(A VERY laidback Crowes album. Took some time to grow on me.)

While I've been a die-hard fan of the Black Crowes since day 1, it took me a long time to like this album. Compared to the first three albums, and especially the follow-up "By Your Side", "Three Snakes and One Charm" is incredibly laidback. It seems strange that this is the same exact line-up that gave us the band's magnum opus "Amorica".

"Laidback" is really the best way I can describe it. There's no shortage of slow numbers here. Even with the few upbeat numbers like "Let Me Share the Ride" (featuring the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, an opener of theirs on tour), "Blackberry" and "One Mirror Too Many", there's still a strange looseness and lax feel to the playing. It's hard to put into words. But as Chris Robinson said in an interview at the time, while "Shake Your Money Maker" might be more of a "Friday night" album, this one is more of a "Sunday afternoon".

I had a real hard time getting into this album when I bought it. It just didn't grab me the way that the others did. I kept returning to it every once in a while, and eventually grew to really love some of the songs. The loud guitar-driven "Nebakanezer" is still one of my favorites, and "How Much For Your Wings" is a beautifully catchy ballad. "Girl from a Pawnshop" has a nice country ballad feel to it.

The rereleased version (which was included in the "Sho 'Nuff" box set and also released separately) includes the two B-sides "Just Say You're Sorry" and "Mellow Down Easy". It also acts as a multi-media CD and contains the video for "Blackberry". Die-hard collectors might be curious to know that there was also a limited edition release as a box of vinyl 45s.

While the Black Crowes were always compared to bands like Rolling Stones and Faces when they started, the truth is that they always had a diverse number of influences, and their sound evolved from album to album. So in retrospect, a change like this wasn't too surprising. One paradox of many Black Crowes fans is that what we want from the Crowes is them doing what THEY themselves want to do, not necessarily what the public wants.
This band understands rock n' roll for all it's depth. I truly believe that if they had been a 70's band they would be considered in the same league as The Stones and Skynyrd. Of course, they're much more musically talented than bands such as The Beatles, but that's pretty obvious to anyone who loves bands who actually have the balls to play live rather than just hide behind their celebrity status. I'm so glad they're out there again preaching the doctrine of soulful music. Every album they've ever put out has been a masterpiece and this is no exception.
Hmmm, Black Crowes...well...
To me, and obviously to a lot of other people, Black Crowes music is very influenced by Rolling Stones but Stones have something that Black Crowes lack - it takes more than pot, attitude and a slobby approach to be a rock and roll band. Of course they managed to perform one or two great numbers every once in a while, but mostly it's rather boring and the vocals can really annoy you. This release includes NO great tune at all, the only decent one is "Just say you're sorry". The rest is awful!

Once I had four Black Crowes albums. First I sold "Amorica", and now is this one "Three snakes..." in the pile for cd's to be sold. That leaves me with "The southern harmony..." and "By your side"...for the moment...
THREE SNAKES AND ONE CHARM once again show the BLACK CROWES evolving their sound, while still being able to still show their influences. Yes, it does sound different than their first two albums, but different doesnt mean worse. Yes, you have to give this album a few listens to get used to it, but I think thats what makes this album good. UNDER A MOUNTAIN and GOOD FRIDAY, help to start the album off. These songs are slow with some good melodies and I think that Chris Robinson's vocals sound real well on this songs. GOOD FRIDAY just might be the best song from this album. NEBERKANEZER has a rough sounding, rockin beat that rocks. Another hit. ONE MIRROR TOO MANY, and BLACKBERRY are just straight rockin songs that are also hits. GIRL FROM A PAWNSHOP is another ballad type song that once again shows off the vocal abilities. I also like the organ playing on this one, way to go Ed!!! I also recommend that you give a listen to (ONLY) HALFWAY TO EVERYWHERE, BRING ON, BRING ON, LET ME SHARE THE RIDE, BETTER WHEN YOURE NOT ALONE, and the bonus tracks JUST SAY YOURE SORRY and MELOW DOWN EASY. Out of the 14 songs, there were only a couple that I couldnt really get into, but this is still a great album and it does deserve some merit.
I dont understand why so many people and critics give this album down the road. This is a terrific album and is a great contrast to the big hits of the earlier Southern Harmony... Whats wrong with a band changing up their sound a little. Anyway the album opens with a great song in Under a Mountain. My favorite on the cd is Girl from a Pawnshop. Overall, a great cd and really shows how creative musically the Black Crowes really are. I recommend this to all Black Crowes fans that need something different from the Crowes or just any classic rock fan.

(Probably the worst Figgs CD but not terrible; get their new live CD instead!)

(The Figgs are back and better than ever!)

I love everything these guys do and it's sad that inferior bands like Coldplay, Radiohead, and just about everyone else are making millions while these guys play to a cult. This CD is probably their weakest production and songwriting wise, and when I first heard it, I thought it was the end of the road.

Fortunately, they rebounded with the double album Palais which is their best record ever.

After you get Palais, go on their website and get Continue To Enjoy The Figgs, Vol 1, which is a live record recorded in guitarist Mike Gent's basement and has lively versions of several songs off of the last few records played in front of true fans. Enjoy!
One of the best bands, you probably never heard of until now! The Figgs hail from Saratoga, New York with their 3rd album off the Hearbox label (5th album overall). Their sound can best be described as catchy power-pop punk. Some off my favorite songs off this album are:"Back to Being","Sit and Shake", and"Lose the Pain". The songs:"Static","Metal Detector", and"The Trench"are sure to be hits! This CD is a must!

(The Other Side of The High Noon Coin)

A town marshal is shot and killed while pursuing a group of fleeing bank robbers. Community pillar Ben Cutler (Fred MacMurray) reluctantly agrees to become the new marshal. Cutler, a member of the outlaw-chasing posse, wounds and apprehends the trigger man, bad boy Eddie `The Kid' Campbell (Robert Vaughn.)
With Vaughn as a troubled youth - he never had a chance given the way he growed up - and MacMurray the middle aged, moral man at odds with the apathetic town he defends, think of GOOD DAY FOR A HANGING as a mixture of The Blackboard Jungle and High Noon, with a shady defense attorney and an extended courtroom scene thrown in for good measure.
The 1950s were the decade of message westerns, or a least westerns with a social sense and an accusatory finger to point. 1959's GOOD DAY FOR A HANGING isn't as strident as some of that era, but it's serious in its way, flaying a bit of the flesh of the fickle and apathetic townfolks while deifying the last honest man. Fortunately, GOOD DAY possesses the reassuringly mellow presence of MacMurray as the man behind the badge, calming whatever worries we may have harbored that GOOD DAY will get too carried away with whatever message it's trying to deliver.
My expectations were fairly modest for GOOD DAY FOR A HANGING, and I'm happy to say I wasn't disappointed (wasn't pleasantly surprised, though, either.) A traditional western with a competent cast, recommended especially for fans of the genre.

Good Day For A Hanging features Fred MacMurray in what is more of a character drama than a standard Western. MacMurray plays Ben Cutler, a former Marshall who gets caught up in the aftermath of a bank robbery gone wrong. A gang of bank robbers botches what was otherwise a well planned robbery of the town bank, only to be chased out of town by the Marshall and a makeshift posse. During the chase the Marshall is shot and killed, with all of the posse as witnesses. The shooter, Eddie "the Kid" Campbell, is wounded, but relatively unharmed before he is brought back to town.

It is here that the movie shifts to a solid character drama, as a prominent defense attorney shows up to take Campbell's case. Campbell grew up in the town and the attorney begins to plant the seed of reasonable doubt in the members of the posse - leading to a conflict with Cutler. Campbell is convicted on the strength of Cutler's testimony, but the townspeople begin to doubt Cutler's motives as they wonder if there really was enough evidence to convict the Kid. A movement in town grows to try to get the Kid's sentence commuted to life in prison, creating a conflict with Cutler, who is determined to see the sentence carried out.

Good performances from MacMurray and Robert Vaughan (as Campbell) help Good Day For A Hanging become as entertaining and engrossing as it is. The dialog and laid back style are very much in line with some TV Westerns, but it's all just a cut above that level. The direction from Nathan Juran is good, and sometimes inspired, and the cast does a good job of portraying a very tight-knit, family oriented town where everyone knows each other.

While Good Day For A Hanging isn't at the level of the best Westerns from the 50's (like Winchester '73, The Searchers, Warlock, Last Train from Gun Hill, The Man From Laramie, etc), it is still a good movie and well worth your time if you are a fan of the genre.

At the end of the decade of the 1940s Columbia Pictures was producing and releasing both Gene Autry and Durango Kid series "B" Westerns, and doing well with them. During the 1950s, Columbia upgraded to more expensive fare, and produced a number of fine color Westerns with such solid actors as Randolph Scott, Fred MacMurray, and others. GOOD DAY FOR A HANGING was one of several that MacMurray did for Columbia (also notable is FACE OF A FUGITIVE), and it's a very good one. MacMurray has a unique style in just about everything he does (as anyone who remembers "My Three Sons" will recall!)--more meditative and quizzical, but always likeable. He shines in GOOD DAY FOR A HANGING, and manages to convey a resolve and determination that is also at the same time very human. This is no super-hero, but rather a man of real emotions, and thus identifiable with most viewers. In the end MacMurray's reasoned determination, albeit tested severely, is proven correct.

Production values and print quality are excellent; Columbia (Sony) continues to release some fine Westerns from the 1940s and '50s (e.g., THE VIOLENT MEN, LUST FOR GOLD, JUBAL, COWBOY, THE DESPERADOES, HANGMAN'S KNOT, several of the Durango Kid series, etc.), and GOOD DAY FOR A HANGING is one of the better ones.
Fred MacMurray starred in several westerns in the fifties, and "Good Day for a Hanging", released in 1959, is an engrossing "duster" that holds your attention throughout. It raises issues such as capital punishment, loyalty, duty, family and the nature of justice.

A gang of outlaws holds up a bank and escapes, with the popular town marshall and a posse in hot pursuit. During a shoot-out in the hills, the marshall is shot dead by one of the gang. The youngest member of the gang, Eddie Campbell ( Robert Vaughn in a terrific performance ), is wounded and brought back to town by the posse. Posse-member, Ben Cutler ( Fred MacMurray ), is sure that young Eddie is the outlaw who shot the marshall, although he convinces townspeople that there should be a fair trial, rather that a quick lynching. Ben reluctantly agrees to take over as marshall, which soon causes problems with his bride-to-be, Ruth Granger ( attractive Maggie Hayes ), and his daughter, Laurie ( petulant Joan Blackman) who has a crush on Eddie
( Ben is a widower ). This, however, is a horse opera not a soap opera--there are fisticuffs, gunfights, a very tense trial scene and an excellent showdown at the end of the film.

Today I suspect most people remember Fred MacMurray as the affable and immensely likeable star of TV's "My Three Sons", and a number of Disney films. Film buffs know that,in fare such as "Double Indemnity" and "The Apartment", Mr. MacMurray could also be effective in less sympathetic roles. In "Good Day", he certainly has an edge to his performance, and gives us a convincing western hero. In addition to the intense Mr. Vaughn, we have a "pre-Virginian" James Drury as Dr. Ridgely, doting on Laurie Cutler, but unable to distract her from her obsession with young Eddie. Western fans will spot such actors as Denver Pyle, Gregg Barton, William Fawcett, Harry Lauter and the ubiquitous Tom London in supporting roles.

I see that the movie was produced by Charles H. Schneer and directed by Nathan Juran, better known for their collaboration with stop-motion effects master, Ray Harryhausen.

I found the widescreen, colour picture quality to be excellent--the sound typical for films of this vintage.

If you like westerns, Fred MacMurray may not be the first name you would think of. However, he was a fine actor, and was right at home throwing punches or lead ! "Good Day for a Hanging" delivers a "good" ninety minutes of western suspense and excitement. Recommended.
A Good Day For A Hanging, a solid and entertaining Western, bookends nicely with a much more heralded 50's Western, High Noon. High Noon, in addition to dealing with courage and personal responsibility, dealt with the problems of enforcing law in a society that is afraid to protect itself from imminent criminal activity. This film deals with the frustrations of properly punishing criminals once they are caught.

Fred MacMurray stars as a store owner who joins a posse chasing bank robbers. One of the bank robbers is a young punk played by Robert Vaughn, who also is very friendly with McMurray's young daughter. During the ensuing chase, the elderly and much loved town sheriff is killed by Vaughn, who is in turn shot and captured by McMurray and the posse.

MacMurray becomes acting sheriff, and pushes forth the prosecution of Vaughn. But to MacMurray's utter amazement, the town begins to sympathize with Vaughn,to the point that no one wants to believe that he is guilty. MacMurray's dogged pursuit of justice causes him strained relations with everyone in the town (especially his daughter) except the young town doctor, played by James Drury.

Well acted and written, this film continues where High Noon left off by indicting those who are always screaming for law and order, but do not have the will to enforce it. It is great that this film is being released on DVD.
As a youth eddie came into town with his gang to rob the bank but was caught&convicted. Marshal ben helped him to become an honorable citizen. Many years later the gang returns to rob the bank. When they shoot the marshal. Eddie is the only one to identify the murderer - but questions who he should be loyal to. FYI, the photo on the website does not match the product. the bracelet is MUCH darker burnished grey/pewter silver color. the ratings for how much fun and educational value do not apply IMO. the bracelet itself is grey PLASTIC but the charms are heavier metal. the charms are cool, the bracelet part not so much. a more complete description would be fairer to purchasers of this bracelet or ones like it. my tween twilighter is undecided--will probably return it.

Inspector Andie Darling is hoping to prove Logan Sinclair is a fake and move up in the ranks of the police department. Logan is known around the world as a clairvoyant, but what is not reported is how he defrauds women of some of their earthly goods. She goes undercover to catch the thief, but gets more than she bargained for.

Logan Sinclair traveled from Scotland to take care of some business. Meeting Andie wasn't in his plans. He keeps to himself, but Andie captures his attention. Sure he can shake her out of his system, he does everything he can to put her off, but instead he finds himself needing her.

Andie finds herself wanting to believe in Logan, but then she finds herself getting blackmailed - bring down Logan, or else. Add in her eerily realistic "dreams" of a woman who died 100 years ago, and Andie doesn't know where to turn.

Killer Charms is a well-layered story, with suspense, drama and romance. The characters are fully three-dimensional, with complicated emotions and reasons for everything they do. The love story is believable and handled with finesse.

Killer Charms has is part of the Darling Detective stories, and I can't wait to find the others and read them as quickly as I read this one.

I haven't read a Marianne Stillings book I didn't adore&I have read them all. The Port Henry and Darling Detective Trilogies are original, entertaining&have everything I am looking for in a great story: charismatic characters, romance, mystery, humor and I love the paranormal twist. In order to get out of Vice and into homicide where her grandfather, father and brothers had all made their names, SFPD Detective Andie Darling needs to get the dirt on supposed clairvoyant and con man Logan Sinclair. Yet there's something about the Scotchman that has her intrigued, more than she should be. But when she finds herself being blackmailed by a superior into manufacturing dirt on the handsome clairvoyant or risking not only her career but her older brother's as well, Andie suddenly finds herself in more turmoil than she ever imagined.

Logan Sinclair is a `famed' clairvoyant who rose to fame with several celebrated books. Now he's using his supposed gift to help line his pockets with jewels and cash, and he has his eyes on the `Star of Avril' necklace and the beautiful Drew Mochrie. But Logan is more than a conman, in truth, he turned off his true gift at age nineteen after an accident that killed his parents and he learned to block his abilities. But when he walks into the mansion Andie is renting, he's suddenly assaulted with voices, real voices from the other side that have a message for Andie. The woman she was dreaming about was quite real.

Featuring one of the best lines I've read lately, "I'm half American." "Which half?" KILLER CHARMS is a contemporary romance with a twist of paranormal and suspense that will keep the reader on the edge of their seat as the story picks up its pace. I liked Logan and Andie together and the banter between them. One of my favorite parts of the book is when Logan, deciding he needs to push Andie away, takes her out to dinner at a Scottish restaurant, and orders her traditional food, without telling her what is until she`s ready to eat. My only fault with the book was around the midway mark when the murder occurs and suddenly a new character's point of view is introduced, that threw me out of the story a bit.

By day, Marianne works as a senior tech writer for a major Northwest aircraft manufacturing company, but at night, she creates romantic suspense with a humorous edge. Marianne lives in the Northwest with her husband and family, continues to believe in happy endings and intends to keep writing them as long as she has breath in her body, and her fingers don't cramp up. Stop! If you don't like cops, don't understand cops, or don't ever fantisize about cops... move on because this is not the book for you.

If you don't mind the two main characters lying to one another (or "keeping secrets") for approximately half the book, you might truly enjoy Killer Charms like I did.

Logan Sinclair is utterly sweet. I want to describe him and the plot for you but am unconfident in my ability to do so without spoiling way too much.
Andie Darling is his perfect match. They are equal in wit, bastardness vs. bitchiness, and in the protectiveness in which they guard their heart. Also, both have higher moral compasses than they let on in the begining. Don't let their first impressions fool you. Andie is a beautiful bombshell detective who really wants to prove that she is as capable a cop as her brothers, father, and grandfather. Possibly better? And despite her outrageously good looks, I found myself unable to resent her in the least.

Five stars in a review from me is rare and yet I would consider 10/10 if that was possible.
Of the 3 Darling books I think I liked Killer Charms the best. But maybe it is because I had altered my expectations of a Stillings book. It would be very hard for her to top Damsel in This Dress or Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evie. (I do miss those catchy and original titles) Logan and Andie took awhile for me to warm up to. But once the story took off, they were great. The paranormal sub-story seemed a bit out of place at times, and near the end I wondered how it would actually tie in with the main story. The suspense was great and the villain was a baddie. I was caught off guard by the surprise twist, which I liked. I really like that she brought the characters from the other 2 Darling books back and made them a real part of this book.

My main disappointment: Stillings' humor has gotten less with each successive book. Killer Charms had very little to speak of. Considering her 1st several books were filled with laugh out loud moments and scenes, I really miss that in her later books. Her 1st several books were original and had her unique talented voice. Killer Charms was more of a traditional, if you will, romantic suspense.

I'm still a fan.

Instant Magick is the catchy title used in this book to make you pay attention to it. But once you pick it up, you will quickly realize that this book is even more than just gimmicky phrase. This book is the real deal. Whether you are a beginner or versed on magick, this is a book that you should have in your esoteric library.

Right from the introduction, Penczak reveals what he means by Instant Magick. Instant doesn't mean easy or quick, and Magick is not the kind of "stuff" you watch in a movie. Instant Magick is the weaving of "the natural energies of life through your will, words, and visions into a transformation."

This book is only 216 pages long, but it has plenty of information, and exercises in every chapter. The first chapter answers the obvious question, What Is Instant Magick? and the next chapter explains what are the components that makes up a spell. Here Panczak talks about alter consciousness, focusing will, directing energy, thoughtforms and magick rituals.

I found chapter three to be very interesting. In this chapter, he explains a few of the paradigms underlying several magick traditions. He covers concepts such as The Five Elements, The World Three, The Web of Life, The Seven Chakras, The Planetary Correspondences, and briefly mentions the Tree of Life, which combines some of the former paradigms.

Then there is chapter four, which in a way is the heart of this book. In this chapter, Penczak presents a small grimmore of instant spells. These cover from the mundane such as Parking Space - a spell to find an open parking space, to the sublime such as Spirit Gate - a spell to open a temporary gateway between worlds. But this is not all, because chapter five explains the art an science behind spellcrafting.

Chapter six and seven covers more advanced concept such as meditation magick, inner circle casting, meditative rituals, empowering objects, location spells, and healing. The final chapter covers the role of magick as it becomes part of your life.

The appendix of this book makes a wealth of information very accessible. The correspondences charts cover information such as elements, planets, colors, elementals, angels, deities, and other spirits.

There is definitely something for everyone in this book. For the beginner, this is a good starting point that may shine a light on the path that is better suited for him or her. And for the more experienced, this is a good quick reference book.

In Instant Magick, Christopher Penczak gets to the bare bones of magical practice. He gives you techniques that don't require fancy tools or regalia. His writing is clear and friendly and gets to the point quickly. He gives you the three basic ingredients of magic - altering consciousness, focusing will, and directing energy and exercises to develop the skills needed for each step.

Basically, the word "instant" in the title is a bit of a misnomer. It is referring to the fact that the only tool that you need to perform magic is your mind. You will still have to put out the mental energy to do it, and the author gives you a solid foundation to start from.

It has a heavy Wiccan (i.e. continual mention of the Rede) and new age flavor. However, Mr. Penczak presents five different paradigms from which to practice magic. In this way, he encourages the reader to make their own way steering clear of dogma if they so choose. He includes visualizations to introduce you to each paradigm and relate to its energy.

The advanced practitioner may find very little of use here. This is definitely a practical magic book for the beginner. He encourages starting out small and building confidence in magical ability and gives the reader the tools to do that. There are appendices with short lists of correspondences, which are not comprehensive, but they do provide a starting point for your spells.

He clearly states that this system is not meant to replace more elaborate techniques. The focus is to teach the aspiring magician the energy behind spellcraft. He also demonstrates that you don't have to break the bank buying spell ingredients to do successful magic.

This is my first book written by Penczak, and I liked it so much that I went ahead and bought two more of his books by the time I had read up to the third chapter.

Anyone who reads books about magick knows that the market is flooded with authors that are all fluff and no substance. And then of course, there are those on the other extreme that write about magick in a manner that is utterly dry, condescending, and devoid of everything that makes magick worth learning in the first place.

Similar in style to Scott Cunningham, Penczak is one of those rare authors in the field that can take a potentially complicated subject and present it to the reader in a delightfully simple and practical manner, while clearly speaking from a wide breadth of knowledge and experience. He maintains a fast and friendly pace throughout each chapter that not only explains the concepts of Instant Magick but inspires you to START USING THEM INSTANTLY!

More than once I found myself torn between putting down the book to try out the next sample spell or meditation, or reading on to the next chapter.

Although more experienced practitioners are sure to find a lot of familiar material here, I doubt they'll find such a wide variety of it, contained in such an easily digestible package.

For newcomers, especially Wiccans, this book is simply a "must have." I certainly wish I it had been around when I started out!

So why only 4 stars? Well, I want to make clear that in my opinion, Penczak is a 5 Star Author. I just felt that he missed the mark slightly with this title.

Here's Why:

First and foremost, a fair amount of the book is actually a collection of meditations and breathing exercises that are probably best (or most easily) performed at home or at least with some level of privacy. In this sense, the title is perhaps a little misleading.

I wanted to see more examples of how Penczak himself performs Instant Magick in "real world" situations - while stuck on a crowded subway car or standing in shopping lines, etc. While he certainly provides the tools and the encouragement to do so yourself, I would have liked to hear more from his own day-to-day experiences in which spells are cast "instantly" while dealing with the hustle and bustle of the external world.

Which leads me to my next minor criticism, while he encourages the reader to find their own personal and spontaneous style of practice, the contents of the book are predominantly restricted to innovations on Wiccan traditions. This is of course great for Wiccans, but I would have liked to see a little more variety and creativity in his examples. I think some mention of Chaos Magick or perhaps a little advice on how one could employ popular culture as part of their spellwork (if the reader is so inclined) would have been appropriate here. For a book that is meant to present a new, adaptive approach to magick, it lacked some of the modern creativity I had hoped for.

Lastly, there was, in my opinion, an over-abundance of traditional magickal correspondence lists (astrological, herbal, stones, Deities, etc) throughout the book followed by a whole section of Correspondence Charts in the Appendix. Although he includes these lists with the intention of giving the reader a variety of options to pick and choose from, in my opinion, these lists may potentially divert the reader from far more vast resources - their own imagination and creativity.

For most experienced practitioners, these lists are already well-known territory. For beginners, they are probably better learned elsewhere, more throughly, and prior to employing them with the techniques of "Instant Magick."

I personally felt these last pages would have been much better spent discussing in more detail the potential of using one's imagination to forge new paths in the realm of magickal practice rather than picking and choosing from already well-traveled routes.

If I sound excessively critical, it's only because this book is in fact so well written, that for me, the few imperfections it has were all the more noticeable.

But all criticism aside, this book is just too good to pass up. Don't miss it!
This is a pretty decent book. Very creative with the ways he pulls together several systems. It goes get a little spread out though as it does seem like he just adds some filler. Overall it is good to see someone taking the powers of imagination seriously as he does here. Worth a read or two.
This book is very well written, and instant is correct. It teaches you a different view of magick. It gave me a different way of looking at magick
in a good way of course. The meditation practices were very helpful, and teaches you a better way to focus.
I highly recommend this book.
