(A smorgasbord of vintage terror treats)

(See the movies instead)

(original soundtracks recordings from classic horror)

(Unforgettable sounds of Horror)
Reading the two reviews was helpful. The Salter/Skinner Son of Frankenstein cd is a favorite of mine. Now we need to see new symphony recordings of Karl Hajos' Werewolf of London score and Heinz Roemheld's Invisible Man music. Buster Crabbe's Flash Gordon borrowed from both of these, and fans of Universal Studios horror/suspense music know how great all the music was on that 1930s serial. You can access some great music clips at Tony LoBue's Flash Gordon web site.
Do you want to hear all of that wonderful soundtrack music that Universal Studios used in their monster movies of the 1930's and 1940's? Then there are some fine recordings now available on CD. I particularly recommend the Moscow Symphony Orchestra's recording of the Monster Music of Hans J. Salter and Frank Skinner, featuring music from Son of Frankenstein, the Invisible Man Returns, and the Wolf Man, three of the finest examples of the genre. One soundtrack that does not seem to be available is from the Invisible Man, which as I recall was also used as background for the old Flash Gordon serial. That particular music tempted me to buy "Legendary Horror Films", even though there was only one track from it on the disc. Apparently, whoever made this disc simply copied the music from a recording of the film, sound effects and all. Despite the copyright warning on the label of this Spanish import, I wonder how the folks at disconforme.com managed to get the necessary approvals. In any event, it would probably be more pleasurable to put the DVD's of these movies in your player and leave the TV screen dark than to play this album.
If you are a classic horror film buff, like me, you'll love this CD containing ORIGINAL soundtrack recordings from the films. Taken from isolation tracks from the masters ( that means music and sound effects only, no dialogue), this is the only CD I know of that has the music directly from the films, NOT re-recorded! Ok, some tracks definitly show their age, but fascinating to listen to none the less. The wolf man is probably the strongest and most recognizable of the tracks, but once you start listening, all those dark, creepy Saturday nights watching Creature Features will come back to you...wonderful!
Growing up and watching the great Universal horror movies on late night TV, I as most kids did, became infatuated with the classic movie monsters of the 30's and 40's. Now, here in one collection are most of the opening soundtracks from these legendary horror films. The creepy swan lake suite from Dracula to the thunderous music of impending doom that started most of the Frankenstein movies. And, who could forget that classic score from The Wolfman with Lon Chaney. Most tracks are lifted directly off the movie soundtracks, so slight background sounds can be heard, but that just adds to the enjoyment. The opening to Dracula, is NOT the original from the movie, it seems the first few bars have been edited and a different version added in. All in all, this is a MUST for classic horror fans. Try puttting on this disc, and guessing what movie each track is from, it will bring back haunting memories of stormy dark nights where the monsters truly roamed our imagination...
Digitally remastered original soundtrack music from a host of horror classics like Dracula, the Frankenstein series, Wolf Man, The Mummy, Hunchback Of Notre Dame, The Invisible Man, Cat People, King Kong and more. All the great composers of the genre are here as well: Franz Waxman, Max Steiner, Alfred Newman, Charles Previn and many more. The booklet includes faithful reproductions of original movie poster graphics as well.

(Great movie, very poor Blu-Ray quality -- grainy picture, few extras)

(Big Bang for Little Bucks)

(Arnold can do it all.........)

(Classic)

(An action favorite but poor transfer)
Fantastic movie, but this is the poorest-quality Blu-Ray image quality that I have yet seen.

I traded in my Special Edition DVD of this movie for the Blu-Ray version with the expectation that the new version would have high-definition video and at least a few of the Special Edition's extras. Not so.

The video is very grainy and spotty, almost like watching a videotape recorded in a theater with the camera pointed at the screen.

The disk includes a single featurette and none of the commentaries or other extras that were included in the Special Edition.

If you possibly can, don't buy -- wait for a fully remastered and restored Blu-Ray which includes the commentaries.

I recently went high def and was searching blu-ray titles for movies with big scenes and/or big action. This one scored high on both. I probably wouldn't have sought it out but at the price I couldn't lose so I gave it a try and have thoroughly enjoyed the high def experience.
Arnold is a great actor. I bet he would be be great in polatics also!!! To remake in 5.1 Audio is great. The FX are amazing. The movie is so professionally laid for 1991. I just glad to have 3 NIB in my collection. The metal case is wonderful. Very artistic.
This movie is a sci-fi classic. Everything in this movie calls to the movies of the 80s but it's delivery still holds up well. Great entertainment
Total Recall had its controversy in its heyday. Known for its violent scenes and fast paced action sequences, it was a favorite movie of mine when it first entered the theater. It was an interesting blend of science fiction, action, and some suspense mixed in together. One left the movie with many questions that are still being pondered to this day. That said, the Blu Ray version is a bit of let down.

The film quality of the Blu Ray version is sub par at best, with artifacts and some noise. My Blu Ray player up scales dvd movies with better picture quality than this transfer. I ended up having to change my picture settings to get a less noisy picture. This version was a real downer since high definition should look better than high quality dvd transfers. While the $10 price tag (or around this price range) is attractive, if one has a previous DVD version then one should really wait for a better edition on Blu Ray.

On a side note:
This Blu Ray version of Total Recall really shows the need for accurate reviews of Blu Ray movies (instead of dvd versions). Not all Blu Rays have good picture and sound quality and some are outright poor in these two areas. I would advise anyone to check out reviews, especially those that detail the picture quality, of prospective Blu Ray movie purchases.

This science fiction blockbuster from 1990 began its production life as a very different movie than the one that was released. An adaptation of the Philip K. Dick short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale,"Total Recallwas originally conceived of with Richard Dreyfuss starring as a Walter Mitty-like character who experiences a variety of artificially induced fantasies. The movie we know is a mega-budget action epic set on Mars. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a normal working man who discovers that his entire reality has been invented to conceal a plot of planetary domination. Oscar-winning special effects and violent action propel the twisting plot, in which Arnold manipulates his manipulators in a world of dazzling high technology. Director Paul Verhoeven (Robocop) indulges his usual penchant for gratuitous bloodshed, but the movie has enough cleverness to rise above its excesses.--Jeff Shannon

(not bad)

(Fun game)

(So-so game)

(A lot of fun.)

(This game is not for kids...if your looking for hidden object game for kids try "Ultimate ISpy")
being a fan of hidden pictures this game can be a challenge, but can be completed very quickly. In each room you find pieces of items and then must place the items back where they belong. The hardest part is some of the coloring makes it hard too see items. The rooms are very busy, but this game can be played by all ages. I would have liked to see more rooms or variation in this game
This game is fun. Really enjoyed it. But it was hard to see some of the pieces. Other than that, it is a great game.
very sharp eyes - REQUIRED. completed the game in about 4 hours. not worth for the price i paid.
My 6 year old son&I played this on the computer....so I don't know how it is yet on the Wii. I thought the computer version was really fun. Yes, the parts can be a challenge to find, but that is part of the fun. And I liked that you had to get things from one area to make things in other areas "work"... We only got to play for a short time (free play) so we were very disappointed when we had to stop. I've been debating on purchasing the version for the computer, but now I think I'll try the Wii version instead. I can't wait to try it!

Mortimer Beckett and the Secrets of Spooky Manor is a new hidden object game. In a bit of a twist, sometimes hidden objects you are searching for are broken up into several pieces. There is also an integrated storyline and adventure which makes solving puzzles superbly fun and more than just a seek and find type game. We are looking forward to this spooky manor game. This has turned into a fan favorite game and is now available in the retail market. While we are hoping for a sequel, none have been confirmed. Mortimer Beckett is one of the best hidden objects games in quite a long time. You'll love this adventure for sure with the great artwork and fun story.

Hunt the halls of Spooky Manor for hidden objects, return the items to their rightful places and solve a series of brain-bending puzzles to get to the bottom of this eerie mystery. Only those with a keen eye for detail will discover the answers hidden in Spooky Manor.

(Dark and Creepy)

(Dark Corners)

(Better than I expected, not as good as I hoped.)

(Better than I was expecting)

(Hell Awaits...)
If you're looking for a disturbing thriller to watch I really recommend this movie it keeps your interest from start to finish. Strange but interesting plot with a great ending.
Thora Birch is really good in this movie basically playing two different characters.

This is a dark creepy tale. You must pay attention all the time to gain an understanding of what is happening. This film is full of real dramatic acting, not another story of a slender, waif like female who possess incredible fighting prowess.

The vulnerability and confusion of the lead character is one of the movies many strengths.

Dark Corners (Ray Gower, 2006)

This movie had almost bottomless potential-- done right, it could have been one of those indie gems that becomes a cult favorite. There are flashes of that brilliance throughout the movie. But it never quite reaches its true potential, and there are times when it gets so badly derailed that it's incapable of getting back on track. Because of this, it's one of the most disappointing movies I've seen in recent memory, while I have to give writer/director Ray Gower respect for having had the ambition to take on such a formidable project in his first attempt at writing and directing a movie.

Thora Birch (American Beauty) plays two roles here. Susan Hamilton is a happily-married woman who's trying to get pregnant. When she falls asleep, she adopts an alter ego, Karen Clarke, who lives on the (very, very) bad side of town, works for a crazy undertaker, and is constantly followed by strange characters whose intentions are never certain. As the film goes on, we begin to wonder which of these realities is the "real" one, or whether Susan Hamilton and Karen Clarke are actually doppelgangers living in the same town. And what's the deal with the Night Stalker, the serial killer active in the city? What does he have to do with the story?

There's so much here. Gower has a wonderful ear for dialogue; there are scenes here that rival the best of Tarantino, as far as the script goes. The acting ranges from the competent to the brilliant; Birch, especially, has rarely been better. The cinematography is always interesting, if a bit obvious in its influences.

And therein lies some of the weak spots that pock the film; it's a little too much at times, in every respect. It's not just the cinematography. The symbolism rears out of the shadows and whacks you across the face every now and again. The script loses focus. The dialogue wears thin. In every case, the film gets back on track quickly, but each of the slips adds up. And then, by the time we get to the major derangement, it's all added up to the point where the movie drops out completely. It's unable to recover, and it just keeps spiraling downwards. But despite that, there's so much here that says that Gower's going to be a heavy hitter some day that I'm really looking forward to his next movie, to see if he's managed to control some of the downsides while not losing the upsides. **½

I caught the edited-for-TV version on SciFi and when it started, it seemed like it might be just another bad SciFi Saturday night flick but I ended up watching this to the end. Kind of like a car wreck that you just have to turn&look, this film manages to be weird but still interesting enough to keep you watching and make you wonder what the heck is going on. One thing I liked about this film was the color of it - some of the outdoor scenes had an almost sepia color tone to it that really added to the mood the director wanted to create. If you're a Thora Birch fan (as I became after seeing Ghost World), you'll probably like her in this, too. This is on my will-buy list. 3 and a half stars.
I enjoy movies that I can't figure out immediately. I also like movies that are a bit odd, off-kilter so to speak. You know, films like MEMENTO, HEADSPACE, JACOB'S LADDER, CARNIVAL OF SOULS, etc. Well, DARK CORNERS fits right in with these other classics of bleakess and dread! Thora Birch (American Beauty, Ghost World, The Hole) plays the dual role of Susan- in the sunny, happy world of light, and Karen- in the darkworld of nightmare. I was perplexed by what connection there could possibly be between these two women. I was pleasantly stunned by the answers at the end! The last movie to make my jaw drop (in a good way) was HIGH TENSION. DARK CORNERS had that same twisty, grabber of a finalé for me. So, if you are a fan of the macabre, weird, or creepy, then this one will be a treat...
This Lynchian nightmare stars Thora Birch (AMERICAN BEAUTY) as a woman who can't escape her bad dreams. The line begins to blur between reality and the horror that lives in her mind making everyone--including the audience--wonder what's really happening. DARK CORNERS also stars Toby Stephens (DIE ANOTHER DAY) and Christien Anholt (RELIC HUNTER).Runtime: 95 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: HORROR Rating: NR UPC: 013137215698 Manufacturer No: DV72156

(Jennifer Connely Works)

(Hydro-Phobia...)

(Anti-climatic Wash-up)

(Anathema to say so in some quarters, but I preferred this to the original.)

(Could rival Stephen King)
I got this movie in Blu-Ray- super quality. Jennifer Connely is hot as always. She's hot, because she's got Heart, and she's beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the acting and the Blu Ray High Def.
My main reason for watching DARK WATER was the presence of the amazing Jennifer Connelly (Labyrinth, Phenomena, Dark City, Requiem For A Dream). She has a beauty and innocence that I find captivating. As Dahlia Williams, Ms. Connelly has this same charming quality, while going through a living hell. Dahlia is being assaulted on three separate levels. She is haunted by the terrible memories of her childhood, dogged by the insanity of her current, ugly divorce, and plagued by the ghostly happenings in her apartment building. Dahlia and her daughter, Cecelia are in the middle of a black storm of overwhelming forces. A combination that would drive most souls to despair, most minds to break down. Watching this poor woman go through this ordeal is downright depressing, yet Connelly plays it w/ her usual grace. DARK WATER is a supernatural mystery. Beyond that, it is a story about the undying love of one mother for her daughter in the face of abandonment, desolation, and mounting terror. I watched it twice, and liked it more the second time around...
Dark Water is great at manufacturing tension using a contemporary project (apartment) complex as the source of shadows, dim and yellow light, strange noises, and black-colored water. The tension is level almost from the beginning of the movie until the end, and rarely is there a scary moment to break it. Even the comic relief of the daughter is unintentional as she plays with her toys in the bathtub -- although she steals this scene, it is due to her personality, not the script.

This film is largely plotless. It's also not entirely a character sketch, as many plotless movies can be. For a horror movie to be a character sketch is risky and quite interesting. For a horror movie to have no plot is downright suicidal. The movie fails mostly because it lacks a believable sequence of events. The relationships between the characters are well-developed and the cast is quite good, but there's nothing for them to do. Look scared, be scary, but why? And the utter non-ending is truly thoughtless -- the film ultimately has no regard for the audience.

I suspect that much of the problem has to do with translation. Not Japanese to English, but rather Japanese sensibility to Hollywood sensibility. Something is missing here, a finger on something important. After all, the best horror movies are about our worst fears. Who is afraid of dark water stains?

I loved the original of "Dark Water" and expected to be disappointed by this, as in the terrible remake of "Ring", but I was very pleasantly surprised to find this was a most excellent movie and better than the original, in that this one didn't leave in what seemed like unnecessary parts, which in the original seemed to drag in places, whereas this one never seemed to lose its atmosphere but continued on with its slow building feeling of dread. The original film seemed to include too much more going on, especially near the end, whilst this one kept things more minimal and was therefore more effective for it. Greatly conveyed the feeling of hopelessness and dampness, dripping water, always raining outside, dampness and more dampness, it was everywhere. Obviously very well thought out and full marks to the makers for creating the damp feel which was always there, so you always felt affected by it. Great movie.
The strength of Steven King is being keeping his creepiness on the edge of what can be real or normal. This story, a remake of the Japanese film by Hideo Nakata and based on "Honogurai Soko Kara" by Koji Suzuki is one of those that are just on the edge of real.

Probably mentally challenged Dahlia Williams (Jennifer Connelly) is in the middle of a nasty divorce and due to economics is moving with her daughter `Ceci' (Ariel Gade) to a creepy slum tenement. Her daughter is also going a little funny, seeing dead people and so are we. Can her mother turn this all around and pull us out of this slump with a happy ending? Only time will tell. Now sit back and do not get caught talking to the invisible or very visible Natasha Rimsky (Perla Haney-Jardine.)

Dark City [Blu-ray] - Jennifer Connelly

Dahlia williams is starting a new life but when things take a turn for the worse her apartment takes on a life of its own. Mysterious noises persistent leaks of dark water&strange happenings cause her imagination to run wild sending her on a puzzling pursuit to find out whos behind the mind games. Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 05/11/2007 Starring: Jennifer Connelly Tim Roth Run time: 105 minutes Rating: Ur
In many waysDark Waterimproves upon the memorable Japanese film it's based on. The earlier version was directed by Hideo Nakata (whose excellent shockerRinguwas remade in America asThe Ring), but in the hands of director Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) and screenwriter Rafael Yglesias, this psychological horror story gets an intelligent and more chillingly effective overhaul. The story is rooted in themes of love and loss that Yglesias similarly explored in his excellent screenplay for Peter Weir'sFearless, here focusing on young mother Dahlia (Jennifer Connelly) as she endures difficult divorce proceedings and settles into a low-rent apartment in New York's cramped Roosevelt Island community, near Manhattan, with her young daughter Cecilia (Ariel Gade). Amidst seemingly endless rainfall, Dahlia's world slowly unravels, and Connelly is superb as a woman seemingly on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Or is she? Could it be that Cecilia's imaginary friend, and the apartment's persistent leaks of dark, dripping water, are the ghostly manifestations of a young girl who had been abandoned by the previous tenant? Creepy atmosphere and high anxiety are expertly maintained by Salles, and supporting roles for Tim Roth, John C. Reilly and especially Pete Postlethwaite give the film an added edge of mystery. The tension builds slowly (gore-mongers and action fans may be disappointed), but the cumulative effect is palpably unnerving, inviting favorable comparison toRosemary's Baby. Unlike some other remakes of Japanese horror hits,Dark Waterdoesn't feel redundant; it stands on its own thanks to the impressive work of everyone involved.--Jeff Shannon

(Just as Good as I Remembered.)

(Great quality download&no problems with playback)

(Definately Interesting and thought provoking film.)

(Decent story, great scenary, good acting, a little dated)

(a marvelous travelog and mediocre mystery)
Saw this movie when it first came out ages ago and it always stuck in my mind. I confess that a couple of the main resons it stayed with me was because of the stunning images of the Egyptian countryside and monuments, the equally stunningly gorgeous Frank Langella, and finally, it was a good story about black market buying of ancient artifacts. Erica Bane, played by Lesley-Ann Down, comes to Egypt to prove a hypothosis she has regarding Pharoh Seti the First. There she meets a shop owner, played by Sir John Gielgud, and witnesses his murder, but not before he has shown her a golden statue of Seti the First with a curious cartouche inscribed on its base. Soon she too is endanger, as her investigation of the golden statue and the meaning of the mysterious cartouche draw her deeper into discovering a long ago, clever secret of Seti's tomb builder. Frank Langella is an Egyptain authority that assists her and eventually becomes her lover. Erica must deal with asassins, being locked away in a creepy desert catacomb, and trying to figure out what man she can really trust to be who they claim to be. There's much nail-biting action and mystery in this movie. I did manage to find an old VHS of this movie, but wish it would come out DVD so the sound and picture would be purer, but it was still very enjoyable to watch again.
I wanted to review this movie mainly to review Unbox. There are a lot of nasty reviews of Unbox on the Internet, most of which are a year old. It appears that Amazon has improved the software since its release, since I could turn off its running in the system tray at startup (one of the biggest complaints out there) and the player worked fine for me. I installed it on one of my XP Media Center PCs and the best way I found to play it was by running Media Center and going to the My Videos section, where it was immediately available for playback (this was after I had downloaded it). All I needed Unbox for was the download and that took about 3 hours. The playback quality was great, especially considering the original film quality of this is about 3.5 out of 5 (i.e. the bitrate quality fit the film quality). All-in-all, it was a good experience, for me. And when I'm done, the DVD won't require Unbox to play it ;)

As far as a review of the film itself, I mainly downloaded it to burn for a friend and I may or may not watch it, so no review here.

I watched this movie several times as a kid growing up and it's always stuck in my memory. Finally I located this movie and was able to get it and see it again. Still makes me wanna do some digging in egypt!
This movie was made in the 70s or 80s (I forget). Some of the acting is rather dated, but the overall story was engrossing and interesting enough as a rental. Definitely different than today's standard fare. And great views of Egypt.

Lesley-Anne Down was actually fairly good in the role, as was Frank Langella. John Gielgud as a Muslim just didn't get the job done for me, and was somewhat laughable. This was his last role before he passed away.

As a long-time Egypt-o-phile, this movie held my attention mainly because of its rich portrayal of daily life in Cairo, Karnak, Luxor, Sakkara, Giza, the Cairo Museum, and scenes many tourists don't see. I visited this area as a tourist some years ago, and the movie was a vivid reminder of many things I saw (and didn't).

The plot is stereotypic of the "Egyptian mummy's curse" genre, tho well illustrated by interesting portrayals of past and present Egyptian tomb builders and robbers; greedy, violent antiquity-smuggling crooks and dedicated government officials; and the standard beautiful female Egyptologist on a noble, solitary mission.

The various bad guys' allegiances and agendas were confusing to me (as intended?), as they menaced Lesley, the vulnerable, intrepid, beguiling female lead.

The "forbidden-love" aspect of the plot seemed artificial to me, but may appeal to others. It may add poignancy and drama to the predictable end of the heroine's quest for Seti I's lost tomb. The prior scene where the trapped heroine falls into a dim, ancient chamber full of skeletons reminded me (and so was less impactful), of the similar scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The similarity was bolstered by one of the male characters in this film being the same as in Raiders, with what seemed to be identical facial hair, demeanor, accent, and clothing. "Indy" does not appear here...

Overall, this is an entertaining formula mystery/action film, mainly because of the rich visual portrayal of Egyptian history, scenery, and pre-terrorist life in 1981.

Enjoy!

A sudsy second cousin to exotic-locale thrillers likeCharade, Franklin J. Schaffner'sSphinxoffers a pleasant popcorn blend of old-school serial excitement and paperback-novel romance. Lesley-Anne Down (looking lovely as always) is top-billed as an archaeologist searching for the lost (and cursed, naturally) tomb of a king in Egypt. After witnessing the murder of a local expert (John Gielgud), Down becomes the target of assassins; Frank Langella is on hand as a handsome stranger who generates sparks with the good doctor as he attempts to help her locate the tomb. The Egyptian locations provide a picturesque backdrop for this film adaptation of the serviceable novel by Robin Cook; the cast (which includes John Rhys-Davies, who returned to the region that same year inRaiders of the Lost Ark) is also attractive and definitely game to navigate the story's pulpy machinery.--Paul Gaita

(Be prepared for emotions)

(GODZILLA FANS UNITE - BRING 1985 TO DVD!)

("When Mankind Falls Into Conflict With Nature Monsters Are Born.")

(The legend completed)

(Ouch)
This movie is plain sad - and, I don't mean the movie in general - this is a {Class A} Godzilla movie, however, the only Godzilla movie that brought me to tears. Yes, I know it is only a movie, and Godzilla is just a man in a rubber suit - but, still... the ending sequence of the movie, where a flock of birds are made to lure poor Godzilla into a volcano, to supposedly die, well, it's just damn heart-wrenching!!! I swear, I cry every time at the end, and of course the ending music's sad as well, just makes it hard not to cry. Yes, I'm a 37 year old woman, and I cry to a dang Godzilla movie - so, I can't help it. The only other movie that makes me cry is at the ending of Dot and the Kangaroo - so, there you go.
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST GODZILLA MOVIES EVER MADE! WHY HAS THIS ONE BEEN LONG OVERLOOKED FOR DVD RELEASE? GET ON THE STICK AND GET THIS DONE!
Thirty years later and it's still about radiation and models.

"Godzilla 1985" is a slightly updated version of the classic Godzilla movie: it's still a guy in a big rubber suit stomping around detailed models, and he's still embroiled in a plot with heavy-handed doses of the Japanese skepticism of radiation. (Given their history, I don't blame them.)

Here Godzilla once again emerges from the sea, and poses a peril to mankind. The Soviets defy the wishes of the Japanese government and launch a nuclear weapon at Godzilla despite the fact that he happens to be in Tokyo at the time. Collateral damage, anyone? The US military fortunately dispatches the Soviet missile with a missile of their own, while consulting with Raymond Burr who is reprising his role as Steve Martin. Burr advises that firepower is not the answer, and that a deeper understanding of Godzilla's motives are key to defeating him. With that in mind they immediately plan to lure Godzilla into a volcano.

Along the way we get to see some special effect typical of the genre. My personal favorite is the "Super-X" secret levitating craft, although Godzilla's encounters with the model boats, helicopters, planes, and buildings are still fun to watch. The best laugh of the movie comes from the drunk guy running from Godzilla after mistaking him for a restaurant waiter repeatedly. (I'm not making that up.) There is another customary device in this movie, namely, everyone in Japan seems to know everybody else. True to form, plot contrivances abound here.

The movie ends with Godzilla in the volcano, although we aren't totally sure whether or not lava can destroy him, as there is always another sequel right around the corner. Please note the sanctimonious voiceover work from Burr during the volcano-luring: it really wants to be deep, but it just doesn't work given the ridiculous onscreen image.

This is a great resurrection of the Godzilla franchise after a decade-long break. It is enjoyable if you like the giant-monster-attacks-models genre, which I do. For those fans I recommend the film wholeheartedly.

OMG, you have to get to the last scene and the closing theme. Man, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. This is, clearly, not so much the legend reborn reinventing of the Godzilla myth that we'll see in the later series so much is it is the final say in the Godzilla we'd known and loved through the 60's and 70's; this film owes far more to the Kaiju of "Mosura" or "Smog Monster" than to the later epics. For one thing, this is probably the last time when SCIENCE is the hero, triumphing over beasts of men and monsters despite the lack of government funding ;)

True, the special effects in this film are a departure from the 70's fare, but that's what makes this film so special in the Godzilla cannon: It has the FEEL of a modern film but it has the ETHOS of the classical era. It is at once very modern and also quite at home with even the Godzilla's Revenge entries. I waited a long time to see this one (20 years!) and I was not disappointed. This film is, in many respects, "the missing link".

But that last bit, as soon as the techobeat started, I knew it was 1985 all over again, and when the lyrics hit? ... I'm still giggling. First class Godzilla, five thumbs up if I had them.

There's not a lot to say about this movie except that the music is bad, the Godzilla costume is sad, his roar is terrible, and the story stinks.
In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the originalGodzillafilm, the lizard king returned to the big screen after a decade of inactivity for this 16th Godzilla feature. Originally released in Japan in 1984 asThe Return of Godzilla, this modern sequel sweeps away decades of sequels and even recaptures the awe and grandeur of the original film, while adding modern technology and increased military firepower. But let's not get too carried away: this is ultimately a classic Japanese monster movie, and the best moments are the Big G's rampages through Tokyo, knocking over buildings and crushing cars and trains underfoot. It's still a guy in a suit stomping through lovingly detailed miniatures, and by American standards it'll always have that delightfully cheesy camp element, but this painstakingly crafted affair is one of the easier such efforts to take seriously. And fear not, you can't keep Godzilla down for long: he returns inGodzilla vs. Biollante. American distributor New World Pictures dubbed and trimmed the Japanese version while adding new American scenes featuring Raymond Burr, who reprises his role as reporter Steven Martin from the originalGodzilla. The videotape also features Marv Newland's goofy animated short spoofBambi Meets Godzilla.--Sean Axmaker

(20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA)

(Moral Muddle)

(The 1954 Disney classic in spectacular 2 DVD Set!!!)

(Great classic movie for younger kids)
These movies are just as enjoyable to watch as they were the first time I saw them and look forward to having them on hand to watch again at my leisure. :D
IT WAS A GREAT MOVIE TO WATCH AGAIN HAVEN'T SEEN IT IN MANY YEARS. NOW I CAN SHARE IT WITH MY WHOLE FAMILY AGAIN...
The ship (the Nautilus) goes deep, but almost everything else about this science fiction movie is superficial. So why is it entertaining? Is it a tease, is it the fascination with past/future imaginings, the visual experience (an early version of a nuclear submarine, recognizable actors, historically accurate sets), or music designed for greatest impact? Learn from this film's mistakes, then teach your children higher standards.
20,000 Leagues Under The Sea is an all time Disney live action classic!!! This awesome 2 DVD set has a THX approved anamorphic widescreen transfer of the film and "submarine" full of great supplimental material!!! This 1954 classic is fun for the entire family!!! Now's it avalibale at nice low price!!! I'm pretty sure a Blu Ray version will "surface" eventually, until that we have this great version to enjoy!!!
A wonderful movie that I enjoyed as a youngster and still enjoyed by my younger grandchildren today.
The swashbuckler genre bumped into science fiction in 1954 for one of Hollywood's great entertainments. The Jules Verne story of adventure under the sea was Walt Disney's magnificent debut into live-action films. A professor (Paul Lukas) seeks the truth about a legendary sea monster in the years just after the Civil War. When his ship is sunk, he, his aide (Peter Lorre), and a harpoon master (Kirk Douglas) survive to discover that the monster is actually a metal submarine run by Captain Nemo (James Mason). Along with the rollicking adventure, it's fun to see the future technology that Verne dreamed up in his novel, including diving equipment and sea farming. The film's physical prowess is anchored by the Nautilus, an impressive full-scale gothic submarine complete with red carpet and pipe organ. In the era of big sets,20,000 Leaguesset a precedent for films shot on the water and deservedly won Oscars for art direction and special effects. Lost in the inventiveness of the film and great set pieces including a giant squid attack are two great performances. Mason is the perfect Nemo, taut and private, clothed in dark fabric that counters the Technicolor dreamboat that is the beaming red-and-white-stripe-shirted Kirk Douglas as the heroic Ned Land. The film works as peerless family adventure nearly half a century later.--Doug Thomas
Climb aboard the Nautilus ... and into a strange undersea world of spellbinding adventure! Kirk Douglas, Paul Lukas, and Peter Lorre star as shipwrecked survivors taken captive by the mysterious Captain Nemo, brilliantly portrayed by James Mason. Wavering between genius and madness, Nemo has launched a deadly crusade across the seven seas. But can the captive crew expose his evil plan before he destroys the world? Disney's brilliant Academy Award(R)-winning (1955, Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects) adaptation of Jules Verne's gripping tale makes 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA a truly mesmerizing masterpiece!

(The Lord of the Rings -- extended)

(LOTR It's the best)

(YET ANOTHER PRECIOUS EDITION)

(Lord of the Rings)

(A perfect finish to the tale)
This purchase was made as a gift for my older son. He (and all of us) have enjoyed the great extras on this dvd set as well as the production of the Lord of the Rings. As always, an easy transaction with quality products and shipping quickly to whatever address we need. Thasnk you so much.
I've bought each of the Platinum Special Limited Edition Collectors Gift Sets for all my children (now grown), and, of course myself. I read Tolkien as a child, so did my children, but they read MY books. We're a LOTR family. The Lord Of The Rings story and people really come alive in these films. Peter Jackson has done us a real favor in giving the generations these films.
The fellowship return one last time to strike the final blow against Sauron and end the war for Middle Earth.Like it's predecessors,Return of the King boasts spectacular acting and top-notch special effects. This edition features nearly an hour of new footage not seen in theatres, with each new moment adding to the story in a positive way.Like the extended editions of it's predecessors, there is a massive amount of bonus features spread out over two disks.Whether you're interested in the film's editing/stuntwork/scoring/design/construction or even production paintings and sketches, there's something here for you.Like James Cameron's directors cut of Aliens, the extended editions of these films are superior to all others and are the way these epic films were meant to be seen.
Thanks for the movie, its my favorite of the trilogy and it was the only one I didn't have on extended edition.
Having throughly enjoyed the theatrical release several years ago, I can say that I was even more pleased with this extended edition of The Return of the King. Once again Peter Jackson has lovingly crafted a cinematic experience faithful to Tolkien's masterpiece, and everyone involved deserves high praise for bringing The Lord of the Rings to cinematic life. I understand that, after many years of false rumors, Mr. Jackson is likely to shortly (2010?) bring The Hobbit to theaters. He has certainly earned the right to do so!
IN THE FINAL FILM OF THE TRILOGY, FRODO MAKES HIS WAY THROUGH THE DARKNESS TO MOUNT DOOM TO DESTROY THE ONE RING, WHOLE ARAGON LEARNS OF HIS DESTINY&THE OTHERS PREPARE FOR A BATTLE THAT WILL DECIDE THE FATE OF ALL.
WithThe Return of the King, the greatest fantasy epic in film history draws to a grand and glorious conclusion. Director Peter Jackson's awe-inspiring adaptation of the Tolkien classicThe Lord of the Ringscould never fully satisfy those who remain exclusively loyal to Tolkien's expansive literature, but as a showcase for physical and technical craftsmanship it is unsurpassed in pure scale and ambition, setting milestone after cinematic milestone as the brave yet charmingly innocent Hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood) continues his mission to Mordor, where he is destined to destroy the soul-corrupting One Ring of Power in the molten lava of Mount Doom. While the heir to the kingdom of Men, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), endures the massive battle at Minas Tirith with the allegiance of the elf Legolas (Orlando Bloom), dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) and the great wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Frodo and stalwart companion Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin) must survive the schizoid deceptions of Gollum, who remains utterly convincing as a hybrid of performance (by Andy Serkis) and subtly nuanced computer animation.

Jackson and cowriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have much ground to cover; that they do so with intense pacing and epic sweep is impressive enough, but by investing greater depth and consequence in the actions of fellow Hobbits Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd), they ensure thatReturn of the Kingmaintains the trilogy's emphasis on intimate fellowship. While several major characters appear only briefly, and one (Christopher Lee's evil wizard, Saruman) relegated entirely to the extended version on DVD, Jackson is to be commended for his editorial acumen; like Legolas the archer, his aim as a filmmaker is consistently true, and he remains faithful to Tolkien's overall vision. IfReturnsuffers from too many endings, as some critic suggested, it's only because the epic's conclusion is so loyally inclusive of the actors--most notably Astin--who gave it such strength to begin with. By ending theLOTRtrilogy with noble integrity and faith in the power of imaginative storytelling,The Return of the King, like its predecessors, will stand as an adventure for the ages.--Jeff Shannon

(Essential for B5 Fans)

(Movie collection is great)

(Babylon 5 - the Movie Collection - Excellent!)

(Excellant)

(Some good, some lousy)
This is a no-brainer for fans of Babylon 5.

B5 fans, if all you've got are seasons 1-5 on DVD, you don't have enough.

Get this.

Bias alert: I have been a Babylon 5 fan from the start. Thought the origional movie was good when it was released in syndication back in'93(?). Have enjoyed every episode ever since. These movies are no exception.
If you are a B-5 fan, then these movies are a need-to-view. Each one enhances the B-5 mythos in its own way. Don't hesitate to add to your B-5 collection. Worth watching again and again.
This product was shipped promptly and perfectly new condition. I think the shipping may have caused couple of DVD's to shift but luckily none were scratched. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys science fiction.
Loved In the Beginning and Third Space. The other three were duds. We own the complete 5 seasons and dearly love B5. Two stars because only two movies are worth watching. And Martin Sheen is TERRIBLE. Gawd, who cast him in this? He walks around like his contacts don't fit and can't decide what kind of accent he should have. Painful to watch.

TheBabylon 5pilot movieThe Gatheringwas originally broadcast in 1993 a full year ahead of the regular show. A somewhat dull tale of an attempt to assassinate Koch, the Vorlon ambassador toB5, the feature served to introduce Commander Jeffery Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) and Security Chief Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) as well as familiarize the audience with the unique environment of a five-mile-long space station in the year 2257. Missing many of the main cast, and suffering from a leaden pace and mediocre music score, series creator J Michael Straczynski later improvedThe Gatheringby tightening the cut for a special edition (the version released on DVD), adding some deleted character moments and commissioning a new score from series composer Christopher Franke.

Four new TV movies were part of the deal to syndicateBabylon 5.In the Beginningis a prelude set 10 years beforeBabylon 5, telling the story of the Earth-Minbari war. Told retrospectively, many of the mysteries revealed gradually in the main series are recounted, making the show a collection of spoilers for newcomers while adding little for established fans. It is effective to see events only previously talked about, and enjoyable to have most of the main cast playing younger versions of themselves.River of Soulsis a self-contained adventure featuring a return of the Soul Hunters from Season One, whileThirdspaceoffers a spectacular Lovecraftian space opera which slots into the saga after the end of the Shadow War.A Call to Armsis the most important of the TV films, laying the ground for the future TV seriesCrusade. Set five years after the Shadow War, it tells the story of a Drahk revenge attack on Earth. A final showcase for Bruce Boxleitner as Sheridan, the story fits between fifth-season episodes "Objects at Rest" and "Sleeping in Light." The cliffhanger ending sets the scene for new starshipExcaliburto boldly go on a five-year mission to explore strange new worlds and find a cure for the Shadow virus infecting the Earth.--Gary S. (I love this movie -- just ordered the new blu-ray release!!!!!)

(rubbish.....)

(B.S.Ending!)

(No one's seeing it for what it is!)
I am a loyal customer a Amazon.com, I am very glad to mention to all of the global customer that i am very much impressed with the picture quality, product quality, and the awesome service provided by the amazon globally, i truly recommend to all the global customer to take the advantage of the amazon.
It seems that people either LOVE or HATE this movie -- there's no real middle ground for this one. I love it and just wanted to add my positive vote!! I actually ordered the new blu-ray release, and that says a LOT, because I rarely buy dvds. I just love the special effects in this movie -- the vampires are so much fun to watch -- I love the lights constantly going in Frankenstein's head -- can't wait to see the blu-ray version on my new 65 inch TV!!
... simply put......... rubbish.

The amount of Money spent on this film....... decadently sickening!

The Script....... flawed, flat, numb.

The Direction........ Lame!!!!!

The actors....... tried hard to save it! but failed miserably!

The Computer FX.......... beyond woeful! ....this stretchy, movement blur thing is ruining all the reality of film - give me practical fx anyday! ...you losers who enjoy this green screen fake reality - go play a COMPUTER GAME! Films were meant to be real - sets - locations - special effects = aimed to extend our perception of reality - not this lifeless, dull, gamer orientated rubbish which upon conclusion, really just ends up being disrespectful to the old horror masters they tried to impress!

If someone aims to HOMAGE the classic HORROR films of the golden age of horror - for godsake don't sell out like these fakers....

go buy the original classics and put this where it belongs.... the bin!

This just shows that Hollywood can't think of a dawm thing to put on the Big Silver Screen. DRACULA KILLED by a bite from the Wolfman, what a load of Bull S. Dracula is a shape shifter who can change to any creature of the night including Werewolves. So, why the you know the F#*@ would Werewolf bite kill a being that's already dead or undead? Because Hollywood couldn't think of a way for the villian to be disposed of dramaticlly. Hollywood stick to the source material and stop creating a lot of BULL!!!
Van Helsing is one of the most over the top action movies I've ever seen. It's got in your face CGI and a ridiculous plot with cheesy acting. But that's what makes it so damn good. Like other reviewers have said who liked it, it's a nod to the oldies with the new technological makeover and it's a helluva lot of fun to watch...again and again. I understand how people don't like this movie. I may seem like I have horrible taste in movies by loving this, but I like a good Se7en, Silence of the Lambs, or The Shawshank Redemption, much smarter, much more mature and provocative works that stay with you for a while. This movie is the kind where I can just relax, not think too much, and just enjoy and adrenaline-filled, visual effects laden, awesome adventure. I thought the production design was super cool, and at least I could tell a lot of people working on this movie put love into what they were doing. Haha I know that sounds so stupid but I thought so. I'm just puttin down my thoughts on this because I don't want everyone to expect and judge this movie because it's not as smart or well constructed as other, better movies. This one is just F-ing fun. Pardon my French.
Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 08/08/2006 Run time: 132 minutes Rating: Pg13
Like a roller coaster ready to fly off its rails,Van Helsingrockets to maximum velocity and never slows down. Having earned blockbuster clout withThe MummyandThe Mummy Returns, writer-director Stephen Sommers once again plunders Universal's monster vault and pulls out all the stops for this mammoth $148-million action-adventure-horror-comedy, which opens (sanscredits) with a terrific black-and-white prologue that pays homage to the Universal horror classics that inspired it. The plot pits legendary vampire hunter Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) against Dracula (the deliciously campy Richard Roxburgh), his deadly blood-sucking brides, and the Wolfman (Will Kemp) in a two-hour parade of outstanding special effects (980 in all) that turn Sommers' juvenile plot into a triple-overtime bonus for CGI animators. In alliance with a Transylvanian princess (Kate Beckinsale) and the Frankenstein monster (Shuler Hensley), Van Helsing must prevent Dracula from hatching his bat-winged progeny, and there's so much good-humored action that you're guaranteed to be thrilledandexhausted by the time the 10-minute end-credits roll. It's loud, obnoxious, filled with revisionist horror folklore, and aimed at addicted gamers and eight-year-olds, but this colossal monster mash (including Mr. Hyde, just for kicks) will never, everbore you. A sequel is virtually guaranteed.--Jeff Shannon

(Once Underestimated, Now Overestimated?)

(The hobo Philosopher)

(One of two best editions -- the 1818 text)

(Gothic at its best)

(Excellent Extras)
It is a classic and, therefore, deserves a close reading. Norton editions are great. The text size is good, the print tends to be first-rate, and the critical essays usually include classic essays and major critics. This doesn't strike me as being worthy of the "A" list of literature, but that is a prejudice. I can't really accept any genre lit on the list, including detective, gothic, or science fiction. It is an interesting sample of this period, but I didn't get a lot out the the book itself. For one thing, the atmosphere of doom and gloom doesn't work for me. Everyone is sick and morbidly depressed and sad. This is not explained and I don't think one can easily guess. The writing works, sure, but I don't find the prose style uplifting or thrilling, as writing. The story is very familiar. As a child of the 60s, I remember well watching reruns of the classic film on TV. It is hard to divorce the brilliant film from the wordy novel. The film has some brilliant set-pieces. The novel has a lot in it and it certainly can and should be read at multiple levels, but in the end it is Victorian intellectual thought of the low order. There are other, better thinkers and novelists of far greater talent.
This is a classic and that is the reason that I read it. I liked the movie but the book is a whole other experience. I liked the format; I like the style; I liked the prose; I liked the intellectuality. I really didn't analyze it. I just read it for the fun of it. It was good. It was fun.

Frankenstein is a great work, though one that has consistently been underrated
and misrepresented. Frankenstein is, in the words of Donald H. Reiman, "the
most seminal literary work of the Romantic period". It is a work of profound
and radical ideas, written in poetically powerful prose. Frankenstein is not
really a gothic novel, although its author sometimes employs gothic
conventions and language, and even spoofs them. Rather, Frankenstein is an
enduring myth, a novel of ideas, and above all, a moral allegory about the
evil effects of intolerance and prejudice, ostracism and alienation, both to
the victims of intolerance and to society at large.
Since there are some good reviews here, I'll concentrate on this
particular edition -- the Norton Critical Edition, edited by J. Paul Hunter.
This is one of the two best editions of Frankenstein available (the other
being the Chicago edition edited by James Rieger). Most importantly, this is
the original 1818 edition, rather than the inferior, bowdlerized 1831
edition -- which is the most common, and the only one that was available for
well over a century. Hunter's introduction is not bad. Some of the reviews
and essays in the back are good, and some are not, but this is par for the
course. The main text is intelligently annotated.
Please check out my own book, The Man Who Wrote Frankenstein, which
makes the case that Frankenstein was really written by Percy Bysshe Shelley,
one of the greatest poets in the English language. I also argue that male
love, both idealized and demonized, is a central theme of Frankenstein.

Mary Shelley was the daughter of the famous feminist and author, Mary Wollstonecraft, who is best known for her work The Vindication of the Rights of Women. In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, a young university student, Victor Frankenstein, obsesses with wanting to know the secret to life. He studies chemistry and natural philosophy with the goal of being able to create a human out of spare body parts. After months of constant work in his laboratory, Frankenstein attains his goal and brings his creation to life. Frankenstein is immediately overwrought by fear and remorse at the sight of his creation, a "monster." The next morning, he decides to destroy his creation but finds that the monster has escaped. The monster, unlike other humans, has no social preparation or education; thus, it is unequipped to take care of itself either physically or emotionally. The monster lives in the forest like an animal without knowledge of "self" or understanding of its surroundings. The monster happens upon a hut inhabited by a poor family and is able to find shelter in a shed adjacent to the hut. For several months, the monster starts to gain knowledge of human life by observing the daily life of the hut's inhabitants through a crack in the wall. The monster's education of language and letters begins when he listens to one of them learning the French language. During this period, the monster also learns of human society and comes to the realization that he is grotesque and alone in the world. Armed with his newfound ability to read, he reads three books that he found in a leather satchel in the woods. Goethe's Sorrows of Young Werther, Milton's Paradise Lost, and a volume of Plutarch's Lives. The monster, not knowing any better, read these books thinking them to be facts about human history. From Plutarch's works, he learns of humankind's virtues. However, it is Paradise Lost that has a most interesting effect on the monster's understanding of self. The monster at first identifies with Adam, "I was apparently united by no link to any other being in existence." The monster, armed only with his limited education, thought that he would introduce himself to the cottagers and depend on their virtue and benevolence; traits he believed from his readings that all humans possessed. However, soon after his first encounter with the cottagers, he is beaten and chased off because his ugliness frightens people. The monster is overwrought by a feeling of perplexity by this reaction, since he thought he would gain their trust and love, which he observed them generously give to each other on so many occasions. He receives further confirmation of how his ugliness repels people when, sometime later, he saves a young girl from drowning and the girl's father shoots at him because he is frightful to look at. The monster quickly realizes that the books really lied to him. He found no benevolence or virtue among humans, even from his creator. At every turn in his life, humans are judging him solely based on his looks. The monster soon realizes that it is not Adam, the perfect being enjoying the world, which he is most alike. Instead, he comes to realize that he most represents Satan. The monster is jealous of the happiness he sees humans enjoy that he has never attained for himself. The monster tells Frankenstein that he found his lab journal in his coat pocket and read it with increasing hate and despair as he came to understand what Frankenstein's intent was in creating him. The monster curses Frankenstein for making a creature so hideous that even his creator turned from him in disgust.

Shelley's intent here is plain to see. "The fate of the monster suggests that proficiency in `the art of language' as he calls it, may not ensure one's position as a member of the `human kingdom." In a sense, she is showing that both her parents were mistaken when they advocated greater education reform for people. They thought education would make people better, which in turn would improve society for all. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein contradicts this belief.

Starting with the full title of Mary Shelley's book, Frankenstein: or The Modern Prometheus one can instantly see that mythology was integral to her book. Lord Byron, poet and friend of the Shelley's was writing a poem entitled Prometheus, and Mary was reading the Prometheus legend in Aeschylus' works when she had a dream, which was the impetus for her book. The Greek god Prometheus, is known for two important tasks that he performed, he created man from clay, and he stole fire from the gods and gave it to man. The stealing of fire really angered Zeus because the giving of fire began an era of enlightenment for humankind. Zeus punished Prometheus by having him carried to a mountain, where an eagle would pick at his liver; it would grow back each day and the eagle would eat it again.

The presence of fire and light in this gothic story helps to point to the similarities to Prometheus and Victor Frankenstein, the creator of the monster, in Shelley's book. The book uses light as a symbol of discovery, knowledge, and enlightenment. The natural world is full of hidden passages, and dark unknown scientific secrets; Victor's goal as a scientist is to grasp towards the light. Light is a by-product of fire that the monster learned quickly when he is living on his own. The monster experienced fires' duality when he first encountered it in an unattended fire in the woods. He is mesmerized by the fact that fire produces light in the darkness in the woods, but is shocked at the sensation of pain it gives him when he touches it. Victor is defiant of god in the same way that Prometheus was defiant of Zeus. Victor steals the secret of life from god and creates a human out of spare body parts. He does this out of an altruistic wish to spare humankind from the pain and suffering of death. Thus, Victor Frankenstein embodies both aspects of the Promethean myth creation and fire. Victor in a sense has the same experience with the fire of enlightenment similar to his monster; he is "burned" by the fire of enlightenment. Victor also suffers from the classic Greek tragic condition of hubris for his transgression against god and nature.

The book also adopts two other great mythic legends. One is Adam from the Bible. Victor Frankenstein bears striking resemblance to Adam and his fall from grace for eating the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. The other is Satan, a mythic figure that Shelley admired from her readings in Milton's book Paradise Lost. In an interesting juxtaposition of booth myths, she expands on the motif of the fall from grace in her book when she portrays the monster comparing himself to Adam; after he read, Milton's book Paradise Lost. The monster tells Victor, that he at first identifies with Adam God's first creation. "I was apparently united by no link to any other being in existence." However, after several incidents of mistreatment that he suffered from the humans he encountered in his travels; the monster soon realized that it is not Adam, the perfect being enjoying the world, which he was most alike. Instead, he came to realize that he most represented Satan. The monster's feelings of hatred and despair stem from the fact that humans found him grotesque to look at and would not accept him as a member of human society. The monster cursed Victor for making a creature so hideous that even his creator turned from him in disgust. Thus, it is obvious for all to see that Shelley's Frankenstein is replete with mythological references and they are central to the plot.

This was required reading for a graduate course in the Humanities. Recommended reading for anyone interested in history, psychology, philosophy, and literature.

The chronological table in the back of the book helped me situate Mary Shelley within the time of the writing of Frankenstein. Percy B. Shelley's critique of the book, published after he died, was interesting. I liked the Criticisms in the back of the book. Most of all, I loved the Being Frankenstein created. This is the saddest, most thought provoking, book I've read in recent times (even though it's old).
The text of this Norton Critical Edition is that of the 1818 first edition, published in three volumes by Lackington, Hughes, Harding, Mavor, and Jones, in which only obvious typographical errors have been corrected. This text represents whatFrankenstein's first readers encountered and is the text favored by scholars. A special critical section, Composition and Revision, includes essays by M. K. Joseph and Anne Mellor that address the issues surrounding teachers' choice of text. Contemporary perspectives of the text are provided in two sections: Contexts helps place the novel in relation to the mind of its creator through writings by Mary Shelley, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, and John William Polidori; Nineteenth-Century Responses collects six reactions to the book from the years 1818 to 1886. Criticism brings together twelve seminal essays. The emphasis is on range—both critical (psychoanalytic, mythic, new historicist, and feminist essays are included) and chronological (essays span the last thirty years). Christopher Small, George Lebine, Ellen Moers, Sandra M. Gilbert and Susan Gubar, Barbara Johnson, Mary Poovey, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, William Veeder, Anne K. Mellor, Susan Winnett, Marilyn Butler, and Lawrence Lipking provide diverse perspectives. A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are also included.

(Fun Stories)

(ridiculous!!!)

(The Greatest Novel of All Time!)
I enjoyed all of these stories immensely.

I will say that I like Konrath's contributions the most.

Unfortunately, this did not make me want to purchase the books that feature the Mayhem character. He was okay in small doses, but I don't think that I could wade through an entire book with him as the main character.

It's my understanding that Konrath's Harry is just a side character in his Jack Daniels' series, so I'm going to give that one a try.

The editing was terrific! It's so nice to see that people CAN self-publish and still provide us with clean, edited work. Other self-published authors should take a page from the books of these two, well, not literally, but you get the picture.

I kept my wife up last night reading this book. I kept laughing out loud!! I love a book that is witty, ridiculous, and gets the joke. Kudos to both authors, I'm on my way to order books by both of them!!
Okay, I'm not being totally honest.

In fact, only half of this novel is the greatest of all time. The half written by me, JA Konrath.

The part written by Jeff Strand is... well...

At least he conjugates his verbs correctly. Most of the time, anyway.

The point is, if you're a fan of my Lt. Jack Daniels books Whiskey Sour (A Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels Mystery) then you know about Jack's ex-partner, Harry McGlade.

In this ebook, Harry teams up with Jeff Strand's character, Andrew Mayhem Graverobbers Wanted (No Experience Necessary) for the greatest Kindle Bargain of the century! Over 53,000 words of funniness and laughosity.

Also available is a highly overpriced 100 page hardcover limited edition made from dead trees.

You should buy them both.

The ebook has extra content.

The dead tree limited edition (did I mention it's a limited edition?) will certainly attain "must-have collectible" status and you'll be able to sell it on eBay for tens of millions of dollars when I'm super-famous.

Trust me. I'm a writer. I know these things.

There's always the chance Strand might get famous, too. Anything can happen.

So buy your copy today.

Masters of the comedy thriller genre, J.A. Konrath and Jeff Strand, team up for the humorous horror novella Suckers.

Strand's perpetually unlucky character Andrew Mayhem, star of the novels Graverobbers Wanted (No Experience Necessary), Single White Psychopath Seeks Same, and Casket For Sale (Only Used Once), sets off on a simple mission at the request of his wife: Get some spaghetti sauce.

On his way to the store he meets Konrath's obnoxious private eye Harry McGlade, co-star of the Lt. Jack Daniels thrillers Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Fuzzy Navel, and Cherry Bomb.

Horrific violence, bad jokes, and lots of name calling soon ensues. Some sex, too, but not between the main characters.

Originally, published as a very expensive limited-edition hardcover, Suckers is now available as a super cheap ebook.

But the fun doesn't stop there.

Also included in this ebook are six other Mayhem and McGlade stories, many of them rare and long out of print.

Whelp Wanted - JA Konrath
Poor Career Choice - Jeff Strand
Taken to the Cleaners - JA Konrath
A Bit of Halloween Mayhem - Jeff Strand
The Necro File - JA Konrath
The Lost (For a Good Reason) Adventure of Andrew Mayhem - Jeff Strand

If that's not enough to get you to part with your pocket change, this ebook also includes two brand new introductions written by the authors, and an exclusive Strand/Konrath interview.

That's over 53,000 words worth of demented entertainment, for half the price of a kiddie meal at that fast food restaurant with the scary clown. It's also 1/3 of the calories.

Warning: Some of the jokes (mostly Konrath's) push the boundaries of good taste. Don't buy this if you're easily offended.

Here's what critics and bestselling authors have to say:

"JA Konrath is the greatest writer who ever lived!" -- Jeff Strand, published author of Benjamin's Parasite

"No, no, Jeff Strand is way better!" -- JA Konrath, published author of Whiskey Sour

"I officially withdraw my previous quote based on new information provided by JA Konrath's quote. Jeff Strand is the greatest writer who ever lived!" -- Jeff Strand, published author of The Sinister Mr. Corpse

"Of course, Jack Kilborn is better than both of us combined and mixed with a side helping of the Bronte sisters." -- JA Konrath, published author of the more mediocre half of Suckers

"Well, duh." -- Jeff Strand, published author of the half of Suckers that's okay, sort of, if your expectations aren't too high.

(Great Title not so Great Stories)

(Great introduction to the author)
Some of the stories were interesting especially hope you enjoy a little bit of cannibalism. Many ICK! moments. Some just made you want your time back and an eraser for your brain. Disturb, Origin and Afraid (Jack Kilborn) are excellent and way better Konrath choices.
I picked this book up out of curiosity and was very impressed. A few of the stories in the horror section were a bit too graphic for my taste, but they were very clearly marked and all of the stories certainly left an impression. The first section of the stories involved characters from Mr. Konrath's "Jack Daniels" crime series. The stories could be followed without any knowledge of the series and they interested me enough that the first book of the series is on my Kindle waiting to be read. I'll definitely read more books by this author.
For a limited time only $1.89.

JA Konrath, author of the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thrilller series (Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb) offers a gigantic 128,000 word collection of fifty-five previously published short stories from the thriller, horror, and comedy genres, including many from his award-winning series.

Stories to make you laugh, scream, cringe, think, scratch your head, and roll your eyes. This collection has something to please every type of Kindle reader, and is an inexpensive way to get introduced to the author and his work.
