Seagram (R.I.P.), representin' East Oakland, Cali, definitely delivers on his second album, 1994's Reality Check On Rap-A-Lot Records. He is a great lyricist and has a good, loud rapping voice and a good flow to go with that. This cat can spit. Beats are vintage bay area G-Funk, and are relaxing and melodic. Production goes to Seagram, with instrumentation by Troy White, Mike Dean, Mark Anthony, Eaton Fox, and Seag himself. A great summertime cruisin' G-Funk era anthem is "Eastside" with cool layers of keyboard melody. Another one is "Gangstas and Players" (f/ Too Short) both kickin some street oriented, pimp game. The beat is cool Oakland swingin' with a neat whiny synth in the hook. With styles so different, the 2 go well together here. "Gangsta Livin'" is a cool joint where Seag discusses life in the hood without glorifying it. He flows really hard here/ "The Town" (F/ Angie and Gangsta P) is a dark anthem of Oakland. The beat is vintage Rap-A-Lot almost southern style. "13 Deep" has a mega-relaxed, smooth, twangy guitar diff driven G-Funk beat. The lyrics showcase Gangsta P and seag trying to keep their head up living in a crime ridden neighborhood and growing up in the legal system (California Youth Authority). "Birth" definitely rings true. This joint is about loving the children you give birth to and being there for them. The beat is upbeat and melody driven funk. This song definitely touches the heart. It has an Isley Brothers "For The Love Of You" sample. Another deep song is "Where Do We Go From Here" where Seagram analyzes the plight of losing friends and family members and tries to move on. The beat is sunny R and B inflected with a great hook by Suzette. "No Matter The Cost" has a cool G-Funk atmosphere with a sweet and sunny beat perfect to roll to down the avenue to. I would say that this album is as sunny Cali G-Funk era as Warren G and Snoop Dogg with respect to the vibes the beats themselves give off even though the lyrics can be hard core. I love the emotional and lyrical depth Seagram puts into this classic. It is expensive and rare now, but I recommend saving up some extra ends now before it goes for 100 plus dollars. Fans of 2 Pac, Scarface, Big Syke and the like will definitely dig Seagram. Too bad, he had to fall victim to the game. RIP to a real rapper.
I am a big fan of west coast rap. Im proud to say i dont own any southern california albums. The bay area lost a legend that many people dont know about. Do some research. Everyone can rap about livin tough, but who can you trust. They do it for the money, SEAG does it to paint a picture using every sense. Dont let the other review turn you away! All if albums are 5 stars. From beginning to end repeat is a must

Seagrams rhymes had a feel to them, they showed up above alot of other rappers. It's like the people that know, know when someone is trying to impress on tracks about sh#t they ain't really doing, but some other people fall for it. And the people that know are normally up on things too because they know when it's realness that someone is rapping. And thats what Seagram was doing, rapping real. He knew what his limits were about saying things on records and a lot of people can relate to that because they are in the same game, it takes one to know one. His beats were heavy and he always gave his whole in his lyrics because he is far from fake. He never changed his style and made things worse without cause like tupac after joining deathrow. He had true heart and was someone who was deep in the real drugs game, thats why he never talked the wrong sh#t. Sadly he got murdered which too is something that comes with how deep you get. (Definitely not their best - but definitely worth buying)

If I had to pick my favorite three songwriters from the many brilliant pop/rock based artists that have graced this planet, Smokey Robinson, Paul Simon and Curtis Mayfield would probably top the list. Curtis had such innovative arrangement ideas, thought provoking lyrics, and an absolutely mesmerizing falsetto. (That's not to mention a truly unique guitar playing style that was solely perfected by himself, and Marv Tarplin of the Miracles).

In any event, Check Out Your Mind was the last Impressions album with Curtis captaining the ship. Along with the title track, this record has six or seven very strong songs that fit right in with how Curtis' writing had evolved at this time. There are two throw backs to the the Impressions early 60's material, and only one song from the ten, (Madam Mary) that doesn't work for me.

Conversely, the same can not be said for my opinion of the second album on here. Although Curtis had officially left the Impressions, he still fully produced and penned six of the eight tracks on Times Have Changed. With Curtis' solo career in full swing, this album almost comes across like he's distracted. There is absolutely no continiuity through the tracks and only one song, (Our Loves Goes On and On) I would place in the strong category. The remaining tracks range from decent to marginal at best.

At the end of the day, this is definitely not the first place you want to stop to familiarize yourself with Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions. Outside of One By One, any other album in their entire catalog would do the trick. But once you've been hooked in by one of the most talented and overlooked groups and need to hear it all, you won't be disappointed with this purchase. Check Out Your Mind is a very worthy addition to the Impressions superior catalog, and is an album that has been out of print for far too long.

On that note, I think it is important to give a big salutation to Rhino and American Beat for their commitment to reissuing vital recordings such as this, when they know it's not going to be a best seller. Thank you for allowing us to hear this wonderful and important music again.

(Sadly, I found mine to be inaccurate)

I had high hopes for this thermometer, after reading a medical article comparing it with standard mercury (Hg) thermometers in a clinical trial. All the accuracy, but without the significant health risks if it breaks. Well, I still have an "old fashioned" Hg thermometer, in addition to an electronic probe and an ear device from a major manufacturer (for the home, not professional market).

When I purchased this, I compared it to the Hg thermometer, since I have one and I was curious about the new Hg substitute. First, I put them both under my tongue simultaneously. This one read about 2 degrees lower than the Hg standard. I thought that its larger size might have allowed air to get by my lips&cool it. I then did two back-to-back measurements; Geratherm, Hg; Geratherm, Hg. Four minutes each, all at rest, one immediately after the other, and always placing them in the same location. Both devices were "internally" consistent - that is the Hg gave the same temp both times, sequentially, as did the Geratherm. So far, so good. Consistency is necessary in a measuring instrument. HOWEVER, on both occasions the Geratherm now measured a full two (2) degrees HIGHER than the Hg! NOT good! I then checked my temp using the oral electronic probe; it was 0.2 degrees off from the Hg. I then used the ear probe (both ears) and surprisingly it, too, was actually very close to the Hg (0.2 degrees difference between the 2 ears; average 0.3 degrees off from Hg, just a bit lower otic (ear) than oral).

For this reason, I'm returning it, and I'm going to try another one. I suspect that it's a manufacturing defect explained by the construction of this thermometer - it's a glass tube within a second glass housing, and there's a paper scale behind the capillary tube containing the liquid. If that paper is not placed properly, the reading will be "off." The device's consistency suggests that the liquid expanded properly&consistently in response to my temp. My old Hg thermometer has the typical printing on the glass. Sure, that could be off, but those devices have been standardized over decades. And the good correlation with other devices (particularly the electronic probe, which I've calibrated against known standards - freezing&boiling water,&it's accurate) suggests that my old thermometer is the correct one.

Other comments - I didn't find it particularly worse than the old standard to "shake down;" each took the same # of shakes to return to baseline. I'd seen reviews elsewhere in which users had complained about this being difficult. Yes, if one has arthritis, neither this nor a mercury thermometer are easy to use, and you're probably best off with a high rated electronic probe. Also, the outer glass housing is much larger (about 3X) the size of the Hg thermometer, which made it a little more cumbersome to hold under the tongue, but not impossible. Because of its size, I don't think it would be particularly good for a child under about age 7-8.

Hope this helps other users. I am concerned about this, especially as a medical professional, because not everyone has a mercury thermometer to compare against. This 2 degree difference could mean a LOT if you're using this in a "sick" situation (e.g. deciding if your older child can go to school or not). I plan on contacting the manufacturer about this.
