(A Good Rice Cooker)
『This is a very, very good rice cooker. I have used it around a dozen times since buying it. I use Jasmine Rice from Walmart, and it tastes delicious. I rinse the rice in cold water before putting it into the rice cooker, and I haven't once had scorched rice.

The cooking pot is extremely easy to clean, just wipe it out after it cools off, or before the next use, and it's good to go. The food steamer works great on pre-cooked meat; I haven't tried vegetables or raw meats yet.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants a rice cooker. I'm considering buying one for m mother. Follow the directions and it will give you no hassles.』

(Good Value for the Price)
『I've had this for a couple of weeks. I've used it several times, for a variety of things. It does make white rice well - and it's so easy to throw in the rice and water, close and hit start - by the time the rest of dinner's ready, your rice is done.

I've had no problems with it mechanically.
- The nonstick pan is really nonstick - it cleans up very easily, which is nice b/c it can't go in the dishwasher.
- The rice cup measure, steamer basket, paddle and ladle that come with it are very cheap, but they do the job.
- It is pretty large (only slightly smaller than my 5 quart crockpot), and I want to keep it out on the counter. But I don't think it could be any smaller and still cook the volume it does.
- The interior lid is kind of a challenge, b/c you have to clean it in place - but it does seem to wipe down pretty easily, and the steam vent fixture is removable so you can get it under running water and get any gunk out of it.
- The cord is NOT retractable, which I know it is on more expensive models, but I can live with that.
- The timer only allows you to select a 'ready time' by whole hours away. So, if you're setting it at 11:30pm, you could choose 6 hours (for a 5:30am breakfast) or 7 hours (for a 6:30am breakfast). kind of obnoxious if you wanted to eat at 6. But it does just flip over to warm when the food is ready, so depending on what you're cooking, just pick the earlier time and you should be fine.

I mostly bought this items to help in my quest to eat more whole grains, and I"m still experimenting. In addition to plain white rice, which it does fine with, I've tried other items with this cooker, with mixed results:
- Steel Cut Oats - I set up overnight and used the delay timer so they'd be ready for breakfast. (This is the time i learned about the timer only being whole hours - but the oats did fine being ready 30 minutes early and then just left on warm til i was ready to eat them.
- split pea soup - i tried cooking a soup mix i had. you were supposed to cook the dried split peas over a simmer after bringing water to a boil. I added the peas and water to the cooker all at once. I think 5 cups water was too much...I had a geyser! but the soup came out fine.
- fiesta rice (1 c rice, 1 c salsa, 1.5 c water, pinch salt) - my biggest success. threw it all together and by the time i had the taco filling browned and the cheese shredded, i had a delicious side for my tacos.
- kasha - not good. I'm not sure it was the cooker though. I wanted to have it ready when I got up in the morning, so i put it all in the night before and used the timer. Either I added too much water, or you shouldn't let the buckwheat groats soak overnight, or it sat on warm too long after cooking (see note on delay cook timer), but it was absolute mush - a very unpleasant texture. I'll try kasha again with a little less water and when i can check it for texture while cooking. it was such a disappointment, though, because it smelled so good when i woke up.

All in all, I think this cooker is a good value for the money. I wasn't willing to shell out close to $200 for something I wasn't sure i'd use all that often. I think if you want an 'entry-level' rice cooker in this price range (I paid $35 on amazon.com in January 2010), this one is fine.』

『Found this to be a very straightforward cooker. Used the proportion of rice to liquid in the book but results were not as good. Have been using a 2:1 proportion of liquid:rice and have had great results. Have cooked wild&whole grain brown rice, black japonica, and wehani, as well as, everyday brown and white rice. Once cooking cycle is complete, fluff the rice and continue on warming cycle. This has produced good results every time thus far. Simple to use, consistent results, and easy clean-up.』

『Simply superior to any of the "wick" type you will buy. Very well worth the extra $$』

『The humidifier is solid. The settings are sensitive enough that you can really adjust the level of moisture in the air. The machine is almost silent which is a plus. The tank could be a bit bigger, but no complaints there. Only drawback is that sometimes it can be hard to unscrew the stopper. But all in all a very good humidifier and I had bought quite a few.

(There Could Be Better Ones)
『I purchased this humidifier about two years ago. It does put out a decent amount of cool mist, but the unit has recently become very noisy. I am unable to open up the unit to determine the cause of the noise, so to be on the safe side I've decided to trash it. I expected the unit to last longer than two years.

This humidifier is also very messy when refilling the tank because water collects on the bottom of the tank and drips all over when removed from the reservoir. It is also more difficult to clean (I bleach once a week to kill bacteria/mold) compared to the Vicks model that I own.』

(Excellent fog machine)
『We've had no problems with this at all. The filler cap has to have a gasket to seal it and so it takes a little bit of hand and wrist strength to open and close it, which could be a problem for very elderly or debilitated people, but I'm not sure how that could have been avoided. The volume of mist is high in both the warm and cool modes. Noise is inaudible unless you are very close to it in a very quiet room. The mist is fine enough to disperse readily in dry air. If it condenses on surfaces it's a sign that the humidity is high and that the humidifier needs to be turned down. The volume control is effective and the nozzles easy to direct.』

(Great humidifier)
『I've gone through probably 4 or 5 humidifiers in the last 10 years, and this is by far the best unit I've ever owned. Here are the issues I've had with previous humidifiers that are solved by this particular humidifier:

1. The mist it creates is very fine, which seems to translating into the moisture staying in the air and not collecting on the windows.
2. I haven't had any mold build up in the unit, even after 2 months of use.
3. This unit takes up very little space on my dresser -- I've got a towel underneath it just in case but I haven't had any water leak out so far.

As described in other reviews here, there is a misting plate instead of the wicking material used more commonly in humidifiers. I use the cool mist setting unless I am sick, which is when I turn on the warmer mist -- both settings work fine.』

『This innovative breakthrough album ends on a bum note. Why did anyone think Kenny Hagood was a good singer? He almost sounds like a Bill Murray parody. At best, his vocal performance is workman like, at worst, it's boring and trite. Birth of the Cool is much better listening experience if you just skip the last track!』

『Imogen Heap's "Ellipse" was a close second, and Bruce Hornsby's "Levitate" was also great, but Ben Harper and Relentless7's "White Lies for Dark Times" was the best record of 2009, confirming what many have suspected for some time--that much of the most interesting music being made today has roots in Austin. This is one of those records where the sum is greater than its parts, holding together both as a fantastic rock record and tour de force work of art. Enjoy!』

『I have never been a huge Ben Harper fan, but after this CD I am well on my way. Ben Harper has teamed up with some fantastic musicians on this album. The drummer and the bass player lay a great foundation for Ben Harpers vocals and incredible guitar playing. If you like 60's style rock and blues with an emphasis on the rock, you will enjoy this cd. This is my first Ben Harper cd since his first 2, and let me tell you, he has come a LONG way. The simplest way to sum up this album....WOW!』

This is one of those movies for me. It is romantic and quirky. The movie is pretty without lots of fussy, overdone set design. The characters can really shine. You will see an older Skeet as the star of Jericho on TV.』

『I liked this film. It's the story of a young man who has a special healing "touch" that causes stigmata, bleeding from the body where Jesus also bled from his crucifixion(hands, feet, and side). Juvenal(Skeet Ulrich)is the main character. He has no idea why this happens to him and truly wishes it wouldn't. He does like healing people, though, which toughens his dilemma. I also read the book by Elmore Leonard. What impresses me mostly about this movie is how closely Skeet Ulrich portrays the main character--right down to the clothes he wears. His softness and shyness comes to life on the screen. I want this movie on DVD and soon. FLIX has it for rental, but I want to buy it.

『This is not the kind of movie which is destined to break box-office records.

I'm going to start in a pessimistic sort of way, by saying that almost every character in the film is a caricature of some sort. There's Christopher Walken as a money-vampire who looks at a miracle and starts making plans to exploit it. There's Tom Arnold, the religious fanatical - enough said. There are Gina Gershon and Janeane Garofalo in supporting roles as an incisive talk show host and a cynical newspaper reporter, respectively. And then somehow, caught in the middle of all this is a shy, confused, tender young man with the power to heal.

Juvenal (Skeet Ulrich) is not one of the booming, preaching images that many people have come to associate with saints. We don't learn how he got his powers - which makes sense, because he doesn't know either. He is not flawless; he is attracted to women and does not necessarily agree with the philosophies of the church. And rather than being a pure white winged angel with a golden touch, he bleeds profusely from the marks of the stigmata as he performs his miracles.

We meet him as a woman named Lynn (Bridget Fonda) is roped in by money-grubbing Bill Hill (Walken) to try to find out if Juvenal is for real. He sees through her straight away, remarking casually that she was going to tell him that she had a tumour in her breast. Their relationship blossoms, which angers church leader August (Tom Arnold) who would prefer Juvenal to remain pure and holy.

We could perhaps have done without some of the supporting characters. Wonderful as Gina Gershon is, especially as you watch her accent become suddenly cultured when the cameras switch on, both her and Janeane Garofalo's characters would probably not have been missed. I'm not sure whether to recommend this film or not. If you're looking for a raucous comedy or a big-action thriller, this isn't the one for you. I loved it - but rent it first, and make up your own mind.』

『Apparently, none of the original Horrible Horror has survived; a fact I was unaware of when I bought this tape. It is in fact Zacherley much later making a special about cleaning out his castle and playing some of his favorite clips of movies and previews. He's still hilarious, but the clips have almost no commentary from Zacherley himself.
I was a little disappointed by that as my father had told me how great Zacherley was on his original show and I was hoping to see some of that. Still a great buy, but not exactly what I was looking for.』

GOODTIMES' HORRIBLE HORROR is a genuine collectible. The tape is recorded in LP mode with a strong linear monaural track. Video quality is good as is tracking stabiliy on my VCR. This two-hour program is not available on DVD.

We open with Lugosi from Glen or Glenda.
Zacherley is vacating the castle after a 500 year lease expired. He has Igor run various reels of sci-fi and fright film snippets, also excerpts of trailers and other rarities including humorous outtakes from Abbott&Costello Meet Frankenstein.

REEL ONE- The Killer Shrews, The Alligator People, Indestructible Man, Abbott&Costello, Snow Creature, The Blob, I was a Teenage Werewolf, Little Shop of Horrors, War of the Colossal Beast and Attack of the Puppet People.

Zach plays with gag props then:
REEL TWO- Robot Monster, 1952 Skippy Award nominee "Electro the Robot," Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, The Hideous Sun Demon, Captain Midnight (TV) and Flash Gordon (TV).

Our host flips through Dracula's ledger and presents Drac's home movies:

The Cool Ghoul probes two brains, then:

REEL SEVEN- Tales of Frankenstein, Abbott&Costello, Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome, Lugosi plays chess with Karloff, House on Haunted Hill, The Screaming Skull, Macabre and Glen or Glenda.

Zach leaves us all with a jolly, "Bye-bye, whatever you are!" and a silent fright film plays behind the closing credits.』

『At the bottom of the box for Horrible Horror, the tagline reads "The Ultimate Party Tape!" For once, product self-promotion is an understatement. Not only is this the ultimate party tape, it is also fantastic for downtime viewing with some herbal tea as well.

Basically, Horrible Horror is a compilation of excerpts from black&white horror and sci-fi films and trailers from the 1930s-1950s interspersed with hilariously funny (and bizarre) improvised interludes featuring Zacherly. This guy, the "Cool Ghoul," is the original horror show host who has been around since at least the time of Pat Boone, as you'll see in the video. The plot, such as it is, is that Zacherly's lease has expired and he has to leave his castle. So as he cleans out the film vaults in his dungeon, he entertains us with clips from his favorite golden moldies. If you have the right kind of mind and proclivities, this film is a gem.

Many classic lines from bad movies show up in the excerpted films, and the beauty of Horrible Horror is that you don't have to suffer through entire films to hear them. Zacherly's rambling discourses are equally funny, and if you are like me, you'll find yourself incessantly repeating many of the things he says while cleaning out his dungeon. It's that ridiculous.

(J thinks it drags in spots and should be rated 4 stars, but those average out to 4.5, and so we round up to 5, and she is wrong anyway because it does not drag. Ever. It simply rocks.)

If you just want to have something going in the background, this tape is perfect. This tape is also perfect if you want to just watch TV to laugh, snack, and chill out (i.e., you don't want to expend the energy for a real plot or or character development). Very few movies make me comfie just doing that, so for me Horrible Horror is worth its weight in gold.

(If anyone from Goodtimes media should happen to read this, please re-release this video as a DVD. Our VHS copies won't last forever...)』

(Probably the Best of the Genre)
『This is a 110-minute tape of short takes from some of the cheesiest horror movies ever made, often featuring big stars. The clips are interspersed with entertaining commentary from a narrator who was prominent about 40 years ago as a host of B horror movies on TV, Zacherley. Surprisingly, his little snippets are a welcome addition to the programming, although I am not sure I can say why, since his narration is in the form of sidebars of nonsense during what would have been commercial breaks on TV. Anyway, the video is thematically arranged by star and sub-genres, such as zombies for sub-genres and Bela Legosi for an example of a star. The best stuff does come in the first half hour, but the entire video is certainly worth watching. With the exception of one short scene, I can also recommend it for fun family viewing. Make sure to check out this video if you're a fan of B-horror flicks! You won't be disappointed!』

(Superlative, gripping prison drama.)
『Paul Newman stars as eccentric war veteran, Lucas Jackson. Luke lives in a tiny southern town. And he gets himself sentenced to a chain-gang, after he gets drunk and destroys some parking meters one night.

The chain-gang camp, is run by a seemingly fatherly, yet ruthless Warden, called the Captain. Luke and his fellow inmates, are forced to perform back-breaking chain-gang duty, in the scorching southern heat every day. Under the directive of the Captain, brutal punishment is meted out by the prison guards, to any inmate who disobeys the stringent prison rules.

Luke, rebellious soul that he is, refuses to knuckle-under to the sadistic guards. Luke's steely determination, wins him the reverent admiration of the other inmates. After two failed escape attempts, Luke is subjected to vicious torture, by the guards. The Captain, with the help of the monstrous guards, makes it his mission to break Luke's spirit.

Paul Newman is amazing in his role as Luke. I couldn't imagine any other actor portraying the character of Luke, as deftly as Newman did. George Kennedy plays Luke's burly inmate pal, Dragline, with consummate skill. Jo Van Fleet, gives a wonderfully poignant performance, as Luke's dying mother, Arleta. And Strother Martin, conveys the obsessive resolve of the Captain character, with a frightening intensity.

Other members of the supporting cast shine too. Dennis Hopper, Lou Antonio, Ralph Waite, and Harry Dean Stanton, all give moving performances as prison inmates. Bob Woodward gives a hideously chilling quality, to his mute, blind, sharpshooter road-boss character.

In summation, Cool Hand Luke will always remain a classic of American cinema, for generations to come.』

(PAUL NEWMAN'S BEST)
『This is BY FAR my Favourite Paul Newman film. I love a good prison flick, and this one Really Delivers.

The film is a classic these days, with a great ensemble cast, and Newman as the anti-hero. The prisoners work on a Chain Gang in the south. And Newman is a New Arrival who earns everyones respect quickly. The films follows the everyday life of these men in a small prison, and has everything you need in a prison movie. The story is very basic, but like a lot of the classics, they do a lot with very little. So much of this is Newman dealing with being an under-acheiver and never quite feeling like he belongs anywhere. But this is nicely understated, so it does not give the film too heavy of a feeling or make it overly sappy.

The film also has a nice featurette in the special features which I quite like. It's about a half hour, and has lots of cast and crew interviews. I really like features like this, and it is done very well.

If you like classics, Paul Newman movies, Prison movies or just Good films, you check this out.

『Someone doesn't know the meaning of end to end. Technically, this is NOT end to end as we traditionally know it. The plug end also can take another strand to make a 14 foot section. But there is no plug/outlet on the other end of the strand. Also... as is marked on the box....this is INDOOR use only.

These would be good for small trees and around windows and doorways and in wreaths and in short garlands on the fireplace mantle.

If you have a post and beam room, run an extension cord up the post. Run one strand along one beam and another strand along the adjoining beam and one strand back down the post to make a "T". Do this in 2 or 4 corners for a unique effect.』

I was very happy that I did so because the length in the accompanying description indicated it was 20' or long enough for 1 strand. When I got them and put it up the length was closer to 10 feet. 『I ordered a Lakewood 4 inch fan and received a Westepoint 4 inch fan. I use the fan to cool my Tower( I have removed one side), and this fan is kinda loud. I knew it was a single speed, but all the Lakewood fans I have owned before were quieter. I couldn't send it back, as I had to have the fan to use my computer, and I do everything by computer!
I know next time I see the Lakewoods on sale someplace in person, I had better buy 4 or 5 as they run almost 24-7. If this fan lasts the year, I will feel like I got my money's worth, we will see. I do have to admit, the black frame and silver blades look nice, but no one(including me) get to see it working, it sits atop my Tower in the cubby on my desk.』

『I needed a fan when I travel to circulate air on my face, and to use to dry out my ice skates or wet boots. This fan does these limited jobs admirably. Plus it's small enough to pack in a suitcase. My fan never quit, but eventually the stand came apart from the stress of being jammed in a suitcase, hence my need to buy a replacement. Don't expect it to move air more than a couple of feet. My old one rattled slightly, but it was about the level of a snore from a medium sized dog so it wasn't horrible. If it does rattle, the construction is simple enough that you can dampen the sound yourself.

Luckily, Juno has the total support of her parents as she faces some tough decisions, flirts with adulthood and ultimately figures out where she belongs. This is a delightful and good-hearted movie. Full of life and splendidly written.』

(Quirky but endearing movie)
『It's not hard to see why the movie "Juno" became so popular. Ellen Page delivered a great performance as the character of Juno that made this movie what it is. Juno's whole matter of fact and pragmatic approach to life and all the issues she was going through was refreshing and unexpected. This is another movie where you really couldn't see where it was going until it went there.

The rest of the characters were okay to good, although the rich couple felt a little bit not-organic.

From a movie makers perspective, they brilliantly used the runners to both frame and quirkify the movie. It really worked.

The movie also touches upon some serious issues, but does so in an organic and pragmatic way, instead of the typical culture-war histrionics we often see.

My suggestion? Watch this before you watch another formulaic Hollywood dramedy and comedy!』

『Juno is a cute movie, with some offbeat comedic hooks, maybe that's what drew the Academy and critics alike to it. But for all its' uniqueness and for the hour and a half of harmless entertainment that it provided, I didn't really see anything that was worthy of a nomination. Was it an off year for movies in 2007 or what ? Juno is an interesting look at teenage pregnancy through the lens of Juno Mcguff (Ellen Page) who has just been impregnated by her friend Pauley Bleaker (Michael Cera) and now has to figure out what to do with the baby. This movie doesn't appear to take a stand on abortion even though Juno's character makes certain statements at an abortion clinic.

The story turns when Juno finds the perfect couple Mark and Vanessa (Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner.) only to discover that their no more perfect than anyone else on the planet as Mark confesses the impending divorce to Juno before talking to Vanessa. My feeling is that Mark's relationship with Juno is an underplayed phenomenon. As Juno navigates the turbulent waters of pregnancy, she also confronts the permanently altered though not destroyed relationship with Pauley and being hated by Pauley's family. I felt disconnected to the movie because I was never allowed to get invested in any one of the characters. It was just kind of a story that moved from a to b with any real emotion or feeling.

The bottom line is that Juno is high on story, but low on characterization because other than Vanessa, the characters don't really lose anything. At end of the movie, Juno and Pauley ride off past the track team as though nothing has changed, even though Juno had his baby and made the difficult decision to give the baby up for adoption. These rather wooden characters and a lack of basic human emotion detract from what could've been an otherwise engaging premise.

I used the filter with a Pro-tec cartridge last winter and didn't change the filter once. In fact, I never even looked at it until it was time to set it up again this winter. That's when I realized it was pretty moldy and I should buy a new one. I received the new filter on Dec. 22 - it didn't even last me a month!!! The only thing I did differently this time around was TRY to take better care of the filter to extend its life...because the filter arrived before the protec cartridge (both of which I ordered on Amazon) I used a drop of bleach in the water tanks. The mist had a bleach odor, which didn't bother me, but my boyfriend was concerned about our newborn breathing in the chemical - so I quit using bleach when the protect cartridge arrived. I also flipped the filter everyday, so the top part (which tended to dry out) stayed moist. Within a few days of the Protect cartridge and no bleach, the filter started to reek of mold and then it actually began to fall apart. The filter was crumbling and stunk. I just threw it out and am back online to order again. What have I learned: While my humidifier kicks butt and keeps the entire upstairs area moist in the winter, the amount of time, energy and money I spend in filters and protect cartridges just doesn't make it worthwhile.
