(Historic recordings, one star off for some of the audio quality)
The final seven tracks on this CD sound far superior to the first seven, which is the reason I've knocked down the rating one star. But with recordings of this age, it's to be expected.

Tracks 1-5 were recorded by Jesse 'Tiny' Kennedy at the Memphis Recording Service in September 1952. Along with Tiny Kennedy on vocals, these Kennedy-penned tracks featured Alfordson Nelson on piano; Wilburn Steinberg on bass; Houston Stokes on drums; Calvin Newborn on guitar; Richard Sanders, Bill Fort, and Robert Hamp on saxes; and final credit goes to Elmer, The Disc Jockey Rooster, whose crowing opens track 3. These tracks are:

1. Strange Kind of Feelin'
2. Have You Heart About the Farmer's Daughter?
3. Early in the Mornin', Baby
4. Don't Lay This Job on Me
5. Blues Disease

Tracks 6 and 7 were recorded by Clayton Love&His Shufflers by Scott's Radio Service in Jackson, Mississippi, June 1951. These Love compositions are Shufflin' With Love and Susie. Along with Clayton Love on piano and vocals, they feature Henry Reed on bass, George Hicks on drums, Jesse Flowers on alto sax, Eddue Lucas on trombone, James ford, on trumpet, and an unknown tenor sax player.

Tracks 8 through 14 are all Jerry "Boogie" McCain compositions. The first two were recorded at the State Furniture Co. in Jackson, Mississippi in October 1953. These two tracks feature McCain on vocals, harmonica, and tambourine; David Campbell on piano; Herman Fowlkes on bass; Walter McCain on drums; Christopher Collins on guitar; and Bernard Williams on tenor sax. Tracks 10 through 14 were recorded at the Diamond Recording Studios in Jackson in November 1954. They feature Jerry McCain on vocals and harmonica; David Campbell on piano; Raz Roseby on bass; Junior Blackman on drums; and J.V. Turner and Christopher Collins on guitar. The McCain tracks are:

8. East of the Sun
9. Wine-o-Wine
10. Stay Out of Automobiles
11. Middle of the Night
12. Crazy 'Bout That Mess
13. Fall Guy
14. Love to Make Up

Extensive liner notes by Marc Ryan.

(The Patch Review)

(Waited and waited)

(A DRAMIC COMEDY)

(Patch Adams is my daily inspiration!)

(A prescription for a good movie...Patch Adams!)
I really enjoy this Movie I'm glad i was able to get it. It came in good condition and there were no scratches on the disks.
I didn't receive the item till after the deadline shipment date. i was supposed to receive it by the 18th and didnt get it till later. Boo
I'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE BUT NEVER KNEW PATCH ADAMS WAS A REAL PERSON. ROBIN WILLIAMS PLAYS THIS ROLE BEAUTIFULLY. PERFECTLY PUTTING COMEDY AND DRAMA IN THE RIGHT PLACE
For me, "Patch Adams" is the best film ever to remind us all that laughter is the best medicine. It is fresh as a squirting daisy--not a cliched or sentimental moment in the script. The scene where the little children with cancer all arrive in the courtroom wearing rubber clown noses to support Patch in his hour of need is one of the most unexpected and deeply moving things you will ever see. If you don't cry at that moment, you must not be human.

I think everybody should be more like Patch. At the auto garage where I work I've used some of Patch's techniques to liven up the atmosphere-- putting an oil funnel on top of my head, wearing a fake mustache and funny eyeglasses, cracking lots of jokes. Think about it for a minute--your car breaks down, you have to sit by the roadside all afternoon in the hot sun, the tow truck costs an arm and a leg. Aren't you going to want a little comic relief while I explain how you need to have a new transmission installed? I thought so!

"Patch Adams" is more than a movie--it's a way of life!

I have fallen in love with this movie by Robin Williams. Funny moments and quite touching. He delivers an excellent performance about the life of this individual giving the joy of laughter and medicine. If you enjoy a true to life story (full of noodles and red noses), I highly recommend this!
Patch Adamsraises two schools of thought: There are those who are inspired by the true story of a troubled man who finds happiness in helping others--a man set on changing the world and who may well accomplish the task. And then there are those who feel manipulated by this feel-good story, who want to smack the young medical student every time he begins his silly antics.

Staving off suicidal thoughts, Hunter Adams commits himself into a psychiatric ward, where he not only garners the nickname "Patch," but learns the joy in helping others. To this end, he decides to go to medical school, where he clashes with the staid conventions of the establishment as he attempts to inject humor and humanity into his treatment of the patients ("We need to start treating the patient as well as the disease," he declares throughout the film). Robin Williams, in the title role, is as charming as ever, although someone should tell him to broaden his range--the ever-cheerful do-gooderà laGood Will HuntingandDead Poets Societyis getting a little old. His sidekick Truman (Daniel London) steals the show with his gawky allure and eyebrows that threaten to overtake his lean face--he seems more real, which is odd considering that Patch Adams does exist and this film is based on his life. Monica Potter is the coolly reluctant love interest, and she makes the most of her one-dimensional part. While moments of true heartfelt emotion do come through, the major flaw of this film is that the good guys are just so gosh-darn good and the bad ones are just big meanies with no character development.Patch Adams, though, does provide the tears, the giggles, and the kooky folks who will keep you smiling at the end.--Jenny Brown

(Kinda Straw Man)
When a title of a political documentary can piggyback off of the failure of man meat, you know the makers want to sound jaded. This work wants to draw in people who don't vote or don't consider voting a priority. Actually, you can tell the makers of the work really want everyday people to be politicized, the more you dive into the work.

This work is great for political science lovers. Further, I think journalism or communications majors would find it beneficial too. You could show it in a high school government class, but probably only at the Advance Placement level.

So the work says politicians are pre-packaged: they are not just great men or women, they have countless consultants, numbers-crunchers, and donators behind them. Okay, but what isn't pre-packaged? Companies use advertising and market research. Movies have advanced screenings so they can tinker with things. Books and articles get heavily edited before they are published. When did shining one's shoes become a facade?

Further, the work introduces a topic in a negative tone and then it justifies it. For example, the work first says, "Everyone hates spin!" Then they show several interviewees speaking about the importance of spin and why it's here to stay. The work bemoans political ads, but then admits that it's the best way to reach the masses, especially for busy people who don't prioritize elections. The work pretends to give the impression that everything in elections is crazy and then a second later it shows why several phenomena are justified.

The work has a diverse array of interviewees. I liked how it gave the interviewee's name and title each time they spoke. This is so unlike documentaries where the interviewee is named once and the documentary makers expect the viewer to remember it for the rest of the work. I thought the work had far more Democrats or progressives in it. However, many of those left-wing interviewees would freely admit the ways the Republicans succeed in certain areas and their camp does not. The work can be read as even-handed.

The documentary's primary example campaign is the 2006 race between Santorum and Casey. This was not a race in a swing state where the outcome was not foreseen. Many said Santorum was too conservative to represent an East Coast state and his downfall was predicted. I think the documentary makers may have been based in Pennsylvania and thus it was less costly to focus on a local race. Still, it didn't seem truly purple and the work will make Democrats like myself feel good because our side won. (That is not giving away a plot because that's a historical fact. You know what was going to happen in DiCaprio's "Titanic" too.)

When you travel deeper into this documentary, it really shows how it wants everyday Americans to be more politically engaged. It bemoans that television stations don't pay more attention to campaigns. It laments how voters only depend on ads and don't do their own extensive research. Luckily, it does show one interviewee saying, "Ratings for the news go down when you discuss politics and it goes up when you cover the weather." So in a capitalist-loving country, should one be surprised that shows focus more on the bottom line economically than they do civics? Part clever, part deceitful, this work really wants to have it both ways.

(A Blast to the Past)

(Remember the Edsel!)

(Another Gorman triumph!)
It's a day Sam McCain and other car enthusiasts have been looking forward to for a while. The Ford Motor Company is releasing their new design, the Edsel, in dealerships all over the country. But it turns out the design is less than appealing.

The real shock in this small Iowa town, however, is the body that is found in the trunk of one of the models. Susan Squires was the second wife of David Squires, another ambitious attorney in town. A part time PI, Sam is asked to look into the murder and beat the crooked chief of police. Does he have what it takes to find the killer?

I may not have lived during the 50's, but this book was a fun nostalgic journey to the not so distant past. References to pop culture long gone made me smile. Sam is a smart, likable lead, with the exception of his love life. I had a hard time keeping all the characters straight at first, but once I did, they began to stand out to me as well. The mystery was good with a few nice twists along the way. I never would have figured out the villain without Sam's help.

Those who enjoy history or live through the decade will enjoy this trip back in time.

This is a fun book, with a novel story line, great humor and a credible small-town mess of characters. The fun is in the reading, not in detecting. The author is not absolutely surefooted about his time period of 1957, but who cares? Good reading with a gin and tonic in hand.
This prequel to The Day the Music Died isn't quite as good as the first book, but it's still very, very good. As usual, Gorman creates a fantastic, vivid cast of characters, each with their own particular quirks that place them just left of center, and sets them all down in a compelling murder mystery. The period detail seems to capture the 50s without being heavy-handed. Let's hope there are many more Sam McCain novels to come in the future.
In 1958, with hoopla and picnics and fireworks, Ford introduced the Edsel to America. In Black River Falls, Iowa, the dead body of the nineteen-year-old Suzie Jo O'Herlihy in the trunk of a brand-new Edsel upstages the ill-fated car. Sam McCain makes some troubling discoveries about his hometown's upstanding citizens as he tracks down Suzie's elusive murderer.

(Very highly recommended)

(enjoyable Yuletide tale of different types of love)
During her six months of marriage to Jake, Elise failed to consider the effect of having her deceased husband's picture by the bedside, or the effect of her emphasis on procreation at the expense of all of else. But when Jake suddenly discovers that he is the father of a special needs child, the very foundations of their marriage prove to be made of sand. She is not ready to be the mother of someone else's child. He is not prepared to give up his son.

Only the fact that Jake cannot gain custody of his child without being married forces both he and Elise to confront their deepest feelings. Truthfully, somewhere along the way a marriage formed for the purpose of having a child had brought unexpected love. But due to the new stresses of their lives, now it has brought unexpected heart ache. But mutual love and love for a special child might just be enough to bring this unexpected family together by Christmas.

Linda Warren pens a heartwarming tale of second chances in A BABY BY CHRISTMAS. She deftly exploits one of the best benefits of writing for the Superromance line by bringing together mature characters under unusual circumstances. Certainly they discover new love, but not through the traditional plot devices. Instead, she creates a masterfully fresh plot and wonderful, yet wounded, characters that discover marvelous possibilities. With such a wonderful storyline, readers will easily forgive a child that is rather too precocious for his circumstances. A wonderful read that belongs the keeper shelf, A BABY BY CHRISTMAS comes very highly recommended.
In Texas in her mid thirties with her biological clock ticking, Elise wanted a baby for a long time, but her beloved husband died ten years ago. The English Lit professor knows that was the prime reason she remarried six months ago. However, she has had no success with becoming pregnant though she and her second spouse Jake have tried. Jake feels Elise's pain and disappointment over their constant failure for he would do anything he could for his beloved, but is weary of her belief that he is a perpetual machine to feed her his sperm.

However, Jake is stunned to learn that before he met his cherished spouse, he sired a baby Ben, whose biological mother abandoned the three year old. Jake wants to raise his son, who has special needs that require extra parental involvement. Clock or not, Jake prays that Elise will help him raise this little boy in love whether she becomes pregnant or not, but so far she rejects the lad.

Though the child is too precociously wise for his age and lot in life, readers will enjoy this Yuletide tale of varying love. The story line contains the obvious adult love theme, but also includes a delightful relationship drama when Jake wants Ben with him, but Elise cannot cope with this image of her failures. Linda Warren provides a strong look at what is important in life in time for the holiday season.
