Political correctness aside (one reviewer gave the entire 22 tracks 1 star due to what was perceived as "cruelty to animals" in one track - completely missing the point of the tune), this is the perfect disc to throw into the player when on long drives with children old enough to appreciate the humor and gleefully sing along.
The rest of the multi-page insert provides the lyrics to each tune, accompanied by suggestions for games, recommended books, and how to use the songs to broaden their literacy.

(What a cute and fun musical delight!) 『My little 3 year old loved this CD especially the songs Tiny Tim and Katalina Magdalina. I heard him playing in his room the other day singing some of the words to a song from the CD then stopping to laugh and say, "That's funny!" The songs are delightful and full of cute lyrics kids love. The Grouch song Patricia Foster speaks negatively of is an old familiar song from Sesame Street sung by Oscar the Grouch. I remember it from my childhood days. The message in the song is don't be a grouch. My 3 year old thought it was silly and I used the song as a teachable moment. Life is full of those moments, use them!』

I think a song that encourages small preschool children to chase kittens (if they think they are grouches) is very insensitive. I don't want children to hear this song and have them think it's okay to frighten a live animal. I have seen too much animal abuse to condone a song with a line like this, particularly since it's supposed to be an "educational" cd used with groups of children, and its main purpose is to nurture and encourage a good sense of humor! I am surprised that this line was included, since these are all original songs. It would have been much better if the line had been about a cuddly teddy bear, instead of a live animal. This album is loaded with tight keyboard improvizations and funky little riffs that are gonna keep spinning in your head. The good and bad part is, it's not very sophisticated jazz; in other words, it's not as heavy as Medeski Martin and Wood, nor as classy as Count Basie. But if you're interested in acid jazz or lounge, you'll probably really like Action Figure Party.

(Pretty good jazz-rock fusion) 『This is a fairly entertaining jazzy keyboard disc. There are two vocal songs,"Action Figure Party"and"Clock Radio"which aren't that good (maybe I'm dense and not understanding the lyrical meaning, or maybe the words are awfully banal). The rest of the album is instrumental, and Greg Kurstin plays a variety of piano and keyboard sounds. He's an excellent player. The songs are fairly straight-forward, so they're accessible, if a bit light.』 『Keyboardist Greg Kurstin is best known as a founder of the eclectic rock combo Geggy Tah. With Action Figure Party, Kurstin steps out of character to create what could be described as an interesting collision between the Beastie Boys' groovier work and Steely Dan's sophisticated mix of jazz and pop. Kurstin's percolating electric keyboard work kicks out catchy melody after catchy melody, and he also takes a vocal turn on a couple of tracks. Kurstin hasn't forgotten his friends, and here he's supported by a crew that reads more like the A-list at the Viper Room than a list of sidemen for a groovy jazz album (Flea appears, as does Sean Lennon--on turntables no less). But even with his revolving crew, Kurstin keeps the music fun and focused--the songs have a taut pop polish and memorable melodies that truly hold up under repeated listens. New findings are very convincing and shows that there is more learn than what just one test show. A highly recommended show for both believers and those with an open mind. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (A Bigger-Than-Life Hero To Millions Of People) 『I've seen this promoted many times as a movie for Jewish people because it is about their first big baseball idol, Hank Greenberg. A lot of the material here deals with how big an idol Hank was to all the Jews in Amercia back then. I found that interesting, but I watched it simply because I love baseball, especially the "old days" and am thrilled to see footage of any Major League baseball games and stars from the first half of the 20th century. If there is a human-interest behind the diamond heroics, all the better!
Greenberg was a likable guy and I enjoyed seeing him talk here and there from an interview he did in the early '80s, talking about his career. He isn't a braggart, but he's not that modest, either. He knew he was very good.
He didn't make excuses either when he didn't accomplish he wanted, like hitting 60 homers one season. Sadly, some of the commentators on this DVD like attorney Alan Dershowitz are not so unbiased.
I enjoyed not only seeing Greenberg smash the ball but witnessing some of his famous and not-so-famous teammates in footage, too, and also interviewed in their older age - guys like Charlie Gehringer, a great second baseman on Hank's winning teams in Detroit.
I especially liked what Greenberg said near the end of this long documentary, something I wish more athletes of today would say (and believe): "I"ve tried to pattern my life on the fact that I'm out there in the limelight, so to speak, and that there are a lot of kids out there. If I set a good example for them, maybe it will, in some way, affect their lives."

And the more I read about Hank Greenberg, and after watching this movie, I have to say, that Hank Greenberg belongs right up there with the Joe D, Babe Ruth, and the Iron Man #4. I could watch this movie over and over. Thank You Hank.』
(Greenberg, #5, 1st baseman, Detroit Tigers) 『The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg may be the best baseball documentary ever. Not as thorough, long or epic as ken Burns' Baseball from 1994, L&T of H.G. is a wonderful vision of a player who's legacy is fast fading from the era still associated with DiMaggio, Gehrig and Ruth. His ascension to baseball immortality is partly due to his being the first great Jewish ball player. Besides Sandy Koufax, Greenberg can easily be considered the greatest Jewish player ever. He was the winner of two MVP's and two Championships with the Tigers in 1935 and 1945. Greenberg lead the Tigers to their first series appearance in 25 years in 1934, which they lost to St. Louis. He also lead them to a series in 1940, losing to Cincinnati. He served in WWII for three years and returned in 1945 to hit a home run in his first game, and lead the Tigers to a World Series victory. As it goes, his Tigers beat the Cubs in both of his Worls Series victories. According to the doc, Greenberg was one of the first ballplayers to enlist and consequently return from the war. What works about the film is the relaxed nature of Greenberg, seen in archived interviews (he died in 1986 at 75) and the interviews with fellow players and people who grew up idolizing him. Greenberg seems to have taken his success in amazing stride, assuming a responsibility he may or may not have wanted for Jewish Americans. No doubt his success as a player, like Jackie Robinson, who came into the league during Greenberg's last year, provided cushion for the horrors both experienced from fans and fellow players alike. Edited with these interviews is excellent footage of games and newsreels, which together illuminate the times and by extension Greenberg's impact. The film concludes with information on Greenberg's post career, including an ownership and management interest in the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox. His time with the Indians saw the largest accumulation of black players yet in MLB history, a championship (their last as of June 2008) in 1948 and a pennant in 1954. This will play terrifically in a school for kids from elementary through high school, as part of history, sports and cultural studies. Highly recommended.』
(A solid homage to a trailblazing ballplayer) 『This film doesn't back even a quarter inch from being a documentary of a great Jewish ballplayer. The opening theme song is "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" in Yiddish. It sets the tone for the whole film in perfect fashion.
One of my professors in grad school explained to me how he changed his name as a grad student in the 1930s in order to "pass" as what we would now call WASP in order to escape the "Jew quotas" placed against the hiring of too many Jewish professors. Today we forget just how anti-Semitic much of the United States was before World War II and beyond. As this documentary points out, this was especially true in Detroit, where America's premiere industrial anti-Semite, Henry Ford, held sway. The film mentions but does not expand upon Ford's anti-Semitic activity, which included paying for the printing and distribution of the wretched forgery "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," one of the most racist rags ever penned. This provides the social and historical background for this marvelous documentary history of the great Hank Greenberg, the first professional baseball star to openly embrace his ethnic background. He thus served as the Jackie Robinson of the Jews in the thirties. But there was a slight difference. Though African-Americans were discriminated against and subjugated to terrible racial injustice, there was a sense in which they were undeniably American. Jews, however, at the time enjoyed an almost outsider status, not really Americans, more in the nature of displaced Europeans. Greenberg, however, was not just a Jewish sports star, but a star in the great American game of baseball. His Jewish identity is central to the film, from the recounting of his earlier years to the shocking film footage of Nazi rallies in New York in the late 1930s to Greenberg's being drafted (and reenlisted) for military service in World War II. And as commentator Alan Dershowitz points out, he was the anti-thesis of what Hitler said it was possible for a Jew to be. He was the living proof of the lies of Hitler.
One of the many jokes in AIRPLANE! is when someone asks for some light reading, and is given a slender pamphlet entitled GREAT JEWISH SPORTS STARS. Greenberg is one of the great athletes to give the lie to such a conception. He would reign as the great Jewish baseball player until the emergence of Sandy Koufax twenty years later. What is striking about both players is that they were both handsome, eloquent, and great gentlemen. Both men were great heroes to Jews across America, but interestingly neither was especially religious.
As a baseball fan, I really enjoyed a lot of the baseball lore that comes through in the film. For instance, I knew that Greenberg and Gehringer were a great twosome in the infield, but I was unaware that one season the infield knocked in more runs than any infield in baseball history. Or that a new and controversial glove that the poor fielding Greenberg debuted one season would be finally approved by the league and eventually lead to the modern first baseman's glove. Or that Greenberg was the first $100,000 player. Most of all, perhaps, is all the great game footage. Most baseball fans know Greenberg by sight in a photo, but few of us would recognize him from the way he swings his bat. But now perhaps I would. There is also the fantastic segment in which Greenberg in film from the 1980s explains how the Tigers were able in late 1940 to steal the signs of the other team by placing a minor league coach in the stands with binoculars, and signaling by which hand he held them what pitch was coming.
Although in many ways Greenberg enjoyed a relatively short career, shortened by injuries and by military service in what would be the peak years for most power hitters (the peak for most home run hitters comes between the ages of 30 and 35, the very years Greenberg was in the military), he enjoyed by any standard a remarkable career. Because of the war years he lost any chance at 500 career homers, but he led the Tigers to several remarkable seasons, with four pennant winners and two world championships, all to go with his two MVP awards.
A bit of trivia partially revealed in the film. In the 1935 World Series umpire George Moriarty stopped the game to order the Cubs to stop making anti-Semitic remarks directed at Greenberg. The film then briefly interviews actor Michael Moriarty, the umpire's grandson, who himself starred in one of the great baseball films ever made, BANG THE DRUM SLOWLY, starring Moriarty and a very, very young Robert DeNiro.』
(An exceptional documentary) 『I think this is a truly exceptional documentary on many different levels. First, it tells the story of one of the best baseball players in history, who often goes unrecognized for his skills. I consider myself a big baseball fan, especially in the history of baseball and stars of the past. Yet before this movie, I knew very little about Hank Greenberg. Despite being one of the best hitters at that time, Greenberg isn't talked about very often. This DVD gets his story out, and shows how dominant of a ball player he was.
A major reason that Greenberg is often overlooked when people talk about great ball players is that he spent many of his prime years serving the war effort and was away from baseball. This has kept his lifetime stats and therefore his notoriety down.
Another major reason this movie was so good was how it showed Greenberg's career in baseball as a Jewish baseball player. Although his abuse was less than what Jackie Robinson would later recieve, he still did suffer abuse. Also, he was watched and revered by the Jewish community. He was respected and admired as a Jewish man who was just as good as other American ball players, giving Jews a sense of pride. One of the best parts of the film is when the viewer learns that Greenberg talked to Jackie Robinson about playing in baseball as a minority, and gave him support.
Whether he was helping Detroit win the World Series, serving his country in the war, being a symbol of pride for the Jewish population, or giving Jackie Robinson advice, we can see that he meant a lot to a lot of people. This is a remarkable story about a remarkable man, through the lens of baseball. If you like baseball and baseball history, this movie is a must-see.』

(At first I hated the toy but now I love it!) 『My son gets bored easily but I am surprised he still plays with this toy over and over. At first my opinion of it wasn't good. He looked at the complicated models that came in the pamphlet and became frustrated and wanted me to make them. I tried for a few seconds and couldn't do it and gave up (okay I didn't try that hard but I was trying to watch a movie!). My husband was more patient and built a few of the models. It took him some time as you have to study the pictures closely to figure out how to do it. For a while this toy was annoying for us "mommy, daddy make this one----please! Well after the pamphlets were misplaced and after laying down the law that if he can't play without getting frustrated we would put the toy away he began to explore on his own. Then magic happened--he began making all sorts of self-invented vehicles. Now he plays for extended periods of time and proudly shows me his creations. (A feast on the eyes alone) 『This book is absolutely fabulous, period. If you want to expand your drawing skills, learn to work magic with watercolor, or are simply a fan of Stephanie Law's work; you need this book. I actually bought 2 copies, one to drool over and one to keep in case it falls apart (got one off the artists website, she'll sign it for you!) This book basically has 4 sections. The first is an intro to drawing, watercolors, and inspiration sources. The second is the faerie section. Here we learn about making foliage, the 'glow effect', will-o-wisps, wings, and a few other tasty tidbits. She also introduces the notion of composition in a painting to keep the painting interesting. The third section is the mermaid one (my favorite because I'm a mermaid freak ;) and this section focuses on painting and drawing hair, pearls, cabchon jewels, and fun variations on fins. The final section is the angel one and here we see the ideas behind clothing, feathered wings, skin tones,marble effects, and the awesome stained glass effect. All three themed sections have notes on positioning the figures and their repective background elements. Also in each section, the artist introduces with a sampling of sketches (which I found quite charming throughout the book) then goes on to step by step instructions on several progressively larger paintings. She details each color she uses and her brush types and she photographs each step. She couldn't walk you through any better if she were holding your hand. An asset for budding artists and a fun 'behind the scenes' look for Law fans. Even if you don't plan to use it, its positively drool worthy to flip through.』

(The Best Slimer Figure Out There! Let Him Haunt Your House Too!) 『NECA have done a great job with their recreation of Slimer. The only downside is the packaging however this is a problem with all of NECA's action figures. The packaging does look spectacular and Slimer displays a lot better if left inside it than do most other horror figures (see my customer images for photos of him in the packaging). However the downside of the packaging as with most NECA figures is that you can't get Slimer out without totally destroying it.
In fact I have chosen to keep mine in the packaging as he's a ghost who floats in the air in real life (well movie life) so I think he displays just as well inside the packaging. Plus all the accessories (turkey, pie, apple, bottle of wine, French stick, watermelon, ham roll on plate and trail of slime) are also clearly displayed. Plus you have the even larger movie image of Slimer and the Ghostbusters logo in words down the left side which enhances the display. Plus the little sticker with his name and movie photo (he looks so happy in the photo) in green dripping slime letters adds to his display even further.
I really think NECA should work on the design of their packaging so you can get their figures out and play with them, display them outside the packaging and then put them back inside if you want to put on display inside the packaging. If this is the sort of thing you want to do you'll probably want to buy most of your horror action figures under the Sideshow brand. As far as I know though Sideshow don't have a Slimer.
Slimer also glows in the dark however he does not do this if remaining inside the package. The actual figure itself is well detailed and painted with his rolls of slime fat looking quite realistic. His teeth, tongue and entire mouth look absolutely sensational. Plus, his trail of slime stand works extremely well, and doesn't come across as a noticeable stand, like happens with a lot of other creatures/characters. The accessories also are well detailed and look very realistic (for miniature versions).
The back of the packaging (see my customer images) is also quite well done. It outlines the other NECA series 1 Ghostbusters figures (ie Stay Puft, Gozer, Zuul and Vinz Clortho (Terror dogs) from the movie). Incidentally these are all pretty hard to come across so if you do, and want one I wouldn't waste much time as they'll be quickly snapped up by whoever's selling them. Also on the back panel of the packaging are a few short paragraphs about Slimer's haunting action at the Sedgewick Hotel.
The packaging if remained intact is very sturdy and likely to keep Slimer protected for a very long time. Since the packaging is completely sealed in plastic you can even get it wet if you want to wash the old dust off. Other than allowing the owner to be able to open the packet the other area of let down is the ties. They are all silver metal so you can see where Slimer (and the stand) are tied down.
This Slimer figure is sensational! Even though he has to live in his packaging, out of all the horror figures I own he is easily my favourite. I just hope in the future NECA or someone brings out the Library Lady ghost figure (maybe it could have a detachable head where you could switch between human old lady look and scary skull with sticking out hair).

(He Slimed Me!) 『This is a most have for any fan of the movie. Slimer is complete with an asortment of foods and a slime stand. Also, from a money making stand point, the price is cheap compared to most sellers and the value will rise for the movie can stand the test of time. Buy it now!』
(An ugly little spud....) 『This is the only figure I bought in the Ghostbusters line, but from the looks of it this seems to be the best one. The sculpting on Slimer is very detailed, especially the "fat rolls" all over his body. His tongue and teeth are well textured, but there's a mold line running across his bottom teeth. I just now noticed it after owning the figure for quite a while, so it's not a huge deal.
The paint on the figure is well done. Even Slimer's nails look perfectly painted. His eyes are spot on as well, which is one of the most important things to me in a figure. Though he has beady eyes, so I would have been very surprised if they messed that up. The only thing wrong with the paint job has to do with the glow in the dark feature. They forgot to put glow in the dark paint on one of his arms (though not the hand), which is pretty annoying. I'm sure this isn't the case with all of the Slimer figures though. Watch out for non-shiny parts on Slimer if you can, because they're lacking the glow paint Though the glowing feature doesn't work extremely well anyway. It takes a lot of light to power Slimer up.
Slimer comes with a lot of food items and a really inventive slime stand. It appear as if he's coming out of the ground. Or table, or whatever you have him on. My favorite two accessories are the turkey and the bottle of wine. The legs come off of the turkey so Slimer can hold them. Unfortunately the label on my wine bottle isn't staying on too well, though I imagine glue would fix it. The rest of his food are all nicely sculpted as well.
