customer 's review (Intimate is a FABULOUS CD!) This is ideal music for easy listening. It plays well as background, or for intent listening. Eleanor McCain has a beautiful voice that she employs well. Her songs are well-chosen&have depth&meaning. Fortunately, she doesn't try to showcase her entire range in each song, like some other talented singers such as Celine Dion, Whitney Houston&Mariah Carey. This makes Eleanor far more pallitable for extended listening. She outshines almost all other female vocalists. Her CD's are hard to find, so if you see one, buy it. You won't regret it!!! I would love to see more from this artist, including original works!

(Decent science fiction/horror film based on "true events")
(Fair movie with a crummy ending)
(Watch the Night Skies)
(Look to the Skies.) Who cares at this point. This movie was better than the reviews. The acting was solid. Should we believe all abductees are returned to earth. I know, from a personal experience, that these beings exist. I got off track. I enjoyed the film and certainly thought it believable. I am unable to find information supporting the movie to be fact-based. _Night Skies_ was a decent enough science fiction film, though I agree with the reviewer Wayne Beckham that the movie is really more horror than science fiction.
The movie claimed that it is based on true events, one event pretty well documented, the other news to me. The documented one was the March 13, 1997 sighting and filming of unidentified lights in the Arizona night sky by thousands of people, a sighting still debated by some to this day. I liked the incorporation of this event into the movie, both the use of actual footage from the sighting and the movie's well done special effects depiction of the lights as seen by the characters in the film. I also liked - and was surprised - by the inclusion in the first few moments of the movie of Senator John McCain being asked in a press conference about the lights, that was well done (and unlike the trickery used to include President Bill Clinton in the movie _Contact_, was using footage directly related to what the movie was about).
The other event, not something I had heard about previously, was the story of a Gulf War veteran, stranded on a backroad in very rural Arizona and the five people in a RV who ran into him. Both vehicles disabled, the soldier and the people in the RV (a married couple, a couple that was engaged, and the sister to one of the men) at first mostly bicker about whose fault it is, try to save the life of the one of the men in the RV who was severely injured in the crash of the RV, and try to get the vehicle repaired to get him to the hospital. Soon however it becomes clear that there is something in the woods, something sinister, one that can play tricks with their minds, make them see things that aren't there, and one by one try to pick off and abduct the various members of this thrown-together group.
The feeling of the film - the briefly glimpsed aliens, people and things suddenly appearing behind people, the rustling in the brush, the screaming, the running, and yes some of the blood - had more in common with a horror movie than a typical science fiction movie (not that that is a bad thing). The alien's motivations were sinister, to abduct the humans (causing maximum terror while doing it, naturally) and them probe them horrifically in their spaceship (which was suitable creepy and organic and gooey in make-up).
Not a bad film I guess, I would rate is as good as some of the best of the much improved Sci Fi Saturday night movies of the week. The alien make up was pretty well done, the lights in the sky were very eerie, and I will admit it, one of the girls, the sister, was very good-looking (Ashley Peldon was the actress's name, playing the character Molly). While her character was not particularly deep she was not unpleasant to look at. Overall though the acting was adequate, nothing spectacular though not awful either. I didn't like the way the opening credits were done, a diced-up montage in almost slow motion of a horror scene from later in the movie, it made the film feel to me at least cheaper and more poorly done than it really was. Production values were not bad and if alien abduction movies are your thing (or the _X-Files_) I would say give it a look. Some kids are driving in an RV on some back roads. They notice some lights in the sky, then they crash into a pickup truck that's parked next to the road. One guy falls on a knife that was lying on the floor. Luckily the guy who was driving the pickup knows some first aid, and fixes him up using super glue. Yeah, he probably hasn't got long to live, LOL. Everybody else is pretty unconcerned with their mortally wounded "friend", and spend most of the movie discussing their relationship problems. Then some aliens start...appearing. They might as well be Bigfoot or maybe even mind-controlling evil trolls, it doesn't really matter. It's not like they do anything "alien" to these people other than terrorize them a bit. Kind of funny actually, they can travel all the way here from another planet yet they can't break through the door on an RV.
After a somewhat exciting scene with the RV being attacked by something from outside, we move on to the next part of the movie - I won't spoil it - but suffice it to say I was expecting another ten or fifteen minutes before the movie eventually built to its climax. Instead, it just ended. Yup, roll credits, we're done here. What happened to half the characters? Don't know, we're through, wrap it up already.
The characters were mildly interesting, the plot was fairly disappointing because it relied on people getting confused (or maybe their minds were being controlled?). Eh, doesn't really matter I guess. Overall, I've seen much worse, but that doesn't mean this thing is especially good either. Good for a boring Tuesday night when you're not really expecting anything too exciting anyway. This is an excellent 'B' movie. I liked it better than 'Fire In the Sky'. Decent acting. Scary and lots of fun. A fun film that scared me plenty.
Some friends are on a cross-country trip when a tire blows out and they are stranded on the road. One of the friends is badly wounded by a falling knife and is in critical condition. A passer by stops to help them and turns out to be an ex soldier with medica training(yeah Right). All is going well until they try to find the locals in the forest and are attacked by none other than giant-black eyed, Gray, skinny aliens. They run back to the RV and wait in there for morning. After several shocks and jump-in-your seats. they decide to fight back and end up getting. Eventually they are all Abducted and awake up in a strange organic enviroment and find themselves being studied and not inh the good way. The story ends there.
When i rented this from the video store i thought it was just another friday night crap filled fun film to hit of the weekend with. I was suprised by its quality and the impressive character design and banter between them. Its your classic Abduction Story. ABC News(2009-05-06)
Usually ships in 1 to 2 days There's tremendous excitement about this year's election. People say that their candidate will fix America. Senator Barack Obama has inspired idol worship that's usually lavished on rock stars. At the Republican convention, one man told John Stossel that Senator John McCain was like ''Superman.'' Stossel says, ''Give me a break,'' politicians' ''fixes'' often have unintended consequences that are worse than the original problem. Do we really need a president to plan our lives, to direct us? Or does most of life work best when you are in charge?
Reports include: -Spontaneous Order: Most of life is governed by spontaneous order. It regulates how we choose our jobs, hobbies, lovers, recreation and most of the rest of our lives. It runs most of the economy. When Stossel tries to ''govern'' a skating rink filled with expert and beginner skaters (he shouts orders with a bullhorn), skaters hate it. Some fall. A politician observing the problem might say: ''We need to elect a more expert leader.'' Stossel tries that by giving the bullhorn to Olympic gold medalist Brian Boitano. But he does no better.
-New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina: After a disaster, people desperately want government help. FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is a fulltime specialist in disaster relief. Why do they so often disappoint? Stossel compares Wal-Mart's and FEMA's response to hurricane Katrina. He investigates why Wal-Mart delivered water to people while FEMA bureaucrats dithered.
-Campaign Finance Reform: Campaign finance law, like all our government's laws, is subject to a still more powerful law: the law of unintended consequences. Stossel reports that campaign finance reform has actually made it harder for the little guy to have his voice heard. For all its complications, what has ''reform'' accomplished?
-Farm Subsidies: ABC News talks to Maurice Wilder, who's been America's single largest recipient of farm subsidies. Our farm policy was supposed to save small farmers and small towns. Instead, Stossel says it fuels the expansion of industrial mega-farms and the depopulation of rural America.
-Who will run America?: Listening to the media and the political class, one would think the election is about who will ''run America.'' But Stossel says politicians don't run the country. What happens in the White House matters less than what happens in your house.

customer 's review (Review of "Return With Honor")
(The Courage Of The Human Spirit Defined)
(One of the best you'll ever see.)
(Very well done)
(Not Forgotten) This DVD provides an outstanding overview of what our POWs went through in Vietnam. Tom Hanks did an excellent job in producing this program. I know a number of the returned POWs and found the DVD to be very accurate. An inspiring story! I highly recommend it! "Return With Honor" is a documentary that everyone should see. Unlike a typical war documentary, this focuses on the inner strengths and emotions of the military men in question, in this case American pilots shot down, imprisoned, and tortured in North Vietnam. I have been privileged to have met many pilots who flew in Vietnam, and a handful of POW's, and can attest that without exception, these are a truly exceptional group of men: this documentary brings their story to life better than any other.
The film profiles multiple prisoners with both current interviews and vintage footage, much of it from North Vietnamese archives (the North Vietnamese film of an F-105 on fire still haunts me). The ultimate lessons here are of courage, the indestructibility of the human spirit, and honor. Despite brutal torture these men had a strict code of honor, and although many were offered early releases in exchange for propaganda useful to the North Vietnamese, their motto was "Return With Honor" and they lived up to it. Far from being mindless military automatons as they were (and still sometimes are) frequently depicted, these men had a keenly intelligent and insightful world view. One thing that amazed me was the degree of forgiveness that the men themselves had for their former captors: one even became the first US Ambassador to Vietnam after political relations were restored. As for specifics, I was disappointed that Leo Thorsness, F-105 pilot and Medal of Honor winner, was not profiled, but I was considerably more impressed with John McCain after viewing this documentary than I previously had been.
The extras on the DVD are all worth watching. I especially liked the biographies of all the men profiled and the "making of" feature. I was amazed by the amount of cooperation and freedom the filmmakers received from the government of Vietnam, and was impressed by the fact that Pete Peterson, a man imprisoned in Hanoi for over six years, was appointed and accepted the Ambassadorship to Vietnam in 1997. Truly the ability of humans to heal and forgive is a wonderful thing and this film shows better than any other I can recall the indomitable nature of the human spirit. One of the best war documentaries I have ever seen.
US pilots held as POW's in North Vietnam for years and years.
Interviews, footage of the time (US and North Vietnamese), illustrations of torture tactics, and a narrative structure that keeps you riveted.
I've watched this one many times.
See it. As an educator, I have looked for different videos that cover the POW experience. Either they concentrate too much on the political and downplay the human element or they try to tell too much at one time.
This video is the best I have seen. In an hour, it explains the POW issue from the prisoners themselves. It is real, it is emotional, it is hard to watch and hear the stories but it lets the story tell itself without a lot of commentary from historians who weren't there.
Excellent. I would recommend this to anyone who teaches Vietnam in the classroom or to anyone interested in the POW experience. A classic in the genre of Vietnam documentaries. This 1999 film is about American POW airmen, and their ordeal throughout the Vietnam war. What I love about this film is that there is no political angle - these men tell their own stories in their own words, framed by America at the time. No one can walk away from this film and not feel touched. Men who piloted the hottest fighter planes in the world found themselves suddenly transformed from hotshots to humiliated prisoners during the Vietnam War. The story of how American prisoners survived in North Vietnam's notorious prison camps is dramatically told in this documentary, an installment of theAmerican Experienceseries on PBS. The men, who survived appalling treatment, relate their experiences, and vintage footage, including propaganda films shot by their captors, portrays what they endured. A former POW describes how he was coached before being put on public display, yet he spelled out the word "torture" in Morse code by blinking his eyes, a defiant action that can clearly be seen in footage that the North Vietnamese provided to the world's media. Another former prisoner, who somehow survived massive injuries despite being denied medical care, describes how he had to lie on the concrete floor of his cell for nearly a year, just trying to get his arms and legs to function again. These inspirational stories lead up to an emotional climax as the prisoners, including Arizona Senator John McCain, describe what it was like to be freed after their long captivity. This is a deeply moving and inspiring story told by men who overcame great depths of human suffering.--Robert J. McNamara Rerations < Return with Honor >

(A Must-Read for Educators)
(Future)
(Let's have a person with Asperger Syndrome predict our futures.)
(Good book for teachers) Although outdated (2001) as far as technology books go, it is an easy read. Rather interesting and informative. While I understand the point made by other reviewers in terms of the book being outdated due to the very arguments presented by McCain and Jukes (the exponential rate of change), I still feel that this book should be read by all educators. The points covered are presented in clear terms with excellent examples and in a way that all can understand. I read this book for a class and then used it with my own students (teachers)who experienced an 'awakening' of sorts while reading the book. Many places around the world have been slow to change - the 'blue whales' which McCain and Jukes refer to as examples of people or things that take a longer time to change. So this book was extremely enlightening for the teachers who work in a very remote Pacific island area where teaching methods have changed very little with the teacher still being the 'giver' of information. The concepts covered can challenge the minds or paradigm. As stated by the authors, "{The education system} cannot continue to get better at delivering an obsolete education" (p. 74). Statements such as these present excellent forums for discussion among educators. The book offers some insight into the future of education. However, the authors are victims of their paradigm since the book was obsolete as soon as it was printed. It is an easy read and does provide some food for thought.
Windows on the Future: Education in the Age of Technology How many times can I say pompous? These authors have so inflated their egos that I can not imagine sharing a room with them. I certainly would not want to share an office or any job with them.
The authors love "technology" - and that can be a good thing. However, they so completely mix up the means and the ends. In teaching a well educated student is the "ends" or our product. Give me a tent and something to scrawl on and a good teacher will put out a good product: a well educated student.
Technology is a tool we can use. Just like any other tool when people see someone using it, AND it improves the job in some manner they will switch over to the new method. The emphasis on technology is wasteful. All, yes 100%, of the information this book is devoted to can be picked up by anyone in a single semester course.
This is from a teacher who: always uses an electronic grade book, posts assignments and other information on my web page, has converted almost all of my lectures into PowerPoint presentations filled with pictures, QuickTime video shorts, links to current events in the news. My students have assignments which require internet research. Some of their assignments they can access from anywhere (on vacation in New Zealand!), at any time, with or with out partners, and can use a wide variety of resources.
My students score well on state tests, actually really well. However, with no "technology" (a tent and some chalk and slates) they will still do well.
Let's not confuse the tools with the real job, and these tools are VERY easy to learn. If it makes sense people will do it, use it - if not - they SHOULD not. While I liked the book, and certainly agreed with much the authors said, I found little new (but I'm a techie, so others shouldn't be turned away from it on that account.). It's a really good book for teachers who are being inundated with technology and feeling a bit uncomfortable with that. The authors share their wisdom and experience, for our benefit.
Foreword by David D. Thornburg Windows on the Futurewas designed to help the educator cope with changes created by technology and embrace a new mindset necessary to access the burgeoning technological advances. McCain and Jukes offer new paradigms and frameworks to keep schools and students relevant in the 21st Century. Critical issues explored include: - Key trends for the new millennium
- The power of paradigm
- Education in the future
- New skills for students
- New roles for educators
- The need for vision

(Legends of Winter Hill *****)
(A Breath of Fresh Air)
(Flavorful, fast-paced and entertaining) This book is a fantastic story of a Met Cop and his family on the North Shore/Boston Metro North area. I really enjoyed Mr. Atkinson's novel. He did a good job of telling the stories of Joe McCain as a Met Cop and P.I. Joe McCain was a shining example of a good cop and an example of the character that can only be developed in Boston. It was interesting all the rogues he would run into that we have come to know through the case of Whitey Bulger. I don't want to give away too much about the story because I highly encourage any true crime fan to read this book. I have reccomended this book to friends and no one was disapointed. One friend admitted he was brought to tears by the touching story. Buy this book, you will not regret it Jay Atkinson is to New England what William Faulkner is to the South (or, specifically, Yoknapatawpha County). Here, in similar fashion to his crowning achievement (to date), "Ice Time," Atkinson demonstrates an impeccable ability to chronicle the talking, walking, living, and dying of New Englanders in such vivid description where every page crackles with rich imagery and sounds.
Just as Ice Time isn't REALLY about hockey, Legends isn't REALLY about cops and con men. Both are about relationships and traditions. And, even where Atkinson puts himself in the stories being told, he always retains the position of discreet voyeur; demonstrating beneath his masculine persona a remarkable talent to convey the innermost joys and melancholy of his characters. That is where Atkinson lives, and he invites us all to come along. Any fan of great writing will accept the invitation. I thought that Atkinson did an outstanding job in depicting the Boston area and some of its most important members of the law enforcement community. Atkinson's vivid depictions of setting and his uncanny ear for authentic dialogue help to create a mesmerizing and hypnotic narrative about cop life and private investigation. In today's society, in which we find organized crime figures to be charming and endearing, and our heroes are limited to vapid low life reality television stars, Atkinsons tale of Joe McCain, a police officer to be truly admired, is a breath of fresh air. Okay, the title is a bit much. But I enjoyed this book tremendously. Some of the criticisms point to the elements I liked best. The routine cases, how they were approached, and the results were a revelation to someone who has no real idea of police work except what I've seen on "Cops" (constant action and crisis!). There was a new story on every page, and I wound up reading until 1 a.m. on a work day because I just couldn't help reading "one more page". The descriptions of the surroundings, the characters, the sounds and smells of the settings, conjured up a real sense of being there. I was fascinated by the character faults and virtues of the people in the book, as Atkinson tried to remain true to McCain's philosophy that most people aren't entirely good or bad. As a resident of the area, I finally understand the gang wars that were taking place when I was growing up (I remember the old Boston Record American newpaper with the crime scene photos splashed across the front). I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who lives in the Northeast, and to others who'd like a glimpse into how Boston politics are practiced in every profession! “At McCain Investigations, I’d be sent looking for people who didn’t want to be found, following guys who didn’t want to be followed, and entering neighborhoods where I was not at all welcome. There would be no commercials, no time-outs, no‘do-overs’ if somebody got shot or stabbed or run over. These guys were playing for keeps.”
Seasoned journalist and adventurer Jay Atkinson spent a year working as a rookie private eye for the storied firm McCain Investigations, founded by the late Joe McCain, Sr., one of the most decorated police officers in Boston history. In his colorful narrative style, Atkinson describes some of the cases he worked as a detective, chasing down an assortment of felons, thieves, and con artists, as well as the ghost of a real-life American hero, legendary cop Joe McCain.
Atkinson traces McCain’s story from the day he put on his Boston Metropolitan Police uniform in the 1950s through the heyday of his run-ins with mafiosi, bad cops, and ruthless killers. Big Joe was the genuine article, a detective so committed to his work that a gunshot wound suffered in the line of duty took thirteen years to kill him. McCain pursued such infamous Winter Hill mobsters as Stephen“the Rifleman” Flemmi and the murderous James“Whitey” Bulger, who remains on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list. Here Atkinson reveals new details—based on his exclusive interviews and an abundance of his own shoe leather—about how Bulger, one of America’s most notorious fugitives, came within inches of being apprehended during Joe McCain’s reign.
Atkinson also tracks the career of Joe McCain’s son, Joe Jr., a tattooed, hard-riding motorcycle fanatic who followed his old man onto the force. Since big Joe’s death, young Joe has learned the hard way that a father’s mythic persona can be both a blessing and a curse, as a fellow cop with a grudge against Joe Sr. may be out to ruin young Joe’s career. Atkinson delves into this dark and dangerous aspect of“the job,” where it’s uncertain which side some cops are on.
Legends of Winter Hilltakes you into an alluring and gritty world where heroes go unsung every day, and moral boundaries aren’t always black and white.
