customer 's review (Very nice costumes&a interesting set.)
(Amazing Artistry)
(Horrid!)
(makes me soooo mad)
(Could've been better) This is a little bit more like a ice show that has been made into a movie. But it is interesting. The children are cute and the historical charactors and costumes are very nice. Katarina had a bit of a problem to deliver her lines. She should take a few more classes. But as an olympic gold metal winner of course her skating and dramatic flair was beyond question the best. The story of course is that the prince falls in love with a 'common' women and wants to get married. He of course has to give up his throne to marry her, but by the end they have found a way he can keep her and the throne.
Katarina is a beautiful women and well accepted in Europe. I am surprised that they are not offering her more jobs here in America. I know I would like to see more of her in various specials and other programing. This movie is one of my favorites. It came out quite a few years ago and I first saw it on TV in 1998. I personally love the music of this movie and especially love that I can watch this movie in such a small amount of time. I have always been a fan of Katarina Witt and will always be impressed with her style of skating. This film is an original, it was produced in 1997, long before Disney's Ice Princess was probably even on the drawing board, so there is no rip off of titles or themes. There is an European influence on this movie and it shows. I hope that other's look at this movie for the artistry behind it and enjoy it! There is nothing good about this movie unless you like watching German figure skaters trying to rap. makes me so mad to see this movie copy ice princess. it sucks. they stole the title and the love between the girl and boy and the ice skating. heloooooo, copying will get you no were! I was interested in seeing this movie, so I rented it from Netflix. Anyway, I really didn't care for it. Certain parts were alright, but I could've done without some too. If you want to see a good skating movie, rent Cutting Edge. Former Olympic and World Figure Skating Champion Katarina Witt stars in this stunning contemporary interpretation of the classic tale of Cinderella. Rerations < The Ice Princess [VHS] >

customer 's review (Not for Deneuve admirers)
(The best French Deconstructivist Film)
(Auteuil-Deneuve combine in fascinating cop story.) Deneuve is in a subdued role in this film. She's also in a supporting role so the film cover is a bit misleading. The story is not as strong as others that she's chosen.Daniel Auteuil is great as the cop who is entangled in the life of a trouble-making young woman. Extremely sexy in this role, he plays the role of a strong yet conflicted law enforcer well. The film is a bit weak in its flow. It's not the worst film but it's also not extremely good either. Les Voleurs is an excellently acted, directed, and written film. This is Auteuil's finest acting to date. Furthermore, the film is the best example of the use of deconstructivism in film making. Les Voleurs is the reason why I believe the French are still the best film makers today. Just a warning to younger viewers. Some scenes can be disturbing. Daniel Auteuil never ceases to amaze. This versatile actor ("Jean de Florette,""Un Coeur en Hiver") is never the same character more than once, it seems, which is what acting is about, I suppose. In"Thieves"he is a tough cop who is estranged from his family, a group of dedicated organized criminals. He is the black sheep. His brother is killed in an attempted heist, and this incident is the core of the story. He has fallen in love with Juliette (Laurence Côté), whose brother is a member of the family gang, and his life is torn apart. Catherine Deneuve actually has a small part in the story, but carries it off with her usual panache. An excellent cop story, French style. Catherine Deneuve, Daniel Auteuil, and director André Téchiné collaborate for the second time (following their outstandingMy Favorite Season) in a powerful story about a Paris cop (Auteuil) who comes from a criminal family. When his father and brother are murdered, suspicion shifts to his lover (actress Laurence Côté), who then disappears. Auteuil's character reluctantly teams up with her lesbian girlfriend (Catherine Deneuve) both to find her and clear her name. The gripping story is told in a nonlinear series of overlapping chapters taking place before, during, and after the killing. Time bends and shifts, forcing the action to ripple through an ever-widening pool of neuroses and tragedy. The best part of the film, however, is the always- mesmerizing cold-fusion chemistry between Deneuve and Auteuil, two great actors who never wear their hearts on their sleeves.--Tom Keogh Rerations < Les Voleurs [VHS] >

customer 's review (GALLIC PYGMALION........)
(Worth watching if you saw the remake) "DON'T CHANGE A HAIR"! Yes, we've all heard that before, and 'stay as sweet as you are' - another old chestnut!WELL, this misplaced jewel of a movie is all about Eve and a somewhat cautionary tale about 'Transforming' - difficult if you are the glamorous Michele Morgan initially as the somewhat dowdy heroine, almost pushed into changing or 'augmenting' her appearance, and boy is there a transformation - with not too happy results.....not quite the Frankenstein myth, but the concept translates quite well. It's a slightly bitter French pill - aptly conceived way ahead of its time! Except for the title - this has no bearing whatsoever on the rather vanilla remake [?] was it? Do try to locate this one - well worth the effort - and always contemporary! I loved the Barbra Streisand movie so I just had to see the original it was based on. This is definitely worth watching if you've seen that version. This is much darker than the American version. I can't say one was better than the other because both have their strengths and weaknesses. For example, the remake is a little long while this one is the right length. It shows a teacher (who lives with his mother) who places an ad to find a wife. This couple arranges to have him"meet"their unattractive daughter who's inlove with this guy who her attractive sister pretty much stole from her. The teacher and the ugly duckling get married&have children. All seems fine until ten years later, when the couple meets a plastic surgeon who offers the wife a new face. And since it's French, there's stuff in this movie you won't see in American films from the 50's. I think this is definitely worth watching... especially if you saw the whitewashed 1996 version. Moral of the story:"a woman's body is hers and it is not a man's place to tell her what to do with it!"

customer 's review (Das Madchen Rosemarie) This movie is loosely based on a real life person Rosemarie Nitribitt. It's a really good German drama about a wild girl who uses her looks and manipulation to get ahead. There is some great acting here by Nina Hoss and Matthieu Carriere. German actress Nina Hoss gives a commanding performance inA Girl Called Rosemarie, based on the true story of a modern-day courtesan. During West Germany's rise to economic recovery in the 1950s, Rosemarie Nittribit (Hoss) pulls out of orphaned destitution by selling herself, using her wits as much as her charms to slowly elevate her social status. She gets embroiled with a wealthy industrialist named Konrad Hartog (Heiner Lauterbach) whom she expects to marry--only to discover that he already has a fiancée. While coping with this blow to her plans, a French businessman trains her in good manners and upper-class fashion so that she can help him blackmail German businessmen; but Rosemarie never stops trying to win back Hartog, until utter abandonment leads her to seek revenge. Attention to detail and compelling performances make this movie an exemplary portrait of sex, power, and manipulation.--Bret Fetzer Rerations < A Girl Called Rosemary [Region 2] >
