It is a testament to this man's indie-pop songwriting finesse, that perhaps his least popular major studio offering, which has been criticized of inconsistencies, remains a pretty solidly engaging disc. It's ok not to call the influential arranger super-unique; Smith's gifts were for taking what had influenced him so profoundly and molding it in clever and exciting new ways. Few would be able to make derivative sound so fresh and inspired.』
(The Revolver of our time) 『There is no doubt in my mind that this sits at the same height as The Beatles' greatest work and should be listened to by everyone who likes them. While it is admittedly much more down in the lyrical content, the melodies are sublime and joyous in a way. I started out with Either/Or but this is much, much better, and next I'll be getting his self titled.
Regardless of whether you like his early albums, here Elliot Smith is at the peak of his compositional powers and you should definitely listen to this album.』
(Nothing much to speak of) 『What most people will find here, is a collection of marginally depression, hookless indy pop. After a time, the songs largely start to run together and sound the same. Not a bad album by any means, but certainly not worthy of the praise it receives in this listener's opinion.

(Early Lo- Fi to a More Lavish Multi-layered Release....) 『Steven Paul Smith was born on August 6, 1969 in Omaha. He later changed the name Steven to Elliott. He felt it sounded less "jock-like." I do believe Elliott Smith had a really amazing if not sad and lonely kind of voice. I can feel a bit more uplifting type of mood coming from Elliott Smith's Figure 8, his best and last studio record before he died. Ever since the end of his band Heatmiser, his solo work became more personal and less abrasive. It's hard to imagine at one point he was part of just another small punk/grunge band, who not many have heard of. Many would prefer "Either/Or." Which seems optimistic at times, but kind of sad to me. At this time few singer/songwriters could match Elliott's level of intensity through lo-fi "folk-punk" intimacy. That release sparked interest in the director of Good Will Hunting, Gus Van Sant- who used some of Elliott's songs for his picture. They met while Elliott lived in Portland. Also this exposure proppelled Elliott Smith to major-label status from Kill Rock Stars to Dreamworks. And then came XO in 1998. And Figure 8 in 2000. In my opinion this is his best. It flourishes with rich, multi-layered and more lush tracks. Not as intimate as his earlier solo works w/ the exception of "Everything Means Nothing to Me." This does seem happier though, at least compared to his other works. Definately one of the best solo albums and one of my favorites of this millenium. A wonderful timeless album from one of the better singer/songwriters after those "grunge era" days. My favorites here include: "Son of Sam"- "Junkbond Trader" -"Stupidity Tries" - "Easy Way Out" - "In the Lost&Found" -(for this song Elliott uses the same Abbey Road piano Paul McCartney played on "Penny Lane") Elliott Smith has always been a long time Beatles fan. Even covered their song "Because"- which is on a import of Figure 8. I really do feel he approaches a kind of greatness w/ this almost perfect solo work. I just wish he was still alive creating more. It's just really sad the way Elliott Smith died. Two stab wounds in his chest from a kitchen knife. And I believe the coroner at the time never came to a conclusion whether it was a homicide or a suicide. His death was on October 21 2003. I give Figure 8- 5 stars. It is my favorite Elliott Smith album, if you haven't heard Elliott Smith before you really should give this a listen. Or pick up "Either/Or" if you like a softer sound, but both are essential from him.』
(Musical masterpiece) 『I would agree with Patrick Burnett's comments from 5 years ago. I recently ended a relationship and Elliott has been on repeat since the summer. His music fits perfectly with those moments where you feel like there is nothing left. But in a way, the beauty behind his music lifts your spirit like nothing else. "Everything Means Nothing To Me" was the first song I ever heard from Elliott just last year and it is a small portion of the brilliance found throughout this whole album.
The acoustically amazing "Somebody I Used to Know" and "I Better Be Quiet Now", the very Beatlesque "Pretty Mary K" and "Happiness" are just a few of the standouts in my mind. "Bye" is such a haunting album-ender that gives me chills everytime I hear the echo of the piano.
"Figure 8" has such a wide variety of sound that only a musical genius like Elliott Smith could create. His soft angelic voice along with beautiful melodies make this an album that will forever be labeled "perfection" in my mind. (Appleseed is what you need) 『Although older (animation style looks more like a shadowy video game) the story here is well written and played out. I will not go into details but this one kept me interested all the way through with a nice mix of story line and action. If you buy Appleseed be sure to get the Appleseed Exmachina disc as well. The two stories mesh nicely together and are definitely a good view.』
(Deunan Knute, super soldier at the heart of a mystery) 『Humans, bioroid, cyborgs, utopian, cities, a ruined world, and intrigue. General Uranus sees the bioroid (geneticly engineered people) population as a threat to the liberty of humans and plots their demise. The bioroids wish to make the city of Olympus the best habitat for the survivors of devastation outside their city. And somehow Deunan Knute, until recently a soldier fighting in a war that is never explained to her, is at the heart of all this.
Good flick. The human elements, even the personalities of the bioroids, are the centerpiece of a story in a sci-fi setting. The story itself is complex enough to stay compelling throughout the movie. The animation is of good quality, but I'm only lukewarm on the style. Visually, the scenes are complicated and intense, with the characters as the calmist things in many scenes. Normally I'd find this very distracting, but this movie pulls it off pretty well.
Good action animation with a first rate story.

The children are cute and the historical charactors and costumes are very nice. Katarina had a bit of a problem to deliver her lines. She should take a few more classes. But as an olympic gold metal winner of course her skating and dramatic flair was beyond question the best. The story of course is that the prince falls in love with a 'common' women and wants to get married. He of course has to give up his throne to marry her, but by the end they have found a way he can keep her and the throne.
Katarina is a beautiful women and well accepted in Europe. I am surprised that they are not offering her more jobs here in America. I know I would like to see more of her in various specials and other programing.』
(Amazing Artistry) 『This movie is one of my favorites. It came out quite a few years ago and I first saw it on TV in 1998. I personally love the music of this movie and especially love that I can watch this movie in such a small amount of time. I have always been a fan of Katarina Witt and will always be impressed with her style of skating. This film is an original, it was produced in 1997, long before Disney's Ice Princess was probably even on the drawing board, so there is no rip off of titles or themes. There is an European influence on this movie and it shows. I hope that other's look at this movie for the artistry behind it and enjoy it!』

I will warn though: I didn't give it 5 stars because of the action. It is fairly canned and is purely to drive the story forward... (This isn't a bad thing) however the monsters remind me of watching old Godzilla movies (Not bad, just not the highest production quality by todays standards.)
The relationship with the two "sisters" will capture you and completely rip your heart out too... needless to say you will enjoy this. But I think too, you will be moved by it.』
(A little gem) 『Figure 17 is a bit unusual, and has not received much hype, so you may not know what to expect. Rest assured, this is a fine show, though it's not for everyone.
The core of the show is little girl Tsubasa's relationship with her new "twin", an alien fighting module which has somehow adopted her form. This strange situation gradually brings Tsubasa out of her shell, as she learns to trust herself in combat (with compulsory alien menaces), and starts to make friends at her new school. The setting is rural Hokkaido, and the slow pace and natural setting, and emphasis on emotional growth, give the show a character much like Miyazaki's less action-packed films.
The 45 minute length of the episodes means the show has a different kind of pacing from most anime series. There were a couple of episodes in the first half where I felt my attention wander, but generally the show maintains interest, and the format means sub-stories get a little longer to develop. Unlike a previous reviewer, I thought the colour was fine, especially in the nature scenes, although combat sequences seemed deliberately restrained visually. The music isn't memorable, but is well done and appropriate. I don't remember how the OP/ED went, but I know I enjoyed them!
So if you think you'd enjoy an anime with longer-than-usual episodes, and an unusual mix of Ghibli-esque emotion and occasional combat with alien monsters, give Figure 17 a chance to delight you.』
(Unknown, but good anime!) 『Figure 17 is about a girl from Tokyo who moved to Japan from Hokkaido. She left her friends and everything that she knew behind for her father to fulfill his dream. In the first episode Tsubasa encounters an alien from space who is in a battle against a 'Magyua', who is trying to destroy him and his ship before he crash-lands on earth, in Hokkaido.
Figure 17 shows the development of a young girl, and find who she is. She becomes a more confident person and more apt to deal with people.
On a personal note, I found this to be one of the most moving and stirring animes I have ever watched. It has small periods of combat; enough to keep you in it. Along with it's bloodless violence, it has a good story line. The episodes are long and at times feel a bit drawn out. They draw you in close to the characters so that you almost feel them emotionally.』
(Above and beyond the premise) 『Based on the premise alone, I passed over the show for a year or more. Based on some trusted recommendations, I gave it a try and found the work to be sincere. Takahashi N. (Chief Director) and Yonemura S. (Screenplay) were alumni from Berserk and bring the same focus on character conflict and human development that they successfully used in Berserk. This crew spent time and effort creating Tsubasa and Hikaru and letting them grow up in fits and starts.
The 1 hour format also lends itself to deeper story telling. Despite the trailers, Figure 17 is no cheesy creature-feature of the week; it isa story of growing up with an SF component. Expect thoughtful writing&pacing from Figure 17, not alien stomping action.
The animation features beautiful renditions of rural Hokkaido. I thought that the ending and opening song were good. Overall, the production was excellent.

(Beautiful) 『This is such a beautiful show it's hard to express it in words. The relationship between Tsubasa and Hikaru is the most moving friendship I have ever seen in an anime. Figure17 is very character centered, and the pacing is fairly slow compared to other shows. The series takes its time slowly fleshing out the main characters. The show is as "human" as it gets, and very down to earth despite the sci-fi element. Figure17 isn't stylish at all, and at times can seem very bland. This certainly isn't a show everybody will enjoy. Either you'll like it or hate it. The character designs are very cute despite being a serious show and the colors are very dull. The soundtrack is nothing to rave about either. No wonder it's relatively unknown and underrated among anime fans! Where this show shines is through the well developed characters and their interactions. This is not a happy show in the conventional sense. Neither is it completely depressing although at times it is very very SAD. If you want to see how deeply emotional a friendship can run, watch this show. This is one show that has left an everlasting impression on me, and certainly one I will visit again.』 『Tsubasa is a shy elementary school girl with very few friends. One night she sees a shooting star and follows it to a downed alien spacecraft. The alien gives her a clone named Hikaru, who's as outgoing as Tsubasa is quiet. Pay particular attention to the "gallery" at the end of each section. After being blown away by the featured artists work, you get into their heads a little more by seeing examples they have chosen of other sculptors work. Good stuff!
If you are a beginner, don't be put off by the lack of basic information. Go take a class in clay--whether it's on the wheel or hand-building--get inspired and keep this book to remind you of what could be in your future.
