He somehow has managed to be completely modern while never letting go of his essential Frenchness. His music as a result is both controlled and sensual. This CD covers several decades of his career, beginning with early pieces that are quite Ravelian (plus a nifty hommage to Bach) and moving on to something else entirely. Anne Queffelec is a fabulous pianist. She remains in control, never giving in to the temptation to wallow in the harmonic beauty of these pieces. Her touch is crisp and sensitive to voicing.
This CD has come in and out of availability. Grab it while you can.』

The skiing footage is insane, but how much heli footage can you take? That's why they break it up with Saucer Boy and all of the innovative ways they incorporated the sponsors. How can you expect a serious movie about McConkey if you know anything about him?
I've watched this dozens of times, and still am amazed at the skiing, and still laugh my ass off every time.』

There is also a cool BASE jump in Canada at midnight with Olympic god Jonny Mosely as the get-away driver... Although most of the music in this is from Surfdog Records, it isn't all bad. And there's nothing funnier than watching a white [guy] try to break dance.』

This has about 25% ski footage, 25% base jumping, and about 50% stupid skits.』 『Extreme skier Shane McConkey is the protagonist of this affably oddball documentary that features some suitably spectacular footage of McConkey casually doing what most skiers can only fantasize about. There are interviews with McConkey, who comes off as the laidback dude one might expect, as well as interviews with his mother and a few friends (one of whom tells a funny story proving that "there's something wrong with McConkey"). And a few comic interludes, including McConkey's attempt to star in a music video, pop up. But the real point to this production is the skiing footage, which is uniformly spectacular. McConkey and others (including Olympic champion Jonny Moseley) go rocketing down absurdly steep mountainsides in footage shot from helicopters, and of course they make it all seem so effortless that you can almost forget how insanely dangerous it is. And speaking of bodily peril, McConkey is also seen flying off ski jumping ramps backwards and gleefully sailing through space. As someone quips, "his radness can't be quantified." Keeping with the athlete-as-outlaw theme, there are also segments on BASE jumping, in which McConkey and others are seen parachuting from bridges, tall buildings, and mountainsides. (Not for motorcyclists only!) 『In a golden age of motorcycling, it's a shame Hollywood continues to put out so much motorcycle garbage (Torque, Biker Boyz, etc) when the life of Joey Dunlop would make such a great movie, appealing to those who aren't motorcyclists or racing fans (Kudos to Ulster TV for producing this great documentary).
There is so much to enjoy on this DVD: the slow-motion ballet of a great road racer, beautiful scenery, soul-stirring music, the "scary fast" sound and speed of big bore sport bikes (and the smaller 2-strokes) on bumpy, twisty, hilly public roads that have been given over so that true roadracers can ply their craft. Don't be surprised if you find yourself cheering Joey on when the odds seem against him!
A truly reverent look at the life and accomplishments of an eminently likeable individual with a never say die attitude, who continued to confound opponents with his ability to win a young man's game at his age!』
(An entertaining retrospective of a great racer.) 『I really enjoyed this video. It's got racing and interview footage throughout Joey's 30 year career. A fair bit is from the last few years, but it's the early stuff that's magic.
Joey's funeral in Ballymoney is very touching, and I didn't realize just how hugely he was loved in his home Ireland.

(Could've been alot better) 『First off my son and I love Kong. We've collected all the new toys, played the Xbox game to death, Kong's death that is, and watched the movies and new cartoons to the point that my wife is ready for the loony bin. That said I feel this DVD was a lost opportunity. The shows themselves are wonderful and Tom of T.H.U.M.B. while not that funny is an amusing little show to watch between episodes of Kong. The problem is there appears to be no order. The pilot show is the last one on the disk and the editing is horrible. I just wish more time and effort would be put into DVDs such as these even if it means spending a little more money.

The Tom episodes did very little for me. However [I was a 9 1/2 oz Weakling Till One Day...] was a bit charming and a little moving. Plus the first half of the KING KONG pilot episode. If memory serves correctly. This show vanished from television slightly before GIGANTOR.These were my two favorite cartoons when I was 5-7 years old. I was devastated when these great,exciting, adventurous cartoons were removed from my life. Thank God for DVDs and Film Vaults. Both shows had boys voiced by females named Billie. Billie Lou Watt for Jimmy Sparks (GIGANTOR) and Billie Mae Richards for Bobby Bond (KING KONG) Both boys wore shorts. Both boys were in charge of controlling their giant entities as a power of ultimate good. Both shows were animated in Japan.But not at the same studio. Both shows were made in the 60s,the opus era of television entertainment. Here are a few differences King Kong was shot in color. Gigantor although made in color was shot in Black and White. King Kong would only listen to Bobby. Gigantor would respond to who ever had his control box.(Which seldom happened) The live action movie King Kong Escapes was based on this cartoon. Gigantor was based on a live action movie made in the 50s. I don't remember the title but I've seen pictures on the internet many years ago plus a copy of the vhs at a comic book store,that I regret not buying』

They are thicker than some she has tried which keep her legs warm and they hold up much longer than many. We have tried other Mondor tights that have consistently had runs in them after the first wearing !
The tights connect under the skating boot with velcro so you do have to be careful about snagging the tights when they are not being worn. It is a good idea to velcro them together rather than having the velcro tabs inconnected since that's when they will attach themselves to the tight and snag.
The over-the-boot vs. inside the boot style is personal preference, but the over-the-boot keeps the boots from getting so scratched up and it makes the girls leg look longer which is very flattering on the ice.

I respect how much work they put in to making it a realistic game based on the real experience of demolition derbies and figure 8 races. I recommend this to anyone who would enjoy a more realistic (and perhaps a little outdated) experience. 』

I always have them sharpened when I first receive them and then again every 2 months or so. I have been advised to move her up to the Riedell 12 when this recent pair gets too small. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Not a very good design) 『I'm an H or I cup size, while nursing, so choices for nursing bras are limited. I ordered a couple of different kinds, to try them out. I don't recommend this one, it's not a very good design. It's ok at first, it's fairly comfortable, but it has a major design flaw. Instead of each cup having a separate flap, the whole front is one big flap, and the only places it's attached are at the bottom, underneath, and on the two little hooks that hold the flap up. That means that basically all the weight of the breasts is on those two little clips, not very good when you're talking about breasts that large. My clips kept popping open, and eventually one of them broke. Plus one of the seams started to separate, because there was so much pressure on it, due to the bad design.
I would avoid this bra and get a 94305 White Fancee Free Extra Support Nursing Bra instead. It is a much better designed product.』

Live long enough....anyhow I ended up trying on a lot of bras and selecting a few different styles of Wacoal. Several months later all are ok but this style 65547 is by far the most comfortable. It is true I have to fasten it in front, then turn it, but then that's true for any back-closing bra I've ever owned. Comfortable and absolutely perfect fit. Coming online to buy more.』

Then one day a letter came from a friend that would change his life forever. In 1831 he boarded the naval ship Beagle and would embark on a trip that would change his life and would forever alter the way the world thought about evolution.
This type of simple biography makes it easier for the reluctant student to learn about a subject as the marvelous visual imagery can be a great help. The book was adventurous and fun. It makes the somewhat distant character, Charles Darwin, come alive for the reader. Obviously this book is not for the creationist, but would make a lovely addition to the home or classroom.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (The Cosmic Genie?) 『This book commits two major flaws. The first is to take a verse out of context and run with it into a way to live your life. This passage is an example of a faithful man who earnestly sought God. When this is set against the history of Israel and Judah he certainly stands out. However, I don't think God put his story in Scripture so that we would build our lives around it.
The second is that it contains bad theology. The implication is that if we just pray the right prayer God is beholden to us for His blessings. It's like God is some sort of cosmic Sphinx who has a riddle that we must unlock. Does it make sense that the gracious God of Scripture is withholding blessings until we can discern the meaning of this little passage tucked away in a long list of genealogy? Is this His little trick to get us to read Chronicles more carefully? Perhaps there are more little prayers like this hidden away that we have to find?
Clearly this is absurd. We live on this side of the cross and have more blessings that we can possibly imagine in Christ. Repent and believe in Christ. That is how we break through to the blessed life, though not necessarily by our standards.』
(Sounds frightening) 『I admit that I have read only a summary of this book, but the basic idea is frightening. The ever increasing consumption is going to lead us to ruins. Greed and ever accumulating riches is not what Jesus taught. He had numerous harsh sayings about behavior of rich people. People do not happier when they get rich. They worry their money and want it more.
I hope I have mistaken the message of this book. My understanding the Sermon of Mount and other major passages of New Testament points to a opposite direction: the true followers of Jesus will often suffer and be poor. But then they hopefully understand the suffering of others.
Let this review be a warning about the dangers of mammona. I hope the book gives this warning, too.』

First of all, he omits critical punctuation from the poem, which can seriously alter your understanding of what is going on:
"[God} made the stars/ And set them in the firmament of heav'n/ T'illuminate the earth and rule the day/ In their vicissitude and rule the night/ And light from darkness to divide." (VII. 348-52)
This is clumsy editing, and cross referencing other editions will show that the comma between "the night" and "and light" is retained; without it, the sentence makes little sense.
This is only one example of the gross injustices done to Milton's poem: parentheses where parentheses do not belong, misspellings, unnecessary footnotes (literally half of the footnotes you will find merely tell you that two words are elided), and omissions of information that could be helpful. It seems as if Tesky delights in telling you things you either already know or can infer from the context. Tesky's modernization of Paradise Lost is awkward and ill-managed, insulting to the unfamiliar student, and to the memory of Milton.
Tesky does, however, include a glossary of biblical and mythological terms which may be unfamiliar to many (but which were much more recognizable to Milton's contemporaries), and this is hardly found in many editions of Paradise Lost. Tesky also gives critical articles on subjects as diverse as the character of Satan, gender distinctions, and even the agency of the angel Abdiel. While there is alot to learn from this edition, scarcely any of it comes from Tesky himself; he ends up doing more damage than good. In my opinion, stay away from this edition.』
(With a name like Milton it has got to be good.) 『This is perhaps the highest achievement of the English language, so despite an editor's best efforts, it is extremely hard to improve upon. Because Milton was essentially a self contained encyclopedia, the footnotes (which are detailed but not verbose) are very helpful in explaining some of the more obscure references included in the text. My only gripes are that in certain areas (as the editor wholly admits) the syntax has been changed, slightly altering the mood and at times the message I believe Milton had in mind. Also, the in-depth information regarding the names of characters and places that was included as footnotes in the second edition has been moved to a glossary in the third edition, making reference a little more difficult. All together an excellent text however, and one that makes enjoying Milton's genius that much easier.』
(New edition (by Teskey) omits material found in older edition (by Elledge)) 『I am not a Milton scholar and my comments need to be understood in that light.
Having read the previous Norton Critical Edition (edited by Scott Elledge, (C) 1993; Paradise Lost (Norton Critical Editions)) several years ago, I was looking forward to reading this new one (edited by Gordon Teskey). The new edition is printed on heavier paper, which is nicer to read and less prone to bleed through when I write on it. But to maintain the same size and heft, the newer edition is about 100 pages shorter (587 vs 685). Almost all the critical essays are carried over from one edition to the next. But omitted material includes:
A number of Milton's other writings, including 7 sonnets and excerpts from a number of his essays.
An essay about the religious and political issues at the time of Milton
A brief biography of Milton
Explanations of Milton's conceptions about the universe, Physiology and Psychology, Reason, the Scale of Nature, Angels, God, Freedom, etc.
A more complete set of relevant readings from the Bible (the new one omits the readings from Matthew, Luke, John, Timothy, and James).
I found these materials enormously helpful in understanding Milton and Norton's decision to delete them makes the new edition much less useful. I would have preferred, personally, that they delete some of the critical essays about PL, rather than the explanatory materials to help readers get through the book in the first place.
Finally, Teskey's notes are not nearly as helpful. About half of them discuss how the syllables of Milton's words should be counted. Here's a comparison of the notes to book one, lines 43-46, in each edition. From Teskey, page 5:
44: Pow'r: power, pronounced with one syllable: 'paar.' 45: ethereal: has three syllables: 'eth-ear-yal.' 46: hideous has two syllables: 'hid-jus.'
and so forth. Some of his notes explain odd words, ideas, or allusions to biblical or classical texts. I am certain that his emphasis on explaining Milton's syllabification is important to some readers, but it matters little to me.
By comparison, Elledge's notes almost never discuss syllabification. They are full of information explaining the text. From the same set of lines (p. 9):
43: Impious. The L word means disrespectful of one's parents or one's country as well as of one's god. 44: ethereal: (Gk aithein to ignite, blaze) of the ether, the element supposed to fill the outer regions of the universe; not earth, fire or water, it was not earthly but heavenly, and eternal. 46: This image of a meteorite is more distinct in the description of Satan's fall at 745 ("like a falling star"). hideous: causing dread or horror. ruin (L ruere to fall violently) ruins, rubble; fall destruction. combustion. Cf Combustible. line 233.
Elledge's notes are fuller, richer, and far more helpful to me. Knowing what "etheral" means and how it fits into Milton's cosmology is far more interesting and helpful than knowing that he pronounced it with three syllables.
In short, I would encourage folks to look for a copy of Elledge's version of this Norton's Critical edition. I found it far more helpful than Teskey.
Perhaps when Norton issues a second edition of Tewsky's work, they will restore some of the missing material; until they do, I will continue to use Elledge.』

Each line serves a purpose, so in order to inhale this sublime poem to its fullest it will be necessary to slow down. Immensely valuable to understanding this difficult poem is the editor's explanatory summery going into each of the twelve books (chapters) and the numerous footnotes.
The second half of the book contains a biography, an historical evolution, other writings, and a critical analysis of Milton by multiple revered authors with a wide degree of beliefs.

(Worse than the old Norton--no longer the edition of choice) 『People I admire have told me they consider Teskey a brilliant scholar, but what he has done with this Norton Critical Edition is a real disappointment. In short, the annotations, the ancillary texts, and the critical readings are all less helpful than the old Norton edition (edited by Scott Elledge). Elledge sometimes could be a bit pedantic, giving too many Latin etymologies and such. But Teskey has simply abandoned the original audience (first-time readers of Paradise Lost). He doesn't gloss such difficulties as "ravin," "all I," and the odd etymological use of "pontifical." He omits such indispensable ancillae as Elledge's 33-page selection from Milton's "On Christian Doctrine" (and also Doctrine&Discipline of Divorce, and much else). He takes the best critical readings (Lewalski, Fish) and cuts them down to excerpts too tiny to matter much.
That really concludes my argument against choosing Teskey. He also commits howlers in Latin, Greek ("Greek leukos also means joyful"), and English ("tradition" in X.578 construed as a verb; faulty modernizations like "condemn" for "contemn" in IX.306 and "shown" for "shone" in X.1096).
For a Norton Critical Edition (i.e., the extra primary and secondary texts), choose Elledge; its advantages in learning and help far outweigh any of its defects. Perhaps, though, the most helpful Paradise Lost edition for the target audience (first-time reader, well-annotated) is now David Scott Kastan's generous reworking of Merritt Hughes' edition.』 『This Norton Critical Edition is designed to makeParadise Lostaccessible for student readers, providing invaluable contextual and biographical information and the tools students need to think critically about this landmark epic.
