(Order arrived damaged, no time to fix before Christmas, but company resolved issue the best they could...) 『I ordered this product to arrive a few days before Christmas. I got the product in time, however, the product was damaged...the back right paw was broken off. The piece was there, in the box, and I didn't have time to return it and get another, so I used some super glue to glue the paw back on...then put it back in the box so the paw didn't touch the plastic (so the pressure wouldn't break it off again, not being on all that good so quickly). I'm hoping it held, I haven't heard anything from the gift recipient. The product that was pictured was NOT the product that was sent (it was completely different--picture was a chihuahua sitting on a carpet, with a gift unwrapped in front of it, while the product sent was a chihuahua with no carpet, no gift, with a string of Christmas lights in his mouth). Between this and the item arriving damaged, I had nothing good to say to the seller when I left them feedback. However, the seller (Loveyourpet) e-mailed me wanting to resolve the issue. They also explained that the manufacturer changed the product but left the UPC the same, so until they got complaints, they had no way of knowing the product was different from the one pictured on Amazon. I told them that there wasn't much that could be done now, or even before, due to timing...and that normally I would've returned/exchanged the product, but timing was the issue before Christmas. The seller then asked me to confirm my address, and wanted to at least send me a full refund check by mail. Several days later, I received the check as promised, for the full amount refunded. Considering the seller did what they could at that point to make the customer happy, I went from never buying from this seller again (and a 1 star review at the time)...to, now, I think I would, since they seem concerned about the customer's satisfaction. As I told them, short of having a magic wand...they did all they could at the time, since we couldn't exactly go back in time and resolve the issue, or do it in one day or less at the time so the gift would've been intact by Christmas. 』

(You're Better Off Making Your Own Party Tape) 『At first glance this"Halloween Party"compilation CD seems to be everything you might want--but when the party starts and you drop this in your CD player, your friends will likely recognize it as an act of desperation. Not a single one of the cuts here are by the original artists, and to make matters worse most of them sound like Muzak gone bad.
Even so, I'm giving this particular compilation two stars instead of one, for it includes a number of selections that WILL work if you (as I always do) are making your own party music tape or burning your own party music CD: themes from the films HALLOWEEN, PSYCHO, and THE EXORCIST and a really nice full organ rendition of Bach's"Tocatta en Fuge,"as well as several fairly decent sound effects tracks that work well in the mix.
Still, you can find these worthy selections elsewhere, and frankly if I had known this thing consisted of re-recorded songs by grade Z singers, I wouldn't have popped for the price. Yes, you really are better off looking through your own music collection first--or begging a friend with a good music collection to help you out--and if you absolutely must have this one, you'd do better to dig through the bargain bins than to pay full price.

One of the most difficult to answer is "what kind of music do you play on it?" The easy answer is "whatever you can imagine." As the history of the instrument is so short, it has not been clearly identified with any particular genre besides a specific vein of progressive rock with King Crimson at its root. But, in truth, the Stick's construction and tuning does dictate a specific kind of music to be played on it. Greg is one of the leading players on the instrument, and he embraces and defines the sound of "Stick music" wholeheartedly on "Stick Figures."
The pedagogic strength that "Stick Figures" offers is due to its unprocessed "live" approach. Very few Stick albums that I have encountered express this aesthetic as clearly. Other Stick albums such as Tony Levin's "Stick Man" and the Greisbager/Marotta effort "Awaken the Day" have significant processing and overdubs which makes it difficult for the listener to unravel the technical aspects of the performance. In contrast, "Stick Figures" shows what is possible on the instrument, like a "how-to" manual for Stick playing. In addition to their pedagogic value, the tunes on "Stick Figures" are wonderfully melodic and catchy, and within the style established on the recording as a whole, they disclose a wide variety of moods.
This recording was made relatively early in Greg's career, as he was gaining vocabulary in a new tuning on the instrument (matched reciprocal, for the tech-heads). "Stick Figures" is, effectively, the result of Howard locking himself in a room with a metronome and Emmett Chapman's "Free Hands" book. The performance on "Stick Figures" is a clear indicator of Greg's approach, free of obfuscating technological fetish. Despite its seemingly "lo-fi" feel, the production is clear and pristine.
As an instrument, the Stick occupies an interesting space between classical and jazz, and often compositions on the instrument seem to fall within this overlapping space. The music that comes naturally on the Stick is percussive and staccato with wide arpeggiation in the bass lines. This kind of music is distinctively "Stick music," and "Stick Figures" is a pristine example of the kind of music that the instrument naturally affords. This is the "pop baroque" style that Emmett suggested. "Stick Figures" is not really jazz, but it is jazzy. It is contrapuntal, but it is not strictly classical in style, either. If the activity of both hands is taken into account with its "live" performance aesthetic, a twisting, Escher-esque interplay between hands and digits reveals itself. This is idiosyncratic of "Stick Music."
THE LOWDOWN: This may seem like a review of the Stick as an instrument as much as Greg Howard's recording, but an understanding of the instrument brings with it a greater appreciation of "Stick Figures." Although the music can be enjoyed without comprehending the Stick's nuance, its relevance to the ever-evolving Stick canon should not be underestimated. 』

(Stick voodoo magic) 『I first heard Greg Howard this past summer at a Dave Matthews Concert in Noblesville, Indiana. Greg played the second stage just after the gates opened. As we made our way to our seats we passed the stage and I was magnetically drawn toward the music. I heard what sounded like guitar and bass, but only saw one performer. My jaw dropped as I realized what Mr. Howard was doing. There were no overdubs he was playing it all himself. I knew then I had to hear more of his music. While stick figures doesn't live up to the power of Greg's live performance it is still a great album to relax with. He conjures up images of the late great Michael Hedges. While not as intense as Hedges often was the melodies are often just as good. While I haven't heard any of his other material I wouldn't hesitate to say that this is a good introduction into what he has to offer, and is probably more accessible than his more experimental works such as Sticks and Stones.』
(Greg Howard is a Chapman Stick Wizard!!) 『I first heard Greg Howard on some Dave Matthews Band live recordings. Pretty neat stuff, but I wasn't so impressed as to do much more checking than just find out what a Chapman Stick was.
Last year (2001), Greg Howard and Tim Reynolds did a tour together. I went to the shows in both Houston and Dallas with the desire to see Tim, as I've been a HUGE fan for quite a while now. Greg Howard was on the ticket, so I figured I'd finally get to see a Chapman Stick master in action. The Dallas show was first, and from his first song to the last, I was totally floored by Greg Howard. Better than I'd ever expected. When I went to see the two in Houston, I got more of the same incredible stick playing that I will never forget. While at that concert, I bought Stick Figures because it had a nice cover design. I wanted to take some Greg Howard home with me, so why not take the one with the neat picture on the cover? What the heck did I know the difference?
This CD is more than just a nice cover though. It's 11 tracks of smooth, articulate music that I have become addicted to. Really, the best of the Greg Howard CDs I own. Charmed Life is truly an incredible song, and the centerpiece of this wonderful CD. But every track, from 1 to 11 is solid, excellent music. I'd really suggest picking it up and giving it a try, no matter what kind of music you like. Listen to it 3 or 4 times before making a judgement. By then, you'll be hooked. You won't be able to get it out of your head, and you'll be listening to it all the time. GREAT study music, or great for grading papers. Unobtrusive, yet pleasant.

(BILLY MARTIN TALKING STRAIGHT BASEBALL) 『This was filmed shortly before Martin died and it was intended to be lessons about baseball, of which he shares many, and not necessarily an encompassing video of his career, manager or player. I highly doubt that he could have obtained the rights to the footage of his classic dirt kicking and fights with umpires and Reggie.
This film is introduced by Micky Mantle in an elegiac fashion due to its completion right after Billy's death.
Most of the film is Martin talking the nuts and bolts and stories of his time in baseball as a manager and player. If you are a true baseball fan you will love this as I do. He discusses his tenure as a player and how he swiftly moved up the ranks in coaching due to his baseball acumen. This IS THE REAL Billy Martin! That's worth the price of admission alone.
The last section of the video is dedicated to former players and managers talking about playing for and against him. It is very touching. It's worth the buy just to see Ricky Henderson cry from his love of Martin.

So, he can sometimes present skaters who have won no World or Olympic championship at any time but still influenced the direction of the sports in a substantial way. And for the most part, this is correct. However, especially concerning the more recent years he does show a somewhat North American Favouritism which is a pity because the rest of the book (the early years and the intermediate ones) is highly balanced on that score. This can be illustrated with ice-dancing. Olympic and World Champions Marina Anessina and Gwendal Pezzerat do not get a chapter of their own, even though they showed remarkable innovations like the gender changes in the lifts. Others have since than followed on with this practice. That means they did execute a major influence on the direction the discipline has taken. Similar omissions are present (or to be be exact: they are not present as such in the book!) with regard to other disciplines. Having said that, this still is a wonderful book, with beautiful photo's, and interesting descriptions of the (skating) histories and lives of many skaters. Despite the small bias noted and remarked upon, I would still highly recommend it to fans all over the World.』 『
