Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (movie from my childhood) 『I seen this movie when I was 4 years old and I have been haunted by it every since. I'm so happy I got to see the movie now that I am an adult and can truly see what a masterpiece this film was.』
(Fun stuff.) 『The Beast with Five Fingers (Robert Florey, 1946)
1946 was the last year Peter Lorre worked for Warner Brothers, and his parting from the company was career suicide; while he remains one of the world's most famous actors, endlessly imitated and paid tribute, from his parting with Warner Brothers until his death in 1964, Lorre picked up only the odd film here and there (though some of them are truly excellent) and some TV guest appearances. Thus it is that The Beast with Five Fingers is something of a bittersweet film for the nostalgia buff; it is a great Lorre performance, but it marked the beginning of the end.
Set in the late nineteenth century in northern Italy, The Beast with Five Fingers is the tale of Frances Ingram (Victor Francen), a pianist with a rather motley crew of eccentrics living with him. There's Bruce Conrad (Robert Alda), a smooth con man who's in love with the old pianist's companion/nurse Julie Holden (Andrea King). This wouldn't necessarily be so bad, but read "companion/nurse"as a rough equivalent to "trophy wife" here. Then there's Hilary Cummins (Lorre), a crackpot who's collected a great number of very old books on all sorts of topics while looking for... something, we're never quite sure what. Conrad, con man that he is, is in a state of detente with the local police commissioner, Castano (J. Carrol Naish); they seem to cordially despise one another. Until, that is, the old man finally kicks the bucket, setting off a nasty inheritance battle between Julie and the pianist's blood relations, Raymond (Charles Dingle) and Donald (John Alvin) Arlington. But all of that is beside the point; the real plot here is that the dead pianist's hand was removed, and is now the leading suspect in the murders of some of the inhabitants of the house.
It's your basic potboiler horror flick, really, with the expected silly ending, snatches of overacting, and all the other things that make so many genre horror films cheesy. But the reason to watch the film is Hilary's descent into madness, played to pitch-perfection by Lorre. (Contrasting this with his role in Mad Love is a great way to examine how much effect a good script can have on a movie.) It's otherwise watchable, if a bit dumb, but Lorre's performance raises it above the level it would normally be. ***½ 』
(Peter Lorre is indeed one of a kind!!) 『A superb and atmospheric early horror film with fine acting, super effects, tight script and haunting soundtrack. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the fantastic horror score by the great Max Steiner. Lorre is in top form and the severed hand effects(in most cases)easily stand up against 1991's Addams Family 'Thing' effects.
Worth a watch just for the magnificent Mr. Peter Lorre's delivery of the single line "It was the hand I tell you!!!"』
(Kind of silly, but entertaining) 『If not for Peter Lorre, this movie might be too silly to sit through. But Lorre turns in a grand performance, along with G. Carroll Nash as the detective.
If you can not laugh when 'THE HAND' starts crawling around, then you are indeed a serious horror movie fan!
Recommended for Lorre's performance.』
(Give Peter Lorre A Hand!!) 『This is a well-titled, but bizarre horror film from Warner Bros, a studio not known for producing horror films. Victor Francen stars as a renowned pianist living in one of those dark creepy movie mansions/castles. One hand is useless, so he uses his other hand to play. He relies heavily on his nurse, Andrea King, shuns his secretary, Peter Lorre, and sometimes seeks the company of Robert Alda who helped adapt the music for one-handed playing. When Francen dies (violently) and leaves his estate to his nurse, this sets off a series of strange events as everyone is terrorized by his disembodied hand!!
Sound bizarre? Well the film certainly is strange, establishing a foreboding mood early on and then taking the story in"unusual"directions. The characters are not well defined, especially the nominal leads Alda and King. It's one of those films where the characters need a slap to the head since they act so stupidly at times (or maybe it's the writers who should have been slapped around a bit). Only Peter Lorre really establishes a presence and performance here, going all the way in his characterization of the decidely strange secretary. It's perfect casting for the role and he capitalizes on it.
Director Robert Florey does establish some mood and atmosphere, but the outright silliness and illogic of the whole story hurts the film. It's fun to watch at a certain level, but with a better script and director it could have been a much more effective chiller.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Hilarious Comedy) 『This movie is deservedly a classic, but to me it's one of the great comedies of all time. I saw it in the theater when it was released, since on TV. I first saw it with 2 Catholic close friends. They were terrified. But when Linda Blair's head started spinning around, I just could not stop laughing. They looked at me and wondered, "What's wrong with him?" There are films I find really scary, most of which my wife is too afraid to watch (Hitchcock's Psycho, Jaws, Halloween, Alien), but The Exorcist always makes me laugh.』
(Scariest Movie..) 『Scariest movie yet Inaccurate and Offensive(antiCatholic-nasty scene) loosely based on a true story about a boy many years before. Lots of profanity and vomit, Yet yes it is very Creepy and Scary.』
(The scariest movie ever, reviewed on the scariest night of the year) 『Well, considering it's Halloween night and this is the last of my "31 Reviews For 31 Days of October" review-fest, I figure I'll end this countdown with one of the absolute most well-known horror movies of all time, and certainly one of the most horrifying, "The Exorcist". Although many quotes, stunts and ideas from this movies have been taken and parodied ("The power of Christ compels!" comes to mind.), this movie nevertheless has the power and terror that basically defines the horror movie genre.
Watching "The Exorcist" all the way through is more like an experience than watching a movie. For one thing, the general idea of the movie is a plausible concept, and having been to a paranormal speaker just last night, who ironically spoke of and showed a video of an exorcism for which she witnessed, this sort of thing is not entirely impossible, although it almost never happens. I don't want to dwindle on this part too much, but also regarding that I'm Roman Catholic, this movie definitely hits home with me.
But back to the movie itself. It kicks off with a scene that takes place in Egypt if I'm not mistaken, on an excavation dig with the foreign scenery setting a mood and atmosphere that carries throughout the whole movie. Starting the movie like this is an interesting idea, and a concept that hasn't been done too much by other movies, even though it works here. The acting throughout is phenomenal, alongside the special effects, which goes without saying. The whole movie plays out like a terrifying, dark, atmospheric nightmare and never loses its intensity or interest, even in the slower moments. I must say, even though I personally sometimes find it tedious to sit through a movie that goes over two hours long, I think "The Exorcist" definitely has the hudspah (spelling?) to make it pull you in for the whole thing. As dark and terrifying as this movie is, it most certainly still packs a brilliance, alongside talented writing and directing that makes it worth the watch.
In short, "The Exorcist" is a film that's just as horrifying as it is both groundbreaking and vastly interesting. Such a movie deserves to go down as one of the greatest horror movies ever made, and considering I'm a guy who's seen countless horror movies, I agree with that statement. Well, the review's about up, but for those that haven't seen such a heart-pounding, groundbreaking, interest-stirring movie yet, this is very highly recommended. And before you sleep, say some prayers just for safety!!! Happy Halloween, everybody, I'm off to smother myself in Halloween candies, household props and going around all evening in my pajama pants. Thanks for the time, and peace.』
(Try sleeping at night after watching this . . .) 『It's really hard to name every single horror film that's ever been made. Many deal with zombies, ghosts, serial killers, classic monsters like Frankenstein, and mutated species. Some are classic, others are mediocre, and several are ridiculous and dull. Out of all of them, only a few have been recognized as the greatest in the genre. The Exorcist, Psycho, and The Shining have been rightfully praised for the terrors that they have conveyed. Dozens of others have never topped them ever since they were released. While my favorite horror film of all time is actually The Shining, I can perfectly understand why The Exorcist is considered the best. First of all, is has an unusual storyline (back in the 70's, at least). Instead of ghosts or zombies or werewolves, it's demon possession. The body of a young girl is being controlled by a spirit from Hell. With every medical analysis being inconclusive, the mother has one last chance of bringing her daughter back. She brings in Father Karras, who has a crisis of faith, and Father Merrin, who has seen this sort of prediction when he visited Iraq.
So why is it that this is considered the scariest movie of all time. Well, the shock effects may be outdated to some, but it's the eerie atmosphere and the thought of being possessed that makes it truly horrifying. The silent, quick shots of the infamous "Captain Howdy" are also an addition to this ghoulish nightmare. You don't need loud and abrupt music or hardcore gore, all you need here is a creepy environment, a slow pace, and some fiendish dialogue from Regan/the demon. Mind you, there are some great modern horror films (such as Rec, The Evil Dead series, and the original Thai version of Shutter), but The Exorcist, The Shining, and Psycho are in top form when it comes to scaring the s*** out of you. The Exorcist, especially, is one that is truly scary because of its controversial subject matter. The finest, no doubt.

Adapted by William Peter Blatty from his controversial bestseller, this shocking 1973 thriller set an intense and often-copied milestone for screen terror with its unflinching depiction of a young girl (Linda Blair) who is possessed by an evil spirit. Jason Miller and Max von Sydow are perfectly cast as the priests who risk their sanity and their lives to administer the rites of demonic exorcism, and Ellen Burstyn plays Blair's mother, who can only stand by in horror as her daughter's body is wracked by satanic disfiguration. One of the most frightening films ever made with a soundtrack that's guaranteed to curl your blood,The Exorcistwas mysteriously plagued by troubles during production, and the years have not diminished its capacity to disturb even the most stoical viewers. Don't say you weren't warned!--Jeff Shannon』 『The story of a young girl who has been possessed by the devil and a priest is called in to perform an exorcism. 11 added minutes including the legendary Staircase Spider Walk, an ominous Medical Diagnosis scene and more.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Much Accomplished With A Lean Budget.) 『Sal DeVito (J. J. Barry), finished with New York City's problems, and separated from his spouse, has moved to Stowe, Vermont where he maintains his occupation as illustrator, encouraged by a new romantic involvement with local painter and gallery owner Jackie (Carole Shelyne). Unfortunately, soon after his arrival in the Vermont town, Sal kills a young girl who runs in the path of his auto, arousing the animus of her grandfather with whom she lived, who then places a curse upon Sal, as seen when action opens, the camera focussed upon the old man's mouth as he utters a lengthy malediction. After Sal and those close to him begin to suffer from a series of mysterious misfortunes, a friend of Jackie's suggests employing a local sorceress, Adrianna (Kim Hunter), to raise the spell, and a confrontation inevitably ensues between the Forces of Good and of Evil. This is the basis for a plot developed skillfully by director Martin Goldman who, alongside the two principal players, is responsible for a script that is cobbled as the film is being shot, resulting in a naturalistic feeling with no lapse of interest to a viewer. A high level of intensity characterizes the acting by the entire cast, with the laurels not unexpectedly going to the accomplished Hunter, who cunningly creates her role as a latter-day shamaness within a mundane setting. Cinematographer Richard E. Brooks offers a wide gamut of techniques, including frequent use of a hand held camera and effective slow tracking, while his creative use of angles and lighting produces a quality akin to cinema verité. Solely filmed on location and with little available funding, a good deal is achieved in an aesthetic sense, although shallow production values are evident in a work wherein the teeming avenues of tourist choked Stowe provide an ironic and surreal background for matters of witchcraft.』

(Watch Them All) 『While the first is still the best, all the others are just as fun to watch. It's great to see how many times the writers could go back and forth in time to come up with the next movie. And at the price of the box set each movie is a bargain so grab the set and have an ape fest!』
(Amazing!) 『This product is AMAZING! I'm not going to describe all of the different movies in the set because that has already been done to death in these reviews. But if you even slightly like these movies when they were on TV you have to get this collection. They are even more amazing, and if you watch them one right after another you will get into the movie a lot better. They did a very unique circle with the movies. You start with the first movie, and then watch each of the others, each movie starting off in the EXACT same spot the previous move left off. When you get to the last movie is leaves of at the exact spot where the first movie started. LOL so it gives you this amazing feeling of time travel, and if you were to watch this collection over and over again you would be stuck in the time loop yourself. When you watch the last movie and see how it leaves off you are tempted to insert the first moive and finish it... oh wait, the first movie starts it.... or does it? Its so amazing.』
(A classic and four lesser sequels.) 『The five Planet of the Apes movies start out with a classic (No. 1), and end with an unintentionally hilarious 5th film. One can see, when viewing the films in order, that each successive entry in the series had a lower budget, and fewer big stars (Going from Charlton Heston to Paul Williams is quite a leap into D-list territory). Still, as a (relatively) cohesive story arc, the series holds up despite its obvious shortcomings, and has become a sci-fi standard.
The DVD transfers are generally good (the first film being the best by far), although special features are minimal (the previously-produced documentary with Roddy McDowall, and theatrcal trailers).
But for a budget price, this is a still a no-brainer purchase for sci-fi fans. And for those who want to forget the hideous Mark Wahlberg remake.
』
(Go Bananas over this set :)) 『With all the reviews of each film all over the place, I will make short and simple. Planet of the Apes is the best of the whole series, however the other films, Beneath, Conquest, Escape and Battle for the Planet of the Apes all are worth watching. They might not be as good as the first, but they all have their own merits. Obviously the budgets sank as the series moved on, but they are all entertaining in their own way. To me it was worth owning the entire set, you get the whole series, widescreen, THX , super sharp transfers and a bonus disc for under 40.00. Even if I didn't like one of the movies Id still get the whole set , which is what I usually do if I enjoy most of the movies of a set (3 out 4, 2 out of 3,etc) For those who haven't gone Blu-Ray this is still the best set to get. In closing, yes Planet of the Apes is the superior film of the whole bunch but I think the rest all hold up well with great acting, stories&the constant battle of man vs ape, plus the endings are incredible. To me the whole set is worth getting...』 『Studio: Tcfhe Release Date: 11/04/2008 Run time: 494 minutes』

Haven't watched our old Matrix DVD to see if it's the same way yet. It's weird and I don't like it but, since we'll only watch them once a year at most and they were cheap.....I don't care I guess.』
(Could have been better) 『I won't go into detail, since others have taken care of that. I'll just say I'd have been a lot happier with this finale if Morpheus hadn't been whittled down to a lame, near-cameo role. The inscrutable guru of movie one is just barely more than a flunky here. He's also put on a lot of weight (but that doesn't stop Travolta). It just doesn't cohere as well as it might if the characters had more continuity. Neo, Smith and Trinity are all understandable, but Niobe seems to have been stuck in there mainly to replace Morpheus. What happened? The ending is more satisfying, tho.』
(Great end to the trilogy, ....... or is it?) 『Keanu is not given a majority of time in this movie, but there's plenty of great action! It all winds down to a satisfactory ending, but there's something about it that just makes me wonder if it's really over.....』
(Everything that has a Beginning, has an End) 『The stunning conclusion to the Wachowski brothers "Matrix" trilogy comes to life. Highly controversial at it's release, the film has since never quite redeemed itself in eyes of the fans of the series. As a side note, this film might recieve better reception as time goes on, much like "Alien 3" although this is simply speculation.
The film begins almost the second its predecessor ended, Neo is unconcious, with the he's-got-to-be-up-to-no-good Bane lying right beside him. The film almost immediately throws itself back into the computer world with the revelation that the Morovingian isn't quite done with our leather-clad heroes yet.
One of the most interesting aspects of the film is the extended focus on the people of Zion. It frequently breaks away from the main characters to focus on the less developed ones which were introduced in the previous movie. While the ominous buzzing of the machines comes ever closer, the people of Zion prepare for what they know will be their final battle. I particularly liked the development of Kid, a character only breifly touched upon in "Reloaded" gets a nice portion of the spotlight while defending Zion.
While humans and machines clash, Morpheus, Niobe and their crew come to aid in the battle at their home. Niobe's character undergoes much development during this period, proving her loyalty to the human race.
One of the films only weaknesses is the lack of focus on Neo and Trinity, who are completely absent for a large portion of the film. Their characters never really undergo any development, with the exception of an extremely powerful sequence toward the end.
The reason that Revolutions, in my mind, was a success was because of the ending. The Wachowski brothers don't waste time showing what occurs afterwards, they simply end the story, telling it the way they wanted to tell it. This is one of the things I really like about the brothers, they don't sell out on their vision and let the filmmaking norms taking over their story. They tell their story, not the story that the audience EXPECTS or WANTS to see, but the story THEY want to tell, which is what filmmaking is really about.
If you are a die-hard fan of the Matrix or just a person who has a tendancy to like deeply misunderstood movies, watch this.

(This is a perfect example of Capitalism.) 『What does Capitalism have to do with rating a movie? lets be real the first and origiinal movie the Matrix was excellent, if it was ended there we would all be still talking about! what is the Mtarix, however hollywood is about maximising profits, why not see how deep into your pockets we can go! they bring sub- stories and plot with only one thing in mind to confuse! i will not comment no more on this movie, i feel that most of you people don't really care what you watch as long as everyone is watching it too. This movie assinated this series completely and that is good. laterz folks.』 『Despite the inevitable law of diminishing returns,The Matrix Revolutionsis quite satisfying as an adrenalized action epic, marking yet another milestone in the exponential evolution of computer-generated special effects. That may not be enough to satisfy hardcoreMatrixfans who turned the Wachowski Brothers' hacker mythology into a quasi-religious pop-cultural phenomenon, but there's no denying that the trilogy goes out with a cosmic bang instead of the whimper that many expected. Picking up precisely whereThe Matrix Reloadedleft off, this 130-minute finale finds Neo (Keanu Reeves) at a virtual junction, defending the besieged human enclave of Zion by confronting the attacking machines on their home turf, while humans combat swarms of tentacled mechanical sentinels as Zion's fate lies in the balance. It all amounts to a blaze of CGI glory, devoid of all but the shallowest emotions, and so full of metaphysical hokum that the trilogy's detractors can gloat with I-told-you-so sarcasm. And yet,Revolutionsstill succeeds as a slick, exciting hybrid of cinema and video game, operating by its own internal logic with enough forward momentum to make the whole trilogy seem like a thrilling, magnificent dream.-- Jeff Shannon』 『Provocative Futuristic Action Thriller. (On a Raven's Wing) 『200 years after his death comes a collection of short stories that demonstrates the indisputable fact that there's no one like the one and only Edgar Allan Poe. The stories in On A Raven's Wing run the gamut from pointless to pretty creepy, but none has the spark of macabre genius of Poe.
The best stories in the book including "William Allan Wilson" "Challenger" "A Nomad of the Night" and "The Cask of Castle Island" reinterpret Poe's originals while preserving most of the original atmosphere. A few, like "The Tell-Tale Purr" and "Development Hell" add a dash of dark humor. Some of the stories fall flat, usually the ones that try to bring Poe himself in as one of the characters.

(Terrifying) 『As other reviewers have mentioned, the stories themselves aren't really as scary, but the illustrations are nightmare-inducing. I first read these when I was an impressionable, wee lass of 8 and they scared me to death and really changed my reading tastes. I'm a horror-junkie because of these books! Harold is the most unsettling of the tales and even now, 21 years of age and heading off to professional school in fall, I'm still freaked out by it. These books aren't just for kids. (Great Introductory Books for Scary Stories as an Oral Story Telling Tradition! Classic for a Reason) 『My opinion of Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones is about the same as the second (and first for that matter). The pictures remain the most disturbing aspect of the book...the rest makes a fine initiation for young readers into creepy, scary, spine-tingling urban legends, tales of terror, ect... I'm glad to be done with the series and while Girl isn't ready for these yet (she's basing not wanting to read it on the pictures alone), I'll happily check them out for her (or buy a boxed set) when the time comes (and I'm sure it will). I think once she gets past the pictures, she'll have no problem with the text, there's nothing she hasn't really encountered in one for more another in her reading or TV watching over the last 9 years...and since we frequently watch shows about urban legends and ghosts, I doubt much here will shock or upset her. Why would anyone with any common sense of decency allow any child to read about killing dogs, children getting a gun to scare off a ghost, and an adult KILLING A CHILD slowly&painfully because of grudge by using a "voodoo" type spell for revenge. What is wrong with the man who wrote these books? My opinion is that Mr. Schwartz is a disturbed and depraved person and he should seek help - not write childrens books. Even more is wrong with the reviewer who decided these disgusting and morally void stories were appropriate for young children. It seems to me that Mr. Schwartz gets his thrills by taking away the innocence of a young and naive audience. I hope he's happy with the psychological damage he is responsible for.
