Usually ships in 2 to 3 days Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (an uneven set of Frith compositions (mainly) for string quartet) 『ELEVENTH HOUR is a very stylish package from the German Winter&Winter label, with cover art by Ursula Eichinger and eight more of her paintings in the booklet, all the same design but in different colors. Unfortunately, the music inside is of mixed quality. There are five pieces in all. Two of them are quite good ("Tense Serenity" and "Allegory"), one is good ("Lelekovice"), and two are not good ("Fell" and "Stick Figures"). Amazingly, the main musicians are the Arditti Quartet, you can't get any better than that!, but this is not among the best music they have ever performed.
Fred Frith, originally of Yorkshire, who began a long multifarious musical career with the British progressive rock group Henry the Cow in the late 1960s, has lately turned toward contemporary classical. Now a professor of composition at Mills College in the Bay Area, he spent the '80s in NYC's "downtown" scene with John Zorn and others, and the '90s in Germany where he connected with the W&W label, the AQ, composer Heiner Goebbels, and others.
The first piece "Lelekovice" (1990), in nine short movements, was written to accompany a dance. It's quite lively, in an Eastern European folk music mode -- Bartok of course springs to mind, though there is nothing in it nearly as thorny as his most complex quartets. "Tense Serenity" (1997), in five movements, is for string trio and trombone -- Uwe Dierksen plays trombone, and Graeme Jennings of Arditti sits out. The central movement features AMM/Keith Rowe-style radio fragments of songs and speakers, as well as what sounds like a flute, apparently produced by the strings. "Allegory" (2001), in three movements, is for string quartet and electric guitar. Frith's guitar is very subtly employed, and for much of the piece he is either silent or nearly so. Fair warning for those looking for flashy guitar pyrotechnics! These two pieces show what Frith can do, and though neither reveals a strong voice or unique style, they are fine examples of the European postserialist sonic landscape.
The two pieces that fill the rest of the second disc I consider outright failures. "Stick Figures" (1990) is for "6 guitars and 2 players," but all I can hear is two guitars -- one scrapes on the strings in what might be a simplistic parody of the experimental explorations of Hans Reichel, AMM's Keith Rowe and Frith, while another guitar regularly chimes a loud chord that sounds like a fragment of a Morricone soundtrack to a Sergio Leone western. "Fell" (2001), for string quartet and electric guitar, is also very simplistic, a descending series of chords for the strings, with periodic anguished squawks from the guitar. It seems to symbolize a soul's fall into Hell, or any number of more concrete and specific cases of flesh-and-blood humans falling into pain, death and despair.
ELEVENTH HOUR could have been a solid 4-star disc if "Allegory" had been included with "Lelekovice" and "Tense Serenity" on one disc, which would only be slightly over 70' long. I am certainly glad that Frith perseveres in creating adventurous music that is difficult to categorize, but I wonder if there might not be too much concept and too little music in more than just this one Frith project.

Also it was fitting that Pete Rose was included. I remember seeing the players get recognied before that All Star game. My only objection was the inclusion of active players. Some were only midway through their careers. It becomes an apples and oranges type of comparison and now in retrospect we my want to rethink how highly we should value the performances of all those players that used performance enhancing drugs.』
(Why not show the whole ceremony?) 『The DVD was not bad. The bios and stories were well done. The only reason that I bought the DVD was to watch the ceremony. I think that it was misleading that it did not state that the whole ceremony was not included. Again, not a bad DVD, but don't expect the ceremony.』
(A crock!) 『This DVD resembles a frivolous VH1 countdown rather than an important historical documentary and celebration of baseball's best. About 1/3rd of the players on the list are highlighted, essentially ignoring the rest. Possibly the greatest injustice is the exclusion of Barry Bonds from this list. Now the list was compiled prior to Mr. Bonds current aura of baseball invincibility but prior to the 1999 season he had won 3 MVP trophies (tied most in NL history at the time) and 8 gold gloves and was the only member of the 400/400 club. Clearly, he deserved to be included. Bottom line: Inexcusable. Do not waste your time on this DVD.』

(A wonderful panoramic baseball document) 『This is a DVD for everyone - for modern fans, for those nostaligic for a former age, for modern players, and for coaches.
The sheer quality of the historical film footage is what particularly fascinated me, far more than who failed to be included but who ought to have made it etc etc which I am sure will bug some people. I have a feeling that the average standard of professional baseball in the post-war years became much higher than that of the pre-war wars, hence the absence of .400 hitters - especially pitchers who hit .400!
Although some of the pre-war players were doubltess great talents the exagerated claim made on video such that Walter Johnson pitched faster than 100mph is just laughable. Just as the fisherman's fish get bigger with time it sounds like the speed of pitchers becomes faster as the years go by. Footage of Johnson pitching is nonetheless fascinating because his mechanics are just as how people remembered him: effortlessly smooth and fluent. But then it is also obvious that his mechanics lack the dynamism of a similar side armer, namely Randy Johnson, who follows through with more thorough weight transfers to the front foot and thus with a flatter back at follow through. That, combined with the fact that Randy is much taller and whippier than Walter can only mean that Walter Johnson cannot possibly be pitching faster than 100mph. However, it is obvious that Walter does have remarkably late shoulder rotation - something that makes a pitcher appear much faster than he actually is.
Nonetheless a student of the art of pitching could still learn a thing or two from studying the beautifully fluent text-book pitching mechanics of a Walter Johnson, or a Lefty Grove. If that were not enough the superb color pictures of Sandy Koufax pitching are a wonder to behold. I couldn't help but put on the slow motion replay to study him over and over. His mechanics have always struck me as being perfection itself and the footage quoted here only reinforces this.
On the other hand Warren Spahn's pitching mechanics are by modern standards thoroughly Baroque. Gross leaning backwards used to be common fault amongst an older gneration of pitchers such as Bob Feller and Johnny Vander Meer, but Spahn outdoes them all with a degree of leaning backwards that would make a modern pitching coach go pale. It's a small wonder he doesn't fall over backwards and even more of wonder that he was able to maintain control of his pitches with mechanics like that.
Although being a pitcher myself it is harder to comment on hitting mechanics it is obvious that Ty Cobb's hitting mechanics are equally bizzare starting with the hands apart on the bat followed by a ridiculously large 'hitch' in which he almosts touches the home plate with the tip of his bat before lifting it up to start his swing. On the other hand seeing Ted Williams (in beautiful color) swing the bat is a joy to behold as a model of perfection. You can see how hitters in opposing teams used to come out just to watch and learn from him when he was at bat.』

Many of the interviews are with historians who expect a firm understanding of history prior to watching. If you don't have this understanding, many parts may be over your head.
Also, if you are looking for a documentary on the Knights Templar that deals with occult lore, this is not the documentary for you; might I suggest the new Cracking the Da Vinci Code, available for rent at your local video store. Between the 2 of these videos, a person can appreciate the history and myth of the Templars.

In addition, the on switch is very hard for a child to click all the way so that it stays running.
I think this brush is better suited for a 5+ year old. My child loves the brush, and it does a good job once its locked in the on position.』

Battery life is okay, I estimate it costs about½ a cent for her to brush her teeth each time. The future value of that expenditure is far lower than the dental bills I'd otherwise have, so this is a money saving unit.

(Could be so much better.) 『First, I'm tired of all these toys that are packaged with tons and tons of plastic wires that wrap around the toy and go through an inner box.
It took me about 15 minutes to liberate Buzz from his packaging. Because not only are there lots of plastic wires to cut through, but they put tape over all the wire's knots so you can't cut them from the back of the box. Rather, I have to go and get a pair of diagonal cutters from the garage and carefully start snipping the wires from the front - nice and close to Buzz.
Second, the deployable wings don't work all that well. Sometimes they fold up, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they deploy, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they fully extend, sometimes they don't. But here's the worst part...the wing deployment button on Buzz's chest...never works. I'm thinking I may have damaged one of the wings as I tried to pull Buzz away from the plastic formed cradle in the box.
One day my four year old boy is going to be a teenager. When he decides to rebel or lash out I'm going to sit his butt down and force him to listen to all my stories about how I spent hour after hour taking toys out of packaging for him to play with. That should take about six hours.

If I bought again I would buy the smaller version as it seems that it is not that much smaller than this Elmo. (A nice soft Elmo, but they need to feed him more) 『This is a nice huggable, crib-able Elmo that's a good size for many children. It is 15" from tip to toes, though just barely, and is a little skinny - they should feed him more! We don't mind the hard plastic eyes, though I'm not sure the mouth needs to be so hard - it seems to have some kind of cardboard underneath.
It's not the softest toy we have - I think the Jellycat Bunglie toys have that distinction - but it is soft enough.
Just an FYI - We ordered ours from Huggable Teddy Bear (fulfilled by Amazon), and it arrived without any bag or wrapper around it, so the nose was a little dirty and fur a little worn. I suppose it doesn't matter since it would look that way after one day anyway, but I'm glad it wasn't for a gift. Though that's not Elmo's fault, so I haven't lowered the rating for that.

I wish I had gotten the Elmo with the wide happy mouth rather than this small one. The eyes are hard plastic. For some reason I thought the eyes would be safe and soft for children. My niece loves big eyes and I am honestly afraid she may hug this one too hard and hurt her mouth.

What this book provides is more of a how to create the bodies you want based off of the 9-head model. For some, this is great- a classroom in the book. For me, who has been working in this field for a long time and I just needed to crank some bodies out without putting in (for me) an excruciating ammount of work, it fell short.
Also, the proportions of the bodies are a little strange and the hand placement a bit rough. I spent more time fiddling with more natural hand positions on the templates than actually drawing the garments on them.

As an artist's model for the last 24 years and as a costume designer for the last 21 who's drawing skills have not kept pace, I was looking for a more direct and perhaps, academic approach. What I have discovered in reading and studying the text is that the author is a very gifted costume designer and teacher.This is not a book for a quick-fix. The book requires time and attention in each section if you are a beginner. While the book did not address the design style I was hoping for,it more than met the criteria for a strong teaching text.

Let me also comment on the reviews that refer one instead to Covey and others. Those are fine books and certainly have their value. But they do not tell you how to actually deal with an employee's performance issue when the problem has gone on forever and no one seems to have handled it successfully. Those books inspire you to want to do something and to want to use good methods while doing it. Mager's book, however, tells you, step by step, how to analyze a performance issue and how to work with others to correct it. While you are doing that, you could certainly use Covey's thoughts, One Minute Manager concepts, Who Moved My Cheese principles and anything else that you think will add to your effectiveness.
Robert Mager has a droll style that I find appealing and Peter Pipe adds his well-organized thought processes too. This isn't a feel good book, although it is certainly not a stick and carrot book, as implied by others. It is rather, a toolkit to help supervisors and managers intervene when work is not being done as it should be done, find out why there is a discrepancy, and work with the employee to develop methods for improvement.
Yes, there is a bottom line: At some point work has to improve, or else. But that is one of the things I like about the book: It is realistic and addresses the fact that once barriers to performance have been removed, there is only so long that an employee can be allowed to do substandard work. If you use the flowchart and the material in the book, it isn't likely to come to that point--and that is another reason employees as well as supervisors and managers should appreciate this inexpensive guide.
