(Lori Laitman's Masterful Achievement)

The title of this disk and the image of a sleeping child on the cover might lead one to assume that this is one more "Music to Relax By" recording to add to countless others that have already been made and that threaten to overwhelm the planet. This is actually a stunning collection of widely varied songs by one of the finest art song composers on the scene today. Lori Laitman deservedly stands shoulder to shoulder with Ned Rorem for her uncommon sensitivity to text, her loving attention to the human voice and its capabilities, and her extraordinary palette of musical colors and gestures. One intriguing entry in her resume is a masters degree in flute performance (from Yale School of Music), and it would be interesting to inquire how she believes her extensive background as an instrumentalist has contributed to her growing mastery of vocal composition.
This collection is superbly executed in every respect, not only in the smallest musical details, but also in matters of presentation and organization. The disk is about as generous as current technology allows, and features a thoroughly riveting range of song cycles presented with thoughtful introductions from the composer in the liner notes. Her comments are succinct yet heartfelt and seem designed not so much for scholars as for ordinary art song listeners. The singers are able champions of Laitman's music, boasting strong and attractive voices under impressive technical control, and performing these songs most expressively. Warren Jones is pianist for most of the songs and offers his usual brilliant work.
Aside from the singers and Mr. Jones, the collection also boasts the presence of one of the world's finest string bass players, Gary Karr, a past teacher of Laitman's husband. It was for his considerable talents that Laitman composed her shattering Holocaust 1944, seven songs based on a wide array of poems either stemming directly from that human tragedy or written in reflection of it. Laitman mentions her earlier holocaust work for soprano voice and alto saxophone, which she says has a lighter and more hopeful quality. This later work is more relentlessly bleak and heart-broken, its dark texts so movingly embodied by Karr's haunting double bass and William Sharp's eloquent baritone. Karr is confronted by technical hurdles of every kind as well as the task of helping to bring these searing words to life. The longest song of the cycle (and of the entire disk) is a setting of a powerful text called "Both Your Mothers" in which the poet, Jerzy Ficowski, speaks to a youngster of the birth mother that gave him up in secret so that he could have life with a new mother in a place far away from the Nazi horror. The double bass conveys in its lower register the savage edge of sorrow, but Laitman also takes it to the uppermost reaches of its range for the moment in the poem when Ficowski speaks of the courageous birth mother, "Who could now step into crowded death happily incomplete" in the hope that her baby would survive. The double bass is also quite striking in the following song, "What Luck," which is the brightest bit of optimism in the cycle, with the poet quietly rejoicing at having escaped almost certain death and able now to enjoy tender moments of affection. Most of the cycle, however, is unsparing in its despair, and never more so than in a poem called "Massacre of the Boys." Laitman writes that it is all but impossible to read these words without weeping, and one can hardly imagine them being set any more movingly than in the stark combination of baritone and string bass. Regrettably, these remarkable songs and their equally remarkable performances are sonically the most poorly recorded pieces on the disk; Mr. Sharp seems to have been recorded from a distance and his lovely timbre has a metallic edge not evident in other recordings. These technical concerns pale in importance, however, beside such remarkable words, music, and artistry.
The remaining works on this disk are scarcely less compelling. They underscore Laitman's remarkable regard for the poetic word and her ability to set the irregular and unpredictable texts of Thomas Lux as effectively as the more standard poetry of Dickinson and Teasdale. Four of Lux's delightful and off-beat poems make up Men With Small Heads and are winningly sung by Randall Scarlata with the composer herself at the piano; the rhapsodically absurd "Refrigerator 1957" is a special tour de force for all concerned. There are two sets of more serious and sedate songs featuring the poetry of Emily Dickinson, gorgeously sung by soprano Jennifer Check, who keeps her evidently large voice under impressive control. She admirably contends with Laitman's occasional tendency to send the singer on sudden and somewhat jarring melodic ascents. Sari Gruber offers impressive singing of her own in the cycle Sunflowers, which features some of the most complex music in this collection. The most accessible set is called The Years which Laitman composed in honor of her in-law's fiftieth wedding anniversary. She adapts a simpler and more unabashedly romantic approach for these somewhat sentimental texts, and mezzo-soprano Patricia Green responds to them with an honest expressiveness that is entirely persuasive.
The disk ends with its title track, but this is certainly no song of slumber! "Dreaming" is a hilarious recital encore with a text by the composer in which two singers exchange thoughts on the thing they most dream about receiving, "a great review." The rollicking energy of this music shows us yet another side of Lori Laitman's remarkable gifts as a composer, making the dreamed about great review rather prophetic and leaving us hungry for more from this exceptionally gifted genius. I listen to all types of music, including a lot of classical, but I've never spent much time in the art song/lieder genre. Recently a friend gave me"Dreaming - The Songs of Lori Laitman", and all I can say is Wow. What an amazing achievement. The songs are outstanding, the lyrics profound and heartfelt, the melodies rich with power and passion, and the performances absolutely first rate. If you like your music beautiful and have a preference for excellence, do yourself a favor and pick up this disc today. You'll be glad you did.
I fell in love with Lori Laitman's luminous art songs last year when I discovered this composer's debut album, Mystery. I was struck by the freshness of Ms. Laitman's harmonies, the beauty and accessibility of her vocal lines, and her talent for illuminating the unique voice of each poet she sets. My admiration has grown exponentially as I've listened to her second CD, Dreaming-Songs of Lori Laitman. The new disc features two of her signature Emily Dickinson cycles, sung to perfection by soprano Jennifer Check, as well as four darkly hilarious Thomas Lux songs, performed with daffy brio by baritone Randall Scarlata. Mezzo Patricia Green brings the Sara Teasdale cycle, "The Years," to life, while soprano Sari Gruber gives sparkling clarity to "Sunflowers," three Mary Oliver songs that rank among Ms. Laitman's finest. One of my favorite singers, the always-intelligent William Sharp, movingly portrays the pain and loss of "Holocaust 1944," a stirring addition to Ms. Laitman's Holocaust canon featuring texts of authors who were victims of Nazi persecution. Gary Karr expertly accompanies the latter cycle with his virtuosic doublebass, whereas 22 other songs feature sensitive piano work by the incomparable Warren Jones and Ms. Laitman. I don't think it's hyperbole to say that Dreaming is a masterful achievement by a composer writing at the apex of her powers. For me, the recording offers 79 minutes of sheer aural bliss.

It's a shame they aren't around anymore. Great sound and very to the point. They sort of drill into your brain and settle in for a stay.
I was first introduced to this cd several years ago by my little brother who has excellent taste in music so I decided to listen to find out what Reality Check was all about. I was impressed by them and quickly became a fan. This cd is a must have if you are interested in a different type of sound. My favorite song on the disk is of course Plastic because it simply couldn't be more true. Buy it, you'll live it.
I saw these guys in concert back in 1997 and I fell in love with this CD! They absolutely lit up the stage and their CD is very unqiue. They broke up unfortunately, but this CD plays on. I have had it for 7 years now, and still love it.
Reality Check is best described as a gold nugget. Rare, valuable, and usually found in areas mostly compiled of dirt. While often compared to DC Talk, Reality Check is best compared to the earlier styles of 311 to the point where when I first heard them I thought it was the Christian music industry trying to capitolize on 311's fame. I was quickly proven wrong.
While Reality Check has the typical rap-rock sound you might expect, the more you listen to this album the more you realize how diverse this album is. From catchy hooks to deep lyrics that make you think, this album is a work of art from beginning to end. And those who currently own this album will attest that it stands the test of time. 2003 and still a great album. The only bad thing Reality Check has ever put out is the press release that they were breaking up.
This is an excellent disc! Easily one of my favorites. I stumbled upon it by accident when hearing a few of these songs on a mixed disc. One terrific"mellow"song (Know You Better) and the rest simply rock! Get it!

This was surprisingly entertaining and with a few minor exceptions, very inoffensive family fare. It's another one of those adults-and-kids-can-both-enjoy flicks with a number of lines that border on being too much for kids but are still tame for adults - close, but safe. There are also some funny special effects and some good slapstick humor.

Being basically a kids' film, the main child, played by Eric Lloyd is cute but a little too spoiled for me but he's tolerable, as is his brother. Jason Alexander is the father, a very likable subdued guy but a little too lenient.

The real surprise in this cast is Faye Dunaway. Usually playing hard-edged types, she is the opposite in here which is kind of refreshing to see. She shows a nice comedic touch. The chimpanzee is probably the most entertaining, which is the idea, but so is the villain played by Rupert Evert. In other words, there are a lot of likable characters in this movie.

This a "sleeper:" an underrated film that a lot of people would enjoy. I'm sorry it never got much "press."

Very Fun Movie, Cute boys and an orangutan have a special bond.
Full of laughs and a sweet bond with their father.
My 10 yr old son has this movie&absolutely loved it, so I purchased it for my friend's children for Christmas. They loved it too! My friend was glad to get a movie the whole family could enjoy.
I was suprised that I actually liked this. Ape Dunston! It is warm, fun, and slightly zany, and seems not to take itself too seriously which is a good thing to me.

Oh, and "Lord Rutledge" that is a great freakin' name!
High society gets a dose of monkey business in this family-friendly bit of simian slapstick. Less foul and more fun than Clyde from the Clint Eastwood comedies, Dunston is the practical-joking orangutan partner of foppish jewel thief Rupert Everett. Making his escape in a five-star New York hotel, Dunston lands in the protective care of 10-year-old Eric Lloyd, the high-spirited son of harried hotel manager Jason Alexander, and together they turn the snooty social event of the year into a zoo. Faye Dunaway is Alexander's overbearing boss just aching for a comic comeuppance, and Paul "Pee-wee Herman" Reubens dons a mauve tuxedo as Buck La Farge, animal-control specialist. Would you believe the monkey upstages them all? Though hardly the smartest comedy around, this is a cute, cuddly little barrel full of monkeyshines just made for the younger crowd. I use Quickbooks Pro which integrates nicely into the"MyBusinessCheckWriter"software program. I thought I would save money by printing my own checks, but did not realize the following: I had to purchase a special MICR toner for my printer so the scanners could read the checks; even with this there was still problems scanning and when you try to use them at a cashier expect to have problems. When I receive my bank statements, the check numbers aren't accurate because the scanners often will show a check with a five digit number to be a check with a 2 or 3 digit number. I tried to find window envelopes to match the checks, only to discover the address windows will not line up with any standard window envelopes and you can only purchase the right ones through guess where? When you add up the totals, you're money ahead ordering your checks pre-printed.
The price on this product is attractive, but it will NOT work with Quicken unless you purchase additional software (from MyChecks, of course) to allow printing to odd size checks.

Basically, you print the check and payee information in one step by selecting a special"printer"that merges the data and sends it to your printer. This is complex and adds an unnecessary step to the process if you like to print blank checks then fill them out. You have to load your MICR toner EVERY time you print checks. (You really do want to use MICR toner. Trust me.)

If you are particularly security conscious, printing a check in one step means you don't have blank checks lying around. That's a good thing. But it's not for me, nor, I suspect for most people.

I have been using MyChecks for two years now with Quicken and MyCheckWriter software. Had a little difficulty setting up the check structure, but once done everything works smoothly. You need to make sure that you have ALL software required to make these checks work properly.
These are advertised as compatible with Quicken and Quickbooks but if they are, I certainly can't make them work. The perfs are in a different location than Intuit's software can deal with. The printing will stagger off on the business 3 ups and also the business with stub.

Reality Check has been the best business devotional for me this year for three reasons:

First, Verla Gilmor communicates complex concepts with clarity, brevity, and wit. Some books in this genre bore me--this one stimulates.

Second, Reality Check offers one dose of wisdom per week. The easy structure of Reality Check is not obvious, but the 52 fast reading chapters--most are 3-4 pages--make it possible to start anywhere in Reality Check at anytime.

Third, Reality Check's illustrations are razor-sharp and the life-application questions create quick direction checks. They work! These questions can actually enrich the way a person lives out their days in the marketplace.

Some of my favorite Gilmor illustrations come from her days as a reporter and broadcaster in Chicago, including her first "breaking" story as a young reporter on the sinking of a pleasure boat in a sudden storm on Lake Michigan, her home office being "robbed" while she was sleeping, and dealing with deception at City Hall. Her ability to select perfect illustrations shows in telling the stories of the famous tenor Leo Slezak, the first time tourists in the kingdom of Bhutan in the Eastern Himalaya's, and Governor Jim Edgar's anecdote that "There are all kinds of things about Lincoln I don't want to duplicate. Lincoln got shot,"

For quick perspective and life-wisdom, Reality Check makes a solid contribution.
An excellent resource for those who are willing to share their faith in the workplace. Verla shares pratical simple ideas. She inspires and gives you a kickstart from being complacent
to a place of courageousness. Advice is given through short chapters which give you insight into her quick wit. She makes you think, chew things over and leaves you with questions at
the end of each chapter. The thing is - she makes you rethink your relationship with God, to stop standing in the background and compromising, then challenges you to take a stand on biblical principles. Take this book to work, leave it on the side of your desk and wait for questions on what the book is all about.
The chapters are short enough to read through lunch and have discussions with co-workers. What a challenge it would be to change the thinking of those around you!

This book addressed one of the primary issues for me, as a newly diagnosed cancer survivor - how to keep up with my job while still taking the time needed for medical treatments and recuperation. The book focuses on ten fairly high-powered women with executive and professional jobs, but the preface notes that nowadays most mid-life women are working outside the home and have to balance work responsibilities with their personal needs. Many of us are single and self-supporting; employer-provided health insurance is essential to cover the considerable costs of treatment. So this book helped to answer my overwhelming need to know how to communicate with people at work and how to balance my work schedule with the time I needed to deal with the cancer.

Some of the technical information in the book is a little outdated, since the experience of some of the women went back into the 1980s and the book itself came out in 1997. However, I found the book enormously useful in addressing the work-related issues that often are given little attention in other cancer books I've read.
This is a concept book, as you might guess from the title. I didn't much care for the concept.Ten busy professional women, all initially diagnosed with Stage I or II breast cancer, were invited by McCarthy Medical Marketing and Innovative Medical Education Consortium, Inc. to form a focus group that would help to foreground the needs of their special category - busy professional women with breast cancer - for the edification of medical personnel and other cancer care providers. The resulting book, put together in-house by MMM and IMEC,"is intended to provide health-care professionals with insight into what makes this group of women 'different' and, in turn, to enhance their relationships with them."And how are these women"different?"The book explains,"For all ten authors, the diagnosis of breast cancer was a major inconvenience because...it interrupted their busy, active, and fulfilled lives."It turns out none of them felt comfortable crying in doctor's offices or losing control. Nor enjoyed the disagreeable task of"comforting distraught well-wishers"such as their friends and extended family. Nor - back to the title - easily found time for treatment and other medical visits. Why, one woman had the unimaginable experience of being put on hold 15 minutes for her lab results! Whew, what a relief that the rest of us don't have any of that to worry about. As the book progresses and this offensive start-off impression recedes into the background, the characters become more sympathetic and their medical and professional fates interesting. So I'm inclined to hope that these 10 authors didn't quite anticipate how the final draft would make them look. Every woman who has breast cancer has a right to our sympathy and concern. That goes for busy professionals too. Will appeal to: Obsessive fact-gatherers trying to assess their options and eager to learn what happened to other people with a similar lifestyle.

Great book, worth the money. Very well written, professional and comprehensive. I recommend it to all beginners as well as to experienced pilots to refresh their knowledge.

Hands down the best reference I've seen for practical IFR.

It covers pretty much everything you'd ever need to know. What to do and how to do it, from the theory of it all the way to the practical 'in the cockpit' methods that make all of the complex mental gymnastics simple.

If you want to develop a solid foundation for your IFR ticket, and a have a go to resource after you've obtained it, this is the book to use.

As noted elsewhere, if you're just trying to pass the written, grab a Gleim. But for everything you REALLY need to know to put all of that to use, get this book.

It made a world of difference for me on the way to my Commercial rating.
This is worth reading if you want to learn how to fly IFR but poor preparation for passing the FAA's IFR knowledge test. You'll want to supplement this textbook with the King videos and/or the Gleim book of all the questions.

Thorough review sections help hone knowledge in preparation for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Knowledge Exam, while detailed text and illustrations prepare pilots for the oral and flight tests.
