It is a testament to this man's indie-pop songwriting finesse, that perhaps his least popular major studio offering, which has been criticized of inconsistencies, remains a pretty solidly engaging disc. It's ok not to call the influential arranger super-unique; Smith's gifts were for taking what had influenced him so profoundly and molding it in clever and exciting new ways. Few would be able to make derivative sound so fresh and inspired.』
(The Revolver of our time) 『There is no doubt in my mind that this sits at the same height as The Beatles' greatest work and should be listened to by everyone who likes them. While it is admittedly much more down in the lyrical content, the melodies are sublime and joyous in a way. I started out with Either/Or but this is much, much better, and next I'll be getting his self titled.
Regardless of whether you like his early albums, here Elliot Smith is at the peak of his compositional powers and you should definitely listen to this album.』

(Early Lo- Fi to a More Lavish Multi-layered Release....) 『Steven Paul Smith was born on August 6, 1969 in Omaha. He later changed the name Steven to Elliott. He felt it sounded less "jock-like." I do believe Elliott Smith had a really amazing if not sad and lonely kind of voice. I can feel a bit more uplifting type of mood coming from Elliott Smith's Figure 8, his best and last studio record before he died. Ever since the end of his band Heatmiser, his solo work became more personal and less abrasive. It's hard to imagine at one point he was part of just another small punk/grunge band, who not many have heard of. Many would prefer "Either/Or." Which seems optimistic at times, but kind of sad to me. At this time few singer/songwriters could match Elliott's level of intensity through lo-fi "folk-punk" intimacy. That release sparked interest in the director of Good Will Hunting, Gus Van Sant- who used some of Elliott's songs for his picture. They met while Elliott lived in Portland. Also this exposure proppelled Elliott Smith to major-label status from Kill Rock Stars to Dreamworks. And then came XO in 1998. And Figure 8 in 2000. In my opinion this is his best. It flourishes with rich, multi-layered and more lush tracks. Not as intimate as his earlier solo works w/ the exception of "Everything Means Nothing to Me." This does seem happier though, at least compared to his other works. Definately one of the best solo albums and one of my favorites of this millenium. A wonderful timeless album from one of the better singer/songwriters after those "grunge era" days. My favorites here include: "Son of Sam"- "Junkbond Trader" -"Stupidity Tries" - "Easy Way Out" - "In the Lost&Found" -(for this song Elliott uses the same Abbey Road piano Paul McCartney played on "Penny Lane") Elliott Smith has always been a long time Beatles fan. Even covered their song "Because"- which is on a import of Figure 8. I really do feel he approaches a kind of greatness w/ this almost perfect solo work. I just wish he was still alive creating more. It's just really sad the way Elliott Smith died. Two stab wounds in his chest from a kitchen knife. And I believe the coroner at the time never came to a conclusion whether it was a homicide or a suicide. His death was on October 21 2003. I give Figure 8- 5 stars. It is my favorite Elliott Smith album, if you haven't heard Elliott Smith before you really should give this a listen. Or pick up "Either/Or" if you like a softer sound, but both are essential from him.』
(Musical masterpiece) 『I would agree with Patrick Burnett's comments from 5 years ago. I recently ended a relationship and Elliott has been on repeat since the summer. His music fits perfectly with those moments where you feel like there is nothing left. But in a way, the beauty behind his music lifts your spirit like nothing else. "Everything Means Nothing To Me" was the first song I ever heard from Elliott just last year and it is a small portion of the brilliance found throughout this whole album.
The acoustically amazing "Somebody I Used to Know" and "I Better Be Quiet Now", the very Beatlesque "Pretty Mary K" and "Happiness" are just a few of the standouts in my mind. "Bye" is such a haunting album-ender that gives me chills everytime I hear the echo of the piano.
"Figure 8" has such a wide variety of sound that only a musical genius like Elliott Smith could create. His soft angelic voice along with beautiful melodies make this an album that will forever be labeled "perfection" in my mind. (Terrible! Terrible! ...) 『Reviews are pretty accurate with character descriptions. One girl is a classic skating brat with the matching stage mom in the big coat. Another is white trash-going past Tonya or Nicole into beer binges and other over the top activity. The third girl is new- a fat girl. Every joke about all 3 girls rings true, but only the fat ones seem funny. Maybe because she's an EVIL manipulative fat girl, instead of being sympathetic. The only reason to see this movie disappears early on - guest American Open Champion and show skater Chrisha Gossard plays the pretty girl skater. Her character falls victim to the fat girl's scheming. At least we get to see her skate her Spanish style program. Things continue into a guy/girl Japanese are-better-jumpers conflict -not funny. My advice? FAST FORWARD to Chrisha, WATCH, and EJECT. Return.』
(Where's the 0 star rating?) 『I tried watching this DVD with a friend last weekend and, almost an hour into it, we decided to eject the disc and go to bed -- and it was only 6 pm!!! We were neither tired, neither in the mood for romance, we were simply bored to tears by this movie with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Even Kathy Griffin couldn't save this yawnfest.

(Funny Mocumentary) 『I like mockumentaries and thought this one had potential as the ice skating world is ripe for picking, but it was not to be. "On Edge" must've looked good on paper as there are lots of good set-ups for comedic moments but the execution is not quite as good as movies like "Spinal Tap" or "Best in Show." "On Edge" features so much self conscious mugging for the camera that I'd bet it was fun to be on the set at the time of filming but for those of us in the audience it's very hard to sit through. Its kind of a shame because the movie has a good blueprint. It focuses on a number of young ice skaters prepping for the regional competition. There's the fat girl, the twins, the klutz, the bad girl, and the one for whom ice skating isn't her real dream but her stage mother won't let her stop skating because she's a natural. Jason Alexander is sort of an everyman, playing Zamboni Phil, and commenting sagely on the different girls and their managers. I'd like to see this movie remade by Christopher Guest and company.』

The first fight is between Lumax Cup, Shooto, Super Brawl 12 and Pride veteran Eagan Inoue and in his MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) debut pro wrestler from the Battlarts Carl Malenko. A solid match but it does get dull at times.
The second fight is between Pride veteran Daijiro Matsui and Extreme fighting, Japan Vale Tudo and UFC 17 veteran Carlos Newton. Excellent fight with little or any stalling.
The third fight is between Universal Vale Tudo 6 tournament winner, International Vale Tudo and UFC 15 veteran Carlos Barreto holds wins over Mikhail Illoukhine, Daniel Bobish , Paul Varelans and Kevin Randleman against IFC 1 tournament winner, WVC 5 tournament winner and AFC 3 tournament winner Igor Vovchanchyn. This was an interesting fight but dull.
The fourth fight is between Lumax Cup and Pride veteran Akira Shoji and UFC veteran&former King of Pancrase Guy Mezger. Good fight with a controversial ending.

(Spheres, cubes, and especially cylinders= success...) 『One of my favorite figure books(!)- If you've ever seen the bestselling How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way, a major teaching that stands out is its emphasis on spheres, cubes, and cylinders when learning to draw anything&everything, including the human figure. Well this is *exactly* what Walt Reed's The Figure is essentially all about. The teachings here were developed in&represent the Famous Artists School, and the figure basics here are really excellent yet standard fare. I've even seen some of these principles repeated by recent Japanese animation&comicbook instructionals. Yes, these principles are definitely great; it's the style&way these principles are communicated that makes this book seem a little bit dated. Reed's instruction here is presented with a combination of work by various artists and black&white photos of nude models, giving this entire effort a very mixed-media effect in its overall design. It was created in 1976, and while the photos are generally well done, the models here look very much to be from that time, and maybe even earlier. Also included: drawings, etchings, paintings&sculptures; all by various masters in the history of western art. Add to this the book's physical dimensions- 9" x 12" x 1/2"- and this is really not a simple looking how-to-draw type book. Yet the teaching here really *is* simple&effective! It's basically about building the figure with cylinders, although spheres&cubes are depicted as well. My favorite aspect of the book is Reed's own drawings&instruction, which demostrates the simplified figure accompanied by a wealth of helpful hints, tips&tricks. These instructions are also shown along with the photos of models to help reinforce principles by drawing from life. Hands&faces get special attention. We even get a little on basic light&shade and a section on figures in action! Usually, it's books that present a unified look&style, like the ones by Bridgman and Hogarth, that tend to look a little more timeless in my personal opinion. But Walt Reed's The Figure is fantastic in its actual *effect*, and that's really, basically the most important thing. It's a worthwhile book to add to anyone's collection! P.S. (One of the top 5 figure drawing books) 『When I review DRAWING books, the first question I ask is, "Is this for BEGINNERS?" Because I feel an obligation to the book buyer to provide good information, and also to prevent a beginning student from being discouraged, and feeling that they are defective, or ....just cannot get it.
It does not seem to occur to the buyer that many authors just cannot teach. Instinct seems to suggest that that if book gets published, it must contain credible instruction by someone who knows how to teach, and everyone seems to desire to cash in on the Big Bucks market of HOW-TO-DRAW. It may seem surprising that this is just not so. Perhaps as many as half of all drawing books are not very good for beginners. I know. I've gotten familiar with most of the books on the market, and I know what I'm looking for in good instruction.
I've purchased over 25 drawing books from Amazon.com, and own the most popular titles of the HOW-TO-DRAW genre. Walt Reed's "The Figure" rates in my top four choices.
It is not "wordy" and "overly intellectual" nor does it presume to teach ZEN or YOGA, or "Drawing on the Artist in your Brain". This book sticks to the subject and it is darn good.
It is chock full of illustrations, and does not throw you to the wolves; but takes you step-by-step through proportion, basic shapes, and finally, detailed drawing. Of the books using the classical (best) approach to drawing, I rate "The Figure" one of the top five books on figure drawing. The price is "right" too. This book doesn't even cost twenty bucks!』

I had a technical problem with the old version of the ebook and found very little support from amazon to fix my problem. I contacted the author Rex Black and he personally made sure that the publisher was contacted and that my problem was resolved.
Regarding the old book it is one of the best books written on test management. I have been using this book since 2003. I have the hard copy version and the ebook version which serves as an excellent reference book on any test project.
Must have for any test manager.

(Straight forward guide to test management) 『"Managing the Testing Process" is the book that I used as a guide when I started as a tester years ago. I found that, while it focuses on the bigger picture of test management, many of the tidbits included help me to report what I do to non-testers.
It may seem simplistic to use tools like Excel or Access to capture and report information. However, I have worked at companies that didn't want to lay out any cash for testing and testing tools. But what comes installed on most corporate desktops? Excel and Access! They are tools that are easily used and readily available for capturing metrics and generating reports. Metrics and reports are the mainstay of the testing community and demonstrate to others that testing is a critical component of the software development process.
I have recently returned to using some of Rex's reports to highlight the problems that exist in my own projects. Everywhere I have worked there seems to be a common theme that producing quality software is difficult, yet Rex's methods for collecting and reporting project statistics give the most bang for the buck when dealing with people who don't want to understand technical issues or read lengthy documents on the status of a software project.
