Don't expect the John McCormack aged 25 in 1910 to have the interpretative skills evident in his later years, but the voice was already compelling in its unique nasal tenor quality, and recording processes of the time captured it well.
The songs themselves are less distinguished. They met the demand for ditties that recalled a long lost homeland for a large population of USA immigrants. McCormack made a fortune by meeting this need, so that performing and recording them enabled him to give up the career in opera that he disliked.
These Naxos transfers and remasterings make these very old recordings sound better than in any other incarnation I have ever heard while magically eliminating most of the surface hiss that formerly was so intrusive.』

Podles and Ohlsson give us sublime readings of Chopin's complete Op. 74 (plus the exceptional addition of two more songs that the composer "tossed off" in autograph books of friends--- and were published as late as 1910!) in a critical release of music whose beautiful performances will make it accessible to even those who would prefer root canal surgery rather than listen to vocal repertoire. But once heard, the spell is cast.
The pairing of contralto Ewa Podles and pianist Ohlsson is an artistic match that, besides being made in heaven, takes the breath away. What a voice is hers! Such poignant depth, such dark, rich, full-throated hues, such utter command of the myriad colorings of Chopin's inspirations! And, with Ohlsson's thoroughly sensitive accompaniment, Podles is unfettered in her ability to convey the composer's most melancholic despair ("Faded and Vanished")--- with a voice so filled with anguish it could make a stone weep!--- his lyrical sweetness and naivete ("The Maiden's Wish"), his affecting nostalgia ("The Sad River"), charming exhuberance ("A Drinking Song"), wistfulness ("Spring"), love ("My Darling").
The inclusion of the delightful, and even less frequently heard, Variations for Flute and Piano in E gives the CD cheerful closure (much needed after the riveting outpouring of Chopin angst). Elizabeth Mann plays a fine, mellow flute and, again, Mr. Ohlsson is the most giving and unselfish of accompanists.
The Arabesque sound throughout is intimate and cocooning; song texts are in both Polish and English; and the liner notes by Frank Cooper are excellent.

(Chopin's Songs sung by Ewa Podles) 『It doesn't matter what voice range Chopin originally scored his 19 songs for. They have been performed by mezzo-sopranos, sopranos, and sometimes with no singer at all, just a lone piano. It was a stroke of genius for Arabesque to have enlisted contralto Ewa Podles to sing them. Good contraltos occur rarely on new releases these days, even more rarely than their male equivalent, the countertenor. Not since Kathleen Ferrier have I heard a contralto mine such quarries of feeling. Her rendition of "Nie Ma Czego grzeba" ("Faded and Vanished") is so melancholic, so early Romantic, that it could have been penned by Franz Schubert. The melismas at the end of each stanza extracted tears from me, a feat that hasn't occurred in recent memory. Her rendition of "Out of My Sight" dramatically conveys the conflicting emotions of one lover parting from another. Elly Ameling and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau sing Schubert lieder with similar finesse, pacing, and eloquence. Scholars disagree, but Chopin appears to have written most of these songs in two periods, 1829-1831 and 1847. The early ones were old-fashioned even for their time. Because of their strophic style and naïve folk elements, they belong more to the pre-lied era of the late 18th century. Only in songs like "Melodia" (1847) does Chopin approach the emotional depth of the emerging art song. The piano works he composed at the same time blazed more brightly, popularizing such obscure forms like the nocturne. That said, I believe it is a pity Chopin didn't write more of these excellent songs. They transcend the limited forms in which he fit them. They are morose ("The Two-Fold End", raucous ("Drinking Song"), martial ("The Warrior"), even slightly earthy ("Lithuanian Song"). Pianist Garrick Ohlsson,who has performed in the previous 11 volumes of this series, proves an excellent accompanist. His technique is sensitive, well paced, and flamboyant only when required, never showy. Like pianist Gerald Moore, he never draws attention from the vocal pyrotechnics of his singer. The final piece, "Variations in E Major for Flute and Piano" (for"Non piu mesta"from Rossini's La Cenerentola) is a charming trifle composed when Chopin was fourteen. Although a bit anti-climactic after these marvelous songs, the piece shows that Chopin, while not a child prodigy like Mozart or Mendelssohn, was clearly on the way to greatness. I wanted to know the inner workings of a withces coven and what it involves and what makes it click. This book satisfied my curiosity. I never realized how much work that is required in being in a coven until I read this book. The book describes some of the problems that arise in a witches coven like disagreements regarding spells/magick and she gives good points on how to solve them. Also she touches on how certain individuals in a coven who always have a issues/crisis/problems going on in their lives and are always draining the coven energy level with their constant problems which could hinder the covens magickal working. She gives examples of dealing with these kinds of issues. Coven practice and coven group excercises are also given in the book so that eventually the coven can sense and raise energy for future magickal workings. What I like about this author is that she stresses how magick is not easy and how it takes practice , practice and more practice for the outcome to materialize. Spells may have to be inacted over and over again. Successfull magick is hard work and she always stresses that point. This book answered a lot of questions I had. Its good for the curious seeker who wants to know about a witches coven life.』
(frankly, i expected more...) 『i was excited to get this book for after leading three covens you need some fresh ideas to keep things interesting. although the spells in this book are useful and are set up for group work, i can take any spell and convert it for group use myself. if you need help with this, then this book is a good place to start. i found that the amount of positions required to perform the rituals (needing 5 or 6 people to particpate) is a little presumptuous; who has a group with 6 people who each want a large part in a ritual? not many i assume. i realize these potitions can be omitted but i found that the rituals were severaly lacking after doing so. i liked some of the projects and exercises but like my title says, i expected more. i would give the book fewer stars but there so few books out there for covenwork, i just couldn't give it less than three for the attempt edain made.』

So it includes log cabin, courthouse steps, flying geese designs and others. What I found interesting is the play with color, size, and the subtle alteration of these classic designs that make a quilt more visually interesting. This quiltmaker's experience shows and her tips are to the point and spot on. She offers useful ideas for how to display your quilts which isn't found everywhere. However, if you want something radically "different" you may want to explore titles that refer to "art quilts" although I see a great deal of delicate artistry in this little book. Highly recommended for the nostalgic.』

(Hell Hath No Fury Like a Spirit Scorned) 『Michael Savoy runs a funeral home. It belongs to his do-nothing, loser-of-a-father Wilson. Wilson ran out on Michael and his wife and left them to manage it on their own. All hell breaks loose, literally, when a Gypsy family brings one of their own; Thalia Stevenson, to have her body prepared and funeral performed. Many mysterious customs are performed to prepare Thalia for burial, including the placing of a gold coin in her hands. The coin will be needed to pay her passage into the after-life. Wilson, who owes a great deal of money to cover his gambling debts, steals the gold coin and thus interrupts the smooth passage of Thalia's spirit. Michael and his wife have 2 days to return the coin to avoid a horrible revenge which will include the loss of their own child.
The character development in this book is stronger than most in the horror genre. Ms. LeBlanc takes the time to introduce the major players and sculpts personalities that are believable, liked and hated. The story moves at a nice steady pace. The author is able to avoid rushing head-long to the conclusion to wrap up the story in a harried, jumbled, unlikely ending. This is one of the better "horror" novels I have enjoyed in a while.』

My biggest complaint is that I would have enjoyed a deeper glimpse into the culture of the gypsy characters who are central to the first half of the book. A bit more explanation could also have been served up in regards to several of the events that unfold. In all, though, this book was an entertaining read, and I look forward to exploring more of what LeBlanc has to offer.』
