(original soundtracks recordings from classic horror)
(Unforgettable sounds of Horror) Reading the two reviews was helpful. The Salter/Skinner Son of Frankenstein cd is a favorite of mine. Now we need to see new symphony recordings of Karl Hajos' Werewolf of London score and Heinz Roemheld's Invisible Man music. Buster Crabbe's Flash Gordon borrowed from both of these, and fans of Universal Studios horror/suspense music know how great all the music was on that 1930s serial. You can access some great music clips at Tony LoBue's Flash Gordon web site. Do you want to hear all of that wonderful soundtrack music that Universal Studios used in their monster movies of the 1930's and 1940's? Then there are some fine recordings now available on CD. I particularly recommend the Moscow Symphony Orchestra's recording of the Monster Music of Hans J. Salter and Frank Skinner, featuring music from Son of Frankenstein, the Invisible Man Returns, and the Wolf Man, three of the finest examples of the genre. One soundtrack that does not seem to be available is from the Invisible Man, which as I recall was also used as background for the old Flash Gordon serial. That particular music tempted me to buy "Legendary Horror Films", even though there was only one track from it on the disc. Apparently, whoever made this disc simply copied the music from a recording of the film, sound effects and all. Despite the copyright warning on the label of this Spanish import, I wonder how the folks at disconforme.com managed to get the necessary approvals. In any event, it would probably be more pleasurable to put the DVD's of these movies in your player and leave the TV screen dark than to play this album. If you are a classic horror film buff, like me, you'll love this CD containing ORIGINAL soundtrack recordings from the films. Taken from isolation tracks from the masters ( that means music and sound effects only, no dialogue), this is the only CD I know of that has the music directly from the films, NOT re-recorded! Ok, some tracks definitly show their age, but fascinating to listen to none the less. The wolf man is probably the strongest and most recognizable of the tracks, but once you start listening, all those dark, creepy Saturday nights watching Creature Features will come back to you...wonderful! Growing up and watching the great Universal horror movies on late night TV, I as most kids did, became infatuated with the classic movie monsters of the 30's and 40's. Now, here in one collection are most of the opening soundtracks from these legendary horror films. The creepy swan lake suite from Dracula to the thunderous music of impending doom that started most of the Frankenstein movies. And, who could forget that classic score from The Wolfman with Lon Chaney. Most tracks are lifted directly off the movie soundtracks, so slight background sounds can be heard, but that just adds to the enjoyment. The opening to Dracula, is NOT the original from the movie, it seems the first few bars have been edited and a different version added in. All in all, this is a MUST for classic horror fans. Try puttting on this disc, and guessing what movie each track is from, it will bring back haunting memories of stormy dark nights where the monsters truly roamed our imagination... Digitally remastered original soundtrack music from a host of horror classics like Dracula, the Frankenstein series, Wolf Man, The Mummy, Hunchback Of Notre Dame, The Invisible Man, Cat People, King Kong and more. All the great composers of the genre are here as well: Franz Waxman, Max Steiner, Alfred Newman, Charles Previn and many more. THE FORMAT WAS NORMALLY "ALL REGIONS" BUT I GUESS THAT ONLY THE PEOPLE WITH A REGION 1 APPARATUS COULD WATCH IT. SO I SPENT MY MONEY FOR NOTHING. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT. I WANTED TO SEND IT BACK TO AMAZON BUT FINALLY I CHANGED MY MIND BECAUSE I WOULD I HAVE LOST MONEY. This is one of my favorite movies of all-time, I just love the action and adventure plus Rachel Weisz. I was very happy when this movie was finally released in Blu-Ray I watch it all the time just to re-live the adventure and watch Rachel. This movie sparkles in Blu-Ray and has more features and extras that I am still watching If you're expecting bandaged-wrapped corpses and a lurching Boris Karloff-type villain, then you've come to the wrong movie. But if outrageous effects, a hunky hero, and some hearty laughs are what you're looking for, the 1999 version ofThe Mummyis spectacularly good fun. Yes, the critics called it "hokey," "cheesy," and "pallid." Well, the critics are unjust. Granted, the plot tends to stray, the acting is a bit of a stretch, and the characters occasionally slip into cliché, but who cares? When that action gets going, hold tight--those two hours just fly by.The premise of the movie isn't that far off from the original. Egyptologist and general mess Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) discovers a map to the lost city of Hamunaptra, and so she hires rogue Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) to lead her there. Once there, Evelyn accidentally unlocks the tomb of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a man who had been buried alive a couple of millennia ago with flesh-eating bugs as punishment for sleeping with the pharaoh's girlfriend. The ancient mummy is revived, and he is determined to bring his old love back to life, which of course means much mayhem (including the unleashing of the 10 plagues) and human sacrifice. Despite the rather gory premise, this movie is fairly tame in terms of violence; most of the magic and surprise come from the special effects, which are glorious to watch, although Imhotep, before being fully reconstituted, is, as one explorer puts it, rather "juicy." Keep in mind this film is as much comedy as it is adventure--those looking for a straightforward horror pic will be disappointed. But for those who want old-fashioned eye-candy kind of fun,The Mummyranks as one of choicest flicks of 1999.--Jenny Brown Rerations < The Mummy >

(MST3K is my god!!!)
(mst3k the original movie)
(Two Movie for the Price of One!)
(No extra's but a release finally) This is the greatest movie of all time. I can't get enough of it! Every time I watch it, I find something new that I missed the first couple of times. And it's hilarious to quote, too... Good movie for late-night movie nights! I worship at the alter of MST3K!
This movie is the best movie of all time. Best anything of all time. If this movie were a medicine, it would cure both AIDS and cancer and erase all wrinkles and belly flab!
I love Mike, Joel, and the Bots.
"Yes, your all high toilet hog." these movies run hot and cold, but this is the Original and it is FUNNY. this is the one that started it all, definitely needs to be part of any geeks collection. As the proud owner of the MST3K boxed DVD sets, this movie was a "must see." The best part is that the worse the movie Mike Nelson, Crow and Servo are watching, the better the wisecrack remarks coming from the trio.
Island Earth is a movie made for MST3K projection. The remarks by Nelson and the robots were so fast and furious, a few times we had to stop the DVD and rewind; we were laughing so hard we missed a few lines. One of the robots even recognized that one of the scientists in the movie played the "professor" on Gilligan's Island. And this happened right after we remarked, "Hey, isn't that..." It was hysterical.
This is one of the best MST3K's I've seen. Love this movie, keeps me in stitches every time again. Typically humour of the "you had to be there" kind. Sadly no extra's on the DVD, only the french dub; I guess for our Quebecois-friends, as this is a region 1 release. All in all a good buy this new release, especially since up to now old second hand VHS-releases have been going for about $150,-. The cult television show (in which a hapless space explorer and his robot pals are forced to watch and deliver a hilarious running commentary on bad movies) makes a successful transition to the big screen as Mike and the 'bots lay waste to the '50s sci-fi yarnThis Island Earth(a painfully stiff would-be epic that's actually a cut above the usualMST3Kfare). While ardent fans may be a little miffed that more advantage isn't taken of the expanded theatrical venue (aside from a tad more scatological humor than usual, the content here would fit in comfortably as a regular episode of the series), the nonstop, hyper-literate salvo of comedy riffs that run the gamut from references to Tommy Chong's backyard to Yes album covers more than make up for any conceptual complacency. Be prepared to laugh till it aches.--Andrew Wright Rerations < Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie >

(The Changeling)
(excellent movie)
(Old-school psychological thriller)
(Watching this scary flick may leave you changeling your pants) my neice loved it she gives it 5 stars she loves scary movies the scary they are the better they are. George C. Scott, Trish Van Devere, and Melvyn Douglas do a fine job in this chilling tale of a haunted house. Scott plays a father and husband that loses his wife and daughter to an accident. He is a composer and he decides to move to a rural community from the city. Scott is offered a Historical Society home to rent. As Scott investigates the reason a child was killed at the home he unfolds an in depth story of a families past. Scott uses all means possible to find out more including a seance. His investigation leads him to a powerful foe. The movie has great atmosphere and subtlety that makes it different than the current bleeders. The directing and camera work are excellent. It will make you feel as though you were there and it will quite probably give you a chill. This story builds suspense and horror. Well worth owning especially at the current $5.99 price. Good quality DVD and replayability. No extras. If you enjoyed this catch "Ghost Story" and "The Lady in White".
CA Luster A must see! Like suspense? Like great acting? Like spook without gore? A classic for me and maybe you, too! What could I say positive about this movie that hasn't already been said?
It's true that it's an aged movie and by the standards of today's younger audiences it may seem "lame" or "boring".
But if we take all the 4 and 5 star ratings and stack them up against the 3, 2, and 1, stars we've got 299 positive (this is including mine as of 8-9-08) to 24 negative. That sort of says it all right there.
If you're a connoisseur of the old-school horror/thriller type movies than "The Changeling" is right up there with classics like Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" or Hitchcock's original "Psycho." Different stories/events ... but the same chills run down your spine. This one is truly spooky. Other movies that have scared the bee-jesus right out of me come to mind whilst writing about "The Changeling": Ghost Story, Fatal Attraction, or Shannon Tweed's Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death. This movie is right up there with them and perhaps even a little scarier than Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death (which sure is fun to say...try it, right now, go on, right there at your computer...laughed didn't ya?)
George C. Scott turns in a convincing performance and Trish Van DeVere (who sounds mostly Dutch) is winningly watchable as they play this star-crossed detective kinda couple who have to get to the bottom of the mysteries of the haunted house Scott finds himself living in. The plot starts to build on a low boil and just ratchets up the scare heat from there. What one learns when watching this movie is that little kids who die young through no fault of their own (but perhaps the fault of others...don't want to give away a spoiler here you know) and lived in Seattle (but not for long) at the turn of the century will go to any lengths to revenge their death. If this isn't a truism you have arrived at in life just yet...get "The Changeling" watch but just don't watch it alone in a dark dark house on a stormy stormy night. No, you'll want all the lights on for this one my friend.
Warning, if you are parents of young children especially boys, there may be this scene that you will have difficulty watching if not all together turn you off from watching anymore of the movie. I was Ok with the remaining 99% of the flick since there are scenes that are so truly scary that you'll be shivering in your justin ropers you will.
Since the flick was made in 1980 there are some effects that will elicit a chuckle which is just fine if your making a comedy, not so much for a horror flick. George C. Scott's character's wife and young child die, he moves to Seattle and naturally wants to live in this creepy old house that no one has live in for quite a while because well it's creepy and most likely to be haunted. Well it turns out it is; haunted. A boy died sometime around the turn of the 20th century and is spending his god-given purgatory of a ghost's half-life trying to revenge his death. He is one pissed off ghost, he is.
This boy will use others to write just as fast as he can, whisper spooky ghost-like whispering in one of those reel-to-reel recorders (you know the type that all good poltergeist hunters use), shake some chandeliers, do wheelies in a wheel chair, relieve some painful memories in other peoples minds and perhaps the coolest ghost trick of all...make jewlry squirm out of a well-grave soil underneath someone's floor just like an earthworm mind ya.
So if you like to get a kick every now and then getting your pants scared clean off...get this here "Changeling" flick. It's a little part detective story, a little part murder-mystery, a lot part ghost story, even a little part politico conspiracy power and money grab story. It's a whole lotta scary and gobs of loads of fun. ...mmw When a recent widower (the wonderfully overemphatic George C. Scott ) moves into an antique Washington mansion, his realization that he may not be the only resident leads him toward a deadly secret that refuses to remain buried....The best haunted-house film since the legendaryHaunting, this potent, classy combination of the mystery and horror genres eschews explicit gore and dumb shocks in exchange for a subtle creepiness that occasionally builds to a terrifying peak (watch out for that seance scene!). The result is a satisfyingly intelligent horror film with an intriguing dash of Watergate-era paranoia. Director Peter Medak went on to direct the considerably more gratuitous and somewhat less effectiveRomeo Is BleedingandThe Krays.--Andrew Wright Rerations < The Changeling >

(Total Disappointment!)
(An enjoyable couple of hours.)
(Bargain...)
(GIB DIS PEEPLE EAAIR!) Total Recall is certainly imaginative. I've seen it twice now, and I STILL don't understand it. I think you could watch this film a few times, and still have questions that you needed answered. But it plays with your mind, and leaves you racking your brains, wondering if what you just saw actually happened.
In my opinion, this is not Arnie's best movie. Maybe it's the character I'm not sure. And normally I love Arnie in movies. Just didn't get this one. Mind you, I don't often understand films that are based on Philip K Dick stories - does anybody? This is based on 'We'll Remember It For You Wholesale'.
Arnie plays Doug Quaid, a construction worker, who's bored with his uneventful life, but not with his nymphomaniac wife (Sharon Stone). For some reason, he's fascinated by Mars, to the extent of dreaming about it. Dreaming that he's there, with another woman. There's a way he can get a 'vacation' implanted into his memory, and with a bunch of extras - like being a secret agent for example.
Once unconscious, Quaid wakes up in a rage, claiming he's no Quaid, but a man called Hauser. (Anne of Green Gables fans, watch out in these scenes, for a character called Doctor Lull, who was played by Rosemary Dunsmore, who played Katherine Brooke in the Anne Of Green Gables sequel.) But the technicians haven't even begun to implant the vacation yet. Blacking out again, and waking up some time later, he's confused. His once loving wife is out to kill him, as well as his colleagues, and he has some unfinished business on Mars. Despite the fact he's never been there you understand.
It's from here that the film skews into a totally different plot and left me completed puzzled. A later scene involves Doctor Edgemar coming into the so called vacation to tell Quaid/Hauser that he's had a schizoid embolism back in the chair when he was getting the implant. This is quite possibly the point where I definitely started to lose the thread of the film - as well as being confused about whether Quaid was Hauser, or Hauser was Quaid, something happens in this scene (I won't give it away) which completely confused me.
In a way, it's good because it leaves the viewer to decide what actually happens. The viewer can decide whether or not the film is a dream, or a reality, whether Quaid gets lobotomised or not, whether Quaid is Quaid or Hauser etc. But for simple minds like mine, it's left totally bamboozled.
Whereas I did enjoy what I could understand of the movie, the reason I'm giving it a low rating, is because it's simply not my favourite Arnie movie.
The movie transfers well onto blu ray, and some additional scenes (more footage of Mars for example) would have looked amazing in high definition. One of the best action movies I've seen but ouch on the blu ray quality. Very disappointed! If you have the special limited edition on DVD, keep it and stay away from this blu ray. Sci-fi actioner set in the year 2084 in which Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a construction worker who discovers that his memory has been erased and that he had a secret life on Mars that he cannot remember and which follows Schwarzenegger's quest as he travels to Mars to find out what he has forgotten, all the while trying to avoid people who are trying to kill him because of what he now knows. A good sci-fi B-movie directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring the ever irrepressible Schwarzenegger in the kind of sci-fi action role that he does so well. The memory erasure plot is intriguing and throughout the film there is never an uneventful moment. The special effects aren't half bad either and the make-up department did a really great job for some of the supporting characters playing deformed mutants. But be warned: the film is very violent (as per usual for Paul Verhoeven!). An enjoyable couple of hours. I have read other reviews of this Blu-ray and many people are upset with the quality of the disc...so I was actually surprised that it looked as good as it did. I saw NO blocking or few artifacts so I'm not sure what going on with other peeps equipment - I am using a PS3 with a Panasonic AE-900U front projector and a 40 foot HDMI cable. The picture can look soft at times and fairly sharp at others so perhaps it's partially the source material. At any rate for 13 bones plus change it's a bargain given the high price of other Blu-ray movies. I don't own the regular DVD (I have it on laserdisc) so I don't regret buying this version. Total Recall is EASILY one of the funniest and most violent science fiction movies around! It's also one of the overall best Arnold Schwarzenegger movies of all time. It's so good that I can't possibly write a review comprehensive enough; I'll just honor Arnold and Total Recall as best I can.
Arnold is married to Sharon Stone - at possibly her sexiest shortly before exploding onto the scene in Basic Instinct - but wants to go on vacation to Mars because of recurring dreams in which he cavorts with a mysterious and gorgeous brunette named Melina (Rachel Ticotin at her most delicious). Instead, he goes to a company that does mind implants, providing retroactive vacations to various parts of the solar system. It's just too bad that they interfere with previous government sponsored brainwashing.
Eventually he learns that he was a former agent on Mars, gets a video from himself in the past in which he tells himself to remove a spherically shaped tracking device from his own nose, despite the fact that the device is three times the circumference of a nostril. He also tells himself, "Git yo as* to Mahrs."
It is on Mars where he sees the following: a mutant lady with three boobs, a knife and machine gun wielding midget hooker, oxygen-depletion that has led to horribly disfigured freaks, and a philosophical, prophetic, baby mutant that grows out of another man's chest, clearly inspired by Danny Devito in Arnold's previous movie Twins.
And the great thing is he manages to see all of this as secret agents are chasing him and trying to kill him. One memorable scene has Arnold on a crowded escalator where he uses some poor guy as a meatshield during a gun battle, tossing his carcass aside after it's served its purpose. It's as bloody and gory as scenes come, and a signature of the explicitly violent and/or sexual content master Paul Verhoeven.
With the mystery uncovered, and the bad guys defeated, one last bit of drama subsides as Arnold has to somehow use an alien device to unleash hell on the Mars atmosphere, delivering relief to all the planet's inhabitants.
There are a ton of groin shots, perpetual single-bullet head shots, a decapitation, and a mechanical but realistic, removable, exploding fake face/head helmet thing. I know it sounds unlikely, but you just have to trust me. Of course, there are several classic Arnold one-liners. For instance, just after he executes his former pseudo-wife, Arnold deadpans, "Consider dat a divohrce." The best of all one-liners is when he kills someone with a drill and yells, "SCREW YOU!!"
If you watch this and fail to find something interesting, then you simply don't like movies. This science fiction blockbuster from 1990 began its production life as a very different movie than the one that was released. An adaptation of the Philip K. Dick short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale,"Total Recallwas originally conceived of with Richard Dreyfuss starring as a Walter Mitty-like character who experiences a variety of artificially induced fantasies. The movie we know is a mega-budget action epic set on Mars. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a normal working man who discovers that his entire reality has been invented to conceal a plot of planetary domination. Oscar-winning special effects and violent action propel the twisting plot, in which Arnold manipulates his manipulators in a world of dazzling high technology. Director Paul Verhoeven (Robocop) indulges his usual penchant for gratuitous bloodshed, but the movie has enough cleverness to rise above its excesses.--Jeff Shannon This science fiction blockbuster from 1990 began its production life as a very different movie than the one that was released.
