Here is yet another collection that confirms the greatness of song composer Lori Laitman. It is difficult to think of anyone before the public today who equals her exceptional gifts for embracing a poetic text and giving it new and deeper life through music. She has an unerring way of enhancing a text's beauty and meaning while not obscuring the text through artifice or excess. One also has to admire how deeply personal her songs are, and that depth of self-expression is surely one of the chief reasons why singers are drawn to her work and find her songs so gratifying to perform.
As with a previous Laitman collection reviewed in this column, this recording features very helpful liner notes written by the composer herself. Laitman gives background on the text at hand, and then manages to explain her setting of that text without getting too technical. She is especially careful to point out instances of word painting that otherwise might not be discerned. Full texts are included, which is a relief, since her singers do not always manage to articulate the texts with perfect clarity. The recording features an array of superb singers, most of whom are performing music that was composed for them and/or that they premiered. They are an accomplished group, as are the various instrumentalists who are part of this as well, and every performance seems to be of the highest standard.
Every work on this disk is worth having and hearing, but special praise must be reserved for Daughters, featuring texts of two writers touched by the Holocaust. Laitman notes that this is her first composition for vocal soloist and piano trio, and one hopes that she will return to this array of musicians again and again. It's a beautifully balanced work, and the colors of piano, violin and cello meld with Patricia Green's voice in all kinds of haunting ways. Long Pond Revisited is also exceptionally beautiful for the way it features baritone solo to the accompaniment of one cello. It's a gorgeous combination which we have heard before, but this particular piece capitalizes on the eloquence of the cello so ideally. Another especially effective song is "The Apple Orchard," which is impeccably crafted and coherent. "Equations of the Light" is a fascinating sort of duet in which two individuals have a chance encounter on the street, with their respective songs blending almost uneasily at first before eventually coming together in unison. The music then shifts again as they go their separate way s and we're left with a nagging sense of unresolved hopes. Throughout this disk, one can not help but be impressed at how well Laitman manages to set poignant texts of heartbreak and loss, and then in the very next song will write just as effectively in a more light-hearted vein.
Albany has done a great deal over the years with American music, and this release certainly rises to the high standards we have come to expect from them.』
(Reprinted from Gramophone Magazine, March 2007) 『It's inevitable that any American art-song composer will at some point be compared with Ned Rorem, as is done in this disc's booklet notes. It's a testament to the quality, melodic richness and subtlety of Lori Laitman's songs that for once the comparison is not inapt. The Albany label is clearly committed to the flautist-turned-composer, with this third disc following up two previous releases: "Mystery -- The Songs of Lori Laitman" in 2000 and "Dreaming" in 2003. I hadn't heard either but the current anthology, "Becoming a Redwood," is an extraordinarily impressive achievement.
The programme presents a variety of singers in five shortish cycles and a handful of individual settings. Early Snow offers three songs that display Laitman's gift for setting a mood with great economy and precise word-painting. "Last night the rain spoke to me" is lovely, Barber-like in its simple tonal melody. In the title-song Laitman distills the evocative scene and emotion most artfully. Jennifer Check is a sensitive advocate though her voice tends to turn shrill on top. In Daughters, Laitman's songs, setting poems by Anne Ranasinghe and Karen Gershon, are masterly, probing the requisite nostalgia and aching sense of loss. "Sheila Remembered" is particularly affecting with great depth of emotion, simply rendered. At nearly nine minutes, "A Letter to my Daughter" is the most extended song on the disc but Laitman sustains the structure masterfully, with a natural flow yet alert attention to the elliptical, shifting stanzas. Patricia Green's rich mezzo is well suited to these settings, and Laitman's inventive writing for the backing piano trio is on a similarly high level.
The Throwback, on varied poems by Paul Muldoon on the life cycle, benefits from the warm, incisive baritone and exemplary diction of William Sharp. The off-centre carousel feel of "The Ancestor" displays a quirky humour as striking as the deeper expression assayed in the other settings. In the cycle Becoming a Redwood soprano Barbara Quintiliani is a bit wobbly at times, though she is effective in the reflective moments, as with the beautifully floated vocalise at the coda of "Pentecost." The song that gives the disc its title is one of the finest here, with the piano postlude sensitively performed by the composer.
The Apple Orchard offers a gentle pastoralism, nicely etched by tenor Robert McPherson. "This Space Available" shows a more whimsical side, with a witty epigrammatic vocal line, as does the cabaret song Being Happy with its absurdist verse of social manners deftly delivered by baritone Lee Poulis. Written to poems of CGR Shepherd, Long Pond Revisited closely reflects the poems' loss, anger and acceptance, with obbligato cello adding to the burnished expressive depth, though the settings here are not quite as subtly varied in profile, dark and lovely as they are.
But this is a minor quibble in a disc that gives increasing evidence of a major talent; Lori Laitman's beautiful, sensitively crafted songs deserve to be performed widely, and much better known. Apart from some shrillness from the high female voices, the singers' inspired performances provide Laitman's music with all the advocacy it deserves. --Lawrence A Johnson』

It is similar to their $1000 and up firewalls but geared towards the SOHO market. It is very easy to configure through a browser, though you can access it through a terminal. I should qualify easy, as it is not easy for someone new to firewalls. It is not impossible and with some diligence you could get it working but it isn't linksys plug it in an go easy. It is very flexible. I have used two for site to site VPN which words perfectly. The onboard processor is powerful enough to encrypt a lot of traffic. the streaming antivirus and antispam are great because you don't have to run antivirus on each computer. Now for the bad part. the antivirus, antispamn, automatic failover, and other advanced features require an expensive subscription, $249 a year, still cheaper than a cisco firewall. Now the annoying part. There's a five node limit meaning it will protect only 5 IP addresses. Here's the problem. If it is acting as your router and dchp server it counts every IP address leased against the node limit, even if the IP addresses go to things like network printers or DVRs or other things you don't need protected and will never go out to the net. After it gives 5 IP addresses the sixth IP can't get to the internet. Worse it takes 1 hour to refresh the node license so you have to reboot the device to release a node license. You can't create a pool of IPs that don't need protection. According to support the only workaround is to use a second router to create a subnet or to configure devices with static IPs and not give them a router IP. This second solution didn't work for me. Even if I didn't explicitly put a router IP in my HP network printer, it assumed from the subnet what the router was and hit it, and even though it had a static IP , counted against the node limit. You can buy more nodes, from 5-25 for $500, but between the nodes and the other license, now you are approaching a full $1000 cisco box.』
(The Gold Standard in Firewalls - Cheap) 『I have deployed Checkpoint's regular products in the past and the only big downside was the cost. This product delivers the gold standard in firewalls for a trivial amount and Checkpoint's GUI configuration tool is one of the best.
That said, Checkpoint's support has never been anywhere near as strong as Cisco's or IBM's, but I have rarely ever had to call them with their main line products and never with the Sofaware line. Checkpoint seems to have gotten by their on-line subscription problems, and this now works well.
I have used several of these Sofaware boxes for office to office VPNs and it is dead simple to setup. The anti-virus scanning works well, although I have had to turn it off, for outgoing mail only, because of some timeout issues delivering mail to Africa. If you are going to use the spam filtering you need to know that this solution requires you to re-route your mail to Checkpoint's spam scanners, which then forward the mail along to your internal mail server; you will need to fuss with your DNS MX records.
Firmware updates of the firewall software are automatic and transparent. This is a major plus as getting updates to a Cisco PIX and many other firewalls, too, involve a manual firmware update.

(Nice appliance - support is horrendous) 『I recently bought a Safe@Office 500 for our small office. The appliance itself is very nice, throughput is decent. The issue pops up when you subscribe to antivirus and support. The division of checkpoint that handles this is Safaware. Their website is currently broken so you can't register (11/4/06). This of course does not stop them from getting you to buy subscriptions through the appliance... unfortunately you can't use them. There is chat help on the sofaware website but you can't use it if you are not signed in which of course you can't do. No support numbers are listed in any of the documentation. It took three calls to Checkpoint to get a number. The tech answered "hello"... no company name. I could barely hear him... he blamed it on a VOIP connection to India.
Most of what we were able to figure out we did on our own, a waste of two business days. We still cannot figure out how to subscribe to or use the antispam features. Getting the right ports open for Quickbooks was not easy. The wireless and wired are on a different range of IP addresses, so you will not see any peer to peer networking without mapping the directories.

Most of all though, I love the no-nonsense advice that was also peppered with humor and wit. (Just Learn It!) 『A few days ago, I finished reading Roger Schank's latest book, Lessons in Learning, e-Learning, and Training, and I've recommended it to everyone with whom I've spoken at any length since. If you follow Roger's work, you won't find many new concepts. What's new is that Roger has chiselled his messages in bold relief so that only the totally clueless can fail to get the point. He eats his own cooking by bringing his material to life through compelling stories.
Admittedly, Roger is a lightening rod. No one who has experienced him is ambivalent. Many people can't get past his faux-movie star persona: Roger's a big, buff, bald, larger-than-life character who beats George Hamilton in the tanning department and tops Salvador Dali in ego. He's also an original thinker whose acolytes from the Institute for Learning Sciences have spread his gospel far and wide. He particularly irks academics because he's one of them, having been a professor at Stanford, Yale, Carnegie-Mellon, and Northwestern.
Ruth Clark sums up Lessons in Learning, e-Learning, and Training in the foreword: "The basic premise of this book is that learning is an inductive process. In everyday words, learning occurs by experience, and the best instruction offers learners opportunities to distill their knowledge and skills from interactive stories."

Roger's latest Educational Outrage column rants about criticism of Trump University (of which he is Chief Learning Officer). Why does the press take on Donald Trump for naming a university for himself but accept it when Leland Stanford did the same thing? Actually, Stanford named the school for his son, Leland Stanford, Jr., but that's beside the point. The reaction of the press sets Roger in motion on an old but worthy rant:
The question is why school teaches the subjects that it does and whether that should be allowed to continue. Most of what you learn in high school is irrelevant to anyone's real life. Ask any high school student - they know this all too well. The truth is that unless you want to be a professor, most of what you learn in college or graduate school can be quite irrelevant as well. Even MBA programs, practical as they may be in principle, tend to forget that the students are just there to learn how to do well in business. Professors, who are of course quite academic, might not be the best determiners of what students want to learn or need to learn. Typically they just teach what they want to teach, which is not the same thing. The high school curriculum, school incarnate, was designed by a bunch of professors in 1892. They were not thinking about what students might need to learn in order to succeed in today's world.

After making this point he goes on for the rest of the book telling stories. Mr. Schank uses stories as a teaching aid. Stories move material from the what he wants to tell the student, to the this is "interesting or potentially useful" column in the student mind. Motivated students learn.
The next strongest point is that people learn mostly by doing. Some things are hard to train by doing. How do you train Art History by doing? Well, how about you give the class some pictures, with the instruction that some of them are old masters and some are forgeries. The class assignment is to determine which is which. Now the students have to really examine the pictures. They have to learn techniques, they have to DO!.
Finally he gets to eLearning and to a discussion on what high school and the rest of our educational system teaches. Covers just about every disease we are going to encounter in our work. A lot more portable than carrying around a med-surg book and a lot more succinct that a med-surg book. Gives you "just the facts, ma'am!". Provides a summary of the disease and nursing considerations, treatment, and other practical infor for caring for pts. Highly recommended for the student or practicing nurse. I have it on my PDA. If you are going to get the software version, get the Skyscape software version, not Mobipocket. Skyscape software is much more user-friendly in terms of manuevering around each entry. Skyscape uses a tabbed format for access of the various types of info within each entry (such as Summary of the disease, nursing considerations, treatment and tests, pt teaching etc), whereas Mobipocket is basically just an electronic reader. You must cursor through the entire entry until you find what you are looking for. I can recommend this by experience and I bought several of my first reference books in the Mobipocket format and have since taken them off my PDA and replaced them with Skyscape versions. A major waste of money, but the Mobipocket versions just took too long to find the info I wanted.
