(The Cream of the Crop) 『Novices to Hawkwind have the Herculean task of deciding which of the 113 or so releases (of which around 80 are compilations and live albums) clocked up by the band they should start with. Well look no further. QS&C is widely recognised as Hawkwind's masterpiece. The"All Killer, No Filler"tag certainly applies here - all the tracks are outstanding The music, Rob Calvert's lyrics, the sound - all top drawer. In fact, I would venture to suggest that Hawkwind was not quite the same without Mr. Calvert as he added a degree of intelligence and wit to the band that, without him, could at times sound a bit moronic. Compare the brilliant sci-fi clone song Spirit of the Age ("If you had ever seen us, you'd rejoice in your uniqueness and consider every weakness, something special of your own") with, say Silver Machine from the earlier Calvert-less line-up ("I've got a silver machine, and I'm feeling mean"). I know a lot of Hawkwind fans like the mindlessness of the early stuff but I would strongly advise anybody starting out with Hawkwind to check out this album. Don't take my word for it, listen to the Amazon.com samples.』

Lately I was exploring the classic bolero "La historia de un amor". I must've found some 50 odd versions of it and was almost wrapping up on it, when I wandered to the Quintango website and chanced upon a clip of a tango-ized version of this song by Quintango. I knew I'd found a rare gem. I must've played the clip some 20-30 times over! Quintango's version of it heavenly, and can instantly trigger a flood of emotions, and I know Ive found a gem. I'm on my way to purchasing all their CDs.』

HBO's The Wire was marvelous, but was superseded in realism by Charm City, in my opinion. Charm City focused more on the depiction of some of the highly relevant inner city issues. There was more than just a focus on generalizing and focusing on a drug trade or a criminal problem.
Charm City brought to the forefront relevant issues that are quite prevalent and pervasive yet often looked at with semi-blinders on because of the universally felt pain in looking at the reality of the ominous truths regarding AIDS and the surreal reactions to contracting it in conjunction with promiscuity and other inner city issues.
Another facet of the inner city (Baltimore, Md., my hometown) looked at was the reasons and causes as to why so many people continually return through the cycle of interdependence to prison in an attempt to escape from a society in which they feel doomed.

(Angieville: CHARM CITY) 『CHARM CITY picks up a few months after the events of Baltimore Blues: A Tess Monaghan Novel (Tess Monaghan Mysteries). Tess is still living above her Aunt Kitty's bookshop, and the endearing musician/bookseller Crow seems to have worn down some of Tess' reservations about a possible relationship. She's even relented enough to accept a job as an apprentice investigator for the curmudgeonly lawyer/rowing instructor Tyner. But this unusually "normal" period doesn't last long, as the editors of the Beacon-Light hire Tess to investigate a case of a reporter undermining the system, publishing a controversial article that was never meant to run. In no time, the subject of the article turns up dead. An apparent suicide. Tess follows the trail through the ranks of the newspaper, convinced the suicide was, in fact, murder. Several secondary characters get some great fleshing out in this second volume, notably Tess' best friend (and crack reporter) Whitney and the always awesome Crow. I am now completely hooked on this series and thrilled to find there are, count them, seven more to go. Bring on the fun.』
(A great follow-up) 『CHARM CITY appeals to me even more than the murder mystery that kick-started this series, BALTIMORE BLUES, because it deals with one of my personal favorite issues: journalism ethics in a constantly-changing world. While CHARM CITY is clearly a few years behind us - they're still debating the importance of the internet, for example, while the debate is LONG over out here in the real world - it deals with the issues we all face, the philosophy of a newspaper as objective purveyor of information while also an impassioned watchdog for the people. That's not an easy line to walk.
The only place CHARM CITY fails is in its predictability. Alas, I pegged the whodunit far too early. I also am bothered by some of the gender stereotypes - aside from Tess herself, the women tend to be conniving and heartless, and the men lecherous dogs. Lippman's cynicism shows a little more clearly than in BALTIMORE BLUES, alas.
But even if you haven't the slightest interest in journalism ethics or the philosophy of news reporting, you'll still find CHARM CITY a fascinating whodunit. Tightly written, smart and fast-paced, I strongly recommend Lippman to any mystery fan.』
(Great Read, unexpected ending) 『As usual, Laura Lippmann has done a great job of writing the adventures of Ms. Tess Monaghan. This is a nice book to read, it's fun, easy and you'll probably not guess the ending.

(More Clunky Than Charming) 『The first Tess Monaghan book left me relatively unimpressed, the pacing was sluggish, the writing clunky, the heroine more annoying than engaging, and the plotting sometimes awkward. All in all it was a pretty mediocre (though not outright bad) debut, but the Baltimore setting and generally effusive praise the series has gotten was enough to make me try the next in the series to see if Lippman had improved.
Set soon after the events of Baltimore Blues, this book finds Tess still living above her aunt's bookstore, still sharing a bed with her younger musician boyfriend Crow, and halfheartedly working as an investigator for a lawyer. A meeting with a friend from her days working as a newspaper reporter is the catalyst for her latest adventure. It involves the effort to bring pro basketball to Baltimore, and the shady background of the prime mover and shaker in this effort. Somehow, a muckraking piece on his life winds up in the paper, despite having been killed editorially, and Tess is brought in to try and figure out who did it and how.
This becomes a bit more important when the subject of the article turns up dead of an apparent suicide. As Tess pokes around the newspaper and its computer system, she also investigates one of the reporters, the suicide, and more and more. Meanwhile, there's also a subplot involving Tess's uncle, who is beaten into a coma, for reasons no one can work out. He also left a greyhound in her care, whom she names Esskay (after the local hot dog brand) and becomes an important character in his own right.
Unfortunately, Tess continues to fail to engage me as a heroine. She flails around for the truth, bumbling along full of self-pity and bitterness, lucky to be alive at the end. It doesn't help matters that the book switches away to third-person narration for some scenes. Oddly, despite Lippman's career as a newspaper journalist, some of the plotting concerning the newspaper and its operations seems very artificial and false. Finally, traditional mystery readers will find it annoying that there really aren't the clues in place for the reader to deduce "whodunnit." I'm not getting what it is that others seem to love about this series, and I'm not sure I'm willing to spend time on a third book to find out.』 『
As a practiced reporter until her newspaper went to that great pressroom in the sky, P.I. Tess Monaghan knows and loves every inch of her native Baltimore, even the parts being slobbered on by the sad-sack greyhound she's minding for her uncle. It's a quirky city where baseball reigns, but lately homicide seems to be the second most popular local sport. Business tycoon "Wink" Wynkowski is trying to change all that by bringing pro basketball back to town, and everybody's rooting fro him--until a devastating, muckraking expose of his lurid past appears on the front page of the Baltimore Beacon-Light. It's a surprise even to the Blight's editors, who thought they'd killed the piece. Instead, the piece killed Wink--who's found in his garage with the car running.
Now the Blight wants to nail the unknown computer hacker who planted the lethal story, and the assignment is right up the alley of a former newshound like Tess. But it doesn't take long for her to discover deeper, darker secrets, and to realize that this situation is really more about whacking than hacking. It's just murder in Baltimore these days--and Tess Monaghan herself might be next on the list.

I really liked the sealed spells presented in this book. I thought that was a great idea of the publisher.
Overall, the information that was presented, I thought was excellent! I refer to this book from time to time. The reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because of the following reason:
1. Not enough spells .... The book concentrated on a lot of pretty pictures, when they could have included more spells. This probably helped the book sell a lot more copies, but content wise, it suffered because of this because more spells could have been included. The book is very pleasing to the eye though!
It has been a while since I have seen anything new on the market from the author ... I hope that she continues to write more in the future.
