If you love blues you will love this CD. Edwin McCain is a soulful singer and a joy to listen to.
As a McCain addict, I was so disappointed. Too much screeching, wailing, ... I just couldn't take it. Needs to get back to his roots.
It has been a while since Edwin has given us an album that showcases the rasp and rage and rumble of his voice and the depth of his musical roots. Born in Greenville, SC and steeped in his early performance days in Charleston, SC (with friends like Darius Rucker of Hootie and The Blowfish hitting the radio airwaves about the same time), Edwin has gone back to his roots and the music of his heart with this CD, and it shows in the final product.

Ed is more than a balladeer and more than a "two trick pony." This is the perfect album for a summer drive, a quiet night at home with someone you like, or as background music for a late summer barbeque or beachside bonfire. If you aren't swaying in your seat or bouncing around the family room with your kids by the fourth track, turn it up! All of us raised below the Mason-Dixon line (and many above!) will appreciate the production of this album, its mix of pop hits and little-known gems, and the unique but subtle re-working of these southern soul classics.

In this effort, an accomlished singer-songwriter has looked in the rearview mirror and honored those songwriters that gave him roots and wings. Pour the sweet tea (or Southern Comfort!), take your shoes off, and wiggle your toes in the warmth of this musical gift. It will be one of my favorites for years to come.

Edwin has a wonderful voice with a wide range. The band is awesome as well. Just saw him live, a great show....try not to miss it!
I couldn't agree more with what Groove Daddy has said about "Nobody's Fault But Mine". Read his review for the best details about this album. Those of us who are ole timey fans of EMB know all too well that Edwin has been grooving soulfully for years, but this particular album affords him the opportunity to spotlight the very music that sparked the musician in him from the start. What a gift, to be able to rejoice, revisit, and revive the creations that first gave you life! In this, Edwin does these treasures justice, and all those involved do their best work. If you say you are disappointed, you ain't got no soul baby! This is SOUL at it's best, but of course, we have been spoiled by EMB for years. We expect no less from our guys. They have out done themselves, thanks guys! If I were the original artists I could not be more honored by what these talented folks have put together. I can't help but say, if you aren't an Edwin fan, there MUST be something wrong with you. Drop your preconceived notions, close your eyes, open your ears, your mind, your heart, and you can't help but enjoy!!!

(The Greatest Album of All Time)

This is one of the best cd's of all time in my opinion. Edwin McCain is just the most beautiful singer there is...I can't say enough about how awesome his voice is, not to mention his songwriting. Every song on this cd is awesome...a truly wonderful blend of upbeat and romantic and thought provoking songs. You will need to buy two of these because one will get worn out from replaying it so often!

Bit of a stretch giving it a five star rating I originally thought, but it really does deserve it. There are a couple of five-star songs on this album - America Street, and the quieter, sorrowful Sorry to a Friend, but every other one is a four starrer or very close. You won't be bothered getting up to skip any of these tracks while you're listening to Honour Among Thieves, and that makes a pretty good album as far as I'm concerned.

If you like James Taylor, Nickel Creek, The Waifs, or the quieter stuff by Garth Brooks or Lee Kernaghan, you'll be well served by adding this to your collection.
Ediwn McCain's songwriting really shines on this album. The tracks "Sorry to a Friend" and "Solitude" are both destined to be classics among Ediwn McCain fans. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, he has only had a few radio hits; "I'll Be" being his most popular, and another great example of beautiful lyrics and songwriting, although on a different album.

The tracks range from bluesy folk to light rock. The lyrics are often sublime, and always intelligent. McCain's voice is like a glass of fine whiskey; edgy and smooth at the same time.

Excellent album for those looking for something accessible, yet mature and engaging.
This is the album that introduced Edwin McCain to the world, and it is a wonderful amalgam of rock, blues, and jazz, featuring acoustic and electric guitars perfectly blended with saxophones and woodwinds, layered with Edwin's beautfully powerful voice. There is no other album out there with this particular sound.

If you have ever loved an Edwin McCain song, then you simply must get this album. Unfortunately, the woodwinds abruptly disappeared on his next few albums, only to reappear in the latest "Scream and Whisper". You'll appreciate them here.
yup, this is it...the best of the best. Not even Edwin McCain has or will be able to outdo himself. This is what music is supposed to be. I will never get enough of it, it's just mind-blowing. Thank you Edwin for raising the bar, you define brilliance.

I wouldn't exaggerate about something like this: I listen to a LOT of music, genres ranging from straight ahead bebop to classic Reggae (Marley, Burning Spear) to modern "indie" music (Death Cab for Cutie, The Frames). I'm well-versed in the Grateful Dead (my dad was a deadhead) and the timeless music of The Beatles. Through it all, though, there are few voices and songwriting talents that really touch me like Edwin's. I love most all of his work (I think that Honor Among Thieves is tragically underrated, seeing as most haven't even heard of it). The song I'll Be is beautiful, but the bane of Edwin's existence all the same. If you want to hear one of the most genuine, organic, and honest voices in music today, find a way to get this album. He uses his real ability and emotion to make up for the potential lack in energy from limited production and instrumentation on this album. I've SEEN him in concert, at least four times, and I'm telling you ladies and gentlemen, he's the real deal. Rarely have I seen the passion he puts out at every live show in any other act, heavy or light. I'm done gushing now, just one more thing to say:
Without shame or exaggeration: I listened to this album on random as I fell asleep every single night for over a year. And I thanked my lucky stars everytime "Romeo and Juliet" came on before I drifed off.

Well, I guess I have to admit, I have NEVER heard a BAD Edwin CD. I just haven't. I LOVE good music; I have no patience for even mediocre music. This CD is one of Edwin's finest! ---

To go a step further, if you want to see how multi-talented Edwin McCain is, get Far From Over, too! I think what I love best about FFO is the fact that you can get EVERY STYLE of music there that Edwin performs. Jazz, Hard Rock, Soft Rock, Ballads, Folk, WHATEVER! BTW, anyone who has been touched in ANY way by adoption... given up a child for adoption, adopted a child or even been adopted... you need this CD. Edwin was adopted at birth by an amazingly wonderful and loving family. He does not know who his birth mother is. Listen to the song, "Letter to My Mother." It will just slay you. He is writing to his adopted Mom about how much he loves HER... and yet saying there is another woman out there that he loves... thanking her for giving him LIFE. AMAZING STORY, but an even more amazing song. Also, if you are a Christian, you will LOVE "Jesus, He Loves Me." It is a sort-of combination of Jesus Loves me and the Footprints poem. You can tell by listening that this is something coming from the depths of his spirit. He wrote and performed this song on the soundtrack, "Jesus: Music From&Inspired by the Epic Mini Series." This CD is also available on Amazon.com. Compare this song with the others, and tell me which one most openly tells about Jesus and His effect on a person's life. ---

Edwin is one-of-a-kind; a singer/songwriter like no other. Far From Over is one of the best EMB has ever given us. Just check out the sound clips above. It surpasses "I'll Be," {{{I LOVE THAT SONG!!!}}} AND "I Could Not Ask For More." Edwin Mccain shows he truly is talented beyond the studio and "fluff" today's musicians use to promote themselves. All of his music is good but this CD is exceptional. Why? Simply stated, it's acoustic and he is real. Someone commented about their disappointment that "the songs didn't sound like they do on the radio." Poppycock! They sound closer than any other "star" out there today. Edwin is down to earth and honest. His work shows it and his DVD's let you see it. I can only say, More, More, More! Please more!
I'm one of those music fans that enjoys alot of different music....I simply appreciate talent, especially with all of the manufactured music and entertainment that goes on. I'm a HUGE fan of Edwin McCain, and in the course of listening to all of his music, and going to his shows, I've also realized how amazingly talented his band is. I simply love the Austin Sessions CD, perhaps because I am already a fan, but the sound, his voice, the songs.....I just can't say enough. I highly recommend Edwin McCains music, and the Austin Sessions is the cherry!
I've always liked Edwin McCain, and I have a couple of his early CDs. But until I picked up this CD, I had no idea how absolutely talented this man was. I buy a lot of CDs, and this is easily the best one I've picked up this year. From"I Want it All"to"Beautiful Day"to an absolutely fabulous version of"Go Be Young,"there isn't a single bad song on this CD.

Just buy it, you will not be disappointed.
Balladeer Edwin McCain revisits his Jurassic period with his sixth outing, eschewing modern technology to return to an almost all-acoustic format he became comfortable with while gigging in the resort town of Hilton Head, South Carolina. But this album is a little less joyful than McCain's usual offerings, as he spins tales of missed opportunities, bad timing, and failed relationships. Even his cover selections seem dour. Dire Straits' "Romeo and Juliet" never sounded so tragic, and Buddy Mondlock's "No Choice" seems brittle and hopeless. Even the previously recorded "Go Be Young" is darkened by regret, while the gritty "Let It Slide" asserts, "You know Elvis said only two things were certain: hookers and Coupe Devilles." Perhaps being dropped by his long-time label has caused McCain to view the glass as half-empty; he cautions fans on "Alive" that "life's roller coaster, it ain't got no safety bar." This movie went a bit too slow for me, but overall, it was a good film. Made me cry a couple times when soem horrific things happened to the horse. But it was genuinely a well written story and Begley, Jr. is always a solid actor. The man is one of the greats of his era, as his Oscar winning father was a great in his. Tab Hunter did a great job with a small part. But his greatest film is: Track of the Cat.

Good movie especially for teens. The only parts I didn't like were the goofy"romantic"scenes between Ed Begley and Mimi Rogers...they had absolutely no on-screen chemistry. The interaction between the girl and the horse is great. Worthwhile.
I first saw the last 1/4 on Animal Planet on cable about a year ago. It stunned me and amazed me at the same time. I hunted high and low for a copy to no avail. I emailed Animal Planet and found out that it would be on again on President' s Day. The stupid VCR didn't work! I finally found a place that could order me a copy and it arrived today. I watched it all the way through. Amazing. A great family story if I've ever seen one. Buy this movie, you'll be SO glad you did!

(A truly campy classic)

This was probably the last great cheesy film to come out of the 80's. Any time it's on, I feel compelled to watch it through to the end. Far worse and more obscure films have been released on DVD, so why not release this one? I actually purchased the VHS several years ago. But this film would be a prime candidate for one of those 80's themed DVD 2-packs. Maybe they could sell it with "Adventures In Babysitting" and call it a George Newbern double-feature. ;)
i think the first time i saw this was a late night movie on tv.i've seen it several times,from rental stores.but now it seems harder to find.no one carries many 80's movies in their stores.i love this movie,it's corky,adventure-like,and comedic drama keeps you watching.wondering until the end which woman he wants.

This is a campy, hilarious, light-hearted and completely quotable movie. Having watched it countless times (I've had to replace it twice) it never fails to entertain. The story line is simple, but it certainly has all the makings of a classic comedy/romance - not to mention some pretty dynamic cars. The characters are believeable, and the dialogue isn't too contrived. You really get involved in what's happening throughout the movie. Also, the dream sequence following the Tijuana Torpedo is HILARIOUS.

I read it when I was young, now this is for my 9 year old who is just now getting into science.
This is the first DVD I thought of. I think an excellent choice.
It's nice to find great deals like Carl Sagan's entire series in the boxed set, even though they digitally enhanced a couple of minor things from the original, it's still very much all in order and educationally entertaining!
The technical quality is rather lacking, though it has the Sagan touch which makes this program a rose. We've seen this a dozen times and even my kids like it. Probably in another 20 years this program will still get rated. My kids and i highly recommend this!
What can I say. Carl just has a way still of connecting with people. I admired him as a kid and still do. Loved this DVD production!!!

This is a beautiful DVD set. It is informative and educational for all ages. While time has shown that his predictions were accurate; he still added updates at the end of some of the episodes. I recommend this to anyone interested in learning more about science, astrology or the environment.

I really enjoy this Movie I'm glad i was able to get it. It came in good condition and there were no scratches on the disks.
I didn't receive the item till after the deadline shipment date. i was supposed to receive it by the 18th and didnt get it till later. Boo
I'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE BUT NEVER KNEW PATCH ADAMS WAS A REAL PERSON. ROBIN WILLIAMS PLAYS THIS ROLE BEAUTIFULLY. PERFECTLY PUTTING COMEDY AND DRAMA IN THE RIGHT PLACE
For me, "Patch Adams" is the best film ever to remind us all that laughter is the best medicine. It is fresh as a squirting daisy--not a cliched or sentimental moment in the script. The scene where the little children with cancer all arrive in the courtroom wearing rubber clown noses to support Patch in his hour of need is one of the most unexpected and deeply moving things you will ever see. If you don't cry at that moment, you must not be human.

I think everybody should be more like Patch. At the auto garage where I work I've used some of Patch's techniques to liven up the atmosphere-- putting an oil funnel on top of my head, wearing a fake mustache and funny eyeglasses, cracking lots of jokes. Think about it for a minute--your car breaks down, you have to sit by the roadside all afternoon in the hot sun, the tow truck costs an arm and a leg. Aren't you going to want a little comic relief while I explain how you need to have a new transmission installed? I thought so!

"Patch Adams" is more than a movie--it's a way of life!
I have fallen in love with this movie by Robin Williams. Funny moments and quite touching.He delivers an excellent performance about the life of this individual giving the joy of laughter and medicine. If you enjoy a true to life story (full of noodles and red noses), I highly recommend this!

Staving off suicidal thoughts, Hunter Adams commits himself into a psychiatric ward, where he not only garners the nickname "Patch," but learns the joy in helping others. To this end, he decides to go to medical school, where he clashes with the staid conventions of the establishment as he attempts to inject humor and humanity into his treatment of the patients ("We need to start treating the patient as well as the disease," he declares throughout the film). Robin Williams, in the title role, is as charming as ever, although someone should tell him to broaden his range--the ever-cheerful do-gooderà laGood Will HuntingandDead Poets Societyis getting a little old. His sidekick Truman (Daniel London) steals the show with his gawky allure and eyebrows that threaten to overtake his lean face--he seems more real, which is odd considering that Patch Adams does exist and this film is based on his life. Monica Potter is the coolly reluctant love interest, and she makes the most of her one-dimensional part. While moments of true heartfelt emotion do come through, the major flaw of this film is that the good guys are just so gosh-darn good and the bad ones are just big meanies with no character development.Patch Adams, though, does provide the tears, the giggles, and the kooky folks who will keep you smiling at the end.--Jenny Brown

When it stuck to data it was compelling. It lost credibility with the personal tales of the guy who lost his son and the female soldier. Yes, there is ample opportunity for greed in military contracting. True, not everyone is ethical. Yes, there are probably motivations which we can only speculate on, and it is frustrating that some real issues are not discussed openly.
But for these two people to either profess or feign their ignorance that these are complicated issues, does not interest me. If your are going to ask me to sit for a presentation, please present ideas that are going to teach us something, not that some average joe was duped. I don't want to hear about them. I feel bad for this guy, but tying his pain into this was a bad way to make a rational argument.
I was filled with dread, when we went into Afghanistan. I was heartbroken when we went into Iran. I was also furious when we went into Serbia, to wag the dog for Clinton.
Listing McCain on it was also very cheap. He is so peripheral to the main theme that it is infuriating to see his name listed. He must be very frustrated over this as he makes only the most general statements which have little to do with the beginning of the film and nothing to do with the end.
Why doesn't somebody make a movie about something worth debating, instead of this conspiracy theory nonsense. Example: Should the U.S. maintain a significant presence in foreign lands for the purposes securing strategic resources, in the presence of unstable governments which lack popular support and freedom for their people? There is something to talk about. Maybe its not sexy enough for Mr. Jareki, but at least it is a tangible and open issue, that nobody can deny exists. Start there!
Eugene Jereki's Why We Fight starts with Eisenhower's farewell speech to the nation in 1961 in which he warned Americans to be vigilent concerning the rapid growth of the military-industrial complex. Today he posits that failure to heed the warning has led to the war in Iraq and a return of American imperialism.

While Jereki makes his argument in a cogent manner, my problem with the film is that it does not really say anything new. We have heard these arguments before. Most natably from Michael Moore in recent years. We know that there was double dealing on the part of the military contractors, we know that today's society makes it easier to go to war than it had in the past, we know that Congress has made deals with major corporations for profit what we don't know is how to solve any of these problems. One good thing about the film is that Jereki pushes the idea that a good citizen is an informed citizen and we must all do our parts to stay ever watchful.

I viewed the standard definition disc. The picture and sound quality are quite good as expected for a Sony release. The wealth of special features include extended and deleted scenes, character profiles, an audience Q&A with Jereki, television interviews and an outstanding commentary track featuring Jereki.
Great movie. I recommend this to anyone and everyone who has any interest in the who's and why's of what has been driving U.S. foreign policy since the beginning of WWII and the direction it's heading.
There is a jazz song at minute 8 that I really want the name of. Please someone know!
Truly a "MUST SEE" video! I am shareing this with all of my family and many friends. We had better wake up to what is happening while we let "them" run the country and pay little attention to what is happening to our industrial complex. It may already be too late!

Fans of Oliver Stone'sJ.F.K.will recognize the opening moments of writer-director Eugene Jarecki'sWhy We Fight, in which outgoing President Dwight Eisenhower warns of the pernicious and growing influence of what he called the "military-industrial complex." But Stone's movie, which uses the same footage, was a work of fiction. While those who disagree with the decidedly leftist point of view in this documentary will probably consider it the product of paranoid liberal fantasy as well, there's enough credible material, much of it supplied by the targets of Jarecki's criticisms, to make Eisenhower look like a prophet and everyone else uneasy about the dark confluence of politics, money, and war that controls the country's fortunes. The message here is that while there may be some who sincerely believe that America's various military engagements (in Iraq, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, and elsewhere) since World War II are the product of our God-given duty to spread freedom and halt the influence of evil ideologies around the world, the real reason we fight is that war is good business. This is hardly a bulletin; anyone who is surprised by allegations that politicians pander to defense contractors, or that Vice President Dick Cheney helped secure huge deals for Halliburton, the company he formerly headed, simply hasn't been paying attention (Politicians lie? How shocking!). In fact, the principal drawback to Jarecki's film is simply that there's nothing particularly revelatory or compelling about it. Only when he takes a personal approach does he go beyond the obvious; the story of a retired New York policeman and former Vietnam veteran whose son died in the World Trade Center, who wanted revenge, but who became seriously disillusioned when Bush admitted that the war in Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, adds some much needed human interest. The only thing that might be of interest is how to justify the kindle as a business expense. Otherwise, save your money! No help at all. The other guides are much better. It wasn't worth the $1.49 or whatever I paid for it. I had it for a day and deleted it from my kindle.

(The Punk Rock Bible)

Endlessly entertaining. I simply could not put this book down, and the same will no doubt hold true for any, and every, other reader.
The way this is written you feel like you are personally having a conversation with Iggy Pop, Wayne Kramer, Richard Hell, Patti Smith, David Bowie, and many more. It gives great inside perspective to the NY music scene in the 60's, 70's and 80's and is totally candid-who slept with who, who shot up what, who crossdressed, who pissed the bed... (And there is a great glossary in the back to let you know who everyone is and how they are connected to the scene, so you don't have to be a music buff). The way the interviews are put together, you would think that this is one epic interview- but it is really interviews from many different sources; taken at different times by different people, put together in a way that each artist elaborates and contributes to the story. Really cool book.
I love this book&have read&re-read it many times.

First, this is an oral history&I love good oral history. Studs Terkel has always been a huge hero of mine&Legs McNeil is way on up there with this book.

Next, this is a wonderful collection of words&musing about the American punk scene. I particularly love that it starts with the Velvet Underground and proceeds through MC5&on to Iggy Pop - these are 3 of my favorites - then the New York Dolls&Television&The Ramones.

Having spent a lot of time with this music&its ethos this book flat does it for me.
I just picked up my third copy of this book today. The first I got rid of during a brief 'Jesus freak' phase I went through, the second I lost after moving - hopefully, this one I will be able to keep.

While it is true that this book is limited to proto-punk (Stooges, VU, MC5) and the New York Punk scene (Patti Smith, New York Dolls, Ramones), that's what's so genius about it. A book devoted entirely to encompassing an "oral history of punk" all over the world, from the earliest origins of the "punk spirit," through to the 60s garage bands like The Sonics, the Brit punk scene, the LA Hardcore scene, modern punk, etc. would probably require several volumes.

Instead, Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain stick to a rather limited scope, but one certainly cannot say that this book suffers because of that. True, if you picked up this book to read about the Buzzcocks or the Dead Kennedys or NOFX, you're going to be disappointed. But if it is CBGB/Max's Kansas City you want, this is the book for you.

I love the "oral history" format, and Legs&Gillian do it right, with quotes and excerpts from interviews building a story, from the Velvets to the death of Johnny Thunders - and there is not a wasted quote in the bunch. Stories of drug excess and sexual exploits compete with gossip and bad-mouthing to make a fascinating book, not about the music, but about the people who MADE the music.

I must confess that I have a fascination with mid to late 70s New York decadence, so the tales make me smile, although your reaction may be that of revulsion or horror - but who cares? It's making you react and making you think, and you'll never be able to put on a Ramones or a Heartbreakers album and listen to it in the same way you did before you read this. Highly recommended.

The only complaint I have is that Legs has said he's only used 10% of the interviews he conducted in this book. I'd love to see a sequel!
This book is a fascinating read from start to finish! Love the way the book is written in people's narrative so you get a different perspective of the same occurance. Great historical references and really funny anecdotes. Love Legs McNeil! Great book!! Would definately read again.

I love the bobble obama. But I question its authenticity. I feel like they took a generic "black man in suit" and put a obama package around it. Sigh.

(A great game to understand true politics)

This was a "gag" holiday present. It's a great game for those over 13+ age to understand real politics and the game. Leverages an existing game, Stratego, for the rules. It was entertaining and is limited in that it is a two player game but it would be fun to play in teams if there are more than 2 players.
The Democrats vs. Republicans Edition of the classic STRATEGO Game is a must have collectible for the politically savvy. This special edition of the classic battlefield strategy of game pits the two rival parties in their ultimate quest for the White House.
