Like the first volume, we have a beautiful tenor voice treating us to some rarely heard arias from operas not often performed outside of Russia. Grishko has good control of his voice which is a somewhat light and agile one that is free from strain. Probably the only familiar pieces to non-Russian listeners would be the brief orchestral excerpts from Glinka's A LIFE FOR THE TSAR and Polovtsian March from Borodin's PRINCE IGOR so listening is a treat in and of itself.
The two strengths of this recording are similar to those of the first volume: there is a variety to the music on the disc and Grisko's overall performance. While this is a good disc, it is not quite as strong as the first collection. The orchestral performances are somewhat inconsistent. Also the selections themselves do not have a great impact, at least in comparison with those of the first set. Still, this recording at a price that is more than reasonable will add variety to any operatic library. 』

The film's characters are more provincial than hayseed, and a well-written screenplay supplies interest within a viewer for each. Sprightly Canova is always enjoyable to watch in action, and she is ably backed here by a talented supporting cast of largely seasoned actors, Richard Deacon gaining performing honours for his astringently humourous turn as an avaricious bank official attempting to foreclose upon Judy's ranch for his personal financial benefit, while even the three children cared for by Canova play smoothly, closely coached by director Lamont.』

(Typical 50s Comedy) 『I have not seen the DVD, so this review is from a VHS tape that was released some years ago. The star of this movie is Judy Canova, who had a radio show in the late 40s. In her radio show, Judy played a hillbilly who ended up in Hollywood - as such, that show was the predecessor to the Beverly Hillbillies. In Lay That Rifle Down, Judy owns a ranch and has taken in three orphans. She has trouble keeping up the mortgage payments and has to work at a hotel in the city to make ends meet. The bank manager is trying to foreclose on the ranch and the hotel owner drives Judy like a slave. On top of that, Judy is trying to find a man to marry and is using a correspondence course to look cultured to achieve this end. Being teased about the course and her attempts at improving her appearance, Judy lies and says she already has a boyfriend. Pressed with this, Judy gets a passenger just off the bus to pose as her boyfriend. This man takes to the role a bit too enthusiastically and it is revealed he is a con man taking advantage of a great opportunity to run a scam. How Judy deals with all this is what drives the story. The movie does wrap this up with a by today's standards contrived chase and the expected last laugh at the end. One of the funny moments in the film is seeing Judy's attempt at applying makeup per the instructions in the correspondence course. Other moments deal with an elevator that needs fixing (did they ever work like that?) and bringing hot water to the rooms (I guess the hotel had no running water in the rooms). The production and story are standard 50s fare. This is a nice family movie, with the unsophistication of the 50s.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (This Anemic Psycho-Sexual Horror From Hammer Provokes Little Fear) 『According to the liner notes provided by Anchor Bay for "Straight On Till Morning," Hammer House was in a financial slump in 1972. Hoping to correct the situation, Michael Carreras envisioned a double bill of psychological horror films made on a low budget. Both "Fear in the Night" and "Straight on Till Morning" involved women who are terrorized by killers. Released together under the heading of "Women In Terror," the movies fared poorly at the box office. Let's discuss "Straight on Till Morning."
This film has an excellent premise. Rita Tushingham stars as a homely, young woman who lives in a fantasy world. She writes children's stories about princesses being rescued by knights in shining armor. She travels to swinging London and meets Shane Briant. In her eyes, he is a prince. Unfortunately, we learn through a series of flashbacks that he seduces women and kills them for their money.
Shane Briant was excellent in "Demons of the Mind" because he looks anemic and sickly. He portrayed a young man who is kept locked in his bedroom. In "Straight on Till Morning," he still looks weak and pale faced and I can't imagine anyone but the loneliest being attracted to him. (A blind person could mistake the moles on his face for Braille.) One gorgeous young woman practically leaps into bed with him and is stabbed to death while still in his arms. How wimpy Briant was able to dispose of her body and quickly clean up the mess before Tushingham arrived home is unbelievable. A genuine Euro stud such as Jean Sorel, Fabio Testi, or George Hilton should've been cast in lieu of Briant.
Where was Briant hiding the bodies? Most all of the killing is implied or done off screen. There is virtually no gore. The lackluster ending had a lot of screaming that was more annoying than frightful.
"Straight on Till Morning" is too slow and anemic for modern audiences. Rita Tushingham's excellent performance is not enough to warrant watching this film. It is only recommended for Hammer Production completists. Please rent before paying a huge price for an out of print copy. It is so not worth it. 』
(A surprise from Hammer) 『For fans of Hammer, this film comes highly recommended.Set in modern London (1972), those familiar with the period Hammer pieces might expect a somewhat confused plot or hard to follow story. Whlie such Hammer films are still enjoyed by many, pleasingly, this is not the case here. This one should easily hold your attention from start to finish, and is truly a departure for Hammer, being a rather modern story, in a modern setting. For purposes of comparison, Fear In The Night comes closest, but Straight on Till Morning has a far better story to tell, is much clearer, and is therefore more rewarding. A genuinely enjoyable, substantial, and frightening thriller- you'll spend the length of the film trying to figure out the extent of madness to which Shane Briant's character has fallen into- not to mention wondering when, and if Rita Tushingham's character is about to be murdered by him. I was expecting a fairly average Hammer film with this one, but got much more. Really interesting and unique piece for Hammer fans.』

And yet there's something out of control about this picture, something authentically weird. In one scene Tushingham pretties herself up in what may be the ugliest make-over in screen history. Yet this is a nicely illustrated, well-packaged, interesting collection of factoids. Filled with trivia, history, idea starters, and more, it makes a nice read and a good gift.
Did you know that John J. Audubon perfected his signature style in NOLA? That the St Charles Streetcar Line is the oldest in the world? That the giant, ancient live oaks grow about 1.5 inches in girth per year? Hundreds of those....
I could quibble with some of it, but these are minor points: Uptown was not settled in teh early 1900s, but 20 years earlier; the Faubourgs were indeed ORIGINALLY 'suburbs' but they are within the city limits and today are just as 'urban' as the areas closer to the river, NOLA is more "Creole" than "Cajun" (there's a difference), etc. And there are plenty of very obvious omissions.
But overall, this is a great little book.』

It is about three generations of women. The writing is mostly minimalist and told in generalizations. There is no real substantive connection with any of the char- acters.
The grandmother is an herbal medicine woman who is a legend in the south. She is big-mouthed, direct and honest. She interacts with her granddaughter who worships her. The mother is a woman without spirit and portrayed as a shadow figure.
I recommend that you try an earlier book by Gibbons such as 'Ellen Foster'.』

(Beautifully Written) 『I have read and enjoyed Kaye Gibbons' other works ("Ellen Foster", "A Cure for Dreams", and "Sights Unseen") and I think, with the possible exception of "Ellen Foster" that she has outdone even herself. The characters- grandmother Clarissa "Charlie Kate" Birch, a self-taught alternative healer, mother Sophia, the most romantic of the family, and main character and daughter Margaret, practical, intelligent, yet romantic- are unique, they stand out from the average woman of the 1930s-1940s of the South. Yet at the same time, they have the same basic desire, to be loved and respected, as anyone else. Gibbons' portrayal of Charlie Kate as eccentric yet admired by the community for her healing work showed that one does not necessarily need to follow the mainstream in order to be successful and happy. Reading "Charms for the Easy Life" in fact made me kind of wish I had the education and skills to be an alternative healer.』

Perhaps these signs also have magickal meaning as a ward or protection. The term"hex"means a magic spell in German, and"hexen"means witch.
