(Tedious and clumsy)

(Lon Chaney at his best)

(Even a man who is pure in heart)

(The Wolf Man!)

(Classic of the genre)
The Bottom Line:

One of those movies that's labelled a classic even though it's a dated and mediocre film, The Wolf Man feels long even while clocking in at a scant 70 minutes and largely consists of Lon Cheney running around in a ridiculous bear costume; I recognize how significant this movie was (our entire pop cultural idea of the werewolf was pretty much hammered out by this film and its sequels) but it pales in comparison to anything James Whale did in the same time period.

2/4

One of my all time favorite horror movies. Lon Chaney at his best as Larry Talbott/Wolf Man. I was so glad to see that this great classic was on DVD that I purchased immediately, even though it's on VHS, since eventually there will be no more VCR's. Great old wonderful actors and actresses like Marie Ouspenskaya, Claude Rains as Lon Chaney's father. Too bad these wonderful actors are gone. I think Elena Verdugo is the only one left from this great movie. A must buy and see.
The Wolf Man is one hour and ten minutes long and was released on December 12, 1941. It stars Lon Chaney, Jr. as Larry Talbot/The Wolf Man; by the way he did not get top billing. This movie would be one of three monsters movie that were not based on any literary source. The other two are The Mummy and the Creature From the Black Lagoon. Also Larry Talbot becomes a reluctant monster as well. The Wolf Man probably gives us one of our famous movie quotes:

Even a man who is pure in heart
and says his prayers by night
may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms
and the autumn moon is bright.

The plot of the movie is simple; Larry Talbot returns home to Talbot Castle after 18 years away. His older brother John had died in a hunting accident and he is next in line to run the family castle. At a gypsy camp with Gwen Conliffe (Evelyn Ankers) and Jenny (Fay Helm), they get their fortune told. Larry and Gwen duck away while Jenny is getting hers done first. Suddenly there hear Jenny scream and Larry rushes to save her. Larry confronts a wolf and kills him with his silver handle walking cane. In the midst of the battle the wolf bites him. Later he finds out that a werewolf has bitten him. Now Larry Talbot becomes a werewolf himself. Larry becomes insane thinking he is a killer. His father (played by Claude Rains) ties him to a chair one evening to prove that he is not a monster and that it is all in his head. Larry insists that his father take the walking cane with him. Gwen has gone look for Larry in the woods where the police are looking for a wolf. Sir John Talbot is in the same woods too. The werewolf shows up and attacks Gwen. Sir John comes to save Jenny. There he encounters the werewolf and the two of them fight it out. Sir John uses the silver handle walking cane to kill the werewolf. The werewolf transform back to Larry right before Sir John eyes. The fight scene at the end of this movie is great and we actually got to witness a killing scene unlike that in Dracula. Lon Chaney, Jr. would be the only actor to play the Wolf Man in any follow up sequels. This is a great movie to watch and the special effects are spectacular. I am giving this an AAAAA+++++.

Ok, this is another Universal monster movie, but an excellent one! The money spent on this production was pretty hefty. Claude Rains, Ralph Bellamy, Lon Chaney Jr. and others. Wow! Poor Lon Chaney Jr. loves a girl but gets attacked by a wolf. Poor guy, he ends up having some really sleepless nights when a full moon appears. What to do? Maybe Bela Legosi as a gypsy can help? Or that lady gypsy, does she know anything?
When it comes to the horror genre you'll be hard pressed to find a studio with a greater legacy than Universal. Without Universal who knows where our beloved genre would be. While Universal has produced many classics it really is their Monster movies they'll always be remembered for. The Wolf Man proved to be yet another winner for the studio. While not the first werewolf movie, The Wolf Man is the granddaddy of them all and has influenced just about every werewolf movie that followed.

Lon Chaney Jr. despite having a solid career also had it tough it's not easy when your father is screen legend "Man of a 1000 Faces" Lon Chaney Sr. I'm sure the name helped him get his start, but living up to the standards of Lon Chaney Sr. isn't a very easy thing to do, but as great as Chaney Sr. was I always preferred Jr., but that's just me. Lon Chaney Jr. stars as Larry Talbot who by night becomes The Wolf Man and it was yet another Iconic Monster in the legacy of Universal studios.

The Wolf Man in my opinion still holds up pretty well, while obviously the movie is dated seeing as it was made in 1941 and quality of life and filmmaking has changed a whole lot since 1941, but I'd go as far to say this one holds up better than most of the Monster movies. While Bride of Frankenstein is still my all time favorite Monster flick I think The Wolf Man holds up slightly better.

The screenplay by Curt Siodmak is terrific; while the characters aren't the best developed they are all interesting and entertaining and this script is as good as you'll find in the horror genre. Like many movies of its era The Wolf Man is as much a drama as it is a horror movie. And the script by Siodmak works well and the characters are great.

Director George Waggner creates a masterpiece with this one. The pacing is solid and there's never really a slow moment, each scene moves the movie forward and The Wolf Man also has a really great eerie feel that even by today's standards holds up. While obviously The Wolf Man isn't scary anymore it still has a great sense of dread and an excellent eerie feel through out.

As much as I love horror flicks of the 30s and 40s my only complaint sometimes is the acting. Some of the best acted horror movies of all time came from the 30s and 40s, but they also had a lot of over the top acting, which really isn't the case in The Wolf Man. Bela Lugosi is solid in a cameo and Claude Rains steals the show as Sir John Talbot. Claude Rains gives a brilliant performance and was the strongest link in the cast.

Lon Chaney Jr. gives the best performance of his career as Larry Talbot. Like the Frankenstein Monster, Talbot is a sympathetic character. Once Larry turns into the Wolf Man he cannot help himself and he's very much a tortured soul. Characters like Larry Talbot were done a lot in the classic era of the genre and here it works well again.

The final act to The Wolf Man is quite suspenseful and quite tragic and is one of the best final acts you'll find in this genre. The Wolf Man is a classic of the genre and one of the most important horror movies ever made and was yet another winner from Universal Studios.

Even a man who is pure in heart,
And says his prayers by night,
May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms
And the autumn moon is bright.

If you haven't heard this piece of horror-movie doggerel before, you'll never forget it after seeingThe Wolf Manfor two reasons: it's a spooky piece of rhyme and nearly everybody in the picture recites it at one time or another. Set in a fog-bound studio-built Wales,The Wolf Mantells the doom-laden tale of Lawrence Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr.), who returns to the estate of his wealthy father (Claude Rains). (Yes, Chaney's American, but the movie explains this, awkwardly.) Bitten by a werewolf, Talbot suffers the classic fate of the victims of lycanthropy: at the full moon, he turns into a werewolf, a transformation ingeniously devised by makeup maestro Jack Pierce. Pierce was the man who turned Boris Karloff into the Frankenstein monster, and his werewolf makeup became equally famous, with its canine snout and bushy hairdo--and, of course, seriously sharp dental work. The Wolf Manwas a smash hit, giving Universal Pictures a new monster for their already crowded stable, and Chaney found himself following in the footsteps (or paw prints) of his father, who had essayed a monster or two in the silent era. This is a classy horror outing, with strong atmosphere and a thoughtful script by Curt Siodmak--well, except for the stiff romantic bits between Chaney and Evelyn Ankers. It's also got Bela Lugosi (briefly) and Maria Ouspenskaya, the prunelike Russian actress who foretells doom like nobody's business.--Robert Horton

(After watching"Caretaker", I was hooked)

(Converted a non-trekkie)

(SIMPLY THE BEST)

(A Good Start For Voyager)

(The 1995 Pilot.)
I'd watch an episode of Star Trek if there was nothing else on to watch, but for some reason, something about"Voyager"intrigued me. After watching"Caretaker", I was instantly hooked.

Kate Mulgrew makes a superb showing as Trek's first female captain."Voyager"has many firsts that have never before been done in Star Trek, such as being so far away from home. Other episodes have lost contact with Starfleet, but they've still be close enough to home. Voyager is out there in the middle of no where.

This first episode reminded me of the Newbury Medal winning book"The Giver". The people were so sheltered in their world. They didn't know what it was like on the outside. Kes' people are kind of like that. The Caretaker provides everything for them, but he is dying and is looking for a replacement.

This was definitely a great beginning to the show. I can't wait to get the first season DVD set!
I watched the pilot and for a college woman who could care less about star wars or star trek, I was intrigued by the plot and eventually I came to find Voyager to be one of the best shows on TV simply because of the lessons we mere humans can learn from this utopia imagined by roddenberry.
STAR TREK VOYAGER IS THE BEST BUT I NEED ALL SEASONS IN DVD PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Star Trek-Voyager"is the fourth series in the ever-lasting sci-fi franchise, and it's like"Lost In Space", but with a Federation crew, and they have definitely gone where no man has gone before.
As Captain Kathryn Janeway, Kate Mulgrew surely commands respect as she and her crew are blasted 70,000 light years away from home by some array called the 'Caretaker'. The crew itself is quite diverse and interesting, especially Chakotay (Robert Beltran), Tuvok (Tim Russ), Tom Paris (Robert Duncan MacNeill), and B'elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson). I'm not very happy with Neelix (Ethan Phillips). I stick with the Doctor (Robert Picardo) as the most fascinating comic relief in the show.
"Voyager"might have gone through a bumpy start with critics and fans alike, but I believe that this pilot episode delivers the goods, and it's better than the one from"Deep Space Nine".

Days before this episode aired on UPN, Robert Picardo hosted a special, to tell the audience, what Star Trek: Voyager is about.

In late 2371, a renegade group known as the Maquis operate outside the law to right what they see as Federation injustices. After infiltrating a Maquis cell to apprise Starfleet of the group's activities, Lieutenant Tuvok, along with the crew of a ship commanded by the Maquis captain Chakotay, disappear in an area of space known as the Badlands. Tuvok's commanding officer, Captain Janeway, leads a mission to find the Vulcan lieutenant, enlisting the aid of Starfleet prisoner Tom Paris, a former Maquis member, to guide her ship, the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656, through the Badlands.

Considered a traitor by most of Voyager's crew, Paris strikes up a friendship with Ensign Harry Kim, a naive young Starfleet Academy grad. Kim learns that Paris was drummed out of Starfleet after his piloting error caused the deaths of three officers. The outcast joined the ranks of the Maquis, but was soon arrested by Federation authorities.

After reaching the Badlands, the U.S.S. Voyager encounters an inexplicable phenomenon that sends the ship hurtling to the far side of the Delta Quadrant, located 70,000 light years from their former position. The catapult effect kills a number of crewmembers, including the Chief Medical Officer, who is replaced by an Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH) that attends to the wounded. But the EMH has barely begun his work when the entire crew of Voyager is transported to what appears to be a pastoral farm, populated by friendly humans. But it's only an illusion; the farm is actually the interior of the Array, a huge space station, and the residents are holograms. The crew is imprisoned within a strange laboratory facility, alongside the missing Maquis.

After being subjected to a painful examination, the crews of Voyager and the Maquis vessel are returned to their respective ships, docked outside the Array. But two crewpersons are missing: Harry Kim and B'Elanna Torres, the half-Klingon, half-human engineer from the Maquis vessel. Returning to the "farm," Janeway confronts the only remaining inhabitant, an old man playing a banjo. But the man cares nothing about their dilemma and offers them no information about the missing officers.

Noting that the Array is sending energy pulses toward the fifth planet of a neighboring system, Janeway sets course in that direction. Far beneath the surface of that planet, an ailing Kim and Torres regain consciousness in a medical facility. But what they're doing thereâ€" and why â€" they have yet to discover.

En route to the fifth planet of a neighboring system, Voyager's crew encounters Neelix, a Talaxian scavenger. He explains that the Array has been bringing ships into the region for many months. Neelix guesses that the "Caretaker," who controls the Array, may have sent the missing crewmembers to the Ocampa, a race that lives two miles below the surface of the fifth planet. Neelix volunteers to be their guide and they accept.

Meanwhile, Kim and Torres are being cared for in the Ocampa medical facility. Although they now live in a subterranean society, the Ocampa inhabited the planet's surface until it was struck by an environmental disaster 500 years ago. Since that time, they have lived underground, with all their needs provided by the man they refer to as the Caretaker.

Beaming down to the planet's surface, Neelix introduces Janeway to the Kazon, a savage alien species that has taken possession of the arid Ocampan world. Janeway asks Jabin, the Kazon leader, if he can help them, but he refuses.

Neelix is hoping Jabin will trade Kes, an Ocampan woman he is holding captive, for some of Voyager's precious water. But the Kazon are more interested in obtaining all of Voyager's technologyâ€" forcibly. When Jabin tries to take the crew hostage, Neelix helps them escape and beam back to the ship, along with Kes.

Kim and Torres persuade an Ocampan nurse to show them a route that could lead to the surface. On Voyager, Kes agrees to lead Janeway and the others through the tunnels to her underground city to search for the pair.

As the Array increases the rate of the energy pulses that power the city, Kim and Torres begin their journey, narrowly missing the search party from Voyager. Tuvok theorizes that the increased activity of the Array may indicate that the Caretaker is dying; he is clearly attempting to give them a surplus of power that will sustain the Ocampa after he is gone.

The search is complicated by a new turn of events. The Array is now firing a weapon at the planet to seal up all of the energy conduits, the tunnels that provide the only access to the city. This will protect the Ocampans, but prevent the others from escaping. Splitting up, Paris, Neelix and Kes find Kim and Torres, and send them up to Voyager. Then Paris and Neelix go back for Janeway, Tuvok and Chakotay. Chakotay's skepticism towards Paris' loyalty is erased when Paris saves his life.

Returning to the Array, Janeway again encounters the old man, whom she realizes is the Caretaker. He explains that he was bringing beings from across the galaxy to the Array in the hopes of finding a compatible species with which he could procreate, thus providing the Ocampa with someone to care for them after he dies. But no species has been a match so far.

Janeway tries to convince the Caretaker to send Voyager and the Maquis ship back home, but he refuses. Apparently, the Caretaker wants to destroy the Array so that it won't fall into the invading Kazon's hands. But he dies before he can carry out his plan, and Janeway is left to decide whether to use the Array to get homeâ€" which would leave it intact for the Kazon â€" or to destroy it and save the Ocampa. She chooses what seems to be the only moral option and makes a mortal enemy of the Kazon, even it meant violating the Prime Directive.

With Chakotay's ship destroyed in the battle with the Kazon, Janeway asks the Maquis to become part of Voyager's crew. She also allows Neelix and Kes to stay aboard. With Chakotay her First Officer, Tom Paris reinstated as a Starfleet lieutenant, and Torres and Kim cured by the Emergency Medical Hologram, Janeway and her new crew set course for the long trip home, 70,000 light-years away.
A program that never entirely made up its mind what it's supposed to be about,Star Trek: Voyagerbegan life in 1995 with some truly fascinating prospects in its two-hour pilot episode, "Caretaker."

"Caretaker" opens in the 24th century, a setting contemporary with that ofStar Trek: The Next GenerationandStar Trek: Deep Space Nine. Carrying over story elements from each of those series,Voyager's debut finds Starfleet Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) stepping into the middle of Federation troubles with the Maquis, an army of rebels violently resisting the interplanetary organization's treaty with brutal Cardassians. Janeway hopes to intercept a Maquis cell that unknowingly has a Starfleet spy, Tuvok (Tim Russ), in its midst. Instead, bothVoyagerand the Maquis ship under surveillance are accidentally catapulted out of the galaxy's Alpha Quadrant (the familiar stomping grounds of Starfleet personnel) by a benign but dying being called the Caretaker.Voyagerends up in the unexplored Delta Quadrant, some 70,000 light years away. Several ofVoyager's key crew members are killed during the mishap, prompting an agreement with the skilled Maquis fugitives to cooperate on returning home.

So much seemed dramatically promising in this debut ofStar Trek: Voyager, especially the unwieldy alliance of Starfleet regulars and hostile Maquis, and the likelihood that a lifetime spent in isolation, trying to get home, would lead to the development of a self-contained society on the ship. The curiously cheesy sets and fascinating, progressive management style of Janeway (half mommy, half taskmaster) were also new developments inStar Trekculture. Yet things didn't turn out to be quite so intriguing or original as the years passed--though that doesn't meanVoyagerisn't a sporadically good show. It just isn't the one that "Caretaker" seemed to promise.--Tom Keogh

(Good Release of a Fun FIlm)

(2 stars out of 4)

(Mixed Bag Of Parables, Twist Endings, Dark Comedy and Horror!)

(A must have)

(Very Disappointing.)
Even though this is the film where the traggic accident with the late Vic Morrow occured - it still had the big screen flavor of the classic series.

Divided into four stories with a book-end open and close, Joe Danta, John Landis, George Miller and Steven Spielberg each direct their stories of magic, fun and the world only known best as Rod Serling's THE TWILIGHT ZONE.

My favorite story is called "Kick The Can" and stars the late Scatman Crothers as a man with a mission - a mission that makes all those who haved lived a full live realize how special their life really is. This one has a heart and sole and is touched with that Spielbergian Magic that only he can do.

Joe Danta directed "It's A good Life" which is a direct remake of the orginal series episode where a young boy controls his 'world' around him until he realizes through a stranger who mistakenly is visiting - that life is better when life happens on its own and is not whimmed up at the blink of an eye!

George Miller gets to direct another famous episode made popular by WIllaim Shatner origionally - now starring John Lithgow as the "Terror At 20,000 Feet" unravells it scarry tale aboard an airplane that may or may not have an extra passenger - but only Lithgow knows!

John Landis directed the late VIc Morrow final performance in a bizzar story of the Nazi's world and entering a surreal enviornment where everyone is treated exactly like you treat others. Evil, harsh and recist!Subtle but directly pointing at the dark side that is in each of us!

The book-ends are with Dan Akroyd and Albert Brooks - you have to see it to get the enourmous amount black comedy of the sequence. It will make you laugh - but you may jump a little! Boo!

Great production value - and although the DVD doesn't have any extra's - its still a good film at a good price. I liked watching it.....a lot! 3-27-09

The Bottom Line:

A misbegotten film that has nothing to offer fans of the show, neophytes, or anyone else, The Twilight Zone movie is poorly made and only worth watching for TZ fans who have to see it so they can say they hate it for themselves.

The film, true to many Twilight Zone episodes, starts with a seemingly common place setting. This prologue stars the always wonderful Dan Ackroyd and Albert Brooks and is accompanied by a soundtrack of "Midnight Special" as covered by CCR. Suffice it to say it concludes with the Twilight Zone's trademark twist ending. This clever beginning is followed by four segments with different casts and directors. They're all narrated by Burgess Meredith, who starred in some of the original television episodes.

The first segment is the only one that was originally written for the movie rather than being a reworking of one of the episodes from the 1960's series. Vic Morrow, who famously died in an on the set accident while filming this portion stars as a bigoted man who learns what life would be like if he was viewed differently by others. But does he learn his lesson too late? Probably because the real life tragedy that accompanied this part of the film necessitated it, this segment seems both too short and somewhat cobbled together.

KICK THE CAN has a wonderful performance from Scatman Crothers, but other than that it didn't do much for me. It feels too sentimental. You can tell it was made by Spielberg in one of his more sappy, family friendly phases.

ITS A GOOD LIFE is a surreal and darkly comic take on the original. In the beginning, those not familiar with the source material will believe Anthony is innocent, but is he...? This segment is marred by a happy ending which is quite different than the disturbing one in Rod Serling's TV series.

The final segment, NIGHTMARE AT 20,00 FEET is decent. You do see too much of the monster but what you see is frightening. John Lithgow is convincing as the paranoid main character.

So like many anthology movies this is a mixed bag. All in all the movie just doesn't quite come up to the perfection of the original show.

This movie is a must have for the Twilight Zone fan. It includes four stories with two or more of them being remakes of original twilight zone episodes.
It is not a movie, but a remake of 4 episodes. What were "classics" in their original form, are now under performing and obsolete. Not to fault the cast, they did a good job. It just did not work at all.

A highly anticipated release for fantasy fans in the summer of 1983,Twilight Zone: The Moviepresents three adaptations of classic episodes (and one original story) from Rod Serling's anthology series by a quartet of the biggest directors in Hollywood. With Stephen Spielberg (also the film's co-producer), John Landis, George Miller (The Road Warrior,Happy Feet), and Joe Dante behind the camera for this portmanteau feature, one might expect Serling's episodes to positively gleam with star power, but the truth is thatTwilight Zone: The Movieis a hit-and-miss affair. Landis opens with an amusing nod to the original series' pop-culture appeal with Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks riffing on their favorite episodes before a hair-raising shock finale; unfortunately, his second offering is a bland morality plan about racial tolerance that will forever be overshadowed by the accident that claimed the lives of star Vic Morrow and two child actors during shooting. Spielberg's take on George Clayton Johnson's "Kick the Can" looks lovely and is well performed by its cast (especially Scatman Crothers), but it struggles to bear up under the weight of treacley sentiment so common to the director's films at the time. Dante's version of Jerome Bixby's "It's A Good Life" (about a boy with monstrous powers) is rife with his trademark energy and black humor (and his cast of regular players, including Kevin McCarthy and William Schallert, strike the right balance of terror and comedy). But it's Miller's revamp of Richard Matheson's legendary "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" that delivers the biggest payoff, thanks to John Lithgow's super-charged turn as a nervous airline passenger who's convinced he's seen a monster tampering with the plane's wing. Burgess Meredith (himself a veteran of the originalTZ) provides narration; the widescreen DVD features no extras save for the original trailer and a remastered digital transfer.--Paul Gaita

(Awesome!)

(A little corny at times, thus minus a star, but still pretty good.)

(Sorry "Star Wars." "Flash Gordon" is MUCH BETTER!)

(Flash...AA-aaah!!!!)

(Super Movie!)
Takes you back! Awesome art by Alex Ross on the cover. Perfect picture and sound. Buy it stupid!
I first seen this as a kid, and loved it. I just recently bought it, and realized how corny it is at times. When you're a kid you don't know about corny, but when you get older, you start to realize what corny is and it's not good. But if you try to ignore the corny parts, it's actually quite good. The film can actually be quite dramatic at times. Performances, apart from Sam J. (what's his name?)'s acting, are pretty good. Too bad about the Flash Gordon guy - terrible actor. The story and plot are great since this is just a remake of the original 1936 "Flash Gordon" serial. The end is action-packed, and even though the special effects are not "Star Wars" effects, I still thought they were pretty good. Then again, I am a "Dr. Who" fan, so special effects don't bother me as much as some people. If you like old sci-fi shows like "Flash Gordon" and "Dr. Who", then I highly recommed this film.

I'm not really the biggest science fiction fan, but there is no denying that "Flash Gordon" is a real masterpiece.

I say it is much better than "Star Wars," because for the most part, "Star Wars" is basically a good guy, bad guy, shoot em up series. (With the one exception of "Revenge of the Sith" which shows Anakin's tragic fall into evil.)

"Flash Gordon" is a much deeper story. Flash is an ordinary football player who finds himself suddenly thrust into space, and he discovers that Ming the Merciless is going to destroy the earth. So, Flash tries to stop him with what knowledge he has. (Football knowledge!) So rather than superheroes, we have ordinary people who use what knowledge they have. (Great!)

Moving on, we see that there are different factions who oppose Ming, but the different factions don't care much for each other either. So, our football hero has to do what he can to not only make friends with the different factions, but get them to work together against Ming as well. (Even better!)

Max Von Sydow makes Ming very, very bad. But he carries a charm that makes it virtually impossible not to like him a little. (Especially when he has a one on one chat with Flash and expresses that he would rather have Flash on his side.)

Dale is a great woman of interest for Flash. She can be romantic, but she also shows a little 'girl power,' and she has a now and then explosive fury which adds some comic relief: "Let go of me! I just got engaged!"

All in all it is a great story full of menace, suspense, and the much needed comic relief. It also has a great coming together of different subplots, not to mention the totally awesome music by Queen.

I'm not even a science fiction fan, and I say there is NOT ONE dull moment.

An interesting side note is that this movie has a nice transition from 70s-80s feel.

One of my all-time favorite movies. If you love the movie, you should also buy the soundtrack. The combo of the movie + Queen's music is wicked awesome.
This movie is so fun to watch. My oldest daughter was asking about this movie the other day. I have it on vhs, but would prefer it on dvd. Some of the lines can be corny at times, but that's okay. The movie is terrific. The color in the film is vibrant. Some of the characters costumes, and the props are beautiful. I wouldn't say that this is a movie for little ones because of the violence or adult themes though.
Movie DVD
When the totalitarian planet of Mongo decides on a whim to obliterate Earth, it's up to the lunk-headed quarterback Flash Gordon and his oddball companions to make the universe safe for democracy. Based on the classic (and infinitely more reputable) comic strip and its '30s screen serialization, this cotton-candy-colored trash classic deserves immortality for Queen's unforgettably pulsating soundtrack alone. The legendary Max von Sydow appears to be having a blast as the evil Ming the Merciless, while Ornella Muti, as his daughter, is the living embodiment of what attracts adolescent boys to comics in the first place. (She makes Barbarella look mundane.) One of the most shamelessly entertaining movies ever made, this is a knowingly absurd sensory freak-out that'll have the viewer blissfully checking the sky afterward for signs of Hawkmen.--Andrew Wright

(I love Grudge - ALL OF THEM)

(Takashi Shimizu should sue Hollywood for this.)

(This IS supposed to be a horror movie, right...?)

(Once Too Often To The Well)

(Same Grudge, just much much worse)
I love all of the Grudge films - particularly film no 2.
Grudge 2 was the scariest ghost story I had seen on film since Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.
Where I grew up as a kid there were resident ghosts and they made me sure I'd never be alone.
This was during the days when people thought that after the body ceases to be then the person dies because they're the body which has been disproved by every means whereas serious research has been conducted.
In Iceland it was said on Grudge 1 , 'Japanese ghosts are the scariest of all ghosts'and it was done seriously and to seriously promote this movie - Grudge 1.
Grudge 2 one star reviews scare me even more. What kind of far more frightening ghost movies have those reviewers seen?
I mean for me that's that - this is serious criticism of the Grudge and I give it five stars - positive criticism.
The ultimate achievement in the making of a seriously convincing and seriously sinister ghost story.
Those are the kind of ghosts that'd scare the ghosts that resided in my childhood homes.

I came into this one with fairly high hopes, having been a fan of the previous films in the franchise, especially the original Japanese versions. I was sorely disappointed. This film has a different writer and director, and it really does show. While Shimizu uses a style where the story doesn't flow from start to finish, the new director uses a traditional beginning, middle, and end formula.

The actors who played Kayako and Toshio have been replaced, and while this isn't necessarily bad as a rule, it is here, Toshio is replaced with an actor who looks far too old for the part, and the actress for Kayako, while she looks the part well enough, just can't copy the original's creepy movement.

The special effects are lackluster to say the least. The lighting is far too bright, and doesn't set the mood that has made the Grudge what it is. The makeup is also poorly done, making Kayako and Toshio seem like something from a high school play, using flour to make them ghostly.

The plot picks up after the second movie, naturally, and is set in the apartment building seen in the second movie, the only time the original house is seen is during flashbacks. The kills are few and far between, and they're all pretty much rehashes of old kills with new victims, Kayako appearing out of paintings, instead of pictures, dragging people into bath tubs, etc. One thing that stood out, and not in a good way, was the addition of a sister for Kayako. As soon as I saw that, I almost hit stop and threw the DVD away, but then I remembered I paid about $30 for this. I remember in the special features of the previous American Grudge movies, Shimizu commenting about how the American producers were really dead set on the idea of giving Kayako a twin sister, and he thought it was an idiotic idea. Well congratulations Hollywood, you got your way. I salute you! With one finger, guess which.

If you're thinking of buying this, don't. Borrow it from a friend who was unfortunate enough to pay up for it, heck, they might even just give it to you. Unless you find it in a bargain bin somewhere, it's not worth the money, go track down a copy of Kairo instead, you'll be much more satisfied.

Wow, maybe this is a different Grudge 3 than everyone else here thought so highly of.

This has got to be one of the most BORING movies I've ever seen. And sadly, this fact is even more punctuated by the fact that its supposed to be a horror movie.

At one point in the movie, I was pretty sure I'd been watching for at least an hour. Unfortunately only about 27 minutes had passed.

Yes, this is a painfully boring story. Far more "dialog" than anything else.

Don't get me wrong, I really liked the first Grudge. I was so-so about the second one. But this one is just tiresome. I can only hope they don't decide to make a Grudge 4.

Save your time for something more interesting. Like... watching paint dry.

I think it's time to lay the Grudge franchise to rest.

This 3rd installment is poorly written, poorly acted, re-visits familiar territory and adds nothing to the legacy of the first movie.

I found 2 fairly good "scare" moments in the film, but that's about it. The first Grudge film managed to be scary throughout by setting a tone and mood. The films since the first one have not been able to capture this eerie feeling.

Grudge 3 just doesn't work. It's not scary, the characters are uninteresting and the new pretzel ghost can't hold a candle to the original.

I found it funny that the kid ghost is now bigger, taller and has taken to wearing brown shorts. I wonder if he'll be a teenage ghost in the 4th one?

The first Grudge is a horror classic as far as I'm concerned. Although the 2nd one was not bad it did not measure up to the first. This 3rd one is a pale imitation. Enough is enough.

At this point the Asian horror genre is somewhat tired due to American remakes of the Ring&The Grudge, followed by their sequels. The first Grudge came at a time when we were still intrigued by this creepy, robotic moving ghost girl which led to a decent film. The second was pretty much the same deal with a little less of a budget, a slightly weaker story, and an appearance of Kumar. Now we are brought to the third and hopefully last installment which lacks just about everything. Obviously the budget was way less since it was a straight to dvd release, the story was the same but with a few boring twists, and our scary ghost girl/brother have really lost their effect.

The story picks up kind of where the second one left off. The apartment in Chicago where our asian ghosts have caused havoc is now forcing tenants to flee leaving it close to shutting down. Max is the manager of the complex who lives there with his two younger sisters. As he desperately tries to retain and gain new tenants he winds up becoming possessed by the spirits. As his sisters lives lay in the balance between the spirits and their possessed brother they are told they must do a ceremony to end the spell.

Out of the series this by far is the worst of all. It was supremely boring with way too much dialogue. To watch the film you will have to fast forward through roughly 70 % of it or you will be fast asleep in you chair like Santa at work. Even the ghost girl and her brother were way less creepy. The way the girl would crawl around in that bizarre twitching motion has even been cut back. I guess they couldn't afford the camera function that made it appear so scary because this one didn't have it. Even their make-up was more b. It looked like they rolled the actors in some flour and threw them out on set. When this one is returned it will get the Sid patented "He's gone, the evil's gone from here!" We would NOT have enjoyed this one back in the glory days.

Kayakos curse continues killing the residents of a chicago apartment building. News of these deaths reaches japan where kayakos sister knows the secret that could end the grudge once&for all. Will she be able to stop the raging spirit or will she become another victim? Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 03/24/2009 Run time: 90 minutes Rating: R

(Crazy Trucks)

(2.5 stars out of 4)

(Great popcorn movie)

(Great Movie for a Great price!)

(Great Perfect Cheese)
Who'd have thought a movie about killer trucks could be so great? I have loved Maximum Overdrive since I first saw it when I was a kid. All the blood and gore appealed to me, and the AC/DC soundtrack didn't hurt. I seem to watch Maximum Overdrive at least once a week, and it never gets old. A fantastic cast really does a great job with their characters and adds that something special to the movie. Of course anything based on some of Steven Kings work will be good, especially with the man himself directing and writing the short story it was based on as well as the script. Maximum Overdrive is a must buy for any Steven King fan, or the sci fi/horror fan.
The Bottom Line:

If you go into Maximum Overdrive with the right frame of mind (basically don't expect anything intelligent) then you'll probably have as good a time as I did watching trucks with no drivers terrorize middle America; it's not good per se, but it's good trash.

Stephen King writes and wait for it, actually directs this adaptation of his short story "TRUCKS" (not to be confused with the later made for Sci-fi remake which was just a plain no brainer). Packed with a heavy hitting soundtrack by the Australian thunder from down under AC/DC (ironic I know), Maximum Overdrive despite it's cheeseball story will delight gorehounds and headbangers a like.

Much like a mechanical version of George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, machines big and small begin revolting violently against people. Loaded with more dead bodies than an action movie and seriously dark humerous moments, this is a perfect movie for those saturday nights when nothing is on and you're so bored staring into space hurts. Hands down my favorite scene is the incredibly well shot chase sequence, where a huge and seriously ticked off Mack truck chases down a newly married couple down a deserted highway. Awesome. Though I still love the scene with the lawnmower, classic.

More so, the quiet moments of the film are usually slow but well accented with AC/DC's earlier blue's style motiff filling in the despair and desparation. So if you're looking for ninety minutes of bad B-movie to help you escape the day, look no further than Maximum Overdrive and enjoy Stephen King's hilarious cameo.

One of the best Stephen King movies ever! Absolutely Great movie for a Great price!
This movie is great 80s cheese. The movie has great atmosphere and the music fits perfectly. BUT WHY is there NO WIDESCREEN?? This movie has been edited to fit your tv.

(Excellent!)

(A Page-Turning Read but Shallow Characters)

(Edge of your seat)

(Relic)

(So intense that I was holding my breath while I was reading and didn't even know it!)
Superb! This had just the right mix of chills and the setting - the Musuem of Natural History - couldn't have been spookier or more fitting. For anyone who hasn't read a Preston / Child novel before, this is the place to start. Agent Pendergast is the most unique FBI agent to ever grace a thriller. You will not be able to put this one down!
I just finished Relic and can say it was very hard to put down. Once the book gets past the trippingly-awkward, uninteresting exposition, the action and sequence of events are enthralling and well plotted. This novel's strengths are its incredible sense of claustrophobic doom, logical sequence, edge-of-your-seat suspense, and scientific rationalization. Some of the science involved, however, is a stretch, and the most discerning readers who tend to scrutinized everything in fiction need to accept certain constants in order for this novel to succeed. The characters, however, even the immutable Agent Pendergast, are two-dimensional at best. In no part of the story do I care about any of these flat characters. There is no real background, motivation, subtleties, or revealing nuances about any of the central characters, and that is where the book falls flat. But this is not a novel about character. If I wanted well-developed characters that I cared about, I would have read a King or Irving novel. This is a book about a monster and the world it threatens. This is a book about action, sequence, horror, thrill, and suspense. And it is an excellent choice for reading on that level. Interesting characters or not, I cannot wait to read Reliquary next.
This was my first Preston/Child book and it will definitely not be my last. The Relic keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout.
The first of the Pendergast thrillers, it keeps you biting your nails to the end!
I had several situations while I was reading this novel in which I realized that I was holding my breath and didn't even know it. Then you stop and ask the question... I wonder how long I have been holding my breath?

This book is a top notch thriller. I have just recently learned about these two authors and wanted to give them a try. I found out that there first novel was "Relic" and I thought to myself isn't that the cheesy mid 90's horror movie that I never saw? Well yes and no. The movie is based on the book but from what I read about the movie after I finished the book it is not a fair comparison. For one thing the movie doesn't have two of the key characters that are in the book. Pendergast or Smithback while they play very important parts in the book were left out of the movie.

This novel gripped me from the first few pages. The characters are very interesting and the story is gripping and will pull you in. The Museum is a very scary setting for the darkness and evil that is waiting for you. If you are a fan of on the edge of your seat thrillers that will truly frighten you, give this book a try. I don't think you will be disappointed.

(Called back into the fray, Magiere and Leesil must do battle once again with the Noble Dead.)

(On par with Dhampir)

(A step up)

(Perfect title)

(A very good sequel)
This is the second book in Barb&J.C. Hendee vampire series with Magiere Leesil the fearless vampire hunters, now for a bit of the story.

We start back in the small fishing town of Miiska, Magiere and Leesil have rebuilt their inn after the battle with the noble dead, just as life was getting better they receive a message from the near by city of Bela, here they will face new perils in the form of new noble dead as well as the evil blast from the past, we also see Leesil learning more about his past and also being hunted by elvin assassins, with Magiere we see her learning more about her powers as the Dhampir and the new mortal threats to her life and lives of her friends.

As with the first story we see a well written novel, filled with action adventure and great characters, this book is a bit better than the first, i'm just about to start book three and i'm hoping it will be as good if not better the the previous two.

I found Thief of Lives to be about on par with the first book in the Noble Dead series. The story picks up not long after the end of Dhampir, with Magiere and Leesil living their version of domestic bliss, running their rebuilt tavern. As you might guess, that doesn't last long: the mysterious Welstiel sets the wheels in motion for another confrontation with the undead. In Thief of Lives, we learn more about our characters, especially Leesil and, yes, Chap. We find out a bit more about what makes Welstiel tick. And, we're treated to some good scenes of suspense and general vampire hunting mayhem!
Still -- the pacing is a bit languid for my taste. There is a bit too much time spent on the trio of undead characters. Some of the other character-based scenes become repetitive as well: we're given too many internal monologues revealing feelings of which we, as readers, are already aware. But the battles between dhampir and undead are sharp and compelling, there is some pretty good mystery at work, and the relationship between Magiere and Leesil remains interesting, always on the edge of...something.
My reviews tend to focus on the negative, but I'm already looking for the next book in the series, so that should tell you something. Yes, I enjoyed Thief of Lives, even if I can throw tomatoes from the peanut gallery. (Hey, at least my mixed metaphors make a good stew!)

Thief of Lives is the follow up to Barb and JC Hendee's Dhampir, which centers on the beautiful Vampire Hunter Magiere, her Half Elf companion Leesil, and their extraordinary dog, Champ.

This story picks up about two months after that last book ended, which Magiere and Leesil reopening their inn after the fire that consumed it in the climax of the last book. The town is in dire straits due to the destruction of their main warehouse, and commerce is dwindling, which is slowing strangling their economy. An opportunity to make some money for the town has presented itself at the city of Bela, across the sea. Magiere is reluctantly forced out of retirement, as Bela's frustrated city council searches her out for her help. Some of Bela's most notable and wealthy are being savagely murdered and all signs point to one of the "noble dead" being the culprit.

This novel is pleasant surprise in that it is an upgrade over Dhampir in nearly every area. The characters are far more developed. Leesil and Magiere are more actualized than the first and especially Leesil is more explored in this novel than the last. Even the dog Champ, is more cultivated! I found the tension that was present between Leesil and Magiere far more believable and understandable in this novel as well. Also, with the development of the character's persona comes a refinement of their mythos.

Some of this elaboration is undoubtedly due to the authors' holding back on the first novel in order to continue the mystery. However, there is real narrative maturation here in both writing skill and story.

The Hendee's have take the Vampire mythology and put their own brand on it, and have even carved their own niche from the Buffy the vampire slayer/Bloodrayne/underworld "girl power" genre. Magiere is unenthusiastic about her role, even downright unwilling, but she has demons to kill within herself and she is trying to exorcises. Not only that, but she isn't quite she WHAT she is. That mystery as well as secrets from Leesil and Champs past are a big part of this installment.

Thus, Thief of Lives does not fall into the "filler" category that so many second novels do, or the let down after the first. The Hendees have established a strong foundation upon which to build upon and they took a step in the right direction with this novel. Thief of Lives is an enjoyable read. It may not be Tolkien, but that is part of what makes it compelling. What it does, it does well.

This book is great. The title fits it so perfectly! I reccomend this to anyone who likes your typical fantasy novels, for not only does it deal with vampires, but all sorts of fantasy stuff.
This second installment of the series started with Damphir is every bit as good if not better than the first. The trio of half-elf, half vampire and Spirit possessed dog continue to grow as characters as they are forced by circumstances to live up to the role of vampire hunting team that they first created simply as a way to swindle gullible peasants. Good Fantasy with a strong and increasing stable plot line.
On the heels of DHAMPIR, Barb and J.C. Hendee's acclaimed Fantasy debut, comes THIEF OF LIVES, the new novel featuring Magiere and Leesil, Slayers of the Undead....

Magiere the dhampir thinks that her nights of hunting vampires are over. After settling down in her newly adopted village of Miiska— now vampire-free, thanks to her and her half-elf partner, Leesil — she looks forward to quiet days tending to her tavern.

But far away in the capital city of Bela, a prominent councilman's daughter has been found dead on her own doorstep... and all signs point to a vampire. Knowing that the battered and burned village of Miiska could use an infusion of cash, Bela's town council offers a generous bounty to the dhampir if she will slay their vampire. Magiere resists, wanting nothing more than to forget her past and ignore her half-vampire nature. Only Leesil can persuade Magiere to follow her destiny— before more innocent lives are claimed by darkness.

(Best Horror Movie Ever!)

(Got to bring it up!)

(This sucks...)

(The Best Slasher Movie of All Time!)
This is the best horror movie of all time. The gorgeous graphics the PSP gives the movie is outstanding. I am a true fan of Halloween. I own them all, including number 3, which has no reference of Michael Myers. I love the fact that I can watch my favorite movie on the go! Granted this Halloween isn't graphic like its prequel done by Rob Zombie, the bone chilling factor of having someone stalk you without you knowing is scary enough to freak the heck out of me now as it did when I first saw it in the late 80's. Awesome Movie!!!
I gotta write a five star review to eliminate that dumb review at the bottom, I meen even for the PSP this has got to be the best horror film of all time.
This is the worst movie of all time. I rented it once, and let me tell you, I almost tossed my PSP at the wall. It was just way to scary. It was scary+100. My sister almost peed her pants when she saw it. If you have any mind at all, don't buy(that is, of course, you're still wearing diapers).
Halloween, the original slasher film holds up today and still out-scares every movie hollywood puts out.

(Nothing Shocking)
I'm not too impressed with the second installment in the Shellshock series. The moment a quick time event popped up on the screen, I said to myself, "this is not good." There are moments when an enemy will attack you and you are required to press the WASD keys in proper order to fend off the attack. I hate this feature!

The gun play is pretty good most of the time, but there are times when aiming can be a hassle (your reticle sort of sways in the wind). Graphics are decent, but nothing to write home about. The horror element is there (somewhere). For example, as you're moving about various buildings you can hear babies crying. Then all of a sudden you hear a loud bang and the crying stops. A bit disturbing.

There's no online activation and the only DRM I can see is a disc check. This is a situation where you definitely are getting what you pay for ($30). No multiplayer component, it's all about the single player experience. Unfortunately, you don't get much.

War is hell, and the ShellShock franchise delivers gamers to the deepest circles of this hell with the series' second brutal and twisted psychological first person shooter experience. At the height of the Vietnam War, a covert ops cargo plane carrying a top-secret consignment known only as 'Whiteknight' is lost over the deepest, uncharted jungles. Special Ops soldiers are immediately dispatched to the scene to retrieve the top secret shipment and one-by-one they disappear without a trace ... until one month later, one of them suddenly walks out of the jungle. Crazed and deranged, something in the jungle had ripped out his humanity, poisoning his soul. Something in the darkness had driven him mad ... and followed him out. Taking the first-person war game and turning it on its head, Shellshock 2: Blood Trails places you in a war where fear takes on a whole new meaning.

(installs SECUROM spyware on your PC)

(Very fun, very dumb. If you like the original, you'll like this..kind of)

(Good, but not AS Good.)

(Awesome Game, Long Live the Bunnyhop)

(Serious Sam meets Satan)
Painkiller OVERDOSE installs the Securom spyware program on your machine. To get rid of it Google trashreg and unlocker, two programs that can get Securom off your machine. On top of this OVERDOSE has the most annoying voice-over of any game I've ever played! I uninstalled it after about a half-hour, your character babbles like a teenager trying to sound cool constantly, it gets grating real fast. Avoid this game.
Simply, this is another chapter of Painkiller. Those of us that loved the original, and loved BOH, will also like this one.

Basically, Painkiller has no real story (it has a silly one), and you run around as fast as you can shooting things. I probably played the original over 100 times through over the years, and the BOH follow on, about 50. This one is much the same, although it takes some time to reorient yourself into Painkiller thought

The dynamics are almost the same as all PK games, and you'll have to take a bit of time to get yourself into it. Once you're acclimated, its a barrel of laughs. If you take it too seriously, you're missing the point of the PK franchise. Lots of dumb enemies, lots of twisted weapons, lots of silly ammo. And then its over..

Don't overthink this one. Its a goofy way to spend some spare time. Its not serious art (bioshock) or great strategy and story (stalker, half life series), its just a shooter

I personally found Painkiller Overdose to be MUCH more challenging than the first ones, but also considerably less enjoyable. Belial (Your Character) Isn't developed very well, and becomes cheesy/annoying VERY quickly. The weapons are also changed from the original, and more nice/flashy, but ultimately unnecessary ones are added.

I personally would have been far happier running around as Daniel Garner again, with my smaller but more streamlined arsenal from the first two.

However, No such luck... The game is still challenging though, and if you can ignore Belial's ridiculous babbling, it can still be quite fun. At least until the end Boss, who is just ridiculous in his final stage.

Excellent gameplay, graphics and sound. Very reminiscent of other fast paced quake 3 like games such as return to castle wolfenstein.
Take the best parts of Painkiller, throw in Serious Sam gameplay and humor, mix in a half-demon, half-angel, and you get Painkiller Overdose. While it is really just a painkiller add-on, it freshens up the tried and true formula with some unique weapons, new character, and very cool enemies. I have not finished the game yet, but so far I am loving it. I have played through 4 levels. The first level gives such a sense of fire and brimstone, it is palpable. The enemies feel more like the hordes of Hell than any game I've played. I like the familiarity of Painkiller, but I am glad they have de-emphasized the hop-skip-jump routines to find hidden holy items. The homage to Serious Sam is great as I was a huge fan of that series. I give it a high fun factor. If you are looking for a deep plot with puzzle solving, this is not the game for you.
The critically-acclaimed and award-winning FPS franchise is back! Packed with tons of fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled single player and multiplayer action, Painkiller Overdose brings with it 6 innovative new demonic weapons, mind-bending physics, lightning-player maps, over 40 demented and sickly-twisted monsters from Hell and gigantic end bosses that will blow your mind! New End Bosses of colossal statures standing guard over Hell's crumbling domain and the entrances to the other realms! A revitalized commitment to multiplayer, with a series of stats tracking features and game server options intended for a more intense multiplayer experience. Multiplayer compatibility with original Painkiller multiplayer maps and game modes! Endless hours of gameplay with both single player and multiplayer gameplay.
