasure trove of information that many - including those working the ceremonial magic - will find interesting, if not useful. I recommend it.
This book is literally packed with stuff! There are several chapters on what we consider "typical" gypsy things, such as fortune telling through palms and tea leaves. But there are also chapters on energy, dream lore, luck, and creating little blessing bags called Parak-Tils. Peppered throughout are tidbits on the actual Gypsy people, particularly in England where the author is from. Worth buying if you're into Gypsy things or looking for a nice primer on fortune telling.
I am not Romani and bought this book hoping for some historical information on the Romani people, their culture, and ways. I enjoyed what the author had to say about her people and also some of the folk beliefs that were touched upon for the reader. I think I would have liked a little more information just as far as history goes and more on the language of the Romanies. All in all this is a pretty good book for some basic information.

Dunne is a fantastic and fun writer. This collection gets bogged down however. Many of the stories are dated and the updates are not recent. Many of the stories are reprinted in the far superior colleciton, Justice. Still, parts of this book, particularly the Gloria Vanderbilt story, stand out. If you like Dunne, I would start with Justice and move backwards. It is fun to read many of his stories do have something of a timeless quality. I was frustrated with parts of book which seemed dated and dull. Ahh..what do I know. Dunne is still great.
It's had been quite some time since I'd picked-up a book I couldn't put down, but this one ended the drought! It made me an instant Dominick Dunne fan and wishing that he'd continue the saga for the Bradley family in future novels. If you have ever been intrigued by the lifestyles of the rich and infamous, or the larger than life experiences of the Kennedy's, then click on the order button and prepare to curl up with this unforgettable story!
When I picked up Mr. Dunne's novel for my book collection of his amazing works, it was another week of neglecting my duties as a Mother to my starving children. Thank goodness for the microwave! I am a Vanity Fair subscriber and always will be due to Mr. Dunne's genius writing. Mrs. Litras.
I have enjoyed Dominick Dunne's novels (novels in disguise!), but this book has left me wishing I had been a Vanity Fair subscriber. I never realized what I had been missing, although I might have not read anything else in that magazine. I almost didn't order it, because I was disappointed with his previous work-The Way We Lived Then-which was exactly what he said it was, the recollections of a well-known name dropper, all names and not much content. However-this book is wonderful-and probably more so the recollections of a name dropper. Incredible true stories of the rich and famous, and maybe some not so famous, all intensely interesting. A number of the essays involve crime-beginning with his description of the trial of the man who killed his daughter, and including pieces on the Mendez brothers, O.J. Simpson, Claus Von Bulow, and more, told as only an"insider"could. Yet not all of the tales are crime related, so if you're looking for tabloid-style, tell all stories, this probably isn't the book for you. He tells the tales of high society with a touch of class, and I can't imagine that he has made many enemies, and probably remains in good favor with most of the people he has included in these pages. I finished the book wanting to go back and re-read several of my favorite stories, and wishing there was a sequel I could now continue with. Enjoy-I read it in 2 days.

I bought this for my then 7 year old daughter and she absolutely loved it. It's a great book to get young girls interested in reading on their own and started on chapter books.
How would you like to find out a deep secret about your grandmother? Well Jessica finds out a deep secret about her grandmother.
The book is called the Charm Bracelet by Emily Rodda. Jessica, Queen Jessica, Valda, Patrice, Maybelle, and Giff are the main characters in the book. Blue Moon is where the grandmother lives and Fairy Realm and it is Fantasy.
I feel about this book that the Charm Bracelet is a very good book and it is very descriptive throughout the book. There is a very bad problem; grandmother's bracelet has disappeared. Also Valda tries to take over Fairy Realm. Solution is that Jessica goes to Fairy realm to find the bracelet and tricks Valda.
Jessica goes to Blue moon to visit her grandmother. Jessica notices that her grandmother's bracelet is missing. She looks for the bracelet for a long time, and then she ends up in Fairy Realm. She finds out that Valda has replaced Queen Jessica. Then Jessica plans to trick Valda. That's all I can tell you. My connection to this book is that Jessica Was scare when she found herself in the realm and so would I.

Anyone who loves to imagine will get pulled into this book. The first book in the Fairy Realm series, The Charm Bracelet by Emily Rodda, is set in both Blue Moon And Fairy Realm. The problem begins when Granny loses her charm bracelet.

In the beginning Granny loses her charm bracelet that helps her remember to go back to Fairy Realm, where she is a queen and renew the magic of the hedge that keeps all goblins and ogers out. Next, Jessie Granny`s grandaughter gets pulled into fairy Realm and tries to figure out who stole Granny`s bracelet. To find out who stole Granny`s bracelet and if the magic of the hedge gets renewed in time, grab a copy of The Charm Bracelet now.

The message the author wants me to learn is to always be brave, care for each other and always try to reach out and help. This book reminds me of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Girls ages 8-10 in 3rd and 4th grade will love this book. If you enjoy the Charm Bracelet try the rest of the Fairy Realm series and more by Emily Rodda.

I read this seperately to my 5 and 7-year old girls and they both loved it. The story is simple enough for young kids to follow, with descriptive passages that are enough to create a realistic feeling to the story, but not so long to tax kids' attention spans.

The imaginative fairy-tale type elements and situations of the story are perfect for firing young kids' imaginations, but the author avoids violence, and overly suspensefull/stressful situations. It should be noted that in this first "Fairy Realm" book, unlike the others, there is actually a "bad guy" (or girl, rather). The other books involve overcoming hardships, troubles, difficult situations rather than an opposing person.

Overall, a wonderful, easy-to-read story that kids from preschool age to young-elementary school age will love (proably girls more so than boys). If I had to guess I'd say it's written at a 3rd or 4th grade reading level.

Young Jessie is absolutely ecstatic when her Mother takes her to the beautiful Blue Moon to visit her beloved Grandmother. However, while there, Jessie discovers a wonderful secret, and enters a Realm located in the Secret Garden. There, Jessie finds a beautiful land filled with magical creatures of all shapes and sizes. Fairies, miniature horses, elves, and other magical beings live among the Realm. And while the creatures are able to enjoy nature and run free, there is a noble Queen who lives in a gorgeous golden castle, and rules over them all. Now Jessie has found out that the Realm is in grave danger, and it is up to her, and her sick Grandmother to save it from an evil enemy before it's destroyed forever as we know it.

In this first installment in the FAIRY REALM series, readers are able to enter an exciting world where magical beings run free, and where humans are scarce. Jessie is a wonderful character, who is sweet, while at the same time extremely adventurous, and the descriptions throughout the book are vivid, and enchanting, and will capture the reader from page one. Filled with various black and white drawings throughout, this book is sure to become a treasure to any family. Especially those who truly believe.
