Oh yes, I gave in two years ago and selected a logo to place next to my name. First, I chose a cat, then another cat on the next order, then a stack of books (I'm a librarian and cat-lover). That's my only concession to prettifying my checks.
But today I had to break my rule and buy this Laurel Burch Purple Cat Checkbook Cover. I don't mind prettifying the cover. In fact, I am delighted with the whimsy and colors. I might even smile when I whip out the checkbook for another doling out of my hard-earned money to people and places like utilities, mortgage, credit card company, tuition for the Pretend Children, and so on.

(Best album of the year) 『This album has been out for about a year. It is being re-released by Kool Arrow in 03/04. This Album is super good. Paul Mendoza is a brilliant vocalist and he shines bright on this 3rd Unjust album. Also, Mikey Merino, is the new guitar guy. He's really good as is the whole band.
Musically, the songs are tight and well written. It fills the gaps between bay area metal, emo-alternative, and progressive rock. Think of it like this. Take a little bit of Muse, throw in some Faith no More, a pinch of Bjork, and add something you never heard before.
If you want something a little heavier, check out Unjust's previous albums. Especially Makeshift Grey. It is pretty exceptional as well.』

When one picks up a book with a title as authoritative, as definitive, as The Scottish Kitchen, one rather expects the pages between the covers to be authoritative and definitive, but also traditional. Trotter does, generally, keep to the mandate, though some of these recipes do veer off to the side and into cuisines that arrived on the coattails of immigrants over the years. That aside, the book is lavishly, and wonderfully, illustrated, and Trotter's comments are pointed and lively (too much so, sometimes; one wishes for an editor who'd mentioned that toning down one's use of exclamation points is usually a good thing). And, of course, there is a haggis recipe.

That philosophy seems to have been the guiding one in the writing of this monograph. The entire monograph is single minded in its devotion to a rigorous development of the algebra behind the theory.
Any good mathematician will cringe when confronted with the appeals to intuition or common sense so frequently used by quantum theory texts to justify the mathematics, and no such appeals are present in Araki's outstanding monograph. What's more, the book is as self-contained as one could expect from this kind of monograph, and the notation is modern (so, if reading Wigner or von Neumann has ever caused you a headache, this book might be the remedy).
Even better is Araki's use of C*-Algebras throughout the text. Often, the use of C*-Algebras is mentioned in the physics literature, but rarely expounded on in an introductory fashion. All too often, we're left to dig through the journals only to find applications to very specific structures which have been modified, for the sake of mathematics, in such a way as to lose their physicality. Of course, there is nothing wrong with those kinds of studies, but they aren't physics. Araki's book is.
The downside is the exorbitant price, and I do not own a copy as a result.
