customer 's review (monstamash relation?)
(great classic)
(It's (almost) alive!)
(Great for nostalgia, but a little dated)
(Let's Party) just ok film which is the 1&only w/ the pet blob in its dog house brief scene near the end; dont know if it inspired the song monstermash or vice versa, still, unknown. I admit I didn't open it yet, but I grew up watching Rankin&Bass animated shows and enjoy them so I'm sure I'll like this too! Remember on Halloween when someone invariably handed out a pack of crayons or a small bag of pennies to trick-or-treaters? You were probably a little confused at first, then a little disappointed, but you probably used the crayons or spent the pennies anyway. Mad Monster Party is like Halloween crayons to me - not very exciting but certainly adequate.
The Pros: The sets and character designs are awesome - very detailed with some mod 1960's touches (the Monster's Mate rocks a pair of white go-go boots). The send-ups of classic Hollywood monster movies can be quite funny and clever, and the tongue-in-cheek nihilism of the ending makes for a memorable finale. In terms of the image and sound quality of the DVD, nothing seems to have been lost in the transfer from the original print and in fact may have enhanced the original audio/video experience.
The Cons: In between the gags and humorous references lies filler in a plot costume. In my opinion, the plot here is a distraction - Dr. Frankenstein is ready to retire and chooses his nebbishy nephew Felix as his heir. The monsters disapprove and in a series of alliances and betrayals attempt to exterminate the interloper. It's all rather uninteresting to me and kind of superfluous as the best parts (the titular party where a skeletal band plays and a monstrous food fight takes place; the picnic in the jungle where Dracula unsuccessfully tries to ambush Felix) seem to happen extraneous to the plot. In addition to the weak plot, the songs are tolerable but not very memorable. I doubt you'll be humming these tunes after the credits roll.
If you happen to find this DVD in your Halloween goodie bag, appreciate it for what it is, have a little chuckle, groove to the retro score, then gorge on the fat and calories of richer Halloween treats like Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. It had been many years since I'd seen this film--I saw it on its release and I remembered it as being one of my favorite Rankin-Bass movies. And there are some genuinely fun sections, especially the semi-sarcastic moments (the character of Francesca has a lot of these). But by and large the film doesn't hold up as well as, say, Rudolph; and I must admit that both "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "The Corpse Bride," inspired by "Mad Monster Party," are better films. The songs here are especially not very inspired--though the MUSIC (mostly in the score) is a real trip. It's still worth seeing the skeletal Beatles sing "The Mummy," and the Zombie Birdmen are well worth watching. Karloff is given relatively little to do besides provide an atmospheric voice, and Phyllis Diller is particularly poorly used, reigned in and controlled by the need to keep the film appropriate for children. Yetch, the blue-faced Peter Lorre character, is still fun--but I was surprised at how much I preferred the scenes between Felix and Francesca (which are genuinely funny) to the monsters!
So it's worth a peek for the sake of nostalgia, and certainly everyone who is a fan of Tim Burton ought to have this in their collection. But despite even Burton's own clear admiration and debt to this Rankin Bass classic, I have to say that Burton is far better. Mad Monster Party was released on March 8, 1969 and is one hour and thirty-four minutes long. Monsters included in this movie are the Frankenstein Monster (throughout the movie he his called Fang), the monster's mate (voiced by Phyllis Diller), Dracula, Werewolf, the Mummy, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Creature (as in the Creature From the Black Lagoon), The Invisible Man, Quasimodo or the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and King Kong (King Kong is referred to It throughout the movie). We have the mad scientist, Baron Boris von Frankenstein (voiced by Boris Karloff), a cute female assistant, Francesca (voiced by Gale Garnett), and the Baron's nerdy nephew, Felix Flankin. The story goes that Baron Boris von Frankenstein is retiring at the head of the Worldwide Organization of Monsters and is choosing a new leader who will inherit his latest invention and all of his secrets to go with it. Unknown to the monsters, he has chosen Felix Flankin. Felix works in a drugstore and has allergies. When he gets the invitation he heads to the Isle of Evil. The monsters find out about the Baron's plan and try to eliminate Felix and Francesca. Francesca sends letter to It for help. In the end, Baron Boris von Frankenstein blows up the island with all the monsters on it and Felix and Francesca flee the island. At the closing, one has to wonders if Felix is also a creation. Mad Monster Party is a children movie and was thus geared to a child liken. This would be Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass full length motion picture. This movie is funny and even adults will have a laugh. Love the classic monsters Frankenstein, the Mummy, Dr. Jekyll, the Creature, Dracula, the Werewolf, and the Invisible Man? They're all here in this animated, 90-minute video--and so are the vocal talents of Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller. After discovering the secret of destruction, Baron von Frankenstein is retiring as head of the World Wide Organization of Monsters. He's handpicked his mortal nephew Felix to be his successor, and his fellow monsters are less than pleased. Even though Felix politely declines to carry on this family tradition, the monsters band together and double-cross one another in comic attempts to expel Felix from the group. The "Rankin/Bass Animagic process" of using stop-motion photography with three-dimensional figures makes this video a visual feast for animation buffs, but it is outdated compared to modern animation techniques. Humorous details, like the count looking into a mirror to comb his hair and seeing only his comb reflected, permeate the video and will have viewers chuckling out loud and on alert for potential missed laughs. This video is best for children from about 5 to 12 years old or adults who want to reminisce over a movie viewed in their childhood.--Tami Horiuchi Rerations < Mad Monster Party [VHS] >

(This CD delivers the shivers) First, this is a great disc for demonstrating that Henry Mancini might have come to have a very different public image if Blake Edwards had not happened along! Hardly anyone knows that he began on Universal horror films. Second, Amazon has given him composer credit for every track here, but he did only two of them.
These tracks are not from original soundtrack recordings, but the performances by Dick Jacobs's Orchestra are spirited and competent and sound great - very 1950s. There isn't much available, actually, which IS 1950s horror or sci-fi, so this is a welcome collection just in that regard. Where else would one find anything from THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN, for example? The sound quality is immediate and dry in the way of pop records of the time, so don't expect to hear anything at all here similar to the huge, lush, Romantic recordings done by Charles Gerhardt beginning in the 1970s.
Although all of the selections are enjoyable, my favorites are the Salter and the Stein CREATURE excerpts (Salter's ascending 3-note motive for the "gill-man" is particularly memorable), the ferocious Dracula theme from James Bernard's HORROR OF DRACULA (first Hammer Christopher Lee/Peter Cushing Dracula film) and William Lava's title for THE DEADLY MANTIS. In fact, if it were not for this disc, I probably would never have realized that Lava had done the MANTIS score, because it is only the name of Joseph Gershensen, the musical director, which appeared in the film's opening credits.
This CD has a very short running time - less than 29 minutes. That upset me at first - enough, in fact, that I wrote to Varese Sarabande to complain, but I've since changed my mind. The time is short because 1) the original LP was short as was typical during the 1950s and 60s, and 2) for this re-release, Varese has excised sound effects which opened and/or closed the musical selections. Those that remain are not, in my opinion, obtrusive.
Nothing underscores the tempo and mood of a movie like good soundtrack music. In this CD, the listener is treated to a wonderful mix of genre music from Science Fiction and Horror films. Orchestra conductor Dick James makes the most out of instrument placement, musical arrangement and stereo separation. If there is a downside, it can only be the absence of a theremin in"This Island Earth"and"It Came From Outer Space."Jacob opts for a jazz organ as an adequate substitute. The only other problem is the occasional squeaky chair noises the musicians make. But this tends to give the music a"live"sound rather than studio perfection. All in all, this is a wonderful collection that would accompany late night science fiction or horror reading perfectly. Rerations < Themes From Classic Science Fiction, Fantasy And Horror Films >

(Much of this shows its classical roots) This music is far and away beyond being exceptional! Messrs. John Morgan and William Stromberg have yet again exceed their past triumphs (I have no clue how they keep doing this!). Where to begin? Perhaps, with some numbers: five stars (out of five) for restoration, arrangement/re-arrangement, and cue selection/editing; five stars for presentation (conducting and orchestral performance); five stars for recording and mastering; and five stars for the fascinating (and huge!) CD booklet courtesy of Messrs. Bill Whitaker and John Morgan (the photo on page 33 is worth the price of admission alone!). With a new orchestral venue and technical crew, Mr. Stromberg has once again"come into his own,"acoustically speaking; the technical aspects of past recordings with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra has often been ham handed and uneven to the point of distraction. But the sound on these tracks is definitely 21st Century in quality! For those new to the neighborhood, just who are these two film composer folks--Frank Skinner and Hans J. Salter? Well, among other notable achievements, they saved many a Universal programmer during the late 30's and early-to-mid 40's (and very likely the studios's bacon to boot). When you view Universal's"second wave"of horror films even today, two things instantly grab your attention: the stunning photography and the inventive, pulsating music."(These) pictures were a great challenge, because ... before scoring they didn't seem to have much fright about them or cohesion either. They'd screen one of those pictures for us without the music, and it would be nothing. The challenge was in creating the sense of terror and suspense, and that is something music can do. All the pictures we saved for them!"Mr. Salter is quoted as saying in the CD booklet. Like many of the film scores of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Salter and Skinner's music transcends and is enormously superior to the films for which they composed. Until Messrs. Morgan and Stromberg got the bit in their teeth, Salter and Skinner's film scores had served to elevate fair-to middling films, but, in turn, it was the poor reputation of these movies that served to suppress vastly underrated film music! NONE of this music has ever been heard like it is presented here. The Universal studio orchestra had barely 40 players; this CD uses a full symphony. Also, Mr. Morgan was able to work extensively with Mr. Salter on restorations during the final year's of the latter's long life. To quote Mr. Salter once more from the CD booklet, the executives at Universal"never knew what they had"in the way of music talent. I strongly recommend that you don't make the same mistake. Latch on to this CD while you still can! Some music is great fun, either in itself or by personal associations or both. So when Marco Polo issued selections from the Salter/Skinner scores to"Son of Frankenstein,""The Invisible Man Returns,"and"The Wolf Man"back in 1995 and followed up with the complete film score to"House of Frankenstein"by Salter and Dessau, I could not keep from grinning foolishly hearing it, all the time realizing how good some of it really was.Now we have(8.225124) that treat us to 22 cuts from"The Ghost of Frankenstein,"8 from"Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror,"and a taste of three other films. The very generous program notes tell the whole story, with good lobbycard illustrations, of how this team worked together--one slept as the other worked--and I leave it to you to read all about it for yourself. As for the music itself, listen to the"Monster Theme"in the first suite and think if you will of how Wagner treated the"Dragon Leitmotif"in"Siegfried"to appreciate how classically grounded much of this music is in the tradition of Weber, Wagner, and even Richard Strauss. Not all of the selections are of high quality, but enough are to merit this offering a high rating.Happy and spooky listening, folks. Rerations < Universal's Classic Scores of Mystery&Horror >

customer 's review (The ultimate evil is about to be revealed!.)
(DVD Now!!)
(Towns are like people; some of them die of natural causes while others are murdered.)
(For other Phans)
(I actually liked it more than the original) Yes I consider this sequel to be even better than the first film, Phantasm 2 continues right after the first film ended and it never stops it has more action, blood and gore and it also has a faster pace. It seems like Don Coscarelli had a bigger budget and the same dark atmosphere is still there but it seems to be alot more fun this time around and it is possibly the best 80's horror sequel out there, only two cast members returned Angus Scrimm as The Tall Man and Reggie Bannister as Reggie, the original actor who played Mike did not return instead hes played by James LeGros some blond guy who was O.K. I guess. For the last 8 years of his life Mike Pearson (James LeGross) has been in a mental institution after the horrible events that happened in the past including the death of his older brother Jody he has also been getting psychic messages from a girl who warns him about The Tall Man who has returned and wants to kill Mike. He is soon released from the institution and is quickly reunited with Reggie as the only person who could help him out as they are soon back on the trail to get rid of The tall man, they both get some cool weapons including a quadruple barrel shot gun and a flamethrower along the way going from town to town, Phantasm 2 was a nicely shot film and shows how talented and under appreciated Don Coscarelli was the cinematography was stunning you also have some dark atmosphere while both characters visit some graveyards and mausoleums and this time the final showdown takes place in Perigord Cemetery Mikes character also has some creepy nightmares and warnings from this mysterious woman, this film also has some pretty neat action scenes including a much better car chase scene and a chainsaw battle with Reggie and one of the bad guys and the humor was also there it seemed to be influenced alot by Evil Dead 2. Reggie Bannister definitely stands out as the kick a** pony tailed ice cream vendor from the phantasm series and its always great seeing this guy do all these crazy stuff. There are also some new characters that get involved including a female hitch-hiker named Alchemy played by Samantha Phillips and a mysterious psychic woman who contacts Mike through his mind she also has a deadly encounter with those weird dwarfs and The Tall Man who kills a priest by using one of those silver balls his ear is chopped off and his head drilled into, The Tall Man has some great lines in this film as well "You think that when you die, you go to heaven?.YOU COME TO US!!!". As you will see in this film Don C. becomes more creative and adds alot more imaginative scenes to make this film into a more exciting and great sequel and the make up and gore fx have improved it also has a good twist ending as always. Anchor Bay decided to release both Phantasm 1 and 3 but they didn't bother with part 2 which is kind of ridiculous, I think its because of Universal Studios who still have the rights for this film. You can get a copy of this film however its only available on region 2 dvd from Amazon.co.uk its included in a boxset from Anchor Bay U.K. website check it out. I have seen this only on T.V. and I and my Horror fan friends love this movie. I hate Hollywood and their legal garbage. I don't care what needs to be done about putting this on DVD, just do it and make the Phantasm fans happy. The events of the first movie are a blur in the mind of Mike, who now finds himself being released from a mental ward after his initial run-in with The Tall Man. Enter Reggie, beloved Ice Cream Truck Driver and survivor with holes in his memory, and things seem to be coming back into place. The only problem is that Mike wasn't made, that The Tall Man is still moving from town to own, and graveyards are still emptying. Everything keeps on keeping on - and then some.
So, what is The Tall Man? Nobody really knows. He appears and then people begin to die, and the cemeteries begin to fill. The bodies then start to vanish, and "things" begin to take their place. This is explored more in the 2nd movie, but the answers only bring about more questions. It's kinda beautiful in a strange sort of way, too.
While the first Phantasm is the one people really remember, the 2nd is really the one that took Phantasm to a new level by introducing it to special effects and to some rather frightening scenes. Anyone that has seen the movie will recall "the back worm" calling card that The Tall Man leaves behind, and anyone that has seen any of the other movies certainly remembers the flying pool balls. The one thing that this movie adds is gore, lots of gore, and a story that is just as vague (and somehow fulfilling) as the first one.
When you look at the movies, none of them really stick into any order and, in this one, ou certainly have some interesting problems that come with sequels. I personally found a few of the angles fun (and somewhat interesting) when they were approached, and I liked some of the things they did with Mike. In the first movie they tormented him to the point that it seemed like death would be kind. In the second the movie finds itself pressing onward and upward, taking anything that connects our two characters to "the real world" and using that against them.
While there are a lot of people that do not like this movie, I saw it years ago and have always had it on my mind. Sadly it is the only one of the series to not make it onto DVD, but that doesn't really speak on the quality of the movie. Like any of the Phantasm movies, they are acquired tastes so I can't say "it is for everyone." Still, what is?
Phantasms 1,3 and 4 are readily available in US format. There is a boxed set from Taiwan with 5 DVDs, including the absent Phantasm 2, available for a rather reasonable price (around $30). If the imbeciles at Universal won't sell the rights or release Phantasm 2 on DVD, then they can't complain if we get ripped off copies. The horror genre is pretty much known for having sequels that are far inferior to the original; of course there are always exceptions, but overall it's rare to find a sequel better than the original.
In my opinion Phantasm II is one of those very rare sequels that are better than the original. I enjoyed the original, but I'll be honest when I say I was never really a huge fan.
There is nothing wrong with the original, but I just couldn't get into it; where as with Phantasm II I was into it the whole movie. For starters I liked the characters more here in the sequel. That's not too say the characters weren't likeable in the original, they were but I just liked them more here.
I also thought Don Coscarelli did a better job at the pacing of the movie. Each scene moves the movie forward and I never really found any portion of the movie slow. Phantasm II for me, is a movie that moves really fast and feels a lot shorter than it actually is. Even I thought Phantasm had a great creepy feel I personally thought it was kind of boring at times.
The only problem I have with Phantasm II was the great and creepy atmosphere the original had, which is felt through out the movie isn't really here in Phantasm II.
There are plenty of suspenseful moments, but the sense of dread and doom isn't here like the original. But even though Phantasm II lacked that again I found it much better paced. As I sated before I did enjoy the original, but honestly it's not a personal favorite of mine despite the fact there was more I liked than disliked.
I might be in the minority here, but I really liked James LeGros as Mike. A. Michael Baldwin who played the part in the original as well as Phantasm III&Phantasm IV does an excellent job in his installments, but I personally liked James LeGros more.
Reggie Bannister is great once again as Reggie I liked him even more in the sequel. Both Bannister&LeGros really worked well together and make for one of the best teams in a horror flick.
Newly added to the cast is Paula Irvine as Liz and Samantha Phillips as Alchemy. Both women are excellent and provide many great moments. Angus Scrimm returns as The Tall Man and again provides a great performance and while he is creepy I did find him creepier in the original.
Phantasm II is one my favorite sequels and favorite horror movies in general and as I stated before I liked it more than the original, my only wish was that Phantasm II had the really creepy vibe the original had. That is for me the only flaw of the movie.
Phantasm II was a faced paced and exciting sequel; the fact that Don Coscarelli returned was the main reason for that. Too many sequels have different filmmakers and a lot of the times it just doesn't work as well.
Phantasm II is an excellent sequel with great pacing and likeable characters. This was a great continuation of the series. Hopefully soon we will get an SE DVD. With the recent re-release of Phantasm&Phantasm III maybe Universal will come around and give us fans a proper Region 1 release or possibly sell the rights to Anchor Bay.

customer 's review (I Still Don't Know What Happened...)
(Not the Funniest of the MST3K Series)
(Wild, alright)
(this is why MST3K was invented)
(COMEDIC GENIUS!) I own several episodes of MST3K - including Manos the Hands of Fate, which I think we can all agree is pretty horrid in terms of film making - but The Wild World of Bat Woman may be even worse. I ordered this as a Christmas present for my boyfriend and we were completely perplexed by this incoherent film. The bots didn't have much to work with...and that shows too. Bat Woman runs around in a freaky get up with a bat drawn on her chest and a strange doodad pinned to her bosom communicating with her beach bum bat girls. All the bat girls really like to do is shake it in the sand while listening to weird music. Seriously, is that a song about a rhinoceros? I mean, WHAT IS GOING ON? I recommend this flick to serious MSTies only! I am a HUGE fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and have been for close to 13 years. I love just about every episode, but this one I could have done without. The Wild World of Batwoman has to be one of the worst movies I have ever laid eyes on, but in most cases I can count on the bots and Joel (or Mike) to make fun of it in such a way that I can't control my laughter. While the riffing was, at times, funny, the movie itself just brought everything down.
I did not like this episode at all and will just have to make due with my collection of much funnier episodes.I do not blame the hosts of the show for the films horrible quality, I blame the movie itself for being so utterly terrible that not even MST3K could save it. At least they didn't make Batwoman fly! I wouldn't trust a studio hoist with a budget lower than the continental shelf. I enjoyed watching this drive-in feature which probably never got distributed too many blocks beyond the warehouse....or the Producer's garage. Katherine Victor glides into the various scenes with grace and sexiness - she's probably a tad over 42, but that's cool - for a woman who can fly she's got very well-toned legs...and so do her go-go dancer helpers...in fact if you wanna jump to the final scene, all the femininity reaches critical mass at a pool party. Hip character actor Steve Brodie gets tossed in, to his chagrin, and to the delight of the interns. Brodie is always good: Elvis Presley fans might remember him as Big El's nemesis in another sunny tunefest [this one's not a musical but I always wanted to use that phrase in a review], "Blue Hawaii", and about three years later, in "Roustabout". Gotta say, I've only played this movie sans Joel, Crow, and Tom, so maybe there's another star warranted. I'm still getting over their scholarly confab' which drowned out one of Little Richard's rarest songs in another light-hearted, [light-headed?], opus from the same era. I'm scared that I might miss a pearl of wisdom from Rat Fink. For those who don't know, the premise of MST3K is that they show incredibly bad movies which are then heckled by three guys in the audience who appear as 3 outlines, as if they're a few rows ahead of you in the theater. In most cases such people would be annoying but the point of MST3K is that the films are pretty much unwatchable and these guys are yelling the stuff we're all thinking, or wish we'd think of saying.
The real 'horror/charm' of MST3K is that some chuckle head at a studio greenlite this drek. The wonder is someone somewhere didn't look at the film and say "for the love of God stop!" but actually let it get to the screen. That having been said WWoB is and amazingly bad film by any standard and so is ripe for the lampooning delivered. As a film it is unwatchable. Plot, non-existant, constumes, pretty much street clothes except for batwoman herself and the villian , ratfink' who looks like "when zorro's go bad." Lighting? sound? props Heck blocking? non existant.
Villains fool the good guys with glued on mustaches and well you get the idea. This is a film that should have only been shown as an educational film entitled "Studio heads, don't let this happen to you!" but luckily for all of us, the guys at MST3K got the paws on it and the result is a gem. Batwoman and her chicks get down and partay in The Wild World of Batwoman. More curves than the Indy 500 in this one and a clever storyline with the protagonist Mr. Fink up to no darn good. The lavish costumes, hot babes go-go dancing and non-stop humor from the scientist (looking a lot like a certain Dr. Forrester) and his sidekick make this movie live up to its title. Jerry Lewis would be proud of this certain party! Nothing captures the peculiar pastiche of the pop-cultural zeitgeist likeMystery Science Theater 3000(MST3Kto fans). The formula is simple: subject a hapless temp worker, Mike Nelson, and his robot friends, Tom Servo and Crow, marooned in space to the worst B, C, even Z-grade movies imaginable and record the results. OnThe Wild World of Batwoman, they quip through a movie summed up best by Crow: "It looks like they just put a whole lotta movies in a blender and turned it on really fast!" The plot of the movie is hapless at best, inexplicably puncuated by bikini-clad "Batgirls" go-go dancing with guns (Mike quips: "That's 40 pounds of butt in pants with a 30-pound capacity."). The episode starts with a '50s educational short on student cheating that is so dour in tone that Tom wonders, "Is this Ingmar Bergman's first American movie?" In a sub-skit, Tom and Crow go mano a mano (or roboto a roboto) trying to out-shun each other: "I double shun you." Tom trumps with, "I shun you version 3.0 for Windows." The worse the movie, the better and more wacky theMST3Kepisode; never has subpar art ever inspired such heights of hilarity, andBatwomanis as bad as they come. Which means it's great. (". . . I guess you've noticed . . . that there's something a little strange with dad.")
(Close Encouters)
(Still Rocks after 30 yrs.)
(Fantastic precursor to modern Alien films-beautiful score) It was still in it's wrapping and came in multiple versions. The person I gave the gift to loved it! It came also with written commentary, posters, and extra info that was in great condition! Great decision to order this! This turned out to be a childhood favorite of mine. Back in the late 90's, I was obssessed with Spielberg's sci-fi classic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I admired the "brilliant" UFO designs, and the stunning performance of Richard Dreyfuss. Now, I can see that this film hasn't experienced any wear and tear, except maybe the commercial products that were used in the film. The special effects are still mesmerizing, the characters are still engaging, and even though I'm a fan of John Williams, the otherworldly music is still spectacular. Francois Truffaut steals the show as Claude Lacombe, but Dreyfuss is also worthy of mention. He plays Roy Neary, a man who has just had a "close encounter" with a trio of unidentified flying objects, and is becoming increasingly obssessive with a mountain-like shape that he seems to see in everyday objects. He should have won the oscar for this film, instead of "The Goodbye Girl."
Thank goodness that Star Wars, which was released in theaters in the same year, didn't overshadow this arguably important sci-fi film. It's one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made, and it one of my favorites alongside 2001: A Space Odyssey&John Carpenter's The Thing.
Grade: A I was stunned when i received this order to find it was so much more than I expected. I thought I had simply ordered a dvd of this wonderful movie. Instead, it was a three disc anniversary edition. So wonderful. Delighted and said so to the vendor. All my purchases with Amazon have been successful and as represented. We watched the 30 yr Anniversary Edition (1998 Director's Cut). I have the LaserDisc of the Special Edition which I last saw probably 15 yrs ago on our old 37" TV. This product on our new 47" HDTV just blew that away. Just like going to the movies except no popcorn. HDTV and Blu-ray are made for each other. This product includes all three releases of the movie including the original theatrical version. I don't own many movies, prefer to rent, but this and a few others will find a place in my blu-ray library. This review is for the Blu-Ray and it was viewed on a 42" Panasonic Plasma and BD35 Player.
I am 33 years old, and must confess that I had never seen this film in its entirety. As I am a huge fan of Alien and similarly themed films, I decided to make this the day to start my journey into this disc set. I watched the original "Theatrical" ed, and will update my review as I watch the others. PQ 3.5 and AQ 5. I was a little disappointed in the picture quality, which displays noticable grain. I've seen old films with better PQ.
First, the performance of the lead character was one of the most heartfelt I've ever seen. His desire to explore and be a part of this otherworldly miracle is just stirring. I absolutely loved the score. I think that music and scoring was, perhaps used much more effectively in this time period. The effects, even for an older film, were outstanding and with a little suspension of disbelief-convincing. The space ship at the end is just incredible, as is the return of the other "abductees". This is a great story, and masterpiece by Spielberg. Many elements are precursors for modern day Sci-Fi movies, series and themes in our cinematic experience. I am certainly glad to own this set, and look forward to watching the other versions another time, along with the special features. Anybody who has written him off because of his string of stinkers--or anybody who's too young to rememberThe Goodbye Girl--may be shocked at the accomplishment and nuance of Richard Dreyfuss's performance inClose Encounters of the Third Kind. Here, he plays a man possessed; contacted by aliens, he (along with other members of the "chosen") is drawn toward the site of the incipient landing: Devil's Tower, in rural Wyoming. As in many Spielberg films, there are no personalized enemies; the struggle is between those who have been called and a scientific establishment that seeks to protect them by keeping them away from the arriving spacecraft. The ship, and the special effects in general, are every bit as jaw-dropping on the small screen as they were in the theater (well, almost). Released in 1977 as a cerebral alternative to the swashbuckling science fiction epics then in vogue,Close Encountersnow seems almost wholesome in its representation of alien contact and interested less in philosophizing about extraterrestrials than it is in examining the nature of the inner "call." Ultimately a motion picture about the obsession of the driven artist or determined visionary,Close Encounterscomes complete with the stock Spielberg wives and girlfriends who seek to tether the dreamy, possessed protagonists to the more mundane concerns of the everyday. So a spectacular, seminal motion picture indeed, but one with gender politics that are all too terrestrial.--Miles Bethany The Collector's Edition (CE) represents Steven Spielberg's third version ofClose Encounters. Created in 1998, this sequence contains most of the judicial edits made for the Special Edition (SE) in 1980, speeding up Roy Neary's first contact with the UFOs and adding a scene of a discovery in the Mongolian desert. The Collector's Edition also reinstates the comical madness of Neary tearing up his own front yard, replaced in the SE by a scene where he breaks down in the shower; both scenes are restored in the CE. The SE's revised ending, featuring an extended scene inside the mothership is deleted. Rerations < Close Encounters of the Third Kind (The Collector's Edition) [VHS] >

(ANOTHER PRECIOUS EDITION)
(Great Movie.)
(Loved every minute)
(Lord of the Rings - Two Towers DVD) As in Fellowship, this is a great movie. Will be a classic. Although it varries from the book, it is a good movie in its own right. In this second film of the Lord of The Rings trilogy, the Fellowship continue their journey to defeat the Dark Lord Sauron and bring peace to Middle Earth.Much like the first film,The Two Towers finds our heroes fighting even more epic battles and meeting new and amazing characters. The acting is still spot-on and the special effects/enormous sets and overwhelming battle sequences are just as maginificently well done as always. This extended edition adds over 40 minutes of footage not seen in the theatrical version and not a second of it works against the overall film. Each new moment only proves this edition's superiority in both character development and action.Like the extended editions of the other two films,The Two Towers comes loaded with special features. There are two disks packed with hours of video documentaries on the design and construction of clothes/sets/weapons and behind the scenes of most of the film's battles and all processes involved such as choreography, editing and scoring. There are also hundreds of design sketches and stills that can be viewed individually. All in all,it's a superior edition in every way, providing much more thrills and adventure than the theatrical version. Again the extended version adds to the story. This version helps the Lord Of The Rings along by adding back scenes that add to the storyline and help get it closer to the book. I have both the movie release and this one and I, by far, like this one best! The Two Towers is a worthy follow-up to the Fellowship of the Rings. Acting, scenery, make-up, everything is top-notch, and Peter Jackson has truly brought Tolkien's masterpiece to life on the big screen. Whether you are a Tolkien fan, or simply enjoy an engrossing film experience, The Two Towers is definitely worthy of your attention. Thank you Mr. Jackson! The DVD arrived from the dealer ahead of schedule and the quality of the DVD was excellent. It was a used DVD, but there were no scratches on the disk and everything including the case looked like new. Not seen in theaters this unique version of the epic adventure features over 40 minutes of new and extended scenes integrated into the film by the director. DVD set consists of four discs with hours of original content including multiple documentaries commentaries and design/photo galleries with thousands of images to give viewers an in-depth behind-the-scenes look at the film. Frodo Baggins and the Fellowship continue their quest to destroy the One Ring and stand against the evil of the dark lord Sauron. The Fellowship has divided and now find themselves taking different paths to defeating Sauron and his allies. Their destinies now lie at two towers - Orthanc Tower in Isengard where the corrupted wizard Saruman waits and Sauron's fortress at Baraddur deep within the dark lands of Mordor.Running Time: 223 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: SCI-FI/FANTASY UPC: 794043650420 The extended edition ofThe Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ringwas perhaps the most comprehensive DVD release to date, and its follow-up proves a similarly colossal achievement, with significant extra footage and a multitude of worthwhile bonus features. The extended version ofThe Two Towersadds 43 minutes to the theatrical version's 179-minute running time, and there are valuable additions to the film. Two new scenes might appease those who feel that the characterization of Faramir was the film's most egregious departure from the book, and fans will appreciate an appearance of the Huorns at Helm's Deep plus a nod to the absence of Tom Bombadil. Seeing a little more interplay between the gorgeous Eowyn and Aragorn is welcome, as is a grim introduction to Eomer and Theoden's son. And among the many other additions, there's an extended epilogue that might not have worked in the theater, but is more effective here in setting upThe Return of the King. While the 30 minutes added toThe Fellowship of the Ringfelt just right in enriching the film, the extra footage inThe Two Towersat times seems a bit extraneous--weseemoments that in the theatrical version we had been told about, and some fleshed-out conversations and incidents are rather minor. But director Peter Jackson's vision of J.R.R. Tolkien's world is so marvelous that it's hard to complain about any extra time we can spend there. While it may seem that there would be nothing left to say after the bevy of features on the extendedFellowship, the four commentary tracks and two discs of supplements onThe Two Towersremain informative, fascinating, and funny, far surpassing the recycled materials on the two-disc theatrical version. Highlights of the 6.5 hours' worth of documentaries offer insight on the stunts, the design work, the locations, and the creation of Gollum, and--most intriguing for rabid fans--the film's writers (including Jackson) discuss why they created events that weren't in the book. Providing variety are animatics, rough footage, countless sketches, and a sound-mixing demonstration. Again, the most interesting commentary tracks are by Jackson and writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens and by 16 members of the cast (eight of whom didn't appear in the first film, and even including John Noble, whose Denethor character only appears in this extended cut). The first two installments of Peter Jackson's trilogy have established themselves as the best fantasy films of all time, and among the best film trilogies of all time, and their extended-edition DVD sets have set a new standard for expanding on the already-epic films and providing comprehensive bonus features.--David Horiuchi Rerations < The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition) >

(Babylon 5 - The complete TV Series)
(Bab 5 Complete Series)
(Great Sci-Fi Series!) I first was introduced to "Bab 5" in the middle of its second season and was hooked. My best friend and I were there, in front of the TV, every Sunday. Now you can get the entire 5-year series all at once for a great price. All of the performances are strong, without a weak, "Oh, not him again", one in the cast. Relationships between characters and their personalities are very well-defined. SPOILER ALERT! The first season mainly focuses on establishing all of the characters traits, habits, and cultures and how they are a help/hinderance to the space station's goals. Things really pick up in the second season when a complex, ongoing story starts. The series creator wrote the whole story out before even starting production or script writing and intended it to be told from start to finish in five seasons (120 episodes). He succeeded. It's like watching a 5-year mini-series (in the good way). I have managed to get my 70 year-old mother interested in it and she's seen only the first two episodes! This is one that takes a while to get through (unless you don't sleep for 80 days) but it's well worth the financial and time investment. I bought what was supposed to be a new boxed set, but DVDs for the 5th season arrived damaged. They appear to be scratched and skip, although there was no apparent damage to the shipping container. Now I have to figure out how to try to get them replaced. A fantastic series with believable characters and thoroughly enjoyable. The packaging is clean but a little bulky. On the other hand the discs come well protected. Truly worth the money. Great for all those Bab 5 fans who want to keep watching all of the exciting adventures of the Babylon 5 crew. It is great to see the entire B5 series in one collection. Even if you don't get the movie collection or the spin-off series, this is Babylon 5 at its core. (Though I do recommend watching the original pilot. It does a great setup for everything.) Even though Babylon 5 is labeled sci-fi, it is like no other sci-fi series. Babylon 5 does not live by "monster-of-the-week" episodes. Straczynski has a grand story, and every episode contributes something to that story. The fact that the story is not confined by the episode time is fantastic. Since the series is on DVD now, you can watch a complete story arc back to back, if you want. And unlike some other series I've watched, B5 does not get repetitive if you watch it back to back. Again, everything is progressing the larger story.
Some people may think that B5 is slow to get to the crux of the story. This is completely untrue. B5 has to build up the characters first. How can you see where the characters change when you don't know where they started from? Like any good author, Straczynski shows us the players of the story before he rocks their world with the plot. And these are some of the most memorable characters I have ever watched. My friends and I still quote lines from some of the more memorable encounters even though it's been a long time since I've seen the series (mainly because I didn't have my own copy.)
If you're tired of "monster-of-the-week" shenanigans, like a grand all-encompassing stories, and characters that you can relate to no matter what side they're on, B5 is a series for you. The epic sci-fi series Babylon 5 was a unique experiment in the history of television. It was effectively a novel for television in five seasons, consisting of 110 episodes with a clear beginning, middle, and end. The first season introduces the main characters, headed this year by Commander Jeffery Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) and Security Chief Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle), and familiarizes the audience with the unique environment of a five-mile-long space station in the year 2257. The first episode, "Midnight on the Firing Line," plays at a breathless pace, introducing Commander Susan Ivanova (Claudia Christian) and establishing the conflict between the Narn and Centauri races as represented by their ambassadors, G'Kar (Andreas Katsulas) and Londo Mollari (Peter Jurasik). B5 hits warp speed with a run of exceptional episodes building to the season finale. The two-part "Voice in the Wilderness" has Mars breaking into open revolt against Earth and the discovery of a "Great Machine" on the dead world Epsilon 3. Referencing 1950s sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet, the story leads to the superb time-travel-based "Babylon Squared." Season finale "Chrysalis" proves more than just the usual television cliffhanger, placing Minbari ambassador Delenn in conflict with her ruling Grey Council and forcing on her a decision that laid the groundwork for Babylon 5's eventually becoming a great love story. Delenn's future love interest, Captain John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) arrived on Babylon 5 in the first episode of season 2, "Points of Departure." The show marked the handing over of command of B5 to Sheridan from Commander Jeffery Sinclair, actor Michael O'Hare becoming a victim of studio politicians who wanted a bigger star in the leading role. "Revelations" explains that Sheridan's wife, Anna, died during an archaeological survey of the world Z'ha'dum, the name being just one of many references to Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings (the bridge at Khazad-Dum). "The Coming of Shadows" proved to beBabylon 5's finest hour to date, and in "In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum," Sheridan learns that Morden was on the ship on which Anna died. Three exceptional shows conclude the season. The Narn-Centauri war escalates in "The Long, Twilight Struggle," Sheridan faces a most unusual ordeal in "Comes the Inquisitor," and in "The Fall of Night" all hope of peace is shattered as a nerve-racking assassination attempt reveals a startling secret about Ambassador Kosh. "Matters of Honor" launchedBabylon 5's third season with the introduction of theWhite Star, a spacecraft added to enable more of the action to take place away from the station. Also introduced was Marcus Cole (Jason Carter)--in another nod toThe Lord of the Rings, a Ranger not so far removed from Tolkien's Strider. A third of the way through the season "Messages from Earth," "Point of No Return," and "Severed Dreams" prove pivotal, changing the nature of the story in a way previously unimaginable on network TV. Earth slides into dictatorship, the fascistic Nightwatch takes control of off-world security, and Sheridan take decisive action by declaringBabylon 5independent. "Interludes and Examinations" presented the death of a major supporting character, while the two-part "War Without End" reached apocalyptic dimensions in a complex tale resolving the destiny of Sinclair and the fate ofBabylon 4, resolving a 1,000-year-old paradox and presenting a vision of a very dark future for Sheridan and Delenn. All this was trumped by the monumental "Z'ha'dum." In the preceding "Shadow Dancing" Anna Sheridan (Melissa Gilbert, Bruce Boxleitner's real-life wife) returned from the dead, no longer entirely human. In the mythologically resonant climax Anna invited Sheridan back to the Shadow homeworld with no hope of survival. Just as inThe Lord of the RingsGandalf fell into the abyss at Khazad-Dum, so Sheridan took a comparable leap into the unknown on an alien world. Season 4 began on a high point with the Centauri Prime in the grip of the insane Emperor Cartagia (Wortham Krimmer) and a run of six shows leading to the climax of the war against the Shadows in "Into the Fire." If this colossal narrative was resolved a little too easily and the ultimate aim of the Shadows turned out to be a tad disappointing, it still proved to be the most powerful slice of space opera to ever grace the small screen. In the aftermath the sheer scale dropped back a little but the pace never slowed as the rest of the season played out in one relentless cycle of conspiracy, betrayal and conflict,Babylon 5siding with the rebel Mars colony against the totalitarian Earth. On an unstoppable wave fuelled by roller-coaster plot twists and spectacular action shows from "No Surrender, No Retreat"--when Sheridan avows to overthrow EarthGov--to "Rising Star"--when the aim is realized--Babylon 5achieved a consistent excellence rare in television. The final season found Claudia Christian departed and Ivanova replaced by Captain Elizabeth Lochley (Tracy Scoggins), who in a soap-opera twist turned out to be Sheridan's first wife. Sheridan was promoted to President of the Interstellar Alliance and the action moved to a group of telepaths seeking sanctuary from the PSI-Corp onB5. Meanwhile the aftermath of the Shadow War was explored, and as usual the season picked up toward the end, with a string of fine political episodes. The final episode, "Sleeping in Light," was directed by J. Michael Straczynski and made an epilogue to the series. Set 20 years later, after all the sound and fury this quiet, elegiac tale is the apotheosis of the love story that proved the balance to the tragedy of the preceding darkness. A personal story resolved against a background of the epic, at once transcendent, deeply human, and profoundly optimistic, "Sleeping in Light" is as moving as any hour in the history of television drama and a thoroughly satisfying conclusion to one of the greatest series ever made.--Gary S. customer 's review (Lord of the Rings-Fellowship)
(It's Tolkien, but ... This movie is good in the way Peter I guess didn't have all the time for the movie.)
(Great condition&timely arrival.)
(Magnificent!)
(A PRECIOUS EDITION) This is a movie I truly enjoy, because I never get tired of watching it! What I like most about it is the concept of a small band of men willing to challenge the evil that presents them! And the characters seem like they could be your noblemen, along side of you in the mist of battle! Truly Epic!!! I love this movie, I love the book and the series even more. Peter Jackson did an excelent job of creating this series and this opening movie. I did miss a lot of the details in which the director, Peter Jackson, I guess just couldn't find time to put into the movie. I see that the main idea of the plot is followed correctly and some stunning visual effects are used, including pieces in the movie that you don't find out in the book without extensive reading and study... That said I miss the first time the character Sam meets elves (on their way from Hobbiton to Buckland) and I also would have loved to see the feature in the book of Tom Bombadil and the Old Forest with moving trees and the great giant old tree which tries to crush Merry and Pippin in that area. The Barrow Downs and the Barrow Wights animation was sorely missed also... but the general overall theme of the movie hed together very well, and it lead perfectly into the rest of the trilogy in which if Peter would have included all the details of the book, would have put all of the audience asleep.
Still the book is better, but takes patience, and the movie is fun in seeing the visuals of the characters. Product did not arrive as originally advertized, but upon notification, seller sent the rest of the product. Everything came quickly and in a very good condition. Would purchase from seller again. I saw the film several years ago when it came out in theaters, and was blown away by what Mr. Jackson had wrought. Now that I have viewed the extended edition of the film, I am even more impressed and pleased. Mr. Jackson obviously loves Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, and he has provided a beautiful cinematic experience for the enjoyment of Rings fans. I recently finished re-reading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and broke this out to extend the experience. This also gave me a chance to compare the film to the books. Although some things puzzled me (like Aragorn's brief disappearance, or the decision to make the elves join the fight at Helms Deep), and some things I missed (like the barrow-wrights), I don't have the slightest quibble with Mr. Jackson's work. I expect I will view this film again and again. After countless years of animated adaptions and audio books, one of the greatet works of literature came barreling into movie theatres around the world with blades in both hands. The Lord of the Rings was a motion picture trilogy based on the classic Novels of the same name written by J.R.Tolkien.The movie stays true to it's literary counterpart, with very few liberties being taken by the director in terms of character development and plot. The action is extremely plentiful and very well choreographed. The audio is top-notch and the cinematography and numerous CGI effects are nothing short of breathtaking. The movie was cast quite well, with almost no moments of overacting or upstaging by any of the cast members. This Extended Version of the film provides nearly 45 minutes of extra footage not seen in the theatrical release. However, what makes this extended version different from other extended fims is that there are no new scenes that hinder the flow of the movie.Every new scene only enhances the overall storyline.Though this film is still astounding in any version,to see this Extended Edition is like watching another movie entirely. In the land of Middle Earth, young Hobbit Frodo Baggins is entrusted with the One Ring of the Dark Lord Sauron and with a fellowship of eight others, embarks on a quest to destroy it. Genre:Feature Film-Action/Adventure Rating:PG13 Release Date:17-JAN-2006 Media Type:DVD In every aspect, the extended-edition DVD of Peter Jackson's epic fantasyThe Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ringblows away the theatrical-version DVD. No one who cares at all about the film should ever need to watch the original version again. Well, maybe the impatient and the squeamish will still prefer the theatrical version, because the extended edition makes a long film 30 minutes longer and there's a bit more violence (though both versions are rated PG-13). But the changes--sometimes whole scenes, sometimes merely a few seconds--make for a richer film. There's more of the spirit of J.R.R. Tolkien, embodied in more songs and a longer opening focusing on Hobbiton. There's more character development, and more background into what is to come in the two subsequent films, such as Galadriel's gifts to the Fellowship and Aragorn's burden of lineage. And some additions make more sense to the plot, or are merely worth seeing, such as the wood elves leaving Middle-earth or the view of Caras Galadhon (but sorry, there's still no Tom Bombadil). Extremely useful are the chapter menus that indicate which scenes are new or extended.Of thefourcommentary tracks, the ones with the greatest general appeal are the one by Jackson and cowriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, and the one by 10 cast members, but the more technically oriented commentaries by the creative and production staff are also worth hearing. The bonus features (encompassing two complete DVDs) are far superior to the largely promotional materials included on the theatrical release, delving into such matters as script development, casting, and visual effects. The only drawback is that the film is now spread over two discs, with a somewhat abrupt break following the council at Rivendell, due to the storage capacity required for the longer running time, the added DTS ES 6.1 audio, and the commentary tracks. But that's a minor inconvenience. Whether in this four-disc set or in the collector's gift set (which adds Argonath bookends and a DVD ofNational Geographic Beyond the Movie: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring), the extended-edition DVD is theFellowshipDVD to rule them all.--David Horiuchi Rerations < The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition) >

(A good book that could have been great.)
(Read in one evening.)
(Very good earthquake story)
(Wow) Movie-exec Marty survives the Big One in Los Angeles and determines to walk to his home in the surrounding hills to find his wife. The devastation is almost complete: highways and airports on fire, most buildings now piles of rubble trapping the dead and dying, stunned survivors unsure of what to do or how to get help.
Marty proves to be an Everyman, torn between helping people and getting trapped himself, between getting home and guilt over those he doesn't stop to aid. There are wonderful vignettes: a woman trapped in a wrecked car who doesn't understand that an earthquake has occurred and no help will be coming; a Mexican food stand still functioning and selling meals to tattered passersby; Marty desperate to find a bathroom after his stomach can no longer handle the stress, finding a secluded bush and realizing too late there's an old woman in an upper window looking down. The writing is quite good, although Marty is the only 3-dimensional character portrayed. Quite a memorable disaster tale of one man's attempt to cope. I would have given this book 4 stars but for one thing. The last obstacle that the protagonist faces was just too much (I don't want to spoil it). The author lost me right before the end of the book. Not that everything that happened before that in the book was believable, but the author convinced me it was believable in the way it was written. But that last one ...
Otherwise, the book was very compelling. I wanted to keep reading. As others have stated, the hero was flawed but you grow to care about his fate. Some of the conversations were very stilted and formulaic, but then you realize that those conversations were take-offs on bad TV or film premises and the author quickly disabuses you of any notion that the language was meant to be realistic.
There is a great deal of good humor mixed in with the high drama of the premise. I got stared at on the plane yesterday when I laughed out loud during the depiction of a dream/nightmare in which the protagonist was interacting with characters in disaster movies - one particular line about Anne Heche in Volcano set me off. The author manages to nicely mesh the drama and the humor.
I really did enjoy the book, but I thought it jumped the shark with the last crisis the hero faced. Even though the book often lampooned disaster movies and such, it wasn't in itself a lampoon so it just didn't seem to fit. I bought this book on Sunday. Opened it to see what the formatting looked like and started reading. I didn't put down my Kindle until I finished.
Great book. Loved the characters and the story about LA after a big earthquake.
I highly recommend this book. btw the formattings great. I enjoyed this story, first because it was cheap! And I was able to read it on my iphone via the Kindle reader.
Second because it was a very believable account of a major earthquake, and how our "hero" adapted to what was going on around him. Good story. This is a great book. I wasn't expecting much but I loved it. It had a killer end and will make a great movie. Read it and enjoy. "Can books be better than TV? You bet they can -- when Lee Goldberg's writing them. "Lee Goldberg can plot and write with the best of them," Mystery Scene Magazine
It's one minute after the Big One. Marty Slack, a TV network executive, crawls out from under his Mercedes, parked outside what once was a downtown Los Angeles warehouse, the location for a new TV show. Downtown LA is in ruins. The sky is thick with black smoke. His cell phone is dead. The freeways are rubble. The airport is demolished. Buildings lay across streets like fallen trees. It will be days before help can arrive.
Marty has been expecting this day all his life. He's prepared. In his car are a pair of sturdy walking shoes and a backpack of food, water, and supplies. He knows there is only one thing he can do ... that he must do: get home to his wife Beth, go back to their gated community on the far edge of the San Fernando Valley.
All he has to do is walk. But he will quickly learn that it's not that easy. His dangerous, unpredictable journey home will take him through the different worlds of what was once Los Angeles. Wildfires rage out of control. Flood waters burst through collapsed dams. Natural gas explosions consume neighborhoods. Sinkholes swallow entire buildings. After-shocks rip apart the ground. Looters rampage through the streets.
There's no power. No running water. No order.
Marty Slack thinks he's prepared. He's wrong. Nothing can prepare him for this ordeal, a quest for his family and for his soul, a journey that will test the limits of his endurance and his humanity, a trek from the man he was to the man he can be ... if he can survive The Walk.

(Great, simple read)
(good start)
(For the want to be something more, something different)
(Lukewarm Love Stories for Tween Paranormal Fans) When I picked this book up I only read the first couple of lines of the summary on the back so I assumed that the whole book was about Poppy and James. I finally realized that wasn't the case and was a smidge disappointed but I kept reading. These are really good stories that are all linked together in some way. Vampires and witches rule in this set of novels and the author mixes action, suspense and romance very well without being too adult. This is truly a YA novel and I would have no problem recommending this to people of any age... kids or adults. My only hope is to hear more about the characters of these stories in the later volumes of Night World as I did become rather attatched to some of them, even though the stories were short. I never really liked Twilight, and i was hesitant to pick this book up, but after reading the Secret Circle, i had much more faith in L.J Smith. This series in my opinion is definatley ion my top five favorit series becasue they are easy reads, and although each character is related somehow they areall extremly different and are all unique. it was great becasue yes they were romance novels, but they were not exactly overbearing. They are also pretty funny. This is a collection of 3 short stories which introduces you to the night world. The main characters in each story are different, but loosely intertwined. I expect the Night World No. 2 to start to bridge the stories together further. It made me interested enough to want to (and will) read the Night World No. 2, but not so interested I had to rush out and grab the book right away. This is a book that within its three differnt scenes of text grabbing stories it allows you to want to be there, to be the main character, to dream of another world and wish there were more, more to ones dreary, daily life of work and home. I loved that each of the three stories had a connection with the one before, a "oh they are of the same heritage, back-ground,related". It wants me to keep reading just to find out, and I have to start reading the next novel just to know! Reprinted into three story volumes, L.J. Smith's Night World series is back for a new audience of paranormal fantasy fans. The first volume collects the stories Secret Vampire, Daughters of Darkness and Spellbinder.
[Secret Vampire] is the tale of Poppy, a teen faced with the sudden diagnoses of a terminal illness. With very little time left, her closest friend James reveals the secret of the Night World risking both their lives to possibly save hers. But will Poppy survive the turning and if she does will James be able to protect her from the Night World?
Call me a big sap but I liked the concept for this story. The idea of a terminally ill person offered the chance to die a painful human death or risk everything to become a vampire is a really fun dilemna. What kind of fell flat for me though was the lack of chemistry between James and Poppy. Their friendship and relationship wasn't very well fleshed out and I didn't find their mutual love for one another to be very believable. On the whole though the story would be perfect for a reader looking for a little soapy drama.
[Daughters of Darkness] centers around three sisters, Rowan, Kestrel and Jade, who are briefly mentioned in the previous story. Tired of the archaic ways of the lamia (vampires who are born not made) the trio escape from their Night World sanctuary to rural Oregon to stay with an outcast aunt. What they expect is for their brother to try and hunt them down. What they don't expect is that someone else might be trying to get rid of them... permanently. When a local human brother and sister's fate becomes intertwined with theirs it can only mean trouble.
A little overloaded with characters to keep track of this story was the slower of the three for me as a reader. The three sisters are definitely a bit strange, making their interactions with their human friends a bit weird but they are each likable in their own way. The mystery of who might being trying to get rid of them isn't completely obvious fortunately, which makes the story jump around from supsect to suspect. The romance angles are a little far-fetched but again, young fans will probably really enjoy that aspect.
[Spellbinder] focuses on a pair of cousins, Thea and Blaise, with a track record of getting booted from schools faster than one can bat an eyelash. Sent to spend the school year with their grandmother in Las Vegas the pair of young witches waste no time getting into new trouble. Both vying for the attentions of Eric, the two let their spell casting get out of hand and the results could endanger not just the local humans, but the secrets of the Night World.
Romantically the more believable story of the three I liked how this one ended a lot. The story had a very different feel from the two vampire tales and gives a glimpse into other parts of the Night World. The cousins are very different from one another and their relationship makes no sense at times but watching them use their different magics is very entertaining. Overall probably the more enjoyable tale of the three this one rounds the book out nicely.
As an adult reader I can't give Night World No. 1 more than an overall "It was okay" rating. Would another adult not like them at all? That I can't honestly say. I found them extremely formulaic and thus they just weren't that exciting or interesting. The romances were the lukewarm sort of stories that lack hero to heroine chemistry that adult romances thrive on. BUT I think this is a perfect book for the tween to teen set, this series is definitely written for kids. Parents looking for something without the coarse language and sensuality should be pleased to note the language here is clean and the most that happens in the stories are kisses. These are stories that work well for a young audience with their adventure, romance and continuity.
Vampires, werewolves, witches, shapeshifters -- they live among us without our knowledge. Night World is their secret society, a secret society with very strict rules. And falling in love breaks all the laws of the Night World. InSecret Vampire, Poppy thought the summer would last forever. Then she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Now Poppy's only hope for survival is James, her friend and secret love. A vampire in the Night World, James can make Poppy immortal. But first they both must risk everything to go against the laws of Night World. Fugitives from Night World, three vampire sisters leave their isolated home to live among humans inDaughters of Darkness. Their brother, Ash, is sent to bring the girls back, but he falls in love with their beautiful friend. Two witch cousins fight over their high school crush. It's a battle between black magic and white magic inSpellbinder. Rerations < Night World No. 1: Secret Vampire; Daughters of Darkness; Spellbinder >

(Great)
("There Is Plenty of Darkness...") The various characters in the Night World are beginning to merge into a common story. The first book seemed like a loosely connected group of short stories, when thinking of the characters, rather than a storyline with a direction. Although this book is set up the same way, the reader begins to to more character and setting connections as new characters are introduced. By the end of the second book there is an emerging plot that is bringing all of the characters together, whether for good or bad, and leads them to an approaching climax. I liked how they were short, sweet, and simple. Just because these stories don't have incredibly developed characters, the experience of reading them was remarkable. I loved every story. (The Chosen first, Dark Angel second, Soulmate third) It's probably a well known fact to people who read my blog that I am a huge L.J. Smith fan. I didn't find her works until recently when I saw the Vampire Diaries in reprint from Harper Collins, but L.J. has fans and books spanning back across the past twenty years. The Vampire Diaries is even slated to be a television show starting this fall on the CW, so look out for that one. Also if you are a going to start reading L.J.'s work The Secret Circle books are also in reprint so it is easy to grab copies of those and The Vampire Diaries and the books we are going to be talking about today. The Night World saga.
After picking up a copy of one of the other series, I immediately became hooked to the author's style of writing. Everything had detail and the situations and places were supernatural but seemed so real as if these events were a fantastic history not a fiction. The Night World is my favorite series from Smith. In the three volumes so far available there are three books each. So in essence nine books are out in three volumes from Simon and Simon Teen. The first volume introduces us to the Night World, what the different inhabitants are and also gears us up to learning what the soul mate principle is. As you read from the book excerpt before, Night People are supposed to stay away from humans, but yet an old power is awakening and humans are becoming the soul-mates of the most influential Night Persons. I recently interviewed L.J. and asked her some questions about the Night World series. Where the idea came from, and who her favorite Night World citizen is.
The second volume in the series, continues with the soul-mate principle. We learn a bit more about why this is happening and we learn of a group of witches called Circle Daybreak that allows humans and Nightworlders into their flock. They want to get along as one society and believe the soul-mate magic is waking up for a reason, something big is on the horizon and the whole world will be rocked.
In the most recent volume we learn that there are four wild powers that will decide the end of the earth. Will they join circle Daybreak and fight for good, or Hunter Redfern and bring about the end of the world? Well the end of humans that is. The stories in this volume are so fantastic and action packed I was shocked when each was done, thinking "that can't be right, the book is over". I cannot wait for the final installment so I can tear through and see what happens to the world in this apocalypse. Of course I hope Circle Daybreak finds all the wild powers before the darkness takes over.
I read a lot of teen supernatural books, more than I should probably. I realize a lot of them are fun, and give you a day off from having to think too hard. Relaxation at it's best. It is however rare to find quality of writing, and quality of story, in these paranormal teen books (ahem Twilight for example), I would like to see the teens who are reading this genre to pick these books up and see what good quality storytelling can mean for how you feel when you lay the book back down. If you liked the Immortal Instrument Series, Twilight Saga, or even the Vampire Diaries, you will love Nightworld.
I think my favorite story of the nine so far is Ash Redfern finding his soul-mate. What is yours?
http://bookalicio.us This book once again shows just what can come from true love and being willing to fight for it and whats right and good in the worl. Even if it isnt the world we're used to L.J. Smith's fantasy/horror/romance series "Night World" deals with the existence of a secret society of witches, vampires and shape shifters, and how they interact with the inhabitants of the human world. Although humans have long since gained superiority in the world over the "Night World" minority, the supernatural creatures treat humans with distain and prejudice, often calling them "vermin" and plotting ways in which to regain power over the world.
As such, it is fine for Night World inhabitants to deal with humans in whichever way they please as long as 1. Humans never find out about the Night World and 2. They are never fallen in love with. As the introductory page in every books proclaims: "These are stories about what happens when the rules get broken."
First published in 1996, Lisa Jane Smith's "Night World" series was released as a ten-book series...only the tenth book never arrived. Smith took a ten-year hiatus from writing, leaving the final book unwritten and the steadily-building story incomplete. But now, finally, the end is in sight. Simon and Schuster are republishing the series in three-book omnibuses in anticipation for "Strange Fate" the last in the series that has left us hanging for over ten years. Like many, I was a teenager when I began reading these books, and it was a sense of nostalgia that brought me back to these reissues.
The first omnibus edition sets up the basic premise of the Night World, introducing several concepts and characters that pop up again in later books, and are quick, entertaining reads. But it's not until the fifth story (found in this collection) in the series that things really get moving, and Smith begins to draw on her established history of the Night World, bring back past characters, and begin to set the scene for more epic things to come.
"Dark Angel" is unfortunately the weakest book in the entire series, namely because it has little to do with the Night World at all. Gillian Lennox is walking home from school one day when she's overcome by hypothermia and succumbs to the cold. Yet on her way up the infamous "tunnel of light" she is met by a spirit who calls himself her guardian angel and sends her back to earth, claiming that it is not yet her time.
But when she revives, she realizes that her "Angel" has come with her and acts as her guide in gaining much-coveted popularity in her school, as well as the attention of her long-time crush David. And yet, as time goes by, Angel starts to make more sinister demands of her, that begin to have dangerous repercussions to those around her.
To introduce a character by having her wander off alone into the woods to investigate a strange noise is certainly not the best way to introduce a character, and Gillian never comes across as particularly bright. Likewise, her connection with David is undoubtedly the blandest romance in the entire series (and he doesn't seem to be a particularly good catch anyway, only noticing her after she's changed her physical appearance, and almost kissing her whilst already having a girlfriend). Although Gillian *does* have a connection to the Night World, and we do get a cameo appearance from Ash, it doesn't make up the bulk of the story, and this story would have been better as a stand-alone novel rather than a book in a series.
But it is the next two stories in this collection in which things really start to get interesting.
"The Chosen" centers around Rashel Jordan, a young woman whose mother and brother were killed by a vampire when she was just a child. Now she spends her nights hunting down vampires, sometimes with a group of fellow vampire-hunters, but often by herself. However, during a mission to investigate the disappearance of several girls in the area, she is horrified to discover that she's compelled to let a captive vampire go free after her fellow hunters resort to torture.
Thus she is forced to act alone when she rescues a teenage girl and discovers that the vampires in the area (including the one she spared, Quinn) have been kidnapping humans for the slave trade. Going undercover, she plans to get into the local club, become one of Quinn's "chosen" and get herself into one of the hidden vampire enclaves. Of course, it doesn't quite go as smoothly as that, but "The Chosen" is suspenseful, surprising and even rather poignant at times.
Finally "Soulmate" really brings Smith's idea of the soulmate principal to the fore, in the installment that is probably more centered on romance than any of the others (and has the most convincing couple since Ash/Mary-Lynette). Hannah Snow goes to a psychiatrist in order to understand the reason for her nightmares and the strange warning notes that she's subconsciously writing to herself. Undergoing hypnosis, Hannah travels back through her numerous past lives in which she is apparently the victim of a vampire that stalks her down through the ages.
Despite several plot-holes, "Soulmate" is one of the better ones simply because we get a large chunk of the Night World's history, as well as plenty of foreshadowing as to what's to come (namely, our first mention of the apocalypse) and appearances from nearly all of the main characters of the previous books. Smith has always had fun with cameos and namedropping in previous books, but for the first time we finally get a sense of the collective movement of certain organizations and the impact they have on Smith's created sub-world.
The "Night World" series shouldn't be mistaken for anything other than light reading for young teenagers, but there is a certain weight and gravitas to Smith's stories that lift them above your standard vampire/supernatural/romance fare (or maybe that's just the nostalgia talking). In either case, the series goes from strength to strength, as by the next omnibus, things get even darker for our assorted heroes. The female characters are intelligent, self-sufficient, and never wait around for their boyfriend to come and save them, and the stories themselves are brisk, interesting and build on a solid-gold premise of mystery and danger.
Although the "soulmate principle" does feel like a somewhat lazy way of bringing too people together without them having to get to know each other (hmm, sounds like another vampire/human girl couple I know...) at least in this case the concept has a purpose in the larger story-arc of the Night World and humankind reaching some kind of peace together, and both parties have to work in order to enjoy their togetherness. Hopefully, our ten-year wait for the final book in the series "Strange Fate," will be worth it. Vampires, werewolves, witches, shapeshifters -- they live among us without our knowledge. Night World is their secret society, a secret society with very strict rules. And falling in love breaks all the laws of the Night World.InDark Angel,Gillian is saved from drowning by her guardian angel. Only visible to Gillian, Angel will fulfill her heart's every desire. But when Angel starts making strange and sinister requests, Gillian must question who he truly is and where he came from. Armed with a wooden stake, martial arts, and the will to resist a vampire's mind control, Rashel struggles to avenge her mother's death inThe Chosen. Then she meets Quinn, her soulmate, who is part of the world she has vowed to destroy. Hannah receives notes warning her of incredible danger inSoulmate. But if death is her destiny, is the Lord of the Night World's love strong enough to save her? (It has it's flaws, but it's still a fun game...)
(Great story, lousy combat)
(The most boring game ever made in the history of the planet.)
(Could have been better...) Having played Silent Hill 2, 3, and some of 4 I would have to say that Homecoming is the least scariest. This is in part because the developer, Double Helix, decided to revamp the fighting system in order to defeat monsters rather than running away. This results in a game that may not be as disturbing due to the fact that monsters can be seen in great clarity. The fighting system itself is well implemented, there are fast/slow attacks, a dodge button and the ability to circle around which greatly help you take down everything the game throws at you. With this said however, some players may find it difficult to get used to fighting since some of the timing requirements to doge or counterattack enemies can at times be tricky.
In the graphical department Homecoming is a mixed bag the environments and monsters look crisp and clean, but may not up to par with some current generation games. The human characters however, are less than average with a limited amount of facial movement to articulate their feelings, their delivery could have been better. The exception to this is Alex, but even he could have been done better.
As far as the story goes, I rank it as less than average compared to the others I have played. The whole premise of Homecoming involves Alex Sheppard, a former soldier, coming back to his hometown of Sheppard's Glen in search of his brother. I won't ruin the rest for you, but suffice to say that there are some twists, turns and decisions that will lead Alex on several realizations, and some dramatic moments involving his family and the town's connection to silent hill. With regards to symbolism, the Silent Hill games have always been choked full. Although some of the symbolism in this reviewer's opinion is not as prominent as other games, it is there if you look hard enough. Fans of the movie Jacob's Ladder will no doubt recognize some similarities.
Overall Silent Hill: Homecoming is a good game, that I would recommend for series veterans, and someone looking for a creepy adventure. It sports five different endings warranting some replayability. I would however advise that you do not pay full price. My copy was purchased for $29.99 which I felt was appropriate given the length and the time spent with it, but paying $59.99 for a copy might lead some to feel like they were burned. Happy Gaming
To start off: The first half of this game deserves 5 stars. I was blown away when I started playing this; the graphics were amazing, the worlds were beautiful (and creepy), the characters were well narrated, the fights were challenging, and I would actually get scared during parts of the game. Each enemy was given it's own introduction, and the first encounters seemed almost like mini boss fights. Then there were the bosses: the first two were RIDICULOUSLY hard. It made the game very intense. You were struggling and striving to survive, just as you should in a survival game. However, it was all down hill after the defeat of the second boss. As another reviewer mentioned: in the second half of the game they bombard you with supplies. By that time you should have discovered ways to make short work of most of the creatures you encounter, so you find yourself overstocked. Having an overstock of supplies takes the anxiety out of your encounters, which is half of what causes a horror game to actually be frightening. The last two bosses are rather easy (in comparison to the first two), making it almost seem like the designers got the beginning of the game switched up with the end. Also, the second half starts to take on more a cheesy "we ripped this off the Silent Hill movie" feel. By the second half the game starts to deviate from it's roots in the other Silent Hill games and head more in the direction the movie did. The plot ended up feeling very "Americanized"; a large amount of the mystery was stripped out of it, and it ended up feeling more like a sequel to the movie rather than the other games. It seems funny in retrospect; during the second level I kept thinking there was no way the designers were going to be able to top it and it seems they realized the same thing and didn't even try.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a fun game and I recommend it to fans of the series. The fighting system is greatly improved and more involved, you now have the added bonus of dodging and combo attacks that will have to be used if you want to make any progress in the game. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, each enemy has it's own weaknesses that can be taken advantage of to make short work of them. This all works to make fighting feel much more realistic than it has in previous games. Once again, the worlds do look amazing, and if you're anything like me you'll find yourself spending quite a bit of time just looking at details in the graphics. But, most importantly, I found this game to be fun--and challenging--to play.
**Warning to novice players: There is no easy mode for this game. The game settings are for Normal and Hard, with the normal mode feeling more hard than normal. People who are not used to survival games--or who can't get used to the new fighting system (dodging and combos)--are going to find this game to be very frustrating. This game has a very promising story, however I have no clue what happens, since I keep dying. It does not blow in the sense that it is a bad game. On the contrary, I thought that the story line was compelling. However the enemies may be a tad too much. I am an avid video game player, and I have a great deal of trouble with these enemies. There is very little ammo provided and the enemies can drain half your health in one shot. This is a story centered game, not a hack and slash, it shouldn't take this much effort to kill these enemies. Frankly, I gave up on it. I would have liked to find out what happens in the story, but I could not contend with the enemies. At first it was okay, then, about thirty minutes into the game I had no idea what to do next. I literally spent hours running around trying to figure out what the heck I was supposed to do but I decided to stop wasting my time. This game is so boooooooring, even the music is boring. Its unrealistic like why does every single door in the world have a broken lock? makes no sense, ripoff. Silent Hill Homecomings was hands down great in the graphics department. The bosses were fairly easy to beat once you figured out the timing of their attacks. Several times I found myself laughing at the game's attempt to scare you with fake shrills and sound effects. This game dragged a bit in the pacing of the plot. While this game is not as great as the 1st Silent Hill and Silent Hill Origins for the PSP, it's worth playing. The story is short and the soundtrack is hot. Follow the story of Alex Shepherd, who is returning to his hometown of Shepherd's Glen to investigate the sudden disappearance of his brother. From Shepherd's Glen to the foggy streets of Silent Hill, Alex must face the darkest of horrors in order to find his brother. Struggling with his own grip on reality, Alex must unravel the mystery behind his nightmares, discover the truth behind his brother's and father's disappearances, and confront the evil that has taken hold of his own flesh and blood.

Struggling with his own grip on reality, it's here that Alex must unravel the mystery behind his nightmares, discover the truth behind his brother's disappearance, and confront the evil that takes hold of his own flesh and blood in the process.Improved Gameplay Firmly steeped in the Survival-Horror genre its series has been pivotal in establishing, action inHomecomingremains based on exploration of the terrors residing in the communities surrounding Toluca lake and puzzle-solving skill as a means of surviving them. But to its credit game developer Double Helix refuses to rest on past laurels, choosing instead to include new more accessible gameplay in the hopes of gaining a new audience forHomecoming. Examples of this gameplay include:Next-Gen Visual and Spatial Features- Every sequel seeks reinvent the namesake game in their series.Homecomingdoes this in three ways, by adding the ability to toggle between a traditional third-person view and an action-oriented first-person view; by adding fully 3-D physics to the game, creating a realistic range of motion for any and all objects impacted by the player; and by adding transitions or "Hell States" that alter the game's physical landscape at points in the game both in real-time and via cinematics. All three actively change the way players see themselves and in the process create a whole new game experience. An Enhanced Combat System- Adding to the standard knives, axes, pipes and other melee weapons that made up the arsenal of previousSilent Hillgames,Homecomingadds a wide variety of guns and explosives. Fitting with the military back-story of protagonist Alex Shephard, these weapons can be wielded in attacks weighted as weak or strong and can be strung together in combos to stun or incapacitate opponents, who can then be taken out with powerful finishing moves. With practice players can even perform evasive ducks and rolls and follow these up with counterattacks. But remember that enemy AI has also been significantly improved to compensate for your higher degree of combat prowess, and that it's not uncommon to battle multiple monsters simultaneously.Key Features:- Enter the next chapter ofSilent Hillas you delve deeper in the tormented history of the town and learn of the evil that surrounds Toluca Lake.

(Great for Goosebump fans and anyone into cartoonish games.)
(DO NOT BUY THIS "GAME")
(Goosebumps at its best)
(Fun and entertaining) Kid Review: I think HorrorLand is a LOT of fun and has challenging games, and so many different areas to visit. It has given me many days worth of fun trying all the many different games and challenges! This game was fun! My 10 yr old boy&I both liked playing it! I bought this game for my brother, 12 years old, and it SUCKS! It takes forever to actually get into the games and the games are these tedious challenges you have to get through in order to get to more "fun" or interesting rides. Seriously, we spent hours trying to figure out how to even play the damn thing. I watched him get frustrated, discouraged, and even bored at points as we tried to figure out how to "unlock" other aspects. Then when you do, the other games are super dull and irritating too.
Also lame, is that there are all of these "rides" included that simply don't work! You click on it and it says "closed" or under construction. There are a lot more fun and exciting game choices for the Wii.
Seriously, learn from my mistake, DO NOT BUY THIS "GAME"! Goosebumps Horrorland is a very fun game even for adults. There are a bunch of different worlds you can unlock and you actually get to walk around and interact with the people. There are several different mini games within this game and a lot of them are challenging. You earn tokens and scare meters to unlock different mini games throughout each world. You get to collect and buy monster cards throughout the game. This is not like any other "mini game" game that I have played before. The graphics are awesome and you really feel like you are in the horrorland world. This is actually a game with a storyline.
I recommend this game to anyone who like simple but fun games. I am an adult and I love this game. Although this game did not get a great review, it has been a major hit for the child I purchased it for. He plays it as much as he can and loves it! I would recommend it for any child that loves the Goosebumps series. Goosebumps HorrorLand is an adventure game set in a fright-themed amusement park filled with over thirty thrilling rides and bone-chilling attractions. Sounds like fun--until you discover the scares are all too real and find yourself vanquishing vampires, hanging on for life on the Roller Ghoster and battling Certain Death. As you fiendishly try to escape the park, you will unravel a mystery, encounter a host of creepy horrors, monsters and mummies plus trademark Goosebumps twists and cliffhangers. Goosebumps HorrorLand offers suspense, tension, humor, and pulse-pounding action.

(Fantastic for 2nd Grader)
(Good game!) Great for all ages. I purchased this game for my 7yr. old, there are plenty of carnival type events that are challenging on basically 3 levels rewarded as either bronze, silver, or gold medals called "Horrors". Points are based on such horrors, bronze being being the least to gold being the most point value. The more horror points you gather the more events you'll be able to play. There's alot to the game which keeps it interesting, it's not something you or your child will pass in a week then be done with and toss to side. Perfect for a lazy day or long car ride. I tried this game myself and liked it alot, I found the controls to be rather simple, and the graphics pretty good, the horrors or monsters in the game are actually pretty scary looking which is cool. Easy enough for young players and yet still challenging enough for the young at heart, I have to rate this as a five star overall, and would recommend this game to friends and family especially those with a child(ren) they want to keep occupied for any length of time. I bought this for my 9yo son. He thought it was really hard at first but now seems to be addicted. He plays it quite a bit and is having fun with it even though it is sometimes harder than he'd prefer. I purchased this game and have fun it very fun but challenging. The graphics may not wow the heck out of you but it is addictive and fun. What you do is you are stranded at the famous Horrorland themepark and you play games(mini games) and you can trade for monster cards with other people wandering around the park and you can find coins in garbage cans, lamposts, and trees. You can use those to trade for cards or you can use them to play the mini games. There are games such as the Roller Ghoster, Mummy Run, Mini Golf, Test your stregth, and games you have to shoot vampires, ghosts, monsters, and bats. You can also go on rides like the coffin cruise and the roller ghoster. It has different levels you can unlock with frights which you win on how high your scores are in the mini games. Some games are creepy like the Flash Fright, Roller Ghoster, and the Scorpion one. They also have a bumper cars which you try to DESTROY your opponents. If you're looking to challenge your friends I don't beleive they have a multiplayer. This game is rated E10+ and I'd say ages 9 and up. It may scare little kids. I'd say all the goosebumps readers\DS Owners would love this game. 5 Stars! My daughter started reading the Goosebumps chapter books the beginning of this school year. Horrorland was her favorite and I was thrilled to see it in a DS game for her. She plays it all the time (after homework is done of course). It's great for her to be able to tie the game to the books that she reads. It's just one more way to hold her interest in reading. This game is pretty fun. You don't neccessarily have to be a fan of the Goosebumps series to enjoy it. In order to advance in the levels in this game you must play mini games in order to earn "fright points" which unlock different areas, rides, and games. These games aren't exactly easy. But all the same, fun. It's an addictive game and really fun. Just be ready for a challenge!
