Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review ("You Gotta Come Out For Every Round.") 『Forget about the first half-hour of this film. It's fairly standard Ali-Frazier pre-fight hype. The value of this film is that it shows us the first Ali-Frazier fight in its entirety. No announcers, no interruptions.
And it was a *great* fight. Homeric in its impact.
Muhammed Ali fought some really tough, brutal, vicious fighters - Sonny Liston, Ernie Shavers, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Ken Norton. As such, it must have occurred to him before he fought these guys that he might not just lose the fight but that these guys might very well beat him to death in the ring -- that's how powerful they were as punchers!
In his book, "The Fight," Norman Mailer points out that in order to get to his side of the hotel lobby to train in Zaire, Ali had to pass by where George Foreman was training, and as Ali passed by, Foreman made it a point at that moment to be wailing away on the heavy bag. THWAP! THWAP! THWAP! ... Solely for Ali's benefit. ... Just to put the frightening thought of those monsterous puncher in Ali's head.
Getting back to Joe Frazier ... Interestingly enough, Joe Frazier was not physically bigger than Ali. In this 1971 fight, Ali was 10 pounds heavier than Frazier; taller; more muscular; had a noticeably longer reach; and was a far better boxer than Frazier.
But Joe Frazier was a wild man. He never backed up.
You could see in Ali's eyes along about the third round what he was probably saying to himself: "This guy is crazy! I'm hitting him with everything I've got and he still keeps coming!" In whatever round that thought came to Ali, and it most certainly did plant itself in Ali's mind, it was at that point that Ali lost the fight.
In a street fight, with the gloves off and anything-goes, Ali must have realized that Frazier could indeed have beaten him to death. But in the ring -- and outside the ring -- Frazier knew that Ali was in charge. He might defeat Ali, which he did in this fight, but Ali even in defeat commanded the ring.
After the fight, Ali, while bruised, was able to face the press in the days immediately following the fight, while Frazier was laid up in the hospital for several days, some say with serious injuries.
In my opinion, Ali made two major mistakes in the fight. One, he tried the "Rope-a-Dope" on Frazier; a strategy that proved to be George Foreman's undoing in 1974, but Joe Frazier is no George Foreman. Where Ali *fired* off the ropes in Zaire once Foreman punched himself out, Frazier just kept punching and punching and punching while Ali lay on the ropes: to where Ali had nothing coming off the ropes in the way of a blitz against Frazier.
The other mistake Ali made was that after the first couple rounds Ali fought flat-footed for the rest of the fight. Clearly the better boxer, Ali chose to slug it out with Frazier. Big mistake.
Had Ali fought Frazier the way Sugar Ray Leonard defeated Marvin Hagler, Ali would have won at least 2 or 3 additional rounds simply by virtue of outboxing and outclassing Frazier.
I wonder if Ali's decision to slug it out with Frazier came as a surprise to Angelo Dundee. Despite his respect for Dundee, Ali would often "chart his own course" in the ring, the advice of ringside-seconds notwithstanding.
All during the fight Frazier kept hitting Ali with left hooks; left hooks that Frazier delivered as if throwing a discus. Finally, in the 15th round Frazier tagged Ali with an absolutely gorgeous left hook, a wallop that may go down in boxing history as the most perfect punch thrown in a heavyweight fight. Frazier didn't just knock Ali down with that punch, he entered his psyche!
Almost immediately after Ali fell to the floor, he rose to his feet. It was at that moment that "Ali the Legend" was born. The way he stood there in the corner taking an eight-count showed the world that Muhammed Ali was for real. His demeanor during and after the fight were that of a true sportsman. He never complained about the fight, never offered any excuses.
It's interesting that this fight took place in March of 1971, six years after Ali announced that he no longer wanted to be called Cassius Clay -- and yet there are people in the documentary section of the film, including the obnoxious, know-nothing, ever-present Jim Jacobs, who continued to call him "Clay." Six years later. Think about that.
There's also the issue of the scoring by the judges. One judge scored it 11-4 Frazier. Preposterous! Then again, Ali knew he had to win the fight by a knockout, no old school boxing judges were going to give a black militant war resister any kind of a break in 1971 -- believe it!
You can see Ali at the beginning of the 15th trying valiantly to do just that, knock out Frazier. But it was impossible. Joe was too young, too strong, too tough and too crazy to go down. It wasn't going to happen. And Ali knew it. Still, Ali finished the round: itself an act of pure, unadulterated courage.
No doubt Ali figured out Frazier for their second fight, "The Thriller in Manila." I think he realized that a Joe Frazier older by four years *would* tire at some point in the fight -- although Ali up to the 15th round must have wondered "WHEN?!!!"
There was one great moment in the 1975 Manila fight when Angelo Dundee looks over at Frazier's corner between the 14th and the 15th rounds and sees, before anyone else in Ali's corner, that Frazier is giving up, that he's not going to answer the bell for the 15th round and that the fight is over. And Dundee turns to tell Ali what he just saw -- that he wouldn't have to go out for the 15th round -- AND MY GOD! THE LOOK ON ALI'S FACE! The hangman had spared him.
All I can say about Muhammed Ali that I know for absolutely certain is that he meant the world to me and to a great many of us who grew up in the 1960s. When Ali lost the first fight to Joe Frazier in 1971, right smack dab in the middle of the Vietnam War, sure, it was a disappointment; but his standing up and "speaking truth to power," not just to the boxing world but to the imperialists who run the military-industrial complex -- that takes a real champ; in and out of the ring. And he sure had 'em -- balls down to the ground.
And don't let no sanitized US Post Office commemorative stamp tell you anything different. The US government would have liked to have *buried* Muhammed Ali, and Malcolm X, and Langston Hughes, and a lot of others who spoke out *when* they were speaking out. Now however, years later, they print postage stamps in their honor! But be not deceived, the fates are not mocked, Muhammed Ali was a brother to millions of people the world over.
Some people say Ali should have just "stayed down" when Frazier tagged him with that Olympian left hand in the 15th round -- knocked him on his ass and, in effect, won the fight -- but Ali got right back up. ... Some people say Ali should have just plain given up when he was fighting Joe for the second time in Manila. But as Ali said after the fight: "When you're the champ, you gotta go out for every round." And indeed he did. Both as a fighter and as a citizen.
Thanks, Champ. 』
(Not one of the better Ali docs) 『The approach of this documentary is more "Don't Look Back" than "When We Were Kings". We see all the behind the scenes preparations that led up to the historic first Ali/Frazier fight. This means we get to watch Ali drive around town taking pictures with fans and joking with them in restaurants. We get to see Frazier attend church services and fend off the press who are always in his face looking for a soundbite. Unfortunately the greedy fight promoters get a fair amount of screen time. At one press conference a reporter asks the promoter how he responds to fan backlash over the high price of tickets. The promoter maintains that the prices must be that high otherwise the profit would be twenty five cents. He goes further by wishing for a perfect world in which everyone could afford ticket prices, everyone was employed, and that children would stop being born crippled. His conscience seems to have calmed down by fight night though since we get a scene of him holding a cocktail party with his other obnoxious, rich friends. The highlights of the documentary occur when Ali is delivering speeches at a college and in the ring at his training camp. He jokes with the crowd in front of him that they will be first to hear his fight predictions before the press who are snapping away with cameras behind him. The best line in the film is when Ali tells his fans that this fight is the only official way that someone can take his title from him. "In the ring." he says referencing his being stripped of the title for refusing to be drafted in the Vietnam war. The exhausting fifteen round fight is shown in it's entirety. The film is only an hour and a half and the last hour is dedicated to the fight. It's fun to see celebs like Frank Sinatra, Howard Cosell, and Woody Allen settle into their ringside seats. Since there is only a half hour of time leading up to the fight the previously mentioned promoters get most of that time leaving very little for any great Ali moments. The limited footage that there is though is fantastic and shows his unlimited charisma and natural talent as a showman. There are better Ali docs available but this is probably the most in depth one for this particular fight. On a final note : What the hell is Burt Lancaster doing here? It appears that he is a special correspondent covering the fight and he is shown talking to Ali over the phone and then interviewing Frazier in a sauna. On fight night he even gets boxing lessons from one of the announcers.』
(Fight of the Century) 『I knew of this fight from the constant discussions about it among my classmates during the weeks prior to the event when I was in grade school. Since that time, I've always been haunted by the mystic of this bigger-than-life event and was curious to see the whole 15 rounds. The mystic that I mention had to do with the reported intensity of this fight and the physical damage done to both fighters. My curiosity was further raised when I was in college and happened to come across a library book documentary about the first Ali-Frazier bout authored by Jose Torres, the title of which escapes me. His virtual round by round coverage of the fight itself was absolutely mesmerizing and made me want to see it all the more! Finally, in the mid 1980's, they played this documentary, which was titled as "The Fight" on TV, and apparently it's the same documentary as "Ali The Fighter". You can bet I had my VCR set to record it! Finally, after all these years, I was about to see this very elusive event for myself. Well, all I can say, as a long-time boxing fan, is that this fight was the most fast-paced, intense, vicious boxing match that I had ever witnessed. I could not believe that two heavyweights could fight at the pace that these two great champions fought at and had sustained the punches that they received from one another! It certainly lived up to everything I've heard about it, and I've never seen any other boxing match that contained the amount of drama that this one had. The media likes to talk about the Thrilla In Manilla as a classic, but I have to differ with them on that. By the time of the Thrilla In Manilla, both fighters had lost a lot of their speed, fluidity, and dynamic fighting style, where in the first fight, they were both much faster, sharper, and more lethal. There are those that say that Ali was past his prime when he came out of his exile, but to me, anyone who could dish out and receive the kind of punishment that Ali had sustained over those 15 hellishly-paced rounds from an righteously angry, relentless killing machine such as Joe Frazier, had to be a well-conditioned fighter. Although I has never personally liked the 1960's and early 1970's Ali, I had to deeply respect this man for the courage he displayed in this fight. To see him take that murderous left-hook of Frazier in the 11th round which was hard enough to buckle his knees, and come back to fight valiantly for the remaining rounds, brought a tear to my eyes. And how he ever got up so quickly, (considering he managed to get up in the first place) from such a devastating, picture-perfect left-hook during the 15th round, I'll never know. This man, with the "pretty face", was every bit as tough as Frazier. Since I had misplaced my VHS recording of this great documentary, I'm going to put in my order for the DVD being sold on this site. 』
(The title's a bit misleading, but it's a MUST HAVE!) 『In 1971, a British company produced a documentary on the first Ali-Frazier bout simply called, "The Fighters". Inexplicably, the "s" was dropped from the title in this reissue. If you're interested in looking at the first Ali-Frazier fight at its most in-depth, then this is the ultimate video for you. If you're looking for a blanket Ali documentary, it is not. But even if you're not a boxing fan or historian, the way this film was produced will make you feel like you were really there on that fateful night - March 8, 1971.』
(A Must For Any Boxing Fan) 『This dvd would more aptly be titled Frazier-The Fighter. He is the one who truely gets the glory in this picture. In the pre fight footage, Frazier is seen as an innocent victim to Ali`s mocking and taunting, and the fight itself showcases Frazier in peak form ,defeating an Ali in or nearly in his prime. The buidup to the fight is beautiful. The tension mounts as the fighters are divided by their own political and religious ties.As for the fight itself,it is truely the "Fight Of The Century".It is a glorious fight to behold, regardless of which side you are rooting for. The picture quality could be better, but isn`t all that bad in my opinon. It looks quite good on my lcd tv,but maybe doesn`t look as well on some older televisions. The sound is good.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Volume 2 is alot better than Volume 1) 『Volume 2 is alot better than Volume 1. But...each one is based on which Super Stars are your favorite.』
(Good look at the Superstars) 『I have been a wrestling fan since 1996 and have watched all kinds of wrestling. I have a wrestling DVD/VHS collection spanning over 50 all together. This is the most complete and accurate review of this DVD you will find. I hope you find this review helpful; remember to vote helpful or not helpful. (Note-Each DVD I review has a "Match of the DVD" award somewhere in it.)
Before They Were WWF Superstars This is a very fun DVD if you liked WWE Confidential that came on in 2002-2004 or The Best of WWE Confidential, Vol. 1. You get to hear a quick history about each one of the superstars featured in this DVD. It features a lot of clips of Mexican wrestling, OMEGA wrestling, and all your big time promotions. Some of the profiles are more interesting than others, but you'll still enjoy this DVD a lot.
You'll hear about Kurt Angle's Olympic and College day in my favorite part of this disk. Stacy Keibler will tell about how she got into WCW by winning a Nitro Girl contest. Edge and Christian will tell about their long-time friendship. They even go to their original school and visit. The kids at the school are funny and are marking out for Edge and Christian. Lita tells about her days in Mexico and shows off her collection of Mexican wrestling masks. Spike Dudley's love of wrestling is told. He tells how he played Football instead of Hockey, just so he could watch wrestling in the morning. You'll hear about Molly Holly's power lifting days and how she broke records with her lifting. You'll also hear about how she became Ms. Madness in WCW. The Hardy Boyz tell about their struggles in the beginning and how their Dad would give them a rough time about wrestling. Bradshaw and Billy Gunn also speak on how they got into wrestling. William Regal talks about his days in Blackpool, England, and how he was wrestling since age 15.
Extras Include- Jaqueline VS Starla Saxton (Molly Holly)- Heat 10/11/98 Gillberg(c) VS Essa Rios w/Lita (Light heavyweight Title)- Heat 2/13/00 Bradshaw VS Undertaker- Raw 4/1/96 Rob Van Dam VS Jeff Hardy- Raw 5/12/97 Sing-Along- Raw 12/22/00 Angle/Edge/Christian VS Jericho/Dudley Boyz- Raw 12/22/00 Smoking Gunns VS 1-2-3 Kid and Bob Holly(C) (Tag Team Titles)- Raw 1/25/95 Mr. Manners- Raw 9/18/00 Hamlet- Raw 9/18/00 No Holds Beared (Bradshaw's story about fighting a bear) Ice Rules! (dont pay to much for it) 『Just picked this up at wal-mart. They had tons of them. The price? how about $3.88!! So, dont pay to much for it here. This DVD is only worth a couple of bucks!』
(Worth the Money) 『I bought this dvd off of Amazon new for like $11, worth every penny. There are some great extras on this dvd. So, if your a collector of wrestling dvd's make sure this one is in your collection.』
(Good to watch once) 『It is informative, however it is something that you watch once get a kick out of a few things, and that's it. I would have liked to see more about the beginnings of their careers and not about their barbers, eating disorders, and haloween costumes. I should have rented this and not bought it.』 『The WWE is all about spectacle and illusion, so the idea of putting out a real look at the lives of its superstars sounds, on paper, like a cheesy bore. Surprisingly,Before They Were WWE Superstarsis hardly boring; in fact, it's the best non-pay-per-view DVD the organization has ever released. The documentary details the rise of 12 midlevel names (Kurt Angle is the only huge figure profiled) and the strange, often brutal roads they took to make it as pro wrestlers. Besides Angle, William Regal, Edge and Christian, Lita, Spike Dudley, Mighty Molly, the Hardy Boyz, Bradshaw, Stacy Keibler, and Billy Gunn tell their stories (often punctuated by comments from their parents or siblings), and all are fascinating vignettes. Say what you want about pro wrestling, but the drive and determination displayed by these people is not only impressive, but uplifting.--Dave McCoy』 『GREAT CONDITION, WILL SHIP FAST!!』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (The Story of Jesus for Children) 『The Story of Jesus for Children This is an excellant dvd protraying the story of Jesus by children themselves as the actors. The story reaches out to show the real love of Christ for each of us. Wonderful teaching dvd.』
(video for older kids) 『I bought this video to use in a third grade CCD class that I teach. When I previewed it, I was impressed with the effort that was put into the production of the film. But I did not show it to my class because some of the movie was too graphic for their age group. Also, some of the language would've been difficult for them to understand. I would recommend this video for the upper grades 5-6. The children narrating the movie are about that age. I wouldn't recommend it to use with younger children.』
(Disappointed in this purchase) 『This DVD was very disappointing for several reasons. The main character (a boy) was contentious toward his father on several occasions, yet received no real correction for it and showed no sign of repentance. Several children meet up at night without any parental supervision on different occasions, and at one point two of the boys get into a brawl. I honestly could only handle watching about 30 minutes of this and had to turn it off. I would not show this DVD to my children because of the ill fruit it might produce in their character. The portrayal of Jesus and his disciples seemed much more on track with what I was looking for. Again, I did not watch the entire DVD, so it's possible that things improve with the children, but I wouldn't waste my time waiting to see.』
(Each child is different) 『I would like to have seen a greater focus on Jesus, not the children. It was a little fragmenting in the opening scenes having the children each recall bits and pieces about Jesus .... you didn't know who the main character was! There were angels speaking to Mary, a baby, a temple scene, a Baptism, etc. all within a couple of minutes....
I guess that is the problem of narrating a story through the eyes of someone else, and not letting the Scriptures speak straight to you. You have to go through the 'filter' of that character; and are forever limited to seeing things from their point of view (or how the narrator portrays them). But that is a more general point about the 'narrative'.
I think movies etc. are good but especially for the younger child, who can't read; but the younger they are the more they need a movie that simply tells the story of Jesus; and does so slowly and simply, focusing upon Jesus from start to finish...For that reason the movie that just puts the Bible into pictures (as far as possible) is to be preferred- especially for the very little ones... but I recognise each child is different
I think they will get bored if the scenes change so quickly they loose the thread, not because it takes two minutes to show the wonder of say the birth; a flash back taking 10 seconds or whatever is rushing the story. i.e. I don't think much is gained by making a short version. Children love to stop and wonder where adults pass over in familarity. It is all new to them... enjoy it, dramatise the wonder... don't rush it!
I'll be going back to the original 'Jesus' movie first!... and seeing if that better meets my expectations of a film that conveys the story of Jesus in a memorable visual way to in my case young children. The ficticious characters seemed to get in the way. 』
(A Great Introduction into Christ's life) 『I purchased the video, the "Story of Jesus for Children" for my 4 year old son. We've watched the video several times and each time, he's had more questions. It's been a great catalyst into Jesus's life and I know this video will help expand his knowledge and curiosity of Christ. I love that the story is told through children. This video has been a nice purchase for our family.』

(do not buy) 『I recently purchased three of these bras. They fit and felt wonderful, and looked great on. However, about a month later, one looked like a cat got ahold of it. The top layer began to literally shread apart in BOTH cups. Now, a second one is doing the same thing. They are even different colors so it is not a "bad batch" of material. It only got one star because there was not an option of leaving zero.』

(Great medium-sized Lego set) 『My son got this set for Christmas and, while it was only assembled very briefly, he really likes it. It includes Indy with his whip and hat as well as Mutt, which he was very excited about. Assembled, the set has a pretty neat "secret door" that is pretty fun.』
(fun for our first lego set) 『Our five-year-old kept asking for a Star Wars or Indianan Jones lego set for Christmas; we weren't going to get him one because he's five and they're ususally for 7 and up or 8 or 9. We chose this one because it's cheap and for 7 and up. He's really enjoyed it. He needs help putting it together all the way, but he enjoys just playing with the characters and their accessories.』
(Great Set, but...) 『This is a cool little Indy set, and makes a good display piece. The trap wall mechanism is cool, but the 'hideout' for the crystal skull behind the conquistador should be closed off. Could also use some more scorpions. As for play value, the boy and I could only get so much out of it, since there's not much room for an encounter with the native guards. Much shorter than the scene in the movie. We combined our's with the hideout and trees in the Jungle Cutter set, as well as a green baseplate, for a little more real estate. Don't let that disuade you, overall, if you're collecting, this one's a must.
Pros - It's Indy. Scorpions. Cool trap wall and dead conquistador. More bad guys is always a good thing.
Cons - Small amount of space to recreate the scene. I don't remember Mutt having his motorcycle there... Needs more scorpions.』 『Find the Crystal Skull...if you dare! It is durable and holds his attention. He likes to play with this set and the pirate ship together. Both my husband and I are huge fans of the Imaginext brand.』
(Happy Purchase!) 『When my three children were young, Fisher Price was one of those toys I could count on for exceptional quality and fun-filled hours of play. Years have passed and now with grandchildren I am making purchases of Fisher Price toys again. It is great to see quality, durability, and great detail go into the Fisher Price toys after 30 years. The ocean boat is a fun toy. Our 2 and 3 year old grandboys spend lots of time playing with the moveable parts...pretending as they push the boat along. We have added a couple "sold separately" pieces to the set. It's nice to see one company who is still concerned about good quality products for children.』
(Great Value) 『This was a hassle free packaging item. I got this for my son for Christmas.I was so glad that hassle free packaging was as advertised. The only downside is that it's a plain brown box. Kids love to see all the pictures when they open their gift.
The toy itself was very well built and had lots of things to play with. the wench works and so does the anchor. There is a rear storage bay with clear deck hatch. There are lots of accessories. Sea animals and equipment for the action figures.
My son had the Imaginex Pirate ship last year. Build quality on these products are excellent. Both boats have been bath tub toys for most of their lives and I have yet to notice any rusting for breakdown of any of the mechanicals on the toys.』
(Continuous fun for my 2-year old.) 『At two years old, there are few opportunities that my son is content to play by himself. I was hoping I could find a toy that would occupy his attention long enough to get some things accomplished around the house. This one did the trick...he loves it. This is not like other toys where he gets bored with it after 48 hours and rarely plays with it again. Several weeks later, he still has an interest in all of its functions. There are quite a few small pieces, but he enjoys "putting them away" in the cargo hold. He enjoyed it so much, I have purchased a similar toy by the same manufacturer for his birthday. BTW, the packaging was appreciated...minimal set up time. My only recommendation is that I wish it included more than one life ring, because my son loves to shoot it, and I afraid that piece will mysteriously disappear.』
(The boys loved it) 『We gave this to our grandson for Christmas - he and his brother loved it. His mom says they play with it all the time. The Boat seems very durable. It is colorful and looks fun.』 『The Fisher-Price Imaginext Ocean Boat is a well-crafted toy boat that will captivate junior seafarers' active imaginations. It features dozens of movable parts, including a deployable submarine, that will allow your child to explore the sea at all depths. Designed for ages 3 and up, the Ocean Boat will immerse your child in the biggest ocean of all -- their imagination.

What We Think
Fun factor: Durability: Ease of assembly: Educational factor:
The Good: Well-designed; includes dozens of accessories and interactive parts.
The Challenging: Isn't intended for water use.
In a Nutshell: An enjoyable and interactive toy for growing imaginations.
This toy boat will take your child on an imaginary high-seas adventure. View larger.
Great for Imaginative Play With its nautical blue-and-yellow paint scheme and sturdy construction, the Ocean Boat looks and feels like it was made for high-seas adventure. It comes with three Imaginext-style figures, each with their own outfit and scuba gear. The figures have rotatable arms and legs, and their hands are shaped to grasp numerous objects throughout the ship.
The ship is full of movable parts, giving the boat a realistic touch. Spin a dial on top, for instance, and the ship's doors will fling open. Rolling the ship along on a hard surface will spin the ship's propellers and satellite dishes in unison.
There is also an opening cargo hold with translucent doors, a life-saver launcher, a rotating crane for deploying the submarine, and more. The accessory submarine comes with spinning propellers and rotating arms. Unfortunately, the boat wasn't designed for water play. Although it might be tempting to take it in the pool or bathtub, it will probably capsize the moment you try to float it.
An Enjoyable and Educational Adventure The boat also comes with four deep-sea animal figures: a king crab, an eel, a cuttlefish, and an anglerfish. Kids will enjoy learning about these fascinating creatures with their parents.
Another great aspect of the Ocean Boat is its broad appeal. Suggested for three- to eight-year-olds, it is sturdy and intuitive enough for younger audiences, but nuanced and complex enough that it will still fascinate older children.

(An Art Book For Artists) 『Very well written, the text includes many well-chosen quotes from various aartists. Overall, the reading is interesting and useful for understanding and apprecaiting figure drawing. Much better than most drawing books. The included illistrations are also very well chosen.』
(Very good book!) 『This is a very good book to learn about the methods of life drawing. There are several examples in every chapter, each from very different artists. The book is laid out well and easy to follow. It has been a good addition to my life drawing class.』
(Drawing) 『I bought this book for a class I was taking and I ended up keeping it for myself once I finished the class. It is filled with information and instruction. I love this book and I very rarely keep book I buy for classes and this is one of the few I kept because I know I will use it many more times in the future. It works well for references and how to stuff.』
(Review on "Drawing from Life") 『Excellent book for anyone interested in drawing the human figure. Deals well and extensively with proportion, anatomy and nuances of figure drawing. Required by my art teacher and worth the money as an on-going reference source.』 『The leading textbook for college figure-drawing classes, DRAWING FROM LIFE provides a clear, comprehensive, and thought-provoking guide to drawing the human form for anyone interested in exploring this time-honored artistic tradition. For centuries, drawing the human figure has given artists the tools and vocabulary for creating paintings, sculpture, drawings, or printsfrom Renaissance classical to contemporary expression. In addition to working from the model, the figure-drawing student needs instruction in anatomy, history, and conceptual approaches to drawing the human form; such instruction is often missing from life drawing classes due to time constraints. DRAWING FROM LIFE offers these elements, along with a tremendous selection of drawings that represent the broad range of approaches, techniques, and media for drawing from life. The chapters follow the natural development of a student's growth, from fundamental sketching and gesture drawing to creative expression and exploration. An entire chapter on drawing the figure in perspective offers information that is not available in comparable textbooks. Students begin with quick sketches and gesture drawings, giving them a non-threatening introduction on a level they can readily understand and master. The cohesive presentation of anatomy, including a chapter on the human head, helps students understand the human structure and its impact on visible form. The final section brings the concepts, vocabulary, and history presented in the earlier chapters to bear on contemporary use of the figurein art.』

(painting people: Figure Painting Today) 『A must read for artists, collectors and art lovers! The diversity of styles is astounding!』
(One of those good and rare books on contemporary painting) 『It is so weird how someone that probably has a truly limited knowledge on contemporary painting can review a book with such a pompous complacency. If you judge the book by its cover - I am not talking about whether it is a good thing or not- you'll find that Currin's painting is quite good at representing the rest of the works inside the book when they are considered thematically. If you pursue categorizing contemporary art by considering merely its formal qualities then you'll have a hard time understanding what it's all about (probably that's why people can't find any correspondence between Currin's work and the rest). Probably that's also why this book (also as almost every other book on contemporary art) is divided into chapters on the basis of works' thematic tones. Besides all of these, a book's cover is largely designed in regard to its commercial appeal; is Currin's work "figure painting today?" yes; "is it quite sensational for being a cover?"; yes, because it is Currin.
Also a book does not have to cover the entire range of artistic production taking place in any defined period (whether it is contemporary, classic or whatever it is). So judging a book that targets such an extensive subject with reference to the absence of Steven Assael, Jeremy Lipking, Robert Liberace (whom I personally think that quite are out of the league of the artists that are presented in this edition) or anyone of your liking seems a little bit erroneous.(For instance, if it was a book on Neo-Dada I might understand someone making such a fuss if there is no Rauschenberg in it, but in this case it seems to be plain nonsense.)
Anyway; This book does not have comprehensive writings on the artists that are included but it is quite successful in assembling a wide array of contemporary painters that gets more recognition each day by juxtaposing them to already widely admired ones. There is not so many books on contemporary painting that serves as a collection of this sort which deals with artists that otherwise might be overlooked; furthermore there are not so many books that focuses on contemporary painting at all (except the ones that concentrates solely on one artist, such as Doig, Dumas, Saville.) So I dearly appreciate any initiative in publishing on this subject even if it truly (which in this case it is not as such) sucks. Strongly recommended.』
(great book) 『This book really helped me to understand the ideas behind modern figurative work-how thoughtful artists are responding to the conditions of society today.』
(Engrossing!) 『I love this book. It is informative and entertaining as well. Charlotte Mullins gives a great overview of what is happening in figurative painting today. I especially like how she divided her selections in categories such as The Figure Unravelled, The Urban Condition, and Folk Tales. It is a book suitable for anyone who loves art.In Real Life: Six Women Photographers』 『FromCHOICE:
London art historian and critic Mullins has brought together a study of contemporary artists who paint the human figure. Included are 200 color reproductions by 85 artists from around the world. Some artists, such as Lucien Freud and Chuck Close, are well known, but many are still developing their reputations. Mullins chose artists who paint people interacting with the world and, in doing so, explore themes of modern times. Her chapters are arranged by these themes: ""The Figure Unravelled,"" ""The Urban Condition,"" ""Other Worlds"" (which explores themes of romanticism), ""Folk Tales"" (the telling of unique and well-known stories), and ""Past Deconstructed"" (focusing on the use of photography by these artists). Many of the works reflect on the isolation of the people portrayed, some are disturbing, and some emphasize the newest technology that these artists employ, including the use of photography in their work. This valuable collection of modern art includes excellent bibliographies for each artist. Summing Up: Highly recommended. General readers; lower-division undergraduates through professionals. -- N. M. Lambert, University of South Carolina Upstate"』

Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (An excellently annotated version) 『When John Milton set out to write Paradise Lost, he had every intention of writing a masterpiece of the English language. He felt he was destined for greatness, and his creation does not disappoint. With over 9000 lines of some of the greatest poetry every written, Milton does an incredible job of using classical and biblical allusions within a classical format to create a surprisingly modern and incredibly poignant look at the nature of God and man. Add on to this the fact that he was blind when he composed it, and you cannot call PL anything less than a work of genius.
What separates this version from all the others available? The incredibly detailed work of the editors. The annotations of this edition are absolutely fantastic. They are plentiful (sometimes taking up as much as half a page), extremely informative, and surprisingly fun to read. Most annotated works such as this merely clarify antiquated vocabulary, but in this case the editors point out classical allusions, references to current events, and references to Milton's prose works. In addition to the prose and poetry associated with the text, the editors routinely mention the critical discourse (of which there is an unholy amount) associated with Milton. There are even moments where I laughed out loud at their comments. There is also a subtle touch to the annotations, in that there is no indication of annotations within the line. What I mean by this is that there are no bubbles or footnote marks in the body of the poem. The annotations at the bottom of the page simply point to a line number. This allows the reader to ignore the annotations if they choose to do so. Another nice characteristic of this edition is the artwork and illustrations included. There's some really fantastic stuff in there.
All in all, this is an excellent edition of an excellent poem.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (This Chamberlain figure is a bit more the Big Dipper than Wilt the Silt) 『On March 2, 1962 the New York Knicks hosted the Philadelphia Warriors in an N.B.A. game played in Hershey, Pennsylvania. That night, Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain scored 100 points, shooting 36 of 63 from the floor and 28 of 32 from the line. Near the end of the game Chamberlain missed two shots in a row, with teammate Ted Luckenbill getting both rebounds, and then threw down a dun for his 99th and 100th points. Earlier that season the 7-foot-1 center had score 78 points in a triple overtime game, but his coach, Frank McGuire, expected Chamberlain to score 100 points some day. The following night the teams played again, this time in Madison Square Garden in New York City, and Knicks Center Darrall Imhoff got a standing ovation because he "held" Chamberlain to only 54-points (4 over his average for the season).
I had heard this NBA Legends Series I figure of Chamberlain was supposed to commemorate the 100 point game but that would be incorrect since this is a white 76ers jersey and not a Warriors jersey from that season, which was white with red trim and "PHILA" above the #13). You have to admit, you cannot get much more old school than this 76ers jersey (the Boston Celtics do not get credit for never having changed it since the days of Cousy and Russell). The figure is interesting because I cannot figure out if Chamberlain is going for a rebound or if he has just down a finger roll (I am leaning towards the former, but a Chamberlain figure with the ball on his fingertips would have been sweet). Too bad McFarlane does not have a backboard to give a proper sense of the figure's scale, but then this really should be a 7-inch figure rather than a 6-inch one (the basketball figures come in two pieces, so it is not like adding a half-inch to each would be problem).
I do not suppose we are going to ever get a McFarlane figure of Bill Russell, Chamberlain's legendary opponent, but there is a Willis Reed figure going up for a shot with the ball that is part of the NBA Legends Series I that you could set up with this one to make it look like the Stilt is going for a block. You just want to make sure you get the blue jersey variation of the Knicks uniform on Reed. Also available in Series I are Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics, Pete Maravich of the New Orleans Jazz, Bill Walton of the Portland Trailblazers (red with a white variant), and Julius Erving of the 76ers (with a New York Nets variant). There is a Los Angeles Lakers variation for the Chamberlain figure, which gets bonus points because not only did they change the uniform, they also added a headband up top, which is point on for the proper look given the time and team.
Few athletes have been as dominant as Wilt Chamberlain. When he played college ball at the University of Kansas he was the N.C.A.A. changed the rules of the game to include widening the lane and instituting offensive goaltending while revising rules governing in bounding the ball and shooting free throws. Frustrated by triple teaming, Chamberlain played for the Harlem Globetrotters for a couple of yeas and then joined the Philadelphia Warriors to become both the Rookie of the Year and M.V.P. for the 1959-60 season. In 14 seasons with the Philadelphia Warriors, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Lakers, Chamberlain was named league MVP four times (1960,1966-68) and was an All-NBA First Team selection seven times. Chamberlain led the NBA in scoring seven consecutive years (1959-65), rebounding 11 times and in 1968 even led the league in assists. Despite his scoring and rebounding skills, Chamberlain only won the N.B.A title twice, in 1967 with the Philadelphia 76ers and again in 1972 with the Lakers. Chamberlain was never popular ("Nobody roots for Golaith" he often said), nobody ever questioned that his talent on the basketball court matched his size.』 『The New York Knickerbockers made history on March 2, 1962. New York's finest took the court in Hershey, PA, and gave up 100 points -- not to another team, but to another PLAYER. Wilt Chamberlain owns stacks of NBA records, but none as significant as the one he set that night in Hershey, dropping 100 points on the deliriously overmatched Knicks. Wilt won four MVP awards and led the Sixers and Lakers to NBA titles. Chamberlain was a defensive standout as well, but he'll always be remembered for scoring points -- he led the league in scoring average for seven straight years and scored 50 or more points 118 times in his career. The man who once said "No one cheers for Goliath," is remembered as one of the greatest players of all time.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Masterful.) 『The Norwegian chamber choir Grex Vocalis has what it takes. Their treatment of Poulenc is exceptional. In this release of"Liberté", they and their conductor Carl Høgset have given impassioned life to some of the greatest choral works of the 20th century. The choir's intonation is exemplary, their tone polished and tough as nails. Now, for all you die-hard, since-the-beginning fans, I must warn you that this cd is nowhere near A Predator's Portrait or The Chainheart Machine in power or speed. But it still has a very distinct sound that is very original and works well here. This may be a turn-off for those of the hardcore Soilwork worshiping kind, but it's worth a try. For those of you who are just searching around and looking to Soilwork, this is a good place to start. If you like the cd, try Natural Born Chaos, then A Predator's Portrait and so on. Getting back to the cd review, it has it's heavy moments along with some softer and more peaceful ones as well. The songs are nicely put together and isn't a repetative song on the album. But, once again, all of you fans will find them not nearly as powerful as before. The songs which stand out are Rejection Role, Figure Number Five, Cranking The Sirens, and Distortion Sleep. My personal favorites are Overload, The Strangler, and Cranking The Sirens. The only music video (not included) is for Rejection Role, and if you are a fan of the new Headbanger's Ball, you should have seen it as well as a similar In Flames video.
The second disk sounds very similar to a demo tape and doesn't have much of the keyboard. But, it is still six extra songs that are great for any Soilwork fan out there. The stand out track is Steel Bath Suicide, which is the title track of another Soilwork cd. If you are thinking about getting either the regular cd or this combo, I'd have to recommend this set. It's a good buy for fans and lets the new-comers listen to some of the band's older stuff. Although I'm now a huge fan of A Predator's Portrait, I can't forget my old favorites. This cd has an original sound and has some unforgetable songs, and with the inclusion of six bonus songs, there is very little out there that is better. I highly recommend it.』
