(Advocating pouring acid on gay men)

If you like homophobic murder music, you'll love this! Banton advocates killing gays and lesbians in a number of songs, and is wanted for questioning in the attack of six gay men.
His song Boom Bye Bye talks about shooting gay men with Uzis as well as pouring acid on their heads. "Burn him up badly, like you would burn an old tyre wheel"

All the tracks on Douglas' CD play greatly on their own. Taken as a whole album, however, a slight note of monotony might creep in after track 7 or 8 -- many of the tracks share a similar mood and pace, and one might find oneself wishing for a bit of variety after an extended listening. However, that doesn't change the excellence of the performances and composition.
This album is one of the finest fruits of a move in the 1990s among avantgardists like John Zorn towards an eclectic but accessible chamber-jazz. (Other instances would be Zorn's Bar Kokhba&Bill Frisell's _Quartet_ album.) Douglas has rightly moved from obscurity to the first rank of jazz musicians in the 1990s, gaining widespread exposure from Zorn's Masada,&waxing a seeming flood of discs with a variety of bands--an acoustic, string-based quintet; the trumpet/guitar/drums ensemble the Tiny Bell Trio; the larger, more conventional jazz ensemble that recorded tributes to Booker Little, Mary Lou Williams&Wayne Shorter;&many other projects. _Charms of the Night Sky_ announced a new project, which is centred on the duo of Douglas&the remarkable accordionist Guy Klucevsek, who is one of the few North American players who can stand with Europeans like Richard Gilliano or the bandoneon master Dino Saluzzi. Half of this CD is duets of these two players; on other tracks they are joined by the ubiquitous, omnicompetent violinist Mark Feldman (whose c.v. includes everything from country fiddling to work with orchestras)&Greg Cohen (who splits his time between old-fashioned jazz with players like Marty Grosz&Woody Allen,&playing with Masada).

This is a strikingly lovely disc,&even skeptics about accordion are urged to give it a try. Douglas is as always very careful&specific about the inspirations for his music: this disc has a dedication to Charlie Haden,"Dance in Thy Soul"(which is, unexpectedly, a violin feature--after a free-tempo introduction, this settles into perhaps the most exciting&insistently rhythmic piece on the disc, which ends with a simultaneous trumpet/violin improvisation which dissolves into delicate high-pitched tones). There are two covers, Francesco Cilea's"Poveri Fiori"&Herbie Hancock's"Little One"--not simply a great cover (which it is) but an indication of a key source for the kind of subtle&impressionistic jazz on this disc.

This is an album at once innovative&immediately listenable. Highly recommended. I should add that those who enjoy it should check out Tomasz Stanko's _From the Green Hill_, a disc which employs a similar lineup (trumpet, violin, bandoneon&bass, though it's augmented by drums&saxophone); the Polish trumpeter Stanko can often sound like a wilder, more unfettered Dave Douglas.
I originally chose this CD as my intro to Dave Douglas' solo work because the Winter&Winter packaging is so cool. . . . I overlooked the fact that he would be playing with just bass, violin, and accordion (yes, accordion) and went with CHARMS OF THE NIGHT SKY. Man, what a good call! This CD is all that it possibly could be, and Douglas makes it even more. Great arranging turns some very intriguing melodies into very intriguing and beautiful songs. As I have since discovered, this is pretty mellow stuff for Douglas, but he brings a passion and energy to this seemingly laid-back disc that few, if any, others could do. Tracks 2&3,"Bal Masque"and"Sea Change,"would probably be my two favorites (I love him jumping the octave in"Sea Change"), but I don't skip over anything. I have seen Douglas play in concert with John Zorn's Masada, and he is just physically and sonically impressive in that setting. What is really cool is that he is equally impressive in a bit more subdued setting such as this. Cohen, Feldman, and Klucevsek should not be overlooked, either, as their support is integral throughout the CD. A beautifully constructed collection, this is worthy to be on the shelf of really special discs that one goes to for a breath of fresh air, a moment just to clear one's head, and/or a deep breath at the end of a busy day. Douglas will reward you, and you'll come away quiet, refreshed, and invigorated. At least I do. . . .
If you think acordeon is not your kind of instrument in jazz listen to this CD and I'm sure you will change your mind. My wife hates it, but if you spare a bit time to listen to this a couple of times you will know what I mean. Track nr.2 Bal Masqué and track nr. 4 is excellent music for Kusturica's next film...
This is maybe my favorite Dave Douglas recording (could change next week since they are all so good). As the title seems to suggest, I tend to play this one at night after my toddler has gone to bed. It is both stimulating and relaxing. Most of the songs have a slow to medium tempo and are performed in a somewhat relaxed manner. The instrumental combination and their arrangements are wonderful. Somehow, this music allows me to re-engage my mind while calming my body.

As much as I love this, my wife hates it. If accordian and trumpet isn't your thing, perhaps you better stay away. But if your seeking a subtle yet rich tonal experience, this it it!
Trumpeter Dave Douglas works at a tireless pace, releasing a steady stream of excellent solo albums, contributing to John Zorn's Masada, and appearing as a featured soloist on scores of diverse projects. OnCharms of the Night Sky, Douglas steps back for an album of restful meditations on the waltzes, polkas, klezmer, and café music of Europe. Playing without a drummer, Douglas leans his breathy horn against the solid foundation of bassist Greg Cohen and trades austere lines with Mark Feldman's violin while the accordion (!) of Guy Klucevsek sets the mood. These beautiful songs, duets, and tone poems are elegantly paced and played with an understated authority that is wistful, romantic, and full of grace. It wan't what I thought it was going to be. ut it is a cute book
If you are looking for an (art-)historical study on Milagros, go for the excellent little book by Martha Egan (also available at Amazon.com). The short (6 pages) introduction on the history of Milagros in this book is based on the book by Martha Egan.

This colourful, nicely presented book focuses on the role that (making) milagros could play in your own life (I find it a bit 'New Agey', but not too much). There are five chapters in this book, each divided into three parts (body, mind, spirit). Every chapter covers a part of our body:

1. the head ('knowing is wisdom'),
2. the heart ('how we love'),
3. the hand ('your hands connect you to others'),
4. the foot ('your feet support your journey through life'),
5. the mouth ('our words are as good as our deeds').

About half of its 95 pages are filled with full page Mexican style artwork. Small photographs of traditional Milagros are scattered throughout the text.

In each chapter the author gives her view on the symbolical meaning a Milagro depicting this specific body part could have: its meaning for our body, for our mind, and for our spirit. She illustrates this with anecdotes from Mexican daily life: the 'mouth' chapter tells how a mother's offering mouth milagros to the Virgin Mary led to a cure of her son's deformed jaw (Yes! It is - after all- a book on miracles).

The book ends with a chapter on how to make your own milagros. Another reviewer already expressed his (or was it her?) anger at the simplicity of the author's suggestions: cutting out a picture from a magazine and laminating it. If you really would like to make your own milagros, you will get enough ideas from the rest of the book. I believe this chapter was added just for those of us who are convinced (rightly so or not), that they have no creative talents whatsoever. So that even those among us who can barely hold a pair of scissors, can make their own little miracle workers.

To sum it all up: there is not very much substance here. But it IS a cheerful, well-meaning little book on how to find hope and comfort in small things, and how to introduce some (home made) miracles into your life. I liked it. It will make a lovely gift for someone who could use some cheering-up, whether this will be a friend, or yourself.

This is a cute little picture book with a very superficial discussion of the actual objects. It has very little useful information, lots of hippie crap about love and symbols. Where do milagros come from? who makes them? what are their histories? how did they become symbols of whatever they are symbols of? what is their significance in Mexico? these are questions this book does not address. Also, the claim that there are instructions for making your own milagros is misleading. All the book tells you to do is get a picture from a magazine or maybe cut a shape out of paper and laminate it. I gave it three stars because if you only want a cute little book with a lot of pictures this one would do.
I have been interested in Mexican Folk Art for quite some time and often admired Milagros. They are such beautiful little pieces of art that look as though they are crafted with such care. I have been hesitant to start purchasing or collecting these due to a lack of knowledge on their history and meaning.

Enter this great little book by Helen Thompson entitled"Milagros: A Book of Miracles."What a great resource this is for someone like me who has a genuine interest in these little miracles and is searching for their meaning. In it you get a brief history of Milagros and their continued use. Then you are shown the Milagros that relate to the human body, mind and spirit. This is where we are given some amazing stories that drive home the powerfulness of the Milagros!

This book of miracles ends with a bit on making your own Milagros. As an avid crafter, I found this to be an incredibly interesting section of the book. With just a bit of imagination, you can make some beautiful Milagros of your own.

This was a great introduction for me and now I'm off to further my Milagro education.
If you want a little book to place on a table in your guest room, buy this one. But if you want to really learn something about the subject of milagros as votive offerings, buy the book"Milagros: Votive Offerings from the Americas"by Martha Egan. It is very informative with excellent illustrations. It will make you want to be a collector.

I bought this for my great-niece and my sister (her gramma) said it was so wonderful to see how my great-niece and her sister really believed in the magic of the locket. The other niece wants a copy of her own for her next birthday. I'm so happy the gift was such a huge hit!
I used to love this book when i was younger. I also liked the others in the series. I would never get sick of them and they have always stayed as one of my favorites.
The Magic Locket is about a little girl who could never do anything right. She tried so hard for things to go the right way, but it seemed that everything she did went wrong. Until one day when her Aunt Emma gave her a golden shiny locket and had told the little girl that it was magical! So every since the little girl wore the locket things went right! That's because she believed in herself when she was wearing the locket. This story is one of my favorite children's book just because it reminds me of me because whenever I try and do something it turns out to be wrong. I think this book would be good for children ages 4 and up because it teaches a lesson that everyone should live by. It teaches you that if you want some things you have to believe in yourself first before you do anything.
Elizabeth Koda-Callan is a wounderful writer. She puts lots of love in this book and is a Fantastic writer.THis book is a bout a little girl who can't do anything write and gets very descouraged. For exsample she can't brush her teeth,get dressed,do math, feed her doll's or help with groceries. But when her Anunt Emma comes gives her a locket and tells her some encourageing words and you have to read what happends.
...This book is so cute and touching, and not only is it a book, it comes with a locket, so it's like two prizes in one. I highly recommend this for people (especially women) of all ages.

The company shipped the book very quickly and I received it in better condition than I was expecting. The book came shrink wrapped and in perfect condition, even though the description noted that there might be some normal wear and tear to it. I ordered the book as a gift and I ordered it a little later than I should have but I still received the book before I needed it, so I was still able to give the gift on time. Also, the prices were VERY reasonable.
In Good Wives, Meg is married to a poor man. she is just trying to get used to married life, especially since she has children later. Amy has grown to be quite like her older sister(Meg), and is off in Europe. since Beth had scarlett fever she seems to become weaker, and in a daze every day. Laurie becomes too fond of Jo, so she goes to New York. Both Jo, and Amy get married later, and have children. the book was written wonderfully, and descriptively. It took on a better understanding of what both, life, and marriage should be based on all different perspectives. It touched my heart deeply. It's a great book, but you should read the first part of Little Women first
Just to be clear, Little Women was originally published in two parts: Little Women, and Good Wives. They've since been sold mostly in one volume. If you remember the death of Beth, Jo's experiences in New York, and Meg as a married woman, you have already read this. I enjoyed reading them as separate volumes (it allows me to pretend that Beth lives and Jo ends up with Laurie), but this isn't how this book is usually sold. But, contrary to what some another review has said, this isn't some gimmicky attempt by publishers to rip off readers, this is how the book was originally sold.

Both halves of this story are lovely, definitely worth reading.
The book jacket says "continue their story" but this book is just the second part of the original "Little Women" book excerpted out. It adds nothing new. It ends at exactly the same place in the story. The chapters titles are the same as "Little Women." I bought it because I thought it was a sequel. I feel completely ripped off. I don't understand how the previous reviewers missed this essential point!!!!
Louisa May Alcott captured the spirit of a loving family in "Little Women," the ultimate coming-of-age story. In "Good Wives," the second half of the "Little Women" story (and the second part of an ongoing family saga), Alcott takes her little women out of teenage hijinks and into a darker, more adult place.

The book opens with Meg March's wedding to John Brooke -- he's not the wealthy man of her dreams, but he is the man she loves. As Meg learns that it's a struggle to be a poor man's wife, her sisters Jo and Amy are stretching their own wings -- Amy is becoming an accomplished young artist, and Jo is letting "genius burn" as a published writer. Beth, who has never recovered from her bout of scarlet fever, is still a fragile homebody.

Things take an unexpected turn when Aunt March invites Amy to go to Europe with her -- a trip Jo has wanted for years. To make things worse, Beth is in love with Laurie... but then Laurie proposes to Jo. When she rejects him, he storms away to Europe. Jo leaves as well, to be a governess and a writer in the city, but returns home to find Beth slowly wilting away. Tragedy, love and new life will bring the family back together in unexpected ways.

It always hurts to grow up, and the events of "Good Wives" are no exception. It's a much more adult book than the first "Little Women," with the girls finding out about love, marriage, careers, artistic attempts and the loss of loved ones. There's plenty of humor -- Jo's disastrous housecalls and Amy's equally disastrous dinner party -- but it's muted.

Alcott's writing, surprisingly, doesn't change much -- it's still funny, weird and highly detailed, but also full of sweetness and pathos. And while the book has some sad endings, the overall feel is that life goes on and things always turn out, if not happily, then for the best -- there are marriages, babies, and new beginnings for everyone. And it ends with a lead-in to the sequel, "Little Men," with Jo and Professor Bhaer adopting a bunch of boys as unruly as Jo was.

Jo is the same old Jo, with her foot in her mouth and her fierce independence. But she does become more mature and less prickly. Beth is almost a nonentity, wasting away until leaving the book altogether; Meg seems rather ditzy as a housewife, but apparently is shown as a Marmee-in-training. Amy does the best of all, becoming a vivid, funny character almost as likable as Jo.

The second part of "Little Women" is "Good Wives" -- a very different kind of story about the March girls. But if anything, it's a more beautiful and sweeter one.
[Meg] made her wedding gown herself, sewing into it the tender hopes and innocent romances of a girlish heart. Her sisters braided up her pretty hair, and the only ornaments she wore were the lilies of the valley, which "her John" liked best of all ...
